A Complete Guide to Visiting The Omni Grove Park Inn

The historic Omni Grove Park Inn is one of the best hotels in Asheville and one of the most unique hotels in the Southeast. It was founded by Edwin W. Grove, who is now known as “The Father of Modern Asheville.” Grove was a self-made millionaire born and raised on a farm in Tennessee who had made his fortune as the inventor of the quinine Tasteless Chill Tonic to control the growth of the malaria parasite. 

(Fun fact: The bottle had a hilarious drawing of a creature with the body of a pig and the face of a healthy, plump child because the tonic made “children and adults as fat as pigs.”) 

Grove started coming to Asheville during the summers to improve his respiratory health and fell in love with the area. And the rest is history!

The History of The Omni Grove Park Inn

The most iconic among Asheville’s hotels, The Omni Grove Park Inn was built in just one year and inspired by the rustic hotels of Yellowstone National Park, especially the Old Faithful Inn. Instead of logs, they used native boulders from the surrounding mountains.

Construction started in the spring of 1912. The legend says that 400 men worked 10 hours a day, six days a week, earning the best wages in the area ($1 a day). By July 1913, the opening banquet took place with many notable guests led by the Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan, who gave the keynote address, describing the Inn as “built for the ages.”

Located 10 minutes from downtown Asheville, halfway up the slope of Sunset Mountain, and nearly 2,500 feet above sea level, the site gives guests a panoramic view of Asheville and the western rim of the Blue Ridge Mountains. 

Many things have happened since the foundation of the Grove Park Inn in 1913, including the addition of two more wings and a golf course, the renovation of the main building, and the construction of the underground spa, one of the best in the country. 

“The idea was to build a big home where every modern convenience could be had, but with all the old-fashioned qualities of genuineness… Any attempt at the bizarre, the tawdry, and flashy foolish would be omitted,” said Grove. Fortunately, the following owners have respected the original inspiration, and the hotel continues to blend luxury and Southern hospitality with comfort, elegance, and a home-like feel.  

The hotel’s history is fascinating. Think about famous politicians and celebrities who would stay for weeks or months, a suicide attempt by famous jazz-era writer F. Scott Fitzgerald, a president-in-exile, and a place where Axis diplomats were arrested during World War II. The list of famous visitors includes 10 US presidents!

“Ï did what I could to build a hotel worthy of these wonderful mountains,” Grove said in 1913. We couldn’t agree more! Here I’ve compiled a list of things you can do as a day or overnight guest of The Omni Grove Park Inn, from visiting for the day to lodging options, spa and wellness experiences, shopping, dining, and recreation. 

Staying at the Omni Grove Park Inn (and Getting the Best Views!)

The Omni Grove Park Inn has three buildings: The Main Inn (142 rooms), the Vanderbilt Wing (167 rooms), and the Sammons Wing (204 rooms). The Main Inn’s rooms are historical and furnished with Roycroft Arts & Crafts décor. The other buildings were added between the late ‘70s and early ‘80s and offer a more modern vibe and bigger spaces. 

All three buildings give guests spectacular views, although the Club Floor Premium and Panorama Corner rooms offer some of the best. In addition, there are pet-friendly rooms at the Vanderbilt Wing and accessible rooms at the Sammons Wing.  

The Main Inn offers Traditional Rooms , Resort Rooms overlooking the landscape, and Mountain View Rooms offering views of Asheville’s skyline, the golf course, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. 

The Vanderbilt and Sammons wings offer Premium Resort Rooms overlooking the spa gardens or the resort’s landscaping and Premium Mountain View Rooms with fantastic views. 

Both wings offer exclusive adult-only (21+) Club Floor Rooms with personal concierge service, complimentary continental breakfast, a spa-like bathroom with a single effervescent bath, and a walk-in hydro shower. Plus, you’ll get other exclusive services and views of the spa gardens, the wooded areas, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. 

However, the Club Floor Premium Rooms offer some of the best views in the resort. In addition, the luxurious E.W. Grove Penthouse Suite (the largest room in the inn) is also part of the Club Floor.

The Sammons Wing has oversized 400-450-square-foot Panorama Corner Rooms with amazing panoramic views, while the Vanderbilt Wing offers fully-equipped 1,000-square-foot Executive Junior Suites .

The Omni Grove Park Inn Restaurants, Bars, Lounges, and Cafes

Whatever your food or drink craving or mood, there is a place for you at the inn, and views are always guaranteed! The good news is that you don’t have to be a resort guest to dine here. 

Parking is free for the first three hours, but then there is a fee that changes seasonally, so please call if you have questions. They also offer valet parking for a fee. If you are planning on dining at The Omni Grove Park Inn, reservations are highly recommended for all restaurants.

1. Blue Ridge Restaurant

Located in the Vanderbilt Wing, the Blue Ridge Restaurant offers an extensive farm-to-table buffet and spectacular views. It’s open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch. It features the award-winning Friday night seafood buffet and a Saturday night prime rib buffet. Plus, kids five and under eat free with paying adults. 

