Benmont Tench , who was the keyboardist for the Heartbreakers from their inception in the 1970s through Petty’s death in 2017, and Ryan Ulyate , Petty’s producer in his latter era and the keeper of the archival keys, discussed with Variety what made the original run legendary among fans, and what went into making the newly released boxed set (and its more condensed cousin) work.

Popular on Variety

“We were being what I had always wanted us to be,” the keyboardist adds, “which was a band that pulls stuff out in the middle of the set, off the cuff, or that learns three or four songs in a soundcheck just to throw ’em in.” Up to that point he had had some jealousy of the more free-wheeling approach of Elvis Costello and the Attractions, “and other bands on smaller levels and bigger that were changing it up and just going, ‘Hey, let’s throw this in. This will be fun. Let’s try it. Let’s challenge ourselves.’ I loved watching Steve Nieve when he’d pull some entirely different thread out of his head and play something on the Vox Continental where he’d played it on the piano the previous time I’d seen them. That was what I wanted to do…

“I also think he felt a responsibility to the audience, and it wasn’t to give them a jukebox, but it was to make sure that if they spent all that money on parking, babysitters, tickets, travel, etc., they were going to hear their favorite song. And so unless you do super-long shows like Bruce (Springsteen) or the (Grateful) Dead or whatever, that’s gonna preclude the chance” to emphasize spontaneity. “But when the decision was made to play the Fillmore for 20 nights, then that was the whole reason to play the Fillmore.”

Of the 20 shows, the last six were professionally recorded, and it was the task of Ulyate and his co-producer on the new set, Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell, to sift through the tapes and find the best takes. There were some songs that appeared in the first 14 shows that did not make it into “Live at the Fillmore, but Ulyate says that every song the band played even once during those final six nights is represented in the four-hour deluxe edition — 58 tracks, 35 of which are covers. That version of the new album exists as a four-CD or six-LP set. If you don’t need that much Heartbreakers in your life, there is a more distilled version that is only two CDs or three LPs, running only two hours, and containing 33 tracks, 18 of which are covers. (Read Jem Aswad’s review of the collection here .)

“So you’ve kind of got your introductory version and your hardcore version,” says Ulyate. Even with the mammoth four-hour edition, Ulyate says, “It does still have the arc of a massive concert. And actually the last night that they did was not that much less than four hours anyway, as they kept on playing encore after encore. … When you’re sequencing an album, sometimes you go, ‘Gosh, it’s going on a little too long.’ And every so often we’d find a song and I’d go, ‘Where are we gonna put this? Because one thing I learned from Tom is that everything has to fit together — the sequencing and the story, that ebb and flow. Somehow we managed to get all the songs that they did (over those six nights) and make it work” for any brave soul who might take in all that flow in the flow of a single sitting.

Talking about their early development in the ’70s, Tench says, “The Heartbreakers were a band that loved to play covers, so early on in the touring history, we played ‘Dark End of the Street.’ We played James Brown’s ‘Good, Good Lovin’.’ I think we may have played the Ricky Nelson ‘Waitin’ in School’ once or twice with Stan (Lynch, their original drummer) on gigs. And of course if we were rehearsing, that’s what we were doing. In order not to rehearse, we would play a bunch of covers!”

The Fillmore represented a return to that like few other engagements the band did, although they pulled out a lot of covers again in a few residencies in the years that followed, including extended runs at the Beacon in New York, the Fonda in L.A. and the Vic in Chicago.

Tench emphasizes that this was all Petty’s concept, although it made the keyboardist’s dream for the band come true. “We could play whatever the hell we wanted and we didn’t have to rehearse it, necessarily. And the audience was with us the whole way. They were delighted if we played ‘Goldfinger’ — which did need rehearsal. So did ‘Slaughter on 10th Avenue.’ ‘Satisfaction’ certainly needed no rehearsal! I don’t think ‘It’s All Over Now’ needed a rehearsal. We should have rehearsed what’s called ‘Bye Bye, Johnny’ on the record, because Tom starts it as (Chuck Berry’s) ‘Johnny B. Goode,’ but after the first verse, he can’t remember the words clearly, so he sings some sort of version of ‘Bye Bye Johnny.’ Clearly, there’s another rehearsal (needed) there. Other songs, he’d just start playing it and we’d fall in, because we knew how to do that. It was just joyous, you know?”

