Profiles Tour de Suisse 2022

From the 12th to the 19th of June the World Tour peloton will have it's final preparation race before the Tour de France. Running at the same time as the Critérium du Dauphiné, the Tour de Suisse has tough competition, but every years the eight-stage race sees premier startlist and this year is no exception.

With eight stages on the menu, the climbers will be treated to a whole week of rough terrain which does not provide a single opportunity for pure sprinters. The opening five stages will be held in Switzerland's hills, whilst the final weekend will see two mountainous days and a final time-trial in Liechenstein.

Final startlist Tour de Suisse with Evenepoel, Sagan, Vlasov, Martínez, Pidcock and Fuglsang

Profiles Tour de Suisse 2022

The opening stage of the Tour de Suisse will see the puncheurs and climbers come to the fore. The final circuit has 45 kilometers in distance and will be ridden three times – although in reality, most of it is ridden four times, and it's main feature is the climb into Küsnachter Berg which features 2.7 kilometers at 8.2%, with it’s hardest gradients towards the center. It summits with 4.5 kilometers to go, and then a set of rolling roads will lead the riders into the finish line.

Profiles Tour de Suisse 2022

196 kilometers on the second day of racing at the Tour de Suisse, this one with a flatter start – with a relatively flat first half of the day. The second half will be tougher though. The ascent to Eichenberg in it’s 3 kilometers it features 7.5% average gradient will see further damage, whilst with 14.5 kilometers to go there will be the final ascent, the Challpass which features 6.2 kilometers at 6.2%. From there on an inconsistent descent will lead into the finale.

Profiles Tour de Suisse 2022

Third day of the race sees the peloton back on the hills, however this time with a different dynamic as the finale is more flat, but the first two thirds of the day are relatively hard. The day starts off with a difficult ascent, of the already ridden Eichenberg (3Km at 7.4%) which is likely to see a strong breakaway go up the road. The climbs with 120 (8.2Km; 4.5%), 110 (3.3Km; 8.8%) and 93.5 (5.4Km; 8.6%) kilometers to go will add to the fire. Another ascent with 61 (7.4Km; 4.9%) kilometers to go will be the last long ascent of the day, and the rolling roads that follow won’t be easy to chase but will also be easier to have an organized chase.

The final climbs come with 48 (2.4Km; 5.8%) and 16.5 (1.2Km; 6.2%) will not be as complicated, and are big-ring climbs which will then lead into the finish in Grenchen next to the velodrome.

Profiles Tour de Suisse 2022

Stage four will be an easier day, with a more flat presence, however an ascent with 3.6 kilometers at 7.9% average gradient, that summits with 15.5 kilometers to go, which sees a small plateau and then a very fast descent will lead the riders into the final 5 kilometers, where the streets won’t be technical, into a lakeside finale.

Profiles Tour de Suisse 2022

Stage five can be very tricky. The starts takes place in altitude and will lead the riders into a circuit that will be ridden three times, and has a distance of 28 kilometers with four small hills to tackle in it with descents after each one. The first comes with 20.5Km to go (in the final lap) and features 2Km at 5.1% to Castel San Pietro, and afterwards the riders will have a 1 kilometer at 8.6% gradient which is the most explosive of the ramps – with 14.5Km to go.

The hardest of the hilltops comes with 8.5 kilometers to go, it features 7.7% average gradient throughout 2.5 kilometer, a more constant effort however due to it’s proximity to the finish it may be chosen to attack. After a small and steep descent, there will then be a run-up to the final ascent which is 1.9 kilometers long at 5.8%, with some more gentle gradients towards the line.

Profiles Tour de Suisse 2022

The race enters the Alps, with a decisive stage. Before the categorized ascent of the Nufenenpass itself the riders will climb around 1000 meters, however then they find 13.6 kilometers at 7.8%. As for the final ascent, it's 17.8 kilometers in length and has 7.9% average gradient and is a climb that features tough gradients right from the base. There is no rest, it’s a very long ascent that will see the riders test their full climbing capabilities.

Profiles Tour de Suisse 2022

The final road stage of the race will be equally hard, and it is likely to be a day aswell decided in the final ascent. The riders will go up to almost 200 meters in altitude with a 29-kilometer Lukmanierpass. Over an hour of climbing with 5% average gradient, it can be the place where the breakaway will be established, summit with 125 kilometers to go.

The final climb is 12.5 kilometers long with 8.7% average gradient. An explosive climb at first with lots of hairpins towards Malbun ski station where the climbers will have the final opportunity to create the difference.