2. Sunset Terrace and Sunset Cocktail Terrace

The Sunset Te r race is off the Great Hall, serving hand-cut steaks, premiere chops, and fresh seafood. The Sunset Terrace is a 10-time recipient of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. Weather permitting, you can also enjoy a cocktail or a glass of wine at the Sunset Cocktail Terrace (no reservations required).

3. Edison, Craft Ales + Kitchen

Edison, Craft Ales + Kitchen is named after guests Thomas Edison and his “Vagabonds” (Edison, Harvey Firestone, and Henry Ford), and it strives to give guests “a true Asheville experience.” 

They partner with local farmers and producers like Bee Charmer, Sweet Grass Dairy, and Farm & Sparrow to offer regionally inspired farm-to-table cuisine and cocktails. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating, and the dining room showcases the work of local artists. 

4. Vue 1913

The art-deco brasserie-style Vue 1913 is in the Sammons Wing and gets its name from the year The Omni Grove Park Inn was founded. It offers dishes with the best seasonal local ingredients, an ample selection of wines, and a panoramic view of the mountains. 

Vue 1913 has repeatedly won Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence and is also one of only two AAA Four Diamond Restaurants in Western North Carolina. If you consider yourself a foodie, the restaurant offers a Wild Food Foraging Tour , during which you’ll learn to safely forage your own ingredients before having the chef cook the food you collected for you at Vue 1913. 

5. Great Hall Bar

Then there’s the rustic yet elegant and cozy Great Hall Bar in the lobby, which offers an extensive menu of classic and signature cocktails. You’ll love chilling by one of the two 36-foot-wide fireplaces (a unique feature of these is that the elevators are concealed within them!) and enjoying live music. The Great Hall, with its 24-foot ceilings and roaring fireplaces, is the heart of the Grove Park Inn and the best place to feel its history.

6. Presidents Lounge

Located just past the Heritage Ballroom in the Sammons Wing, the Presidents Lounge offers a fine collection of wines by the glass, specialty vodka and gin, handcrafted cocktails, and tapas. It overlooks downtown Asheville and the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. 

7. The Spa Café

The Spa Café offers juices and smoothies, champagne and cocktails, breakfast items, salads, sandwiches, and wraps in a relaxing atmosphere. We’ll get there later, but please remember that the spa services are only available for guests staying at the hotel.

8. Cabana Grill and Bar

The Cabana Grill and Bar is by the outdoor pool and the Golf Pro Shop, and it opens seasonally. It has an outdoor grill and a full bar. This is the place to go for sandwiches, salads, and snacks.

9. Elaine’s Dueling Piano Bar

Elaine’s Dueling Piano Bar is open from Thursday to Saturday and offers live music, dancing, comedy shows, and a menu of drinks. The doors open at 8:00 pm, there is no cover fee, and guests must be 21 or older. 

10. The Marketplace

Finally, The Marketplace, located in the Vanderbilt Wing at the corner of the retail promenade, has coffee, hot chocolate, house-made pastries, pizza, and frozen treats. 

11. In-Room Dining

The Restaurant in Room menu offers breakfast only from 6:30 am until 10 am. If you’re in the mood for something light, you can choose the Yogurt Parfait, the Chia Seed Pudding, or a freshly-made pastry. 

But if you’re fueling up for an action-packed day, hearty options range from Steak and Eggs to Stuffed French Toast. There’s also a children’s menu if you’re traveling with your little ones.

Go Underground at The Spa at The Omni Grove Park Inn

The Spa at The Omni Grove Park Inn is a spectacular 43,000-square-foot subterranean spa, voted one of the “Top Resort Spas in the US” by Condé Nast Traveler . What makes this spa so special? 

The excellent quality of the wellness treatments and the creativity of its architecture plays a big role. It’s hard to believe that 8 million pounds of stone were used to build its many caverns, rock walls, arches, and tunnels!

The spa is connected to all the buildings by descending steps, surrounded by waterfalls, pools, and natural gardens. There is a cafe and a specialty spa boutique inside the spa. 

To add to the luxury, both the men’s and women’s changing areas have luxurious fireplace lounges. Of course, and like every experience at The Omni Grove Park Inn, views are always part of the equation.

The Spa at The Omni Grove Park Inn offers 20 water features, including mineral-based pools, therapeutic waterfalls, and a lap pool blanketed with 6,500 fiber-optic stars and underwater music! You’ll love the contrast pools, inhalation rooms, saunas, eucalyptus-infused steam rooms, and multiple facial, body, massage, and pedicure treatments. 

Spa day passes and treatments are only available to overnight resort guests by reservation (day passes are limited). Therefore, it’s recommended that you book your day pass and spa experiences while making your hotel reservations. 

From Golf to Tennis: Stay Active During Your Stay at The Omni Grove Park Inn

1. sports complex.

The Omni Grove Park Inn guests have complimentary access to the 50,000-square-foot Sports Complex , which boasts an indoor pool, True and Precor treadmills, Peloton bikes, elliptical trainers, free weights, and more than 20 Paramount strength-building stations. It also offers instructor-led classes – from yoga, meditation, and body sculpting to cycling and Aqua Fit. 

