Here you can also find the Public Library (with 55.000 volumes), the Post-Byzantine Museum of Zante exhibiting treasures such as statues trimmed with gold, icons and art woodcuts.
  • The Post- Byzantine Museum of Zante in Solomos square, exhibits treasures such as statues trimmed with gold, icons and art woodcuts.
  • The coastal road known as Strata Marina (K. Lomvardou street), which is one of the most frequented part of the city, with cafes, bars and restaurants, from the Solomos Square up to the church of the patron-saint Aghios Dionysios.
  • The Aghios Markos square. Here, in 1797, the revolutionaries (popolaroi) burnt the Libro d’ Oro and planted the tree of freedom. This paved square is the main meeting point for locals and visitors. Here, you will find the Museum of Solomos, Kalvos and Eminent Zakynthians which also hosts the bust of the Greek national poet, created by Georgios Broutos in 1902.
  • Rouga: Its name is Alexandros Romas street, starting at Aghios Markos Square crossing almost the whole town. This street with the impressive arcades has been the main commercial center of the city for centuries.
  • The Venetian Castle situated on a hill overhanging the town in the place of the old acropolis named Psofis.
  • The Stranis hill, 2 km away from the town, offering a great view. Here, the poet Dionysios Solomos inspired the ‘Hymn to Liberty’ (later the Greek national anthem) and the “Free Besieged” attending the siege of the city of Messolonghi.
  • Aghios Nikolaos tou Molou (Solomou Square): a church of Renaissance order (17th century) with a belfry dating back to the Byzantine period. Aghios Dionysios lived here in 1853.
  • Aghios Dionysios (at the new pier of the port): where the relic of the patron-saint of the island is kept in a silver larnax.
  • Aghios Markos (1516): The belfry of this catholic church situated at the Aghiou Markou Square is a copy of the one of Saint Mark’s basilica in Venice.
  • Aghios Georgios: The army commanders Kolokotronis, Nikitaras, Fotomaras as well as other fighters of the 1821 Revolution took their vows on the icon which is kept in this church.
  • Panaghia Pikardiotissa at the outskirts of the castle.

The Comprehensive Guide To Zakynthos Town, Greece

tourist information zakynthos town

Zakynthos Town was our first stop on our three weeks trip around Zakynthos island . It is the main city of the island with quite a large port. However, Zakynthos Town (or Zante) is not really the first choice for tourists, since there aren’t many beautiful beaches around it. By the way, if you wonder what is right, Zakynthos Town or Zante Town, both names are equally correct.

For those who have just a week of vacation in Zakynthos island, I wouldn’t recommend staying in Zakynthos Town for more than a day. But if you have time and want to explore the island at a leisurely pace, then a few days in Zante Town would do nicely.

How To Get To Zakynthos Town From The Airport

Zakynthos Town is located just 5 km from the airport and the most convenient way to get there is by taxi. The taxi ride will cost you €13.

Where To Stay In Zakynthos Town

We spent our four days in Diana hotel . It is located 3 minutes in from the city beach and has a nice top roof pool. We stayed in a Standard room which cost $60 per night. And although the location of this hotel is great, the service is good, and the room in general was nice, I must warn you that the beds were too hard and during our four nights we slept very poorly. You can read my full review of Diana hotel here.

Where To Eat

Zakynthos Town has many great tavernas to try, so anything you choose will be pretty much the same. However I want to recommend two of the places that we ate at and just loved.

Grandma's Pot

Grandma’s Pot is a cute small place that serves traditional Greek food. And although every dish they have is quite good (at least every dish I’ve tried), I would recommend you try their rabbit (tender meat and full of flavorful sauce).

Grandma's Pot

Yard Of Taste is one of the most authentic restaurants in Zakynthos Town. It is located just a few minutes from the main square, away from the crowds and noise. The food here always looks delicious, smells delicious, and tastes delicious. The staff is very friendly and always happy to give you advice or help with anything you need.

Things To Do In Zakynthos Town

Explore the city.

Zakynthos island was once under the influence of Venetian kingdom. The impact of those times can be seen everywhere on Zakynthos island, especially in their capital city.

Explore the city

Zakynthos Town still has some nicely preserved architecture like clock towers, churches, and many buildings made in the Venetian style. You can visit some of the old churches and have a nice walk on narrow streets admiring the architecture.

While you are staying in Zakynthos Town don’t forget to visit Solomos Square with a statue of Dionysios Solomos, (the famous Greek poet) in the center of it.

Zakynthos

Another place you need to check is Alexandrou Roma street that leads to Agiou Markou square. A.Roma street is the main shopping street in the town. Every door on this street leads to a store, restaurant, cafe, or a bar.

Do Your Souvenir Shopping

Zakynthos Town is a great place to do your souvenir shopping. I’ve just mentioned Alexandrou Roma street, and that’s where you need to go.

Shoppig street

The main shopping street in the city is full of things you might want to bring back home as souvenirs for yourself or your friends. Another great thing about this, is that the prices are decent and things are rarely overpriced. For example we bought a beautiful long white Greek style dress for €25, a gold plated ankle bracelet with glass mati (evil eyes) was €19, sunglasses €3, magnets – not more than €1. There are also many other things that you might be interested in and that will cost more in other places on Zakynthos island.

Relax At The City Beach

Before we arrived in Zante Town, I’d read that there is no place for swimming here. And I must tell you that it is not true. There might not be long sandy beaches with fancy cafes like in Mykonos , but there is still a cute, although small, city beach with crystal clear water and a decent cafe.

EOT beach

Zante beach is called Plaza EOT and it is located up north the coast of the city. The EOT beach has two parts: the pebble part, and a platform part where you can rent a sunbed and an umbrella. The set of two sunbeds and an umbrella costs €7 for the day.

Water shoes

There is also a shower on the beach to wash salt out of yourself, changing rooms, and pretty clean bathrooms.

The beach cafe serves drinks and food. The prices are the same everywhere. A half a liter beer is €4, Gyros plate is €8 (huge portion), a plate of fried sardines is €9.

Zakynthos town: Beach food

The beach itself is nice and clean. And the more I spent time here, the more I liked it. Although I must mention that you do need water shoes. As almost everywhere in Greece, EOT beach is very rocky.

Check out my list of The Best Beaches On Zakynthos Island in Greece . This list contains the most popular beaches, as well as hidden gems

Visit Bochali Area

Bochali area or Bochali town as some locals call it (although it is part of the capital city), is located on the mountain right behind Zante town and overlooks the harbor.

Zakynthos town: Bochali Area

The Bochali area is famous for its Bochali Venetian Castle that unfortunately was damaged by an earthquake. However it is still open for tourists and for €4 you can enter the castle and have a nice walk between ruins and old trees.

Zakynthos town: Bochali

The best time to visit the Bochali area is at sunset and stay until dark and the city lights are on. This is the view you will want to see.

Have A Sunset Tour To Shipwreck Beach

While you are staying in Zakynthos city, you might as well do a sunset tour to Shipwreck beach . There are two ways to visit this iconic place: from the sea, or the viewpoint on a cliff.

The sunset tour we found on AirBnB Experiences and since we don’t drive ourselves, the tour was a perfect way to hit all the remote locations.

Zakynthos town: Shipwreck Beach

The tour includes Machariado village, Kiliomenos & Agios Leon village, Exo Hora (see the oldest olive tree in Zakynthos), Shipwreck view point and other stops. The private tour costs €120 and you can have a total of 4 people.

I really recommend this tour if you don’t drive yourself. The super friendly tour guide, George, was really helpful with our needs and actually did way more for us than we expected. You also can read here my full review of our Sunset Tour On Zakynthos.

10 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do on ZĂĄkynthos

Written by Jane Foster and Carri Wilbanks Updated Dec 22, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

ZĂĄkynthos (Zante) island truly offers something for everyone when it comes to things to do. Easy to access at just 16 kilometers off Peloponnese's west coast in the Ionian Sea, the geography here is stunning and varied. Steep cliffs plummet down to rocky shores with white pebble beaches and crystal-clear turquoise seas on the northwest coast, while to the south, you'll find golden-sand beaches and less rock formations. The island's central hinterland is also not lacking; it is a fertile plain overflowing with woodlands and olive groves.

This mix of beautiful scenery; good beaches; and access to an equally stunning underwater world, filled with hidden caves and colorful fish, which is perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving, has made ZĂĄkynthos one of the top tourist destinations in Greece .

Beyond the scenery, the island is also historically interesting. It was under Venice from 1484 to 1797, and Venetian influence can still be felt in the architecture, cuisine, and dialect. Unfortunately, few of its old buildings have remained, due to two devastating earthquakes, in 1515 and 1953.

Find out about the island's best places to visit with our list of the top things to do in Zakynthos.

Shipwreck beach (Navagio beach)

Probably the most photographed and, arguably, beautiful beach in all of Greece, Shipwreck Beach lies in the so-called Smuggler's Cove on Zakynthos' west coast. Made up of fine white pebbles backed by cliffs, the beach takes its name from the wreck of a contraband cigarette smuggling ship that washed up here in 1980.

The most special aspect of this beach is that it can only be accessed from the sea – grab a taxi-boat from the harbor at Agios Nikolaos , which is on the island's northeast coast, 32 kilometers from Zakynthos Town. You can also visit as part of an organized tour departing from Zakynthos Town.

ZĂĄkynthos Town (Zante Town)

On the island's east coast, extending in a wide arc along the gently sloping shores of a bay, Zåkynthos Town is the capital of Zåkynthos. Many of its Neoclassical buildings were demolished by the 1953 earthquake, but its paved streets and squares, filled with bakeries, cafés, boutiques, and jewelry stores, are still a joy to explore on foot.

The town's main church, Agios Dionysios , which houses the relics of the town's patron saint, dates from 1708 and was reconstructed in 1954. For spectacular views over town and the port, go up to the village of Bohali (2.5 kilometers) to the ruined Venetian castle , set in a park with pine trees. This attraction was also largely destroyed by the earthquake, but you can still see the main gate (bearing the Lion of St. Mark, the symbol of Venice), the outer walls, and battlements.

