South east asia travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What countries are a part of South East Asia?

The region of South East Asia encompasses the following countries:

Philippines

Timor-Leste

Do I need a visa to travel to South East Asia?

Whether you need a visa to travel to South East Asia depends on what country you're a national of and which country you travel to.

Generally, passport holders from the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom don't need visas to travel around South East Asia, but visa requirements will vary from country to country.

For example, citizens from the previously mentioned countries will need a visa to travel to Vietnam, however, they won't require a visa for Thailand.

If you're unsure of the visa requirements of the country you're traveling to, it's best to check on government-run websites or at your nearest embassy or consulate.

What is the internet access like in South East Asia?

The internet access in South East Asia can vary from country to country and between different regions in that country.

Most hotel chains or other accommodation options in major cities will have wi-fi, so it'll be easy to connect to the internet.

B uying an international SIM card with a local provider is recommended if you'd rather have no restrictions (and no exorbitant data roaming fees). This still doesn't mean you're guaranteed to have access to the internet though as the signal is often limited or unreliable in rural areas in countries such as Laos, Timor-Leste and Myanmar.

What are the toilets like in South East Asia?

The toilet facilities in South East Asia differ depending on which country you're in and what region of that country you're in.

Most major cities have westernized toilet facilities in places such as restaurants and hotels, but the further from urban areas you are, the more likely you'll find squat toilets, so set your expectations accordingly.

Toilet paper is also a rare find unless you're in major cities or popular tourist areas, so it's best to always pack your own in preparation.

Can I drink the water in South East Asia?

There aren't many countries in South East Asia where the tap water is recommended for drinking, especially in Laos and Cambodia.

To avoid getting sick, buy bottled water or use filtered water to brush your teeth.

You should also be mindful when showering, ask for drinks with no ice in them and peel all fruit before you eat them.

While Malaysia is considered to have the safest drinking water, it still has a different mineral content than your stomach might be used to so it's best to stick to filtered or bottled water where possible.

When is the best time to visit South East Asia?

The best time to travel to South East Asia is between November and February when the weather is relatively dry, humidity levels are low and temperatures are warm but not uncomfortable.

However, this is considered to be 'peak season' so expect large crowds at popular tourist destinations and increased accommodation prices in major cities.

If you want to avoid all of that, try traveling during the shoulder seasons of March to May and September to November.

If you can, avoid traveling from June to August as this is South East Asia's rainy, cyclone season.

Is tipping common in South East Asia?

While it might not be as prevalent as it is in the US, tipping is still part of the culture in most South East Asian countries.

H ow much you tip and in what scenarios tipping is expected will differ depending on the country you travel in.

For example, tipping isn't expected or required in Malaysia and Singapore (and can even be considered rude), but countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia are starting to accept tipping culture.

What currency will I need in South East Asia?

The currency you need when traveling in South East Asia depends on which countries you'll be visiting, with each country having its own currency.

Here is a list of countries with their currencies:

  • Vietnam - Vietnamese Dong (VND)
  • Indonesia - Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)
  • Singapore - Singapore Dollar (SGD)
  • Cambodia - Cambodian Riel (KHR)
  • Malaysia - Malaysian Ringgit (MYR)
  • Thailand - Thai Baht (THB)
  • Philippines - Philippine Peso (PHP)
  • Myanmar - Myanmar Kyat (MMK)
  • Timor-Leste - United States Dollars (USD)
  • Laos - Lao Kip (LAK)
  • Brunei - Brunei Dollar (BND)

Do I need to bring cash with me to South East Asia?

It's worth bringing cash with you if you travel around South East Asia, as paying with cash is still very prevalent in most countries.

Countries like Vietnam and Thailand are big on markets and hawker hall type cafeterias, so having cash is usually the easiest way to buy things and makes bargaining for items more accessible.

Is South East Asia safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Most of the countries in South East Asia have a thriving LGBTQIA+ scene, especially Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Discretion is still advised for travelers of the LGBTQIA+ community when it comes to public displays of affection, particularly if you're traveling away from the larger cities to more rural areas where acceptance of same-sex relationships may not be as common.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Southeast Asia is a diverse region made up of 11 countries, each with its own unique culture, landscapes, and attractions. Southeast Asia includes Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar (Burma), Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, and Brunei.

Explore our Southeast Asia tour packages in the following top destinations:

  • Bali, Indonesia

Typically, the cooler dry season from November to February in most Southeast Asian countries is an ideal time to visit. When planning a trip, consider that the best time to travel varies across the diverse region and from one country to the next. The ideal time for your trip depends on the countries you plan to explore and your preferences for weather and crowds.

For most of the region, the months between November and February offer minimal rainfall, and the temperatures are comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Though offering excellent weather conditions, this is also peak tourist season so the beaches, temples, and major cities are more crowded.

To avoid the crowds, consider planning a trip between March and May as the weather remains warm and dry before the summer monsoon season arrives. For beach destinations like Thailand or Bali, these months are also great options for snorkeling and water sports as the seas are calmer.

While the best time to visit Southeast Asia for most is during the dry winter months, with strategic planning around your interests and preferences, any time of year can be ideal for exploring the diverse region and its popular destinations.

With its mix of cultures, landscapes, and attractions, deciding where to visit in Southeast Asia can be challenging. Every country has its own stunning destinations, but some of the best places to visit in Southeast Asia include:

  • Bangkok , Thailand: Thailand’s capital blends ancient temples, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan charm. It is a gateway to the country’s history and culture, whether in and around the Old Town or taking a day trip to Ayutthaya.
  • Hanoi, Vietnam: Vietnam’s capital offers a mix of French colonial architecture, narrow alleyways hiding authentic food stalls, and a charming Old Quarter. Walk around Hoan Kiem Lake, visit Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and learn about the country’s dramatic history.
  • Bali, Indonesia: Known for its lush jungles, terraced rice paddies, and spectacular beaches, Bali in Indonesia is a tropical paradise. You can snorkel to see marine life, discover ancient spiritual artifacts, and tour the breathtaking rice terraces.
  • Angkor Wat, Cambodia: Siem Reap serves as the gateway to the magnificent ancient temple complex of Angkor Wat, a Khmer architectural masterpiece recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Escorted & Package Tours in Southeast Asia

Escorted and General-Interest Trips

Among the most experienced and knowledgeable tour operators specializing in Southeast Asia are Absolute Asia and Asia Transpacific Journeys. In-country tour providers Diethelm and Exotissimo can do anything from arranging deluxe tours to just helping out with small details or bookings. Most companies allow clients to design their own trip or deviate from exact schedules (often at a small cost). Companies such as Intrepid, among others, offer unique itineraries for solo travelers.

Here are the top outfitters:

  • Abercrombie & Kent (1520 Kensington Rd., Ste. 212, Oakbrook, IL 60523; tel. 800/554-7016; fax 630/954-3324; www.abercrombieandkent.com) offers Southeast Asia programs with numerous comprehensive itineraries. This well-known luxury-tour operator can take you to Thailand (on spa tours, too), Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Laos, with stays at the finest hotels in Southeast Asia, such as the Oriental in Bangkok and the Sofitel Metropole in Hanoi.
  • Absolute Asia (180 Varick St., 16th floor, New York, NY 10014; tel. 800/736-8187; fax 212/627-4090; www.absoluteasia.com), founded in 1989, offers an array of innovative itineraries, specializing in individual or small-group tours customized to your interests, with experienced local guides and excellent accommodations. Talk to these folks about tours that feature art, cuisine, religion, antiques, photography, wildlife study, archaeology, and soft adventure -- they can plan a specialized trip to see just about anything you can dream up for any length of time. They can also book you on excellent coach programs in Indochina.
  • Asia Transpacific Journeys (2995 Center Green Court, Boulder, CO 80301; tel. 800/642-2742 or 303/443-6789; fax 303/443-7078; www.asiatranspacific.com) coordinates tours to every corner of South and Southeast Asia and the Pacific. It deals with small groups and custom programs that include luxury accommodations. The flagship package, the 23-day "Passage to Indochina" tour, takes you through the major attractions of Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia with a well-planned itinerary, and it is but one of many fun tours that promote cultural understanding. It's a model of sustainable tourism and a highly recommended choice.
  • Backroads (801 Cedar St., Berkeley, CA 94710; tel. 800/462-2848 or 510/527-1555; fax 510/527-1444; www.backroads.com), the cycling and hiking specialist, has an 11-day bike tour of Vietnam and Angkor Wat, an 8-day Thailand Golden Triangle tour, and others. Check out the website; Backroads is always coming up with innovative itineraries in the region.
  • Diethelm Travel (Kian Gwan Building II, 140/1 Wireless Rd., Bangkok 10330, Thailand; tel. 662/660-7000; fax 662/660-7020; www.diethelmtravel.com), a Swiss-based tour company, has offices throughout the region (it's a popular choice for European tour groups). The folks here are friendly and helpful; they also operate as de facto tourist information centers in places such as Laos. Diethelm has full tour programs and, like Exotissimo , can help with any details for travelers in-country, arrange car rental or vans for small groups, and offer discount options to all locations.
  • Exotissimo Travel (40 bis, Rue du fg Poissonniére, 75010 Paris, France, tel. 149/490-360, fax 149/490-369; or Saigon Trade Center, 37 Ton Duc Thang, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, tel. 08/825-1723, fax 08/829-5800; www.exotissimo.com), a French outfit and outbound (in-country) agency with offices in every major city in the region, has excellent guides on-site. Agents not only can arrange all-inclusive tours, but also are helpful with all travel details, from ticketing to visas. See the office locations in each chapter.
  • Imaginative Traveler (1 Betts Ave., Martlesham Heath, Suffolk IP5 7RH, U.K.; tel. 0800/316-2717; fax 0280/742-3045; www.imaginative-traveler.com), a U.K.-based firm, gets rave reviews for organizing all sorts of bicycling, trekking, and motorcycling adventures throughout Southeast Asia, particularly Indochina.
  • Intrepid Travel (11 Spring St., Fitzroy, Victoria, 3065 Australia; tel. 613/9473-2626, or 877/488-1616 in the U.S.; fax 613/9419-4426; www.intrepidtravel.com), a popular Australian operator, is probably the best choice for an off-the-beaten-track tour of Asia. Intrepid caters trips for the culturally discerning, those with humanitarian goals, those in search of comfort and adventure, those on a budget, or those looking for a looser structure and lots of options. Its name is its motto, and with some of the best guides in Asia, these folks will take you to the back of beyond safely, in style, and with lots of laughs.

