The 2022 tour de france will take place july 1 to july 24. it will be the  109th edition of race. the grand depart will take place in denmark. .

The 2022 Tour de France Grand Depart  will take place in and around Copenhagen in 2022, with three stages launching the race.

The 2022 Grand Depart is essentially the original 2021 plan before the 2021 start was moved to Brittany owing to COVID-19. So Denmark gets a second shot at it in 2022.

Denmark isn't the only guest country in 2022 - the Tour will also go into Belgium and Switzerland. It'll be the first time since 2017 that 4 countries have featured on the route. 

Climbs are spread across 4 mountain ranges: the Vosges, the Alps (including a foray into Switzerland), the Massif Central and the Pyrenees. In all there are 6  mountain stages, including 5 summit finishes (La Super Planche des Belles Filles, Col du Granon, Alpe d’Huez, Peyragudes and the Hautacam).

The Tour de France race as usual will finish in Paris. For the first time it will coincide with the start of the Tour de France Femmes – see route map and stage overview .

In all the 2022 Tour de France will cover 3328 kilometres of cycling (that's 2067 miles).

Stage 1: friday, july 1  – copenhagen, individual time trial, 13km.

A rare Friday Tour de France start has been programmed in to squeeze in a transfer day from Denmark back to France after the first three stages. 

A  completely  flat route through the streets of Danish capital this should be a free flowing time trial at full speed. Perfect for specialists but some GC candidates will need to hang on to minimise time losses. Expect to see lots of images of  The Little Mermaid and Amalienborg, home to Denmark's royal family.

Stage 2: Saturday, July 2 – Roskilde to Nyborg, 199km

The second stage will be a challenging ride as teams look to avoid getting caught out by crosswinds. GC riders could concede precious seconds very early in the Tour.

There are three Category 4 climbs in quick succession after Veddinge Bakker at 62km, 72km and 84km.The route then takes a scenic path south along the west coast of Zealand. For 50km there will be a strong chances of crosswinds, which could fragment the peloton even before it reaches the day's showcase section: the Great Belt Fixed Link. Not great for GC contenders but wonderful for audiences at home – standby for multiple helicopter shots of this remarkable feat of engineering.

Stage 3: Sunday, July 3 – Velje to Sønderborg, 182km

A day for the breakaway, with a start through the hills of Vejle the route passes by many UNESCO sights before a likely bunch sprint.

Three categorised climbs feature on the stage 3 route – and there is 1 polka dot point available for the first up top each time. The first climb is Koldingvej (1.4km, 4.4%), just 27km into the stage. The second climb is at the 83km mark with Hejlsminde Strand (850m, 4.7%). It's followed by an intermediate sprint near the UNESCO World Heritage site of Christiansfeld. The breakaway will likely make it beyond the third climb, Genner Strand (1.6km, 3.3%). From here, the peloton should give chase as the race heads into Sønderborg.

Transfer day: Monday, July 4

The Danish start means this year sees an unusual 'transfer' day written into the schedule.  

Stage 4: Tuesday, July 5 – Dunkirk to Calais, 172km

A hilly stage between the Flanders and Boulon climbs. This should be a great one for English fans, with access via two ferry ports. 

Stage 5: Wednesday, July 6 – Lille to Wallers Arenberg Porte du Hainaut, 155km

COBBLES! They're back! There will be 19.4km of slips and spills across 11 sectors of the Hell of the North.

Stage 6: Thursday, July 7 – Binche to Longwy, 220km

The Tour returns to  Longwy, where  Peter Sagan won in 2017.  Includes the Côte de Puiventeux (800m, 12.3%) ahead of the final climb.

Stage 7: Friday, July 8 – Tomblaine to La Super Planche des Belles Filles, 176km

Stage 8: Saturday, July 9 – Dole to Lausanne, 186km

Stage 9: Sunday, July 10 – Aigle to Les Chatel Portes du Soleil, 183km

Rest day: monday, july 11 – morzine.

And breathe!

Stage 10: Tuesday, July 12 – Morzine to Megeve, 148km

Morzine and Megeve are no strangers to the Tour de France route. It''ll be another aviation theme today with the final climb to the  Altiport de Megève. There is also a foray across the border into Switzerland.  

Stage 11: Wednesday, July 13 – Albertville to Col du Granon, 149km

What better prelude could there be to Bastille Day? We have the Col du Télégraphe (11.9 km, 7.1%), the Col du Galibier (17.7km, 6.9%) and the Col du Granon (11.3 km, 9.2%) as the GC contenders come to the fore.

Stage 12: Thursday, July 14 Bastille Day - Briancon to Alpe d'Huez, 166km

The 2022 Tour de France's showcase stage is a repeat of the 1986 Alpe d'Huez stage. Col de la Croix de Fer (29km, 5.2%)? Yep.  Alpe d'Huez (13.8 km, 8.1%)? Yep. And on Bastille Day, too.  

Stage 13: Friday, July 15 – Bourg d'Oisans to Saint-Etienne, 193km

The battle for the green jersey should be back on as the Tour comes down from the mountains.

Stage 14: Saturday, July 16 – Saint-Etienne to Mende, 195km

Stage 15: Sunday, July 17 – Rodez to Carcassonne, 200km

Carcassonne again provides a spectacular backdrop for a fast, flat stage.  Another day for the sprinters. Cavendish fans will remember his 34th Tour stage win here in 2021. 

Rest day: Monday, July 18 – Carcassonne 

Stage 16: tuesday, july 19 – carcassonne to foix, 179km.

A near carbon copy of the 2017 Bastille Day stage won by Warren Barguil. Includes two nice climbs, the Port  de Lers (11.4km, 7%) and Mur de Péguère (9.3 km, 7,9%).