Profiles Tour de Suisse 2022

The final day of the race will see a time-trial fully within the territory of Liechenstein. It will have it’s start and finish in the capital town of Vaduz, with 25 kilometers in length with long sections where the specialists can really do the damage.

Tour de Suisse 2022 profile stage 6

The first 40 kilometres of the race takes place on the flat before another 40 kilometres rise false flat to the base of the Nufenen Pass.

Basically, the first part of the climb is more of the same. So a lot of false flat. With 17 kilometres to go to the top the profile changes and the gradients are hovering between 7 and 9% for the rest of the climb, although the steepest section goes up at 14.2%. The Nufenen Pass totals 24.5 kilometres and the average gradient sits at 5.5%.

The Nufenen Pass is the highest paved mountain pass within Switzerland. The highest point lies at 2,478 metres above sea level.

After cresting the Nufenen Pass the riders fly down a 50 kilometres descent – steep at first, then false flat – before 20 kilometres on the flat lead to the foot of the finish climb. It’s a 17.6 kilometres toil with an average gradient of 7.5%. The first part features the steepest sectors, while the ascent flattens out to 5% in the last 3 kilometres.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 en 1 seconds.

ACE Yacht – Splendid $160 M Superyacht

The ACE yacht was launched by Lürssen in 2012.

The 87m(285.4ft) superyacht is currently for sale at $160,000,000 after being used exclusively by the owner.

The unconventional design of the boat has brought great pleasure to guests and crew alike and features many toys and tenders to make the yachting experience memorable.

The boat has a running cost of $10-$15 million per year and is the 32nd largest boat built by Lürssen.

ACE Yacht.jpg15

ACE yacht interior

The ACE yacht was closely influenced by the requirements of Yuriy Kosiuk to be a family-orientated yacht.

With his guidance, Winch Design took the unconventional designs of the owner to create an interior that aimed at having a good time with family and making life onboard work better.

To achieve this, the traditional layout of a superyacht was reorganized.

Several changes were made, including placing the owner’s suite facing aft and not upfront, allowing the owner privacy and panoramic views of the ocean.

The crew deck was built on the main deck, with sliding doors on the side deck to give them air, create happy working conditions, and attract the best crew.

ACE Yacht.jpg4

The interior includes ten guests in 5 rooms and accommodation for 30 crew. The interior reflects a contemporary grand hotel with a light and fresh feel.

There is a Roman villa-inspired spa on the lower deck, a Russian tearoom, and a nightclub on the upper deck.

The main deck has a gym, and cinema and is large compared to the owner’s deck to allow more space for family fun.

image 16

The exterior features unique sweeping arches that appear wave-like on the haunches of the superstructure.

The superstructure is aluminum, and the hull is steel. ACE is a Lürssen construction designed by Winch Design.

The exterior reflects a seamless transition between the interior and exterior. The arches on the ACE yacht are meant to show the “fantastic power of a wave,” reflecting the passion and enthusiasm of the owner. ACE has several toys to aid in the fun of the family and the guests.

With a length of 87m(285.4ft), the ACE yacht displaces 2732GT. The boat has a beam of 4.5m(47.6ft) and a draft of 3.75m(12.3ft).

Her 2 MTU engines give her a top speed of 16.5kn and a cruising speed of 14kn. The yacht has a range of 6500nm.

The boat features Quantum XT Zero stabilizers that afford a comfortable experience aboard ACE. She was built to Lloyd’s 100A1 specifications. The boat was built in 2012 and refitted in 2018.

The 85-metre yacht EYE (ex ACE) is geared towards family life. The onboard experience is centred around the upper deck as the main social gathering space, with circulation intelligently designed to facilitate smooth service while preserving the privacy of owner and guests. Andrew Winch also gave EYE a very unusual profile: the two "eyes" are both a design feature as well as a sheltered balcony. The interior, also by Andrew Winch, is a glamorous escape with no compromise. EYE is a truly bespoke yacht that defies design convention and symbolises engineering excellence.

The 87-metre superyacht  Ace  was built back in 2012 by the German shipyard  Lürssen  and refitted in 2018. Here, thanks to a recent photoshoot in Barcelona, we get an insight of what the vast and voluminous 2,732 GT yacht looks like inside.

Ace yacht cruising

Built for an experienced owner, the  superyacht is now for sale . She has only ever had one owner since new, and has only been privately used.