Special-Interest Trips

For cultural tours and museum tours, contact any of the smaller local travel agents listed in each chapter. For the amateur ethnographer, contact any of the ecotour outfitters below or those listed in specific sections (particularly in the north of Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, or western Cambodia).

Outdoor Adventures & Ecotours -- Adventure-seekers can find any number of small outfitters in many parts of Southeast Asia. Consider first what kind of terrain you'd like to explore -- the choices are anything from jungle to dry plains, coastal estuaries to inland rivers. The best areas to get out and get your boots wet are in the farthest reaches of Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam.

In the north of Thailand, go with Contact Travel (420/3 Changklan Road., Chiang Mai; tel. 05320-4664; fax 05327-9505; www.activethailand.com) for cycling, off-road, and other ecoadventures. In the far south of Thailand, Paddle Asia (9/71 Thanon Rasdanusorn, Phuket; tel. 07624-0952; fax 07621-6145; www.paddleasia.com) has some of the best nature kayaking trips -- you're guaranteed to see some exciting wildlife.

In Laos, Green Discovery (P.O. Box 9811, Hang Boun Rd., Ban Hay Sook, Vientaine; tel. 021/264528; www.greendiscoverylaos.com) runs great rafting and kayaking adventures anywhere in the country and has some unique village and cultural tours as well.

In the north of Vietnam, the folks at Handspan (78 Ma May St., Hanoi; tel. 04/3926-2828; fax 04/926-2383; www.handspan.com) as well as Buffalo Tours (94 Ma May St., Hanoi; tel. 04/828-0702; www.buffalotours.com) put together exciting kayaking adventures in Halong Bay, hiking trips to Sapa, and jeep trips up to Dien Bien Phu. In central Vietnam, the old French colonial hill station of Dalat plays host to a great outfitter, Phat Tire Ventures (73 Truong Cong Dinh, Dalat; tel. 063/829-422; fax 063/820-331; www.phattireventures.com), which can help you rock climb, mountain bike, or trek with the most professional guides and experienced technicians.

In Malaysia, Asian Overland Services (tel. 03/4252-9100; fax 03/4257-1133; www.asianoverland.com.my) offers homestays in Taman Negara national park, Lemanak longhouse stays (Sarawak), diving off Sipadan Island, and a number of diverse tours planned with sensitivity to the environment and local cultures.

In Bali, Sobek Tours (tel. 361/287059 ), Bali Discovery Tours (tel. 361/286283; www.balidiscovery.com), and Bali Adventure Tours (tel. 361/721480; www.baliadventuretours.com) can both arrange fun day and overnight itineraries to volcanoes, the jungle, and rural villages.

The folks at Exotissimo Travel have offices throughout Southeast Asia and are the best for arranging all kinds of rural adventures.

Diving Trips -- There are more dive outfits in Southeast Asia than we could possibly list. Be sure to choose a PADI-accredited dive company and ask lots of questions before any trip: What is the ratio of diver to instructor? Does the company have its own boat?

In Thailand, look under Phuket or Ko Tao; in Vietnam, try Nha Trang; in Cambodia, Sihanoukville; in Malaysia, Langkawi.

Cooking Schools -- The varied cuisine of the countries of Southeast Asia is a veritable banquet for the gourmet or the fearless eater, and there's no better way to learn about and participate in a culture than to take a cooking class. Opportunities abound.

In Thailand, a favorite option is the upscale Blue Elephant Restaurant and Cooking School (233 S. Sathorn Rd., Bangkok; tel. 02673-9353; www.blueelephant.com), set in an old mansion in the heart of the city. The restaurant is a popular luxury chain from Europe that has returned to its roots and set up shop in the Thai capital. It's not to be missed. In the north of Thailand, try the Chiang Mai Cookery School (47/2 Moonmuang Rd., Chiang Mai; tel. 05320-6388; www.thaicookeryschool.com). In the far south, there are lots of small resorts with cooking schools attached.

In northern Laos, enjoy a fun and informative day at Tamnak Lao Restaurant and Cooking School (Sakhalin Rd., Ban Wat Sene, Luang Prabang; tel. 071/252-525 ), where you'll not only get the dish on Lao specialties and some unique derivations, but also learn a good bit about local culture, history, and language.

In central Vietnam, Ms. Vy, who runs the Mermaid (Nhu Y) Restaurant (02 Tran Phu St., Hoi An; tel. 0510/861-527; www.hoianhospitality.com) and several other establishments in town, offers great cooking programs of varying length.

Gourmands in Singapore shouldn't miss a chance to take a quick course at the Raffles Culinary Academy (tel. 65/6412-1256; www.raffles.com). Whole-day courses on Asian and Western haute cuisine are led by chefs from the grand hotel's acclaimed restaurants.

In Bali, try Bumbu Bali (tel. 361/774502 ) in the south for Heinz von Holzen's informative cooking classes. The Alila Manggis' Sea Salt restaurant (tel. 363/41011 ) holds cooking classes with chef Penny Williams. Executive chef Chris Salans gives gourmet French-Indonesian cooking classes at his restaurant Mosaic (tel. 361/975768 ), which is also well worth a trip for a meal.

The whole trip was amazing, I got to see, learn and do lots of different things. Would recommend it and especially Cheak as a guide to everyone, as he was constantly helpful, really enthusiastic about his job and the countries we've travelled and in general made the trip as great and fun as it was.

10 Days in Vietnam From South to North

Our tour, hosted by Hoi An Express, was wonderful, 10 days we will never forget. We felt well-cared for every step of the way, from the morning we were met at the airport in Ho Chi Minh City (at 1AM!) until we were dropped off at the Hanoi Airport ten days later. Each of our guides was friendly, fluent in English, and full of valuable and interesting information. Each day included one or more new and fascinating experiences. Our hotels ranged from satisfactory to very good. (We did not opt to upgrade our accommodations from the basic level.). All hotels felt safe. Our rooms, while sometimes a little rustic, were clean and well-supplied. Breakfasts also ranged from satisfactory to excellent. All hotels were well located to support our activities during the abundant free time included in the itinerary. We walked a lot with our hotel as a base. Transportation via Grab was also easy and economical. Our tour group ranged in size from three people (for most of the tour) to five (during the middle part of the tour) to 20 for the Halong Bay overnight cruise. These travelmates added greatly to the overall experience. We enjoyed new friendships. When we plan a future Asian tour, I will start by checking out TourRadar and Hoi An Express. They worked very, very well for us.

Thai Experience

I did the 18 day Thai Intro tour and it was worth every penny. We had the most amazing group leader named Dan who made the trip an unforgettable experience. He was so knowledgeable about Thailand and the culture. He also made sure everyone was well looked after and made it his priority to ensure everyone was having a good time. I could not recommend this tour more. So much crammed into 18 days. An experience that will be with you for life. Highly recommend!

Eve and Smile are a very good duo, Smile is the caring one, Eve is the party animator and together they are a good mix! Both are very helpful and want only the best for us! Super tour guide! For the paid price of the trip, however, there could have been more food integrated. In addition, the extra dinners offered in the group were in places that were less spectacular and yet a bit more expensive. This could be changed. Either to really great location with hammer view and more expensive or just continue to markets at hünstige prices. Kind regards Linda

Reviews of Small Group tours to South East Asia

This was my first time ever travelling without family and it was amazing! One of the best months of my life. Our CEO Tong was brilliant and full of knowledge about where we were going and what we would be doing. He made sure to have enough time for anyone and helped in anyway he could to make things run smoothly for everyone on tour including myself. If you go on this tour, make sure you ask for Tong or (Phanet Tep) as your CEO!
Embarking on the "Jungle Hikes & Island Nights" group journey from Bangkok to Singapore was an adventure of a lifetime, magnificently organized and flawlessly executed. From start to finish, the expedition was a resounding success, thanks to impeccable planning and an itinerary that promised—and delivered—an extraordinary experience. The locations we explored were nothing short of spectacular, offering us a diverse palette of experiences that ranged from the serenity of lush jungles to the vibrant nightlife on picturesque islands. The balance between exhilarating hikes and lively parties was just right, ensuring that every day was filled with new adventures and opportunities to create lasting memories. A significant part of this trip's charm was the fantastic group of fellow travelers I had the fortune to journey with. It's rare to find such a harmonious blend of personalities and backgrounds, but we clicked instantly, transforming a group of strangers into lifelong friends. The camaraderie that developed amongst us added a whole new layer of enjoyment to the experience. A special shoutout is deserved for our CEO, Fon, whose expertise, passion, and warm personality made her not just a guide, but a true friend. Her dedication to ensuring that we all had an incredible time was evident in every aspect of the trip. Fon, you are a gem, and your efforts were genuinely appreciated by all of us! However, no adventure is without its lessons. The pace of the tour, while exhilarating, sometimes felt a bit rushed. Extending the itinerary by a day or two could provide a more relaxed pace, allowing for some much-needed rest days amidst the action-packed schedule. For travelers like myself, towering over 185cm, be prepared for a squeeze, especially on the night trains which proved to be quite the challenge. An additional note for future adventurers: consider booking an extra night in Singapore to fully explore the wonders this city has to offer. The tour's conclusion in Singapore feels like just the beginning of another adventure waiting to be discovered. In summary, the "Jungle Hikes & Island Nights" trip from Bangkok to Singapore was an unforgettable journey filled with incredible sights, sounds, and experiences. While there's room for minor adjustments, the overall experience was profoundly impactful, leaving us with memories to cherish for a lifetime. To those seeking adventure, camaraderie, and a touch of magic, this journey comes highly recommended.