Tench notes that this ability to pick up the ball immediately, under pressure, is why they were able to tour as Bob Dylan’s backing band (as well as opening act) in the early ’80s. “With Bob, we were really good at falling in on anything. The most we spent rehearsal with Bob would be endings. The first time we went out with Bob to Australia and New Zealand to Japan, we spent like a week, I think, working on endings, endings, endings. Those would be a little bit trickier. But as far as the songs went, unless it was more obscure, like ‘In the Garden,’ we could just fall in on Bob songs. We ran through them anyway. But still, on the tour, he would decide to just play ‘Desolation Row,’ which we’d never rehearsed.”

The rest of the band was well prepared for an anything-can-happen set every night at the Fillmore, but there was one member for whom this was anything but customary: fairly new drummer Steve Ferrone, who replaced Lynch after the original drummer had a fallout with Petty. Ferrone had actually joined the group for the preceding tour behind the “Wallflowers” album, having played on that solo effort. But this was something different.

Says Tench, remembering a little bit of anxiety about it at the start, “Steve can fall in on anything, but I don’t know that his career had consisted of doing that since he was a teenager, like ours did,” says the keyboard player. “And if you are doing ‘Breakdown,’ or ‘Nightwatchman’ from ‘Hard Promises,’ you pretty much want to nail the groove that’s on the record. You don’t wanna just make up a groove — or maybe you do. But I felt for him, because at this point we had done one major tour with him but he still didn’t know our catalog. And I had sympathy for the band, too, because he’s a radically different drummer than Stan was. I know I had to shift the inflection of my groove to fit with Steve, so it was give-and-take.” Not that Tench welcomed Ferrone into the fray with anything less than massive respect, especially since the drummer was the powerhouse percussionist behind “one of my favorite albums ever, the Average White Band’s ‘Cut the Cake,’ which is just a ridiculous album.”

Even forgetting about Ferrone for a moment, Ulyate thinks this “Fillmore” set captures a lineup of the band that didn’t exist for long but had its essential benefits in overlap, after Scott Thurston joined and before Howie Epstein left. “With this lineup, you have really three background singers — you’ve got Benmont, who’s always there as a great singer, and then you’ve got Howie, who was just a phenomenal singer, and then you’ve got Scott. So, at the Fillmore in ‘97, the vocal level was really high, and they were able to do all these songs that had all these great harmonies, like ‘Time Is on My Side’ and even the three Byrds covers. “If you listen to ‘Eight Miles High,’ Howie and Scott and Ben are doing a pretty good job of being the rest of the Byrds along with Mr. McGuinn.” (Roger McGuinn was a guest during the dates, as was bluesman John Lee Hooker.)

Petty made a statement at the time that the Fillmore run was a peak experience in the band’s history, but no one thinks he should be beholden to that sentiment forever, since there were 25 years more of Heartbreakers history to come. Says Tench, “The Beacon Theater in New York to me was even more of a highlight in its musicality than the Fillmore, because we had been together longer, so we slid into those grooves because we knew each other’s playing better.” But in all these residencies, he says, the band “had to come down from the size of the arena to do this. Everybody in the room didn’t know it, but I knew the difference in the way Tom sang ‘Free Fallin’’ or ‘You Don’t Know How It Feels’ at the Fillmore as opposed to an arena, and I’m certain there was a difference in the way that we played those, too. This is a moment in time of a band playing really great, and going out on a limb a bit, sometimes more than a bit.

Tench is still not going to call “Live at the Fillmore” the ultimate Petty/Heartbreakers live project — he thinks that already came, even if it was precisely the opposite of this concentration. “My favorite live thing of ours is the ‘Live Anthology,’ which we compiled 13 years ago. I think it’s the best representation I’ve seen of the band overall live, because it draws from the beginning of our career, like a radio performance of ‘Breakdown,’ and it’s got Stan and it’s got Steve, and it’s got ‘Wildflowers’ and it’s got the first album. It’s got stuff from everywhere.”

Ulyate notes that he and Petty had listened to all the Fillmore tapes when they were compiling “Live Anthology” for 2009 release, and it was clear then that it was Petty’s wish to put out a Fillmore-only box at some point. “A couple of the tracks that are on this deluxe version had also appeared on the anthology, like ‘Jammin’ Me’ and ‘Diddy Wah Diddy.’ Even then, that kind of flagged it for us as something to go back and really do a deep dive into. ‘Live Anthology’ was more just really trying to take 40 years and make a whole story out of it. This is trying to take 20 nights and making a whole story out of it.”

