“Reality Touring” with Nation Travels

Honolulu or Havana? The world is full of travel opportunities that are more than enjoyable — they can be transformational. By getting out of our comfort zone, we realize that different people find different truths to be self-evident and God-given. We gain an understanding of the other 96 percent of humanity — and in many ways, we can learn a lot about our own country by viewing it from afar.

My tour company has been taking Americans on the road for more than 40 years now. From Lisbon to Istanbul, and from St. Petersburg to Palermo, we offer tours across Europe. I love each of our itineraries, and I frequently travel along with our tour groups — but I also regularly travel beyond Europe. And when I do, I like to enlist the help of what I call “reality tour” companies — organizations that offer educational trips for thoughtful travelers. Recently, I found out about another great option for Americans who want to get an education on the road: Nation Travels . “To Reconstruct The Nation”: Special issue of The Atlantic examines America’s most radical experiment and its aftermath

Issue premieres sweeping full-length play by Anna Deavere Smith, This Ghost of Slavery

The Atlantic is releasing in full “ To Reconstruct The Nation ,” a special issue that, as editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg writes today , is “meant to examine the enduring consequences of Reconstruction’s tragic fall at a moment—­yet another moment—when the cause of racial progress faces sustained pressure.” The centerpiece of the issue, which is led by senior editor Vann R. Newkirk II , is a new feature-length play by the actor, playwright, and Atlantic contributing writer Anna Deavere Smith , which appears along with essays by writers, historians, and scholars including Secretary of the Smithsonian Lonnie G. Bunch III, Jordan Virtue, Peniel E. Joseph, Drew Gilpin Faust, Eric Foner, and The Atlantic ’s Vann R. Newkirk II, Adam Harris, and Yoni Appelbaum . The issue arrives 157 years after The Atlantic published Frederick Douglass’s famed essay on “ Reconstruction ,” and explores the fleeting time after the Civil War when the country undertook a radical transformation in an effort to become a true democracy. But the backlash against Reconstruction, and its effective end in 1877, prevented its proponents from achieving their aspirations. This issue addresses how the intense battles currently being waged in our politics and culture—over voting rights, access to education, criminal justice, and what it means to have equal protection under the law—can all trace their roots to the unfinished business of Reconstruction. Anna Deavere Smith’s play, This Ghost of Slavery , runs across 32 pages and is the first play The Atlantic has published in nearly a century. Set in Baltimore and Annapolis in the 1850s-60s and the present, the play explores the power of historical trauma to persist for generations. It interrogates the contemporary failures of our juvenile justice system, (“How did we get here?” one character repeatedly asks), finding the origins of the problem in the aftermath of emancipation, when former slaveowners in Maryland used the state’s “Black Code” to immediately re-indenture children under the guise of “apprenticeship.” This functionally extended slavery for adolescents. As with much of Deavere Smith’s work, the play draws from her own contemporary interviews with activists, social-justice workers, and young people whose lives have been affected by the carceral system. For This Ghost of Slavery , she supplemented these interviews with primary-source historical materials, mining 19th-century archives, transcripts, and diaries, and has woven dialogue from these historical sources into the play, which features historical figures such as President Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, General Lew Wallace, and Elizabeth Turner, whose court case brought by her mother against her enslaver turned out to be a hinge on which history turned. The result is a searing drama of great emotional and historical complexity set in two time periods. The play brings history vividly (and at times painfully) to life, makes plain the injustices meted out to Black Americans across centuries, and allows readers to see anew the connections between past and present. “To Reconstruct the Nation” includes the following pieces, all online today:

Lonnie G. Bunch III : “ The Archive of Emancipation ” In the papers of the Freedmen’s Bureau, Lonnie G. Bunch III, the secretary of the Smithsonian, found the hopes and disappointments of a people on the cusp of freedom—including his own family’s. Bunch explores a public transcription and digitization project that is making much of the Freedmen’s Bureau documents available widely for the first time, and what it tells us about the lives of enslaved people, especially after freedom. Vann R. Newkirk II : “ The Years of Jubilee ” In 1871, the choir of the struggling Fisk University engaged in a gambit to save the school: It decided to go on a singing tour of America. Senior editor Vann R. Newkirk II writes about how the choir achieved more than its members could have imagined. David W. Blight : “ The Annotated Frederick Douglass ” In 1866, at the dawn of Reconstruction, Frederick Douglass published an essay in The Atlantic wrestling with the promise of the moment and the shortcomings he could already anticipate. Reprinted in full for the December issue, the essay is newly annotated by Douglass’s biographer David W. Blight. Jordan Virtue : “ Kennedy and the Lost Cause ” In his 1956 book, Profiles in Courage , future president John F. Kennedy promoted the southern mythology of Reconstruction, praising a racist, slave-holding senator while tarnishing the reputation and legacy of his political rival, Adelbart Ames, an ardent supporter of Black suffrage and Mississippi’s governor during Reconstruction. Virtue writes about the efforts of Ames’s daughter throughout her life to correct the historical record and clear her father’s name. Profiles in Courage remains, as of now, uncorrected. Adam Harris : “ The Black Roots of American Education ” Staff writer Adam Harris writes about how freedpeople and their advocates persuaded the nation to embrace public schooling for all. Yoni Applebaum : “ The Atlantic and Reconstruction ” Deputy editor Yoni Applebaum writes about what The Atlantic got wrong in 1901, when the magazine last reckoned with Reconstruction in a sustained way. Drew Gilpin Faust : “ The Men Who Started the War ” John Brown and the Secret Six—the abolitionists who funded the raid on Harpers Ferry—confronted a question as old as America: When is violence justified? Peniel E. Joseph : “ The Revolution Never Ended ” The federal government abandoned Reconstruction in 1877, but, Peniel Joseph writes, Black people didn’t give up on the moment’s promise. Eric Foner : “ A Traitor to the Traitors ” The Reconstruction scholar Eric Foner writes about how—and why—the Confederate general James Longstreet became a champion of Reconstruction. Why The Nation and Other Magazines Look to Luxury Travel to Pay the Bills

Each of these media brands is different, but they have the same thing in common: well-heeled readers who will pay a premium to travel together.

Affinity travel is an under-recognized part of the luxury travel spectrum. Alumni associations, non-profit organizations and cultural institutions often sell travel as a way to cultivate donors and to raise money. Recently, affinity travel has been bleeding into the journalism arena, which itself has been bleeding cash for years.

Janet Moore, owner of affinity tour operator Distant Horizons , says it’s a logical business for certain publications to consider. “The tours add a much-needed revenue stream for special interest magazines that already have a ready-made audience–subscribers–for their programs,” says Moore.  Additionally, reporters on staff can lend expertise, either on tour or pre-tour. Planners can work with reporters to open doors, given their strong connections in a country’s political, cultural and academic landscapes.

Teresa Stack is the former president of The Nation  and founder of the publication’s educational travel programs. “Publishing is struggling in general,” says Stack. “Frankly, we largely developed the tour program to support the journalism. It’s not our number one source of revenue, but it’s a growing source.”

The Nation is the country’s oldest weekly magazine, debuting the year Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. The left-leaning political and cultural magazine is certainly not the first media outlet to introduce tours in order to subsidize journalism. Several travel-related magazines, like National Geographic and AFAR,  run tour programs. In 2014, the New York Times initiated its Times Journeys program . And later this month, the Los Angeles Times will unveil the details of its new Expeditions catalog.

The Nation’s first trips  were seminars at sea, a concept borrowed from The National Review , its political arch rival. While The Nation’s cruise program has sailed along for 20 years, land-based programming was added only in 2014. Cuba was the first stop on The Nation’s itinerary, and the island continues to be a top seller three years later.