Stage 17: Wednesday, July 20 – Saint-Gaudens to  Peyragudes, 130km

A challenging day in te saddle with the Col d'Aspin (12km, 6.5%), the Hourquette d'Ancizan (8.2 km, 5.1%) and the Col de Val Louron-Azet (10.7km, 6.8%) acting as curtain raisers for a final assault on the runway at Peyragudes (8km, 7.8%).

Stage 18: Thursday, July 21 – Lourdes to Hautacam, 143km

Ouch!! The last 3 climbs of the 2022 Tour de France won't be a welcome sight for sore legs. Say hello to the Col d'Aubisque (16.4km, 7.1%), the Col de Spandelles (10.3km, 8.3%) and the mighty Hautacam (13.6km, 7.8%).

Stage 19: Friday, July 22 – Castelnau-Magnoac to Cahors, 189km

This should be a day for the sprinters unless a sneaky breakaway can stay away.

Stage 20: Saturday, July 23 – Lacapelle Marival to Rocamadour, 40km time trial

If the GC is tight, the yellow jersey may again be decided on the penultimate stage, which is – for the third year running – an individual time trial. Includes two little climbs late on the course:  Côte de Magès (1.6km, 4.7%) and Côte de l'Hospitalet (1.5km, 7%).

Stage 21: Sunday, July 24 – Paris La Défense Arena to  Paris Champs-Elysées, 112km 

On a bumper day for cycling in Paris, the Tour de France will roll into town just after the Tour de France Femmes  has rolled out. 

Time bonuses

The first, second and third riders across the line on each stage will receive a time bonus of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, respectively. .

The 2022 Tour de France begins in Copenhagen on Friday 1 July and finishes in Paris on Sunday 24 July, where Slovenian superstar Tadej Pogacar hopes to be wearing yellow and be crowned champion for the third year in a row.

Standing in his way is the sheer strength and depth of Dutch team Jumbo-Visma , who carry multiple threats including Pogacar’s national teammate Primoz Roglic and last year’s Tour runner-up, Jonas Vingegaard. Ineos Grenadiers are without their leading light Egan Bernal, the 2019 champion who is still recovering from injury, but they do have the in-form Geraint Thomas fresh from winning the Tour de Suisse, as well as potential stage winners Adam Yates and Tom Pidcock.

Here is a stage-by-stage look at this year’s route.

Stage 1, Friday 1 July: individual time trial, Copenhagen, 13.2km

The Tour usually begins on Saturday but the transfer from this year’s opening three stages in Copenhagen to northern France means an early rest day and a Friday start to accommodate it. A flat time trial through the streets of Copenhagen opens the show with plenty of intricate tight corners, but given it is only over 13km there shouldn’t be huge time gaps created among the leaders. Even so, the pure climbers will be conscious to minimise losses here.

Stage 2, Saturday 2 July: Roskilde-Nyborg, 202.5km

This long stage could prove pivotal as the peloton traces Denmark’s northern coastline, where crosswinds could split the pack and put a serious dent in the hopes of those on the wrong side. Three categorised climbs feature in the middle of the stage before what is set to be a spectacular finale across the Great Belt Bridge.

Stage 3, Sunday 3 July: Vejle-Sonderborg, 182km

Stage three looks like a classic breakaway day before a bunch sprint finish between the serious fast men, with the likes of Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal), Fabio Jakobsen (Quickstep), Dylan Groenewegen (BikeExchange-Jayco) and Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix) sharpening their elbows as they battle for the win. It closes out the Danish jaunt before a transfer day to France.

Stage 4, Tuesday 5 July: Dunkirk-Calais, 171.5km

The first stage in France couldn’t get much close to Britain, and fans might take the opportunity to nip across the Channel. There are five category four climbs dotted through the stage but nothing sharp enough to deter the sprinters, so long as they can keep up with any early breakaway. Strong winds could be a factor, too.

Stage 5, Wednesday 6 July: Lille-Arenberg Porte du Hainault, 157km

This is the Paris-Roubaix stage, with 19km of cobbles across 11 perilous sections towards the end of a hilly day which are likely to claim a few injuries but could also offer up a chance to attack for those brave enough to try it. A one-day classics master like Mathieu van der Poel could thrive in these kind of conditions.

Stage 6, Thursday 7 July: Binche-Longwy, 220km

A lumpy finish to this stage will knock any sprinters out of contention and offer up the win to anyone brave enough to speed down the descent from the category three Cote de Pulventeux which lurks close to the end of what will be a long day. A day for a breakaway artist, perhaps? Peter Sagan won in Longwy in 2017.

Stage 7, Friday 8 July: Tomblaine-La Planche des Belles Filles, 176.5km

The first mountain-top finish is a modern Tour de France classic: La Planche des Belle Filles, where Chris Froome won in 2012 and Tadej Pogacar took control of the 2020 edition. “The Plank” gets steeper as it rises, finishing on a 24% gradient, and by the end of a gruelling day we will have a good idea of who, if anyone, can challenge Pogacar for his crown.

Stage 8, Saturday 9 July: Dole-Lausanne, 186.5km

Another day for the puncheurs like Van der Poel – and one Julian Alaphilippe would have loved had he been fit for this Tour. The three categorised climbs, the sharp descent from Col de Petra Felix all leading to an uphill finish: this day will have been earmarked in the schedule by those teams chasing hilly stage wins.

Stage 9, Sunday 10 July: Aigle-Chatel, 193km

The first proper mountain stage heads to Switzerland where a couple of category one climbs await. If a break stays clear then someone with strong climbing legs can get the job done, but they will also need good technical skills on the fast descents – Ineos’s Adam Yates could be a contender.

Stage 10, Tuesday 12 July: Morzine-Megeve, 148.5km

After the second rest day, the peloton returns to a familiar route from Morzine to Megeve via another dip into Switzerland which is likely to be contested by a breakaway, with the main GC contenders conserving energy for the intimidating days ahead.

