Khao Yai national park is without a doubt the best park in Thailand for wildlife watching. Our tours in kui buri national park.

Kui Buri national park is THE best park in Thailand to see wild elephants. Our tours in Kui Buri have a very high success rate with elephant sightings, and with luck you might see some other wildlife like e.g., Gaur, Oriental Pied Hornbills, and more.

Our tours in kaeng krachan national park.

Kaeng Krachan national park is the largest national park in Thailand. Finding the wildlife can at times be a bit more of a challenge compared to e.g., Khao Yai national park. But for those who appreciate the smaller, feathered and scaly creatures just as much as the large animals, the tours in Kaeng Krachan will not disappoint. The park certainly has a wilder feel to it.

Our tours in huai kha khaeng wildlife sanctuary.

Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife sanctuary makes for a great addition to the other parks we offer. Especially, for those who wish to see more of Thailand's wildlife. On the tours in Huai Kha Khaeng we spend a lot of time in wildlife observation towers, but we will also search for wildlife by car and a bit on foot.

The park is famous for protecting the largest wild tiger population in Thailand, though sightings of the big cats are next to impossible.

However, there are some amazing other creatures like e.g., the endangered Banteng, and the stunning Green Peafowl that are fairly commonly seen here and make it worth to visit this wildlife sanctuary.

The forest in the accessible part of the park is very different from the other parks. More open and dry deciduous forest. Probably not the image people have about the Thai jungles.

But that's exactly why this place is perfect to be combined with the other parks for a longer wildlife holiday. That way you will see more of the diversity of both wildlife and landscapes of Thailand.

Thailand has a lot to offer when it comes to nature. And to get the most out of it, visiting various regions throughout the country will significantly increase the chance to see a wide variety of wildlife. This page lists our tours around the country on which we visit multiple destinations. Generally, the trips listed here have a specific focus on a certain group of animals. For example, tours focused specifically on reptiles & amphibians.

We have not listed all possible tours around the country that we are able to arrange. We can organize tailor-made trips around Thailand with focus on all kinds of specific target species. If you do not see what you are after, feel free to contact us to find out what we can arrange for you.

Kui Buri national park is the only park in Thailand where you are virtually guaranteed to see wild elephants. But there is more. The park is home to a large Gaur population, and with luck these might be seen on our wildlife safari. By joining our tours in Kui Buri, you are directly contributing to the conservation of the park and the elephants. Local farmers are hired to drive and assist us through the park, which offers them an income from elephant watching which compensates the almost daily losses of their crops eaten by these same wild giants. Therefore, your visit helps protect the wild elephants! Click here to find our tours in Kui Buri national park

Thailand has a great biodiversity. And even though it is not so well known for it, Thailand is actually a great country for wildlife watchers. It might not be as easy as the savannahs in Africa, you actually have to put some effort in it, but in our opinion that makes Thailand more rewarding. And in the right national parks you have a good chance to see a fair bit of animals.

These wildlife watching tour packages have a more general focus on wildlife. We basically look at everything that moves, from mammals to insects, reptiles to birds, everything!

Our herping tours in thailand.

Thailand has a great diversity of herpetofauna. Over 230 species of snakes, almost 200 species of amphibians, and more. Some of the most charismatic snake species in the world like the King Cobra ( Ophiophagus hannah ) and the Reticulated Python ( Malayopython reticulatus ) occur in Thailand. Herping in Thailand can be challenging, but very rewarding.

Some packages are solely focused on the nighttime, others include both daytime and nighttime herping. We primarily go out on foot to search for reptiles and amphibians, but sometimes we might search by car too.

We have experience in every corner of the country and can organize tailor-made herping trips well beyond the tour options we mention on this page. Tours of one or more weeks also belong to the possibilities.

We need to add that our guides will help you finding the subjects, but are not photography experts that can give you photo technical advice. All our private tours are flexible enough to give you all the time to get that perfect shot!

Our tours in thailand suitable for kids.

Introducing your children to the wild, especially the biodiverse jungles like in Thailand, is extremely valuable. The excitement of walking in the dense jungle amongst huge fairytale-like, strangler fig trees, hearing all the jungle sounds, seeing gibbons swinging around like acrobats, massive colourful hornbills flying over your head sounding like a steam engine, and stepping their feet in the huge footprints of an elephant, or standing next to a big pile of elephant dung, is something that all kids should experience at least once in their life. They will have good memories about that for many years after.