24 Perfectly Chilled Places to Visit in Southeast Asia

Everybody needs a relaxing holiday, now more than ever. Here are the best places to visit in Southeast Asia to relax and rejuvenate. From idyllic islands to laid-back towns and tropical rain forests.

Breathe in. Slow and deep. Breathe out. Slowly. Visualize happiness. Feels good right? Sometimes all we need is a relaxing vacation where we can disconnect from everyday life, unwind and BREATHE. Since nowhere says RELAX quite like Southeast Asia, we are making a list of the best places to visit in Southeast Asia to relax (and forget that 2020/2021/2022 ever happened.)

While we are quite proficient in the art of chilling, we decided to ask our favourite travel writers Zen masters to help in our search of the best places to visit in Southeast Asia for a relaxing vacation.

Reluctantly, they fell out of their hammocks, took the last sip of iced coffee through a bamboo straw, put a final shell on a sandcastle, got up from a downward-facing dog pose, breathed out slowly, and this is what we eventually came up with.

Why Visit Southeast Asia to Relax?

Places to visit in Southeast Asia for a relaxing vacation

Relaxation comes in many forms. From surrounding yourself with nature to floating weightlessly in the sea to enjoying delicious food or challenging yourself to do something new or creative. No matter how you choose to reach Nirvana, Southeast Asia has something for every personality to help you reach tranquillity.

After many relaxing holidays all over this beautiful region, we always come back feeling refreshed, happy and thankful. We finally figured out why.

Yes, the forests, beaches, lakes, mountains and rivers are incredible. The massages are cheap and heavenly. The food not only tastes damn good, but it also looks beautiful. It offers exceptional value for money , and deciding whose kidney will be sold on the dark web to pay for the holiday is never an issue. We love Southeast Asia for all these things, but that’s not why we keep on going back.

We go back for the people and their genuine warm hospitality , their unforced smiles, their sense of humour and their deep connection with their land and culture. Surround yourself with happy people and you’ll be happy too, I guess. You can’t help but get caught up in all that laid-back happiness and go with the flow.

Did we mention the food is dynamite and the massages cheap and heavenly?

Before we get carried away, let’s look at the most relaxing destinations to visit in Southeast Asia for a peaceful getaway, from tropical islands and lakes to laid-back towns and virgin forests.

Amed, Indonesia

Places to visit in Southeast Asia

The east coast of Bali is a world away from the glitz and glam, the beach clubs and the trendy hotspots on the opposite side of the island. Amed must be the most underrated destination in Bali, and people looking for a relaxing stay will love this town which is still a fishing village at heart.

Amed is a collection of 7 fishing villages, and along the road connecting these villages you can find boutique hotels, guesthouses, infinity pools, warungs and restaurants, yoga lessons, dive schools, free-range chickens and if you look very carefully- the true meaning of life.

The snorkelling in Amed is among the best there is in Bali, and it’s right off the beach. Any beach in Amed will have very good snorkeling, but the underwater temple at Jemeluk beach or the Japanese shipwreck is not to be missed.

With a delicious food scene, deciding where to eat in Amed could be the toughest choice you’ll have to make each day. Just like Amed itself, the food is fresh, beautiful, unpretentious and very affordable.

Where to stay in Amed Aquaterrace

You’ll never want to leave the amazing infinity pool overlooking the beach below. Luxury accommodation with warm hospitality, great breakfast choices and in-house massage service. Afternoon coffee/tea and snacks are enjoyed poolside. We’ve been to Aquaterrace twice and look forward to returning ASAP.

Ubud, Indonesia

Places to visit in Southeast Asia for a relaxing vacation: Ubud

Merely mentioning Ubud conjures up images of relaxation, rejuvenation and well-being. If there is one place in Southeast Asia that has perfected the art of happiness and comfort, it must be Ubud.

Whether you spend hours in the pool, drink only organic juice, go vegan or practice yoga, Ubud will not disappoint those in search of inner peace and tranquillity. While there are many things to do in Ubud , it’s also a great place to simply do nothing.

You can spend your lazy days visiting some of the best spas in the world, practising yoga, visiting temples, exploring sacred forests or trying and identify just how many shades of green the rice paddies have. Ubud is perhaps the best place to visit in Southeast Asia if you’re feeling creative and want to learn a new skill.

Being the cultural heart of Bali , artists and craftsmen in Ubud still practice their traditional trades, and welcome visitors to learn by doing. A silversmith could teach you how to make your own jewellery, or you could learn how to cook a killer Balinese meal.

Foodies, vegans, carnivores and normal people like you and me will love Ubud for its beautiful and delicious food. Eating well is as important a part of a relaxing holiday as spending time in the pool or at the spa. Look at our favourite places to fight hunger if you can’t decide where to eat in Ubud .

Ubud offers fantastic value for money, which means that getting a private pool is within reach for most of us. The beauty of getting a private pool villa in Ubud is that there is something out there for every taste and budget.

Where to stay in Ubud The Satya Villa

A private pool villa on a budget, the Satya Villa is perfect for couples looking for an intimate and romantic stay in Ubud. Located in the middle of the rice paddies, a short scooter ride away from Monkey Forest Road and its restaurants. Highly recommended!

Lake Toba, Indonesia

Traditional Batak guest house in Samosir island, Lake Toba

When the world’s largest supervolcano blew its top thousands of years ago, it left behind something incredibly beautiful on the Indonesian island of Sumatra . Lake Toba is an enormous volcanic lake surrounded by steep, green mountains with an island in the middle of the lake. If an island on an island is not taking relaxation to the next level, then I don’t know what will.

The sleepy town of Tuktuk on Samosir island has been synonymous with serious relaxation for decades, and still lives up to its name today. The friendly and fun-loving Batak people from Lake Toba are the perfect hosts, and they take immense pride in sharing their slice of heaven with visitors (who soon become friends).

By day you can swing in your hammock, take refreshing dips in the lake, get a massage in the garden or drink cup after cup of Sumatra coffee. You might have seen Lake Toba Coffee at Starbucks Reserve, but nothing beats having it in its natural habitat.

Exploring Samosir island by scooter is just wonderful. The island is big, and a drive all around the island takes a whole day. Along the way, you can explore traditional Batak villages, chase waterfalls, meet coffee farmers or wave to grazing water buffaloes.

Before sunset, you’ll hear the Batak men strumming their guitars all around Samosir. At night you can always find a spot where old and new friends gather to celebrate a beautiful life like only the Batak people of Lake Toba can. With all that singing and dancing, no wonder the people of Lake Toba are such a happy bunch. The Bataks love having a good time, and they want you to have one too.

If Lake Toba is not heaven, it surely can’t be far away.

Where to stay in Lake Toba Romlan Guesthouse

Long time favourite with those who know how to relax, Romlan Guesthouse is deservedly popular. Beautiful location right on the lake. Small, quiet and cosy, guests soon become friends and often return year after year for more of that Toba magic.

Khao Sok National Park, Thailand

Khao Sok National Park in Thailand

Recommended by Jessie of Pocket Wanderings For the ultimate get-away-from-it-all escape in Southeast Asia, visit the beautiful Khao Sok National Park in Thailand. The park offers over 739 square metres of stunning natural beauty – from the recognisable limestone cliffs and the brightly coloured lake to luscious rainforest and diverse wildlife.

Khao Sok is located in the province of Surat Thani, away from all the popular tourist traps. It may be a little trickier to get to, but that’s exactly what makes it so wonderfully relaxing. Spend one night in a jungle treehouse and then head into the depths of the park to stay in a floating raft house on the lake. Here you’ll find limited electricity and no phone signal, making it the perfect place to truly switch off from the outside world.

Spend your days exploring the park on foot or by kayak. Discover cascading waterfalls, hidden caves, and stunning viewpoints, as well as an abundance of wildlife and plants. Or simply sit back and relax at your accommodation, going for the occasional swim in the lake to cool off from the humidity.

Given how remote the area is, the accommodation is generally quite basic, but this is part of its humble appeal. It’s a chance to really immerse yourself in nature and unwind from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy areas of Thailand.

Where to stay in Khao Sok National Park 500 Rai

True to their slogan – Disconnect to Reconnect, 500 Rai is THE place to relax! Stunning overwater bungalows on the Cheow Lan Lake, set in a midst of natural surroundings. Guests can indulge in an outdoor pool and enjoy amazing views of lush green hills.

Kampot, Cambodia

A relaxing place next to the river in Kampot, Cambodia

Recommended by Emily of Wander-Lush Nothing says ‘relaxation’ quite like lounging in a thatched bungalow beneath a ceiling of palm fronds on the edge of a languid river. Kampot  has long been regarded as a favourite escape from the hustle and bustle of Phnom Penh, and it offers visitors to Cambodia a welcome contrast to the Kingdom’s busier and more touristy destinations.

Kampot is located roughly 3 hours from Phnom Penh by road on the way to the southern coast. It’s easy to reach by minivan, bus or taxi. The company Giant Ibis runs daily vans and has a good track record for road safety.

A river city that’s known for holding onto its heritage character (a world apart from nearby Sihanoukville), Kampot is centred around the Praek Tuek Chhu river. The streets are filled with beautiful French-colonial architecture and crumbling shophouses. Some of Cambodia’s finest cafes and restaurants are located here, many of which use local Kampot salt and pepper to flavour their meals.

Hire a bike and cycle around the salt pans, ride out to a pepper farm for a tour or cooking class, or take a kayak out on the water to paddle through ‘the green cathedral’, a beautiful river loop shaded by palms. Take a day trip to Kep to swim in the ocean, riding to and from Kampot on the Crab Shuttle fishing boat. Evening drinks on the waterfront are a must; the old Fish Market is a great spot to watch the sunset.