2. Tennis Center

The Omni Grove Park Inn has been named one of the “Best 50 Tennis Resorts” by Tennis Magazine . The Tennis Center has six courts (three indoors and three outdoors), so you can swing your racket year-round. It also offers private classes and clinics. There is also a racquetball court!

3. Donald Ross-Designed Golf Course

The resort is famous for its 6,055-yard, 18-hole Donald Ross-designed golf course , visited by Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, and Jack Nicklaus. Even President Obama played golf here! 

No worries if you would like to play golf but don’t know how. They offer introductory classes. You just need to show up wearing golf-appropriate attire. If you didn’t bring an outfit, you can get it at the Golf Pro Shop!

4. Nantahala Outdoor Center

Finally, and because the Asheville area is all about celebrating the outdoors, the Nantahala Outdoor Center offers endless outdoor adventure. 

This is the nation’s largest outdoor recreation company, and it has an on-site office in the Sammons Wing, where you can book fun outdoor experiences for the entire family. From guided rafting trips and guided hikes in the Blue Ridge Mountains to zip lining and canopy tours, there’s something for everyone.

Check Out the National Gingerbread House Competition at The Omni Grove Park Inn

The now-famous Gingerbread House Competition at The Omni Grove Park Inn began in 1992 with just a few gingerbread houses. Today it is a competitive event and one of the best things to do in Asheville in the winter. The display starts at the end of November and ends during the first week of January. 

Western North Carolina families cherish this tradition very much. Besides choosing your favorite gingerbread house, you’ll love walking around the resort to admire the 80 illuminated Christmas trees while sipping hot chocolate.

Guests not staying at the resort can only visit the exhibition on certain days and times during this time of the year. Please call or check the hotel’s website before heading out. Parking is limited, and there is no three-hour complimentary parking for day visitors during the holiday season (October to December). 

You can call to find out the parking fee or take an Uber to avoid frustrations. The good news is that the Grove Park Inn donates a portion of the parking proceeds during the exhibition to local nonprofits!

Indulge In On-Site Shopping at The Omni Grove Park Inn’s Lovely Stores

While I don’t recommend staying at The Omni Grove Park Inn and never leaving to explore anything else, you can certainly do that if you want. This hotel is a micro-town and has every need covered, even buying unique Asheville souvenirs.  

1. Emporium 1913

Emporium 1913 in the Vanderbilt Wing hosts The Marketplace. In this little shop, you can find everything from lattes and homemade treats to locally sourced gifts and Grove Park Inn-related souvenirs (clothing, mugs, books, stuffed animals, ornaments – you name it!). There are also boutiques, accessories, jewelry, and lounge shops.

2. Sammons Wing Shopping Promenade

The Sammons Wing Shopping Promenade offers a collection of home accessories and unique gifts that change with the seasons. I love going here during the December holidays to see what’s new. There is also an outdoor gear shop and an art gallery featuring locally handcrafted items.

3. The Spa Boutique and Golf Pro Shop

The Spa Boutique sells items from the signature spa line, clothing, and beautiful gift baskets, and the Golf Pro Shop offers everything golf related. Of course, you can also buy GPI gift cards!

Visiting the Omni Grove Park Inn for the Day

It is possible to visit this incredible Asheville hotel for the day, and I highly recommend doing it because it’s beautiful, an extremely Instagrammable local icon, and the views are always amazing. Remember that parking is free for the first three hours, but then there is a fee that changes seasonally, so please call if you have questions. 

Also, there is no complimentary parking during the holiday season (October to December). Parking is limited, so taking an Uber, Lyft, or AVL ride from your location during peak hours or during the holiday season is easier.

With all the information you’ve gathered about the hotel throughout this article, it’s now up to you how you want to spend your visit. You can choose between four excellent restaurants (remember to make reservations), go with the flow and get drinks and tapas as you go, or get a hot chocolate and a homemade pastry and walk around the hallways and the terrace. But, of course, the afternoons offer the best views. 

If you are into history, you’ll love taking the 45-minute self-guided Audio History tour covering the early years of the hotel, the Arts & Crafts style furniture collection, and the visits of many famous guests (George Gershwin, Harry Houdini, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and even President Obama have stayed here!). Bring your headphones.  

The atrium of the Vanderbilt Wing shows informative short videos from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. You can also buy the excellent book Built for the Ages by Bruce Johnson on one of the retail promenades and read it in the Great Hall by one of the gigantic fireplaces while sipping a cocktail. 

The hallway’s walls feature the many stories (including ghost stories!) this hotel is made of. My kids used to be obsessed with the friendly, kind ghostly presence of the Pink Lady of the Grove Park Inn. I won’t tell you more, but her story is dated in the 1920s and featured in one of the halls. Don’t worry – she’s a cute pink presence!

The Grove Park Inn also has a Winter Concert Series , and there are individual tickets for purchase for guests not staying at the hotel.

Business Meetings, Conventions, Weddings, and Other Special Events at The Omni Grove Park Inn

The Omni Grove Park Inn offers 31 meeting rooms for those planning a special event, including the 17,760-square-foot Grand Ballroom and the  8,800-square-foot Heritage Ballroom. No matter how big or small the event you’re planning is, there will be a perfect space for it, and world-class services are included to make it successful. 

