Koraput district was ruled by several dynasties such as Satavahanas, Ikshvakus, Nalas, Ganga kings and kings of Surya vans. In ancient times when the Nalas ruled this tract with Pushkari near modern Umarkote was their capital city. In the medieval period, Nandapur developed as the capital under the Silavamsi kings and after them under the kings of the solar dynasty. Viravikrama Deo of the solar dynasty shifted his capital to Jeypore about the middle of the 17 th century and developed into a prospered town.

There is a humongous Shiva Linga hidden within the cave, which legends say was discovered by Maharaja Veer Vikram Dev during his rule in the 17th century. 

The cave can be reached by a series of 200 steps which will take tourists to the shrine. The entrance is only 3 feet high and 2 feet wide, so it is not for the faint-hearted. You can take the challenging climb to the shrine and reach it to view the Shiva Linga.

The botanical garden with lush green deodar trees, fir trees, and many more flowering plants will amaze you!

There are 2 parts of the Kolab dam; one is Upper Kolab and the other is the lower Kolab. If you want to enjoy a boat ride with the awesome scenic places around it then you must visit the Upper Kolab area in the evening for a pleasant boat ride.

Duduma waterfall is situated at the Andhra-Odisha border and serves as another hydroelectric project for the district. The source river is Machhkund which literally means “a tub of fish”. This place is also known as “Machhya Tirtha”. It is located 92 km from Koraput.
