Kurseong: Ultimate Guide To Plan Your Trip

Kurseong: The Land of White Orchids. The name behind this quaint little town situated close to Darjeeling has an obvious reason. The hill-slopes of Kurseong are home to innumerable white orchids that make the landscape look bright and beautiful. A hill station, located around 30 Km from Darjeeling, Kurseong is locally known as “Kharsang”. Kharsang, in Lepcha language, means ‘Land of White Orchids’.

Located at 1458 feet above sea level and has a pleasant climate all year round. The weather is more moderate than Darjeeling and tourism is a major source of livelihood of this hill station.

Panoramic View of Kurseong City

This place is around 47 Km away from Siliguri and Bagdogra. It is connected to the heart of the city via road and via the Darjeeling Toy Train. You can reach this beautiful town from all other parts of India and across the globe via Bagdogra Airport which is a maximum of 1 hour and 20 minutes away.

Since the year 1880, this has been a place for rejuvenation of the mind, soul and body. The British Viceroys would escape to this hill station to recover from illnesses. It continues to be an escape destination from the nation’s heatwaves.

Kurseong Weather, Temperature and Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from the 1 st week of March to the 1 st week of May and again from the 1 st week of October to the last week of November.

Temperature

Temperatures here tend to vary a little. Although it does get humid during certain parts of the year, temperatures feel pleasant all through. There are only a couple of weeks in the winter months when it could feel really cold. The fair amount of humidity leads to precipitation for almost 6 months in a year.

Kurseong-in-Summer

This hamlet town has one of the most temperate weather conditions across tourist destinations in the world. The three hottest months of the year are June, July and August.

A typical day in the month of July will feel like 27.1 degrees C and night will witness a temperature of not less than 18.5 degrees C.

The Factor Of Feels-like Temperature

The temperature of a particular area is not the only deciding factor behind experiencing the weather. If higher temperatures are accompanied by higher levels of humidity, then the discomfort invariably increases. Similarly, if colder temperatures come along with cold winds, the ‘feels-like’ temperature goes down a few points on the thermometer.

Thus humidity and the chill of the winds play important roles in deciding the weather conditions here.

When does it rain and snow in here?

Significant amounts of rainfall occur in the month of August. There is also the possibility of snowfall this month. The months that have the lowest chance of rainfall are from November to February. These are more or less dry spells and tourists love this kind of weather for uninterrupted wandering around.

How humid does it get?

This place is humid and there is no denying that. Highest humidity occurs in the month of August. January is the month with the lowest levels of humidity.

Gently Breezy

Kurseong never really experiences strong and gusty winds. The winds are calm and although January is the windiest month, the average speed never goes beyond 1.3 knots.

Smokey-Kurseong-in-Winters

December is also fairly windy but the average wind speed is contained within 9.8 knots. The consequence is a gentle and breezy air around the city.

Travel Plan by Seasons

Spring season lasts from March to May. The highest recorded temperature is never more than 26.8 degrees C and the lowest temperature never goes beyond 17.8 degrees C. May will feel warmer and you can expect some amount of precipitation for close to 10 days in a month, on average.

The months in the middle of the year are highly comfortable and make tourism very convenient. It lasts from June to August. The humidity is slightly higher than other months but frequent precipitations occur so the average daily temperature never really goes up.

Summer is an important month for tourism and accommodations gets prebooked in this period. So, if you are planning to travel in the summers you got to pre-book your stays.

Morning at Kurseong

Autumn lasts from the months of September to November. The highest recorded temperature in these months is around 25.9 degrees during the day and around 18.4 degrees at night. These temperatures feel especially comfortable because of the wind that comes along.

It might rain or snow a bit in autumn. However, autumn is still the second most sought after the season as far as tourism is concerned, after the summer months.

Lasting from the months of December to January, winter months are quite cold in Kurseong and a minimum temperature falls to 10 degrees C. It could also rain or snow a little in this season. Not too many tourists come visiting in the winter months. But as you know, cold places take a different look altogether in winters and this place is too not an exception.

Hotels in Kurseong

This place is primarily popular for boarding schools and tea estates. However, it is a small town and accommodation might not be as fancy as Darjeeling and Gangtok. Despite being a small town, the town area does have its share of good hotels and homestays.

tourist spot of kurseong

Although people generally visit here to take a look at boarding schools or for admission procedures, there are many tourists as well who look for places to stay. Tourists are generally fond of places situated at a distance from the centre of the city. This is perhaps why they prefer putting up closer to the tea estates and farther away from the throbbing city life.

What kinds of hotels are available in here?

