What To Expect On An Ecuador Amazon Tour With La Selva Lodge

Thinking of taking a tour in the Amazon rainforest? Think you need to fly into Brazil or maybe Peru to make it happen?

The truth is, the Amazon jungle is a giant ecosystem running through 9 countries in South America, and, though Brazil accounts for the largest share of it, it’s not the only way to experience the Amazon rainforest. Like more and more people are doing, we chose to see it while visiting Ecuador.

Honestly, the Amazon isn’t the first thing I think of when someone says Ecuador. My first thought of Ecuador is of the famed Galapagos Islands and that’s a shame, because Ecuador is a wonderful, accessible way to visit the mighty Amazon rain forest.

During our Amazon jungle tour in Ecuador, we saw almost everything we’d dreamed of in the Amazon, including monkeys, bids, piranha, plus plenty of exotic insects and creepy crawlies galore.

We visited the Amazon as a family of four, with our two kids, ages eight and eleven, so we wanted to stay somewhere comfortable for the kids (and honestly, comfortable for us as well).

We wanted to be able to do all the activities we dreamed of and still have a clean shower at the end of the day. We also wanted good food and a comfortable bed, so we chose to stay three nights/four days at the highly rated La Selva Lodge (see reviews on TripAdvisor here ). La Selva included transportation, all activities, and gourmet meals, but did not include airfare from Ecuador’s capital city, Quito (though that can be arranged).

Click here to see La Selva Lodge prices and availability.

First, I’ll tell you all about our Ecuador Amazon Tour. Spoiler – it includes blow darts, monkeys, jungle hikes, and even piranhas! If you’re interested in checking out the food and our room, scroll down or  click here  to skip directly to our review of La Selva Lodge Ecuador.

Our Ecuador Amazon Tour

Our four night Amazon tour at La Selva Lodge definitely kept us busy from the very beginning, when we arrived at the lodge in a dugout canoe  (you can read our journey into the Amazon here ) via tranquil Heron Lake (it’s also known as Garzacocha Lake).

La Selva Lodge is located deep in the jungle, about an hour plane ride from Quito to the small town of Coca (also called Puerto Francisco de Orellana), followed by an almost two hour journey on a motorized canoe, a 10 minute walk through the rain forest, and then a half hour paddle in a dugout canoe down a small creek and then across Heron Lake to the Lodge.

La Selva itself is located deep in the Amazon basin, on a tranquil lake that’s connected to the Amazon River system. The Lodge is a stone’s throw from Yasuni National Park , which is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. At La Selva Amazon Eco Lodge, they take care of all the excursions with in-house guides so there’s no need to book another company for activities.

During our  stay, we hiked through the surrounding rainforest, fished for piranha, spotted birds from a 100 foot treetop canopy tower, took a night paddle and even took a night hike through the awakening jungle. When we were done, we relaxed in our fully equipped cabana. We saw more wildlife than I thought possible, including monkeys, birds, black caimans, butterflies, amphibians, insects, and tarantulas.

Tip! We visited independently, but you can also visit La Selva Ecolodge as part of an all inclusive La Selva Lodge tour with G Adventures. The G Adventures tour includes flights from Quito and other transportation, as well as the standard La Selva package of accommodation, activities and gourmet meals.  See prices and availability on G Adventures .

All of our jungle activities were guided by both an English speaking guide (the incredibly knowledgeable Daniel) and a local native guide (patient and helpful Medardo, who grew up a stone’s throw away from the Lodge in a local tribe). As a family with two kids, we wanted to make sure that we were in good hands in the jungle. Both Daniel and Medardo were attentive, knowledgeable, careful, and a lot of fun.

With two kids in tow, fishing for piranha was high on our must do list.

Our native guide Medardo prepared traditional bamboo fishing poles, and loaded us up with raw meat as bait, and we set out in a dugout canoe.

It was definitely unnerving to see how the raw meat bait disappeared from our hooks within a matter of seconds!

In the end, we ended up reeling in several piranha, most of them less than six inches long, but a few larger than our heads (eek!). Our guide, Daniel, even caught a catfish.

One of our day trips took us to a local Amazon tribes village (the Pilchi village). We spent most of the afternoon there, learning about their way of life, eating food prepared by the local women, and learning about how they use local plants and animals. Stay tuned, as we’ll be writing an entire new article about our time at the local Amazon tribe!

While the whole trip was memorable, our son Cole especially loved the chance to try his hand at using an authentic blow dart gun. Traditionally, the men of the Pilchi tribe used the poison tipped blow dart, to take down wildlife to eat. Our darts, of course, weren’t poisonous but we did enjoy testing out our aim regardless.

Medardo, our local guide, was taught how to use the blow dart by his father who was one of the last of his tribe to use the blow dart as an everyday hunting tool. They had very strict rules on who could use a blow dart and when, so it was a special treat that we had an official expert with us on our trip.

Another one of the highlights of staying at La Selva was climbing to the top of their own 10 story observation tower, deep in the heart of the jungle.

On our first attempt to climb the tower, we were surprised by a booming thunderstorm during our walk. Luckily, Daniel and Medardo had thought to equip us in comfy rubber boots and rain ponchos. They even had boots and ponchos to fit the kids, though if your little one is younger than Jordan (age eight), you may want to bring a raincoat for them. The smallest poncho was pretty big on her.

We chose not to climb the tower that morning because of possible high winds and lightning, and instead went back later in the day when the storm had eased however it highlighted the fact that when you’re in the rainforest, sometimes it’s going to rain.

Despite its location deep in the jungle, the observation walk was only about 10 minutes away from the lodge. When we made it back when the weather cleared, we were greeted with this view from the top of the observation tower. It felt like we could see all the way back to Quito!

During all of our hikes and activities, it was only the four of us and our two guides. This is the standard at La Selva Lodge, with one or two guides per group of four or five people.

That ratio meant that we got a personalized introduction to the rain forest, which was perfect as our English speaking naturalist guide Daniel was patient with the kids’ questions and quick to change our schedule if the weather or an opportunity presented itself.

For the most part, we walked on raised platforms and paths through the jungle, although some of the trails were on dirt. All of the trails were well marked, though I was glad to have guides along to guide us home!

Parrot Clay Lick

One of the most unique experiences we had at La Selva was visiting the exposed clay riverbank where brightly colored parrots gather to eat clay every day. The parrot clay lick is inside Yasuni National Park along the fast and large Napo River. The clay apparently neutralizes toxins in many of the nuts and foods the birds eat and the three species of parrot common to the area gather in large groups in the mornings to digest the clay.

From La Selva, visiting the clay lick is a 10 minute motorized canoe ride as well as the 15 minute paddle up the lake and down the creek to get to La Selva’s Rio Napo dock.

We did have to wait about 15 minutes before the birds appeared, but we saw well over 30 parrots. The majority of the parrots we saw were green Mealy Amazon Parrots, but the Blue-headed Parrot and Yellow-crowned Amazon Parrot also visit the salt lick and they could be seen in the surrounding trees.

If you’re really lucky, you’ll see hundreds of parrots at one time.

We spent a lot of time in the water on our Amazon tour in Ecuador. La Selva’s lake Heron is connected to the mighty Napo River by a small creek and many tributaries. We paddled along on the water, watching monkeys scurry overhead, birds flying through the trees, and even saw large black caiman crocodiles lounging along the shore.

In addition to scheduled and guided excursions like jungle hikes, piranha fishing and visiting the local indigenous community, the lodge offers many independent activities. If you’re so inclined, you can take one of the canoes or kayaks out on the lake, grab a massage, or even enjoy a yoga class on the water.

Charles was the only one brave enough (or is it crazy enough? I’m not sure) to do this, but you can even swim off the dock at La Selva. You’ll be swimming with caimans, electric eels and piranhas, so use caution!

