This movie is not meant to be politically correct but if there is a line, Wirkola has definitely stepped over it.

“The Trip” isn’t for the faint of heart. Some scenes are extremely intense and the further it goes the gorier the movie gets. Yet it’s all fused with this wicked sense of humor that often pops up in the most unexpected moments.

This is a gruesomely graphic and pitch-black comedy-horror-thriller loaded with entertaining plot twists great and small.

There's a whimsical, Wes Anderson-like quality to the way Wirkola introduces characters and plot twists, though the tone is more Martin McDonagh with a dash of Quentin Tarantino.

What You Need To Know:

(RoRo, B, LLL, S, A, DD, M) Strong Romantic worldview with some moral elements in whimsical, improvised comedy based on British TV comedy series in which Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon play themselves as Coogan is hired by a magazine to review Northern England’s finest restaurants and takes his best friend, fellow comic Rob Brydon, so characters appear to enjoy the high life, but a sense of melancholy prevails under the surface as it becomes clear that Coogan is miserable being single after age 40 and, thus, having family is extolled, as Brydon is shown to be lonely without his wife and children in contrast to Coogan; at least 16 obscenities (including several “f” and “s” words) and 10 profanities; no violence; two scenes imply Coogan has had casual fornication the night before, as the respective women sneak out of his hotel room, leaving him looking miserable; alcohol use; smoking and one woman offers Coogan cocaine, which he declines, but she proceeds to snort a lot of it; and, rivalry and jealousy.

More Detail:

THE TRIP is a whimsical, impressively improvised comedy starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon in a mockumentary-style that depicts the pair of British comics traveling the roads of Northern England for a week to review fine dining restaurants for a magazine.

Coogan is the bigger star and invites Brydon along for the ride when Coogan’s girlfriend declines. They comically discuss and argue an endless array of topics, with particular focus on celebrity tales since both men are excellent impersonators who love to one-up each other.

However, under the surface lies a melancholy undertone, largely due to the fact Coogan is over age 40 and still hopelessly single after a nasty breakup with his last girlfriend. Meanwhile, Brydon is constantly talking about his wife and children and is experiencing loneliness as well. Brydon’s marriage and its stability are seen as ideal, especially when compared to what Coogan is going through as a single man.

Along the way, Coogan engages in implied one-night stands with women working in hotels where he stays. Nothing is shown other than bare shoulders on his part, but the women leave looking awkward, and he looks miserable as he wakes up. One woman he meets, a former conquest, offers him cocaine, which he turns down, but then she uses a mountain of it herself. Coogan and Bryson drink alcohol in restaurants throughout (but not to excess), and Coogan smokes cigarettes a few times to calm his nerves.

THE TRIP is quiet and thoughtful compared to most major comedies, but its rich charms are rooted in the genuine humanity of its characters. In it, Coogan is revealed in a different light than usual, showing how miserable he is after his casual sex adventures and clearly wishing for a stronger connection to other human beings, including the son to whom he was largely an absentee father. What the movie shows is that show business is illusory and that it’s families that matter more than any career.

All that said, extreme caution is advised due to the movie’s lewd content, foul language and brief drug scene.

Fogelman's past resume shouldn't leave us too surprised with his ability to bring a humorous dose of relationship reality to the screen..

It started out as a road trip for inventor Andy Brewster (Seth Rogen) to peddle his wares, but after he invites his Mom (Barbra Streisand) along for the ride, it is sure to be a guilt trip too.

The guide to our grades, parent movie review by rod gustafson.

Andrew Brewster (Seth Rogen) has his bags packed and is ready to set out on a road trip that will turn him into a business tycoon. But a quick stop to see his mother Joyce (Barbara Streisand) sends his plans in a whole new direction after she tells him about an old romance prior to her meeting his late father. Anxious to see his mom literally engaged in a new relationship (and focusing her motherly concerns somewhere else) he makes her an offer she can’t refuse: Join him for the trek across the country, during which he will stop at various retail head offices to pitch his organic cleaning product, and they can spend some quality time together. What she doesn’t know is Andrew has discovered her former flame lives on the west coast and that will be the ultimate destination of their voyage.