Where to stay in Kampot Hotel Old Cinema

Hotel Old Cinema offers boutique rooms set inside a restored movie house, with an onsite bar and an open-air pool where the main stage used to be. Excellent location near the Kampot night market.

Danum Valley, Malaysia

tour companies southeast asia

Recommended by Margarita of The Wildlife Diaries One of the most tranquil places to relax and unwind in SE Asia is Borneo’s Danum Valley Conservation Area. This lush tropical valley is home to some of the oldest pristine rainforests on earth. There is no record of human habitation in  Danum Valley  before its protection, which means that its forest has never been logged and its animals have not been hunted.

There are only two accommodation options in the valley: the Danum Valley Field Centre and the upmarket Borneo Rainforest Lodge. The field centre is perched on the bank of Segama River, surrounded by the ancient rainforest shrouded in mist. There is something so primaeval about this forest that you half expect a dinosaur to appear out of the mist.

The main attraction of Danum Valley, apart from its unique rainforest, is the incredible abundance of wildlife. Borneo orangutans, pygmy elephants, gibbons, colugos, marbled cats, and clouded leopards inhabit the valley, not to mention the 270 bird species and a variety of reptiles. The two suspension bridges over Segama River and the Field Centre restaurant are great spots for watching birds first thing in the morning.

Most wildlife watching activities, however, happen at night. The park rangers offer night drives for those staying at the Field Centre and Borneo Rainforest Lodge runs its own spotlighting drives. Expect to see a few species of civets, flying squirrels, mouse deer, slow lorises and leopard cats on any given night. If you are lucky, you might spot some of the rarer creatures.

Experience the Danum Valley

The best and easiest way to visit the Danum Valley is on an organized tour from Lahad Datu. This 3-day package to the Danum Valley includes a stay at the luxurious Borneo Rainforest Lodge.

Kanchanaburi, Thailand

Erawan Falls near Kanchanaburi, Thailand

Kanchanaburi is only two hours by bus outside Bangkok, yet it could be on another planet. Sitting on the Kwai River banks, Kanchanaburi is just the place to go if you need a break from the hectic traffic and noise of the capital.

Once you leave Bangkok, it gets greener and greener the closer you get to Kanchanaburi. Kanchanaburi, also the name of the province, is considered the lushest in all of Thailand.

In Kanchanaburi, get on with the relaxation and book yourself into one of the fantastic floating hotels. Soon your state of mind will sync with the flow of the river, and all your worries will be forgotten.

History fanatics will want to go and see the infamous Bridge Over the River Kwai and pay their respects at the sombre WWII Commonwealth cemeteries. A little farther out, towards the Myanmar border, you can also visit the Hellfire Pass and walking trail.

A beautiful scooter ride through the verdant landscape will take you to the Erawan Falls National Park. Along the way, you can stop at roadside stalls selling ice coffee and delicious snacks. These waterfalls and cascades are not only highly photogenic, but you can also swim in the pools, so bring your trunks with you.

At sunset, get something cold to drink at one of the many riverside bars and cafes.

Where to stay in Kanchanaburi The Float House River Kwai

All rooms and villas at the Float House River Kwai come with your own wooden deck right on the river. Surrounded by jungle and floating on the river, you’ll love this place if you want to get away from it all.

Hpa’an, Myanmar

A river scene in rural Myanmar near Hpa An

Recommended by Maartje & Sebastiaan of The Orange Backpack One of the best places in Asia to escape the big crowds and unwind for a few days might be  Hpa-An in Myanmar . This small town in the southeast of Myanmar is not the most charming or spectacular one, but it’s the stunning countryside surroundings that make Hpa-An a great stop on any Myanmar itinerary.

The town itself doesn’t have much to offer. The big attraction of Hpa-An is its surroundings. The village is located in the countryside filled with mountains, pagodas, rivers and caves. The best way to explore the area is by renting a motorbike and driving yourself to all the attractions in the area.

Mount Zwekabin is one of the highlights closest to Hpa-An. At the foot of the mountain is Lumani Park with its 1000 buddha statues, an impressive sight. You can climb all the way up to the top for an impressive overview of the Hpa-An countryside.

The other highlights are the temple caves in the area. The Mahar Sadan is the most-visited and biggest one. You can walk all the way through the cave, finishing at the waterside where boats are waiting for you. You could walk the same way back or pay one of the boatmen to bring you back to the entrance.

Another nearby attraction is the Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda. The temple itself isn’t that impressive, but you’ll visit this stunning sight for its small pagoda, balancing on the top of a rock. You can go all the way up.

Where to stay in Hpa’an Soe Brothers

Cheap and cheerful, Soe Brothers has a great location close to the night market and Shwe Yin Mhyaw Pagoda. Bike rental is available to explore the surrounding countryside. Helpful staff who go out of their way to make guests feel at home.

Phu Quoc, Vietnam

Green Bay Resort pool in Phu Quoc, Vietnam

Recommended by Jenny of TraveLynn Family When your day starts with a floating breakfast in a private infinity pool, and your only appointment that day is with the spa, you know you’re on to a good thing.

Surrounded by azure waters with lush hills and rustic villages, Phu Quoc is the perfect place to visit towards the end of a  South Vietnam itinerary , to totally unwind and lose track of the days. Distance-wise, it’s actually closer to Cambodia, but this relatively little island in the Gulf of Thailand is actually part of Vietnam.

If you can tear yourself away from the hammock, you can ride the cable cars at Bai Truong, browse the souvenirs and food market of Duong Dong Market, hire a kayak, or visit the traditional Ham Ninh Fishing Village. But really, your biggest decision each day will be whether you should lounge by the pool or head to the beach. This is not the place to come to party the night away, so stock up on some books, and settle into island time.

To get to Phu Quoc, there are direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Alternatively, there are regular ferries throughout the day from Hà Tiên and Rạch Giá on the mainland. Many accommodations on the island offer complimentary pick up from the ferry terminal or airport.

Where to stay in Phu Quoc Green Bay Resort

Pristine and secluded accommodation incorporating natural and sustainably sourced materials. Green Bay Resort features all of the modern amenities that guests would expect from a superlative boutique holiday experience. Relax at the serene spa or the infinity pool bar overlooking the beach.

Cameron Highlands, Malaysia

The tea fields of the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia is one of the most relaxing places to visit in Southeast Asia

Recommended by Caroline of CK Travel The Cameron Highlands is a gorgeous part of Malaysia with breathtaking scenery, lush greenery, rolling hills and Tudor-styled buildings. It is a perfect destination for a relaxing holiday as the region is situated at a higher altitude than the rest of mainland Malaysia so it has a cooler climate with crisp fresh air.

The Cameron Highlands is the tea-producing capital of the country and you can visit tea plantations in the area to enjoy a cuppa with stunning panoramic views of the tea fields or take a tour around the factory. The Cameron Highlands is also the centre of strawberry production in Malaysia. There are several strawberry farms around town where you can pick your own fruit and sample produce such as strawberry jam, strawberry ice cream and strawberry juice.

Other fun  things to do in the Cameron Highlands  include visiting the Jim Thompson Tea Room inside the Cameron Highlands Resort for their English Afternoon Tea, which is served with fresh local strawberries. You can also visit the award-winning Spa Village located inside the hotel where they use honey, strawberries, tea and roses for their relaxing treatments and therapies.

If you feel like doing something a bit more active then you can enjoy a scenic walk in the region. There are 14 different colour-coded hiking trails of varying difficulty that take you past waterfalls and offer incredible panoramic views of the tea plantations and the Titiwangsa Mountains.

Where to stay in the Cameron Highlands Smokehouse Hotel

The Smokehouse features English cottage-style accommodations with views of its award-winning gardens or the golf course. It has a restaurant and bar. Traditional English breakfast is served in the conservatory, while afternoon tea and scones are served on the garden terrace

Mui Ne, Vietnam

Fairy stream with red dunes in the background in Mui Ne, Southern Vietnam

Beautiful Mui Ne in southern Vietnam is not only one of the most relaxing destinations in Southeast Asia, but also one of the most beautiful. Mui Ne charms visitors with its laid-back fishing village vibes, unreal scenery, fantastic seafood and exciting activities.

In recent years, Mui Ne has emerged as one of the best kitesurfing destinations in Southeast Asia. The best time to ride the wind and waves is from the end of October until late March (perfect for those looking to escape winter in the northern hemisphere).

But Mui Ne is more than just a kitesurfing destination. Chillaholics can choose from massages right on the beach, watching the sunset from the red or white dunes or simply bobbing around in the pool.

Photographers and their cameras alike will love the fish market. Come here first thing in the morning when the boats are coming in and the light is nice and soft. Another beautiful place to see is the Fairy Stream. This shallow stream flows through a small red canyon, and a walk in this stream is straight out of a fairy tale. The bright red and unreal formations on one side of the stream, and the lush greenery on the opposite side is quite surreal.

Taking a Vietnamese cooking class while you’re in Mui Ne might just be the best (and most meaningful) souvenir that you can take back home with you.

Where to stay in Mui Ne Sailing Club Resort Mui Ne

Hands down the best place for a relaxing stay in Mui Ne, the Sailing Club Resort is set on a private beach, you can enjoy the sea view from the pool, bar and restaurant. All rooms are en-suite with individually controlled air conditioning, cable television and a balcony. Full-service day spa and kite surfing school.

Halong Bay, Vietnam

Boats cruising through karst landscapes in Halong Bay, Vietnam

Recommended by Neha of Travel Melodies Halong Bay is one of the most beautiful places in Southeast Asia. Located in Northeast Vietnam, it is a four-hour drive from  Hanoi . Many tour operators have all-inclusive packages with transfers from Hanoi as well.

With over 1600 limestone islands standing tall in emerald green waters, it is a perfect place to relax and just be with nature. The islands are covered with thick forests adding to the charm.