We all had a fantastic time during our family yoga class. Daphne, our yoga instructor, gives personalized or group classes in the Gazebo overlooking the lake. Our class was aimed to entertain the kids, but you can also get classes customized to your needs.

Wildlife in the Ecuadorian Amazon

La Selva Lodge is perched beside Yasuni National Park, which is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, and home to millions of species of plants, birds, insects and mammals.

We were lucky enough to see several monkey species in the park, including black capuchin monkeys, white-fronted capuchin monkeys, spider monkeys, and howler monkeys.

Yasuni is home to at least 596 bird species . We didn’t quite see all 596 species, but we did see so many that I lost track. Our favorite place to bird watch was up in the lodge’s observation platform above the restaurant and lounge. From there, we could look over the lake and into trees in the surrounding jungle.

The lodge had some quality binoculars and equipment for bird watching, which made it fun and easy. The trees were honestly teeming with birds like toucans, parrots and the comical hoatzin (which locals call the stinky turkey).

This is truly the wild, so experiencing and seeing animals is really up to nature. La Selva was fantastic about getting us out to see local wildlife, and took us on canoe rides, and nature walks, including a night walk through the jungle. Our english speaking naturalist, Daniel, was very informative on each species we saw and Medardo, our native guide, knew exactly how to close we could get without scaring it away or being in danger.

During our night walk, we saw a tailless scorpion, two tarantulas (one in a tree, and another in a ground burrow), and plenty of frogs and other invertebrates.

If creepy crawlies aren’t your thing, we also saw a tiny (and adorable) little opossum, plenty of birds, and a troupe of Capuchin monkeys that night. The monkeys were a bit feisty, throwing stuff at us from above, including bean pods they’d just eaten. They would eat the sweet white fluff around the beans, and then throw down the bean and pod.

Ecuador’s Yasuní National Park is also home to countless plant species. Everywhere we looked, the jungle was covered in lush green, and a profusion of flowers, ferns, and orchids.

At home in Canada, we only see the bird of paradise flower in high-end, expensive florists. Here in the jungle in Ecuador, they grew wild almost everywhere.

During our visit to the local Pilchi tribe’s village, the village women showed us crops they grew for food, as well as local jungle plants shamans use for medicine.

A Review of La Selva Lodge

Just being in the Amazon itself is a bit of a trial, as it can get oppressively humid and hot, and plenty of activity can quickly lead to heatstroke. We had our children with us, so we wanted to stay someplace where we could be comfortable, with a cool place to rest, as well as decent food. La Selva delivered that in spades, and more.

From the start, when the La Selva team met us in the Quito airport with boarding passes already printed out, helped check our luggage, and handed us a gift for each of the kids, we knew we were in good hands.

The La Selva Lodge is a big place, with private bungalows dotting spacious, landscaped grounds, surrounded by jungle on all sides.

From our cabin, it was a two minute walk to the secluded spa with its outdoor Jacuzzi, and a short 30 second hop to the main building with a large restaurant, viewing area, lounge and dock.

We had a family suite, with a king bed in one one room and two double beds in another. Outside, we had a private porch, hammock and a sunken tub in the deck. The rooms had a lot of nice little extras, from a dry box to keep electronics free of moisture, to mosquito netting over all the beds. There was also a washroom with double sinks and warm showers.

Meals at La Selva

Our stay at La Selva included all meals and snacks. Dinner, supper and breakfast are served at specific hours, but there are light snacks available from friendly Marcello, the bartender, any time of day.

Breakfast our first day started things off right, with a delicious fruit plate, cheese and meat plate, tiny corn tamales in corn husks, coffee, tart orange juice, pineapple juice and an offer of eggs.

We especially loved the chef’s willingness to accommodate us, as me and the kids are vegetarians. They were happy to whip up kid-friendly veggie meals, and asked us what we’d like best.

They also offered up great fish and meat meals which Charles was thankful for after early days and long nights hiking and going on adventures.

They also offered some great desserts which everyone was thankful for.

Weather: We went in early March, and found it warm and with humidity never dropping below 80% any time. When it rained, which it did at some point every day, the humidity got even higher. I set out some pants to dry from a walk one night, and in the morning they were wetter from the overnight humidity than they’d been the day before. Damp everything is pretty standard Amazon rainforest fare so pack accordingly. That said, the staff at La Selva does offer a laundry service.

Bugs: Well, it is the Amazon jungle, so there are bugs. Surprisingly, we found that there weren’t a lot of mosquitoes when we visited in March. Charles was surprised that there were way fewer mosquitoes in the Amazon jungle than in his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba however it’s still a good idea to bring mosquito repellent, especially on the night walk. We also didn’t find any creepy crawlies in our room, much to our eight year old daughter’s relief and each bed has a netting that we made sure we used.

WiFi: Yes, there is WiFi at the lodge. The WiFi is via satellite, so it’s enough to check email, but don’t count on streaming Netflix or uploading your photos with La Selva Lodge Ecuador WiFi.

Hot water: There are hot water showers. We did have our hot water go out once, but we told the front desk, and they had it up and running in a couple of hours.

Drinking water: La Selva gets its water from an underground well. There’s filtered drinking water available at all times in the main lounge, and they bring a pitcher of filtered water to your room every day. Guests are also given personal refillable water bottles to use while they stay at the lodge.

Location:  The La Selva Amazon Ecolodge is in Ecuador’s Amazon region, bordering Yasuni National Park and the mighty Napo River. To get to it you need to get to Coca where they’ll take you down the Rio Napo River for a few hours to their private docks and then you need to take a canoe up a small creek and across the Garzacocha (Heron) Lake.

Ecuador Amazon Tour one of the best adventure tour of the world. nice post with beautiful images……..

I would never dare to swim with the piranhas either! Never knew that the Amazon forest extends to Ecuador. Learning something new every day!

Looks like fun and I would love to do sm yoga and explore those amazon forests.

Wow. This would be a dream adventure. I will pin this for later because I want to go to Ecuador someday! My mom went on a mission trip but she didn’t get to explore the Amazon!

Is it feasible to do this tour through La Selva and then travel to the Galapagos? Who can help me plan this?

Hi Gabrielle, we did both trips and had a great time doing it. The biggest costs for us were getting to Ecuador in the first place. Though I will admit that visiting the Galapagos cheaply isn’t easy. Most people go with a set itinerary so they know their costs beforehand.

If you like La Selva, the owners of La Selva Ecolodge own a few boats that operate in the Galapagos Islands as well as they recently bought The Red Mangrove in Santa Cruz. You can check out The Red Mangrove site here . We actually stayed at The Red Mangrove ourselves however that was before it was bought out. You can read about our Red Mangrove experience in Santa Cruz here though I imagine that place has just gotten better since La Selva bought it.

You can check out the La Selva Galapagos cruises here . They also provide Amazon and Galapagos combined trips here which might be what you’re after.

It’s not hard to book your own flights online as well as book your own hotel or cruise with whichever company you prefer however if you don’t want to book it all yourself you can contact La Selva directly and they can help out or you can contact pretty much any decent travel agent in Ecuador or abroad and they should be able to set you up for a small fee. Safe travels!