Stage 11, Wednesday 13 July: Albertville-Col du Granon, 152km

An eyewatering route for riders but a mouthwatering day in store for fans, as three tough climbs await at the second half of the stage which could provide a platform in the clouds for a battle between the general classification contenders. The Col du Telegraphe (11.9 km, 7.1%), Col du Galibier (17.7km, 6.9%) and Col du Granon (11.3 km, 9.2%) will drain even strong legs and, if he’s feeling fresh, Pogacar could chose this moment to hurt his rivals. The Galibier marks the highest point of the race at 2,642m, and the first man over will win the Souvenir Henri Desgrange.

Stage 12, Thursday 14 July: Briançon-Alpe d’Huez, 165.5km

On Bastille Day, French fans will be hoping one of their men can deliver on the iconic Alpe d’Huez. Thibaut Pinot and David Gaudu, both of Groupama-FDJ, are the most likely French hopes but any one of the big GC contenders could make their move here on what will be a memorable day.

Stage 13, Friday 15 July, Bourg d’Oisans-Saint Etienne, 193km

A transition from the Alps to the Massif hills which should open opportunities for those who have punching power in the legs as well as a sharp sprint finish for what is a flat run into the line.

Stage 14, Saturday 16 July: Saint Étienne-Mende, 192.5km

Another hilly day but some slightly more demanding climbs should see the stage victory fall into the hands of a fast rider who is not a pure sptinter. A day that is unlikely to shake up the main general classification contenders.

Stage 15, Sunday 17 July: Rodez-Carcassonne, 202.5km

An in-between stage which will be perfectly set up for the sprinters should they still be in the Tour and should they reach the finish in contention. But the various hilly sections could still be enough to keep the fast men at bay and offer the win to a breakaway group.

Stage 16, Tuesday 19 July: Carcassonne-Foix, 178.5km

The first stage of the Pyrenees is not too brutal and may not elicit much action at the top of the general classification. Instead it is likely to serve up a battle for the stage victory which will suit a skilful climber like Romain Bardet, if their GC ambitions allow them to escape up the road from the yellow jersey group.

Stage 17, Wednesday 20 July: Saint Gaudens-Peyragudes, 130km

Four categorised climbs culminate atop Peyragudes where there could be a fight for crucial yellow jersey seconds at the finish. The likes of Pogacar, Thomas and Vingegaard could all win a demanding stage like this one and make their mark on the general classification battle.

Stage 18, Thursday 21 July: Lourdes-Hautacam, 143.2km

Not a long route but three gruelling climbs including the hors categorie Col d’Aubisque and a summit finish. It looks built for another GC battle and the winner here is probably taking hold of the yellow jersey until Paris, if they were not already wearing it.

Stage 19, Friday 22 July: Castelnau-Magnoac-Cahors, 188.5km

A penultimate day for the sprinters, which will be well-earned for those fast men who have made it through the Alps and Pyrenees. The main GC contenders will look to conserve energy and their bodies for the decisive time trial to follow.

Stage 20, Saturday 23 July: Lacapelle Marival-Rocamadour individual time trial, 40.7km

It may all be a formality by this point with a chunky advantage for the overall leader already assured, but if the GC is tight enough then it will all come down to this: 40.7km, a long indivudal time trial with a couple of testing hills. The stage 20 ITT has become a regular feature over the past few years and threw up a dramatic finale in 2020 when Roglic suffered and Pogacar powered to victory. Organisers will hope for more of the same.

Stage 21, Sunday 24 July: Paris La Defense-Champs Elysees, 116km

The procession to the centre of Paris, where the jersey winners will be crowned and the sprinters will get one final contest for the prestige of victory on the Champs-Elysees. Oh how Mark Cavendish would have loved to add to his collection of wins here.

Tour de France 2022: The Route

Stage 1 is a flat individual time trial in Copenhagen. Although featuring some sharp turns, the course suits specialist who can push a big gear.

At 199 kilometres, the 2nd stage is going to be a coastal ride between Roskilde and Nyborg. The first half of the race takes in three short climbs in quick succession – Côte d’Asnæs Indelukke, Côte d’Høve Stræde and Côte de Karup Strandbakke -, while the exposed and 18 kilometres Great Belt Bridge in the finale could have an impact when it’s windy. Yet, a sprint is the most likely outcome.

Same goes for stage 3 . The 182 kilometres route travels from Vejle to Sønderborg. Slightly more undulating, but the highest point of the day says it all. Côte de Genner Strand peaks out at 57 metres – so yes, this one should be for fast finishers also.

The 4th stage starts in Dunkirk to finish in Calais before the 5th stage will be the Tour de France’s take on Paris-Roubaix.

Stage 6 sets off from Wallonia, Belgium, to finish in Longwy, possibly with a punchy finish climb up to the local Citadel.

A hard stage takes place on stage 7 , when the riders travel from Tomblaine to La Planche des Belles Filles. It’s the sixth inclusion of the Vosges climb in the last ten editions – after finishes in 2012, 2014, 2017, 2019 and 2020. It will be the same finish as in 2019 (Dylan Teuns victory), so with an unpaved sector of 1 kilometre after the original climb. This way the ascent totals 7 kilometres at 8.7%.

Stage 8 goes from Dole to Lausanne before stage 9 on the second Sunday entails a race from Aigle to Châtel.

Week 2 The Alps will be on the menu in the second week. The first test is set to be a race from Morzine to Megève, while stage 11 take things up a notch with a finish at the Col du Granon, which is a 12 kilometres climb at 10% on a narrow road.

Stage 12 is this year’s Bastille Day race, which is a perfect opportunity for the French riders to whip their compatriots up into a frenzy of excitement. The stage traverses the Alps to finish in L’Alpe d’Huez. It has been four years since the resort town saw Geraint Thomas sprint to victory ahead of Tom Dumoulin. The famed finish climb with 21 hair pins is 13.8 kilometres long and rises at 8.1%.