Halong Bay is mainly explored onboard Junk boat cruises. You can choose between one day or multi-day cruises depending on the time and level of relaxation required. The cruise takes you along the bay through the islands while offering many activities to enjoy.

You get a chance to kayak through the limestone karsts admiring the natural wonders. There are many caves filled with stalactites and stalagmites in the Halong Bay area, and you get to tour one of them.

While cruising, you could also try your hand at preparing Vietnamese dishes at the cooking classes on offer. Besides cooking, this is the best opportunity to indulge in a wide variety of seafood. If you are a vegetarian, do let the cruise know when booking.

HALONG BAY CRUISES

Experience Halong Bay aboard a cruise ship and admire the spectacular scenery. Choose between a 1-day cruise or a relaxing 3-day cruise . Includes pickup from your hotel in Hanoi.

Thakhek Loop, Laos

A road along the Thakhek Loop in Laos

Recommended by Ben of The Sabbatical Guide The Thakhek Loop  is a 480km loop in Laos, where travellers traditionally hire a motorbike and complete this incredible journey in three to five days. Starting from the small town of Thakhek, this adventure takes in huge caves, dusty red roads, massive limestone karsts and an endless selection of rivers, waterfalls and springs.

So with all this driving why is it on a list of ‘Best Places to Relax in Southeast Asia’?

Firstly, it is the cold and hot springs that are available to visit on the route. Unwinding in the natural turquoise waters, surrounded by lush green forest will wash away any aches and pains you’ve built up on your trip.

Secondly, it’s one of the best places to stay in Southeast Asia – SpringRiver Resort . Built at the junction of a spring and river (makes sense right!) this is one of the closest places to heaven you’ll find in Laos. There are 16 wooden bungalows, connected by bamboo boardwalks and a small restaurant overlooking the river.

Whether you decide to borrow a canoe and paddle to the source of the spring, wander off into the mountains to see the local area or simply lie back and enjoy the breeze blowing through your private chalet, there is simply nowhere more relaxing in the country.

Railay Beach, Thailand

People swimming at Railay Beach during sunset

Recommended by Mariza from Hop On World If you’re looking for one of the most relaxing places to visit in South East Asia, you couldn’t find a better place than Railay Beach even if you tried!

Railay Beach  is a gorgeous bay located in Thailand’s Krabi Province. It is renowned for its epic sunsets, towering limestone cliffs, and postcard-perfect beaches, making it the perfect place to unwind.

While Railay Beach isn’t an island, it’s easy to be fooled by its paradise-like setting. Part of Railay’s charm lies in the fact that it is entirely cut off from land travel. And the only way to get there is by long-tail boat.

The bay consists of two parts, Railay West and Railay East. While both are equally beautiful and unique in their own right, the western region, especially the areas near Phra Nang Beach, can get pretty crowded with day-trippers coming to soak up the chilled vibes, catch the sunset or try out rock climbing.

Railay East, on the other hand, is much more laidback. Here you’ll find a secluded stretch of sand where you’re likely to have the entire beach all to yourself, or at the very least share it with one or two Asian Water Monitors. Of course, there are loads of fantastic eateries where you can sip on a freshly cracked coconut or gobble up some pad thai too. However, you’ll be doing yourself an injustice if you didn’t spend some time at Tew Lay Bar – a funky beachfront bar where you can kick back with a boozy cocktail.

If you can tear yourself away from the beach bum lifestyle, there are loads to do in Railay Beach too. Kayak around the bay, explore the stunning islands nearby, scramble up to the Railay Viewpoint, and even swim in a secret lagoon!

Where to stay in Railay Beach Railay Great View Resort

Giving you a true sense of traditional Thai living with its Thai architecture and wooden-style cottages, Railay Great View Resort is nestled in a tropical green landscape and is a short walk from the private beach.

Ngapali, Myanmar

Ngapali beach in Myanmar is one of the best places to visit in Southeast Asia for a relaxing vacation

Recommended by Samantha of The Wandering Wanderluster Known for its complex history, culture and plethora of golden pagodas, Myanmar may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of somewhere relaxing. Most visitors who come to Myanmar often cram in as much sightseeing into their fast-paced itinerary as possible, leaving very little room for pure relaxation.

But away from the main cities along its long stretch of coastline are some of the most beautiful white-sand beaches in South East Asia. One of them is  Ngapali , one of the country’s most well-known beach resorts.

While there are bus services that run to Ngapali from Yangon, you can also take short regional flights to Thandwe Airport and from there, most of the resorts are just a short drive away. Almost all the top places to stay are located directly on the long stretch of white sandy beach. There is a diverse range of accommodation options from luxury 5-star hotels to budget eco-lodges.

There is little to do in Ngapali, other than enjoy its beautiful picture-perfect beach, enjoy some local cuisine, and take strolls into the small nearby fishing towns for a glimpse into local life. Rise early in the morning and you can watch the local fishermen bringing in their catch which they sell to local restaurants.

You can also find locals who offer boat trips to some reasonable snorkelling spots or hire an e-bike and explore some nearby pagodas. Or head to the Tilawkasayambhu Buddha Statue above the town where you can enjoy a wonderful vista over the beach and town below, especially beautiful at sunset.

Where to stay in Ngapali Sandoway Resort

Nestled among coconut palms and facing Ngapali Beach, the luxurious  Sandoway Resort  provides spacious villas and cottages scattered throughout six acres of long beach.

Ranong, Thailand

A PornRang hot spring in Ranong, Thailand

Recommended by Iris of Mind of a Hitchhiker One underrated Thai city that still has all the joys and comforts of big city life is Ranong. Next to Myanmar’s southernmost point Kawthaung, Ranong has recently grown in popularity due to its ease of visa runs. Otherwise, it has yet to see the crowds of Phuket 300 kilometres south or Bangkok 580 kilometres northeast.

The hot springs near Ranong are a popular and relaxing place to unwind. Renting a scooter to drive from Ranong to the hot springs is not a daunting task, but taking a taxi also won’t break the bank. Make sure to visit the PornRang hot spring to the south and the Raksa Warin hot spring east of Ranong for a long soak. The rules are similar to a Japanese onsen, so it’s great to unwind in a clean environment. They even prepare onsen eggs in the hot waters.

A little further out is the Namtok Ngao National Park with its waterfalls and the Mu Ko Ranong National Park with its mangroves. Inland is also the Ranong Canyon where there’s a small lake with lots of fish.

In Ranong itself, there’s the weekly Walking Street each Saturday with live performances. At this night market, local small businesses serve ice cream-filled coconuts, fresh juice, and interesting snacks for as little as 10 Baht. If this is still too much activity for you, take a ferry to Ko Chang or Ko Phayam from Ranong to escape it all.

Where to stay in Ranong The Hidden Resort

Eight modern bungalows set in a tropical garden with a swimming pool, The Hidden Resort is the perfect place to relax while in Ranong. With its convenient location, the hotel offers easy access to the city’s must-see destinations.

Bukit Lawang, Indonesia

Orangutan trek in Sumatra, Indonesia

A few days in the pristine rainforest of Sumatra is just what you need if you really want to get away from it all and connect with nature. The small town of Bukit Lawang, sitting on the edge of the Gunung Leuser National Park is straight out of the Jungle Book.

The small town sits on the banks of the Bohorok river, and directly across the river is the dense forest of the national park.

Bukit Lawang is one of our favourite destinations in Indonesia for the way that low-impact tourism benefits the environment and local community. The highlight of any visit to Sumatra is getting a local guide to take you into the forest in search of orangutans.

Not only will you see the orange man of the forest , but also other species of monkeys, insects and other jungle critters. An orangutan trek is usually followed by an exciting inner-tube float back to town on the rapids of the Bohorok river.

The sounds of the forest at night, the intense thunderstorms, the constant rumble of the river, the fresh fruit and the cool water of the river beaches must hold ancient magic. After a few days in Bukit Lawang, you’ll be as mellow as the orangutans in the jungle across.

Where to stay in Bukit Lawang Garden Inn

The top choice to stay in Bukit Lawang, Garden Inn sits right on the river with unobstructed views of the forest and Gunung Leuser National Park.

Feels like you’re sleeping IN the forest, but in comfort. Monkeys are guaranteed to come to say hello while you’re relaxing in your hammock on the balcony. Excellent restaurant too (must try the coconut shake and fried bananas)

Bolaven Plateau, Laos

Bolaven Plateau in Laos

Recommended by Sarah from ASocialNomad There’s something to the slower pace of life on the Bolaven Plateau in Laos. It’s here that you’ll find the cooler temperatures of a slightly higher altitude and a whole lot of waterfalls. This area is Lao’s primary coffee-growing region and positively teems with villages filled with locals, fresh food and a relaxed pace of life.

The Bolaven Plateau is about 85 kilometres south of Pakse and is at an altitude of between 1,000 and 1350 metres above sea level. The roads here are good but quiet, so it’s a great place to visit independently and on a motorbike without the stress of much traffic.  There are organic farms here, small villages and some glorious waterfalls. Mostly, though there’s time to relax and take everything slowly. Be sure to check out local coffee, stop at several waterfalls and enjoy the quiet up here. For those who have a specific interest in coffee, there are coffee farms to visit, and even a Coffee Farm Resort at Sinouk.

Tad Lo is one of the small villages near the waterfall of the same name. It’s a delightful spot to chill out and relax for a  few days on the Bolaven Plateau .  You’ll find chilled out places to stay, have a cold Beer Laos and a refreshing swim in the rivers here.

Where to stay in the Bolaven Plateau Fandee Guest house

Great location near the waterfalls. Fandee Guesthouse has clean and comfortable rooms, offering a relaxing stay while touring the Pakse Loop. Friendly staff and good food.

El Nido, Philippines

Island hopping in El Nido, Philippines

Recommended by Dea from How She Wanders Palawan won’t be recognized as the world’s best island multiple times for no reason. With its stunning landscapes and pristine beaches and islands, it’s not hard to figure out why. At the northern tip of Palawan is the carefree town of El Nido, which is the gateway to Palawan’s star attraction — the beautiful Bacuit Archipelago.