Most Popular Ecuador Trips & Tours

Due to fairly stable seasonal weather conditions in Ecuador, travelers can enjoy year-round travel to the country. Some areas have better weather at certain times of the year, but it is always a good time to travel to Ecuador. Ecuador has a surprising variety of climates. The weather can be very localized and tends to change quickly because of the country’s unique geography. Located on the Equator, Ecuador is divided into four main regions: the Andes, the Amazon, the Coast, and the Galapagos Islands. Within these four regions of this small country, roughly the size of Colorado, elements of all four seasons can occur in a single day. The Andes (Highlands) Visitors can experience the Andean Highlands year-round, though June to September and late November to mid-January tend to be the drier months. February to May and October to mid-November are considered the rainier season. During the rainier months, one will find warm sunny weather in the morning followed by almost daily showers in the afternoon. Temperatures show little variance throughout the year with averages in the 60s during the day and 50s at night, though sunny days may get into the 70s and cooler nights may drop into the 40s. Despite these averages, it is common to have rainy streaks in the dry season and nice sunny weather in the wet season. It is best to come prepared for both rain and sun, as visitors will likely run into both during any month of the year. Warm days and cool nights are normal so packing layers is essential. The Amazon The Amazon basin is what you would expect of a tropical rainforest: wet, hot and humid. January marks the beginning of the less rainy period, which extends through March. Calling this the dry season would be a misnomer as it still rains quite frequently. March through July tends to be rainier than the first two months of the year, with July tending to be the rainiest. August through December is known as the fluctuation season. During this time, it is nearly impossible to predict weather patterns. One minute could be hot and sunny with clear blue skies and then the next minute a heavy downpour could begin. Temperatures year-round range in the 80s (27-33°C) and rain, sometimes even cool rainstorms, can be expected most days in the afternoon, as the Amazon basin is truly a rainforest. Any time of year is great to visit the Ecuadorian Amazon despite the level of rain. Contrary to what one may think, the months with higher averages of rainfall are great times to visit. Higher levels of rain increase fruit production, which results in more activity from monkeys and other fruit eating species. The Amazon is an unpredictable environment from both a weather and wildlife standpoint. The best approach for visitors to have an excellent Amazonian experience is to come prepared for the unexpected and to have an open mind! The Coast On coast, the dry season runs from about June to December with a temperature drop to the high 70s. The garua, a damp mist, has a tendency to cast itself over the coastline and the sun. The sun can disappear for three months at a time. Then in January to June, temperatures go up and despite the occasional heavy rain, the days will be bright and sunny. The Galapagos The great weather of the Galapagos Islands makes them a fantastic destination for travel year-round. Every month of the year is a good time to enjoy a tour of the region. The Galapagos Islands have a subtropical climate that is almost completely determined by sea currents. Although most believe the Galapagos to be a very hot destination, the cool water currents in the area keep the climate fairly temperate year-round. The mild variations in weather from month to month result in an overall climate of warm days, cool nights and low humidity. Anytime is a great time to travel to the Galapagos; while visiting one can expect to see plenty of sunshine, blue skies and a possible chance of light rain.

I have traveled many places in the world but the trip put together by Southern Explorations may well be the best. The amazing biology we saw on the Galapagos and in the Amazon, wonderful guides both on the Eclipse and at Sacha lodge, excellent food, and great coordination of the different parts of the trip made for an incredible journey.   -Marilyn Parsons, USA (Galapagos Island Cruise & Amazon)

We had an outstanding time on our Galapagos Adventure + stay at the Sacha Lodge. Everything ran seamlessly and our guides were fun and knowledgeable. It was the perfect mix of activity, education, and relaxation! We also highly recommend the Sacha Lodge. - Eric & Leah Monson, USA (Galapagos Island Land & Amazon)

La Selva Eco-Lodge & Retreat Deals

tour selva ecuador

La Selva Amazon Lodge is a premier lodge within the Yasuní Biosphere Reserve on Yasuní National Park’s edge. The lakefront lodge blends rustic beauty with modern luxury and caters to travelers of all ages who seek a luxury retreat in the heart of the Amazon.

Life at La Selva Amazon Ecolodge

La Selva Lodge is situated at a remote location on the Napo River’s north bank overlooking Garzacocha Lagoon. The scenic journey to the lodge from the airport in Quito will take four to five hours by plane, canoe, and foot. When you arrive, you will be completely immersed in the sights, sounds, and tastes on the Amazon.

The lodge has 19 suites over three categories, including family suites that feature plunge pools and hammocks. The lodge’s petite size ensures you have an intimate experience, away from the crowds of the typical tourist hubs. Yet, the lodge is big on hospitality and sophistication. Light wood tones and airy design inspired by local traditions give a chic look while also keeping the unairconditioned lodge cool, even on the warmest days. During your stay, you will indulge in decadent Ecuadorian and international cuisine.

The use of locally-sourced vegetables, fruits, and fresh juices creates an authentic gastronomy experience while also providing economic support for the local communities.

Excursions from La Selva Ecolodge Ecuador

La Selva Amazon Ecolodge has everything you need for a deep dive into Amazon exploration, including rain boots and ponchos. Onsite, climb the 115-foot observation for picturesque views of the area. For there, you will be able to see the geophagy, colloquially referred to as clay licks, where hundreds of parrots and macaws come to feed.

You will also be able to hike on six trails weaving through the rainforest. During your hikes, expert guides will point out Azteca ants, strangler figs, walking palms, and other fascinating plants and animals. Then, take a nighttime canoe trip to spot caimans, owls, and bats. You may also visit the local Kichwa community for a hands-on experience with the local ways of life.

Wellness in the wilderness

While your time in the Amazon will be a journey of exploration, the rainforest also has the power to nurture your body and soul. Still your mind and strengthen your body during morning and evening yoga sessions, which are appropriate for beginner and advanced practitioners, on the jetty overlooking the lake. An open-air spa allows you to breathe in the fresh air while receiving rejuvenating treatments in total privacy. Reflexology treatments, targeted massages, and hot-stone massages are ideal for recuperating after days of hiking.

Other treatments incorporate the native plants of the Amazon for a spa experience you won’t have anywhere else. Book the Silk Bath for a honey and brown sugar scrub followed by a soak in a combination of spices and essences, including ishpingo from a native Ecuadorian tree. For softer skin and a brighter complexion, try the Natural Yucca Mask, which acts as a natural moisturizer and provides elasticity.

Everyone from birdwatchers to yogis will find things to love at La Selva Amazon Ecolodge. Whether it’s the junior naturist program for children over five years of age, or a kayak trip to look for monkeys, there is always something new to experience. What are you looking forward to most?

The manager will be waiting to greet you with a refreshing juice, snacks and a short briefing with general information about your stay at La Selva.

One of the Naturalist Guides will give you the basic info about the tropical rainforest, the Amazon, and how La Selva operates. The idea is to begin your activities with background knowledge of the amazing place you have just arrived at.

Embark on a trail, given the Spanish name of the famous Strangler fig (Ficus sp), one of many remarkable trees that you can find on this short walk. Mahogany trees over 400 years old can be seen and your guides will share their knowledge of the flora and fauna. Due to the time of day, there is great natural light and the diurnal and nocturnal animals are beginning their daily transitional activities.

Tonight at the bar, you can find snacks and order cocktails from the bartender. Or, feel free to help yourself with limitless tea and coffee. Dinner will be served in the evening. Find your seat and get comfortable while our waiters serve you each course.

La Selva Eco-Lodge & Retreat (GG) - Lodge Program

Observation Tower, Trails & Night Ride

AM : Today breakfast is early as we rise before the sun to catch the best part of the day. After a 20-minute walk, the observation tower comes into sight. This amazing construction will allow you to climb 120 ft above the forest. Your Naturalist and Native guides will help you spot the colorful birds of the Amazon, maybe even certain primates.

On the way back from the tower there is the option of taking the Tucaneta Trail where your Native Guide can show you some of the medicinal plants still in use today and your Naturalist Guide will provide you with interesting info on the ecology and natural history of the Amazon.

PM:  Enjoy lunch and re-fueling for the afternoon before we head out to begin our Charapa Trail. This trail goes on for about an hour beginning at the lodge and ending by the edge of the lagoon. It is a great loop where different mammals, monkeys and birds can be seen that come closer to the lagoon at this time looking for food. It is also perfect for witnessing an Amazonian sunset from the water in the canoe.

Before dinner this evening, with the help of a spotlight your guides will take you around the lagoon via canoe looking for nighttime wildlife. This is also a great opportunity for star gazing! Dinner will be served when you return to the lodge. Feel free to take some time to freshen up in your room beforehand.