Byzantine Museum

On the main square in Zakynthos Town , this purpose-built museum displays religious icons, frescoes, and sculptures from the island's churches and monasteries, dating from the 12th century onwards. You'll see Byzantine icons carved into wood and there are two rooms dedicated to 18th-century oil paintings. There's also a scale model of the town from around 1950, giving you some idea of how it looked before the devastating 1953 earthquake.

Address: Solomos Square, 29100 Zakynthos Town

Roma Mansion

Built in the 1660s, this proud mansion is one of the few old buildings to have survived the 1953 earthquake, which wiped out most of Zakynthos Town. It is owned by the Roma family, who decided to renovate it and opened it to the public in 2007. Inside, you can see period furniture, paintings, and books, giving you some idea of how local aristocrats lived in the centuries prior.

Address: Louka Carrer 19, Zakynthos Town 29100

Blue Caves

On the northern tip of the island, at Cape Skinari, you'll find the most spectacular so-called Blue Caves. Inside, the bright blue sea reflects the color of the sky, which is mirrored off the walls of the caves and creates an absolutely magical azure and sapphire light scheme. You can visit the Blue Caves in a small glass-bottom boat, which departs from Agios Nikolaos (on the northeast coast, 32 kilometers from Zakynthos Town), or as part of the longer round-the-island cruise from Zakynthos Town.

Keri Caves

On the southwest coast, 14 kilometers from Zákynthos Town, close to the village of Kerí , a row of dramatic caves opens directly onto a crystal-clear turquoise sea, and exploring them with a mask and snorkel or scuba dive tank is one of the top things to do on the island – the lighting effects of the sun reflecting through the water and onto the cave walls makes for some amazing photos and video. It's possible to visit the caves as part of an organized excursion, or rent a boat and go independently.

Porto Limnionas

With crystal-clear, blue-green water set against a backdrop of cliffs and caves, Porto Limnionas is one of the top secluded swimming spots on the island. In a wild location down an only recently paved road, not far from the small village of Agios Leon, it is gaining in popularity each year, and in the height of summer can get crowded. Sun-loungers can be rented from two local restaurants with terraces fronting the sea, and once in the water there is good snorkeling, along with caves and even an underwater bridge.

Gerakas Beach

On the southeast coast, eight kilometers south of ZĂĄkynthos town , the wide bay of LaganĂĄs is home to several blissful stretches of sandy beach. Since the 1980s, it has been the island's top resort, with budget accommodation attracting young visitors in search of sea, sun, and fun.

This area is also the breeding ground for the loggerhead sea turtle, which is an endangered species, known for being very timid. An estimated 1,300 loggerhead turtles live around Laganas Bay and are protected in the Zakynthos National Marine Park, which was founded in 1999 to limit access to certain parts of the beach during the nesting season. To learn more, visit the park's exhibition center in Dafni, at the east end of Laganas Bay.

Official site: www.nmp-zak.org

Askos Stone Park

A must-do for animal lovers, Askos Stone Park is in the north of the island, close to the village of Volimes , 30 kilometers from Zakynthos Town . It's highly recommended for children – animals here include deer, raccoons, peacocks, and tortoises, as well as a pony, donkey, goats, and chickens. You get a map and a bottle of water with the entrance ticket, and there are attendants in the park who can explain where the animals are from and how to feed them.

Xigia Sulphur Beach

Xigia Sulphur Beach definitely has a bit of an eggy smell about it, but it's beautiful nonetheless. Located down a rocky incline (wear proper shoes), the white pebble sand beach is set within a secluded cove, protected on three sides by sheer cliffs. The water is quite beautiful here, especially around midday, when the sun is directly overhead and makes the pebbles gleam.

Stepping into the sea, you can feel the sulphur in the water and also in the mud it forms. Bathing in sulphur is believed to have therapeutic qualities, from helping to reduce muscle and bone pain to healing skin problems. The sulphur comes from a spring that can be seen in a small crack between the cliff walls. It oozes out as a milky white substance with a distinct odor, and turns the water around it a little cloudy.

The beach is located on the island's northeastern coast. It is actually comprised of a few different beaches in a row, but the one on the north end is the prettiest. It is easiest to access with a car, although you can attempt via a combination of public transport and then taxi, but this means changing buses twice if you're coming from Zakynthos Town.

Luxury Hotels:

  • For five-star luxury steps from the beach, The Lesante Luxury Hotel & Spa in Tsilivi village is a great choice. It features inviting indoor and outdoor pools and a complimentary breakfast buffet.
  • If you're traveling with the family and looking for a luxe sleep with space to move around, check out Erietta Luxury Apartments . These are located just five minutes from Zakynthos Town.
  • Also try the Olea All Suite Hotel . It is a five-star property with a rustic-luxe vibe.

Mid-Range Hotels :

  • Balcony Hotel is a solid, good-value choice in the mid-range bracket. This family-owned property is just a short walk to the beach, comes with sea views, and serves an excellent breakfast.
  • Another top mid-range choice in the Kalamaki resort area is Hotel Venus & Suites .

Budget Hotels :

  • Contessa Hotel is a family-run, good-value option in Argassi. Breakfast is included, there are sea views, a rooftop restaurant, and an outdoor pool.
  • Another option in this price range is Athina Apts in Kalamaki. These air-conditioned apartments are near the beach and restaurants, and parking is free.

Things to do in Zakynthos, Greece

The Ultimate Guide for Visiting Zakinthos Independently

Last Modified: April 12, 2024 //  by  Anda //   Leave a Comment

Zakynthos (also known as Zante) is one of the major Ionian Islands – a mesmerizing archipelago located along the western coast of mainland Greece. Due to its spectacular white cliffs, hidden coves, as well as the famous Shipwreck Beach, Zakynthos became one of the most popular islands in Greece.

We recently visited the island and had a wonderful time, but also learned a lot of things that we wish we knew before our trip. So we decided to put together a guide that will come in very handy for those who want to visit Zakynthos independently.

Table of Contents

How to Reach Zakynthos from Mainland Greece

When to visit the island, best way to explore zakynthos, renting a boat in zakynthos, boating on the northside of the island – best attractions, boating on the southside of the island – best attractions, visit cameo island, go swimming at porto limnionas, stroll along the port promenade, walk to the navagio beach viewpoint, swim at dafni beach, walk around zakynthos town, xigia beach (“sulphur beach”), step inside agios dionysios church, visit the old venetian fortress, go wine tasting, enjoy dinner at the windmill taverna, where to stay when visiting zakynthos, how many days to spend in zakynthos.

Zakynthos was one of the five islands we visited during our Ionian Sea itinerary. We rented a car in Athens , crossed the Peloponnese peninsula and then embarked on ferry. From mainland Greece you can reach Zakynthos either by ferry or by plane.

Ferry crossings to/from the island are available throughout the year and depart daily from the port of Killini, a seaside town on the western side of the Peloponnese . The journey lasts about an hour. During the high season, there is also a local ferry that connects Zakynthos with Kefalonia island.

Ferry Crossing to Zakynthos, Greece

In summer, during the months of July and August, there are also direct ferry connections between Zakynthos and the towns of Bari and Brindisi, in Italy. But this route is 17 hours long, so it’s not very popular.

If you want to fly to Zakynthos, there are direct flights from many European cities as well as from Athens, Kefalonia and Corfu, in Greece. The flight from Athens takes 50 minutes. The three main airlines operating this route are SkyExpress, Olympic and Aegean.

The peak season in Zakynthos is in the summer (June, July and August) when the weather is perfect for swimming and sunbathing. At this time of year you’ll get almost permanent sunshine and virtually no rainfall, but temperatures can be very high sometimes, reaching 39Âș-40ÂșC (100ÂșF). But summer is also the busiest time of the year, when hotels fill up to capacity and prices are at the peak.

The low season is from late fall to early spring (November to April). Although the weather stays nice for the most part, the water is too cold for swimming (around 60ÂșF). Because not many people travel to Zakynthos during the low season, most hotels and restaurants shut down from late fall to spring.

image depicting Zakynthos in the fall

Autumn on the other hand offers the best of all worlds. In September and October the weather is perfect for swimming and sunbathing with daily highs reaching 26ÂșC (78ÂșF) and water temperatures going as high as 28ÂșC (82ÂșF). Prices are also lower in fall and tourists are fewer. Because fall in Greece  is generally warm and pleasant, those who travel regularly to these islands consider September and October the best months for visiting Zakynthos.

Zante is mostly known for its breathtaking coastline with white pebble beaches and turquoise waters. Many of these beaches can be reached by land, but because the island is surrounded by colossal limestone cliffs many can only be accessed by boat.

Quads for rent in Zakynthos

The best way to visit the island is by car and by boat. Although there is a local bus service (called KTEL ) that goes to some of the tourist sites, buses do not serve the entire island. So without a car, a scooter, or a quad you won’t be able to get around in Zakynthos.

Hiring a boat in Zakynthos is the only way you can see its magnificent white cliffs and hidden coves. Depending on your goal and budget, you can either rent a boat for the day and drive it yourself (you don’t need a boating license), or you can hire a boat with a captain.

We did both. On our first day in Zakynthos we hired a boat tour with a skipper who took us on the north side of the island. On the second day, we rented a boat and drove around the Southside by ourselves. So here are the pros and cons for each option:

Boating in Zakynthos

Renting a Boat with a Skipper

Renting a boat with a skipper can cost anywhere from €200 to €350+ depending on the kind of watercraft you want. The tour lasts roughly 4-5 hours. Skippers are usually locals who have a lot of experience of sailing the area.

The advantage of hiring a boat with a captain is that you get to kick back and relax as your captain takes you from spot to spot along the coast. These guys know the coastline like the back of their hand, so thy will show you hidden spots and glide the boat smoothly through hidden obstacles. They will also tell you stories about these places that you may not hear anywhere else.