Ulyate declines to comment or speculate on what might be next in a series of Petty archival digs that could go on for many years, given what is known or believed to be in the vault and of top quality. Fans wouldn’t mind getting a box out of one of those other, later residencies, but common sense would indicate that they might rotate studio material in for the next project, possibly something where there is known to be a lot of alternative material unreleased, like “Southern Accents.” Adria Petty, Tom’s daughter, who is integral in picking and working on these sets, has already said on the record that no selection has yet been made for the next one.

“Just like I was always deferential to Tom in terms of what’s next,” Ulyate says, “at this point, I trust the brain trust. I trust the family to just give the guidance about where we go next with it. And I feel really good about the core group and the people closest to Tom that are really working to keep his legacy and preserve it.”

At a recent listening session with most of the band members at the SiriusXM studios, it was easy to see those who’ve survived Petty experiencing bittersweet emotions, between the joy of having live tracks that sound like they could and should be happening in the here-and-now and the ongoing sense of loss in knowing it won’t be happening again in the flesh.

Gainesville celebrates rock ‘n’ roll legend Tom Petty despite last year’s controversy

Heartwood hosted tom petty weekend oct. 20-22.

Rob Ellis Peck plays with his band during the Tom Petty Festival at Heartwood Soundstage Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022.

Under the colored lights and fog emitting from the stage, children ran around the venue and couples danced in the moonlight while the crowd sang along to Mudcrutch’s “Scare Easy,” kicking off a memorable weekend for Tom Petty fans.

Former members of Mudcrutch — the Gainesville-based 1970s band known for launching Tom Petty’s rise to fame — were only one part of a long lineup of musical acts playing Tom Petty Weekend, a three-day festival at Heartwood Soundstage.

Between Oct. 20 to Oct. 22, more than 3,000 Petty fans gathered to celebrate the life and music of the rock ‘n’ roll legend, who died in October 2017. Tickets ranged from free general admission passes to VIP gold and silver packages, which cost up to $125.

Rob Nechanicky, a 49-year-old administrator for official fan club Tom Petty Nation, said the festival offered an opportunity for fans from across the country to pay homage to Petty’s legacy in his hometown.

“The magic is here in Gainesville,” he said. “Talking to the locals, you can see why Tom Petty was the person he was.”

Performing acts included Mudcrutch’s guitarist Tom Leadon, The Mudpies featuring Mudcrutch’s bassist Danny Roberts, Jeff Slate, Jake Thistle, Maggie Clifford and more. There were also storytelling sessions with Paul Zollo, the author of “Conversations with Tom Petty,” and some of Petty’s close friends.

General admission holders could enjoy all outdoor festivities, while VIP gold and silver ticket holders had access to indoor performances and the private storytelling sessions.

Tom Petty Weekend followed last year’s controversy surrounding celebrations for Petty in Gainesville. In November 2021, the Gainesville City Commission voted to replace the free Annual Tom Petty Birthday Bash in Depot Park with a for-profit event organized by Petty’s daughter Adria.

Heartwood’s owner and general manager Dave Melosh and producer and volunteer Dan Spiess met with Adria Petty and Keith Eveland, the 58-year-old Tom Petty Nation manager, prior to the event, fan club administrator Brien Norton said. Spiess told The Gainesville Sun the Petty family said they had no plans to proceed with their for-profit festival this year.

Norton, 61, also said Heartwood worked to make the event representative of Petty’s music legacy. For example, he said, Spiess and Melosh implemented a new sound system that could reach the front and back of the crowd.

Eveland, who has worked with Petty’s management to set up events across the country, was pleased with Heartwood’s Tom Petty Weekend. They wanted to put on an event Petty would be proud of, he said.

The heart of Tom Petty weekend centered around honoring the impact Petty had on the Gainesville music scene and the fans who supported his career from its early beginnings.

Rod Guynn, 73, a retired teacher at Belleview High School and Petty’s first cousin, performed at the festival alongside his brother.  Petty was single-minded on pursuing music from the moment he was old enough to choose what he wanted to do, Guynn said.

“We would listen to Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Ritchie Valens — the famous country and pop music recording artists of the time,” Guynn said. “That was Tom’s favorite thing to do. We had to drag him out…to play softball or play in the creek.”

Petty was already performing in local bands like The Sundowners and The Epics around Gainesville when he was a teenager, Guynn said. During the early ’70s, he said, Mudcrutch was a cover band that would perform Southern rock at Gainesville pubs and UF’s Halloween Ball.