Ace yacht wellness

The yacht’s unique lines and beautiful interiors are a product of  Winch Design , who was the studio behind both her exterior and interior looks.  Winch ‘s state-of-the-art design includes oval balconies and large side-arches, complemented by a timeless, classic interior.

Ace yacht wellness

Ace  breaks the conventions of yacht interior layouts to optimise the onboard family living experience. She has a seamless inside to outside transition by way of design, and her upper deck dedicates almost 1,000 square metres to social spaces.

Ace yacht saloon

Ace  features accommodation for 10 guests across her six impressive staterooms. She is also capable of carrying up to 30 crew members onboard to ensure a relaxed journey. Although this is her current accommodation layout, builders say it would be possible for a future owner to convert the massage room into a sixth stateroom, which would then provide accommodations for 12 guests.

Ace yacht hall & staircase

As well as a helipad, her main deck offers a cinema, gym and guest suites with easy access between them all. The master suite faces aft and offers unobstructed panoramic views with a small aft terrace providing a wind-sheltered area for the owner.

Ace yacht stateroom

Unique port and starboard private staircases run directly from the owner’s deck all the way to the swim platform. That means the owner has no need to pass through any deck interiors.

Ace yacht stateroom

The forward area of the dining saloon on the upper deck is a cosy sitting room and library area with a fireplace, piano and games table. This deck also includes a bespoke Russian tea room and nightclub.

Ace yacht aft deck

Located aft on the lower deck,  Ace  features large tender garage doors for easy water access. She also has another opening in her hull which has the option to be utilised as a tender docking area and a beach-style swimming platform.

Ace yacht cinema

Ace  is also known for having travelled with the  recently-sold support vessel,  the 67.15-metre  Garçon . The  Damen -built support vessel was the Dutch shipyard’s first large support vessel and provided  Ace  with tender, crew, provisioning and helicopter support.

Ace yacht beach club

The pair of yachts and their crew have also been involved in environmental  clean-up missions in the past. Powered by twin MTU 16V 4000 M61R diesel engines,  Ace  can cruise comfortably at 12 knots and reaches a top speed of 17 knots.

First Look: Video Tour Inside 87m Lürssen Motor Yacht Ace With Andrew Winch

The 87 metre Lürssen superyacht Ace has been revealed in full for the first time in a video captured by her crew.

Sourced exclusively for BOAT International and making its debut at the Virtual BOAT Show , the video takes a virtual tour around the vessel with guidance from Andrew Winch, whose design studio was responsible for her exterior and interior design.

The 87 metre helicopter-capable superyacht  Ace  left the Lürssen shipyard in 2012 an instant celebrity owing to her distinctive exterior featuring large arches, glass balconies and dual-tone paint finish. Winch Design, who came up with her standout exterior, also created the detailed interior that melds epoque pieces and fine craftsmanship with contemporary comforts.

Built for the utmost relaxation, Ace features one of the most comprehensive wellness areas seen in a superyacht with sauna, massage and shower room and a large Roman-style marble bath, complete with columns, all easily accessed from the beach club.

The exterior decks feature a large freshwater pool and another Jacuzzi, all perfectly private. The guest cabins, all on main deck, have easy access to the gym, a hair salon and a movie theatre. Beyond the gleaming engine room, a garage holds large tenders and toys.

Currently listed for sale with Eastwind Yachts , Ace is asking €145,000,000. She is offered for sale alongside her Damen support vessel Garçon .

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht screamed 'I will kill you' and threw $100 bills into the water when told he couldn't use a private dock

  • The owner of a Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee, per CBS8.
  • The employee said Ajay Thakore mooned and threw cash at him after being told he couldn't use the dock.
  • Thakore, the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, issued an apology through his public relations team.

Insider Today

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee after being told he couldn't be there, the San Diego-based broadcaster CBS8 reported on March 11.

Joseph Holt, a 21-year-old employee at Marriot Marina in San Diego, told CBS8 that he spotted the yacht sailing into the private dock. The owner, whom CBS8 identified as Ajay Thakore, tried to pick another person up at the dock, Holt said.

"I told him respectfully that he couldn't be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat," Holt told CBS8.

In a YouTube video posted by @SM-wc9eq on March 10, a dark blue Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is seen sailing out of a dock. A man in a gray T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a cap was shown standing on the yacht. The man appeared to be Thakore, per CBS8.