The place has all kinds of hotels. They range from budget hotels to the ones in mid-range as well as the ones that belong to the luxurious category. You can choose as per your budget and your convenience.

Since it is a small town but does welcome a large influx of guests in peak seasons, pre-booking hotels is a wise idea.

"The Land of White Orchids"

Kurseong tourism.

Also known as the 'Land of White Orchids', Kurseong is a hill station located close to Darjeeling famous for its waterfalls, temples and Buddhist gompas apart from the excellent view that the place provides.

Perched on the Siliguri-Darjeeling highway, Kurseong is a quiet hill station. Kurseong enjoys milder and pleasant weather most times of the year. During the monsoon season the rain-gods are more than generous as the town receives non-stop rains for days. The rains are in fact much needed for the flora and fauna of the area. Kurseong, the 'Land of White Orchids', gets its name from the flowers found in abundance on its hill-slopes. It's difficult not to fall in love with the view of tea plantations, lush green forests in the panoramic setting of snow-clad mountains. At sunset, you can see an amalgamation of the most beautiful colors in the sky. You can see the British remnants in the form of churches and school in the town. This small hill-town makes for a great stopover for tourists looking for a more peaceful alternative to Darjeeling.

Perched in the beautiful hills of Darjeeling district, Kurseong is a charming hill station in West Bengal, India. Known as the ‘Land of the White Orchid’, Kurseong is celebrated for its scenic beauty, pleasant weather, and rich tea estates. Among its many attractions, the historical site known as “Chimney” holds a special place in the hearts of locals and tourists alike.

Unraveling History: The Tale of Chimney

The Chimney is a remnant of Kurseong’s colonial past. The structure is essentially a brick fireplace, believed to have been part of the home of a British resident during the colonial era. The chimney stands as a testament to the architectural styles of the period, offering a glimpse into the town’s historical and cultural evolution.

While the origin of its name remains debatable, locals often cite the tale of a British family that lived in a house at this site. The house, long gone, is said to have had a distinctive chimney, which is all that remains today.

The Chimney Park: A Breath of Fresh Air

Surrounding the Chimney is a beautifully maintained public park, offering sweeping views of the Kurseong town and the surrounding tea gardens. Filled with vibrant flowers, and lush greenery, and equipped with seating arrangements, the park provides a perfect spot for picnics or a tranquil afternoon spent immersed in a book.

Panoramic Views: Capturing the Beauty of Kurseong

The location of the Chimney, atop one of Kurseong’s rolling hills, offers spectacular panoramic views. From here, visitors can admire the beauty of the sprawling tea gardens, and the lush forests, and on clear days, even catch a glimpse of the majestic Kanchenjunga range.

A Trekker’s Delight: Exploring the Trails

For adventure enthusiasts, the trails leading up to the Chimney present a delightful trekking experience. The trails meander through tea estates and pine forests, offering captivating views along the way. The trek, while relatively easy, brings you closer to the natural beauty of Kurseong.

The Chimney in Kurseong, while seemingly simple, is a site rich in history and surrounded by natural beauty. It provides a serene escape from bustling city life, where one can revel in tranquility, enjoy scenic views, and reflect on the past. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or a casual traveler seeking unique experiences, the Chimney of Kurseong is a must-visit on your next trip to this charming hill station.

Why Kurseong, The Land Of White Orchids, Near Darjeeling, West Bengal Is A Must Visit

The sleepy little town of Kurseong, around 30 kilometres away from Darjeeling, is perfect for a slow holiday. Take it from the locals, who’ll direct you to authentic eateries, experiences, and views that are sure to melt your heart. By Kastoori Rai Dewan

After 60 minutes of an uphill ride from Siliguri via the Hill Cart Road highway, a small town called Kurseong comes into view. Kurseong or Kharsang , as the locals call it, is a predominantly Nepali-speaking town. Kharsang loosely translates to ‘the land of the white orchids’—in fact, the town is known to be the home of the flowering species. It sits on misty green hills dotted with tea gardens. The Siliguri plains fed by rivers glisten in the background on one side and Mt. Kanchenjunga peeks from behind another.

As a child I visited Kurseong every year to see my maternal family. Arriving from a big city, I felt a rush of adventure as the town’s pine trees and open spaces came into view. It’s been years since I last visited, so I catch up with Abhishek Lemo Gurung, born and bred in Kurseong, to fill me in. The frontman for two national rock bands called Gingerfeet and Stillwaters, he admits that Kurseong doesn’t yield its best easily. But drive a few kilometres outside of town to the hilltops of Deorali, Chimney and Third Mile and Kurseong’s serene beauty comes forth.