A race from Bourg d’Oisans to Saint-Étienne is on the cards as stage 13 , while stage 14 travels to the airport of Mende. The line will be located 1.5 kilometres after a 3 kilometres climb at 10.2%. Stephen Cummings outsmarted Thibaut Pinot and Romain Bardet at this finish in 2015, while Omar Fraile won from the breakaway in 2018.

The 15th stage is a transition stage from Rodez to Carcassonne in the foothills of the Pyrenees.

Week 3 Stage 16 leads to Foix before the pure bred mountain goats will have it their way for two consecutive days. Stage 17 takes in the Col d’Aspin, Hourquette d’Anzican and Col de Val-Louron-Azet before a summit finish in Peyragudes.

Stage 18 sets off from from Lourdes to finish in Hautacam after intermediate climbs up the Col d’Aubisque and Col de Spandelles. The climb to the Hautacam resort is 13.6 kilometres long and averages 7.8%, while the second half is much harder than the first.

Just like in the two recent editions, Le Tour serves an individual time trial on the penultimate day of action. The medieval village of Rocamadour in the Dordogne hosts the finish of the rolling test with a punchy finish.

Copenhagen, cobbles, chronos, and climbs — the 2022 Tour de France route has it all. And more.

Alpe d’Huez is back, and so is a foray across the punishing cobblestones. The “grande boucle” starts in Copenhagen, lands at Dunkirk, and sweeps east into Switzerland, before tackling the Alps and then the Pyrénées.

“It’s a race with a bit of everything,” course designer Thierry Gouvenou told AFP . “The word that best captures how to describe the 2022 route is that it’s complete. But anyone who wins will need to be a complete rider because there are five finishes at high altitude and one of them is at 2,400 meters. You have the entire palate of what it’s possible to provide on a Tour de France.”

The famed 21 switchbacks on l’Alpe d’Huez returns for its 32nd ascent — and for the first time since 2018 — and will be among five uphill mountain finishes in the 2022 Tour.

The Tour’s most famous climb will come on France’s July 14 Bastille Day, and will be an exact replica of the 1986 stage won by Bernard Hinault, where he crossed the line hand-in-hand with Greg LeMond, who went on to become the first American winner of the yellow jersey.

Tour officials confirmed course details Thursday for the 109th edition (July 1-24), which starts in Denmark and ends as it has every year since the 1970s on the Champs-Élysées for its 47th straight year.

Like any modern Tour, there is a mix of stages and terrain.

There will be five mountain-top finales; the first at Planche des Belles Filles, two more in the Alpes, with the Col du Granon and l’Alpe d’Huez, and two in Pyrénées, at Peyragudes and again at Hautacam.

Denmark is the 10th nation to host a foreign “grand départ” for the Tour de France, following the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Spain, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Monaco.

Time trials also play a key role. The Tour has not started with a time trial stage since Geraint Thomas won in Düsseldorf in 2017. A late-race time trial in the final week at a monster 40km — long by modern standards — could decide the final podium.

The treacherous cobbles are back, something that not all of the skinny grand-tour riders like to see. Stage 5 from Lille Métropole to Arenberg Porte du Hainaut will feature 11 cobbled sectors totaling 19.4km, making it a decisive stage, but it will not cross the feared Arenberg Forest sector.

Sprinters will have their chances. This year’s route returns to Carcassonne, where Mark Cavendish made history this past summer with a 34th stage victory, equalling Eddy Merckx’s all-time stage-win record.

A Danish Grand Depart, forays into Belgium and Switzerland, the Arenberg cobbles, the return of Alpe d’Huez, and a long time trial on the penultimate day all feature at the 2022 Tour de France. More summit finishes than sprints, six breakaway days, an additional two punchy uphill finishes, and 53.9km of racing against the clock, makes for one of the most challenging courses in recent years.

Tour de France 2022 – The Essential Preview

All you need to know about the route, contenders, and storylines for the 109th edition of the Grande Boucle

When the route for the 2022 Tour de France was revealed last October, Tadej Pogačar , winner of the past two editions, was thrilled to see such a testing but balanced route. "It's pretty great," said the Slovenian. "From the first stage to the last stage, we have everything: sprints, echelons, cobbles, big climbs, small climbs and time trials.”    

Ten days out from the Grand Départ , Pogačar remains the favourite for the 109th edition of the Tour de France, with all his rivals still trying to find a weakness in his armour and a way to defeat him during the three weeks between Copenhagen and Paris.  

Pogačar's multitude of talents and his ability to race aggressively appear perfectly matched to the route of the 2022 Tour de France.

The first week of racing has been described as a series of Classics, and Pogačar’s victories at Strade Bianche, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and Il Lombardia, along with his aggressive ride and fourth place at this year’s Tour of Flanders, indicate he could gain time on many of his rivals even before the first mountain stage.

The 2022 Tour also returns to La Planche des Belles Filles, where Pogačar cruelly snatched victory from Primož Roglič in 2020, and then heads into the high Alps with tough mountain finishes on the Col du Granon and at L’Alpe d’Huez. There are then further mountain finishes at Peyragudes and Hautacam in the Pyrenees.

The route, however, is bookended by time trials, with a short 13.2km opener in Copenhagen and a rather more pivotal 40.7km test in Rocamadour ahead of the procession to Paris on July 24. 

Only Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Miguel Indurain and Chris Froome have won three consecutive Tours. The 2022 race is arguably Pogačar’s Tour to lose but history has taught us that anything can happen during the three weeks of the Tour de France.

It will be up to Roglič and his Jumbo-Visma co-leader Jonas Vingegaard - along with Ineos Grenadiers' trio of Adam Yates, Dani Martínez and Geraint Thomas - to find a way to defeat Pogačar, while a host of other contenders hope for a miracle.