Thakore was shown shouting at Holt. "I will kill you, you know I will kill you!" he can be heard saying multiple times in the video

Thakore was later shown pounding his fist on his palm and pointing his thumb down before telling Holt: "To your face!" Holt was shown responding by pointing his middle finger at Thakore.

"I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt told CBS8.

Related stories

Holt said Thakore then took $100 bills from his wallet and threw them at him. He added that Thakore mooned him. This exchange was not shown in the video.

"He was saying I'm nobody, I'm nothing, I work a silly job. He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it," Holt said. Holt did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The San Diego Harbor Police arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore's yacht exited the dock, per CBS8.

The Harbor Police told Business Insider that Holt decided to press charges against Thakore and that they are investigating the incident.

According to Thakore's LinkedIn page , he's the CEO of Doctor Multimedia. The company's website shows that it's a healthcare marketing firm based in San Diego. Thakore appears to go by the name Ace Rogers on Instagram and TikTok, where he's noted as being a professional gambler.

Thakore, through his public relations team, told CBS8 in a statement that his altercation with Holt was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement said. Thakore did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

Thakore isn't the only CEO who's been called out for threatening another person. In November 2021, an Activision spokesperson told BI that its ex-CEO Bobby Kotick had previously apologized for telling his assistant he would have her killed. The spokesperson added that Kotick's threat was "obviously hyperbolic and inappropriate" and that "he deeply regrets the exaggeration and tone."

In June 2020, Lisa Alexander, the CEO of LaFace Skincare, a cosmetics company, apologized in a statement to the media after she had threatened to call the police on her neighbor for writing "Black Lives Matter" on his property.

11 Juin - Etape 1 : EINSIEDELN – EINSIEDELN - 12.7km

tour suisse profil

13 Juin - Etape 3 : TAFERS – VILLARS-SUR-OLLON - 144 km

tour suisse profil

14 Juin - Etape 4 : MONTHEY – LOÈCHE-LES-BAINS - 153 km

tour suisse profil

15 Juin - Etape 5 : FIESCH – LA PUNT - 211 km

tour suisse profil

16 Juin - Etape 6 : LA PUNT – OBERWIL-LIELI - 215 km

Tour de Suisse united in mourning for Gino Mäder

Swiss rider dead at the age of 26 following crash on Albulapass

Gino Mäder

All thoughts at the Tour de Suisse today are for Gino Mäder, who remains in hospital after his crash on the descent of the Albulapass yesterday afternoon. His Bahrain Victorious team provided its most recent update on his condition yesterday evening, confirming that he had been resuscitated at the scene of the crash and then transported by helicopter to Chur Hospital. Magnus Sheffield was also a faller on the descent, and the Ineos rider spent last night in hospital after being diagnosed with a concussion.

Today’s stage, meanwhile, has been shortened to 141km due to a rock avalanche above Brienz, meaning that the early climbs of the Albulapass and Latsch have been stricken from the route of day that now gets underway at 12.30 CET. Simone Giuliani has more details here .

After yesterday's queen stage, today's 6th stage will start at 12.30 pm in Chur instead of La Punt. A big thank you to the entire staff for making this last-minute postponement possible! Of course, our thoughts are also with Gino Mäder and his family! Stay strong Gino!❤️ pic.twitter.com/gpYaY25nCv June 16, 2023

Mattias Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo) regained yellow yesterday but it's still very tight atop the overall standings, with Felix Gall (AG2R Citroen) second at 8 seconds, and yesterday's winner, a resurgent Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates), third at 18 seconds. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep), meanwhile, remains firmly in the hunt given the time trial on the final day. The top 10 is as follows:

Tour de Suisse 2023: GC standings after stage 5

Gino Mäder, 1997-2023

Bahrain Victorious have announced the death of Gino Mäder following his crash on yesterday's stage.

"It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we have to announce the passing of Gino Mäder. On Friday 16th June, following a very serious crash during stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse, Gino lost his battle to recover from the severe injuries he sustained. Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident, and our thoughts and prayers are with Gino's family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

"Following the high-speed incident which occurred on the final descent of Thursday’s stage, the 26 year old was resuscitated at the scene by medical staff who also performed CPR, before being airlifted to hospital.

"Despite the best efforts of the phenomenal staff at Chur hospital, Gino couldn’t make it through this, his final and biggest challenge, and at 11:30am we said goodbye to one of the shining lights of our team.

"Gino was an extraordinary athlete, an example of determination, a valued member of our team and the whole cycling community. His talent, dedication, and passion for the sport has inspired us all.

