Everything You Need to Know About Córdoba’s Calahorra Tower

Córdoba’s Calahorra Tower dates back to the 12th century and is now a museum

At the southern end of Córdoba’s Roman Bridge is the Torre de la Calahorra (Calahorra Tower), originally constructed as a defence building in the Middle Ages but since used for various other purposes, including a prison and a quarantine centre. Today, this formidable structure houses one of Córdoba’s most informative museums.

Córdoba’s Torre de la Calahorra lies at the southern end of the Puente Romano (Roman Bridge) – the lone architectural landmark in an otherwise unremarkable residential district. It was built in the 12th century by the city’s Moorish occupants to defend it from invaders; originally, the two rectangular towers were connected by an archway, under which the northbound road led over the Río Guadalquivir and into the city centre.

Well-positioned archers’ slits and high battlements enabled Calahorra’s occupants to watch their enemies approaching from miles outside the city, thus making the tower a powerful deterrent to attack. But it didn’t always guarantee victory: in June 1236, a besieged Córdoba eventually fell to King Ferdinand III of Castile.

The Calahorra underwent significant extension and renovation in the late 14th century when Córdoba was under the dominion of King Enrique II (Henry II). He had taken the throne in 1369 after defeating forces led by his half-brother, Pedro I of Castile (nicknamed Peter the Cruel by his enemies, but known as Peter the Just among his supporters), at the Battle of Montiel. Henry sealed a hard-won victory by luring Peter out of Montiel castle, where he’d become trapped after the conflict, and stabbing him to death. Subsequently, the security-conscious monarch added a third, cylindrical tower to connect the Calahorra’s outer two, in order to better defend Córdoba during the numerous rebellions that marked his reign.

Nowadays, the tower houses one of Córdoba’s most interesting museums, the Museo Vivo de al-Andalus (the Living Museum of al-Andalus, as medieval Moorish Spain was known). Spread over three floors and nine rooms, its permanent collection examines Córdoba’s remarkable pluralism and sophistication from the ninth to the 13th centuries when it was the largest city in Europe. Panels and audiovisual presentations explore the three religions that existed side by side in medieval Córdoba – Judaism, Christianity and Islam – as well as the pioneering work in philosophy, technology and medicine performed by its most prominent figures.

Don’t miss Hall 7, where you’ll find an amazingly detailed model of the city’s Mosque-Cathedral, the real-life version of which is a 10-minute walk away over the Puente Romano. You can also enjoy panoramic views of Córdoba from the rooftop battlements, where, at various times, Moorish and Christian commanders once scoured the land for approaching invaders. Entry to the museum starts at €4.50 (£4.10) for adults and €3 (£2.75) for children.

Dominating the town, the castle-alcazar, perfectly preserved, is a prominent work of the Italian Renaissance dating from 1509.

In its basement, cells where Moors prisoners, who were to be transferred to the Chancery of Granada, overnight, are still preserved.

Declared a National Monument, it is now in private hands, although it can be accessed by contacting the person in charge that the owners have in Calahorra.

Torre de la Calahorra

Tower in córdoba.

Torre De La Callahora, Cordoba

The Torre de la Calahorra or Calahorra tower is a fortified gate in Córdoba, Andalusia in Spain. The edifice is of Islamic origin.

The defensive system of the building is significant: strong walls, deep moat, as well as the numerous and narrow loopholes, where cannons and other artillery pieces were located, or its pyramidal battlement at the top, showing the enemy its role as an inviolable fortress.

Museo Vivo de Al-Andaluz

The Torre de la Calahorra currently houses the Museo Vivo de Al-Andaluz . This fascinating museum is particularly educational with audio visual presentations which vividly depict how life was in Cordoba around the 10th Century AD when three cultures lived side by side Christianity, Muslim and Judaism. Visitors are immersed into the culture of al-Andalus: its characters, its daily life, its wisdom, its science, its architecture and its music. An audio guide system is included in the price of entry. It also presents the early height of science, culture, and engineering that gave Andalusia a leading position centuries ago.

Don’t miss out on going on the roof for a spectacular view of the mosque and the city.

History of the Calahorra Tower

The most likely hypothesis is that the tower was built in Islamic times, and later reused and transformed in Christian times.

It was extensively restored by King Enrique II  of Castile in 1369 to defend the city from attack by his brother  Pedro I the Cruel  from the South. He added a third cylindrical shaped tower connecting the outer two.