All the tours listed on this page are suitable for families with children. These are generally private tours, so it will be just your family, which allows our guides to adapt the itinerary fully to the abilities of the kids. To be honest, anyway most tours are typically not physically challenging in a way that the average child would not be able to follow along. Not rarely we see the parents struggling more than their kids, haha. But of course if they are very young, cutting a hike a bit shorter might be a wise option, unless you have a backpack to carry your kids. Also, starting the day a bit later, or finishing a bit earlier is no problem if you think the days are too long.

We would specifically recommend Khao Yai national park for families with children, due to the wide variety of tour activities ranging from the usual jungle hikes and game drives, to options like night safari drives, bat caves, and waterfalls. Not all parks have such a wide range of options. Besides that, Khao Yai national park has from our extensive experience always been the most consistent in wildlife sightings.

We have had kids on our tours of all ages. Sometimes even babies of just a couple months old. It is all possible.

Another of Thailand’s most famous herping and general wildlife guiding outfits, if you go out with these guys, you are not only going to add some serious herps to your list, but and birds mammals as well.

A lot of their tours are to the world-famous Kaeng Krachan National Park, which is around 75km from the city of Hua Hin. This is one of the best places in Thailand for both mammal-watching and herping. They also hit Kaho Yai, Kui Buri, Huai Kha Khaeng, Bangkok, Phuket and are able to customize tour locations around Thailand based on guest requirements.

Thai National Parks

Kaeng krachan national park, private tour | 1-day wildlife tour in kaeng krachan.

A 1-day wildlife tour in Kaeng Krachan National Park is a great way to explore the park and will also give the possibility to see some of the common species in the park. Kaeng Krachan is the largest and one of the best national parks in Thailand, listed as a World Heritage Site. It's home to a wide range of animals including gibbons, langurs, macaques, leopards, clouded leopards, elephants, civets, porcupines and many more. With more than 420 different bird species recorded, many consider the park as the best birdwatching location in Thailand. You won't regret it!

With a 1-day wildlife tour we will be exploring nature from early hours of the day till it gets dark, focusing mainly on wildlife watching. The tours include the following activities; daytime safari drives, jungle hiking, visiting some of the park's main highlights.

Because it is difficult to plan in the wild, our itineraries often get turned upside down. The following itinerary should be considered as an example;

Day 1, 6 am until 6 - 7 pm

After pick up at your hotel, we enter the national park and start with a slow drive looking for wildlife along the way. We might stop at some open forest clearings or ponds to look for birdlife and other creatures. And next we continue on foot to listen and scan for any animals that occur in the jungle.

We have lunch at the park restaurant. Even around there you might see interesting birdlife or more.

In the afternoon we walk on a dirt road through tall forest along a stream which offers good views into the canopy. This area is rich in bird species, but there is also chance to see mammals and other critters.

The late afternoon, we spend in the form of a safari drive. We explore waterholes, and the forest edges along the road where hopefully we will see some more species, before we eventually leave the park and drop you off at your hotel or meet your taxi to your next destination.

Together with my daughter we made a one-day guided tour. It was an unforgettable experience watching the wildlife in the park. Our professional guide, Bank, brought us to the best places by car but also into the jungle through trails. We highly recommend a visit, it's a must when you stay in the Hua Hin area.

He found many species so my son had an amazing time.

Thank you!!

It was a great pleasure and precious moment in #KaengKrachanNationalPark with Tontan Travel. Their guide was really professional and expert.

When we meet them, they ask what we want to see and adopt tour for our aim. Of course they did their best although the wildlife is out of their control. The guide is experienced and knowledgeable. When questions are popped up on our mind, he answers them well or just says he doesn't know honestly. I feel this is his true professionalism.

That's why we could not only been enjoyed trekking but also lean a lot about geobiologically important world heritage site of Kaeng Krachan National Park. The trekking took over 13 hours but we weren't bored at all.

In addition, he was also very concerned about our safety. He gave us accurate information about carnivorous mammals, poisonous insects and vipers.

All in all, we had an great experience that exceeded our expectations. We are completely satisfied and appreciate this high quality tour.