Boating with a skipper in Zakynthos

The disadvantage of hiring a boat with a skipper is that you won’t have much privacy and you’ll only get to spend 4-5 hours at sea. But for most people this will be enough.

Renting a Boat without a Skipper

On the other hand, renting a boat without a captain on Zakynthos can be cheaper and more enjoyable. Depending on the season, you can expect to pay between €120 – €180/day for a small boat. The advantage of driving the boat yourself is that you get to spend an entire day at sea, stop wherever you want, swim in crystal clear water and sunbathe on secret beaches.

And don’t worry about getting lost. Most boats have trackers, so if you wander off the right path they soon come out and get you back on track.

Boating in Zakynthos

The disadvantage of renting a boat without a captain is that you get A LOT more stress! The relatively shallow waters along the coast often have unexpected obstacles, so if you don’t keep your eye on the water surface constantly, you may hit a huge rock and ruin the boat. Also, you’ll only get a limited amount of gasoline, so you can’t really go quite as far as you’d like.

Where to Rent a Boat in Zakynthos

There are plenty of different companies offering boat rentals all around the island of Zakynthos, but the biggest concentration of rentals is around the northern and the southern part of the island.

Boat rental booths along the shore in Zakynthos

If you want to visit Navajo Beach and the Blue Caves (in the north) your best bet would be around Porto Vromi, or Alykes/Alykanas up to Cape Skinari. You’ll see the rental booths along the beach.

Renting a boat in Zakynthos

For Keri Caves and Marathonisi Island in the south, you should go down to Laganas or Keri Beach.

It’s difficult to say which side of Zakynthos is more spectacular. Both are unbelievably scenic offering spectacular views of the cliffs, secret coves and crystal clear waters. Here is what you can see on the north side of the island:

The Shipwreck/Navagio Beach

There is no land access to this beautiful beach which is surrounded by vertical white cliffs. However, until recently you could anchor down in Navajo Bay and swim to the shore to see the shipwreck upclose.

Shipwreck Beach seen from above

But in September 2022 a 5.4 magnitude earthquake occurred between Kefalonia and Zakynthos causing a big rockfall next to the beach. Some rocks from the wall caused a big wave, which in turn flipped several small boats in the bay. Although no human life was lost, the beach remains closed due to the high risk or landslides in this area.

The Hidden Cave

Just on the other side of Navagio Beach you’ll find a beautiful cave called the Hidden Cave .  At low tide, a little opening forms in the wall from where you can swim inside the cave. Once you pass through the narrow entrance you’ll find yourself in a 20 meters high cave. It’s nice to swim in the turquoise-blue water, especially if there are no other people around!

Hidden Treasure Cove

‱ Blue caves  â€“ The Blue Caves are located on the northern coastline of Zakynthos, east of Cape Skinari. They can only be accessed by the sea, so you’ll need to rent a bot to get here. The serenity and beauty of these limestone arches and caves is incredible! Gliding in and out of them with the boat or swimming in the turquoise waters around is an experience you won’t soon forget.

tourist information zakynthos town

‱ Hidden coves/beaches . There are so many beaches like these around this part of the island, with white sand, turquoise waters and vertical cliffs above. Stop to as many of them as you can to enjoy a good swim and some quiet time.

Hidden cove on Zakynthos Island

The southern side of Zakynthos is equally spectacular and quite easy to navigate. But you should keep your eyes on the water for hidden rocks that may hide right beneath the surface. This side also has a lot of small, friendly beaches on which you can stop for a quick swim. Here is what you can see when boating on the Southside:

‱ Marathonisi, aka “Turtle Island”

Marathonisi is a tiny uninhabited island just 3 km off Keri Beach. This seemingly insignificant isle provides one of the last remaining sanctuaries for the endangered Loggerhead turtles in Zante (scientific name: Caretta Caretta). We weren’t able to see turtles near this island, but that’s probably because we didn’t know where to look. But if you rent a boat with a captain you may be able to see some as the locals usually know where to find them.

Marathonisi Island

‱ Keri Caves

Keri Caves took me by surprise and ended up being my favorite spot of the day. We went inside many of them through keyholes in the cliffs, swam around a bit and had a great time.

Keri Caves

‱ Mizithres Cliff Rock

This fabulous limestone cliff is as impressive to see from above as it is to see from the water. Technically the rental boats are supposed to turn around from this point, but we ventured a little past the rock to catch a better view of it in the afternoon sun.

Mizithres Cliff Rock

‱ Small Beaches

Just like the north shore, the southern part of Zakynthos has a large number of small beaches tucked between the limestone cliffs. The water around them is calm and clear, so be sure to stop at as many of them as you can.

Other Things to Do in Zakynthos Besides Boating

Trust me when I say that Zakynthos is one of Greece’s most unique islands. Yes, all the Greek islands are beautiful and worth visiting, but Zante is truly special! Not only does it have a magnificent coastline dotted with gorgeous beaches, hidden coves and impressive white cliffs, but it also has a great deal of inland attractions.

So here are some of the best things you can do on your holiday in Zakynthos:

This beautiful small island located off shore of Laganas was once part of Zakynthos, but in 1633 a big earthquake separated this piece of land from the main island. Cameo Island got its name from the church on it, which has been there sixteen centuries. Today the small island is easy to reach on foot via a short wooden bridge.

Cameo Island at night

Because it’s a private island they charge a small entrance fee, but that comes with a souvenir or a free welcome drink at the beach bar. The island is often used for wedding receptions and other parties

If you were to visit just one spot on the island of Zakynthos, I’d say go to Porto Limnionas. This is one of the beautiful but most hidden places on the entire island. To get there you have to pass through the mountain village of Agios Leon and from there drive down down to the sea, following the signs. The road ends in a small square where you can park. Next to the parking you’ll see a picturesque taverna below which are two terraces with loungers and umbrellas.

view of Porto Limnionas

From there a few steps carved in the rock lead you to the stupefying cove with turquoise, translucent waters. The water is so clear that you can see the bottom from high up, on the cliff. Except for the restaurant and a small improvised dive shop, there are no other facilities here.

view of Porto Limnionas

Even though it’s pretty well hidden, Porto Limniona is packed during the summer months. But if you come off season, or very early morning, you may have this place all to yourself.

Right next to Agios Dionysios Church starts a lovely walk of roughly a mile along the seafront. There are loads of cafes and pubs along the promenade, a few small fishing boats moored here, fishermen selling their catch to passers by and quite a few benches where you can sit and admire the view.

strolling in the Port of Zante

Navagio is one of the most beautiful and photographed beaches in the world, so no wonder visitors flock to visit it. While the beach itself can be accessed only by boat, the best view of the beach and the shipwreck is actually from the vertical cliffs that surround it. But it takes a little work to get to the viewpoint where those iconic Navagio images are captured.

walking to the viewpoint of Shipwreck beach

The viewpoint is about an hour away from Zakynthos Town, on the road to Anafonitria Monastery. The route is marked with signs for Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach. There is a small parking lot next to the signs and right beyond that you’ll see a suspended platform surrounded by railings. However, the best views of the beach are not at this point. If you continue to the right of the platform, you’ll see a narrow trail that goes along the cliffs’ edge. If you continue on it, you’ll get to a small promontory from where you’ll have a much better view.

Gate closing the entrance to Shipwreck vista point

The hike is considered pretty dangerous as in some places it gets pretty close to the edge of the cliff. Since accidents happened here in the past, the local authorities closed the access to the trail with a wire fence. But eager visitors managed to cut an opening into it, so you can proceed at your own risk. If you decide to venture on it, be very cautions and make sure you wear good hiking shoes, NOT flip flops!

This is a beautiful sandy beach with crystal-clear waters is located in the southeastern part of Zakynthos. If you visit the beach off season chances are you’ll find just a few people here, but in summer this place is packed.

images depicting Dafni Beach

Access to the beach is on a narrow dirt road that that is kind of difficult to drive on. At the end of the road there is a free parking lot from where you’ll descend to the beach. Next to the beach entrance there is a nice restaurant that serves food and refreshments.

view of Loggerhead Sea Turtles

Daphne is one of the most beautiful beaches on the Vasilikos Peninsula and one of the places where Loggerhead Sea Turtles come for breeding.

Zakynthos Town is the capital of the island and the best way to experience it is to walk around. The most popular part of the city center is the area between Alexander Roma Street and 21st Maiou Street up to San Marco Square. Here you’ll find a series of shops of various kinds, bars and restaurants. In the evenings, the city center comes alive with tourists looking for places to eat, have a drink or just buy souvenirs.

Pedestrian area in Zakynthos Town

Zante Town has a few beautiful squares the largest of which is Dionysios Solomos square. Here you’ll see the Byzantine Museum and the statue of the poet Dionysios Solomos, who wrote the national anthem of Greece.

At first sight, Xigia Beach may not seem any different from other small beaches you may have seen. But what makes it special is the fact that the waters here contain a large amount of sulphur, which is very noticeable as you approach the beach. Hence the nickname Sulphur Beach .

View of Xigia Beach on Zakynthos

The sulphur comes from the neighboring caves and has healing properties. Sulphuros waters have antifungal and antibacterial properties that can soothe and even help heal the skin. They are also good for arthritis pain. But Xigia Beach is nice to visit even if you don’t suffer from any of these conditions.

Located in Old town, just a few steps from the port, you’ll see the imposing building of Agios Dionysios – the largest church in Zante. Agios Dionysos is considered the patron saint and the protector of the island.

Agios Dionysios church in Zante

The first chapel to honor the saint was built on this site in the 18th century, but it was completely destroyed in an earthquake in 1893 and then rebuilt in the 20th century. The building survived the devastating earthquake of 1953, which is why the locals consider it a miracle.