The open-air Vanderbilt Terrace overlooking the mountains is the perfect venue for smaller summer weddings. At the same time, the Mountain View Terrace and the Skyline Room (both indoors) boast floor-to-ceiling windows and gigantic fireplaces and can accommodate more people without resigning the views. 

The historic Country Club building and the Seely Arts & Craft-inspired Pavilion offer lovely, cozy settings for weddings, featuring gigantic fireplaces and views of the mountains and the golf course. 

The Omni Grove Park Inn Neighborhood

The quaint neighborhood surrounding The Omni Grove Park Inn is beautiful, and the wide, wooded streets are perfect for walking and jogging. You can even walk downtown if you have the time and get to explore North Asheville. Three of the neighborhood’s areas, Grove Park, Proximity Park, and Sunset Terrace, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 

Also, the Grove Park plan was the first in Asheville to implement curvilinear streets, parks, and trees in a naturalistic setting, abandoning the grid street layout. Edwin Grove purchased the land surrounding the Grove Park Inn and sold it to developers. 

Richard Sharp Smith, the supervising architect of the Biltmore Estate, was responsible for the neighborhood’s architectural style known as “English Derived Craftsman,” inspired by the American and English Arts & Crafts Movement. 

Historic Charlotte Street became the home of many local businesses and continues to be one of Asheville’s most beloved streets. There are great places to eat in this area, and many are off the tourist track. Charlotte Street is home to three Asheville favorites.

City Bakery has been awarded for its artisan bread and pastries, and its sandwiches are amazing (try the Breakfast Torta!). Owl Bakery sells naturally leavened bread and beautifully presented European-inspired pastries made by hand using local, seasonal ingredients (try the Cardamom Buns and the croissants). Finally, Taco Temple serves some of the most creative tacos in town! (I’m a big fan of the Tacos Al Pastor.)

About the omni grove park inn, the grove park inn is set on 150 acres in north asheville with sweeping views of the blue ridge mountains and downtown asheville..

The hotel’s construction was completed in 1913 as a luxury vacation resort in the then up-and-coming mountain town of Asheville.

The property includes over seven bars and restaurants catering to the needs of overnight guests and day visitors alike. In addition to the dining options, there are several things to see and do, including a self-guided audio tour , terraces to relax on while enjoying the view and an onsite golf course.

The Grove Park Inn is also home to a world class spa , but be sure to book a room and reserve you spa session in advance as they are only available to the hotel’s overnight guests.

The Omni Grove Park Inn is located in North Asheville and is less than a 10 minute drive from downtown. Access to the hotel is available to overnight guests and day visitors alike.

Parking rates vary seasonally so make sure you check the latest parking rates on their website . Generally, the first 3 hours of self-parking are free from January through March. From April to September you can typically park for free for one hour. And during the busy fall and holiday season, the only available self-parking is $25 per day.

There is no controlled access to the lobby and visitors are welcome to explore the premises.

Another fun way to experience the Grove Park Inn while checking out the rest of what Asheville has to offer is riding the hop-on hop-off Trolley Tour that stops at the Grove Park Inn. This is an especially good idea during fall and the holidays when parking is $25 per day and can often reach capacity.

Omni Grove Park Inn Restaurants, Bars and Coffee Shops

The Omni Grove Park Inn has abundant dining options and some of the best rated restaurants in Asheville. With four full service restaurants, several bars and a coffee shop there is something for every appetite.

Sunset Terrace

Arguably the Grove Park Inn’s most well-known restaurant , Sunset Terrace is the epitome of outdoor dining with panoramic views. The beautifully plated entrees make for the perfect dining experience for special occasions.

Note that Sunset Terrace is open seasonally , so be sure to check their website before making plans. Reservations are recommended and can be made online .

Sunset Cocktail Terrace

If you are not interested in a full-blown meal but still want the view, the Sunset Cocktail Terrace is a great option. Just one level below the Sunset Terrace, the Sunset Cocktail Terrace offers hand crafted cocktails, local beers and small plates with an opportunity to enjoy a magnificent view. It is open daily from 11:00am to 9:00pm, weather permitting.

Vue 1913 is one of Asheville’s premier upscale dining establishments . As Asheville’s only AAA Four Diamond restaurant, it offers a great fine fine dining experience. This upscale restaurant with gourmet brasserie menu offers dishes with locally sourced ingredients.

On the menu you will find wagyu filet, vegetable risotto and elk tenderloin among plenty of other mouthwatering options.

The Vue 1913 is set on the main 10th floor lobby level in the Sammons wing with sweeping views of downtown Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Reservations are required and can be made on their website!

Edison Craft Ales + Kitchen

Edison Craft Ales + Kitchen is a great spot for a craft beer or cocktail and a casual bite to eat. This restaurant is one of the more casual restaurants at the Grove Park Inn , with a menu including soups and salads, burgers and sandwiches, and assorted entrees.

They have a huge covered porch with a fun atmosphere and incredible views. Reservations are recommended .