Where birds sing…

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Sumiran Pradhan (@sumiranpradhan)

In these pine-scented forests, bird songs and gurgling streams replace the sound of daily din. Locals often hike to daaras (edge of a hill) to savour uninterrupted views of the dramatic landscape. Gurung’s hideout is an unmarked spot in Deorali, where he goes to write songs while watching the flaming sunsets. Sunrises, on the other hand, bathe the curves and slopes of Kurseong in a mesmerising golden light. The many home-stays around here offer travellers front row seats to such spectacular scenes. For those who prefer to stay close to town, the chance to see panoramic views is still not lost. Gurung opines that if there is one must-visit view point, it is the famous Eagles Craig perched at the head of the town. Others like Heaven, Terrai View Point and I Love Kurseong viewpoint are quite close to town as well. For short hikes , Victoria Hill is perfect.

The flavour of Kurseong…

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Encamp Adventures (@encampadventures)

Kurseong wakes up early to the aroma of the finest Darjeeling tea. By 8 am, porches are abuzz with neighbours sharing cups of chiya (tea) over morning chatter. Soon, Kurseong gravitates towards its centre, called the bazaar, which is packed cheek by jowl with shops, cars and people. As a child, I often ate lip-smacking momos and thukpa at hole-in-the-wall restaurants at the bazaar. While these are still around, Gurung updates me that hip cafes like 33 Dreams Cafe, Hungry Lion, and Kurseong Diaries have brought international cuisines to town. His favourite, however, are the famous meatballs from Paradise restaurant that sells out at a lightening pace. Local delicacies like sel roti (ring shaped bread made with rice paste), aloo dum ( spicy potato curry), kinema (fermented soybeans) and gundruk (fermented reddish leaves) are served in many eateries, alongside home-made brews called chhang (fermented millet, rice or barley) and tongba (fermented whole grain millet).

By 9 pm, Kurseong signs off for the day. The only times bed times are ignored is during festivals and special occasions. Then people sing and dance the night away! Music runs in the views of the people—one is never far away from someone singing and strumming the guitar.

We both agree that a trip to Kurseong would be incomplete without a tour of one of its internationally-recognised tea gardens like Ambootia, Makaibari, or Castleton. Another must-do is taking the toy train, located at the centre of town, to Darjeeling—which is 32 kilometres away. This joy ride takes about three hours to the destination as opposed to one hour by car.

Abhishek Lemo Gurung

Finally, I ask him what makes Kurseong different from Darjeeling. He gives it a thought and notes that Kurseong is the quaint sibling of a bustling Darjeeling , and the perfect retreat for those searching for a spot of peace and quiet. I wholeheartedly agree!

Kurseong to Darjeeling Travel Guide from Kolkata

If you want to find the cheapest holiday destination in  West Bengal , the first destination that comes to my mind is the Kurseong Darjeeling tour. I have saved money for three months from my earnings and spent that money on our next tour.

Kurseong to Darjeeling

About Kurseong

The king of Sikkim accepted the subjugation of the British by giving them Kharsang as a gift in 1835. The Nepalese language is Kharsang; the meaning of this word is morning polar star, then transformed into Kurseong in the British tongue.

According to another version, Kurseong means Karsan Rup or the place of white orchid. Kurseong is located 32 km before Darjeeling on the Siliguri- Darjeeling route at the height of 1458 m (4860 ft), shaded with pine, far, and birch trees. The distance from Siliguri is 48 km. Via Pankhabari Rd, the distance from Mirik is 46 & via Ghoom, its 76 km.

There is a junction in Kurseong where the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway toy train and other vehicles are halted. Away from the crowd and bustle of the town, this place is a calm and pleasant health resort tourist spot associated with the memories of Sister Nivedita, Rabindranath Tagore, Abanindranath Tagore, and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose & Atulprasad Sen. Due to its position & tranquil climatic condition; the city is now expanding.

Many of the best schools in India are in Kurseong . Most of the tea estates galore are on slopes on all sides, and there is also a wide variety of beautiful & gorgeous colourful flowers in almost every house. Kurseong is also renowned as the city of orchids .

Kurseong sightseeing

The third highest peak in the world, the Kanchenjunga, has been seen from the Kurseong. If one can climb up 1 km from the railway station, the Eagle’s Crag can be seen beside the Kanchenjunga; the snow-clad peaks of other mountains are also clearly visible. The pleasant scenario of sunset in Eagle’s Crag is mesmerizing us. The  Shahid Smarak  is also excellent. The water reservoir is here.