La Selva Eco-Lodge & Retreat (GG) - Lodge Program

Parrot Clay Lick, Mandi Wasi & Coto Trail

AM : Today you will make your way back to the Napo River and take a motorized canoe ride to the clay licks, one of the most fascinating displays of the wild world. Hundreds of parrots and parakeets gather here to eat the mineral-rich soil, an important part of their diet. Binoculars are essential to capture the moment.

After the clay licks, we will take you to experience our Cultural Activity. An Amazonian Kichua woman will welcome you at their community centre to share their life of the Kichua’s in the Amazon. This is special because it is part of the Amazon you do not find on the maps and provides the special and unique opportunity to get to learn more about the people of the Amazon.

PM : After lunch, we embark on a fantastic walk that takes off from the lodge to the edge of the Garzacocha Lagoon. In the afternoon the light from the sun will come from behind most of the time, making this walk an amazing experience and the perfect opportunity to enjoy the beauty of this amazing forest. Groups of black-mantled tamarin monkeys can be spotted on this walk and some of our groups have even seen tapirs too.

Your Naturalist Guide is going to explain all the different creatures that can be found and our Native Guide is going to explain about all the different creatures that can be found and our Native Guide will show you some of the medical plants that they have been using for thousands of years. A canoe ride back to the lodge makes a great ending for this activity.

La Selva Eco-Lodge & Retreat (GG) - Lodge Program

AM : Per your briefing the night before, you will have an early wake-up call, breakfast and departure from the lodge. The lodge staff will assist you with your checked luggage and the motorized canoe ride will head upstream back to Coca, where our representatives will take you to the airport to help you with your checked luggage and boarding passes.

5 Day - Lodge Program

Mandi Forest, Garzacocha Lagoon, Ceiba Trail & Night Trail

AM:  Not all lodges can offer an exotic trip into the deep wilderness like where you are headed on this adventure. We will walk through the amazing Mandi forest for around 3 to 4 hours beginning at our main dock back at the Napo River. In this type of ecosystem, there are chances to find some of the biggest mammals of the rainforest, like peccaries or wild pigs, deer or tapir.

Eventually, we will reach the lagoon of Mandi Cocha. Here we get into a fibreglass canoe and paddle through the amazing Igapo Forest. This is a temporary flooded black water forest. Here we might see different species of birds and some of our extra lucky guests may encounter the elusive giant otter.

PM:  After lunch today we visit the Garzacocha Lagoon and Ceiba Trail. This lagoon is one of the most beautiful in all the Ecuadorian Amazon. During this trip is when we have higher chances of spotting different species of monkeys and birds. Sometimes huge groups of squirrel monkeys join families of capuchin monkeys to look for food. Howler monkeys also like to spend the late afternoon around the lagoon and you can hear their tremendous calls echoing on the lake. We may even see the famous pygmy marmoset, which is the smallest monkey in the world. More wildlife that can be seen include the Hoatzin, a famous bird with a very strange appearance and adaptations, toucans, macaws, and many other species of birds.

This evening you have the option of a night walk, where we give you the chance to enjoy the creatures and sounds of the Amazon Jungle at night. Sometimes we can see amazing things during this activity. Make sure that you bring a flashlight for this fantastic experience. Our manager will provide you with all the necessary information about your departure procedure for the next morning before you enjoy your final dinner at the lodge.

La Selva EcoLodge & Retreat

tour selva ecuador

La Selva EcoLodge & Retreat is located 60 miles from Coca down the Napo River in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon. La Selva (“the Jungle” in Spanish) has been in operation for over 25 years and is a highly respected jungle lodge in South America. Thatch-roofed cabanas, each with private bathrooms and hot water, are located one mile from the river on a hillside overlooking a lake.

La Selva EcoLodge & Retreat Review

AdventureSmith Explorations’ La Selva EcoLodge & Retreat review includes a detailed description and photo gallery. Our South America experts have stayed at La Selva Amazon EcoLodge firsthand and can help compare the La Selva Lodge with other adventure lodging  and Ecuador land tours .

Choose the La Selva EcoLodge & Retreat if you’re seeking a quiet respite off the beaten path with plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities and a focus on sustainability. Highlights of a remodel in 2021 included 12 state-of-the-art eco staterooms and a remodel of the four family and three scenic staterooms, bringing the lodge’s capacity to a total of 50 guests. La Selva Lodge has the largest accommodations of any Ecuador rainforest lodge. In addition, an updated restaurant and bar area provides incredible views of Garzacocha Lake. La Selva Ecuador offers 24-hour electricity and water, powered by solar energy.

Arrival at La Selva Lodge

A stay at La Selva Amazon EcoLodge & Spa is a special experience from the start, combining a flight from Quito, motorized canoe ride, short walk through the jungle and a ride in a non-motorized canoe. Luggage is handled by representatives throughout the journey. In Quito, a representative meets travelers at the airport (or arranges a hotel pick up) to provide boarding passes and make luggage arrangements for the next flight to Coca. Flights to Coca are available every day except Sunday. In Coca, a new representative ushers guests to the dock. A motorized canoe then takes travelers down the Napo River (approximately 2.5 hours). A short jungle walk follows this trip to finally board a paddle canoe to cross Garzacocha Lagoon before arriving at the lodge. Upon arrival to La Selva’s main dock, the staff will help carry luggage (carry-on baggage as well as camera gear will be the guest’s responsibility). A complimentary signature drink and introduction to the bilingual naturalist guide welcomes guests to the lodge.

Common Areas at La Selva Lodge

La Selva EcoLodge & Retreat offers many inviting spaces to relax. The sunny dock features lounge chairs, umbrellas for those who wish to recline and a jumping-off point for swimming and kayaking when a cool down is desired. Special spa treatments are also available as a private experience on the dock. Nature trails flow through the property, connecting cabanas, an open-air spa pavilion, the main lodge and various wildlife viewing areas. The lodge itself overlooks Lake Garzacocha, with open-air seating complete with instruments to watch for wildlife in and around the waters below. The lodge also offers a refurbished dining room with al fresco seating and a fully-stocked bar.

Here is the Observation Deck, offering views from directly above the dining room:

Sustainability at La Selva Lodge

La Selva EcoLodge strives to embody sustainable tourism. By employing members of the local Pilchi community, La Selva has reduced the amount of hunting, fishing and tree cutting that are common professions. New engines with low emissions and less fuel consumption are now used for La Selva Lodge’s boats on the rivers. On Lake Garzacocha the use of any engine is prohibited. The lodge staff aims to purchase 80% of the food served on site from local communities and ensures the majority of products used are natural and fresh from the surrounding area. Structures were consciously constructed using bamboo taken from sustainable plantations nearby. All-natural amenities and biodegradable products are provided for showers and baths, and waste water is cleaned and then conserved in a natural pond.

Dining at La Selva Lodge

The spacious and open dining room and lounge, with panoramic views of Lake Garzacocha, creates an inviting atmosphere. La Selva EcoLodge’s restaurant provides gourmet organic food using local ingredients from its on-site garden, such as herbs, fruits and vegetables. Dishes include exquisite international favorites as well as native flavors. The kitchen specializes in vegetarian and raw food and can accommodate special diets (including vegan, gluten free and kosher) upon request. Friendly bartenders serve guests’ requests and tropical drinks special to La Selva Lodge; all can be enjoyed at the fully-stocked bar overlooking the lake.

Here is the restaurant, lounge and bar on site:

Activities at La Selva Lodge

A variety of self-guided and naturalist-guided hikes by day and night reveal the vast biodiversity of the region. Seek out the thousands of plants and animals that may be within range of the lodge and lagoon, including orchids, ferns, monkeys, caimans, jaguars, turtles, marmosets, frogs and many birds. Kayaks, swimming, self-guided trails and a butterfly garden are also available. An optional visit to the Kichwa community provides the chance to interact with native people and learn about their way of life. La Selva EcoLodge & Retreat also features a guided jungle camping immersion with all equipment included. Guests are provided with a rain poncho and rubber boots for the duration of their stay.

