Big inch pipeline.

Marker Title : Big Inch Pipeline City : Longview County : Gregg Year Marker Erected : 1990 Marker Location : Martin Luther King at Pittman St. Marker Text : Before the United States entry into World War II following the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941, ninety-five percent of the crude oil delivered to East Coast refineries was transported by tanker ships. Ninety percent of that oil originated from Texas oil fields. Beginning in February 1942, many U.S. oil tankers en route from the Gulf of Mexico to the East Coast were sunk by German submarines. Recognizing the need to transport oil under safer circumstances, Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes developed a plan for massive overland oil pipeline. Under the auspices of the War Emergency Pipelines, Inc., construction began on the largest pipeline in history up to that time. Measuring twenty-four inches in diameter, the Big Inch pipeline extended from Longview to Norris City, Illinois, and eventually to refineries in the East. The Big Inch pipeline's impact on the war effort was tremendous, enabling the safe and timely transport of oil products vital to the Allies. During the height of wartime service, over 300,000 barrels of oil were delivered each day over the 1,476-mile line. When the war ended, the Big Inch continued in service after conversion to a natural gas pipeline.

Marker Title : Lou Della Crim Home Address : 201 N. Longview St. City : Kilgore County : Gregg Year Marker Erected : 1981 Marker Text : This bungalow style residence was constructed in 1920 for Lou Della (Thompson) Crim (b. 1868), on the former site of the Hearne Hotel. The farm she owned at Laird Hill (4 mi. S) was part of an oil exploration project headed by her son Malcolm, later the first Kilgore mayor, and local financier Ed Bateman. Her property gained national attention on Dec. 28, 1930, when the Bateman-Crim Wildcat Well No. 1, the discovery well for this area of the significant East Texas oil field, blew in there. Area Rangers, including the celebrated Capt. M.T. (Lone Wolf) Gonzaullas, were housed here.

Dean about 1876. After buying the structure in 1881, L.J. Keener (1840-88) attached the two-story west wing. Wiley N. Crim (1865-1937) a cotton ginner and grocer, added porches and enclosed the well when he purchased the house in 1902. His family still owns and occupies it. Oil was discovered on this and nearby Crim property during the boom of the 1930s. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1975

World's Richest Acre

Marker Title : World's Richest Acre Address : Main and Commerce City : Kilgore County : Gregg Year Marker Erected : 1966 Marker Text : Part of fabulous East Texas oil field discovered in 1930. This 1.195-acre tract had first production on June 17, 1937, when the Mrs. Bess Johnson-Adams & Hale No. 1 well was brought in. Developed before well-spacing rules, this block is the most densely drilled tract in the world, with 24 wells on 10 lots owned by six different operators. This acre has produced over two and a half million barrels of crude oil; selling at $1.10 to $3.25 a barrel, it has brought more than five and a half million dollars. A forest of steel derricks for many years stood over the more than 1,000 wells in downtown Kilgore, marking the greatest concentration of oil wells in the history of the world. Dozens of these derricks still dot city's internationally famous skyline. Since 1930, the East Texas oil field has produced nearly four billion barrels of oil. It now has more than 17,000 producing wells, and geologists predict a future of at least 45 years for this "granddaddy of oil fields." Its development has attracted to the area many diversified industries and a progressive citizenship with a high degree of civic pride.

The following brochure was a cooperative effort by the Longview Convention and Visitors Bureau , Longview Chamber of Commerce , Kilgore Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center , Gladewater Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center and the Henderson Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau .

It was brought to our attention and confirmed that the New London School Explosion was on March 18, 1937 not the 19th as mentioned above.

The Driving Tour of Metal Sculptures

Any time of year, visitors can take the Fairbank Driving Tour of Sculpture in the comfort of their vehicles and at their own speed.

Before beginning the driving tour, it’s a good idea to first visit the Oil Museum of Canada in Oil Springs to get an overview of the oil history. The museum also distributes handouts telling you how to tune your car radio to hear the narrative for the driving tour. The radio narrative is available from May 1 to October 1.