We had 1day tour and we enjoyed very much. Our guide was very professional and he also knew very well to adopt the day to our challenging needs with small children. I definitely recommend to take the tour and use the guide service.

Spent an enjoyable day in Kaeng Krachan. Our guide was excellent, very.conscientious, always keen to make sure we saw as much as possible.

Being in the forest was a joy and the gibbons in their high tree top a highlight.

This was the second time we visited this park. It is one of our favorite and the guide and the driver know every places to visit and see. Miost recommended.

Organization. Everything was very well organized and prepared. Every detail taken care of.

Guide. Our guide is an amazing person, a true enthusiast. A lot of knowledge and experience that we were able to rely on to find and observe various animals and plants. Great stories, great knowledge. We would strongly recommend that guide to anyone. We felt taken care of and safe.

Experience. The whole day was an amazing experience. Memories and pictures will last the whole life.

One negative aspect. The driver who took us from Hua Hin to the park (and back) did not make us feel very safe. He was nervous while driving, talking loudly on the phone (at 5am when we hoped for some extra sleep before reaching the park). Overall, I suggest getting a different driver.

By: Freddy Tan | posted Thu 14 Jul, 2022

Overall experience is ok. Just that we cannot control what animals to see which we didn't see much this time. Some area are out of bound due to tiger spotting.

We had a wonderful day in the park. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and had all the right equipment to allow us to find and see animals and other fauna.

Khao Yai National Park

Khao Yai National Park: The Premier Wildlife Destination in Thailand

In the initial stages of planning our Thailand trip, Drew researched the country’s attractions. Khao Yai National Park caught his attention as it ranked high in articles focusing on Thailand’s natural wonders.

Rather than centering our trip on urban destinations, we crafted our itinerary around national parks and pristine landscapes. Khao Yai became an early and enduring highlight of our journey, affirming its reputation as one of Thailand’s standout destinations for nature enthusiasts.

Elephants

Welcome to Our Khao Yai National Park Guide

In this travel guide, we will be sharing our experiences at Khao Yai National Park and providing some tips for your visit. But before we get started, let us introduce ourselves. We are Allie and Drew, originally from the DC area.

We crossed paths in 2018 and, during the pandemic, embraced a nomadic lifestyle. Allie, a NICU nurse, took a leap into travel nursing, securing a three month contract in Boston in the summer of 2022. Travel nursing and Drew’s tech job, which had become fully remote, allowed us to live in various cities including Austin, Loma Linda and recently in Seattle.

As we ventured beyond the familiarity of our hometowns, we discovered a passion for hiking and Allie developed an interest in photography. The diversity of the US, with its national parks and varied terrain, captivated us. Our goal is to continue combining work-related travels within the US with the freedom to take international trips whenever the opportunity arises.

Our 12-Day Backpacking Journey in Thailand

Inspired by a desire to explore nature and immerse in diverse landscapes, we chose Thailand as our next adventure – drawn by its national parks and cost-effective travel options. Following our tradition of exploring unique destinations after each nursing contract, we leveraged the advantage of traveling from the west coast of the US to save time and costs.

Embarking on a 12-day journey, we started in Bangkok – delving into the city’s rich culture by touring temples, wandering through Chinatown and participating in a captivating food tour. Our exploration then led us northeast to Khao Yai National Park where we spent two days immersed in the jungle, encountering wildlife and admiring the unique ecosystems.

Continuing our journey southward, we spent two nights in Prachuap Khiri Khan, a coastal gem off the tourist path. Here, we explored the landscapes and soaked in the authentic local charm. We visited two parks not far from the city – Kui Buri National Park and Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park.

We were particularly drawn to Kui Buri National Park because of its population of over 300 wild elephants within the park. Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park was also great – featuring beautiful limestone mountains and cliffs, a large cave with a temple within its walls and beautiful marshlands.

Further south, we reveled in the coastal beauty of Khao Lak, enjoying a luxurious stay in a resort and embarking on a full-day snorkeling tour to the Surin Islands . The vibrant coral reefs around the islands provided some of the most exceptional snorkeling experiences we have encountered.

Venturing inland to Khao Sok National Park, we explored Cheow Lan Lake (a huge artificial lake/reservoir dam), marveling at the towering limestone cliffs and surrounding lush jungle. Our stay in one of the floating resorts on the lake added a unique and serene touch to our Thailand trip.