Tourist also looks at the Constantia and the Castleton Tea Estate in this area. If you climb the mountains and go 12 km to the N-East from Downhill, you can truly explore the beauty of nature. There is a Forest museum (except Sat and Sun 10-30 to 17-00) and a Forest School in Downhill .

Our Kurseong Tour

Darjeeling is called the Switzerland of West Bengal. It’s the most famous honeymoon destination for Bengali travellers. You can also book a tour from  the Kanchenjunga tourism  official website to explore Darjeeling’s beauty.

After becoming a mother, this is my first travel destination. I was stuck at home for a long time, so I eagerly waited to come out and explore something that is my passion, and at that time, my baby was only 11 months old. I am very happy, and after one and a half years, this tour is very refreshing for me.

It’s a 3-day, 4-night journey for the Kurseong Darjeeling tour. Please note whenever you purchase a ticket from IRCTC, please fill up the nomination form and the rail insurance properly; it will help in case of emergency. Nowadays, the trip insurance cost is nil.

Cochrane place hotel Kurseong

The trip was also memorable for my baby, who enjoyed the tour very much. We boarded from Sealdah and reached New Jalpaiguri by Darjeeling mail. We hired a car from there and reached the Cochrane Palace Hotel at Kurseong.

The  airport near Darjeeling  is Bagdogra Airport. Many online flight booking sites are available where one can buy cheap flight tickets to travel to Bagdogra. It’s one of the best places to travel and explore the exquisite beauty of the mountains.

We reached Mohini Road; along with this road, the scenery is beautiful. We found hills near us and saw an army camp wherever we looked . After reaching the hotel, we got fresh and finished our lunch. On the hotel rooftop, the scenic beauty was not forgettable, and they have some toys and a small playground for kids—the hotel was 15 to 20 minutes walking distance from the Kurseong railway station. So the area is less crowded, and the hotel’s surrounding view is very nice. After all, one can find that kind of environment to feel relaxed.

Kurseong tour guide

First, we went to the Makaibari tea estate near the hotel by car. Best quality Darjeeling tea can be found here. Anybody can see the processing of tea and also buy some tea. In the evening, we returned to the hotel and enjoyed the sunset with tea.

After 1st day staying at a hotel, we woke up at 6:30 am, packed our breakfast, and went to Kurseong station. Our Toy train timing was 7 am, and then our journey started towards Darjeeling. The Darjeeling toy train is famous all over the world. You can Book a Toy train ticket earlier from IRCTC.

The Darjeeling toy train schedules are available on that website. The toy train from Kurseong to Darjeeling was exciting for us, and that journey invited the entire travel lover back to their favourite hill station. It is a fascinating place to visit, and it is not demanding a high budget, especially for those living in West Bengal. The Darjeeling Toy train trip is very classic and memorable for me.

At the Ghum station, the toy train stopped for a few minutes. This Ghum is one of the famous Darjeeling railway stations. We drank some tea and breakfast over there and again started our Toy train journey.

The taste of Darjeeling tea is lovely. The station Batasia loop is very pleasing, and it is the viewpoint of Darjeeling. The Kanchanjangha is seen adequately from that place through binoculars. After reaching Darjeeling, we hire a car for a side seen.

Visit Darjeeling India, the queen of hills

Darjeeling seems to be the queen of the hills, for her beauty, among India’s hill stations like  Shimla Manali , Mussoorie, Shillong, etc. It is famous for Darjeeling orange and Darjeeling tea. The distance between Kolkata and Darjeeling is 633 km, and from Siliguri, the distance is 80 km. Darjeeling is situated at 2185 m or 7100 ft, as the crowning glory of West Bengal is like the Kohinoor diamond.

Holidays to Darjeeling India

After visiting the  most famous places in Kolkata , this can be your second destination in West Bengal. It’s a beautiful place, and you get a lot of tea variations like earl grey tee, Darjeeling tee, Rooibusch tee, tee Trinken, Schwarztee, finest Darjeeling tea, grüntee, Aromatisierter tee, Assam tee, etc.

What to see in Darjeeling India

The natural scenery of Darjeeling is beautiful. We visited the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Tenzing Rock, the tea estate, and Darjeeling Mall .

These are other  tourist places  which are equally famous. You have to divide your program into two ways. There are lots of tea shops in the mall at a reasonable price. Darjeeling Tea can also be bought from the mall. The Darjeeling Zoo time is 8:30 am to 5 pm. We buy Darjeeling tea from there.

After we had reached the Darjeeling mall, the rain was happening in Darjeeling, but that was not heavy rain. It continued for about 2 hours. We took shelter in a tailor shop. So we dismissed the shopping plan. We needed to return to Kurseong, but there was no toy train ticket.