Sculptures on the tour visually tell the story of how the Lambton County oilmen produced and shipped the crude through many earlier decades. They depict men as they worked and they bring the past to life. Each sculpture is modelled after a real person and they are grouped like actors in a play. Together they make vignettes of men performing specific tasks.

The setting is the authentic oil field that still uses the technology of the 1860s. The “metal men” and six life-sized horses are the surprising folk art creations of Murray Watson, who owns and operates Watson Welding in Watford, Ontario.

Along the tour, you can hop out of your car and check out exhibits and the barn mural. You may want to bring a camera too.

Checking the Oil Level

Take Kelly Road exit from Oil Museum and turn right.

Loyd Woods, who owned and operated this parcel of land for many years, checks the level of his oil. Once a week, this oil is piped to a central shipping tank. From there it’s trucked to Imperial Oil in Sarnia for refining. Charlie Fairbank bought this piece of property from Woods around 2009.

The Imperial Oil Receiving Station

A team of horses wait patiently while crude is unloaded from an 8-barrel wooden tank to an underground tank with a 100-barrel capacity. Garnet Byers, an oil producer, monitors the shipment.

The receiving station was always an easy distance for horses to draw the heavy load. Sam checks the purity of the oil by taking a sample in a graduated cylinder. Sometimes, not all of the water has been separated from the oil.

Inside the receiving station, a sculpture of Tom Evoy greets the oil producers. He was the receiving station operator, just like his father had been. Sitting at the desk is Henry Wheeler giving the oil producers a receipt for their oil. Henry started as an oilman at Fairbank Oil in 1917 and continued up until 1970.

The receiving station also has a 5-horsepower motor pump for transferring crude oil to the railway cars. (A tank car sits on the former railway right-of-way just west of the museum.) The rail cars would be loaded and shipped to the station on the 12th Line of Enniskillen Township, north of Petrolia and now called LaSalle Road.

Although the railway to Oil Springs closed in 1960, the receiving station continued to be used by the trucking firm Harold Marcus Ltd. to transport the crude to Imperial Oil in Sarnia. In 1974, the receiving station closed, marking the end of an era. This is the only remaining Imperial Oil receiving station. Fairbank Oil has continually shipped crude to Imperial Oil since 1880.

Irv Henderson guides a team of horses and an 8-barrel load of oil. He worked for Fairbank Oil from the 1960s through to the mid-1990s. These tanks were used until about 1975 but by that time, tractors, not horses, pulled the load. The tanks came in various sizes and each one bears a stamp with its capacity. When fully loaded, they would carry about one and a half tons (1,360 kg) of oil.

The Powerhouse or Rig

tour oil field

Photo: Patricia McGee

Originally, the pump in each oil well was powered by an individual steam engine. In 1863, John Henry Fairbank devised the much more economic jerker line system in Oil Springs and it quickly spread throughout the area.

It connected several wells and allowed them to share one central steam engine. When electricity arrived here in 1918, a 5-horsepower motor in the rig replaced steam. This is The James Rig, one of six powerhouses on the property that runs continuously day and night.

Inside the rig, there is a 12-metre belt that loops like a giant rubber band around a bull wheel (2.4 metres in diameter) and the pulley with its motor. As it turns, the bullwheel uses a pinion gear to drive two large spur gears. These gears then turn two cranks, which act like a bicycle pedals, causing the Pitman arms to move back and forth.

From here, the power moves outside to a field wheel where it is shifted horizontally through the jerker line system.

The Underground Storage Tank

(This is visible if you are on foot. When facing the rig door, turn left, and walk to the far side of the building.) The underground oil storage tank just east of the James Rig dates back to the 1880s and is still used today. These deep wooden tanks are made waterproof by packing the outer walls with blue clay. Every month, a big oil tanker operated by Harold Marcus Ltd. removes the load of 210 barrels by attaching a suction hose to the pump on the tanker.