Because Petty’s career started in Gainesville, Guynn said, it’s important that Heartwood gives

residents of all generations a place to enjoy and hear his music.

“There’s going to be every kind of expression of his music that you can imagine,” he said. “I think it tells how the music speaks to a variety of people, styles and backgrounds.”

Though it has a particular meaning to family members and friends, Petty’s music continues to impact people in all corners of the country.

Valentina Sawyer, 58, said she traveled to Gainesville with friends to attend all three days of Tom Petty Weekend.

“It’s like a family, and it’s wonderful,” she said. “We’re so excited — also sad at the same time that we lost our Tom.”

Bob Keppler, 58, has been a fan of Petty since 1980 and flew from Chicago for the festival. Keppler attended with his friend Derek Saunders, 64, who traveled all the way from England to see the performances and storytellings sessions that came with the VIP experience.

“It’s a closeness,” Saunders said. “It brings us together from very different parts of the world.”

For some VIP gold ticket holders like attendee David Wood, Tom Petty Weekend introduced them to the city’s music scene. Wood, 64, recently moved from South Florida to Gainesville and has been exploring the local music scene, which has included visits to High Dive and Heartwood, he said.

“It’s a thriving scene from what I can see, especially because of the university and the kids,” Wood said. “[There’s] a little of everything here.”

Wood is happy celebrations have continued, he said, even after controversies with the Tom Petty Birthday Bash.

Gainesville’s Petty celebrations aren’t over. The Tom Petty Birthday Bash was rebranded as The Bash Music Festival and will be held in Depot Park Nov. 4-6. The festival will include artists who range from rock 'n' roll, Americana, blues, soul and country, according to Bash’s website . There will also be tributes to local legends like Tom Petty, Charles Bradley and Bo Diddley.

Heartwood Soundstage to host Tom Petty Weekend after family pulls plug on Depot Park event

tom petty tour 2022

After months of controversy and uncertainty surrounding the yearly tribute concert in Gainesville for late Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Tom Petty, it appears the show will go on.

Heartwood Soundstage, 619 S. Main St., is set to host three days of free music and stories beginning Oct. 20, Petty's birthday, and running through Oct. 22.

"We have about 15 acts coming from California and New Jersey and all points in between,” said producer and Heartwood Soundstage volunteer Dan Spiess. “We've come got some really incredibly talented people coming that all love Tom Petty."

Those scheduled to perform include Jake Thistle, former Mudcrutch guitarist Tom Leadon, The Mudpies featuring former Mudcrutch bassist Danny Roberts, guitarist Nancy Luca, local favorite Shine and the Shakers, The Shambles and many others.

A storytelling session late Friday afternoon will feature tales from several of Petty’s friends, including Paul Zollo, author of “Conversations with Tom Petty,” Gainesville natives Mike Boulware and Nancy Luca, Roberts (Mudcrutch) and author Bob Kealing.

Spiess said about 90% of the music will be performed outside, while the other 10% will be performed live inside the venue for VIP ticket holders. Those outside will still be able to see the inside performances thanks to a large video screen that will be set up on the lawn.

The festival comes after the Tom Petty family had planned to organize an event this year at Depot Park that would have brought in nationally recognized acts to honor the late musician who died on Oct. 2, 2017.

In November 2021, however, the family was taken aback after the city received backlash from residents following a proposal to close the park for several days for the event.

“I think we’re just hitting pause right now,” Petty’s daughter, Adria Petty, told The Sun last November .

Plans for the Full Moon Fever Festival — as the Petty family event was to be called — also upset local organizers of the original Tom Petty Birthday Bash, which was free and open to the public at Depot Park in 2018 and 2019.

Bash organizers said the idea of fencing off a public park and charging an admission fee seemed like bad policy and against the original idea of the show. They also were concerned that local musicians and vendors would be pushed out.

“They are all going to be replaced by the corporate people that they bring in,” said Paula Hedges, an accounts manager for the bash, in November 2021.

Spiess said that pushback from residents and bash organizers gave the city a black eye.

"I think it really hurt this town in some respects,” he said. “It was like watching one of your good friends go through a divorce or something — nothing good can come from this.”

Spiess said that once the Petty family made it clear that it had no plans to put on a festival this year, those at Heartwood Soundstage “proceeded to go through the long, drawn-out process of asking for their permission.”

"Everyone at Heartwood really feels strongly that honoring Tom Petty is really important,” Spiess said. “One of the very few famous people in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that was literally born and raised right here in Gainesville."