In the 18th century it was used as a prison and in the 19th century it was a girls school.

The tower was declared a national historical monument in 1931. The restoration of the tower, along with the Roman Bridge, Gate of the Bridge and surrounding area, was awarded the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Award in 2014.

Masters 2024 leaderboard: Live Round 3 updates, Tiger Woods, Scottie Scheffler scores

The wind and firm conditions wreaked havoc on players during Friday's second round, pushing the cut line up to 6 over at Augusta National for the 2024 Masters.

Saturday's weather forecast is projected to be sunny with a high of 76 degrees, according to AccuWeather. The site says it will be "a great day for golf." Scottie Scheffler, Max Homa and Bryson DeChambeau opened the day at 6 under and in a tie for the lead.

Here's a look at our second-round coverage . And here's our full Masters hub , complete with scoreboards, course previews and more.

Bryson DeChambeau drops a shot, falls two off lead

While Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa breezed through the first three holes on Saturday, 36-hole co-leader Bryson DeChambeau struggled out of the gate, making par on the par 5 second and then posting a bogey on No. 3.

On Friday, after hitting his tee shot right on the par-5 13th hole, DeChambeau had no choice but to punch out toward the 14th fairway. In doing so, he had to move a sign out of the way, one of those giant signs that point patrons at Augusta National Golf Club toward different areas of the grounds.

Cameras caught him in the act carrying the sign around like a toy on his shoulder, and social media had a field day reacting to the latest DeChambeau highlight.

Collin Morikawa off to hot start

It was a smooth start to Saturday for Collin Morikawa, who made birdie on the first three holes of the day to get to 6 under for the tournament.

Morikawa has played well at Augusta, finishing T-10 last year, 5th in 2022 and T-18 in 2021.

https://twitter.com/TheMasters/status/1779226891037155559

After a second-round 70 in which he birdied three of the last six holes, Morikawa felt his game was trending in the right direction.

"Look, this is exactly where I'd want to be. Obviously I'd rather be a little lower and closer to the lead, but for right now after I've been playing the past kind of month, I'm very, very happy," he said. "It feels like I have control of the golf ball, and that's the biggest thing. My irons have been holding me back, and normally that's not the case. It's kind of nice to just hit some quality golf shots."

Just as Morikawa cut the lead to one, however, Scheffler dropped his second birdie in the opening three holes to get to 8 under.

A concert? At Augusta National? It happened

The Butler Cabin at Augusta National Golf Club. (Photo: Rob Schumacher-USA TODAY Sports)

Larry Gatlin — the famed country musician — stood beneath the Clubhouse Oak tree on Tuesday morning as clouds hovered over the Masters Tournament.

According to Gatlin, it’s been 40 years since he was asked to perform inside Butler Cabin, at an annual singalong called “The Friday Sing.”

“I stayed in a house with Ben (Crenshaw) at the 1984 Masters, and after Ben won, we were in the locker room with Charlie Yates,” Gatlin said.

Here's more on the incredible story.

Aberg, Fox, Morikawa making early moves

While the final pairings are about to tee off, there's a little bit of noise being made behind them by the chase group of players under par.

Ludvig Aberg birdied No. 2 to get to 3 under, while Ryan Fox opened with three consecutive birdies to get to 4 under. Collin Morikawa also birdied No. 1 to get to 4 under.

On a day where no truly low scores have been posted, any amount of early birdies will help in the long run.

Which amateurs made the cut?

There is no question about the top amateur in the field for the 2024 Masters: come Sunday, Neal Shipley, a graduate student at Ohio State, will receive the Silver Cup and get to sit next to the champion in Butler Cabin after the conclusion of play, rewards for earning Low Amateur honors at the Masters.

A stellar performance during the first round helped the U.S. Amateur runner-up earn weekend plans. Shipley dropped a couple shots on Saturday morning and sat at 5 over through eight holes in the third round.

Here's a look at how the five amateurs performed at Augusta National.

Masters purse breakdown

Not only will the winner of the 2024 Masters earn the coveted Green Jacket, they'll take home a record payday too.

The payout for winning first place will reach another high, as the Augusta National Golf Club announced the purse for the Masters is $20 million. It's an increase from $18 million in 2023 and $15 million in 2022. With more money being handed out, this year's winner of the Masters will take home the highest winnings in its storied history.