Above Zakynthos Town, on the hill of Bohali, stand the remains of an old Venetian Castle. During the Venetian rule, the Castle was the capital of Zakynthos island. The fortress was built on the ruins of an ancient acropolis, named Psofida. The date of the construction is uncertain, but it probably goes back to the 1480s, when the Venetians occupied the island.

view of the old Venetian castle in Zante

Sadly, not much is left of the Venetian Castle that once stood guard over the city below. The strong earthquakes that have frequently struck the island destroyed the fortification almost completely. But whatever traces remain, will still give you an idea of how beautiful this castle once was.

Wine tasting may not be your first priority when you visit Zante, but don’t miss the opportunity to taste the island’s famous wines if you are here. There are over 19,000 acres dedicated to growing vines on Zakynthos and dozens of different grape varieties.

grapes growing in Zakynthos

The island is famous for its red  Avgoustiatis  (which has been grown here since the 14th century) and yellow-gold  Robola , so be sure to taste them.

Zakynthos has plenty of restaurants, cafĂ©s and tavernas serving fresh, local specialties. We eat in quite a few places but were particularly impressed with the Windmill Taverna. The restaurant is located on the southern part of the island, in the Vasilikos Peninsula. We loved the view of the sea and of the Marathonisi Island from the restaurant’s terrace!

View of food plate at Windmill Taverna

On the menu you will find many choices and we suggest you to try the bruschetta with aromatic oil, cherry tomatoes and parmesan, the mixed salad of young salad leaves with Greek prosciutto, gruyere cheese and balsamic dressing and the fresh fish. They serve delicious Greek dishes cooked with the purest ingredients. The service was also very prompt, so I can highly recommend this place

You’ll find plenty of hotels all over the island of Zakynthos. Whether you choose to stay in the northern or southern part of the island, you’ll find excellent lodging everywhere. Most first time visitors however choose to stay in Zakynthos Town, which is known for its boutique hotels nestled in the hills overlooking the Ionian Sea.

$$ Avalon Palace Hotel . This is a mid-range hotel located above the port of Zakynthos. We stayed here in October and because it was off-season they upgraded us to a suite with a private pool overlooking the sea. However, all the rooms are comfortable and modern, and breakfast is served up on the highest floor, on a beautiful terrace overlooking the sea.

room with private pool at Avalon Palace Hotel

$$ Palatino Hotel . This is a nice hotel located near the beach in Zakynthos, just a few minutes walk to Solomos Square. The hotel offers sea view rooms, free breakfast, free parking and has a good restaurant on the premises.

$$$ Lesante Classic – Preferred Hotels & Resorts . This is a luxury hotel located at Tsilivi Beach. The hotel offers complimentary breakfast and parking and features a nice swimming pool. Rooms are spacious and elegant. The hotel is kids friendly and has a playground and a playroom.

Most people visit Zakynthos as part of an island hopping itinerary and therefore wonder how much time to allocate to each island. When building your itinerary you should take into consideration the time you will use for your transfers between the islands.

Between checking in/out of hotels, going to and from the ports and the actual time used for the journey, you’ll spend the best part of one full day on the road. My suggestion is to plan around 3-4 days in Zakynthos to properly enjoy all its beautiful sites. Keep in mind that you’ll need two full days just for boating around the Northside and Southside. Conservatively, you should spend at least 3 full days on the island.

tourist information zakynthos town

Zakynthos ( Greek : ΖάÎșÏ…ÎœÎžÎżÏ‚), also called Zante (its Italian name), is the third largest island in the Ionian Sea , off the west coast of Greece . The island is named after Zacynthos, son of legendary Arcadian chief Dardanos.

While Ios and Kos are associated with partying, and Rhodes and Crete with families, Zakynthos is something in between. The majority of beaches and towns are along the south and east coasts, as the west and north coasts are extremely mountainous often with cliffs dropping many hundreds of feet straight into the sea.

Understand [ edit ]

Zakynthos, due to mild winter rainfall, is an extremely lush island. The Venetians, who conquered it, referred to it as Il fiore del Levante , the flower of the Levant. March-May is a particularly rewarding time to visit; the island has relatively few tourists, the Easter parade takes place, and the island blooms spectacularly with a myriad of colorful flowers and lush green hills.

Zakynthos, like its neighbour Kefalonia , was heavily affected by the massive earthquake of 1953 and subsequently a lot of its stunning Venetian architecture was sadly destroyed. Ruins still lay in some parts of the island due to this. The main town was completely rebuilt and still has an uncanny resemblance to Venice 's San Marco Square. It is well worth taking a look at.

The beautiful white cliffs that plunge into azure seas towards Keri have to be seen to be believed; the water is wonderfully clear and it is worth hiring a boat to see such sights.

History [ edit ]

Archaeological excavations have proved that Zakynthos was inhabited from the Neolithic Age. The island is first mentioned by the Greek poet and writer Homer. In his masterpieces, the Iliad and the Odyssey , he stated that the first inhabitants of Zakynthos were the son of King Dardanos, Zakynthos (which the island has been named after), of Troy and his men who settled around 1500-1600 BCE.

Over the years the island was conquered by King Arkeisios of Kefalonia , and after him Ulysses from Ithaca. Later on Zakynthos became the first independent democracy in the Hellenic area, as a treaty was signed and it lasted over 650 years.

In the summer of 1953, Zakynthos was hit by two severe earthquakes, resulting in the total destruction of the islands infrastructure and most of its state archives. The most powerful of those quakes registered 7.3 on the Richter scale occurred on 12 August and was felt throughout almost the entire country. In Zakynthos Town only three buildings were left standing: the St. Dionysios Cathedral, the National Bank building, and the church of St. Nicholas "tou Molou". The rebuilding of the island was subject to a very rigid anti-seismic code, and has thus withstood several moderate and powerful earthquakes with a minimal amount of damage, including one in 2005.

Mining has been common on the island. Today, however, the only activity is two quarries on the mountain range in the western part of the island. A small mountain on Zakynthos west side was mined during the late 20th-century, though it is no longer in use. Today tourism is the most important source of income and Zakynthos is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ].

Zakynthos is served by one airport (ZTH), towards the south end of the island near to the resort of Laganas and Kalamaki. It receives both international and domestic flights. Almost all international flights are chartered flights from other European cities during the holiday season (May-October). Domestic flights are available between Zakynthos airport and Athens , served by the national airline Olympic Airlines. There are usually two flights a day to Athens. The journey time to Athens is approximately 1 hour. EasyJet flies to Zante from nearly all UK airports and flights are usually Thursday to Sunday (2010). There are also flights by WizzAir to Budapest every Tuesday.

The airport is closed during the night. Queues are very long, so arrive early. Free Wi-Fi. A lot of electric sockets. No public buses go to the airport from the city. Taxis can be ordered, which cost €10-15. The airport can be reached from the city centre by foot in approximately 1Âœ hours. Quite easy to find the way, but beware of the dogs on the way (especially close to KTEL bus station).

By ship [ edit ]

Zakynthos has ferry links to Kyllini on the Greek mainland from Zakynthos Town. €8.20 per person and €38 per car. Ferries to Kefalonia can be boarded at Aghios Nikolas, on the northeast tip of the island.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

By public transport [ edit ]

There are buses that go between the most crowded areas of the island. Ask around and there will be no pain in finding the bus stops. However, bus services on the island are rather infrequent and sometimes unreliable. Taxis, however, are not too expensive.

By car [ edit ]

The best way to get around is by rental car. There are literally dozens of rental agencies on the island besides the big ones. Preferably get a 4WD car, as some attractions are off the main roads. Beware of the condition of some of the roads. The smaller roads may well have pot holes and even the "better" roads are extremely slippery. Also beware of other drivers. If you assume everyone else on the road is out to get you and drive accordingly it's probably the best way of dealing with it. Due to the island being fairly small and only a few major towns it's quite hard to get lost as most roads either go eventually to Zakynthos town or to Volimes in the north and you can work it out from there. Road signs are sporadic and some are bi-lingual with English and Greek, some are Greek alone.

Also watch out for scooters, especially in the main tourist areas. 37.848816 20.752963 1 Zante Car Hire , Zante Airport , ☏ +30 2695 052828 , [email protected] . Delivers cards to and collects them from any location in Zante, and operates offices in the Zante Airport, Zante Port, Kalamaki, Tsilivi, Laganas and Vassilikos.

By motorbike/scooters [ edit ]

Rental agencies abound. However, scooters may be somewhat painful to ride around the island, because it is very hilly, so get something with a little bit more power.

By bicycle [ edit ]

Cycling is a pleasant way of navigating the southern and central parts of the island, if somewhat impractical in the rougher, hillier terrain of the north. Bike hire is available in all but the smallest of resorts, costing around €4-8 per day, with discounts available for multi-day hire periods. A basket and a lock will usually be included but hire shops are very unlikely to rent helmets, so bring your own if required. Bike Ride Zakynthos offers tours of the island if you don't fancy doing it alone.

By private boat [ edit ]

Visit the famous shipwreck "Navagio" , the blue Caves, the Keri Caves, Marathonisi island, the Mizithres Rocks and many hidden beaches by renting a private boat. Available at Zakynthos main port, at Ag.Sostis port or Ag.Nikolaos port, there are many companies that offer boat rentals with or without skipper.

  • 37.93167 20.70443 1 Blue Caves ( East of Cape Skinari, in the northern part of the island ). A series of geological formations have created the caves. Natural arches have been carved out by erosion, but these caves are most famous for the colour of the water in its deepest hollows, a deep azure color which is most striking in the morning when the light is at its brightest, hence the name Blue Caves . Kianoun Cave is the biggest of the caves. In order to reach there you can hire a boat or go on a tour. There are Blue Caves at 3 locations around the island: 1. At Cape Skinari on the northern tip of the island. These are the most spectacular. There are several boats offering trips from Agios Nikolaos Port, also from Makris Gialos Alikes and Alykanas. You can hire a "self-drive" motorboat for the day from several operators in Alykanas to visit the blue caves and then spend a leisurely afternoon exploring the northeast coast on your way back. These caves are also on the itinerary of the large round-the-island cruise ships operating out of Zakynthos town. 2. Keri - also pretty good. 3. Porto Vromi - Not as spectacular, you will visit these as part of the tours to the shipwreck.