Pumping Oil From Storage Tank

tour oil field

Raymond “Bucky” Mitchell is loading oil from a day tank where the well’s daily production of oil and water is separated; the water drains through a siphon and the oil is stored underground. From here, the oil is transported to the receiving station. Bucky worked at Fairbank Oil from the 1970s to the early 1990s.

Thomas The Tank Engine

To amuse his young sons, Charlie Fairbank decided to transform an oil tank into Thomas the Tank Engine. Renée Ethier, of Petrolia, painted it.

The Three-Pole Derrick

Closed for repairs.

A three-pole derrick used to be erected over each well. In Oil Springs and Petrolia there were hundreds of wells and the landscape used to look like a whole forest of three-pole derricks.

The derricks were used to service each well. Every 18 months, the rods and the pump in the well need to be hauled out, checked and repaired or replaced. Sections of rods and pipe, of about seven meters in length, are uncoupled by the wrencher.

The derrick has pulley at the top connected to a team of horses. As the horses pulled forward, all the rods and pipes were hoisted from the well.

tour oil field

Photo: Al Hayward

Here you see Alex Fairbank, the younger son of Charlie Fairbank and Pat McGee, sitting on the pumpkit wagon with the family dog, Mozart. The pumpkit has all the pulleys, cables and equipment needed to service the well. Albert Baines, of Baines Machine and Repair in Petrolia, climbs the derrick. It is his job to take the pulley and cable to the top of the derrick and hook the pulley into a clevis.

Charlie Fairbank Jr. in the yellow shirt is the elder son of Charlie and Pat and is shown here as the assistant.

In the white shirt holding a wrench is Bob Cochrane, of Cairnlins Resources, who has the job of screwing and unscrewing the pipes and rods as they are removed from the well.

tour oil field

Photo: Larry Cornelis

The teamster directing the horses is David Taylor, the manager of Fairbank Oil Fields. At the west end of this display is foreman Dan Whiting standing on top of an underground storage tank. He is checking to see how much oil it contains by “floating the tank”. He takes a tin can with a string attached, fills the can with oil and lets it sink until it stops at water level. Each 2.5 cm. of oil is five barrels.

Pulling Machines

The portable pulling machines stored at this site began to service the wells in the 1950s after windstorms blew down many of the three-pole derricks in Oil Springs. The blue pulling machine was manufactured by Murray Bradley of Oil Well Supply in Petrolia. It is powered by a “one-lunger”, a single cylinder gas engine. As you drive through the tour of the oil field, you may see other service rigs operating.

Turn left on Gypsie Flats Rd. to continue the tour.

The Modern Pumpjack

This modern pumpjack, of the 1940s, is entirely made of metal, unlike the wooden pumpblocks built by the pioneers. The man checking the well is Elwood Ayrheart who worked at Fairbank Oil during the 1930s and ’40s. He also owned an oil property on the opposite side of Gypsie Flats Road.

The 1862 Shaw Well, Canada’s First Gusher

In the fall of 2007, Charlie Fairbank added three three-pole derricks to the flats where John Shaw hit Canada’s first gusher in 1862. Shaw dug his well to about 21 metres, then, with a spring pole, he bored another 53 metres. The gusher astonished everyone and a vast quantity of oil flowed down Black Creek for four days before the well was brought under control.

This was no ordinary well; it was a Flowing Well. It produced an astonishing 35,000 barrels in 10 months. This is more than Fairbank Oil’s 350 wells produce in an entire year today! Shaw was offered $10,000 for his well and he refused to sell. Atop one of the derricks is Charlie’s brother-in-law, Phil Hein, a former mountain climbing guide.

This is the Bradley Well, which was also an 1862 Flowing Well.

Turn left on to Oil Springs Line and then left again on Duryee Street.

Bullwheel at Duryee St Entrance to Fairbank Oil Fields

To celebrate the 150 th anniversary of Fairbank Oil in 2011, this bullwheel was created for the entrance. It’s a bullwheel just like the ones used for powering the jerker line system to pump the oil. It measures 2.4 metres and was built from white ash by Dave McCann of Alvinston. The blacksmithing was designed and forged by James Wallace of Sharp’s Creek Forge in Goderich.