Here's how much the top 10 will win:

$3.6 million$2.16 million$1.36 million$960,000$800,000$720,000$670,000$620,000$580,000$540,000

Are we due for an ace?

The Masters is halfway over, and there hasn't been an ace this week.

There have been 34 holes-in-one during the Masters, the latest coming in 2022. And as you can guess, the 16th hole has recorded the most aces of any hole at Augusta National with 24.

With calmer wind conditions expected in the coming days, it will be interesting to see whether players are able to take more direct lines at the flag and get close for a hole-in-one.

Here's a look at every ace in the history of the Masters .

Former NFL head coaches on site

Former Washington Commanders and Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera was seen at Augusta cruising around, taking in the golf.

He wasn't the only former NFL head coach/golf junkie.

Turns out former New York Jets boss Rex Ryan was there, too .

https://twitter.com/RyanEFox2/status/1778840414889414732

Ryan, now an analyst on ESPN, visited the telecast sporting a Detroit Lions golf polo. His son,  Seth Ryan , is an assistant wide receivers coach in Detroit on Dan Campbell's staff.

At 1 under through 36 holes, Tommy Fleetwood's mindset at the 2024 Masters was to embrace the conditions, saying, “Enjoy the grind out there and just keep putting one foot in front of the other.”

And helping him do so was looper Gray Moore.

Moore, the former caddie master at Augusta National, is filling in for Fleetwood’s longtime caddie Ian Finnis, who is sidelined with an illness.

“Just a wonderful human being,” Fleetwood said of Moore. “I’ve loved every second out here with him.”

Tiger Woods set to tee off

Tiger Woods set the all-time record for consecutive cuts made at the Masters on Friday when he signed for an even-par 73 in the second round to solidify his spot inside the cut line for a 24th consecutive start at the first men’s major championship of the season. In 26 career appearances at the Masters, his lone missed cut came in 1996 as an amateur.

Sitting T-22 at 1 over par for the tournament to start the day, Woods will tee off at 12:45 p.m. ET alongside everyone’s favorite hothead Tyrrell Hatton in the third round on Saturday. Take a scroll below to follow Tiger’s Moving Day round with shot-by-shot live updates from the 2024 Masters at Augusta National.

Looking for the likely winner? It's probably in this list

Bryson DeChambeau, Max Homa, Scottie Scheffler, Nicolai Hojgaard, Cam Davis, Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Aberg, Byeong Hun An, Tommy Fleetwood, Ryan Fox, Matthieu Pavon, Cameron Smith, Danny Willett and Cameron Young.

The chances the winner of the 2025 Masters comes from that list are strong, according to a note from golf stat guru Justin Ray. Including ties, everyone in that list is 1 under or better heading into Saturday's play.

Adam Hadwin started the day by fixing the plumbing

At 4 over through two rounds, Adam Hadwin was safely inside the cut line and qualified for the weekend at the 2024 Masters. On Saturday, he is paired with Jason Day and the duo went off at 11:35 a.m.

But before he teed it up, the Canadian was apparently working on the plumbing in his rental house in Augusta.

This post came today from Hadwin's wife Jessica, known as one of the funnier WAG social media posters:

Looking for 2025 Masters tickets? Good luck

Those hopeful of being patrons at the 2025 Masters can apply for multiple days at each event but are only eligible to secure tickets for one day. Applications are also limited to one per household.

Prices fluctuate, but the 2024 ticket cost was $100 for practice rounds and $140 for tournaments rounds. For the final round of the ANWA, it was $100; the DCP National Finals tickets were $25.

Hard to beat that value.

The only way to pay for tickets is through the website. Augusta National will inform those who have been selected in late July.

More information can be found on the official  Masters website .

Hideki Matsuyama off to fast start in Round 3

Although he barely made the cut at 6 over, Hideki Matsuyama has started his weekend strong, posting birdies on both the second and third holes to get to 4 over.

Hideki Matsuyama became the first Japanese player to win the Masters in 2021. It was his first major championship victory.

In 2022, Matsuyama had another good week tying for 14th.

What can stop Scottie Scheffler? Maybe only a newborn

Scottie Scheffler and his wife Meredith are expecting their first child at the end of the month.