Blue Ridge Restaurant

Blue Ridge Restaurant is the Omni Grove Park Inn’s primary buffet restaurant . This artisanal buffet offers hotel guests and visitors daily breakfast, Sunday Brunch, Friday night seafood buffet and Saturday night prime rib dinner. Reservations are recommended for brunch and dinner.

Stance Coffee

You’ll find Stance Coffee tucked in The Marketplace shops. Their menu includes coffee, espresso drinks, tea, hot chocolate, Nitro cold brew, iced coffees, blended drinks, smoothies and even ice cream.

There isn’t any seating in the immediate area, but you can take your coffee to other parts of the hotel. Our suggestion: go sit by the fire in a rocking chair with a nice hot drink!

Omni Grove Park Inn Bars

• The Great Hall Bar : Set in the great hall lobby, enjoy music on the grand piano and the enormous fireplaces flanking the room.
• Presidents Lounge : Enjoy a drink and the views from this casual bar in the Sammons wing.
• Elaine’s Dueling Piano Bar : Live entertainment and cocktails, beer and wine every Thursday through Saturday night.

Things to Do at The Grove Park Inn

Play a round at the grove park inn golf course.

The Grove Park Inn is home to a world class golf course. Open year round, this is a great activity for golfers whether staying at the hotel or not.

The golf course was designed by Donald Ross, who also designed the famous Pinehurst golf course. The Grove Park Inn golf course is immaculately maintained with a beautiful surrounding.

Enjoy the Architecture

Built by E.W. Grove and his business partner and son-in-law Fred Seely, the Grove Park Inn is one of Asheville’s iconic structures and is steeped in history.

The craftsman-style buildings were built from stone quarried locally and set into the hillside. It’s as unique as it is impressive! As you enter the great hall you will feel the grandness of the hotel with its high ceilings and massive fireplaces flanking each side. It’s a great place to relax and take it all in.

One of our favorite places in all of Asheville is sitting in a rocking chair by the Omni Grove’s fireplaces. Especially when it’s cold out!

Relax at The Spa at Omni Grove Park Inn

Perhaps the most indulgent place in all of Asheville! The Spa at Omni Grove is like no other.

It’s nestled underground and has rock walls, arches and tunnels. It’s over 40,000 square feet and includes two waterfall pools, twenty water features and even a lap pool with 6,500 fiber-optic stars and underwater music.

Access to The Spa at Omni Grove is available only to guests of the Inn over 18 years old . Guests should plan to book services well in advance to ensure availability.

Catch the Panoramic Mountain Views

The hotel is set with the rear porches and terraces facing the southwest and is the perfect spot for beautiful sunsets! You will be in awe of the long range views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and views of downtown Asheville.

Visit Grovewood Village

While not officially part of the Grove Park Inn property, Grovewood Village is located adjacent to the hotel and is a gem in its own right. Grovewood Village is home to two museums, a restaurant, artist studios and a gallery.

ELDR is a great restaurant for lunch or dinner (or even brunch on weekends!) They have a unique gourmet menu with a wide variety of dishes. There is indoor and outdoor seating, so it’s a great option any time of year. Make a reservation in advance to secure a table!

The Estes-Winn Antique Car Museum is home to 20 classic American cars that are in immaculate shape. Admission is free but donations ($5 suggested) are greatly appreciated to maintain the collection. Its a great stop for car enthusiasts and kids love it (trust us!)

The Biltmore Industries Homespun Museum exhibits the history behind Grovewood Village, which includes a world class wool spinning weaving operation.

Note: both museums are closed from January through March.

Walk on the Sunset Trail

The Sunset Trail is a .7 mile out and back trail located at the Grove Park Inn. It’s a kid-friendly hike that has a few cute bridges along the way.

The Sunset Trail is ideal if you are staying on the property and want to stretch your legs for a bit, but probably not worth traveling to the Grove Park Inn alone for.

The festive holiday atmosphere at the Grove Park Inn makes it truly special and the perfect holiday destination.

The Great Hall is decorated top to bottom and there is nothing better than cozying up in a rocking chair by one of their massive fireplaces.

They have a hot chocolate bar set up for the season in the lobby. Just outside the Great Hall you’ll find Santa’s sleigh and an animatronic Santa and elf display that kids just love (it’s a perfect photo op!)

Also be sure to check out the National Gingerbread House competition with the finalists’ works of art displayed throughout the hotel.

Note that there is no complementary parking available from October through New Years. Self-parking is $25 per day.

The Grove Park Inn is a luxurious haven pulsing with Southern charm. Standing tall for over a century, this historic gem has hosted presidents, celebrities, and wanderers craving tranquility amidst the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains.

Nestled in Asheville’s Blue Ridge Mountains, the historic Omni Grove Park Inn exudes charm, elegance, and stunning vistas. Despite a brief prior visit, the allure of an overnight stay beckoned me back. The inn, as imagined, proved fabulous. Its architecture, the grand lobby’s stone fireplace, and vintage furnishings all harked back to grand hotels’ golden era. Our room, though lacking some natural light, boasted modern amenities and serene decor. Minor wear and tear aside, we were pleased and would consider a return. 