The Tour de France 2022 Route

The 109th Tour de France starts on July 1 in Copenhagen, Denmark and ends in Paris on Sunday July 24 after 3328km of racing. As Pogačar suggested, the 21 days really do include every aspect of bike racing.  

For the first time since 2017, the Tour begins with a city-centre time trial in the capital, followed by two flat stages across the country from Roskilde to Nyborg and then south from Vejle to Sønderborg. The riders will fly to France on Sunday evening after stage 3 and enjoy an extra rest day before starting the real lap of France.

Copenhagen is arguably the best bike city in the world, where 1.4 million people a day travel by bike - more than in the whole of the USA. The Danish capital will celebrate cycling during the Grand Départ, with a party atmosphere expected for the opening time trial.

The 13.2km city-centre course includes 18 corners and visits the Little Mermaid and other landmarks but Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) will have little time to enjoy the views as he dives through the corners at close to 54km/h. The world time trial champion is the favourite to win and so pull on the first yellow jersey but could be challenged by Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ), Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and other time triallists willing to take risks in the corners.

The overall contenders will also be fighting for every second, with Roglič hoping to gain a psychological advantage on Pogačar, while everyone else tries to limit their losses on the two Slovenians.

The opening road race stages of the Tour are always tense, crash-filled affairs and stage 2 to Nyborg should be no different. The road along the northern coast will be spectacular, as will the final 18km on the Great Belt Fixed Link bridge that connects Zeeland with Funen. If the wind is blowing, then positioning will be vital to avoid crashes in the peloton, while echelons could form on the exposed roads and on the long bridge to the finish.

The 182km third stage should be a calmer affair and a sprint finish, with Fabio Jakobsen (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl), Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal), Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe), Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix), Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies) and their respective lead-out trains to clash in a high-speed finish.

Racing returns on Tuesday July 5 with stage 4 near the northern French coast via an inland loop between Dunkirk and Calais. The 171km stage includes several hills and the Cap Blanc Nez climb on the white cliffs just 10km from the finish.

Things get far more serious for the overall contenders on stage 5, which includes 11 sectors and a total 19.4km of Paris-Roubaix cobbles. They come in the second half of the 153.7km stage and could, like in previous years, cause crashes, significant time gaps, heartbreak and glory for the winner.  

“It can go terribly wrong or it can go okay. You won’t win the Tour here, but you can lose the Tour,” Pogačar predicted after his reconnaissance of the route.

Alps, Pyrenees, and a final TT

After tackling the cobbles a 220km hilly stage in Lorraine lies in wait before the first summit finish of the race – the stage 7 test up to Super Planche des Belles Filles.

La Planche des Belles Filles was first climbed in the 2012 Tour de France when Chris Froome won the stage and Bradley Wiggins took the yellow jersey, and last in 2020 when Pogačar broke Roglič's heart. This year is again a ‘super’ Planche des Belles Filles finish, with the line atop the very peak of the mountain after an additional gravel track.

Two hilly transfer stages during the weekend take the Tour to Lausanne and Aigle in Switzerland before the second Monday rest day and a climb into the high Alps. Stage 10 is short at 148.1km but ends with a 19.2km climb to the summit finish on the Megève runway, where Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) won a stage at the 2020 Critérium du Dauphiné.

Stage 11 is much tougher and includes the spectacular Lacets de Montvernier before the mighty Col du Télégraphe and Col du Galibier. The stage ends for just the second time in Tour history with a mountain finish on the Col du Granon. It is a breathtaking 2413m high and saw the battle royal between Greg Lemond and Bernard Hinault in 1986.

Stage 12 is held on Bastille Day and will be a celebration of France as well as Grand Tour racing. The 165km stage returns to the Col du Galibier via the easier side and then climbs the Croix de Fer before celebrating the 70th anniversary of a finish on L’Alpe d’Huez and  Fausto Coppi’s victory in 1952. The legendary hairpins will surely be packed again with fans from around the world as the likes of Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) and Romain Bardet (Team DSM) fight for a French stage win.

The Tour route heads out of the Alps via Saint-Etienne and a finish on the Mende Plateau, where Steve Cummings famously won on Mandela Day for MTN-Qhubeka in 2015. Another long, hot transfer stage takes the peloton onto Carcassonne for the third rest day, with the Pyrenees in view as the riders try to rest up.  

Stage 16 to Foix in the foothills seems perfect for a breakaway before the back-to-back mountain-top finishes in Peyragudes and then Hautacam. Four passes are packed into the second half of the 129.7km stage 17, which finishes like in 2017 on the spectacular mountain runway finish at Peyragudes that featured in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies.

The final mountain stage of this year’s Tour comes on stage 18, and includes two Hors-Catégorie climbs – the Col d’Aubisque and the finish up to Hautacam - plus the mid-stage Col de Spandelles (10.3km at 8.3%). The 13.6km final climb up to Hautacam will be the last chance for the pure climbers to gain time before Saturday’s 40.7km time trial across the Lot department in Southwestern France.

Who knows who will have survived to this point and who remains in contention for overall victory and podium places. The time trial will decide the final placings, with the 1.5km climb up to the line on time trial bikes the final moment of drama in this year’s race.

As per tradition, the final stage around Paris on Sunday evening is a celebration of cycling, with only the sprinters and their lead-outs focused on the final sprint up the Champs Elysées. This year’s final stage 115km stage is preceded by the first stage of the Tour de France Femmes, marking a symbolic but historic handover as the women’s cycling makes a huge step forward.      

Riders to watch

Tour de France technical director Thierry Gouvenou carefully designs the race route but, as the saying goes, it is the riders who make the race.

We have entered the Pogačar era and the 23-year-old Slovenian could add a third title to his palmarès as he strives to join the greats of the sport with five victories.