Scheffler told Golf Channel on Monday night that he would leave Augusta and the Masters if Meredith Scheffler went into labor. He doubled down to ESPN during the Par 3 Contest on Wednesday. Meredith Scheffler is not due for another three weeks.

"It’s going to be pretty wild. I don’t think it’s hit either of us quite yet, maybe sometime when the baby is moving around in her stomach a bunch, but it’s an exciting time for us as a family,” Scottie Scheffler said last month. “It’s been a pretty exciting last seven months or so and we’re looking forward to hopefully getting the baby out of there nice and healthy and with a healthy momma and then we’ll go from there.”

Friday's lone score in the 60s? Look to Ludvig Aberg for that

Competing in his first Masters Tournament, Ludvig Aberg carded a 69 on Friday — the lone participant to clip 70 in the second round.

The 24-year-old will receive a crystal vase for achieving the day’s low score.

“It was not easy,” Aberg said. “But I felt like I played pretty good. I especially read the greens well and hit the putts the way I wanted to.”

After making consecutive bogeys on Nos. 5-6, the Swede stormed into contention with circles on 12, 13 and 16. He enters moving day alone in seventh place at 2-under 142.

Here's more on the former Texas Tech star.

Rookie Diary: Malnati feels he's better prepared for future

Peter Malnati and caddie Chad Antus look on from the fourth tee box during the first round of the Masters Tournament. Mandatory Credit: Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Peter Malnati qualified for his first Masters by winning the Valspar Championship last month. The 36-year-old veteran hadn’t won in nearly nine years on the PGA Tour. He shared a first-person account of his experience daily only at Golfweek.com.

This is from his finally entry, after he missed the cut.

In retrospect, I had this mindset that the greens were going to continue to get trickier as the week went on. But I think due to the forecast of high winds, the Masters tournament committee smartly backed off on the green speed a little bit. I was prepared in the wind for these greens to be lightning fast and they kept them at a pretty reasonable level. Kudos to them for doing such a great job. At the same time, it was a huge mistake on my part failing to adjust better. I was very timid on the greens on Thursday and it cost me. I never got into a groove.

Here's the full entry from Malnati.

Tee times, TV listings

Rickie Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama began play at 9:35 a.m. ET, the first pairing to get underway for Saturday’s third round.

Here are all the tee times for Saturday.

Max Homa, Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau are tied for the lead at 6-under entering Saturday and Tiger Woods is at 1-over for the tournament, setting a record by making his 24th consecutive cut at the Masters.

Woods tees off at 12:45 p.m. with Scheffler (2:35 p.m.), Homa (2:45) and DeChambeau (2:45) scheduled to begin in the afternoon.

Odds heading into Saturday

World No. 1  Scottie Scheffler is still the favorite to win the title at Augusta National, potentially adding a second green jacket to his collection, according to BetMGM .

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The second day of the 88th Masters was never going to be kind to Tiger Woods. It was an intersection of worst-case scenarios, with Woods having to play early and often in cold temperatures. It takes him hours to get his battered body ready to play golf, which meant an early wake-up call Friday morning to resume his first round at 7:50 a.m.

He had to play the final five holes of his opening round before arriving at the first tee to start his second. For a man who said earlier this week that “every shot that’s not on a tee box is a challenge,” 18 holes is more than enough. Especially on the hilliest course players face all year. Add in the cold and windy conditions that make it difficult to loosen up a body pieced together by screws and rods and fused joints, and it seemed that the factors had conspired against him this week.

But Friday also was an opportunity to make more history at a course he admires more than any other. Woods said earlier this week that he is here to win. That he teed it up because he believes another victory is still possible “if everything comes together.” Victories are what drive him, but they do not cause him to downplay the seemingly mundane act of just making the cut.

On Friday, he had the opportunity to establish another record cuts streak. He was seeking his 24th consecutive made cut in this tournament, a streak that would surpass the mark he shared with Gary Player and Fred Couples. Despite the unfavorable conditions and his physical limitations, Woods did so with relative ease, shooting 73-72 to finish well inside the line . He was T25 when he walked off the 18th green Friday afternoon. He promised that a needling text message would soon be sent to Couples to mark the occasion.

“It's consistency, it's longevity, and it's an understanding of how to play this golf course,” Woods said Tuesday of the record. "Now, you still have to go out and execute it, but there's a lot of knowledge that goes into understanding how to play (Augusta National). …That's the neat thing about this. I can still go through the mental Rolodex and bring out a few putts from the '90s that still move generally in that direction and the effect that Rae's Creek has on certain shots and putts. And it means a lot.”