El Nido is a place where you can experience pure relaxation and leisure. Just the sight of the vast ocean dotted with islands and limestone rock formations in the Bacuit Archipelago is already a respite in itself. For the easy-going who like sunbathing, watching sunsets, or just lazing on the beach, there’s the charming  Nacpan Beach  and Duli Beach further up north.

And if you’re up for both adventure and relaxation, you must go island hopping in El Nido. There are four major island hopping tours on offer in the area. Expect amazing tranquil beaches, lagoons, sandbars, towering limestone formations, and crystalline water in 50 shades of blue.

Active visitors can go kayaking in Small and Big Lagoon, go snorkelling at Shimizu Island, climb Matinloc Shrine and Taraw Cliff, and traverse the Snake Island’s long sandbar while island hopping.

You will never run out of relaxing sights and activities in El Nido. To really appreciate the unique tranquillity and beauty of the area, put aside at least five days.

Koh Chang, Thailand

Koh Chang Beach Spa and massage

Recommended by Matt from No Hassle Travel For a relaxing, chilled-out spot with fewer crowds, the island of Koh Chang , Thailand, is worth a visit. Compared to other popular Thai islands, Koh Chang is low on the tourist radar and so offers a quiet getaway to escape the travelling hordes.

This attractive tropical island is sparsely populated, with only a handful of small towns scattered along the coastline. The island’s main town White Sands is relatively small, but this is as big as it gets by Koh Chang standards.

Koh Chang is unquestionably the place for beach addicts. Not only is there plenty of them, but they are also clean and quiet, with soft fine sand and clear blue water that’s perfect for swimming. Ideal for lying on the sand all day and simply doing nothing.

What’s more, is that Koh Chang also offers some spectacular sunset spots. Bars on the beach will set up tables and chairs on the sand during the evenings, offering guests front-row seats for a quiet night watching the sunset while enjoying a beer.

For a place to stay, the Nature Beach Resort offers a chilled-out vibe all day and night. The resort leads directly onto the beach, and the sunset can be watched from the pool. The resort has tasty food, friendly staff, and great music all day long. This place ticks all the boxes for a relaxing holiday by the sea.

For those who enjoy a quiet spot to unwind with lots of beach time, you simply can’t go wrong on this beautiful Thai island.

Nusa Lembongan, Indonesia

Boats on a beach in Nusa Lembongan

Recommended by Jess from Tourists to Travellers If you picture pristine white sand beaches, cliffs with panoramic views, and beach huts surrounded by lush greenery around, then you have arrived at Nusa Lembongan.

This island paradise is a short 30-minute boat ride from Sanur on mainland Bali and forms a part of the stunning Nusa Islands. While mainland Bali is getting busier, Nusa Lembongan remains one of the best places to visit in Southeast Asia for a relaxing holiday.

Though the island is small, there are ample things to do. You could go and laze on Dream Beach with its white sand beach and deep blue water. This dreamy beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island.

Mushroom beach is also worth a visit. Sit back and enjoy a drink or grab a bite to eat in one of the restaurants overlooking the beach.

Photographers will love the Devil’s Tear: It’s a breathtaking site where a rugged cliff overlooks the blue water below. At high tide, it’s a spectacular sight to see the waves smashing into the cliff.

If you’re looking for something more active, you could go kayaking or snorkelling with manta rays. The best snorkelling spots on Nusa Lembongan are Mangrove point, Crystal Bay and The wall.

Where to stay in Nusa Lembongan Bay Shore Huts

Bay Shore Huts has modern wooden huts located on Tamarind Beach and offers amazing sea views, tropical gardens and a swimming pool. Accommodations come with open-air showers. Perfect place for couples.

Donsol, Philippines

A whale shark in Donsol, Philippines

Recommended by Campbell & Alya from Stingy Nomads The small coastal village of Donsol in the south of Luzon island in the Philippines is the perfect place to relax in this beautiful island country.

The rural village with thatch roof huts and colourful local fishing boats still lining the beach became a popular tourist destination due to hundreds of massive whale sharks congregating here in season. The amazing experience of swimming with whale sharks in Donsol and Oslob draws many tourists to the Philippines.

Swimming with the giant whale sharks in Donsol is an eco-friendly activity, and precautions are in place to have minimal impact on these amazing animals. Searching for the whale sharks by boat and then swimming with them is an unreal experience.

At night you could go look for fireflies from a rowboat on the Ogod River and is a very romantic trip outside Donsol. Getting to the river by tricycle from town is already an adventure. During the hour rowing down the river with a guide, you will see hundreds of fireflies glowing in the trees next to the river. You can rent a kayak and row down the river during the day on your own.

Mayon Volcano a couple of kilometres from Donsol is known as “the world’s most perfect volcanic cone” and can be explored while hiking and camping in the Mayon Volcano National Park.

Where to stay in Donsol Elysia Beach Resort

Popular with those coming to snorkel with whale sharks and diving with manta rays, beachfront Elysia Beach Resort offers air-conditioned rooms and a lovely pool.

Inle Lake, Myanmar

tour companies southeast asia

Recommended by Catalin from Travel Trained Myanmar is a spectacular country that only opened its borders for mainstream tourism not long ago. There are many breathtaking places to visit in Myanmar, but you will be amazed after a visit to Inle Lake.

Most tourists arrive at Inle Lake by taking an overnight bus from Yangon, trekking from Kalaw or taking a bus from Mandalay or Bagan. Much more relaxing and comfortable is getting a flight to Heho airport, about 45 minutes away.

Inle Lake is one of the most beautiful places in Southeast Asia, and it’s a perfect getaway for those who want to take a break from busy cities like Yangon or Mandalay. Like elsewhere in Myanmar, Inle Lake offers exceptional value for money.

The town of Nyaungshwe is the best base for visiting the lake, and there are a few cultural and relaxing activities to experience during your stay.

Among the best things to do in Nyaungshwe is to visit the cultural attractions of the lake. A daylong trip by long-tail tail boat will take you to the wooden monasteries, pagodas floating villages and markets, small factories where you can see silk weaving or the making of Burmese cigars and eateries where you can try local food.

If feeling adventurous, go explore the Htat Eian Caves, or sign up for a Shan cooking class.

For something unique, head out to Red Mountain Winery and discover Lake Inle’s surprisingly quaffable wines.

kids on vacations

Travels to Southeast Asia with kids can be a surprisingly wonderful and rewarding experience for many reasons; any challenges that do arise, from energy-sapping heat to lack of child seats and cots, are far outweighed by the smiles and priceless memories of shared adventures in exotic lands that last a lifetime.

In our highlight countries, there are no Disneylands or Disney Worlds; instead, the beautiful great outdoors and a geographically stunning region blessed with diverse natural attractions, providing one giant playground for fascinating activities and experiences the whole family can enjoy. And with all the weird and wonderful wildlife on both land and sea, why bother with zoos and aquariums, when you can see orangutans and multi-colored tropical fishes in their natural habitat.

You’ll find locals across Southeast Asia are naturally friendly and children are the focus of life and well-loved; kids are generally warmly welcomed here. Traveling through Southeast Asia, kids will be wide-eyed , excited, and culturally engaged, this is truly a hands-on educational experience, so switch off the iPad!

If you need extra help, surprisingly affordable international five-star hotels are a boon for family-friendly services and facilities and kids’ clubs with a range of fun activities. Here’s our selection of the best family destinations in Southeast Asia.

1. Phuket, Thailand

Thailand is by far Southeast Asia’s most child-friendly destination in Southeast Asia and the most popular beach destination, with some of Asia’s most stunning beaches. The best are found in the south, with masses of beaches and islands to choose from, but the most popular destination is Phuket, Thailand’s largest and busiest island.

Phuket Island is also extremely family-friendly, whatever the weather and there’s plenty to do, natural and man-made to keep everyone entertained while relaxing on holiday. Phuket Island boasts more than 30-plus glorious beaches, but not all are suitable for children and family holidays; those that are, include Bangtao, Kamala, Karon, Kata, and Patong.

Many have large beachfront resorts offering diverse water sports and children’s activities and kids’ clubs, while some major resorts, such as JW Marriott Phuket, boast their own private beaches. From Phuket, there are abundant day cruises available to outer islands such as the Phi Phi archipelago, for yet more swims and snorkeling. Or cycle into the scenic rainforest interiors with Phuket Countryside Bike Tours, or picnic at one of Phuket’s waterfalls.

Otherwise, plenty of amusements cover Rawai Park and Splash Jungle Water Park, Patong Go-Kart speedway, or Surf House Phuket.

2. Hoi An, Vietnam

Everyone loves visiting Hoi An , especially families! This 16th century Silk Road trading port today ranks as one of Southeast Asia’s oldest, most alluring towns and one of Vietnam’s favorite destinations for umpteen reasons. Hoi An’s beautifully preserved Ancient Town and World Heritage Site is a compact pedestrianized area covering a few narrow streets alongside picturesque Thu Bon River, crammed with centuries-old Chinese pagodas and shophouses, cultural treasures, and quaint French colonial-era buildings housing cafés and craft shops that are all easily walkable.

The waterfront fish market here is especially interesting for children, as are the slew of Vietnamese cooking classes and artisan workshops where you can learn how to make traditional crafts, including lanterns. There are also great value, riverfront restaurants, where you can watch the chug past from shaded balconies.

Don’t miss the monthly, full moon lantern festival: kids will marvel at the hundreds of multi-colored lanterns illuminating the Ancient Town, the traditional games, and impromptu performances out on the streets. Beyond, cycle out to scenic rice fields and farming lands (you may get to ride a water buffalo) and the pretty town beach. Or hire a small fishing boat along the river at sunset; captains invariably let children helm the boat for a while!