Can anyone beat him on a course that seems perfect for him? It will be a tall order but there are plenty of real contenders even in the absence of Egan Bernal and a number of riders who have recently caught the COVID-19 virus.  

The Critérium du Dauphiné and the Tour de Suisse traditionally reveal who is and who is not on form for the Tour de France but modern training methods and altitude training camps are changing riders’ approach to July.

Pogačar opted to spend longer training in Livigno and then dominated the five-day Tour of Slovenia before a week of recovery in the Slovenian mountains. He seems to have worked hard and warned he has improved year on year.

"We’ll see if being as good as in 2021 is enough this year. I feel stronger, I’m leaner, have more power and feel psychologically more confident," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport .  

Pogačar will also have a team to back his ambitions in 2022 after a series of astute signings by UAE Team Emirates. Despite recent COVID-19 cases, the core of the team should include Brandon McNulty , Rafa Majka , Marc Soler and George Bennett , plus key riders for the flat stages.  

Jumbo-Visma arguably have a team to match UAE Team Emirates and have the luxury - or potential headache - of having Roglič and Vingegaard as joint team leaders. That could spark some internal rivalry but also means more options if one of them loses time in the first week.

Roglič seemed to roar back to his best to win the Dauphiné after a knee injury in the spring, while Vingegaard appeared the strongest, on form and equally as ambitious. Both are excellent time triallists and so will be a threat to Pogačar until the very end of the Tour. 

Jumbo-Visma will be chasing stage victories and the green points jersey with Wout van Aert and are convinced they have not bitten off more than they can chew. The Belgian will surely win a number of stages and could even wear the yellow jersey early on, adding to Jumbo-Visma’s success but perhaps also complicating a shot at overall victory. The balance of power at Jumbo-Visma will be one of the stories to watch in July.

Ineos Grenadiers lowered their expectations but not their ambitions after Bernal’s terrible training crash in Colombia earlier this year. They have Dani Martínez, Adam Yates, Tom Pidcock and Geraint Thomas but the Colombian struggled in Switzerland last week, while Yates and Pidcock were hit with COVID-19.  

Thomas seemed set for a domestique role after struggling with injury and COVID-19 during the winter but emerged as the strongest to win the Tour de Suisse. Could it be his year after all? If it isn’t, then a victory by Ganna in the opening time trial and a few days in the yellow will be some kind of consolation.

The spat of COVID-19 cases left a question mark over Aleksandr Vlasov , with Sergio Higuita ready to deputise at Bora-Hansgrohe after finishing runner-up at Suisse. Julian Alaphilippe (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) is also struggling to be at his best after his nasty crash at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. 

Indeed, beyond the battle royal between Pogačar, Roglič and Vingegaard, and Ineos Grenadiers, there is a real opportunity for a podium finish. Ben O’Connor (AG2R-Citröen) emerged to take a deserved fourth place in 2021 and impressed at the Dauphiné, while fellow Australian Jack Haig will lead Bahrain Victorious alongside Damiano Caruso in the absence of Mikel Landa. Enric Mas (Movistar) has been a quietly consistent presence in recent years and is a threat if he can avoid crashes.

A Frenchman has not won the Tour for 40 years and it seems unlikely this year, with Pinot and Bardet targeting stages. David Gaudu leads Groupama-FDJ’s overall hopes but will surely lose time in the time trials.

The sprinters and baroudeurs

Of course, the Tour de France will be more than just a GC battle for the yellow jersey. There are perhaps four or five sprint opportunities and perhaps as many stages suited to breakaways.

Baroudeur and breakaway riders to watch should include Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix), Quinn Simmons (Trek-Segafredo) after his exploits at the Tour de Suisse, Alexis Vuillermoz (TotalEnergies), Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious), plus Bauke Mollema and Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo).  

Van Aert will have to beat pure sprinters such as Jakobsen, Ewan, Philipsen and a resurgent Bennett and Sagan, to win the green jersey because of the big points haul awarded to stage winners.

There will be no place for Mark Cavendish if Jakobsen stays healthy and the Dutch rider can count on Michael Mørkøv and other teammates for a quality and well-executed leadout. Everyone else will have to find more speed and better technique if they want to beat Jakobsen and so win the sprints at the Tour.

Of course, everyone will line up in Copenhagen on July 1, hoping to make it to Paris on July 24 and celebrate being part of the biggest race of the season.

Tour de France 2022 stages list in full: Route map, where today’s stage is and when race will end

After kicking off in copenhagen, this year's tour de france covers 3,328km before coming to an end in paris on sunday 24 july.

The 2022 Tour de France is underway, with this year’s race taking place over 3,328km in just over three weeks.

All eyes will be on whether Tadej Pogacar can secure a third yellow jersey in a row , as he resumes his duel with fellow Slovenian rider Primoz Roglic , while Geraint Thomas will hope to spring a surprise for Team Ineos.

Originally due to host the Grand Depart last year before Covid-19 intervened, 12 months later  Denmark finally got the chance to provide the race’s starting point .

A short time trial in Copenhagen to kick things off, followed by a pair of sprinter-friendly stages before the race heads home – here’s a brief overview of every stage in this year’s Tour de France , which runs from Friday 1 July until Sunday 4 July.

How to watch Tour de France 2022 UK cycling fans will be spoiled for choice when it comes to watching this year’s Tour de France, with extensive coverage being shown on ITV4, Eurosport and GCN+. ITV4  will be showing hours of live racing each day as well as a  daily highlights show at 7pm  (aside from rest days, of course). Tour de France 2022 stages in full

Stage 1 – July 1 – Copenhagen to Copenhagen – 13.2km (ITT)

The opening time trial around Copenhagen is pretty much pan flat, but there are plenty of tight corners to make it a technical challenge as well as a measure of pure power. Denmark’s own Kasper Asgreen will be among the favourites to pull on the first yellow jersey of the race.