"Managing Director Milan Erzen commented this morning:” "We are devastated by the loss of our exceptional cyclist, Gino Mäder. His talent, dedication, and enthusiasm were an inspiration to us all. Not only was he an extremely talented cyclist, but a great person off the bike. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. Bahrain Victorious will race in his honour, keeping his memory on every road we race. We are determined to show the spirit and passion Gino displayed, and he will always remain an integral part of our team.

"Gino’s family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss, and we kindly ask that their wishes be respected. The team and family express our gratitude for the overwhelming support we have received from the whole cycling world.

"Gino, thank you for the light, the joy, and the laughs you brought us all, we will miss you as a rider and as a person.

"Today and every day, we ride for you, Gino."

Today's stage has been delayed until further notice following the tragic news. I don't see how the riders who raced alongside Gino Mäder yesterday can possibly be expected to climb on their bikes and compete this afternoon.

We are heartbroken! Gino you've been an excellent rider but even more a wonderful person! Always smilling and making people happy arround you! Rest in peace! Our thoughts are with Gino's family!Below you can find the official statement of @BHRVictorious pic.twitter.com/hqLF8FF5nQ June 16, 2023

Marcel Sieberg of Tudor Cycling consoles Bahrain Victorious staff at the start of stage 6 of the Tour de Suisse.

In loving memory and deep gratitude for Gino Mäder. You touched our lives, and your presence will forever be cherished. Rest in peace. 🙏 June 16, 2023
🙏🏻 Gino, thank you for the light, the joy, and the laughs you brought us all, we will miss you as a rider and as a person.❤️ Today and every day, we ride for you, Gino.🔗 https://t.co/CSx5BsWfRz pic.twitter.com/caBmfmWwyg June 16, 2023

The race organisation has confirmed that today's stage of the Tour de Suisse has been neutralised. The peloton will ride the final 30km of the route together in memory of Gino Mäder, as per the wishes of his family. “The peloton will ride the final 30km," said the Tour de Suisse organisation. "The race will be neutralised today and all the riders will form a cortege in memory of Gino Mäder as they ride to the finish line.”

Tour de Suisse race director Olivier Senn: “We’re all devasted – the organisers, the teams, the riders, everybody. What happened is really terrible and it’s difficult for me to speak because Gino was a wonderful person who didn’t deserve to leave this world in this way. Everybody knew him and everybody loved him. We won’t race today but we want to remember him and pay tribute to him by riding the finale of the stage. We’ll all ride together as a group to the finish line in memory of Gino.”

This is how we will always remember you❤️ With a big smile on your face! The peloton will ride the last 20 kilometres of today's course neutralised in honour of Gino Mäder. Expected finish in Oberwil-Lieli is 16.40h..We ride for you Gino❤️ pic.twitter.com/B27VmMqpuz June 16, 2023

The Tour de Suisse

The peloton is expected begin riding the neutralised final 20km of the stage at 16.00 CET, reaching the finish line in Oberwil-Lieli at 16.40

Gino Mäder was an undoubted talent on the bike, as his stage win at the 2021 Giro d’Italia and his fifth-place finish at that year’s Vuelta a España’s testified, but it was his immense human qualities that left the greatest impression on all who met him. His interviews, both in races and away from them, were testament to a range of interests that extended far beyond the bike, with a particular emphasis on environmental issues.

Professional cycling has a tendency to take itself very seriously – too seriously – at times, but Mäder’s freewheeling attitude always felt like an antidote to all that. A sense of fun pervaded his every act on a bike and his every utterance off it. His enthusiasm for cycling and, above all, for the people he met through the sport was obvious, and his death has sparked a sincere outpouring of grief from his peers and from all those who watched him race.

Tour de Suisse

The Tour de Suisse peloton is currently pedalling gently towards the finish line in Oberwil-Lieli, united in remembrance of the late Gino Mäder. The riders, many of whom are donning black armbands, are taking it in turns to pedal at the head of the bunch. We imagine that Mäder's Bahrain Victorious teammates will lead the peloton across the finish line.

As well as the poignant, rolling eulogy to Gino Mäder currently unfolding on the road to Oberwil-Lieli, many more tributes have been paid from the peloton and from across cycling to the late rider in the hours since his tragic death at the age of 26.

Bahrain victorious

Bahrain Victorious lead the peloton up a short climb, to hushed but heartfelt applause from the spectators gathered at the roadside.