Unlike so many group tours, The Nation hones in on issues of interest to its readers. Visits to Cuba have included tours of healthcare facilities and meetings with women’s associations. A group that is currently in Russia with The Nation is meeting the head of the Mikhail Gorbachev Foundation. A trip later this year to Vietnam will include a visit to the DMZ, and seminars on everything from Agent Orange to the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Among the other countries on the 2017 roster are Iran and Colombia. According to Stack, “We want to go to places that are unusual, perhaps where the government is at odds with ours. We think there’s something to be gained by having an open, dialogue.”

And the more politically-charged (to a degree), the better. While your average traveler might shun a controversial destination, The Nation’s readers tend to lean into these places. “Our travelers are open-minded, curious and intrepid,” notes Stack. “They want to learn about geopolitical power and politically-charged issues.” According to Debra Eliezer, The Nation’s travel program manager,“Our travelers think it’s important to go places, meet people, see a different side of the story and draw their own conclusions.“

Eliezer adds that there’s another big advantage to this type of affinity travel. “Our travelers bond over politics, and they can sit at dinner knowing they are in a safe environment. That’s a powerful thing, especially now with what’s going on in the United States.” As longtime reader Mary McEvers puts it, “I’ve told my friends it was like I spent a week in a support group for anxiety-filled progressives.”

What to Know Before Booking a National Park Trip This Summer

Additional routes in popular parks now require reservations, the annual pass gets a big change, Juneteenth is now a new free entrance day and more changes for 2024.

In 2023, the seashores, lakeshores, battlefields, historic sites, monuments and more that make up the National Park Service had 325.5 million visits , an increase of 4 percent from the year before.

The National Park Service director, Charles F. Sams III, praised the surge of interest in “learning our shared American story throughout the hidden gems of the National Parks System.”

Expecting an even greater turnout in 2024, the Park Service and Recreation.gov , the booking platform for federal land reservations, have implemented new measures to streamline the park experience, manage overcrowding and safeguard the environment.

More parks are requiring reservations

To better avoid congested trails, packed parking lots and overflowing trash cans, additional parks are joining Rocky Mountain , Arches and Glacier National Parks this year in requiring day-use permits, timed entries and other reservations for travelers who wish to visit, particularly during peak hours, holidays and the parks’ high seasons. Yosemite National Park is reinstating a timed-entry system it instituted in 2020, but paused in 2022.

Many park enthusiasts expressed mixed feelings about the reservation policies, with some lamenting a lack of first-come, first-served campsites while others find comfort in knowing they have a confirmed booking. As nearly 75 percent of visitors each year descend on national parks from May to October (and often on weekends), park officials stand by the system.

“In some parks, the level of demand is exceeding the capacity for which infrastructure was designed or is outpacing the National Park Service’s ability to sustainably support visitation,” said Kathy Kupper, a public affairs specialist for the service. “This trend is resulting in the need to explore new strategies to protect natural and cultural resources and provide opportunities for safe and meaningful visitor experiences.”

It can be confusing.

New to implementing timed-entry reservations for vehicles is Mount Rainier National Park , in Washington, for its popular Paradise and Sunrise Corridors during certain times in the summer season. Reservations cost $2, are valid for one day and must be purchased along with the park ticket, but do not apply for visitors with wilderness permits or camping or lodge reservations. Similar vehicle reservations are now required for certain periods for viewing the sunrise at Haleakalā National Park in Maui, Hawaii , and driving the Cadillac Summit Road in Maine’s Acadia National Park .

Visitors wishing to hike Old Rag Mountain in Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park must obtain a day-use ticket between March 1 and Nov. 30, and in Zion National Park, in Utah, hikers wishing to visit Angels Landing , the dramatic 1,488-foot-tall rock formation, also need to purchase a permit. Fees range from $1 to $6, in addition to the parks’ entrance fees.

As each destination is managed differently, check the park’s webpage for the type of reservation required. Although most bookings can be made through Recreation.gov, some sites, such as Muir Woods National Monument, use a different system.

New features on Recreation.gov

In 2023, Recreation.gov reported that more than 4 million camping reservations and 2 million timed-entry reservations were booked online, and 1.5 million permits were issued. Some 2.9 million new users signed up for the site. With its expanding user base, the booking platform has added 58 reservable national park locations — including 17 campgrounds — such as Central Avenue Walk-in Sites at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Bluff Hike In Camping in South Carolina’s Congaree National Park.