Sculptures at Duryee St Entrance to Fairbank Oil Fields

At the Duryee Street entrance are sculptures of founder, John Henry Fairbank and his son, Major Charles Fairbank in his World War One uniform, sitting on a horse. The depiction of Major Fairbank was a direct copy of a photograph.

Barn Mural at Fairbank Oil Fields

2558 Duryee St.

tour oil field

Charlie came up with the idea after reading the Joyce Carey novel, The Horse’s Mouth , where a collection of artists and friends assembled to joyfully paint a mural. He decided to gather friends and family to paint this mural together.

Artist Anne Marsh Evans, formerly of Petrolia, converted the hardware store logo into a grid of one-foot squares, sketched the image, and created a “paint by number” wall on the barn. Charlie and friend Vince Lyons set up the grid with string. The scaffolding went up and everyone at the party painted one square.

It was the summer of 1981, exactly 120 years after J.H. Fairbank began Fairbank Oil. When the mural was finished, the gang all sat down to dine on lamb roasted on an open fire.

The image on the barn was copied elsewhere over the years and can be seen painted above the Oil Springs Post Office.

The Pioneer Pumpblocks or Pumpjacks

tour oil field

An oil well is much like a water well; both need a pump to get the liquid to surface. The oil pioneers easily adapted the water pump idea to create the pumpblock, later known as the pumpjack in this area.

Oak and maple were plentiful, so these pumpjacks were easily made. The wooden horizontal walking beam sits atop the wooden Samson post and the two pieces work together like a teeter-totter with a fulcrum. As the walking beam nods up and down, it lifts and lowers a valve assembly 116 metres below. Oil and water enter the valve and get pushed up to the wellhead.

From here, it flows into a pipe and is collected in a tank. Power for the pumpblock comes from the engine in the powerhouse, known as a rig. Numerous pumpblocks can share one engine. The pumpblocks, like the modern pumpjacks, never cease; they operate day in and day out.

1. n. [Drilling]

A work shift of a drilling crew. Drilling operations usually occur around the clock because of the cost to rent a rig . As a result, there are usually two separate crews working twelve-hour tours to keep the operation going. Some companies prefer three eight-hour tours: the daylight tour starts at daylight or 8 a.m.; the graveyard tour is the overnight shift or the shift that begins at midnight. Power Rankings: THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson

Power Rankings

Change Text Size

Editor's note: Will Zalatoris, who was originally leading this week's edition of Power Rankings, withdrew from THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson on Tuesday, April 30th.

The last lap of any race should feature an all-out sprint or pedals to the floor. In more ways than one, that describes the expectation at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson.

A full field of 156 is ready to go at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. For what’s at stake, how the course will test in its fourth year as the host and more can be found beneath the ranking of those projected to contend for the title.

Of course, winning opens the most doors, but the lunge for the latest tape will require a scorer’s mentality throughout the tournament.

After its first two editions as one of the easiest par 72s on the schedule, TPC Craig Ranch transitioned into one of the easiest par 71s last year when the 12th hole was shortened and modified to a par 4. While it evolved from the easiest hole on the course in 2022 to the second-hardest in relation to par a year later, it still didn’t register as among the toughest 20 percent of par 4s played all season. Overall, the field averaged 68.913 on the 7,414-yard test.

As is the case with every shootout, leading the field in scoring opportunities isn’t enough. The putts need to drop as well. TPC Craig Ranch sets a stage for guys to find a groove and ride it across multiple rounds. Decent-sized putting surfaces blanketed with bentgrass are governed to just 11 ½ feet on the Stimpmeter – they need to prepare to withstand quintessential Texas wind – so flagsticks will be in crosshairs more than usual.

Breezes do a fair job of inflating measurements from holes on approach, but the ground game at TPC Craig Ranch is rewarded. Last year, the field’s average in salvaging pars from off greens nearly two-thirds of the time, ranking second-easiest among 58 courses played.