History of the Omni Grove Park Inn

Nestled in Asheville’s Blue Ridge Mountains, the Omni Grove Park Inn is a historic resort hotel exuding charm and elegance. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and boasting a consistent Four Diamond rating since 2001, it stands as a testament to architectural excellence and commitment to quality. Construction began in 1912, replacing several sanitariums, and was miraculously completed in under 12 months. The hotel’s iconic stacked granite stone, grand lobby with towering fireplaces, and stunning views have contributed to its fame. Opening its doors on July 12, 1913, the inn has hosted numerous U.S. presidents and other prominent figures. Today, owned by Omni Hotels since 2013, it continues to captivate visitors with its timeless allure, luxurious amenities, and unparalleled mountain vistas.

The Facade of the Inn

The Omni Grove Park Inn’s facade is a marvel, reminiscent of Yellowstone’s rustic inns yet grand in its own right. Inspired by its natural surroundings, the design boasts a striking stacked stone exterior that harmonizes with the Blue Ridge Mountains’ beauty. Completed in just one year with the help of 400 skilled workers and innovative tools, the inn showcases meticulous craftsmanship. From its massive stone fireplaces to its towering wooden beams, every detail speaks of dedication and artistry.

While the front exudes grandeur, the stacked stone facade at the back is equally impressive. Here, guests can bask in the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, whether relaxing on the terrace or enjoying the heated outdoor pool.

Stepping into the Omni Grove Park Inn, you’re greeted by a lobby of grand proportions. Its soaring ceilings, massive stone fireplaces, and rich wood finishes create a commanding atmosphere. While some may find its polished look reminiscent of a Disney Resort, the lobby’s charm is undeniable.

A highlight of the lobby is the opportunity to relax in one of the comfortable rocking chairs by the fireplaces. It’s the perfect spot for a morning coffee or tea. In the evenings, guests can unwind with a cocktail while enjoying live music.

The true gem of the lobby, however, is the stunning view from the Sunset Terrace. With sweeping panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it provides a picturesque backdrop for any occasion.

Dining & Drinking

For a meal or cocktail with a view, the Sunset Terrace at the Omni Grove Park Inn is a must-visit. Located at the back of the lobby, it offers awe-inspiring panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The Terrace is perfect for lunch, cocktails, or a romantic dinner. Guests can reserve tables overlooking the city, mountains, and the inn’s grounds for a truly special experience.

Aside from the views, the food and drinks are exceptional. The menu offers a variety of delicious dishes and libations, with friendly and attentive waitstaff ensuring a delightful dining experience.

Edison, Craft Ales & Kitchen

While we didn’t dine at Edison during our stay at the Omni Grove Park Inn, we did enjoy drinks on the outdoor patio, soaking in the breathtaking views and sunset. The ambiance and energy were amazing, and the scenery was unforgettable.

Later that same evening, we visited the indoor bar for some of Edison’s renowned craft cocktails and locally brewed beers. The drinks were expertly crafted and delicious.

Edison is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 am to 11 pm, and Friday through Sunday from 11 am to midnight, offering a great spot for lunch or an evening drink. Reservations are highly recommended for this popular establishment.

President’s Lounge Wine Bar

Tucked away in the Sammons Wing near the Heritage Ballroom, the President’s Lounge is a captivating collection of memorabilia, photographs, and articles from past U.S. Presidents. Stepping inside is like stepping back in time, immersed in the rich history and legacy of America’s leaders.

The decor resembles a classic library, with dark wood furnishings and plush armchairs exuding refinement. Adorned with photographs, paintings, letters, and artifacts, the walls tell the stories of the Presidents and their times.

The President’s Lounge also offers excellent drinks, enjoyed while gazing at the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains through the windows. It’s an ideal spot for a pre-dinner drink or nightcap, especially for history enthusiasts and those fascinated by the U.S. Presidency.

The Great Hall Bar

In the heart of the rustic lobby, the Great Hall Bar at the Omni Grove Park Inn is a perfect spot to unwind after exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains. Live music fills the room, creating a cozy atmosphere.

The bar’s ornate woodwork and impressive selection of spirits and cocktails make it a sight to behold. The knowledgeable and friendly bartenders are eager to suggest drinks based on your tastes.

One of our stay’s highlights was relaxing in a rocking chair by the fire, savoring our drinks and chatting with other guests.

Blue Ridge Restaurant

The Blue Ridge restaurant at the Omni Grove Park Inn offers a delightful farm-to-table breakfast buffet with a variety of options. They also host a Friday night seafood buffet and a Saturday night prime rib buffet.

The restaurant’s setting is breathtaking and complements the delicious food. The staff, like Stan, are incredibly accommodating and friendly. When we requested Eggs Benedict, not on the buffet, Stan and the chef went above and beyond to make it happen.

For those craving healthy eats, the Spa Cafe at Omni Grove Park Inn is a haven of nutritious delights. Their menu brims with wholesome meals and drinks to nourish both body and soul. With indoor and outdoor seating, guests can feast while soaking up the stunning surroundings. Open daily from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, it’s the ultimate spot for a revitalizing breakfast, lunch, or snack during a day of spa indulgence.