Recreation.gov has also improved an alerts feature, piloted in July 2023, that can notify users through email or mobile push notifications when a sold-out campsite becomes available. After Recreation.gov notifies you of availability, you must book the campsite yourself online — and quickly, as you’ll be shown how many other people (possibly hundreds) have received the same alert.

While its customer support center and mobile app are still only available in English, Recreation.gov recently introduced a Spanish language translation option. The Park Service partners with Latino Conservation Week , which hosts nationwide hikes and events on environmental education and in-park stewardship, and will celebrate its 10th year in September.

A limit to the annual America the Beautiful pass

The 2024 America the Beautiful pass no longer allows two owners. The annual interagency pass, which costs $80 and covers the entrance fees for more than 2,000 federal recreation sites (of which roughly 100 do not charge for admission year-round), is now marked by a single signature line on the back of the card. The pass owner must show I.D. and be present with any accompanying travelers wishing to access the park with the pass. (Annual passes issued in 2023 will still be valid until their expiration date.) The pass covers all passengers in a vehicle — up to four adults, and children under 16 are admitted free — or up to four cyclists riding together. Active military or veterans and people with permanent disabilities are eligible for a free lifetime pass; 4th grade students may receive a free annual pass; and senior citizens may purchase a $20 annual pass or pay $80 for a lifetime pass.

At the parks, more accessible features, E.V. chargers and new lodging

To better protect against global warming, the Park Service is putting more than $65 million from the Inflation Reduction Act and Great American Outdoors Act into climate mitigation and ecosystem restoration.

Using $15.9 million budgeted for zero-emission vehicle deployment, charging capacity and infrastructure, the Park Service is prioritizing a reduction in carbon emissions, said Mr. Sams, by installing new electric-vehicle charging stations and running electric buses.

An interactive online locator tool created in 2023 shows E.V. charging stations throughout 27 national parks and the type of chargers available. In addition to the tool, every national park page displays alerts on road closures, parking lot capacities, construction work and other incidents.

Mr. Sams also said the Park Service is investing $1.3 billion from the Great American Outdoors Act to improve accessibility features, ranging from a new A.D.A.-compliant visitor center at Morristown National Historic Park in New Jersey to new beach wheelchairs at Sleeping Bear Dunes , Channel Islands and Virgin Islands National Parks . Each destination’s website has an accessibility tab to help visitors plan their trip, and Recreation.gov now has a search filter on its homepage to make it easier to locate accessible accommodations.

New lodging options now available across the country include the Flamingo Lodge , which opened inside Everglades National Park last fall with 24 guest rooms built from repurposed shipping containers. In March, along the southeastern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Cataloochee Ranch reopened with 11 renovated cabins and a new restaurant. This spring, the Clubhouse Hotel & Suites will welcome its first guests in Rapid City, S.D., the closest major town to Badlands National Park , and opening in May in Idaho is the Yellowstone Peaks Hotel , a 30-minute-drive from Yellowstone National Park. This fall, California-bound travelers planning a visit to General Sherman, the largest known tree on Earth, might book at AutoCamp Sequoia , just outside Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park .

Also in California: Those who don’t score a highly coveted (and contentious) spot at the newly reopened High Sierra Camps in Yosemite could book Wildhaven Yosemite in Mariposa, which offers more affordable rates, hiking trails and views of the Sierra Nevadas. Reservations for its first season are available beginning May 1.

Celebrating milestones and a new free entrance day

On the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, visitors can pay tribute to African American heritage at over 100 parks , including the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C., Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument , and the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail . This year also marks 100 years since Indigenous people were recognized as United States citizens. Although many parks have Indigenous programming , Mr. Sams, who is the first Native American to serve as N.P.S. director , suggested visiting Hopewell Cultural Historical Park in Ohio and Whitman Mission Historic National Historic Site in Washington, where he recently brought his daughter.