Stage 2 – July 2 – Roskilde to Nyborg – 202.5km – Flat

A bunch sprint is expected on stage two as the race heads west along the coastal roads, but there there is one major obstacle hiding from view on the race profile. The Storebaelsbroen is the 18km-long bridge across the Great Belt linking eastern and western Denmark. The possibility of gusting winds on this exposed bridge is high, so teams will have to be on high alert for splits on the road into Nyborg.

Stage 3 – July 3 – Vejle to Sonderborg – 182km – Flat

There should be no barrier to a pure sprint on stage three as the peloton heads south, passing through Asgreen’s home town of Kolding. The three categorised climbs on the route will barely register, and none of them come in the final 60km.

Stage 4 – July 5 – Dunkerque to Calais – 171.5km – Hilly

After a day off for teams to make the journey across to France, the Tour continues with a lumpier day, going west to get east as the route cuts inland through the Pas-de-Calais before returning to the coast. It’s one for the stronger sprinters, but wind could again be a factor in determining how this one plays out.

Stage 5 – July 6 – Lille Metropole to Arenberg Porte du Hainaut – 154km – Hilly

It’s a mini Paris-Roubaix in reverse as the feared cobbles return to the race on stage five. Arenberg is famous for its trench of cobbles through the forest, but do not expect to see that as the Tour has opted for a number of unfamiliar sectors, but unusually challenging ones. It will make for a nervous day all around.

Stage 6 – July 7 – Binche to Longwy – 220km – Hilly

The Tour dips a toe into Belgium for a start in Binche, and what follows on the longest stage of this year’s race is one for the puncheurs – with a series of short climbs on the road through the Ardennes and into Longwy, and a rise of 800 metres at 12.3 per cent comes just before the road up to the finish.

Stage 7 – July 8 – Tomblaine to La Super Planches des Belles Filles – 176.5km – Mountain

In the decade since it made its debut on the Tour, La Planche des Belles Filles has become a favourite and for good reason. This will be the sixth stage finish on the climb since 2012, and the first since Tadej Pogacar dramatically snatched overall victory from Primoz Roglic in the time trial here in 2020. The race will include the unpaved section at the top of the hill first used in 2019.

Stage 8 – July 9 – Dole to Lausanne – 186.5km – Hilly

There’s a nod to those who have led the way out of the pandemic on stage 8 with a start in Dole, hometown of Louis Pasteur, the French chemist who developed the first vaccines some 150 years ago. From there the stage heads into Switzerland where a punchy finish awaits.

Stage 9 – July 10 – Aigle to Chatel les Portes du Soleil – 193km – Mountain

The first mountain passes of the Tour come in the Swiss Alps over the Col des Mosses, the Col de la Croix and the Pas de Morgins before a relatively flat run back over the border to a finish on the approach to the ski station at Portes du Soleil.

Stage 10 – July 12 – Morzine les Portes du Soleil – Megeve – 148.5km – Hilly

After the first proper rest day (the transfer day from Denmark notwithstanding), more Alpine challenges await, though relatively sedate. The final climb up to Megeve is long at 19km but relatively easy at an average gradient of 4.1 per cent with the steepest section, at 7.1 per cent, in the final kilometre.

Stage 11 – July 13 – Albertville to Col du Granon Serre Chevalier – 152km – Mountain

Three of the Tour’s most famous climbs come on a demanding stage 11, with the Col du Telegraphe, Col du Galibier and Col du Granon packed into the second half of the day. A Tour stage has not finished here since 1986, on the day Greg Lemond famously took yellow from Bernard Hinault.

Stage 12 – July 14 – Briancon to Alpe d’Huez – 165.5km – Mountain

The hairpins of Alpe d’Huez await on stage 12, but only after the peloton has doubled back and undone its work of the day before – back over the Galibier and down the Telegraphe before the Col de la Croix de Fer and the Alpe d’Huez make it a trio of hors categorie climbs in one brutal day. In another nod to Lemond and Hinault, this replicates the stage on which they crossed the line hand in hand 36 years ago.

Stage 13 – July 15 – Le Bourg d’Oisans to Saint Etienne – 193km – Flat

After a long wait since Denmark it is hard to imagine the sprint teams will not keep a firm handle on the breakaway and ensure a sprint finish in St Etienne as the peloton shifts away from the Alps.

Stage 14 – July 16 – Saint Etienne to Mende – 192.5km – Hilly

The steep climb up to the airport in Mende has provided some spectacular finishes to Tour stages in recent years, none more so than when Steve Cummings broke away to deliver a first-ever Tour stage win for an African team, MTN-Qhubeka, on Mandela Day in 2015.

Stage 15 – July 17 – Rodez to Carcassonne – 202.5km – Flat

Stages into Carcassonne have usually favoured breakaways but last year Mark Cavendish won here to match Eddy Merckx’s record of 34 Tour victories, and the sprinters will be eyeing another bunch finish ahead of the final rest day.

Stage 16 – July 19 – Carcassonne to Foix – 178.5km – Hilly

The Pyrenees will define the final week but this is only an hors d’oeuvre with a trip into the foothills on the road to Foix, a finish town which has again been kind to breakaways. These might not be on the scale of the mountains to come, but the Mur de Peguere finishes with gradients of 13 and 18 per cent during the final kilometre.

Stage 17 – July 20 – Saint-Gaudens to Peyragudes – 130km – Mountains

There’s room for James Bond references on Stage 17 as the peloton cross the Col d’Aspin, Hourquette d’Anzican and the Col de Val-Louron-Azet on their way to the climb to the airstrip of Peyragudes, made famous in the opening scenes of Tomorrow Never Dies. Romain Bardet was the winner when the peloton last took on this climb, which hits 13 per cent in the finale, in 2017.