Woods’ affection for Augusta National comes not just from the genius of Alister MacKenzie’s design, which allows him to fully utilize his creativity and shot-making skills, but also because of the course’s annual accumulation of history. This is the same place where he played his first major championship, competing in 1995 as the reigning U.S. Amateur champion. He watched from the Crow’s Nest as Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead hit the ceremonial tee shots. Three years later, he marveled at the fact that those three were drinking the milkshakes he had on his Champion’s Dinner menu.

“There's such an aura and mystique about playing this golf course,” he said.

He played practice rounds with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus in his first Masters, and has been playing here long enough to see the likes of Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler put on the green jacket. Augusta National spans generations. Woods missed the cut in his second Masters, so this record-setting streak started with his 12-shot victory here in 1997. He has won here five times but also played through swing changes and injury and personal scandal. No matter what, he has always found a way to make the cut. For two dozen years in a row.

Tiger Woods’ 1997 victory at the Masters | 25 years later

Woods tied the record last year by slogging through torrential rains and temperatures in the 40s as he completed his suspended second round early on a Saturday morning. Woods, who would need ankle surgery weeks later, was seen limping up the hill on the par-4 17th as he finished his round.

This year, he arrived at Augusta National with just 24 holes of competitive golf under his belt.

Though he said late last year that he hoped to compete once a month in 2024, Woods only appeared at The Genesis Invitational before this week. Six holes into his second round at Riviera, he had to withdraw with the flu . His body didn’t allow him to make another start before Augusta, he said.

“Some days I just feel really good,” he said, “and other days, not so much.”

Athletes reflect on Tiger Woods’ 2019 Masters victory

His mind, and his hands, are still world class. The question each time he tees it off is whether his body will allow him to use them to their full capabilities. Woods plays the role of wily veteran these days. No longer overpowering courses with his length, he hits a sliding fade off the tee to keep his ball in play and uses a crafty short game to stay around par. He made the cut easily despite hitting less than half his greens (17 of 36).

"His short game was so good. I don't think I can explain how good some of the chip shots he hit today were," said Max Homa, who played alongside Woods. "He's special.

"We had a really quick turnaround, and if I was feeling tired and awful. I imagine he was feeling even worse," Homa added. "All the cliches you hear about him and all the old stories about how he will grind it out, it was fun to see that in person."

Woods was 1-under par when play was suspended Thursday evening . He made two bogeys on the five holes he played Friday morning, signing for a 1-over 73. He started the second round with pars on his first two holes before playing a six-hole stretch without a single par. He made birdie on the third hole, hitting a 91-yard wedge shot to 9 feet before bogeys on Nos. 4 and 5, two of the course’s most difficult holes. Then he chipped in on the par-3 sixth. He made another bogey after finding a greenside bunker on the par-4 seventh and rebounded with birdie at the par-5 eighth. Five consecutive pars followed before a bogey at the 14th hole. But he reached the green in two to birdie the par-5 15th before closing with three consecutive pars.

“I'm here,” he said. “I have a chance to win the golf tournament.”

That wouldn’t be possible without making the cut. Add another record to Woods’ remarkable Masters career.

Great Looks, Decent Comfort

Clipper40 - Apr 11, 2024

Slight upgrade over last years model. I like the improved lacing system which seems to hug my foot better. I do think last year's Tour 2 had better cushion or "bounce" to the insole. This year's model feels much firmer to me which is disappointing. I was hoping they would soften up after a few rounds but that doesn't seem to be the case so far. Probably wouldn't have bought 3 colors knowing what I know now. ...

Good Shoe - very stable

Incredible upgrade from the version 2

Ernestos321527017 - Mar 24, 2024

I have three pairs of these, having replaced my two previous Victory Tour 2's that I had for two years. These have much better support and hug my feet better giving me more confidence taking big swings with the driver. Excellent traction and I do not get sore feet at all after a long round of 18 holes. Nike made some great improvements in the looks of this shoe as well. Much better contours and the finish of the leather is a lot more appealing with the pebble finish and perforated venting. A great shoe, my favorites to wear and that is with a collection of 12 golf shoes to choose from. ...