So we decided to hire a car to go back to Kurseong. I have some dry pickles I bought on the way. On the way to return, a huge traffic jam occurred due to rain and landslide issues. At about 8 pm, we returned to our hotel. Take some dinner and then go to bed.

Sevoke coronation bridge

The next day, flowers were blooming, and it was sunny; it was our homecoming day and our train at 8:30 pm. I used a small camera, a Canon, which also fit in my pocket.

So we decided to roam more in the city. We had planned to go to Sevoke Coronation Bridge and Bengal Safari Park at Siliguri. While returning from Pankhabari Road, we enjoyed seeing the beautiful view of the tea gardens. After we had reached New Jalpaiguri, we hired another car for Sevoke. It is a good place for vacation.

Visit  Digha Udaypur sea beach in West Bengal

The car charged 1500 Rs. It takes one and a half hours to visit the Sevoke Bridge. In the same way, we visited Bengal Safari Park . After reaching Sevoke, we visited the Sevoke Kali temple on the hilltop. Lots of monkeys can be found on the Coronation Bridge. The bridge is on the Tista River and connects Dooars and New Jalpaiguri. There is a picnic spot beside the Tista River. This spot was mesmerizing us.

Bengal safari

After visiting the bridge, we came back and visited Bengal Safari Park. But when we reached the park, the car service was closed for the day. We walk for around 1 hour and return to the Hong Kong market at Siliguri. The time was going on, so we had a short period, and with that time, we completed our shopping and returned to New Jalpaiguri station to journey to Kolkata. Our Kurseong Darjeeling trip finished here.

Two major duluth tourist attractions need millions in repairs.

DULUTH — Rust and corrosion plague the Aerial Lift Bridge, and the 2,300 auditorium seats in the Duluth convention center's auditorium — the biggest performing arts space in the city — are from 1966.

The bridge and the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC) are two of the city's most visible and popular tourism draws, and they need millions in repairs and updates. Projects to address them are among nine that city officials have prioritized as they lobby for state bonding money this year.

Duluth leaders have sought upgrades to the 500-foot-long historic Lift Bridge for years. It needs about $20 million in repairs, and the city is lobbying for $8.2 million to add to city funds and state and federal money.

Mayor Roger Reinert told a crowd gathered for Duluth and St. Louis County Days at the Capitol last month that the bridge is "iconic" for the entire state of Minnesota, along with being the only way to access "an entire neighborhood of Duluth."

That and the other projects prioritized by the city are core not only to Duluth but to the whole region, he said.

Average daily traffic crossing the bridge reaches more than 6,000 vehicles, and roughly 900 boats carrying 35 million short tons of freight pass underneath annually, city officials have said.

The bridge needs significant structural repairs to its lift span and overhead truss, and needs reconstruction of the cantilevered sidewalk, among other updates.

The DECC, home to Amsoil Arena and UMD Bulldog hockey, faces decades of deferred maintenance throughout its various venues. It was granted a $1 million line of credit from the city last fall to deal with low reserves, which it has not dipped into yet, Executive Director Dan Hartman said. Leaders laid off a handful of full-time employees and reduced hours for part-time workers last fall.

Because it's a state convention center that serves an entire region instead of being a city entity like convention centers in Rochester or Mankato, city officials don't always advocate for it, Hartman said, and problems have piled up.

The DECC is asking for $6.2 million to pay for projects including the Symphony Hall seating and re-worked auditorium space for people with disabilities. It also needs a new escalator and replacement of faulty pipe fittings, which force the DECC to run 190-degree water through the building's lines continuously. The repairs would reduce the complex's heating costs by 40%.

"We're just trying to get the [complex] back to normal, because it just hasn't had the support that a facility like this would have," Hartman said of the nine venues that fall under the DECC's realm.

The tourism hub drives traffic to town that boosts the city's economy, with visitors and convention-goers eating in restaurants, staying in hotels and paying to see attractions, Hartman said. If it falls further into disrepair, he said, it could also hurt other businesses.

Duluth is also lobbying for these projects:

• $6.7 million for upgrades and improvements at the water treatment plant, which has a pumphouse more than 100 years old

• Nearly $11 million for Lot D rehabilitation , to support preparation of the polluted waterfront site for economic development

• $7 million to support redevelopment of the Duluth Armory

• $25 million to aid construction of a Minnesota Air National Guard 148th Fighter Wing aircraft shelter

• $15 million for a new community center and sports arena in West Duluth

• Funding to redo a plan formed by former Mayor Emily Larson's administration for replacement of the downtown Duluth Public Library

• $14 million to help replace the Duluth International Airport's control tower
