Resetting trip mileage

  • Thread starter pds9
  • Start date Apr 23, 2010

I've just got a Golf and have a rather basic (and probably stupid) question... ...how do you reset the trip mileage? I've tried using the 0.0/SET button on the right hand side of the dash (as the manual seems to suggest) but nothing happens. Do you have to be on a certain screen on the MFD, ignition on/off, etc?? Interestingly, the other button on the left hand side of the dash (that is meant to be used to set the time) doesn't seem to work either. It's almost like these two buttons have been disabled. Any help most appreciated...

If you use the steering wheel controls: Hit OK to switch between trip 1 (which will reset by itself when the car sits off for a while) and trip 2. With the desired trip, just hold down the OK button and it will reset.

Still not resetting Thanks for the suggestion. I can move the MFD display between the 1 and 2 memory as you say, and I can reset the range, travel time, etc that appear in the centre of the MFD display by holding the OK button down on the steering wheel. However, this doesn't seem to affect the trip mileage which is diplayed at the very bottom right of the MFD and also seems unaffected by whether you're using memory 1 or 2.

Your post doesn't make it clear, but on my GTI, and you have to press and hold the 0.0/SET button for maybe a second or so.

Yes, I've tried holding the 0.0/SET button in for several seconds but with no result. I'm beginning to think that maybe both dash buttons are faulty - seems a little unlikely but..?

Update I took the car to the local VW dealer who has confirmed it is a faulty contact on that particular switch (0.0/SET). Many thanks for the previous suggestions/help offered on this thread.

AFAIK the long term resets after 100 hours, there might be another threshold in max mileage

It's under warranty and going into the garage on Monday so we'll see if there are any faults. Thanks for the reply

Good luck, please keep us posted for the sake of helping someone else in the future Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Will do. I read on another forum this was a relatively common problem on earlier models. It may well have been a the battery as with the stop start, and the short journeys I make most days, it could have been drained. However I'd have assumed there would be a fail safe some where to switch off the stop/start if the charge dropped below a certain level

  • Sep 19, 2016

Took this to the dealer today and they think it needs a software update to fix. Weirdly they need to order an SD card with the update on. How archaic. You'd have thought any SD would work and they'd download it from an FTP location or server. Anyway, I'll feedback further when I've had the update.

Well that is weird. Unless the update is directly related to the start/stop not recognizing when the battery is not strong enough to work correctly Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reset trip odometer?

  • Add to quote

Hi Wondered if anyone can help. I just got a 16 plate Passat BlueMotion 2.0 TDI. I’m trying to figure out how to reset the trip odometer which is currently at 1200miles. I’ve looked everywhere and tried everyone. Pressing and holding the ok button on the steering wheel has reset everything to 0 on the “short term” and “long term” trip regarding fuel consumption and average speed etc but the “trip” is still showing as 1200miles. I’ve even re set everything back to factory settings. I’ve used the reset long term and short term button on the touch screen too but still can’t 0 it There is not 00/reset button on this version. Anyone have any idea? I’ve looked everywhere and gone through the manual Thanks

vw golf trip reset button

First posts normally go in introductions else you could get a free fix and we never see you again!!! Your car spec say 0, only what I've added from this post. On my Golf you press the 00 button on the dash to reset the mileage trip. If there is nothing in the MFD look in the sat/nav settings?

Oh sorry. I didn’t realise. My mistake. Yeah ive been all through the nav settings and couldn’t find anything on the trip odometer even in the car settings menu. Seen loads relating to the 00/set button but this doesn’t have one. It’s a vex hire so I can nip it back to VW if it persists but just wondered if anyone knew if it was a common fault or just something I was missing. Many thanks for your reply anyway.

GTE Active Info Display - Trip Meter - SOLVED

vw golf trip reset button

  • Add to quote

I first joined the Forum as a guest I was looking round to find out where the trip was on the Active Info Display in the GTE, as there seemed to be a button to reset it but no actual figure. Following filling up the car with old fashioned petrol yesterday I discovered if you hold down the trip reset for 5 seconds or so, the options in the display cycle between 'Time', 'Service', and 'Switch E-Range and Trip'. If you let go when it reaches this and click the trip reset again you get a lovely little trip computer in the AID. It does mean that the E-Range has gone but as its got little no accuracy anyway, why not use the Battery Gauge. Hope that helps

Glad youve told me how to do that - having the cancel button but no actual trip meter was driving me nuts! Unfortunately my 6 week old VW GTE is off the road with an unsolved ‘high voltage’ problem. Have you had any problems? Im starting to worry that I got a Friday afternoon car!