We’re not surprised that their tepid relationship is stretched early in the trip when Joyce unfolds a 12 CD talking book biography of a hermaphrodite (we hear brief sexual dialogue in the early scenes). Things take another turn for the worse when mom is determined to follow Andrew into the office of his first appointment.

The overall message is positive but don’t mistake screenwriter Dan Fogelman’s past work with Disney ( Cars , Cars 2 , Tangled , Bolt ) as a reason to take the kids. Aside from a likely lack of interest in this Gen Y’s emotional crisis, the movie contains profanity, including a single sexual expletive. There are also some mild sexual discussions, like Joyce’s frequently voiced belief that hitchhikers typically rape people and her motherly concern that a childhood problem with her son’s private body parts may be contributing to his lack of adult love-life. There is a short scene in a strip bar (no nudity is evident), as well as a scuffle between Andrew and another man that leaves him with a badly bruised face.

Fogelman’s past resume shouldn’t leave us too surprised with his ability to bring a humorous dose of relationship reality to the screen. Rather than resorting to over-the-top scenes full of unbelievable characters, this film instead offers a palette of people and situations that provide insight into the increasingly common interaction of an unwed thirty-something child with his widowed mother. It’s a good start to what may be a productive discussion on your next trip.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that The Big Trip is a Russian animated film for kids, adapted for English-speaking audiences using American actors. It's an adventure in which a misguided stork delivers a baby panda to the wrong house in the wrong neighborhood. A group of kooky animals unite to take the little bundle a long distance to find its rightful parents. On their journey, they encounter lots of cartoon action. A python causes the mayhem. He's a scary adversary: cackling, threatening, and baring his fangs. There are chases, fights, treacherous falls, and the baby panda, as well as his five "godfathers," are in peril. No one is injured or killed. Messages about teamwork, finding courage, and getting along are included in the story. All of the characters are male except for one. Some mild insults (i.e., "tomato-face," "fang-face," "clown") are heard along the way. The movie isn't suitable for younger or sensitive kids who aren't comfortable with real versus pretend violence. So-so Big Nate copycat about animals saving the world.

What's the story.

A peculiar bundle lands near the house of Mic-Mic Bear ( Drake Bell ) in THE BIG TRIP. When the big, brown bear discovers a baby panda and watches a soaring stork disappear in the sky, the awful truth comes to him -- this special delivery is a mistake! The baby panda is adorable, but he cries a lot, and he definitely doesn't belong in Mic-Mic's forest. Oscar ( Pauly Shore ), an annoying hare, appeals to Mic-Mic. He wants to come along on the trip the bear must make to find the baby's rightful home. As the journey begins, the two travelers and the little panda encounter very unusual companions -- a poetic tiger, a very frightened wolf, and a pelican who almost never stops talking. Unfortunately, distance isn't the only problem the well-meaning animals must conquer. They must also face the recurring appearances of a terrifying and powerful python who means them harm.

Is It Any Good?

The story is easy to understand, the characters cute, and the animation is fine; however, the movie is repetitious, uninspired, and its cartoon peril may be a bit too scary for the target audience. The Big Trip makes an earnest attempt to follow its purposefully quirky animal folks on an obstacle-filled journey with a happy ending; and it succeeds, in part. Younger kids (who are okay with cartoon violence) will appreciate the funny characters, but won't get some of the jokes (references to Shakespeare?), nor is there sufficient pace to keep them engaged. And, there's not enough inventiveness, wit, or energy to hold the attention of older ones.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the scary moments in The Big Trip . Even though it's a cartoon movie, which events might be disturbing for younger kids or more sensitive kids? Why is it importance to understand the impact of violence on kids ? How do the adults in your home determine which movies are suitable for your family?

In this movie, the animals behave like humans ("anthropomorphism"). Why does telling a human story using animals as the characters work so well? How does it make the story both relatable and interesting for you? Find out more about anthropomorphism.

What helped the very frightened wolf find his courage? Have you ever behaved in a courageous way to help someone even when you were scared? How did it make you feel?