3. Siem Reap, Cambodia

In northwest Cambodia, Siem Reap town is the gateway to World Heritage Site, Angkor Archaeological Park, containing an ancient Khmer civilization’s stupendous remains; not only 12th century Angkor Wat temple complex, one of the world’s great ancient wonders, but also hundreds of other majestic temples and monuments. Little ones should enjoy the Indiana Jones-inspired adventure and living history lesson, exploring all the crumbling ruins and moats, especially on memorable family bicycle tours through the Park’s jungle trails, stopping off at leisure at favorite spots.

Siem Reap itself is a lively stand-out destination, increasingly popular with families for the wide choice of interesting activities and things to do . Learn how to make Cambodian pottery at Khmer Ceramic Fine Arts Centre, visit the Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre or head to the circus, namely, Phare, The Cambodian Circus, a Khmer-style Cirque du Soleil, where performers use theatre, music, dance, and daring modern circus acts to convey historical and modern Cambodian stories in a new way. Instructed by experienced guides, Kids can also soar through the dense jungle within the Angkor Archaeological Park on a zip-line besides getting to learn about the rainforest environment and the park history and see some free-roaming cheeky gibbons.

4. Kratie, Cambodia

A day’s drive from Siem Reap, in Cambodia’s central interiors, the mellow riverside town of Kratie is a popular base for sightings of the rare Irrawaddy dolphins, which inhabit this area of the Mekong River, albeit in ever-dwindling numbers. All children love to see dolphins in the wild and they get an amazing opportunity while on a guided boat tour around Kampi, several miles north of Kratie. Taken to the Mekong’s best vantage points, the family should spot these elusive freshwater dolphins, along with rare birds and local fishermen casting their nets.

Besides dolphins, the tranquil and unspoiled countryside of emerald rice paddies and traditional Khmer stilt houses surrounding Kratie is ideal for family bike rides and picnics. Or take the ferry boat to Koh Trong, an island set amidst the Mekong River opposite Kratie; without cars or typical modern facilities, villagers live a simple rural life in palm-shaded villages. Even charming Kratie is lovely to explore, a former French colonial port with an expansive riverfront and broad promenade that is perfect for evening strolls.

5. Kuta-Legian, Bali, Indonesia

Two traditional coastal villages merged together along with Bali’s southwest coast urban sprawl, Kuta and Legian are one of Bali’s most popular destinations, especially fun for kids. Bali is a world-renowned surfers mecca, but one of the best places to learn is on the beaches of Kuta and Legian, for their well-defined surf waves and sandy-bottomed shallow waters.

6. Sanur, Bali, Indonesia

Over on Bali’s east coast, the charming seaside suburb of Sanur, sets a more relaxed and tranquil tone than its frenetic counterparts, Kuta-Legian. That and its fabulous beach – one of Bali’s longest and prettiest – are some reasons why Sanur has been a popular family destination for decades.

The extensive stretch of golden sands is lined the entire way with a shaded wooden promenade, along with beachfront low-key resorts and restaurants – perfect for an early morning or late afternoon stroll with the family. Sanur’s beach also boasts sandy-bottomed, shallow calm waters, ideal for safe swimming, snorkeling to the outlying coral reefs, and the multitude of family water sports available. Activities extend to kite flying (Sanur hosts a major kite festival between July and August) and Bali Seawalker, exploring the bottom of the Indian Ocean and immersed in tropical fish using a specially designed, underwater helmet.

Sanur also makes a great base for day cruises to a trio of lesser-known, neighboring islands, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan, boasting some of Bali’s most dazzling white sand beaches and clear azure waters brimming with fantastic marine life, including dolphins. You’re also not far from Bali’s quintessential rice field countryside and two top family attractions, Kemenuh Butterfly Park (www.facebook.com/kemenuhbutterflypark.id/) and Bali Safari Park, the latter, where over 100 animal species, including Komodo Dragons and orangutans, roam free in large enclosures that mimic their natural habitats – visited on fun safari trams.

7. Luang Prabang, Laos

The enchanting riverside town and former royal capital, Luang Prabang, is one of Southeast Asia’s most alluring and popular destinations, highly appealing to both children and families, keeping everyone happy and entertained for days. When traveling to Laos with family , you’ll make some great memories in Luang Prabang!

The whole family can enjoy some of the ancient town’s main attractions: climbing up Mount Phousi – easy for kids – for sunrise or sunset fantastic views across towny, or the lively night markets on a pedestrianized street, with piles of colorful textiles and handicrafts hand-made by local ethnic communities. Or jumping on a longtail boat up the Mekong River for magical Pak Ou Caves, an elevated river cave temple crammed with thousands of centuries-old Buddha images.

Other distractions cover cooking classes (when parents can sneak away for a Laotian-style spa treatment) or cycle rides through the countryside to the three-tiered Kwang Si Falls – the largest waterfalls in the region – engulfed in tropical rainforest and cascading into shallow turquoise pools, perfect for a refreshing dip. If you visit nearby Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre, kids can get up close to adorable rescued bears, now free to play in a safe and natural environment, while Green Jungle Park provides safe, jungle-based activities for all ages, including zip-lining adventures, a rope course, and trekking.

8. Vang Vieng, Laos

Vang Vieng lies mid-way between Vientiane and Luang Prabang on the banks of Nam Song River, but its surrounding rural scenery of ethereal limestone mountains and caves, rice paddies, and lagoons has made this unassuming town the top adventure destination in Laos. Here, tour agencies offer diverse adventures and extreme sports suitable for families, especially with active kids and teenagers.

Families can spend a few exciting days here, burning off all that excess energy, with no temple visits needed! Highlight activities cover kayaking tours amidst mist-shrouded karsts, or a more relaxing option of boat tours at sunrise or sunset, mountain biking to explore caves and blue lagoons and hiking the verdant hills. Older kids will surely enjoy rock climbing with the reputable, Adam’s Climbing School.

Children under 12 can go on guided pony treks on trails through mountainous landscapes or along the riverbanks, with Ponies Of Vang Vieng.

For a fun breakfast, head to Organic Farm, sampling their famed Mulberry Pancakes by the riverside, then afterward, taking a farm tour to meet various farm animals.

floating houses in Inle lake in Myanmar

9. Inle Lake, Myanmar

Deep in Myanmar’s central highlands, beautiful Inle Lake is the nation’s second-largest freshwater lake and elevated at 2,900 feet, one of its highest. The main activity here, naturally, is boating: kids will love exploring this magical water world on a long-tail wooden boat and stopping off to visit some of the 200-plus ethnic villages built on stilts over the lake and their floating gardens. Some consider Inle Lake an absolute must when visiting Myanmar.

Gliding past the local Inthar fishermen, uniquely rowing their boats with one leg wrapped around an oar, is equally fascinating. Part of a Biosphere Reserve and Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary, the lake is home to heaps of exotic water birds, besides exceptional flora and fauna, which can also be explored on kayaks. Around the lake, there are opportunities for interactive ‘cooking classes’ within local homes and visits to artisan workshops, and seeing how traditional Burmese crafts are hand-made.

The Inthar Heritage Burmese Cat House is a big hit with kids: a cat sanctuary aiming to reintroduce the near-extinct Burmese cats back into Myanmar, where you can freely interact with these feline creatures. The captivating Cat House is just one component of Inle Heritage a not-for-profit organization striving to preserve Inle Lake’s nature and culture, funded by their quaint accommodations, restaurant with shaded verandas, craft shop, and ethnic Inthar cooking classes – l housed in a traditional Burmese timbered dwelling. Beyond, village homestays and cycling and hiking in the surrounding countryside are further engaging activities.

Meet Grab: Southeast Asia’s post-Uber “everything app”

G rab  ( GRAB ) , the Singapore-headquartered “Everyday Everything App,” is Southeast Asia’s answer to Uber, DoorDash, Instacart, and Venmo — all in a single platform.

Best known for its ride-hailing and delivery services, the Grab app also offers a wallet feature that allows users to make payments online and in person, send money to family and friends, finance purchases over time, and even buy travel insurance.

In essence, Grab is (attempting to become) the go-to digital toolkit for everyday life in the eight countries in which it operates — currently, that’s Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The app has been called Southeast Asia’s answer to Uber, and, as of late 2023, Grab reportedly serves 35 million unique users each month according to the Business Times .

Trading publicly in the United States on the Nasdaq exchange since its 2021 IPO , the company turned a profit for the first time during the fourth quarter of 2023 and shows no signs of slowing down.

Here’s what you need to know about Grab's features, its stock, and its ongoing quest to become Southeast Asia’s “one app to rule them all.”

Related: Surge pricing: Examples & how it works on Uber, Lyft, DoorDash & more

How did Grab become the Uber of Southeast Asia? A short history of the app

Grab was born in 2012 at Harvard Business School, the brainchild of Anthony Tan (CEO) and Tan Hooi Ling (COO), both Malaysian nationals who earned their MBAs there the year prior. The pair launched their mobile app — then called “My Teksi” — using a $25,000 grant from the school along with an unknown amount of personal capital.

The purpose of the app was to connect taxi drivers with passengers via their smartphones in order to create a simple and orderly alternative to Malaysia’s then-chaotic (and sometimes unsafe, especially for female riders) ride-hailing environment.

In 2013, the company — by then called GrabTaxi — expanded, making its digital ride-hailing app available in the Philippines that summer, then in Singapore and Thailand before the year’s end. The next year, the company rolled out a fleet of 100 electric taxis in Singapore, expanded operations to major cities in Vietnam and Indonesia, and launched GrabBike, a ride-hailing service for motorbike rides.

In 2015, the company launched GrabExpress as a package courier service. The following year, it rebranded (shortening its name to Grab and updating its logo) and introduced in-app messaging and translation for drivers and riders. It also created the GrabRewards program, through which users can earn points redeemable toward discounts on subsequent Grab services.