“In order to celebrate the diversity that makes our country great, we must share the complete story of America, which includes both the successes and challenges encountered on the way to form a more perfect union,” Mr. Sams said.

Juneteenth National Independence Day is the National Park Service’s newest free entrance day . Visitors can also take advantage of free admission on April 20, the first day of National Park Week; Aug. 4, the four-year anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act ; Sept. 28 on National Public Lands Day ; and Nov. 11 for Veterans Day .

Mandisa remembered. Fans, music industry, friends pay tribute to 47-year-old singer

Grammy-award winning musician and "American Idol" alum Mandisa was found dead at her Nashville home on Thursday.

The 47-year-old Christian singer dazzled audiences when she hit the stage of "American Idol" in 2005 and made it through to the final nine. From there she released her debut album, but dealt with pain from the loss of a beloved friend and having a personal crisis of faith. Her journey through heartache and depression to finding her faith again inspired many that were going through similar situations.

"Mandisa was a voice of encouragement and truth to people facing life’s challenges all around the world," was written on an Instagram post announcing Mandisa's death.

Since the news of her death, family, fans and friends in and out of the music industry, have paid tribute to the singer.

What happened to Mandisa?

On Friday, The Media Collective, Mandisa's rep, issued this statement confirming her death, but did not disclose how the songstress died.

"We can confirm that yesterday Mandisa was found in her home deceased. At this time we do not know the cause of death or any further details. We ask for your prayers for her family and close-knit circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time."

Mandisa's story and journey to 'Overcome' touched many

Mandisa crisis of faith was an inspiration not only for an album, but inspired others who were going though hardship. Fans shared their stories on the Instagram post announcing her death.

"I’m devastated 💔💔💔 Overcomer help me healed when I loss my daughter at 16. She gave hope even when she didn’t have any to give herself. Mandisa is truly one of God’s Devine. I hope she finally has the peace she struggled so long to find. We have truly really loss one of God’s truest and purest creatures… I love you now and forever on Mandisa. God speed on your journey to heaven….," wrote user keishacraftsmith.

Other's shared how her music and writing helped them through some of the toughest times in their lives. Actress Candace Cameron Bure shared broken heart emojis under the post, while Christian rap artist Wande offered condolences.

Fellow Christian musician and friend Colton Dixon, shared memories of being on the road with Mendisa and Toby Mac.

"Mandisa is the sweetest, kindest soul that  @anniedixon__  and I have met on the road. After hearing she went to be with the Jesus last night I was reflecting this morning on the times we had together," Dixon wrote.

Singer and songwriter Matthew West paid tribute to his longtime friend and collaborator with lyrics from their song "Only the World", stating that they "hit differently" now that Mandisa was gone.

"I am so incredibly saddened to hear about the loss of my friend Mandisa. I will always cherish the memories of times we spent together hosting award shows, going on tour, and most of all helping her tell her story in the songwriting room," West also wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts also paid tribute to the late singer.

"My heart is heavy hearing about Mandisa. Incredibly blessed that she was there my first day back on ⁦ @GMA ⁩ following my long medical leave. Her beautiful music & spirit lifted me and countless others," Roberts wrote on X.

Fellow musician Don Moen provided a statement to The Tennessean, saying Mandisa was not only a powerhouse of a talent, but that she also possessed a genuinely kind spirit.

"We ministered together several times, she sang background vocals on my album 'Thank You Lord' and joined me on several tours," the statement read. "On one particular tour, notes kept appearing in everyone's bunk on the bus or in their instrument cases. These were encouraging messages like: 'You are blessed and highly favored,' or 'You're such a blessing on this tour.' Only at the end of the tour did we discover it had been Mandisa. Whether behind the scenes or center stage, her presence always brought joy and hope.

Where was Mandisa from?

Mandisa was born in California, but her home was in Tennessee.

She graduated Fisk University in Nashville in 2000 and was a member of the famed Fisk University Jubilee singers. She called Tennessee home after her graduation, through her "American Idol" tenure, a Grammy win, multiple albums and until her death on Thursday.