The grand finale unfolded in Phuket, where we relished the island’s beauty and embarked on a memorable snorkel trip to the Phi Phi Islands . From Phuket, a hopper flight took us back to Bangkok, marking the end of our incredible journey through Thailand before returning to the United States.

Khao Yai National Park

Why Khao Yai National Park is a Must-Visit

The primary allure for our visit to Khao Yai stemmed from its reputation as the premier wildlife destination in Thailand. The park lived up to this distinction, offering exceptional opportunities to witness diverse wildlife.

Its accessibility from Bangkok, coupled with the quality accommodations surrounding the park, made it a compelling choice. Khao Yai’s blend of rich biodiversity, accessibility and comfortable accommodations solidified its place as a top-notch destination for nature enthusiasts like us.

Khao Yai National Park

An Overview of Our Two Day Itinerary

We dedicated two full days to exploring Khao Yai National Park, and booked a guided tour with Tontan Travel which included a night safari drive. This timeframe allowed us to delve into various ecosystems.

This took us from lush jungle trails to expansive grasslands, and elevated cliffs and mountain tops. The diverse landscapes presented numerous chances for wildlife encounters and our experiences were extraordinary.

Our tour commenced with a safari truck picking us up from our hotel. As we ventured into the park, Apple (our guide), navigated the terrain, encouraging us to get out of the truck when wildlife sightings occurred.

Among our initial sightings were gibbons swinging through the trees above our heads, an elusive orange whip-tail snake slithering through the branches, a scorpion along the side of the road, as well as many macaques.

Lunchtimes at the national park’s food hall became a delightful part of our routine, with a menu featuring delicious made-to-order Thai favorites. Following a satisfying meal, we embarked on a jungle hike, guided by our emphasis on moving quietly to heighten our chances of spotting wildlife.

Apple, a wealth of knowledge, stressed the significance of listening to the jungle sounds for safety and awareness. This approach proved crucial when we encountered a green viper hanging inches above where we had passed.

At the end of the first day, our exploration extended into the night with a safari drive, illuminated by a spotlight. This adventure revealed porcupines, foxes and deer – providing a different perspective of the park’s inhabitants.

On the second day, after more hikes and sightseeing, our guide treated us to a sunset spectacle. We stood at the base of a cave, watching many thousands of bats gracefully exiting for their evening feeding routine. The synchronized movement of the bats in a streamlined formation against the backdrop of the setting sun was a mesmerizing sight.

This two-day itinerary, complete with diverse landscapes and wildlife encounters, left us feeling that we had truly immersed ourselves in the beauty of Khao Yai National Park. We can’t recommend the park enough.

Benefits of Booking a Tour with Tontan Travel

For our Khao Yai visit, we opted for a guided tour, a decision we were absolutely thrilled with. Our knowledgeable guide from Tontan Travel not only provided fantastic insights into the park, wildlife, and the region but also tailored the experience to our priorities, focusing on wildlife sightings.

Navigating the jungle with quiet expertise, he pointed out fascinating details we never would have noticed without him like elephant tracks, giant spiders and their webs, fig trees, vines and vipers in low-hanging branches.

Booking through Tontan Travel proved to be an excellent choice. The tour included delicious, freshly cooked Thai meals within the park. Having a private tour allowed us to communicate our specific interests and preferences effectively. If you plan to visit Khao Yai National Park, we highly recommend Tontan Travel for a personalized and enriching experience.

Top 3 Highlights of Khao Yai National Park

1. elephant sightings.

Witnessing wild elephants both in the open field and casually strolling along the road was a mesmerizing experience. Observing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat gave us an appreciation for their grace and grandeur. The sheer size and gentle demeanor of the elephants made it a magical encounter, creating lasting memories (and amazing photos).

2. Hornbills in the Fruit Tree

One of the most enchanting moments on our tour was spent watching hornbills amid the lush canopy of a fruit tree. These large birds, adorned with distinctive orange beaks, added a vibrant and exotic touch to the natural surroundings. Watching the hornbills interact with each other and their environment showcased the national park’s rich biodiversity.

3. Night Tour Adventure

The night tour provided an opportunity to explore Khao Yai after dark, revealing a different side of its beauty. With the park closed to the public, we were immersed in its nocturnal wonders, encountering an array of animals that come to life after sunset. From elusive nocturnal creatures to the symphony of sounds in the dark, the night tour offered an immersive experience, allowing us to appreciate the park’s ecosystem in a new light.