The Bahrain Victorious riders and team cars have moved to the very head of the peloton as they enter the final kilometre of this tribute to Gino Mäder.

The only sound at the finish is of gentle applause as first the Bahrain Victorious riders and then the rest of the peloton cross the finish line. Some of the Bahrain riders raise a hand to acknowledge the outpouring of sympathy from the roadside. Pello Bilbao points to the sky in memory of his friend and teammate.

We have, sadly, witnessed other rolling memorials like this over the years. Motorola led the peloton over the line in Pau at the 1995 Tour de France in memory of Fabio Casartelli. Leopard Trek and Tyler Farrar paid a similar tribute to Wouter Weylandt in Livorno on the 2011 Giro d’Italia. Lotto Soudal led the Tour de Pologne peloton to the finish in Kocierz following Bjorg Lambrecht’s death in 2019. On each of these sorrowful occasions, the solidarity of the peloton has been deeply affecting and beyond the description of mere words.

In the saddest imaginable circumstances, yellow jersey Mattias Skjelmose put the peloton's day into words. "I’m sad. It was really weird to be on the bike today. It hit me really hard when I saw only six Bahrain riders going over the line together. That was something really pushing me to the limit emotionally," said Skjelmose.

Like most at the Tour de Suisse, he hasn't had time to give any consideration to whether the race should proceed this weekend.

"For now, we only did 20k neutralised and I think that was right because Gino’s parents wanted it," he said. "I don’t know what’s happening in the next days. And I’m not sure how I really feel about it myself. Right now I just want to go home and sleep."

World champion Remco Evenepoel consoles Gino Mäder’s mother Heidi.

Gino Mäder’s mother Sandra followed today's memorial ride from a Bahrain Victorious team car, and she was consoled by many of the rider's colleagues and friends when they reached the finish line.

Race director Olivier Senn has indicated that no decision has yet been taken over the continuation of the Tour de Suisse. "Today it's all about Gino," he said, according to Blick. "I spoke to his parents. They don't want us to be sad. We will conduct the discussions as to whether and how to proceed. But we won't push anything."

Olivier Senn has since spoken in a press conference at the finish. “It was a very intense last hour and really hard to take in the sitation," he said. "It was truly a beautiful celebration in memory of Gino, even though it was definitely the hardest day of my life and the hardest hour of my life. You never think of that when you run the race. It’s all adrenaline and full gas to the finish and now it was completely the opposite.

“I think it’s really important that we keep Gino in a positive memory. He was a happy rider and an open rider, an intelligent person who thought beyond cycling. This is what we should keep in memory. I certainly will and I hope the cycling world will as well.”

Senn confirmed that no decision has been taken over whether the race will continue. Discussion will take place in the next hours with the UCI, CPA and AIGCP, though a final decision might not arrive until tomorrow morning.

"Regarding tomorrow and the next stages, we will start the discussions after this," Senn said. "It’s not a simple decision. There’s a lot of people involved who are very moved by the situation: riders, team members and our staff. Everybody knew him well.

"We will have to discuss if it’s at all possible to organise a race, and if our staff is up for it. We will certainly not push it through just because we want to or have to. We will do it if everyone wants it, if everyone is fit and if the mindset is the right one to produce a safe race tomorrow and the day after.

"We will also discuss with the UCI, the AIGCP and the UCI on what we’re going to do. It will be an open discussion. We will take a common decision. It’s not just our decision but a decision of all the parties. Those discussions will take place in the next hours and maybe the decision will only be tomorrow morning. We don’t know yet."

Gino Mader

Alasdair Fotheringham has written this obituary for the late Gino Mäder . He was a rider and a man apart. "The results were only ever a small part of the story," Alasdair writes. "As Friday's outpouring of grief and sadness has shown, it is Gino Mäder the person, the rider who always looked beyond himself and to the world beyond cycling, who will be missed the most."

A full account of the Tour de Suisse peloton's tribute to Gino Mäder is available here .

Tour de Suisse

Stefan Küng paid this tribute to Gino Mäder in an interview with L’Équipe TV. The Swiss rider was among the first to seek out Heidi Mäder and offer his condolences at the finish line. “I knew him well, given that he was a Swiss pro rider and there aren’t so many of us,” Küng said. “I don’t really have any words, my thoughts are just with his family and his loved ones. Gino was just a marvellous guy, he was very courteous and very empathetic. He often thought of others and he know he was privileged to be able to do this sport. He was just a very good person.”