Activities at Grove Park Inn

The Grove Park Inn boasts an 18-hole golf course designed by Donald Ross in 1926, offering stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Recognized by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the top 20 courses in the U.S., it’s a must for golf enthusiasts. Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to the game, lessons are available to enhance your skills.

At the Grove Park Inn, guests can enjoy more than just golf, with top-rated tennis courts also on offer. Looking for a quick snack or a delicious meal during your stay at the Grove Park Inn? Head over to The Marketplace, located in the retail promenade of the Sammons Wing, where you can grab a great cup of coffee, some ice cream, or even a delicious pizza. The retail promenade also offers a variety of cute clothing shops and gift shops to browse through.

For those seeking more adventurous activities, visit the Nantahala Outdoor Center located in the promenade, where you can arrange for whitewater rafting, kayaking, zip-lining, and mountain bike tours.

Guest Rooms

To be honest, the guest rooms at Grove Park Inn could use a makeover. They seem a bit outdated and dimly lit. We also noticed that the sheets in our room, as well as our friends’ room, were a bit worn and rough to the touch. However, the beds were comfortable.

The accommodations are divided into three main areas: the Historic Main Inn, Vanderbilt Wing, and Sammons Wing.

Historic Main Inn

The Historic Main Inn, open since 1913, offers charming and cozy rooms at a good value. However, they’re smaller and less spacious than those in the Vanderbilt and Sammons Wings, making them less ideal for families or those needing more space.

The Main Inn has a unique history, rumored to be haunted by “The Pink Lady.” Legend has it that the spirit of a young woman who fell to her death in the 1920s still roams the halls, appearing in a pink ball gown or as a pink mist. Some guests and employees have reported feeling her presence, while others claim to have seen her by the lobby fireplaces. The Pink Lady is said to be fond of children and has been known to move objects or play with lights in the rooms. For the brave, Room 545 is rumored to be her favorite haunt.

Vanderbilt and Sammons Wings

The Sammons and Vanderbilt Wings, constructed in the 1960s and 1980s, boast larger rooms than the Main Inn. Although they could use a modern touch-up, they are more updated than the Main Inn. The Vanderbilt Wing is ideal for pet owners as it’s pet-friendly, unlike the Sammons Wing. Despite needing some updates, both wings offer cozy and comfortable accommodations.

For a touch of luxury, the Club Floor suites are a worthwhile splurge. These suites include access to a private lounge offering complimentary breakfast, snacks, and evening hors d’oeuvres, along with a dedicated concierge service.

Regardless of your room choice, upgrading to a mountain vista room is highly recommended. The stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains are a highlight of staying at the Inn. Whether you’re enjoying the sunrise or sunset, relaxing in your room offers a front-row seat to nature’s beauty.

A Note About Getting to Your Room

One quirky thing we noticed about the Inn is that it’s a bit upside down. When you’re in the elevator heading to your room, you have to press the “down” button to go up! Yep, you descend from the lobby to your lower rooms. Let’s just say, I lost count of how many times I accidentally hit the “up” button!

Is the Omni Grove Park Inn Worth the Money?

The good part.

The Omni Grove Park Inn is a stunning blend of beauty and rustic charm. Overall, we were thrilled with our stay. The food and drinks were top-notch, the lobby’s fireplaces were so inviting we wanted to lounge in our PJ’s all day, and the views are truly some of Asheville’s finest. The spa is among the best in the country, and we couldn’t get enough of the Sunset Terrace, where the views changed magically with the day’s light.

The Inn’s location is perfect; downtown Asheville is just a short drive or Uber ride away, making it ideal for exploring the city’s vibrant scene. If you fancy dining out, there are plenty of excellent restaurants and bars nearby.

The Not So Great Part

With a few updates and some hospitality training, the Grove Park Inn could shine as brightly as it did in 1913. The rooms are seriously outdated and gloomy. They’re clean, but the dreariness makes them feel less than fresh. The bedding was also worn, with pilled sheets that gave off an old and tired vibe—something several TripAdvisor reviewers have also noted.

We had some hiccups with the hospitality. None of the bellhops offered to help with our bags when we arrived, even though we were clearly struggling. The front desk staff seemed unfriendly, and when we raised concerns about the bedding, they were dismissive. Employees in the halls acted like they didn’t want to be bothered, and some of the restaurant staff weren’t much better, although there were a few exceptions.

Was it worth the money? Yes, it’s pricey, but for a night or two in this historic inn, it was worth it. However, next time, a cozy B&B might be a better bet. Grove Park Inn, invest in those updates, new sheets, and staff training—this gem deserves to shine, not take a nosedive!

One of America’s most beautiful drives is along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Parkway runs from Virginia down to Cherokee, North Carolina. It has killer alpine vistas, fun twists and turns for 469 miles, and some of the world’s oldest mountains. Drive it yourself, or let someone else do the driving with a tour from Viator . Either way, don’t miss this stunning road trip!

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Straddling the states of Tennessee and North Carolina , the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is in the Smoky Mountains, more fondly known as “The Smokies”.

The name “Smoky” comes from the natural fog hanging over the mountain range. If you’ve ever been here, you’ve seen it… the mountains look like they’re covered in smoke.