In 2017, the company launched GrabPay, its first financial technology offering, after acquiring an Indonesian payment company called Kudo. Next, it acquired Uber’s Southeast Asian assets and operations in early 2018, cementing Grab’s status as the dominant ride-hailing service in the region.

As a result of this acquisition, which included Uber Eats, Grab added food-delivery services to its suite of offerings, first in Singapore and Malaysia, and then in the remainder of its market before the year’s end.

Related: The 5 most startling Chapter 11 retailer bankruptcies since 2020

As part of this deal, Uber received a 27.5% stake in Grab, and Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi joined the company’s board. So, the American-based ride-hailing and delivery giant now has a vested interest in seeing Grab succeed in its own market. Also as part of this 2018 acquisition, Grab agreed to go public by March 2023 , a promise it kept with a little over a year to spare.

Business Insider reported the same year that Grab had become Southeast Asia’s first “decacorn” after securing more funding than any other tech startup in the region during the three years prior. (Unicorns are privately held companies worth more than $1 billion, while “decacorns” are privately held companies worth over $10 million.)

The company continued to make acquisitions in the fintech space, gradually expanding its in-app financial offerings to include money transfers, payments to merchants, microloans, insurance services for drivers and passengers, and buy-now-pay-later programs.

By the time it went public on the U.S. stock market via a SPAC merger with Altimeter Growth Corp., the company had built a vast network of partnerships that allowed customers to hail car and motorbike rides, book travel, order food, pay for goods and services, send and receive money, and even obtain travel insurance policies.

In December 2021, Grab shares opened at $13.06 during the company’s first day trading on the Nasdaq, but they tumbled to around half that by the end of the day. Shares continued to fall, and for the next two years, they bobbed up and down in the $2.80 to $3.80 range.

In the fourth quarter of 2023, however, Grab moved into the black for the first time, posting a profit of $11 million on revenue of $653 million, up 30% from the 2022 fourth quarter.

So, what’s next for the Uber-backed “everything app?”

Is Grab stock a buy?

The market has known since late February 2024 that Grab became profitable during 2023’s final quarter and that it was initiating its first-ever share repurchase program (both of these are usually positives for a stock). That news, however, didn’t seem to do much to bolster the company’s stock price, which sat at around $3.16 then and hadn’t moved much by early April.

The company’s first-quarter 2024  earnings call  is set for May 16, and any guidance the company issues on the call could be the catalyst that pushes the stock out of its limbo.

As of this article's last update, company insiders held about a quarter of Grab's stock, while institutional investors  — including Morgan Stanley, Blackrock, Invesco, and Bank of America — held just shy of 55% percent. Short interest  stood at 2.73%, indicating largely positive sentiment.

Tipranks listed Grab as a "strong buy" based on 10 analyst ratings with an average 12-month upside of about 34%.

During the company’s last earnings call, CEO Anthony Tan said that Grab has grown to become the “largest on-demand platform in the region at a scale that is over 3x larger than [its] next-closest competitor.”

He also noted that, as pandemic-related travel hesitation has waned, the company’s “mobility revenues also increased by 26% YoY in Q4 and 36% YoY for the entire year, driven by an increase in tourist ride-hailing demand.”

During the call, Tan mentioned that the brand is increasing its focus on its travel segment. The travel business offers hotel booking and travel insurance services (more on these below), as non-local travelers tend to spend more than local customers in the markets where Grab operates.

All signs point to continued growth, but growth is expensive, so whether the company will continue to post profits in subsequent quarters will depend on how much it spends on acquisitions and partnerships vs. how much it leverages its current assets.

Grab’s services and features explained

Because Grab operates in hundreds of cities across eight different countries, the services it offers vary by location. So, some of the features explained here may not be available in all markets.

For instance, Grab users in Vietnam, where motorbikes are ubiquitous, can order motorbike rides as a cheaper alternative to hiring a car, whereas in Singapore, where motorbikes are less popular, only car taxi rides are available.

Ride-hailing

Taxi-hailing was Grab’s first offering when it launched in Malaysia in 2012. The company’s mobility arm remains one of its most important, although it now ranks second to delivery in terms of revenue.

Functionally, Grab rides work much like those booked through Uber or Lyft in the U.S. Grab users can enter their destination and book taxi rides through the app with the cost shown up-front. Those willing to wait longer for a ride, share a car with other riders, or ride on the back of a motorbike can access lower fares.

All riders can view drivers’ details and ETA, and message drivers with instructions (the app can translate these messages if the rider and driver use different languages). Larger vehicles, pet-friendly cars, cars with booster seats for children, and luxury vehicles are also available at various price points.

Delivery services

Grab offers three types of delivery services: food, mart, and express. Together, these services account for more revenue than the company’s ride-hailing services.

Grab’s food-delivery feature is quite similar to DoorDash and Uber Eats. Customers can browse the menus of a variety of restaurants, ranging from street carts to fine dining, and order food for delivery, pick-up, or dine-in. Deliveries can be immediate or scheduled, and in-app discounts, coupons, and rewards are sometimes made available.

Grab’s mart delivery feature is similar to American apps like Instacart and GoPuff. Users can browse the wares of partner grocery, pharmacy, and convenience stores and order anything from food staples to toiletries. Deliveries can scheduled ahead of time or placed on an ASAP basis.

GrabExpress

GrabExpress is the company’s courier feature, which offers the types of services bike messengers provide in large American cities. A user requests a delivery and then hands off their parcel to a Grab partner, who immediately totes it to its destination, providing photographic proof of delivery upon completion.

This service can be used to send anything from a confidential single-page document to a 50 kg (110 lb) package, and all deliveries are automatically insured up to $500 (additional protection of up to $2,000 can be purchased for higher-value deliveries).

Financial services

Since around 2017, Grab has been expanding the financial side of its app via strategic acquisitions and partnerships with fintech companies. Its financial products vary depending on location, but most center around the GrabPay Wallet.

GrabPay Wallet

The GrabPay Wallet is a cashless payment system Grab customers can use to pay for Grab services, pay bills, send money to others, and make purchases online and in-person at merchants that accept GrabPay.

The GrabPay Wallet’s functionality is similar to that of Paypal or Apple Pay, and by using it, customers accumulate GrabRewards points that can be redeemed toward any of the services the Grab app offers.

Rider and driver insurance

Grab riders are automatically insured up to $20,000 in personal accident coverage whenever they hail a car or bike, and supplementary coverage of up to $100,000 can be purchased for an additional $0.30 per ride.

Grab drivers are also insured automatically up to $20,000 for accident-caused death or disability and up to $2,000 for accident-caused medical expenses.

Third-party liability insurance also covers drivers up to $200,000 for injury or property damage to others. Driver insurance also pays out up to $200 per day for 60 days of hospitalized medical leave or 14 days of non-hospitalized medical leave.

Grab also offers some in-app solutions for non-local travelers, although these are still somewhat limited.

Travel insurance

Grab users who are traveling can use the app to purchase travel insurance that covers things like medical expenses, delays, and lost luggage. Users enter basic information like their destination and trip duration, and the app provides an instant quote, with daily premiums starting at around $4.

Hotel booking

Grab users can book stays at millions of hotels directly through the Grab app, sometimes with Grab-exclusive discounts, earning Grab rewards as they do so.

Taylor Swift performs in Accor Stadium, Sydney, in sequined costume in front of orange background

Taylor Swift fans given ‘urgent warning’ as £1m lost in ticket scams

Lloyds Bank says more than 600 of its customers have been tricked by fraudsters so far

A rise in fraud cases involving Taylor Swift fans desperate to buy tickets to her sold-out UK shows has prompted Lloyds Bank to issue an “ urgent warning ” after more than 600 of its customers were scammed.

With the superstar due to arrive in Europe next month , the high street bank said its data suggested that UK fans had lost more than £1m to fraudsters so far.

Swift is doing 15 huge shows in Great Britain, made up of eight nights at Wembley Stadium in London, plus three apiece in Liverpool and Edinburgh and one in Cardiff.

The run of shows, which starts in Edinburgh on 7 June, will involve her performing in front of almost 1.2 million people. However, demand for tickets massively outstripped supply when they went on sale last year, prompting many disappointed fans to hunt for them online and on social media. That has created the ideal conditions for scammers to target people with a range of online cons.

Lloyds said an analysis of scam reports made by its customers found there had been a rise in fraud cases involving people attempting to buy tickets for the star’s Eras Tour.

It added that since tickets went on sale last summer, more than 600 customers had come forward to report being scammed, which it said was “significantly more than for any other music artist”.

The average amount lost by each victim was £332, though in some cases it was more than £1,000.

As these figures are based solely on Lloyds Bank’s own customer data, it estimated that across the UK there are likely to have been at least 3,000 victims since tickets went on sale, suggesting more than £1m has been lost to fraudsters so far.

Lloyds said Taylor Swift ticket scams were “flooding” social media, and added that more than 90% of the reported cases started with fake adverts or posts on Facebook, although Facebook Marketplace says the purchase and sale of concert tickets is allowed.

“With all UK dates now sold out, many more fans are likely to fall victim to ticket scams in the coming weeks and months, both leading up to the tour and once the concerts begin in June,” said a spokesperson for the bank.

after newsletter promotion

Purchase scams involve someone being tricked into sending money via bank transfer to buy concert tickets or other items that do not exist.

Liz Ziegler, the bank’s fraud prevention director, said: “Cruel fraudsters have wasted no time in targeting [Swift’s] most loyal fans as they rush to pick up tickets for her must-see concerts.”

She added: “Buying directly from reputable, authorised platforms is the only way to guarantee you’re paying for a genuine ticket … If you’re being asked to pay by bank transfer, particularly from a seller you’ve found on social media, that should immediately set alarm bells ringing.”

In the UK, the ticketing companies AXS and Ticketmaster run official Taylor Swift ticket resale services, and probably the best advice for would-be buyers is to regularly check these in the coming days and weeks, as there will be people who booked but are now unable to attend because of a holiday, illness or change of circumstances.