Stage 18 – July 21 – Lourdes to Hautacam – 143.5km – Mountain

The last of the mountain tests come on stage 18, with the hors categorie climbs of the Col d’Aubisque and the rise up to Hautacam punctuated by the category one Col de Spandelles. It will be the last chance for the pure climbers to make their mark.

Stage 19 – July 22 – Castelnau-Magnoac to Cahors – 188.5km – Flat

A flat stage looks like one for the sprinters though they might want to think back to stage 19 of last year’s race, when an exhausted bunch allowed a breakaway to stay clear with Matej Mohoric claiming victory.

Stage 20 – July 23 – Lacapelle-Marival to Rocamadour – 40.7km – ITT

The battle for the yellow jersey will be settled with a penultimate day time trial, and a long and challenging one at that. The nearly 41km route is the longest battle against the clock seen in the Tour since 2014, and with two late climbs there could be a twist in the tail.

Stage 21 – July 24 – Paris La Defense Arena – Paris Champs-Elysees – 116km – Flat

Love it or hate it, the largely processional final stage of the Tour lives on (at least for now, if rumours about 2024 are to be believed). Champagne glasses will clink in the suburbs of the capital before the sprinters do battle on the Champs-Elysees and the sun comes down on the 109th Tour de France.

This will be the first Grand Départ in Italy and the 26th that’s taken place abroad  First finale in Nice. Due to the Olympic and Paralympic Games taking place in Paris, the race will not finish in the French capital for the first time.

Two time trials. 25 + 34 = 59km in total, the second of them taking place on the final Monaco>Nice stage. This will be the first time the race has seen a finale of this type for 35 years, the last occasion being the famous Fignon - LeMond duel in 1989.

Apennines (Italy), the Italian and French Alps, Massif Central and Pyrenees will be the mountain ranges on the 2024 Tour route.

The number of countries visited in 2024: Italy, San Marino, Monaco and France. Within France, the race will pass through 7 Regions and 30 departments.

The number of bonus points 8, 5 and 2 bonus seconds go to the first three classified riders, featuring at strategic points along the route (subject to approval by the International Cycling Union)these will have no effect on the points classification. Bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds will be awarded to the first three classified riders at road stage finishes.

The final sprint of the Tour de France always takes place on Paris’ famous avenue. On 18 July, as it has every year since 1975, the last stage of the famous cycling race will end on the Champs-Élysées.

With 3,383 kilometres for the legs to tackle and some 403,000 pedal strokes over three weeks, taking part in the Tour de France is no easy task.

In view of the conclusion of the 21st and final stage of the Grand Boucle , the peloton will give it all they’ve got. Before parading in the capital, the riders will have sweated to climb the 30 passes of the 2021 race, rising in their saddles to pick up momentum and clenching their teeth in the vertiginous descents.

The Champs-Élysées in all its majesty

From Brittany to the Alps, from the Occitanie to the Pyrenees, the riders will have been so focused on their performance that they won’t have soaked up much of the photogenic landscapes of France, broadcast across 100 TV channels.

But by the end of the efforts, what a reward: the majestic Champs-Élysées, with the blue-white-red wake of the famous Patrouille de France fly-past. Nobody else has such a claim on the famous avenue except the French football team, winner of the World Cup in 2018.

Standing on the podium at the bottom of the famous Parisian avenue, with the setting sun at the Arc de Triomphe and Grande Arche de la Défense as a backdrop, the winner of the Tour will have – like all his fellow riders – accomplished the Parisian ritual.

Established in 1975, this involves riding up and down the Champs-Élysées eight times, totalling 1,910 legendary metres separating the obelisk of the Place de la Concorde from the star of the Place Charles-de-Gaulle.

A ride beside the Louvre Pyramid

Seen from above, the spectacle of the peloton winding like a long ribbon decorated around the Arc de Triomphe is magical. From the pavements lining the route of this final sprint, the enthusiasm of the public pushes the riders on through the Quai des Tuileries, Place des Pyramides and Rue de Rivoli in Paris.

Will they take a look as they go past? Not sure. Almost lying on their handlebars, they traditionally take this last stage at a crazy pace, overlooking the cobblestones and prestigious landmarks around. Louis Vuitton, Guerlain, Ladurée and even, recently, the Galeries Lafayette, make up the exclusive backdrop of the peloton’s arrival on the Champs-Élysées.

Texas MS 150 Bike Tour Returns To Aggieland

Texas A&M University will once again serve as the finish line for thousands of cyclists riding in the Texas MS 150 when the 40th annual charity bike tour concludes Sunday on Houston Street between Kyle Field and Aggie Park.

The two-day event benefiting people with multiple sclerosis — a condition that damages the body’s nervous system by eroding the protective coating of nerves — will run April 27-28, with a variety of routes beginning in Houston and Austin before converging in La Grange and again in College Station. Texas A&M Transportation Services is advising drivers to anticipate multiple road closures and potential delays beginning early Sunday as the riders make their way through campus.

A section of Lamar Street starting at the bell tower will be closed to drivers throughout the day, while Houston Street will remain closed from George Bush Drive to Joe Routt Boulevard. Riders will make their way down Olsen Boulevard and Old Main Drive before passing the Memorial Student Center and Kyle Field on their way to the finish line. A map of the route through campus, as well as accompanying road closure and parking information, can be found at transport.tamu.edu/ms150 .

Visitors planning to watch the participants finish are invited to park in one of the three nearby garages: Gene Stallings Boulevard Garage and University Center Garage will both charge a flat $10 entry fee, while West Campus Garage charges an hourly visitor rate. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Bike MS, which encompasses the Texas MS 150 and a variety of other charity rides across the country, traces its roots to 1980, when the first MS 150 was held in Minnesota. Today, it is the largest fundraising cycling series in the world. Participants in this year’s Texas MS 150 have already raised nearly $7 million to fight multiple sclerosis, with an overall fundraising goal of $9.425 million.