Birdwatching is often a highlight of any stay at La Selva EcoLodge. The lodge is located in the Yasuní Biosphere Reserve, which has been shown by ornithological studies to contain more species of birds than any other region in Ecuador and more than both the entire USA and Canada combined. Clay licks that draw parrots and other birds create ground-level opportunities to watch birds. The spacious 125-foot rainforest canopy observation tower provides an eye-level view of possible tanagers, parrots, toucans, parakeets, woodpeckers, hoatzins and countless other species. Special birdwatching tours are available.

For rejuvenation, yoga classes on the dock are offered, complete with complimentary mats. La Selva’s Amazon spa offers innovative and traditionally-crafted treatments on-site, tailored to stimulate circulation and increase relaxation. Customized therapies include reflexology, exfoliation, hot stone massage and various types of baths and body massage, including children’s massage. Young visitors can take advantage of the Junior Naturalist Program, with activities like learning to paddle a canoe, practicing non-impactful wilderness travel and learning about rainforest protection practices from community members.

The spa at La Selva EcoLodge:

Community Service at La Selva Lodge

La Selva Amazon Lodge supports local native communities in various ways. The monthly stipend given to the Pilchi community lends support to their schools and community projects, including health care, transportation and sanitary facilities. The lodge staff, comprised of many community members, closely collaborates with locals on management issues like organic farming. La Selva Lodge in Ecuador helped purchase a motorized canoe with a low-emission engine for the local community to use. The nonprofit organization affiliated with La Selva, Fundación Bolivar Education, sends volunteers to the community to aid in conservation projects centered around health care and sanitation, among others. Guests of the lodge can participate in the Pack for a Purpose program, electing to bring and donate various supplies for distribution at the local schools.

La Selva EcoLodge Reviews from Our Travelers

Everything surpassed our expectations/hopes. The accommodations were great, the transfers were seamless. The guides in both the Amazon and Galapagos were amazing. Their breadth of knowledge and excitement of sharing it with us made the trip extra special.

La Selva was beautiful and remote. Staff was VERY helpful and friendly. Superior guide, Paul. Food 5 star. Very interesting wildlife and vegetation. Loved dealing with Arielle.

The birding was fantastic, made better by the extremely helpful bird guide. We have birded in Central America, Indonesia, Africa and all over the US and we think he was the best bird guide we have ever had! We had an amazing time on this trip! Additionally, information provided by AdventureSmith was perfect! Taylor, our Adventure Specialist, was always available for any questions and very responsive to our requests.

Overall - fantastic! La Selva Lodge was amazing - the service was individualized and tailored to our group.

La Selva Lodge was excellent. The accommodations were quite nice. The food was unbelievably good. The native guide and naturalist were knowledgeable and personable.

Everything surpassed our expectations/hopes. The accommodations were great, the transfers were seamless. The guides in both the Amazon and Galapagos were amazing. Their breadth of knowledge and excitement of sharing it with us made the trip extra special. Everyone we met was friendly and easy to get along with, which was nice because we were traveling on our own. There was always someone to talk to and eat a meal with. Also, most of the other participants had traveled quite a bit and were interesting to talk to.

Accommodations Review

La Selva is a beautiful accommodation in the middle of the jungle. Everyone on staff was friendly and always willing to answer questions and be helpful. La Pinta was extremely comfortable. We liked the size of the ship- I think there were 40 guests on board.  We spent a lot of time on the sun deck when we weren't doing excursions. All the public spaces were comfortable and spacious. Our room was also very comfortable.

Meals Review

All of the meals were good.

Crew & Guides Review

La Selva:  We had Omar as our principal leader and Darwin as our Local Guides. I can't imagine having better guides. They were both incredibly knowledgable as well as kind and enthusiastic. We only had 3-4 people in our group, so it felt like a very personalized experience. Omar was a walking encyclopedia of the plants and their practical uses in the jungle. We could tell that this is his passion. He loves everything about the Amazon. We learned about animal behaviors- including the caiman's tears being a source of salt for butterflies, then actually saw butterflies fluttering around a caiman's eyes. Darwin was always walking ahead and making sure the trail was safe for passage and he also knew a lot about the plants and animals. He was incredibly good at spotting wildlife that we never would have seen without him.

La Pinta: There were 10 guests per guide and 2 excursions everyday. We usually ended up on an excursion with either Daniel or Fatima. They both live in the Galapagos so are very knowledgeable which they shared freely. I loved that even though they probably see these animals every day and know their behaviors very well, they still got excited when guiding us. Daniel was very good at demonstrating the Blue Footed Boobie mating dance- which we got to see later.

Itinerary Review

In the Amazon we stayed at La Selva lodge and loved being in such a remote location and seeing the diversity of wildlife. We especially loved seeing the monkeys in the trees all around us, the trip to the Clay Salt Lick and the indigenous community tour. The heat and humidity in the amazon was somewhat intense. But, that said, we chose a lodge without A/C to have a more authentic experience and would choose it again.

In the Galapagos we especially loved seeing the mating dance of the Blue Footed Boobies, snorkeling with baby sea lions swimming all around us and watching sea turtles hatch and head into the sea. Those were all awe inspiring.

Transportation Review

We had a lot of transfers because our trip included 3 different locations. Every single time, a guide was there making sure everything went smoothly. It was our first time in South America and I was nervous about those logistics. Going to the Galapagos from Quito was quite complicated because of the extra restrictions. I'm not sure we would have figured it out on our own, with our limited Spanish.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Arielle Lightcap was our Adventure Specialist and from the beginning of the planning process she was exceptional. She gave us lots of information to help make choices, was very prompt in communicating with us, explained what would happen and when so that there were no surprises. Our original plan was to go to  Machu Picchu and the Galapagos, but because of pandemic restrictions and possible border changes we were uncomfortable with  going to 2 countries. Arielle was very flexible and helped us come up with a different itinerary involving only Ecuador- the Amazon and Galapagos. It was really a very stress-free trip on our part. We loved using AdventureSmith and will definitely use them again in the future. We've recommended the agency to several people.

Traveler Advice

Be ready for an adventure more than a relaxing vacation. Since the locations we chose were all about the wildlife, our schedule had to follow theirs. In the Amazon we got up at 5:30 am, had breakfast at 6 and started our daily excursion at 6:30 am when the jungle was waking up. It was similar in the Galapagos, except those excursions started at 8:30 am. We came home tired but with memories that we never would have dreamed of!

La Selva was beautiful and remote. Staff was VERY helpful and friendly. Superior guide, Paul. Food 5 star. Very interesting wildlife and vegetation. Most unusual, night hike through jungle. La Selva is all jungle. VERY hot and humid with no space air conditioned. If clients are highly sensitive to this, It could negatively affect the experience. Not very buggy, surprisingly, very few mosquitoes at this time of year. Some fitness useful, but all activities only mild to moderate difficulty. Longest hike no more than 2 miles.

5 star accommodations for a remote jungle site. NO air conditioned areas in entire resort.

Very good with dietary restrictions.

Paul was excellent. Very friendly and enthusiastic. Great English skills. Would love to have him on a re-visit.

All worked well. Useful to have all fees, etc. paid in advance.

Loved dealing with Arielle.

Consult with agent as to what you really are looking for as to type of trip and accommodation.

We had an amazing time on this trip! All of the reservations were as stated and everything was on time. The lodge was beautiful and the food was absolutely awesome! The staff at the lodge was friendly and efficient. The bird guide was one of the BEST we have ever had, and we have birded in many places around the world! We were very happy with the accommodations, including the stay in Copa. Everyone we met was pleasant and the trip was very smooth.