Beaches [ edit ]

  • Agios Nikolaos . One of the best beaches on the island. You can get there by free shuttle services from Laganas, Kalamaki, and Argasi, but to get a ticket to get the shuttle back again you have to pay to use a sun lounger (€4). Water sports (diving, jet skis, etc.) are offered, as well as a big British-run beach bar. This is not to be confused by the Agios Nikolaos village in the north of the island which shares little in common with this one.
  • Alikes/Alykanas . A long stretch of beach in front of the 2 resorts with plenty of facilities, sunbeds, watersports. To the west of the Skourtis River mouth is Alikes, to the east is Alykanas. The Alikes section is quite narrow and also quite stony in places, backed by numerous bars and restaurants, mostly competing to be the least Greek. The best sand is to be found at the eastern end, close to the little fishing port of Agios Kyriaki, where the Neraida Taverna offers friendly service and traditional, freshly-cooked local dishes, backed by live traditional music in the evening. There's also a "shipwreck", a sunken wooden sailing yacht sitting in quite shallow water which kids (and grown-up kids!) can wade out to and climb all over. A walk of around 1km from Alykanas Resort, through old Alykanas village, brings you to the peaceful Xehoriati Beach . This narrow stretch of fine sand has beautiful views across to Kefalonia and the Peloponnese , and shelves out very slowly offering safe swimming with a number of rocky reefs for interesting snorkelling. Xehoriati is served by 2 restaurants vying to have the most incongruous name. The apparently native-North-American-themed Redskins is run by a friendly young Italian couple serving up their native cuisine, while Shoestring (nothing to do with the 1970s UK TV detective), up a flight of steps at the eastern end of the beach, offers typical tourist taverna fare at lunchtime and close to a "fine-dining" menu in the evenings (save room at any time of day for the excellent home-made desserts), all with stunning views. There's also a mini-market about 150 m from the beach for snacks, chilled drinks.
  • Dafni ( access to this beach is via a steep hilly road between Argassi and Vassilikos ). This is a lovely sandy beach in the marine reserve with a complete ban on traffic. It's a quiet beach that has only a few locals on the beach, tavernas for food and drink, along with sunbeds.
  • Gerakas ( at the far south of the Vassilikos peninsula inside the total marine exclusion zone ). The main loggerhead turtle nesting beach. This is a large long and wide sandy beach and gently shelving shore with sun beds and umbrellas provided. Some areas of the beach are off limits due to turtles nesting and the beach is closed at dusk for the same reason. There is a steep hill or steps leading from the cliff top to get down to the beach. A car park is provided but in busy periods this can fill up. Also near here are several tavernas for food and toilets.
  • Kalamaki to Laganas . The resort of Kalamaki shares a long uninterrupted sandy beach that runs from there to Laganas a few miles away. In some places it can be crowded, but the further towards the middle you get the fewer people you find and given its size it's possible to find somewhere quiet.
  • Psarou ( 12 km NE of Zante town ). Small sandy beach with crystal blue and shallow waters ideal for children. There are many tavernas offering home cooked food. At the center of the beach you can enjoy the Caffe del Mar by Kostas.
  • Tsilivi . The family resort of Tsilivi boasts a wide and long sandy beach, watersports, sunbeds, and ample car parking.

Some beaches in Zakynthos are also unofficial nudist beaches .

Do [ edit ]

Zakynthos is not so much an island for children. The water park here is small and rather hard to get to as compared to that in Corfu. Most resorts there are relatively low-key and tourist booths are more likely to offer excursions to neighboring islands or the Greek mainland rather than concentrating on Zakynthos' beauty. This is a shame, because it is still an island where mountainside villages and hidden coves await discovery by the discerning traveller. It is well worth hiring a car.

tourist information zakynthos town

  • Round the Island Circuit . Due to the small size of the island, with a rental car it's perfectly possible to drive a complete lap of the island stopping at some interesting places on the way. For example, starting at Zakynthos town, drive north along the coast road and visit Tsilivi. Continue past Alykes and Alykanes. The scenery gets more impressive as you climb towards the mountains. The road then drops into the picturesque resort of Agios Nikolaos. From there you traverse the north coast passing Navagio (aka shipwreck) and the viewing platform and Volimes in the mountains where local arts and crafts can be bought. Then to the west coast travelling south the bay of Limnionas is extremely pretty, quiet with just a taverna that serves excellent food. Further south from there you have Kampi with stunning clifftop views and eventually Keri lighthouse with more stunning views, especially at sunset.
  • Scuba Diving . Although, like the rest of Greece, the area is devoid of fish due to massive overfishing, the south of the island has a few decent sites such as "The Arch" and Keri Caves. Numerous dive operators work out of Laganas, Keri, and elsewhere.
  • Turtle Spotting . The endangered loggerhead turtle uses the beaches for its nesting and a marine reserve has been established in the south around the Laganas Bay to protect these (although it appears to be completely ignored outside tourist season) Many outfits in Laganas, Kalamaki and even Vassilikos offer short or full day trips including swim stops to look for these turtles. You stand most chance of seeing them between May and early July with the numbers decreasing after this. These shy, gentle creatures nest in the south of the island during the spring and summer months, but their numbers are threatened of late, and one of the biggest culprits is undoubtedly mass tourism. Eggs that have been laid on the beaches of Laganas and Kalamaki have in the past been smashed by deck chairs or dug up by children. Turtles have been killed on Zakynthos roads after having been disoriented by the bright neon lights of the bars they mistake for the moon by which they navigate their way to the sea. Thankfully, the Greek authorities are placing emphasis on protecting the turtles with signs and volunteers reminding tourists on the beaches of their duty to respect the turtles and stay away from them. That said, several unscrupulous firms on the island run "turtle tours", whereupon a tourist can pay to take a boat ride to "spot" the turtles. This is not a good idea. The turtles are easily distressed by this intrusion, and this has a knock-on effect on their breeding and hence is contributing to the threat to their very survival.

Eat [ edit ]

Traditional agricultural products are olive oil, thyme honey, currants, and wine, which can be purchased at roadside stalls or in the villages.

Zakynthos is a growing tourist island, and hence along with traditional Greek fare, one will find Anglicized cuisine. In Laganas, travellers would be more hard-pressed to find baklava than an English-fry up, but there are some very good places to eat Greek cuisine, and at very reasonable prices.

  • The Clear Horizon ( Amoudi, in the north of the island, towards Alikes ). Restaurant with a friendly owner who serves traditional Greek fare: baklavas , stifado , briam , at very reasonable prices in large portions, with an unrivaled view of the Ionian Sea and Kefalonia rising from the mist in the background.
  • Galini ( way off the beaten path in Vassilikos, SE of Zante town ). A traditional family-run place sprawled in the middle of the large estate where they grow their own food. Scenic ivy-clad terrace seating, rabbits running free, a children's playground and views out to sea are some of the things that will fail to distract you from the hearty traditional food served here. Island specialty kleftiko is a must.
  • Mermaids ( in the resort of Kalamaki ). Serves a good variety of Greek and international food.
  • 37.71589 20.98182 1 Mikri Plateia , Porto Roma ( from the main road from Vassilkos to Gerakas Beach, go left to Port Roma, at the first corner, you'll find it on your right ). Evenings . Many restaurants on the island claim they are authentic and traditional. This one just is, without claiming so. A trip back in time. Run by a very kind and hardworking family who makes delicious homemade food. There is no menu. You'll just get what the family has cooked that day. If they have it, the chicken from the oven is very much recommended. Their terrace at the back provides a charming view of the nearby sea, especially with a full moon, and the surrounding hills, including the many olive tree groves. And if you're lucky, someone might even join you to taste a glass of family-distilled raki from Volimes. For the food alone, worth a visit when you're near Porto Roma or Gerakas Beach.
  • 37.72009 20.98807 2 Nikos Beach Bar , Porto Roma ( just before Porto Roma go left (follow the sign), past the big house on your right hand; if you want to go through the beach, follow the beach to the left and find it above you on your left ). Whole day . The server comes to your table and, almost too fast to comprehend, tells you with a strong Greek accent what you can eat and drink. At the same time, he kindly, but unwaveringly, tries to convince you to order something specific. Usually what the men just around the corner have on the grill. If you order something else, it can take a little while, but it will be just as delicious. Both fish and lamb from the grill are recommended, as are the roasted vegetables. A delightful spot, especially in combination with the sound of the sea just below you.

Drink [ edit ]

Bars are found in abundance on Zakynthos, from the lazy beach bar to clubs to British-run establishments. The beers of choice are the Greek Mythos , Alfa and Fix , though Amstel comes a close second. Drinkers looking for a more sartorial experience are advised to check out bars in Zakynthos town. There are also the local village wines (beware: strong!), the Metaxa brandy along with the standard ouzo.

The bars of Laganas can serve pretty much anything else and caters to the young drunk tourist.

  • Athens overnight trips are available through organised tours or using scheduled KTEL bus services and the Kyllini ferry.
  • Day trip to Kefalonia - the ferry leaves Agios Nikolaos to and from this island several times daily and there are many official guided tours allowing you to visit and return. Unfortunately the scheduled bus service to Agios Nikolaos is virtually non-existent, so if you don't want to sign up with an organised tour then you will require a taxi or your own transport to link up with the ferry.
  • Olympia - There are many organised tours using the ferry from Zakynthos town to Kyllini on the mainland to visit the ancient site of the original Olympic Games (about 45 min drive from the port).

Best Things to do in Zakynthos, Greece (Ultimate Guide for First-Timers!)

Top Things to do in Zakynthos, Greece

Looking for the best things to do in Zakynthos, Greece?  This ultimate guide for first time visitors includes all the top activities, attractions, restaurants and hotels, plus everything you need to know to plan your visit to this stunning Ionian island!