Storms are almost as guaranteed as the wind this week. There’s a reasonable threat during every round. Because the invisible force will flex at times, native Texans always have an edge because they find the strongest pulse. Daytime highs might not touch 80 degrees, so these will not be sweltering conditions. (Wednesday’s Golfbet Insider will include a revisit of the weather.)

The field includes 29 major-championship winners, representing 41 major titles. There are also 39 Olympians in the field, including all three medalists from the Tokyo Games – Nelly Korda (gold), Mone Inami (silver) and Lydia Ko (bronze).

Three spots remain in the Cognizant Founders Cup field, with two filled by the top two finishers at Monday’s Local Qualifying Round . In America’s Biggest Oil Field, the Ground Is Swelling and Buckling

I n a desolate stretch of desert spanning West Texas and New Mexico, drillers are pumping more crude than Kuwait. The oil production is so frenzied that huge swaths of land are literally sinking and heaving.

The land has subsided by as much as 11 inches since 2015 in a prime portion of the Permian Basin, as drillers extract huge amounts of oil and water, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of satellite data. In other areas where drillers dispose of wastewater in underground wells, the land has lifted by as much as 5 inches over the same period.

The constant extraction and injection of liquids has wrought complex geologic changes, which are raising concerns among local communities long supportive of oil and gas. Earthquakes linked to water disposal have rattled residents and prompted state regulators to step in. Some researchers worry that wastewater might end up contaminating scarce drinking-water supplies.

“They’re affecting the geology of the ground, the surface,” Ty Edwards, a Pecos County, Texas, resident who helps manage groundwater in the region, said of oil producers. “That is pretty wild.”

The tumultuous landscape is a direct result of industrial-scale drilling in the Delaware portion of the Permian Basin. Oil production has reached nearly three million barrels of oil a day there, cementing the U.S.’s status as an energy power and fueling the region’s economic engine.

Alongside crude, oil-and-gas companies are extracting gargantuan amounts of subterranean water—in the Delaware, between five and six barrels of water are produced, on average, for every barrel of oil. To dispose of it, they inject billions of barrels of putrid wastewater into underground disposal wells.

Some scientists say the ground displacement, shown in data provided by Earth observation company SkyGeo, could impact infrastructure such as roads. But what frackers and researchers are most concerned about are the forces pushing the ground up.

Environmental groups say Texas regulators’ oversight of the industry is falling short and that it is time for the federal government to intervene.

Oil executives, meanwhile, say the issue of water disposal is having an impact on their bottom line, driving up the costs for new wells. They also fear that, if left unmanaged, it could dent local support for their activities.

“Produced water management is probably one of the, if not the biggest, challenge in the Permian,” said Cody Comiskey, an earth-science adviser at Chevron.

Oil and gas activities have long reshaped the landscape of energy-rich locales. In the last century, crude production caused the ground in and around California’s Port of Long Beach to sink as much as 29 feet, causing billions in today’s dollars in damages and repairs to public and private property. More recently, the Netherlands began shutting Europe’s biggest natural-gas field after earthquakes tied to gas extraction led to a public outcry.

When the shale boom breathed new air into the Delaware about 10 years ago, the basin produced under 500,000 barrels of oil a day, according to analytics firm Enverus. Today, companies there churn out roughly a quarter of all U.S. crude production.

As a result, the volume of briny, polluted water that companies have to handle has skyrocketed. In 2013, companies discarded about 382 million barrels of water, according to water analytics firm B3 Insight. Last year, they injected about 3.4 billion barrels of water down disposal wells. That is about as much water as New York City consumes in roughly five months.

Frackers inject most of this water down wells that reach about a mile under the surface, which is convenient and relatively cheap. Drilling clusters of injection wells means companies don’t have to build expensive pipelines to link disposal sites together. But concentrated volumes of water increase pressure underground, which then makes it more difficult for companies to drill down through those levels to shale rocks.