Each of these highlights contributed to an awe-inspiring visit, making Khao Yai National Park a truly exceptional destination for nature enthusiasts and somewhere you don’t want to miss while visiting Thailand.

Where to Stay Near Khao Yai National Park

When visiting Khao Yai, we highly recommend staying in Pak Chong, a town located approximately 30-40 minutes outside of the national park’s main entrance. Pak Chong is a popular choice for visitors to Khao Yai. There are numerous options for accommodations and restaurants.

During our stay, we enjoyed the ambiance of Botanica Khao Yai Resort . This resort seamlessly incorporates the outdoors into its design, providing a comfortable retreat for nature enthusiasts with a touch of luxury.

Tips for Your Visit to Khao Yai National Park

  • Clothing, Footwear and Protection from Insects & Leeches: Pack long pants and long sleeves to protect yourself from ticks & leeches, and wear hiking boots or comfortable shoes suitable for walking through the forest. The guides often provide leech socks that come up to your knees. Wear them over your socks and pants for added protection. You will also want insect repellent on exposed skin to protect from mosquito and insect bites. Finally, be mindful of the weather, as conditions can vary. Pack a lightweight rain jacket or poncho in case of unexpected rain.
  • Guided Tours: Opt for guided tours (like Tontan Travel) to make the most of your visit in Khao Yai. Experienced guides can enhance your wildlife spotting, and provide valuable insights into the park’s flora and fauna. Guided tours also help to coordinate meals within the park, entrance fees, and communication with other Thai speaking guides and park rangers.
  • Getting There: Plan your transportation to Khao Yai National Park in advance. The park is easily accessible by car from Bangkok, and often your tour company can arrange for transfers from the surrounding areas.
  • Entry Fees and Regulations: Check the official Khao Yai National Park website here for up-to-date entry fees, park regulations and other info.
  • Best Time to Visit: Consider visiting during the “dry” season (November to February) for more comfortable weather and better wildlife sightings. Be aware that it may still rain and you should prepare with a rain jacket.
  • Accommodations: Book accommodations in advance. We recommend you plan to stay in Pakchong and perhaps at Botanica Khao Yai Resort.

I know this message is old and the OP has likely already gone, but I figured this reply would help anyone else googling the same thing.

We used tontan for a 3 day tour of khao yai and we couldn't of had more fun! Jay and tata (2 thai guys that spoke great English and were so knowledge of the jungle and we're really nice guys!) showed us so much wildlife and had a good 2/3 hour jungle trek every day followed by drives around looking for wildlife and short treks to waterfalls and beauty spots.

Just don't expect to see what you want to see in terms of wildlife.. I don't mean in negatively, just that obviously everything is wild afterall and you've got to simply be lucky to see certain things, so don't be disappointed! The dense jungle trek is an experience in itself!

In case anyone was wondering, after 3 days we saw: a crocodile, many hornbills and gibbons, macaques, deers, scorpions, millipedes, snakes, monitor lizards, Chinese water dragons, many many fantastic birds, bats, some wonderful butterflies and many lizards.

Actually, we did use TonTan when we visited the Park in May; and had a very good time with the guides. I think we had the same crew, and enjoyed our time with them. It was easy to customize the trip, and we saw many (although not all) the animals the other poster observed.

By: Tontan Travel Wildlife Tours Kaeng Krachan national park is the largest national park in Thailand. Finding the wildlife can at times be a bit more of a challenge compared to e.g., Khao Yai national park. But for those who appreciate the smaller, feathered and scaly creatures just as much as the large animals, the tours in Kaeng Krachan will not disappoint.

  6. Fantastic day trip with Tontan Travel

In general, we think that Tontan was the least prepared, yet most expensive travel agency compared to what we saw with the others. So, as a recommendation from our side, we would have appreciated an adjustment of certain parts of the tour regarding the weather situation.

  8. Amazing park

We had a fantastic guide called Mong through Tontan Travel Wildlife Tours, who had a great ability to spot things and then zoom in on them with his telescope for us to see. The tour company also provided a good open-topped truck (great for viewing but bring a jacket for the wind!) and driver and took us to good places for lunch each day.