Greece has always had a special place in my heart. The beautiful beaches, insanely clear blue waters, charming towns and ancient ruins all make it a top summer destination in Europe.  I’ve been to many of the popular islands in the Aegean Sea like Mykonos, Santorini and Crete so I wanted to explore a new region
Which is how I landed on the Ionian islands!

I could not have been happier with my decision as Zakynthos turned out to be one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited.

Here are the best things to do in Zakynthos, Greece!

About Zakynthos

Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is a beautiful Greek island located in the Ionian Sea, off the western coast of mainland Greece.  Zakynthos island is part of the Ionian Islands group, which includes several other islands such as Corfu, Kefalonia, Lefkada, and Ithaca.

Olive groves, charming villages, pristine beaches, and limestone cliffs are some of the island’s most iconic features. Plus, Zakynthos is world-renowned for its stunning landscapes and breathtaking turquoise waters. In fact, Navagio Beach, with its iconic shipwreck, is one of the most photographed and famous beaches in the world
You’ve most likely seen photos of it all over social media!

So, whether you’re seeking natural wonders and adventurous activities, or simply a relaxing beach vacation with scenic beauty, Zakynthos has something to offer for every type of traveler.

How to Get to Zakynthos

Like many of the popular Greek islands, Zakynthos is accessible by both air and sea!

By Air: The most common way to reach Zakynthos is by flying into Zakynthos International Airport (ZTH), also known as Dionysios Solomos Airport. Direct flights are available from tons of European cities during the tourist season (spring to fall).  London, Manchester, Rome, Naples, Amsterdam, Geneva, Paris, Budapest and Berlin are just some of the cities with direct flights to Zakynthos!

Within Greece, you’ll find direct flights from Corfu, Kefalonia, and Athens.  So if you’re planning to visit some of the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea as well as the Zakynthos, you will have to connect in Athens.

We were traveling from Budapest and wanted to visit Zakynthos but the closest direct flight we could find was to Kefalonia. So we spent a few days in Kefalonia first and then flew to Zakynthos via Sky Express.

Our flight was definitely on “island time” — there were no gate agents at the time of our scheduled departure and no employees to ask for information sending all the passengers into a little bit of panic.  But around an hour later, a gate agent showed up and we boarded our quick 25 minute flight to Zakynthos!

By Sea: Zakynthos is connected to the mainland of Greece and other nearby islands by ferry services. Ferries operate from the port town of Kyllini on the Peloponnese mainland and the island of Kefalonia. The ferry journey from Kyllini to Zakynthos takes approximately one hour, and the journey from Kefalonia is about 1 hour 20 minutes. In Zakynthos, the main ferry port is in Zakynthos Town.

Before planning your journey, make sure to check the latest travel information, flight schedules, and ferry routes, especially if you are traveling during the off-peak season.

When is the Best Time to Visit Zakynthos?

The best time to visit Zakynthos is during the summer months of June through August.  The weather is hot (temperature around 77°F to 95°F) so it’s perfect for swimming and enjoying the beaches. Of course, this is the peak tourist seasons so expect crowds and make reservations in advance!

If you prefer to go outside of high season when it’s a bit less crowded, consider visiting during the shoulder months of April, May, September or October.  Just note that the temperatures may be more mild and some businesses may not be open for the season.

Winter time in Zakynthos is colder with temperatures ranging from 50°F to 59°F.  This is the low season so most tourist-related businesses will be closed.

How Many Days Should You Spend On Zakynthos?

The number of days you need in Zakynthos depends on your travel preferences, the activities you want to experience, and whether you prefer a relaxed or more packed itinerary.

Short Stay (2-4 Days): If you have limited time, a short stay of 2 to 4 days can still allow you to explore some of the best things to do in Zakynthos. You can visit iconic beaches like Navagio Beach, experience the Blue Caves, explore Zakynthos Town, and enjoy a few leisurely days.

Longer Stay (5-10 Days): A longer stay of 5 to 10 days will give you a more comprehensive experience of the island. You can explore even more beaches, visit traditional villages, take boat trips to hidden coves, and enjoy some cultural and historical sites.   You could even take day trips to neighboring islands or the mainland!

I visited Zakynthos in just a few days and felt like I got a good feel for the island and explored plenty of places.  However, it was quite fast paced and the beaches were so beautiful that I do wish I had an extra day or two to just relax!

How to Get Around Zakynthos

There are a number of ways to get around but renting a car is definitely the best option if you plan to explore different parts of the island.

Car Rentals: Renting a car is one of the most popular and flexible ways to explore Zakynthos. Many international and local car rental agencies operate on the island, and you can pick up a rental vehicle at Zakynthos International Airport or in major towns like Zakynthos Town. The road network on Zakynthos is generally well-maintained, making it easy to navigate.

We rented a car and were able to pick it up from the airport when we arrived.  I recommend making a car reservation in advance during the peak tourist season, and make sure to reserve an automatic car if you prefer it!

Driving in Zakynthos was very easy and allowed us to explore so many different parts of the island. It gave us the freedom to visit remote beaches, villages, and attractions at our own pace!

Scooters: Scooters or mopeds are a popular choice for short-distance travel on the island. Many rental agencies offer scooters and mopeds, and you can find them in Zakynthos Town and tourist areas.

ATVs/Quad Bikes: ATVs or quad bikes are also an option for those who want to explore off-road areas and are just going short distances.

Taxis: Taxis are available in Zakynthos Town and other major towns. They are convenient for short trips or transfers to specific locations. You can find taxis at designated taxi stands or arrange for one through your accommodation.

Best Things to do in Zakynthos, Greece

Zakynthos coastline seen from the boat trip

This is hands down one of the top things to do in Zakynthos!  If you only do one activity, make it a boat tour because it’s the best way to see a lot of the island in just one day.

Plus, taking advantage of boat tours allows you to discover hidden beaches, sea caves, and scenic spots around the island that are inaccessible by land.

We opted for a private boat trip on a small boat so we could make our own itinerary. If we liked a certain spot, we could stay longer, and if we felt anywhere was too crowded
Off we went to a more secluded cove.  There are lots of boat tour companies offering these excursions so I highly recommend going the private route if you prefer to go off the beaten path and away from the crowds!

We did an all day tour; starting around 9am in Zakynthos Town and returning around 5pm.  We went around the entire island and spent the day swimming in little coves, exploring sea caves, and relaxing on secluded beaches.

We went with Alegria charter which was a comfortable boat that fit up to 10 people and included a captain, hostess, towels, snorkeling equipment, snacks and a bottle of wine.

Blue Caves, Zakynthos

One of the most well-known spots on the island is the Blue Caves, a series of sea caves with mesmerizing blue waters. The caves are only accessible by boat, and the sunlight reflecting off the water creates a magical blue hue.

We had so much fun swimming and floating in the calm turquoise waters and exploring the sea caves.  The water is so clear you can see the bottom, plus lots of colorful fish!

Aerial view of Navagio Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos, Greece

Navagio Beach

Visiting Navagio Beach, also called Shipwreck Beach, is one of the most popular things to do in Zakynthos. The beach is surrounded by towering cliffs and is accessible only by boat. The shipwreck, which gave the beach its name, adds a very unique touch to the beautiful scenery.

The shipwreck has been there since 1980 when the ship got caught in a storm.  The rumored story of the ship is that it was smuggling illegal cigarettes from Turkey to Italy. The Greek captain decided he wanted a larger cut of the profit and held the Italian crew-members at gunpoint
Until the storm came and their smuggled loot was spoiled in the wreck!

In recent years, the beach has had some rockslides due to seismic activity causing portions of the beach to be closed.  It was fully closed to the public in the summer of 2023, but it may re-open in 2024 with some visitor limitations.

We visited Navagio Beach as one of the first stops on our boat day in hopes to beat the crowds.  I was excited to visit this famous beach and eager to see if it would live up to expectations (as sometimes locations made famous by social media can be disappointing in real life!).

Aerial view of Navagio Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos, Greece

Arriving to Navagio Beach, we learned that we were not quite early enough to beat the crowds
The cove already had plenty of boats and the beach was dotted with people. Even so, I didn’t find myself disappointed… In fact, quite the opposite!

I was totally awestruck by the beauty of the cove and the dramatic sheer cliffs towering above it. And the shipwreck was equally impressive in size!  It was truly a unique beach that is 100% worth seeing.

And even more shocking was the color of the water. I was assuming that the photos of Navagio Beach had been edited making the water appear more blue than in real life.  Boy, was I wrong!

The color of the water is truly astounding and I don’t think I’ve ever seen water that blue
It literally looks like Gatorade Cool Blue!

While it seemed that many people were posted up on the beach for the day, we spent just under an hour enjoying the scenery, swimming in the water and taking photos.  Then, we were ready to move on from the crowds and explore more secluded parts of the island!

Note: we arrived just after 10am and the majority of the beach was still covered in shade due to the towering cliffs. If you want to experience the beach in full sun, I would recommend going between 12-1pm.  Just be aware that this is also the most crowded time of the day!

Navagio Shipwreck Beach

Navagio Viewpoint

While the only way to access Navagio Beach is by boat, you can still take in the views of Shipwreck Beach from the cliffs above
. 650 feet above to be exact!

The drive to the viewpoint is about 45 minutes from Zakynthos Town and is a very popular destination.  There is an official viewing platform that looks over the beach and often has a long line of tourists waiting their turn to take a photo.

After the official viewing platform, there is a rough trail that leads to more unobstructed views of the beach. However, the trail is not maintained and there seems to be conflicting information on whether tourists are allowed to access it. The cliffs can be very dangerous — several tourists have fallen while attempting to take photos — so use extreme caution!

Mizithres beach, Zakynthos

This may have been my favorite stop of our boat day and is definitely one of the best things to do in Zakynthos!

Located below the impressive Keri cliffs, “Mizithres” refers to a pair of unique rock formations located on the western coast of the island. These striking geological formations are known for their distinct appearance and are popular among visitors for both their natural beauty and the panoramic views they offer.