How they were able to provide the style and comfort in a jungle lodge was absolutely amazing! The beds were comfortable, the accommodations were beautiful and the wildlife was everywhere!

5 star meals on every occasion. They even made a birthday cake for my wife's birthday! It was hard to believe the quality of food made in the middle of the Amazon rain forest!

Our bird guide, Rodrigo, was FANTASTIC! He was highly knowledgeable of all the wildlife in the area and could find birds by habitat, sight and sound. He was knowledgeable about every species and was very enthusiastic in providing the best experience for us! We have birded in Central America, Indonesia, Africa and all over the US and we think he was the best bird guide we have ever had! He was so well spoken and a pleasure to be around!

The birding was fantastic, made better by the extremely helpful bird guide. His knowledge was fantastic and he spoke English very well! The number of species of birds was quite amazing and the lodge itself was beautiful with the best staff!

The information provided by AdventureSmith was perfect! Everything was organized well, and there were no issues on anything arranged through them. All the information provided was spot on! The surprise gift the week before leaving was also a pleasant surprise. There were absolutely NO hiccups on any of the trip parts! We were very happy with the service and plan top use them again soon! We just wanted to thank you for the great adventure. Taylor, our Adventure Specialist, was always available for any questions and very responsive to our requests. Even while the trip was in progress and we had travel issues from the airlines that were not part of the AdventureSmith package, she made contact and kept us informed! Thank you so much! We have already started forming a group trip to the Galapagos with family and friends!

Follow all of the advice given by AdventureSmith. The insects are not a big issue and although there are a few bugs at the lodge, it is extremely clean and the food is awesome. They will also cater to dietary needs.

The food was great - but a little fancy. I actually like the buffet's better than most of the fancy dinners. Except that the appetizers were amazing! I loved the focus on local Ecuadoran food.

Our guides were incredible at finding wildlife and preparing us for excursions. Rodrigo and local guide, Henry at La Selva were fantastic!  Really amazing at finding and identifying wildlife.  And passionate about protecting the rainforest.

The food at La Selva was outstanding...especially considering everything has to be canoed into the lodge.

Edwin and Jose at La Selva were extremely kind and knowledgeable. Jose (our native guide) had an amazing eye....he made our piranha fishing expedition very enjoyable.

We enjoyed every place we went.

I highly recommend a private guide at La Selva. We were able to set our own pace (really nice for my mom who is older) and not worry about slowing others down. We were able to see things at our own pace.

Respect the environment

The Amazon rainforest is one of the most important ecosystems and is home to the greatest biodiversity on the planet. Its hydrographic basin represents the largest river system on earth, covering a total of 40 percent of the South American continent and transports 20 percent of the world's fresh water. The jungle is also the ancestral home of more than 200 indigenous cultures; people who have demonstrated sophisticated ecological management of their jungle territories. The Amazon is key in the fight against climate change and is in danger of disappearing due to the growth of the world economy with the unsustainable demand for finite and infinite resources: wood, minerals and hydrocarbons.

La Selva Lodge

La Selva Lodge

– Shelagh and Richard, Canada

La Selva Lodge is an award-winning Amazon Rainforest lodge in the Ecuadorian jungle and is regarded as the premier eco-lodge in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

From a comfortable setting, on our La Selva Lodge Amazon tour you will head into the rainforest on guided excursions to see animals and plants of the most wildlife-rich place on Earth. Our guests regularly see parrots, monkeys, toucans, caimans, frogs and much, much more.

Enjoy very comfortable guest suites, delicious cuisine, and incredible wildlife. La Selva Lodge overlooks a beautiful Amazon lake, so you can enjoy some fantastic views and even see wildlife from the lodge itself. As the lodge is also a spa, you can relax after your rainforest tours with a massage and spa treatment.

Accommodation

La Selva Lodge has a total of 18 spacious suites with some offering a beautiful view of Lake Garzacocha and some offering family sized accommodation for couples who have brought children.

The lodge’s Scenic and Superior suites have private showers, private balconies and offer panoramic views. The family suites have extra large bathrooms, hammocks and offer a tub on a private porch.

- Nancy, USA

We have used native homes to inspire the design of our suites. The design allows free flowing air and shade to keep the rooms cool of a day.

Your bathroom includes amenities such as hairdryers and shampoo, conditioner, soap and a sewing kit. Hot showers, ceiling fans and electricity are provided in each suite.

At La Selva Lodge, we are deeply committed to sustainable ecotourism and keeping our impact on the environment to a minimum. Therefore, we do not have air conditioners in the rooms. However, there are large windows and a ceiling fan which keeps the air in the suites circulating.

We think you’ll find that the rooms are quite comfortable. As an added bonus, the fans are fairly quiet, allowing you to hear the soothing sounds of the jungle at night.

- Maria, USA

Of a day, you and your group will head out into the Amazon Rainforest led by your English-speaking naturalist guide. You will explore the lagoon and trails in the rainforest, which is all included in the lodge rate.

Birdwatching is an exceptional activity at La Selva Lodge and the area surrounding the lodge has been found by ornithological studies to contain more bird species than any other area in Ecuador. Birdwatchers come from all over the world to see tanagers, parrots, toucans, parakeets, woodpeckers, hoatzins and countless other species. Special birdwatching tours are available.

Our Native Guides and English-Speaking Naturalists will guide you through an extensive trail system filled with wildlife in what many consider the most biologically-diverse lodge in the entire Amazon. One walk through the virgin forests and you’ll already appreciate the Giant Kapok Tree (Ceiba Pentandra) and the Strangler Fig Tree (Ficus sp), among the most representatives, along with some other plant and animal species that can be seen.

At La Selva, we believe in responsible eco-tourism and mutually beneficial relationships with local communities. Our guests have the unique opportunity to interact with local wildlife as well as local people in a responsible, sustainable way.

Note : all of these activities are completely included in the price. There is no extra charge for any of them!

Strangler Trail : This trail gets its name from the famous strangler fig (Ficus Aurea, in Spanish “Matapalo”), a remarkable plant which grows up around another tree, choking it in the process (don’t worry: the strangler figs aren’t interested in people!) This educational hike is one that our guides often like to start with, because there are many interesting plants and animals that are found along the trail.

Chaguamango Trail : This trail begins at the lodge, winds through the dense rainforest and ends up at the lagoon, where the canoe will be waiting for you. You’ll see the usual plants, frogs, snakes and insects along the trail, and if you’re lucky, a troop of squirrel monkeys will pass overhead! A favorite of our guests.

Rainforest Canopy Observation Tower : It’s a whole different world up there! The rainforest canopy is an ecosystem in and of itself. High up in the treetops, birds rule. Built around a massive, centuries-old tree, our 120 foot high (37 meters) observation tower and deck offer a 360° view for world-class birdwatching (and monkey-watching) any time of the day. As an added bonus, there are two trails from the lodge to the tower: a 20 minute “express route” and a two-hour “scenic route.” Both trails are great for seeing animals and medicinal plants used by locals for centuries. One of our can’t-miss activities!

Charapa Trail : the Charapa Trail goes from the butterfly farm along a winding path that most groups can walk in about an hour and a half. At the end of the trail, you arrive at the lagoon, where the canoe will be waiting to return you to the lodge or explore Lake Garzacocha. You can never tell what sorts of birds, reptiles, frogs or monkeys you might see on this trail, so keep your eyes peeled! If you’ll lucky, you’ll catch a magnificent Amazon sunset over the lagoon on your way back.

Parrot Clay Lick : Because of their diet, Amazonian parrots frequently need to eat salty clay to aid their digestion. There are some of these famous “clay licks” near the lodge and they are a favorite of our guests. On a good day, you can see hundreds of brightly-colored birds fluttering about the clay and squawking loudly all the while.