Fixing Trip Reset Button

  • Add to quote

Right finally got some spare time to sort this after 10 months of owning the 4mo. I know how to fix the button so won't take me long and I know how to get the clocks out but......... Do I need to mess about with Vag.com if I'm just taking out, taking apart and putting back in the same set of clocks? Cheers RACK

vw golf trip reset button

The trip reset button is on the end of the wiper stalk isn't it ? /edit on the bottom of the stalk (at the end)

I meant on the oddometer mate. The readout just below the mileage

Ah - sorry, just double checking! In that case I'm pretty sure you won't need to use any programming tools on the clocks.

Nice one, cheers for the quick reply

Lol, you know what, checked mine on Friday - my LCD trip won't reset either. Any chance you can tell me what breaks? and how to fix once you have the clocks out ?

There's a little tag on the end of the reset button that snaps off and causes it not to reach the micro switch to reset the trip. You just need a set of knackered clocks, take the button off those and swap them over, or fix your button by gluing something on the end of it to extend the broken tab. I went to do it saturday but my clocks are stuck tight so will have to live with it for a while longer now

Mine has decided to break now, is this hard to do or pretty straight forward? [:O]

My mileage reset button has broken as well I know how to fix it but where do you buy the actual mileage reset button and how much do they cost I can't find any on eBay

Happened to me several times. I continue to drive normally to my destination (naturally worried that without the stop/start operating I'm killing a few more polar bears).

After leaving it for a little while I then start off again and find it's cleared. I just assumed it was the ECU's 'time of the month'.

Ought to work for R GmbH

Mine does this, I think its due to the short journeys and the battery charge is lower after a long journey it seems not to do it any more. Must look into the charge level using the trip button to confirm. VCDS I think shows nothing.

tescor

using the trip button to confirm

How do you do this please?

I need to do the same thing. I do mostly short journeys, and my stop start hardly every works. If it does, it tends to be at the end of a longer journey.

Switch the ignition off, then press (and continue to hold) the trip reset button in the middle lower of the instrument panel. It will cycle from first resetting the trip to 0 miles > show "Time" to allow you to change the clock > then keep holding until say "Battery". Release the button and display SOC for a few seconds before returning back to the main screen.

It would seem though that this works on some cars others need it enabling via VCDS.

Just tried it on mine, it didnt need VCDS coding. Did clear the trip though. 60% doh.

Your Start/stop only works when there is over 80% battery charge am pretty sure. take it to a dealer they will just leave it on charge over night or if you take it in early morning you most likely recieve it at the end of the day

edit - its common on all VW with start/stop

Lawrie

It should be the driving mode button to put it back in 'true race' mode

How to reset "service now" warning?

Can anyone out there tell me how to reset that anoying "service now" alarm that the dealer sets to come on every 10000 k's? I would much prefer to do my own oil changes and not be ripped off at a dealers workshop for the pivilege.

1. Keys out of ignition- press and hold in trip odometer reset button "0.0" on right hand side of display 2. Still holding this button down, insert key into ignition and put to the on position without starting the car. 3. Display will read "service now" 4. let go of the "0.0" button and depress the "m" button on the left hand side of the display. this will re-set the service reminder. There is no confirmation on the display other than the words "service now" will disappear. You can confirm that the service reminder has been reset, or check how many kms/days remain until service at any time by taking key out of the ignition and holding in the trip reset "0.0" button for between 3 and 5 seconds. The MFD will display miles and hours until next service.

Anybody know how to reset the "Inspect" light....

  • Add to quote

Not the oil service light. This is for inspection. I can't seem to find it and mine requires an inspection now that I hit 15k miles.

http://youtu.be/kelIbqkYhUQ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thanks but this is not the service but "Inspect" light that comes on when you get close to 15k miles.

It's the same procedure as resetting the oil change reminder but you have the hazard lights on when you do it.

Not true for MK7. It's the same procedure as resetting the oil light but you let off the trip reset early. So just to be clearly...hold the trip reset button, press the engine start button (without pushing any pedals, no need to start the car), as soon as the car turns on and you see the MFD asking you a question, let go of the trip reset button. Then it should ask you if you want to reset the inspection time. hit the trip reset button to confirm.

This did not work for me. I have successfully reset the oil interval, and the maintenance interval but I still get an acoustic ding every time I start the car and the dash flashes a "Inspect Now" banner. Any other ideas that don't include going to a dealership?

Ross-tech cable?

Finishthepint procedure works fine on 16R and so do the various videos available.