The small beaches surrounding the rock formation are only accessible by boat which means that they usually aren’t too crowded. Some boat excursions stop here, but you can also rent your own boat from nearby Keri Beach.  No skippers license is required and it costs around 80€ for a four hour rental.

If you know me, you know I’m obsessed with finding the most beautiful blue waters around the world
And Mizithres beach earned a spot very high on my list of the bluest waters I’ve seen!

Spending the afternoon floating in the water, swimming to different beaches and taking in the magical scenery, I was in total heaven.

Keri Cliffs

Keri Cliffs Viewpoint

Mizithres are situated near the village of Keri, on the southwestern tip of Zakynthos. The location is known for its rugged coastline and dramatic cliffs so seeing Mizithres from above is just as impressive!

Many people opt to watch the sunset from the Keri Lighthouse Restaurant where you can take in the views of Mizithres while enjoying some wine and dinner.

Zakynthos Town

Explore Zakynthos Town

Zakynthos Town, also known as Zante Town, is the capital and main port of the island. The town is home to historic attractions, as well as lots of restaurants, shops, and nightlife.  It’s also a departure point for most boat tours and excursions so it’s always bustling with activity.

In Zakynthos Town, you can explore the Venetian Castle, which offers panoramic views of the island. The castle has a rich history, and wandering through its ruins provides a glimpse into Zakynthos’ past.

And, Solomos Square is a central gathering place and a hub of activity. It is named after the Zakynthian national poet Dionysios Solomos. In the square, you’ll find the statue of Solomos and the Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos.

Floating in the sea at Nobelos beach club

Spend the Day at Nobelos

Nobelos Seaside Lodge & Bio Restaurant is a hotel, restaurant, and beach club all in one. It’s located on the northeast side of the island and has an ideal position on the coast line looking over a little islet — right next to Agios Nikolaos Beach!  The hotel has just four rooms so bookings must be made well in advance.

We spent the day at Nobelos beach club and also dined at the restaurant for lunch. Situated on a scenic cove, the beach club setting is just magical!

I spent most of the day swimming in the cove, floating in the calm waters, and snorkeling along the coastline.  The water is so clear that you can see straight to the bottom and we were able to spot lots of colorful fish and even an octopus!

Our lunch was equally spectacular.  The menu features traditional Greek specialities and fresh seafood — everything was well-presented and so delicious!

Cameo Island

Visit Cameo Island

Cameo Island is a picturesque islet located just off the coast of Laganas Bay. This rocky, small island is known for its natural beauty and has become a popular spot for weddings, events, and photography.  It’s unique as it’s only accessible from the mainland by a long wooden bridge, creating a very scenic setting.

Zakinthos island

Zakynthos, also known by its Italian name Zante, is an island of two stories. The southern and southeastern shorelines are dominated by heavy – and often low-quality – package tourism, although even here there are some attractive lower-key bases hiding just out of sight of the larger, run-of-the-mill resorts; examples include Keri and Limni Keriou in the remoter southwest. Once you leave the south behind, however, and set off to explore the rest of the island, you'll discover a different place altogether. It's one where plenty of forested wilderness and traditional rural villages remain, but it’s the spectacular scenery of the rugged west coast, where mighty limestone cliffs plummet down to unreal turquoise waters, that’s the true highlight.

The 275 Jews on Zakynthos (out of 78.000 Greek Jews) found protection in small villages from the residents and all survived, unlike the 80% of Jews on the Greek mainland. 12. Swim near Marathonisi or Turtle Island

Things to do on Zakynthos Island: Marathonisi island

Marathonisi island is a hatching ground for the loggerhead sea turtle and home to monk seals. It is uninhabited and visitors need to keep their voices down and should have left the island before sunset in summer to allow the turtles to come ashore to lay their eggs.

Things to do on Zakynthos Island: A small boat going to Marathonisi

Although the island is a protected area, unfortunately, due to the mass amount of visitors to Marathonisi (and Zakynthos as a whole), a lot of the eggs are destroyed – people allow their children to dig and get the eggs up or put their chairs on the nesting areas. I think they should stop allowing the tour to the Marathonisi during the summer, as turtles get very easily disturbed, and with hundreds of boats and snorkelers crowding them in the water, it affects their breeding and eventually their survival.

Instead of a tour you better swim in the area and you never know, you may see one of those amazing creatures swimming next to you 🙂

13. Go to Gerakas Beach

Things to do on Zakynthos Island: Gerakas beach

Gerakas is a beautiful beach of Zakynthos that stretches over a large stretch of golden sand. It is located in a bay with warm, shallow, blue waters that make it an ideal choice for families with children. Gerakas is also another nesting area for loggerhead turtles.

Things to do on Zakynthos Island: nesting areas for turtles

The beach’s access is prohibited after sunset to protect the turtles, so keep that in mind when visiting and move here with caution. There are members of the protection group on the nesting beaches and you can ask them for more information about the turtles. The left side of the beach consists of clay: Apart from swimming/sunbathing you can do a natural exfoliation on the spot.

14.  Discover the Mountain Villages

Things to do on Zakynthos Island: inland villages

On the mainland of Zakynthos, there are beautiful villages that offer a completely different side of the island. Gyri is a traditional, small village very quiet to walk around and see how authentic Zakynthos is.

Louha is one of the few places on the island where tourism has not spoiled its beauty and one of the few villages that remained intact from the 1953 earthquake. It is a beautiful place with stone-built houses, manicured courtyards, and cobbled streets.

Agios Leontas (Saint Lion) is another village that looks as if time has stopped 50 years ago surrounded by lush vegetation. Those villages are best visited by private car.

15. Kayak in Keri Caves

Things to do on Zakynthos Island: Keri caves

Keri Caves is a row of dramatic white rock caves that open directly onto a crystal-clear turquoise sea. Kayaking around the caves and then diving into the perfectly clear waters is a unique experience you can indulge in.

16. Parachute over Banana Beach

Banana, gold sand, shallow with green-blue waters beach, is as fun and playful as its name suggests. There are many water sports options but I think one of the best is to parachute above the beach! Here you will find sunbeds & umbrellas, beach bars, restaurants, water sports, and parking.

The nearby Plaka beach is smaller and we recommend it if you want more privacy.

17. Indulge in Eclectic Wine Tasting

Things to do on Zakynthos Island: Callinico winery

I don’t know about you, but I love my wine, and a visit to a winery or two, is definitely one of the best things to do on Zakynthos Island. Zakynthos has about 19,000 acres of vineyards and over 60 different varieties.

One of the best wineries you can visit is Callinico, located in the village of Kallipado since 1918. You can enjoy a wine tasting of their production a tour of their facilities and visit their dedicated museum. Learn more about the winery here.

18. Spa on Xygia beach

Things to do on Zakynthos Island: Xygia beach

Xygia is a natural spa beach with healing properties that help with arthritis (among other ailments), thanks to the elements and minerals from the nearby caves. Surrounded by dense green vegetation and emerald-green waters, it actually consists of two beaches, which are also ideal for walking. The first is a small rocky cove, with vegetation going down to the sea and a canteen, while the second has white pebbly sand and a taverna above.

It is better if you  rent a car for the day to head to Xigia Beach as it can be difficult to access public transport.

19. Taste the local cuisine of Zakynthos

Things to do on Zakynthos Island: Cheese pie with honey, seeds, and red pepper

One of my favorite things to do on Zakynthos Island (or any place I am visiting, to be honest!) is to taste the local recipes. And there is no better place to do so than visiting a Greek traditional tavern, with the most authentic ones being in mainland villages.

Zakynthos’ rich agricultural production is based on farming. Olives, citrus fruits, and vines predominate in their local recipes.

Look out for those local foods in Zakynthos:

  • Ladotyri , cheese from goat’s and sheep’s milk. It has a salty and spicy taste and is preserved in oil
  • Prenza : Fresh cheese with a creamy texture
  • Sofagiadoura , a casserole with greens, legumes, and potatoes
  • The traditional sweet of all Ionian islands , Mantolato .

20. Go to Zakynthos Monasteries

Things to do on Zakynthos Island: Anafonitria Monastery

Zakynthos has its share of Greek Orthodox Monasteries, scattered around the island and is usually set on a beautiful hill. A favorite monastery of mine is the one in Anafonitria, a small village, built 340 m high in the north of Zakynthos.

The monastery of Panagia Anafonitria (dedicated to the Holy Mother) was probably founded in the 15th century by Leonard III Tokko Count Palatino and his wife Lappa. At its entrance, there is a high medieval tower of the 15th century in which the inhabitants of the village sought shelter to protect themselves from pirate raids.

Its most important icon is a Byzantine icon of the Holy Mother from the 15th century.

Near Navagio, you will also find the monastery of Agios Georgios of Rocks, built on a small promontory from where you can admire the sea. We don’t know when it was constructed but it was destroyed by pirates in 1553 and rebuilt in Venetian style. The tower with its circular base was built to protect the monastery from any attacks.

How many days do you need in Zakynthos?

If you like doing things fast then 4 days is probably enough. But if you are like me, savoring a new place, exploring all the time, the beaches, the coves, caves, villages, museums, and monasteries, then I would advise you to stay for at least 7-8 full days on the island.

Where to Stay in Zakynthos

Things to do on Zakynthos Island: Astarte Villas swimming pool

Astarte Villas – Istar Villa with Tennis Court . Located in a green area just 10/15 minutes away from Zakynthos town or Laganas, this is an amazing 4-bedroom villa, great for a group of up to 8 persons.

Things to do on Zakynthos Island: Strofilia residences

Strofilia Stone Residences , is perfect for a family as it has a children’s playground and BBQ facilities, and is just 50 m from Climati Beach. The stone-built property offers self-catering accommodation with a balcony overlooking the Ionian Sea. What I love about it, is its large garden full of olive trees❀.