Community Cultural Visit : Several indigenous communities live near the La Selva Amazon Ecolodge. Our guides like to take our guests there, because the communities are always excited to receive visitors and our guests enjoy seeing another way of life – the Amazon way. You might visit a local home or school, see some of the projects the locals are working on, try local foods and drinks (roasted wood grubs, anyone?) and even shoot a blow dart gun! A highlight comes at the end of the tour, when guests have the opportunity to purchase hand-made handicraft souvenirs directly from the people of the community.

Marmoset Trail : The part of the jungle where our lodge is located also happens to be the habitat of the rare Pygmy Marmoset, the smallest monkey in the world. There is a family of them located not far from the lodge and a canoe ride and short walk will get you to a place where they are often, but not always, seen. The “Leoncillos,” or “Little Lions” as they’re known to locals, is a bucket-list sort of sighting for many of our guests.

Canoe Rides in the Creeks and Garzacocha Lagoon : Bodies of water are often the best places to see wildlife in the Yasuní Biosphere Reserve. Our traditional, hand-paddled canoes are the travel medium of choice on the lagoon and along the creeks that come in and out of it. You might see a paiche (a massive fish that occasionally likes to snap at the paddles), snakes (including the legendary anaconda), bats, any number of birds and monkeys, and much, much more. Relaxing and fun, many guests tell us that the canoe rides were their favorite part of their stay with us.

Sacha Hugra Trail : Our longest and most challenging trail is also our most spectacular one. The Sacha Hugra trail goes for four to five hours through some of the only surviving original primary rainforest in the area. It’s your best chance to see some of the larger, more spectacular wildlife. The trees, ancient and magnificent, tower above the rainforest floor like nowhere else: you can tell in the air that this place is old and timeless. If guests find it challenging or are pressed for time, they can choose to do only a portion of the hike.

Night Walk : Many of the most interesting species near the lodge are nocturnal and can only be seen at night. Grab your flashlight and join your guide and fellow travelers on a brief walk to see toads, frogs, insects, bats, scorpions and other varmints that are invisible by day. A favorite of kids!

Night Canoe Ride : Your guides will take out a canoe and a spotlight onto the lagoon to try to spot some fantastic wildlife, including caimans, snakes, bats, owls and anything else lurking around the lagoon in the darkness. They’ll try for a clear, cloudless night if possible, because the stargazing from the center of the lake in the Amazon night is truly memorable.

Fishing : Imagine updating your online profile with a photo of yourself…holding a piranha you just caught off our dock! Every day around two o’clock, the native guides will help you catch and release these legendary fish right in front of the lodge. Explorer Kayaks: Many of our guests can’t get enough of the wildlife around our lagoon, Lake Garzacocha, so we keep some kayaks handy near the dock. You can take off on your own exploration adventure whenever you wish!

Swimming in the Lagoon : Want to take a cooling dip in our freshwater lagoon? Feel free to suit up and jump in whenever you want: all we ask is that you let us know so we can have someone close by to keep an eye on you.

Combination Tours: Combining a trip to La Selva with a visit to the legendary Galapagos Islands results in a truly unique and extraordinary wildlife tour. Contact our representatives to combine your rainforest tour with a trip to Galapagos, Machu Picchu, the native markets of Ecuador or other adventure!

A Comprehensive Guide to the 2024 Giro d’Italia

[table-of-contents] stripped

It’s late April, which means it’s almost time for one of the sport’s hardest races in one of the world’s most beautiful locations: the Giro d’Italia , the first of pro cycling’s trifecta of three-week “grand tours.” While not as prestigious as the Tour de France , the Tour of Italy is considered by many to be the hardest grand tour of the season, a race known for its challenging terrain, stunning scenery, and the iconic maglia rosa , the “pink jersey” that’s awarded each day to the leader of the Giro’s General Classification.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Giro d’Italia:

Dates: Saturday, May 4 - Sunday, May 26

How to Watch

If you’re a Max subscriber ($9.99/month), then you have access to the streaming platform’s B/R Sports package, which is the only legal way to stream the Giro d’Italia in the USA. For now, the package is free to all regular Max subscribers, but at some point, it will cost an additional $9.99 each month. That’s not as affordable as GCN+ used to be, but considering everything else you get with the B/R Sports package (such as MLB, NHL, NBA, NCAA Men’s March Madness, U.S. Soccer, and 24 Hours of Le Mans coverage) it’s a pretty good deal.

Max has a user-friendly app for smartphones, streaming devices, game consoles, and smart TVs. There’s also an easy-to-navigate website, which is a helpful option for streaming the race from work. (Don’t worry, we won’t tell your boss.)

You could cancel your monthly subscription at the end of the race, but remember that Max will be offering live streams of many road, mountain, track, and cyclocross races throughout the rest of the year. If that floats your boat, consider getting an annual subscription for $99.99 (or $149.99 for ad-free streaming).

The 107th edition of the Giro d’Italia covers 3,386.7K (2,138 miles) over 21 stages, with two individual time trials, seven stages with uphill finishes, and six to eight stages expected to end with field sprints.

This year’s Grande Partenza takes place in Piemonte, near the French-Italian Alps, with two challenging road stages that will force the Giro’s GC contenders to be at their best right away. Stage 1, a 136K stage from Venaria Reale to Torino, features three categorized climbs–including the Superga and the Colle Maddalena–but it’s a short, punchy, uncategorized ascent just before the finish that could determine the stage winner.

Stage 2 begins in San Francesco al Campo and ends after 150K with this year’s first summit finish–on the Category 1 Santuario di Oropa, the climb on which deceased Italian legend Marco Pantani took one of his most famous stage wins in 1999. By the end of the first weekend, the GC battle will already be in full swing.

The race then begins working its way south, and Stages 3, 4, and 5—which finish in Fossano, Andora, and Lucca, respectively—should be days for the Giro’s sprinters. (Although the finishes of Stages 3 and 4 feature ramps inside the final 10K that could thwart the fast men.) Stage 6 brings the race from the coast into Tuscany (it finishes in Rapolano Terme) and features 12K of the strade bianche (“white gravel roads”) that give March’s Strade Bianche road race its name. If there’s one stage during the first week that has the potential to cause a few surprises, it’s this one.

Stage 7 is the first individual time trial of the Giro, and it’s a tough one: beginning in Foligno, the 37.2K race against the clock starts with over 30K of flat roads. But there’s a nasty sting in the course’s tail: a 6.5K climb to the finish line that starts steep and then ascends more gradually to the line. Riders who don’t pace themselves on the flat part of the course could explode on the final climb. There could be large time gaps here.

Starting in Spoleto, Stage 8 brings the second summit finish of the first week–on the Category 1 Prati di Tivo, a 14K climb in the Umbrian Apennines with an average gradient of 7%. With a field sprint expected in Napoli at the end of Sunday’s Stage 9 (after a 214K stage that starts in Avezzano), Stages 7 and 8 will determine which rider will wear the maglia rosa into the Giro’s first Rest Day.

The second week begins in Pompeii with Stage 10, a 142K stage that features a summit finish on a new climb, the Category 1 Bocca della Selva, a 20.9K climb with a deceiving 4.6% average gradient. The first few kilometers are actually downhill, so the climb is actually harder than its statistics suggest.

We expect Stage 11 (207K) to end with a field sprint in Francavilla al Mare, and Stage 12—with a jagged 190K stage through the Marche region (an area known for its muri or “walls”)—looks like the perfect day for a breakaway filled with puncheurs and riders who perform well in the spring classics. Friday’s Stage 13 is the flattest stage of this year’s race, which is probably a good thing considering the next two stages. This 179K stage from Riccione to Cento will be an active rest day for much of the peloton.