Spiess also said that if the Petty family decides to hold its own festival here in the future, Heartwood Soundstage would gladly take a backseat.

"We will hold the door open because we think it will do nothing but good for Gainesville if they hold a yearly festival here," he said.

Tom Petty Weekend is the start of three consecutive weekends full of music in Gainesville. The Fest, the city's annual punk-rock festival , is scheduled for Oct. 28-30. That event will be followed up by The BASH Music Festival , a rebranding of the original Tom Petty Birthday Bash, Nov. 4-6.

The BASH at Depot Park and will feature national, regional and local artists playing a variety of music, including rock ‘n’ roll, Americana, blues, soul and country.

Among those scheduled to perform are Mavis Staples, Drive-By Truckers, Patterson Hood, Lilly Hiatt and more. For more information, sponsorship information or to upgrade to a VIP package, visit thebashgnv.com .

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ New Live Album Captures Fabled 1997 Residency at San Francisco’s Fillmore

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ New Live Album Captures Fabled 1997 Residency at San Francisco’s Fillmore

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ’ fabled 20-show run at San Francisco’s Fillmore in 1997 is the subject of a new deluxe box set coming on November 25th.

Live at the Fillmore (1997) is being put out by Warner Records in collaboration with Petty’s estate and Mike Campbell. It marks the first Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers live album to be released in 13 years.

Various configurations of Live at the Fillmore (1997) will be available, including a 3xLP version simulating one of the concerts and a comprehensive box set comprised of 58 songs and 14 humorous spoken word tracks. The material featured on the release was curated by Campbell and Ryan Ulyate alongside executive producers Benmont Tench, Adria Petty, Annakim Petty, and Dana Petty.

Much of the material found on the tracklist are covers, including songs by Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Everly Brothers, Bill Withers, The Byrds, as well on-stage collaborations with The Byrds’ Roger McGuinn and John Lee Hooker.

“Playing the Fillmore in 1997 for a month was one of my favorite experiences as a musician in my whole life,” said Campbell in a statement. “The band was on fire and we changed the set list every night. The room and the crowd was spiritual… AND… we got to play with some amazing guests. I will always remember those nights with joy and inspiration.”

Below, you can preview Live at the Fillmore (1997) via a live recording of “Listen To Her Heart,” as well as see the tracklist for the 6xLP uber deluxe edition. Pre-orders are now ongoing .

Mike Campbell Confirms Tom Petty Fillmore Performances Box Set

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers played many gigs during their 40-year history as a group. But the band’s 1997 residency at the Fillmore in San Francisco looms large in the memory of many fans. Now, a box set collecting the best of the many songs performed during the run has recently been completed.

“It’s been mixed [and] I hear it is coming out,” guitarist Mike Campbell confirms during a conversation with UCR, though no release date has been scheduled. “I’m really proud of it. It was one of the greatest parts of our career. We were free to not have to play the hits every night. We changed the set list.”

Settling in for a 20 night stand at the San Francisco venue in January and February of that year, it was clear from the start just how much fun Petty and the band were having, playing to an audience of about 1,200 guests per show. Each night of the sold out residency boasted a set list that was wildly different from the previous evening.

A selection of the group’s own hits and deeper cuts mixed seamlessly with a generous selection of covers. Some, like their take on the Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil,” paid tribute to the area itself. Others, such as Booker T and the MG’s “Green Onions,” honored their influences.

The final night of the stand on Feb. 7, was broadcast live nationwide on the radio and found the band stretching out for more than three hours and 40 songs, the longest show of the run.

They would return to the Fillmore in 1999 for additional shows, with highlights from that year seeing release on the High Grass Dogs DVD. Similar residencies would follow in other cities, but nothing would ever top the length and excitement of that original San Francisco stint.

Campbell is preparing to release External Combustion , the second album with his current band, the Dirty Knobs. He says he's happy the Fillmore run is finally getting a fresh round of attention with the forthcoming release. “We changed the songs every night and took some liberties with some of the arrangements here and there,” he remembers. “I’m really glad we got that on tape. Of course, we had some guest artists like John Lee Hooker, Roger McGuinn , Bo Diddley.”

While a handful of songs were included on The Live Anthology box set in 2009, this will be the first proper release focused on the Fillmore shows. Campbell has previously expressed hope that a box set covering these performances would be released, describing the Fillmore residency as "almost the pinnacle of the band" in 2018. “It’s a really good illustration of the Heartbreakers just being spontaneous and in the moment without being too rehearsed,” he tells UCR. “I’m really proud of that.”