How to Get to Zakynthos Island

By Ferry (or bus/private car from Athens):

If you arrive at Athens airport you can rent a car or take the bus from Athens. The drive from Athens to Kyllini port takes approximately 3.5 hours. There are daily ferry crossings to Zante from the port of Kyllini in the Peloponnese and the trip lasts 1 hour. During the summer months, there can be up to 10 routes per day.

Book your ferry transfer with FerryScanner or FerryHopper to secure your seat, especially if you travel during the summer.

By Plane : You may be able to fly directly into Zakynthos Airport Dionysios Solomos. Many airlines fly here, including Ryanair, Air Serbia, Transavia, and Easyjet.

Island Hopping from Zante

Best Things to Do on Kefalonia Island Assos

What other Islands are near Zakynthos? The island’s location in the Ionian Sea makes it perfect for island-hopping. From Zante, you can easily travel by ferry to the following destinations:

  • Kefalonia (or Cephalonia)

How to Get around Zakynthos?

There are public buses but if you want flexibility and heat bothers you, then you’ll want something with good air conditioning and shade from the sun like a rental car . Renting ATVs is popular but I would not advise it because of the pure sun exposure.

FAQ for Zakynthos Island

When is best to go to zakynthos island.

The warm months in Greece start in May and finish in mid-October. The hottest and busiest months are July and August. My favorite time to travel in Greece is always  September and October. The large crowds are gone, families are back as the schools are open, rates are better, the sea is warm and the weather is not as hot.

Is Zakynthos a party island?

Yes and no! Laganas Bay is very wild with young crowds and on a smaller scale, Tsilivi is famed for its beach clubs, sipping a cocktail and watching the sun drop down over the water.

You can also find many bars elsewhere in Argassi, Bochali, and Zakynthos Town but in a much quieter atmosphere and certainly with no foam parties 😀

What to wear in Zakynthos?

Bring summer clothes but also a light jacket for the evenings, you never know when the wind can get slightly chill. Some suggestions for Zakynthos are:

  • Comfortable walking shoes for the slippery bays and apply plenty of organic sunscreen
  • A white linen shirt that matches perfectly with your jeans
  • A fantastic CUPSHE Bikini to swim on the beaches of Zakynthos
  • A party dress for your wild nights in Laganas!

1. Visit the famous Navagio and the Blue Caves

Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach is the most famous place on the island. Having been photographed thousands of times, the beach is considered one of the most beautiful ones on a global level. It is covered with white sand and the contrast between the bright blue waters and the rusty old shipwreck located there creates a unique scenery that attracts countless visitors every summer. Navagio can only be approached from the sea since the massive cliffs around it make it totally secluded.

The Blue Caves are located in the same region as Navagio. The caves and arches in the rocks by the sea are a naturally occurring geological formation. What makes them so special is the reflections of the seawater that makes them seem blue. It is one of the most beautiful places to visit and swim around while observing the otherworldly scenery. The underwater world around the caves is quite interesting too and ideal for snorkeling.

The only way to see Navagio Beach and the Blue Caves is by boat, so the wisest thing to do is to book a guided tour that will take you to both of these remote spots and allow you to admire some of the most beautiful landscapes in Zakynthos.

2. Swim in the waters of fantastic beaches

Similarly to the other Ionian islands, Zakynthos is famous for its beautiful beaches; hence, of course, one of the best things to do is to pay a visit to as many as possible! Most of them are covered with golden sand and have very clear waters, have both organized and unorganized parts available and you can easily get there by car.

The sandy beaches of Laganas and Banana are excellent for those who enjoy the comfort of tourist facilities, while Kalamaki is only partly organized. Agios Nikolaos and Agios Sostis are very popular among young people and water sports lovers. For visitors looking for a calmer beach with a remote location that ensures a magnificent and unspoiled natural landscape, we recommend Gerakas .

3. Stroll around Zakynthos Town

Zakynthos Town is the capital of the island. It is a relatively big town of approximately 10 thousand residents and hosts the island’s main port. With an architecture heavily influenced by Venetian, French and English colonizers, Zakynthos Town used to be a true cultural mosaic in terms of design. To get a taste of yesteryear, the best thing to do is visit Solomos and Agiou Markou Squares to see the most significant buildings. A few other old mansions that survived the earthquake are scattered around the town.

Other major landmarks worth visiting in the area are the imposing Church of Agios Dionysios with its signature bell tower, the Church of Agios Nikolaos of Molos and the ruins of the Old Venetian Castle . Zakynthos Town also has a lovely seaside promenade full of cafes, restaurants, bars and shops.

4. Stay at a wonderful hotel

Looking for a place to stay in Zakynthos? The island offers an abundance of unique accommodation options. These are our favorite boutique hotels in the area:

The building of Archontiko Maisonettes is representative of the rural culture and history. The maisonettes have been carefully renovated, preserving elements of the local tradition and design and guaranteeing a fully-equipped and comfortable accommodation. With its signature olive trees by the two-level pool, Olea offers luxurious accommodations in Zakynthos. It has a very sophisticated design, aiming at offering the ultimate relaxing experience. The authentic traditional decor and antique furniture in Alegria Villas will make you feel as if you’re a guest in a local home. Featuring a pool and a playground for children, the villas are located near the beach and are surrounded by pine and olive trees. The Bay Hotel and Suites is a seafront accommodation with ultra-modern facilities. Comfy sun beds have been placed both on the beach and by the pool for your convenience.

5. Enjoy a cruise to Marathonisi - the turtle island

Surrounded by turquoise waters and entirely covered with dense greenery, this small exotic islet is located very close to Zakynthos. Marathonisi has a golden beach, caves, natural arches and other impressive rock formations but what it is mostly known for is the sea turtles Caretta Caretta that visit this remote place frequently to lay their eggs on the beach. The best thing to do is to take part in an organized cruise and explore the exotic landscape of Marathonisi, swim in its crystal clear waters and see the turtle nests!

6. Explore Zakynthos with your own car

Who doesn't want to be totally relaxed and move at their own pace on holiday? A rental car comes with many perks, the most important being that it allows you to be flexible with your schedule and not worry about local bus schedules. 7. Feast on delicious meals at the local restaurants

The land and sea of Zakynthos endow the locals with several goods, including fish, grapes (that usually get turned into wine and raisins) and olive oil. The restaurants are aware of the high quality of the products and use them to serve visitors palatable dishes. Several types of dining establishments are available on the island so that all can enjoy the type of food they yearn for.

Some of the restaurants that we believe stand out are Fishalida in Alykes, Avli in Tsilivi, Prosilio in Zakynthos Town and Cave Damianos in Agalas.

10. Visit the Solomos Museum

The Museum of Dionyssios Solomos, Andreas Kalvos and Other Eminent Personalities of Zakynthos is located in Zakynthos Town. The beautiful neoclassical building can be easily spotted once you arrive at Agios Markos Square. The Museum, which is also the mausoleum of the Solomos and Kalvos families, exhibits small but diverse collections, including paintings, manuscripts, coats of arms, archaeological findings and coins.

More about the Museum

11. Visit the Venetian Castle

Located on a hill above Zakynthos Town, the Venetian Castle is like an open-air museum with findings dating back from the Byzantine Era to the period of the English Occupation of the Ionian Islands. Even though it has been severely damaged due to many earthquakes and wars during the past centuries, several ruins of old walls, gates, churches and other buildings can be seen in the area. In the past, it was reconstructed two times during the Venetian and English Rule.

Discover the Venetian Castle

12. Have fun doing watersports

Along the long and sandy shores of Zakynthos, visitors will find watersports centers allowing them to try a plethora of activities. Many of them are located at Agrassi, Tsilivi and Banana beaches. Saint Nicholas Watersports and Diving Center has been offering safe water sports sessions for one of the most enjoyable experiences on the island! The center provides all the equipment you need to make the most out of the bright blue waters of Zakynthos and the experienced instructors will make sure you have an incredibly good time!

Find watersports centers

13. Make a family visit to the waterpark

Visiting a water park is definitely the best thing to do if you want to gift your family a memorable fun time on Zakynthos Island! Zante Water Village is a very large water park that offers numerous slides, rides and games for all ages. No matter whether you enjoy a good adrenaline boost or prefer more chilled-out games, the Water Village provides several options. In addition, there is a mini-golf course, shops and places where you can eat or drink. The experienced staff and lifeguards will make sure everyone is having fun safely.

14. Visit picturesque churches and monasteries

Even though many of the island’s old buildings have been destroyed, several churches and monasteries are exceptionally well-preserved and interesting architecture-wise. These churches and monasteries are significant monuments of local culture and religion and they are definitely worth visiting. The easiest to find are the Church of Agios Dionysios and the Church of Agios Nikolaos Molos in Zakynthos Town. If you would like to combine sightseeing with exploring the countryside, you can visit The Monastery of Anafonitria , where Saint Dionysios, the patron saint of the island, spent his last days, or the Monastery of Skopiotissa , a place full of ruins with an amazing view of the natural setting of Zakynthos.

Discover more Sights

15. Explore the traditional Volimes village

To get a taste of the local rural life, visit Volimes village in the northwestern part of the island. It is a traditional settlement with quaint neighborhoods, some ruins and a lovely natural background consisting of fields and vegetation. Strolling around the quiet streets of the small village, you won’t notice any tourist facilities except for very few taverns and cafes frequented by locals and a few shops where you can buy traditional products. In addition to the old buildings, there are some interesting landmarks in the area, including churches and abandoned windmills.

Discover Volimes

16. Take a full-day tour of Kefalonia island

When you’re done seeing most of the beauties of Zakynthos, we recommend booking a day trip to Kefalonia in order to explore another nearby Ionian island. The tour is fully guided and will take you by boat and bus to all the major attractions of the island. You will have the opportunity to see the most important landmarks in Kefalonia’s picturesque capital Argostoli and explore the island’s impressive Drogarati Cave, as well as the mythical in-cave lake of nymph Melissani. You will also visit the imposing monastery of Saint Gerassimos.