And they’ll need one because the third weekend begins with Stage 14–the Giro’s second individual time trial–a generally flat, 31K course from Castiglione delle Stiviere to Desenzano del Garda. This is a day for the Giro’s time trial specialists; the pure climbers will struggle to stay within shouting distance of their more powerful colleagues.

But they’ll have a chance for revenge on Sunday, when the race heads into the Alps for Stage 15, a 220K monster stage (the longest in this year’s race) with five categorized climbs, including back-to-back 2000m summits (both Category 1 ascents) at the end of the day, with a summit finish at the Mottolino ski resort just above Livigno. This weekend should blow the Giro wide open, leaving just a handful of riders still in contention to win the race overall.

The third week begins the same way the second week ends, with a 200K, high-altitude mountain stage. Stage 16 features the granddaddy of them all: the Stelvio, this year’s “Cima Coppi” as the highest summit in the race. Topping out at over 2700m, the climb comes early in the stage but will nonetheless offer a rude awakening to a peloton that’s coming out of the second Rest Day. After a long ride down into and through a valley, the day ends with the Category 1 Passo Pinei and then a summit finish on the Category 2 Monte Pana, in Santa Cristina in Val Gardena.

At “just” 159K, Stage 17 is much shorter than the previous two mountain stages, but it’s jammed with five categorized climbs, including the Category 2 Passo Sella and the Category 1 Passo Rolle. The day ends with two ascents of the Category 1 Passo Brocon, which the riders climb for a second time on their way to the finish line. This will be an intense stage, and it could pose a challenge for the team defending the pink jersey to control. The riders will be either climbing or descending from start to finish and if someone’s going to stage a third-week ambush, it could come here.

The next two stages offer a break from the mountains. Stage 18 brings a 166K downhill ride from Fiera di Primiero to Padua that should end with a field sprint. Stage 19 looks like the perfect chance for a small group of opportunists–who have likely been saving themselves in the high mountains–to escape and fight for a breakaway stage win in Sappada.

The 154K stage begins in Mortegliano and climbs steadily throughout the day, culminating with three categorized climbs in the second half stage, the last of which the riders summit just 7K from the finish. After so many days of intense climbing–and with one more day in the mountains still to come–the peloton could just sit back and let the break go all the way to the finish.

That sets the stage for Stage 20, the last chance for anyone hoping to steal the 2024 Giro d’Italia from whoever's been leading it. And–as the last two editions have shown us–that’s a realistic possibility. Starting in Alpago, the stage rolls along for about 85K before the first of two ascents of the Monte Grappa, an 18K climb with an average gradient of 8.1%–that’s steep . This isn’t a stage with a summit finish–the race finishes in Bassano del Grappa after a long descent from the top of the Monte Grappa down into the valley below–but even without one, the stage should still provide a dramatic conclusion to the Giro’s GC battle.

The race concludes Sunday in Rome with a 122K road stage featuring several circuits through the Eternal City. The day will begin with clinking glasses of prosecco, and end with one last chance for the sprinters to grab some glory.

You can find the elevation profiles and course maps for each 2024 Giro d’Italia stage here .

What Happened Last Year

For the second year in a row, the 2023 Giro d’Italia was decided on the grand tour’s penultimate day. In 2022, Australia’s Jai Hindley (BORA-hansgrohe) took the pink jersey from Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz (INEOS Grenadiers) on Stage 20. Hindley won a mountain stage at the end of the grand tour’s first week, then hung around near the top of the General Classification before seizing his moment late in the Giro’s final mountain stage and winning the race overall.

In 2023, Slovenia’s Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) followed the same formula, albeit without an early-stage win. After Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step)—who had won two stages and was wearing the pink jersey as the Giro’s overall leader—was forced to abandon the race after testing positive for Covid-19 on the eve of the Giro’s first Rest Day, Great Britain’s Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) took the maglia rosa . With the exception of the two days straddling the second Rest Day, Thomas held the jersey for much of the second and third weeks.

But he cracked on Stage 20, an 18.6K uphill time trial from Tarvisio to the summit of the Monte Lussari. Roglič, who entered the day just 26 seconds behind Thomas on GC, won the stage by 40 seconds, taking the pink jersey–and the 2023 Giro–by a slim margin.

Thomas held on to finish second, and Portugal’s João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) finished third. Italy’s Jonathan Milan (Bahrain-Victorious) won the Points Classification, France’s Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) won the King of the Mountains Classification, and Almeida was the Giro’s Best Young Rider.

Riders to Watch

Tadej pogačar (uae team emirates).

With most of the sport’s best grand tour riders (including Roglič) racing the Tour de France this summer, this year’s Giro has a short list of overall contenders, a list that’s headlined by one of the sport’s true superstars: Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates).

The 25-year-old has never raced the Giro, and he takes the starting line this year as the favorite to win and dominate it. Then he’s planning to head to the Tour, where he’s hoping to become the first rider since Italy’s Marco Pantani in 1998 to win the Giro and the Tour in the same season.

Geraint Thomas (INEOS-Grenadiers)

Pogačar’s biggest challenger will likely be Geraint Thomas, who’s coming back to the Giro after last year’s disappointment. The 37-year-old (he’ll turn 38 during the race) will have a strong and experienced team supporting him–and the course suits him–but he’ll have a hard time overcoming Pogačar.

Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike)

We’ll also be keeping an eye on Belgium’s Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike), who made headlines last December when it was announced that he was breaking his contract with BORA-hansgrohe (who had recently signed Roglič away from Jumbo) to join the Dutch superteam.

The winner of the Tour de l‘Avenir in 2022, Uijtdebroeks just turned 21 and is widely considered to be a future grand tour contender. Without Belgium’s Wout van Aert, who’s skipping the Giro due to injuries he sustained in a crash at a race in Belgium a few weeks ago, Uijtdebroeks becomes the focus of the team’s Giro plans. And with a strong squad alongside him, he could finish on the podium and is the easy pick to become the Giro’s Best Young Rider.

Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale)

Other GC contenders include Australia’s Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), a former fourth-place finisher at the Tour de France and Giro stage-winner; Italy’s Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Victorious), a former Giro podium-finisher; Colombia’s Daniel Martinez (BORA-hansgrohe), a former fifth-place finisher at the Giro; Great Britain’s Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost), a two-time top-10 finisher; and France’s Romain Bardet (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), a former Tour de France podium finisher who was seventh at the Giro in 2021 but might be more of stage hunter this year.

Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek)

Other stage hunters include Italy’s Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), a three-time stage winner who was the Giro’s King of the Mountains in 2019; France’s Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), who’s riding his first Giro; and Canada’s Michael Woods (Israel-PremierTech), who’s hoping to complete a hat-trick of grand tour stage victories with a win in Italy.

Nairo Quintana (Movistar)

One of the most controversial riders in this year’s Giro will be Colombia’s Nairo Quintana (Movistar), winner of the Giro in 2014. But the 34-year-old hasn’t raced since finishing sixth overall in the 2022 Tour de France and then having his results disqualified after testing positive for tramadol, a painkiller that’s banned by the UCI (but not banned by WADA). He’s now back in the WorldTour with the team that made him famous. His return has not been a popular one , though, and it will be interesting to see how he’s received in Italy.

The Giro also offers several stage win opportunities for field sprinters, and that–plus the fact that the Tour de France is very not sprinter-friendly–means there will be lots of them taking the start, including Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek); Belgium’s Tim Merlier (Soudal–Quick Step); Dutch sprinters Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), and Australia’s Sam Welsford (BORA-Hansgrohe), Caleb Ewan (Jayco AlUla) and Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck); and Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty).

Last but not least, the Giro will see several North Americans taking the start, with Americans Larry Warbasse (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Magnus Sheffield (INEOS Grenadiers), and Will Barta (Movistar) joining Woods on the starting line, with more expected to join them as teams finalize their rosters.

With a clear favorite, two time trials, and majestic mountain passes, cycling’s most beautiful Grand Tour promises a spectacle at its finest.