Companies are having to make significant adjustments because of the pressure changes. Occidental Petroleum, for instance, is building more robust wells to account for increased pressure, said Jeff Simmons, the company’s chief petrotechnical officer. One way Occidental is making wells sturdier is by adding strings of casing to reinforce the wells’ structure.

Company executives didn’t specify what the cost of re-engineering was. When Pioneer Natural Resources, another producer, in 2017 reported encountering pressure changes in the Midland portion of the Permian, it said it was spending about an additional $300,000 to $400,000 per well.

Mounting pressure also limits how much water companies can dispose of and forces them to use more energy to push fluids through, executives said.

Companies have also been injecting a smaller portion of the unwanted water well below crude reservoirs, at deeper depths of around 3 miles. Deep injection wells are much more expensive than shallow ones, but they allow frackers to dump more water and do so in a way that doesn’t affect subsequent drilling. But there is a catch: The water can cause deep-rooted faults to slip, creating earthquakes.

The number of earthquakes in the Permian with magnitudes greater than 2.5 jumped from 42 in 2017 to 671 in 2022, according to B3 Insight. In late 2022, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake in Reeves County, Texas, sent tremors felt as far as Dallas, El Paso and San Antonio, where it damaged a historical building.

Texas regulators have imposed restrictions on injection volumes in the region, and the number of magnitude-3.5 earthquakes and higher has come down. Local communities are gearing up for more shakes. In Pecos City, a city of about 13,000 in West Texas, around 145 municipal employees will receive earthquake-preparedness training, said City Manager Charles Lino.

“That is the necessity we have to live with,” he said.

Drillers said they are allocating more cash and brain power to navigate pressure and seismicity issues. Chevron has formalized a team with a budget that conducts reservoir studies and looks at ways to reuse more wastewater, among other things, said Chevron’s Comiskey.

A growing concern for residents and scientists is that wastewater could migrate into the aging, unplugged wells that litter the Permian by the thousands and contaminate drinking-water supplies or shoot to the surface, where the fluids could damage ranchland.

Advocacy groups have asked the federal government to review how the state is regulating water injection in the region. The Environmental Protection Agency has said it would review the groups’ petition.

With shrinking options to discard wastewater, crude producers have to get creative. Some are looking for lower-risk formations to inject water into and ways to treat water so it can be reused for agriculture. Whether these efforts will pass regulatory muster or how much they will cost remains unclear.

“There’s just no silver bullet,” Comiskey said.

How many LIV golfers in PGA Championship field? And how did they qualify?

tour oil field

After another strong showing in a major, LIV Golf hopes to continue that streak this month at the PGA Championship.

The Saudi-backed golf league placed three golfers in the top 10 at the Masters while five missed the cut.

Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith tied for sixth, and Tyrrell Hatton was T9 at Augusta. They atoned for other high profile LIV golfers who struggled, such as Phil Mickelson (T43), Brooks Koepka (T45) and Jon Rahm (T45); as well five who missed the cut, including Sergio Garcia, Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson.

Many of them now are preparing for the season's second major, May 16-19 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville. That list includes Koepka, the three-time PGA Championship winner and defending champion.

LIV will have nine golfers in the field, four fewer than the Masters. Here is how they qualified, some multiple ways.

LIV golfers in PGA Championship field

Bryson DeChambeau: Winner one of five most recent U.S. Opens (2020); one of low 15 scores (T4) in previous PGA Championship.

Tyrrell Hatton: One of low 15 scores (T15) in previous PGA Championship; played in most recent Ryder Cup and top 100 of Official World Golf Ranking; top 70 PGA Championship points list.

Dustin Johnson: Winner one of five most recent Masters (2020).

Martin Kaymer: Former PGA Champion (2010).

Brooks Koepka: Former PGA Champion (2023, 2019, 2018); played in most recent Ryder Cup and top 100 of Official World Golf Ranking; top 70 in PGA Championship points list.

Phil Mickelson: Former PGA Champion (2021, 2005).

Joaquin Niemann: Special invite.

Jon Rahm: Winner one of five most recent U.S. Opens (2021); winner one of five most recent Masters (2023); played in most recent Ryder Cup and top 100 of Official World Golf Ranking.

More: Tiger Woods' daughter, Sam, has 'negative connotation' of golf, but excels in soccer, track

Cameron Smith: Winner one of five most recent Open Championships (2022); winner one of three most recent Players Championships (2022); one of low 15 scores (T9) in previous PGA Championship.

Kaymer is only LIV golfer in 2024 PGA Championship field who did not play in 2024 Masters.

LIV golfers who played in 2024 Masters but do not qualify for 2024 PGA Championship: Garcia, Adrian Meronk, Patrick Reed, Charl Schwartzel, Watson.

2024 PGA Championship odds, field: Surprising PGA picks from golf model that has won 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the pga championship 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks for valhalla golf club.

tour oil field

The 2024 PGA Championship will mark the fourth time that the major will take place at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, tying for the second-most all-time. It will only trail Southern Hills (five) in Tulsa, Okla., and past PGA Championships at Valhalla have been down-to-the-wire affairs. The three previous versions were decided by either a playoff or one stroke, with Rory McIlroy (2014) and Tiger Woods (2000) victorious at the last two at Valhalla. As past PGA champions, they automatically qualify for the PGA Championship 2024, as do past winners such as Jason Day, Collin Morikawa and Phil Mickelson.

The 2024 PGA Championship will begin on Thursday, May 16, with two-time Masters champion Scottie Scheffler atop the 2024 PGA Championship odds. The World No. 1 is the 4-1 favorite, with Jon Rahm (9-1) the only other golfer with single-digit odds. Reigning champion Brooks Koepka is 16-1, while two-time PGA champion Justin Thomas is a 33-1 longshot in the 2024 PGA Championship field. Before locking in any 2024 PGA Championship picks of your own, entering PGA DFS lineups on sites like DraftKings or FanDuel, or finalizing PGA Championship props and PGA Championship Pick Six entries, be sure to see the 2024 PGA Championship golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $10,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now with the PGA Championship 2024 field taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2024 PGA Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 PGA Championship: Brooks Koepka, a three-time PGA champion and one of the favorites, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top 10. Koepka has five major tournament wins on his resume and a reputation for elevating his level of play in big events. However, his last two major starts haven't gone well as he was 45th at the Masters, which followed a 64th-place finish at last year's Open Championship. He's failed to shoot par in each of his last seven rounds at major tournaments.

After notching three tournament wins in 2023, including last year's PGA Championship, it has been tough sledding for Koepka in 2024. He has no victories, or even top-fives, and across his six starts, he has three times as many finishes outside the top 25 (three) as he has inside the top 10 (one). He played Valhalla at the 2014 PGA Championship and finished in a tie for 15th place, but that placement ranks just eighth out of his 11 career PGA Championship starts.

Another surprise: Collin Morikawa, a 25-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. A two-time major winner, Morikawa won the 2020 PGA Championship in his debut at the tournament and in just his second major appearance. He's since established himself as one of the game's elite since then, as over his last 15 majors, he's placed in the top 10 in over half of them (eight). That includes finishing eighth at the 2021 PGA Championship, and the 27-year-old is coming off a third-place finish at this year's Masters.

Morikawa was among the top five on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: tee-to-green and strokes gained: approach the green last year, illustrating his potential as a great ball-striker. Those metrics are down this year, but he still ranks in the top 10 in driving accuracy percentage, which will come in handy on the tree-lined fairways at Valhalla. Additionally, Morikawa is clutch on the greens and ranks in the top 10 in conversion percentage whenever he has a chance to putt for a birdie (or better). Considering he's not even among the 10 golfers with the shortest golf odds for this event, Morikawa is a steal at 25-1 for 2024 PGA Championship bets, according to the model.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 PGA Championship picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 25-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 PGA Championship, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the PGA Championship 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected PGA Championship leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 11 golf majors, including the last three Masters .