Best Time to Visit Grove Park Inn

If you’re looking for mild weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) or fall (September to November). During these times, you can enjoy the beautiful mountain views and outdoor activities without the summer crowds.

If you’re looking to take advantage of the resort’s outdoor amenities, such as the golf course or pool, then the summer months of June through August would be the best time to visit. Keep in mind, however, that these months are peak season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices.

Save Money on Your Room

Omni Grove Park Inn can be quite expensive, especially if you book directly with the hotel .  You may save a little bit on your room by going through either Booking.com , Agoda or Trivago .

Estimated Budget for a Stay at The Grove Park Inn

Rooms typically start at around $250 per night and can go up to $1,000 or more per night for higher-end suites. Additionally, there are resort fees and taxes to consider, as well as any additional expenses for dining, spa treatments, or activities. Overall, a stay at Grove Park Inn can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars depending on your preferences and budget.

How to Get to the Grove Park Inn

If you’re flying in to stay at the Grove Park Inn, or anywhere else in Asheville, the Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) has daily non stop flights from some of the major cities in the U.S.  It’s a small airport that is easy to navigate.  Find a cheap flight on Expedia or CheapOair .  See my separate post on how to get the best deals on flights .

Once you arrive at the airport, you can pick up your rental car right at the baggage terminal.  I recommend Hertz , but you may find a better deal on AutoEurope .  See my tips and tricks for renting a car here .  Get directions from the airport, or from anywhere, to the Omni Grove Park Inn on Google Maps .

Uber and Lyft are both available from the Asheville Regional Airport.  Rides to the Grove Park Inn from the airport will cost approximately $25-$30 depending upon the time of day.

Shuttle Service

The Grove Park Inn does not provide a free shuttle service for their guests to or from the airport, but if you call them they will provide a service for a fee.

Arriving at the mountaintop resort that is The Omni Grove Park Inn, located in Asheville, N.C., is certainly impressive. The granite boulder-covered resort, acquired by Omni Hotels & Resorts in 2013, stands majestically before sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It recently underwent a $25-million restoration and renovation, which included the opening of EDISON, a new restaurant.

One of the Historic Hotels of America, Grove Park broke ground in 1912 and flourished in the 1920’s, in a time when guests were not allowed to consume alcohol and were discouraged from bringing children. F. Scott Fitzgerald took up residence in the hotel’s halls in the summers of 1935 and 1936, and the resort languished in the golden age of the 1950’s. Through a number of restorations and renovations, the resort remains an old-fashioned, yet luxurious destination resort, though it’s now one that welcomes children wholeheartedly. Today, the children’s programs keep kids 5 to 12 outdoors and having fun, while parents enjoy the slope-side golf course, the beyond-believable spa, and drinks from the sunset terrace.

During the resort’s long history, 10 presidents and countless celebrities have stayed in the very rooms your family can stay in today. Doors are fastened with small plaques announcing which famous person rested their head inside the room, and in what year. Guests have included magicians Harry Houdini and David Copperfield; actors Anthony Hopkins, Danny Glover and Gene Hackman; writers F. Scott Fitzgerald; dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov; Olympians Dorothy Hamill and Viktor Petrenko; presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Franklin D. Roosevelt; and even a beloved mouse by the name of Mickey.

The hotel’s mascot, Major Bear, is featured everywhere in The Omni Grove Park Inn, from children’s books sold in the resort’s stores to stuffed bears kids will want to take home, along with appearances from the fuzzy bear himself.

Guestrooms and suites can be selected in the Historic Main Inn, which was opened in 1913, the Vanderbilt Wing, the Sammons wing and the Club floor. Rooms feature free Wi-Fi, microwave, refrigerator, coffeemaker and pay-per-view and video games. The Main Inn rooms are furnished with craftsman-era furnishings, while the newer wings feature more spacious rooms. Rooms vary by view, with panorama corner rooms in the Main Inn and Sammons Wing boasting the best mountain views and more space. Mountain view rooms are found in the Contemporary wings and Main Inn, facing the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountain ranges and the resort's golf course. Property view rooms overlook the spa or property. Value rooms are small rooms with one bed in the Main Inn -- charming, yes, but not meant for families.

Club Rooms Selecting a Club Floor room will provide you extra amenities, as well as complimentary spa access, but alas, they are only for guests 18+.

The best Sunday brunch in Asheville. Everything one expects from a Brunch is there. Snow crab legs, oysters on the half shell, shrimp cocktail, all the egg dishes from scrambled eggs to eggs Benedict. Carved roast beef. Smoked fish to fried fish. Desserts are also fantastic. What a variety !

The Omni Grove Park Inn has been on our travel bucket list for a while now, and earlier this month we checked it off.

Glad we went, but won’t plan to stay here next time we return. The grounds are beautiful and we loved the large fireplaces in the lobby. We tried the restaurant Edison and the food was incredible (be sure to order the cookies for dessert!).

For $500 a night, the rooms did not meet luxury expectations. The two “queen beds” were actually two twins. The bed was uncomfortable and the bathroom was tiny.

With so many great places to stay in Asheville we will stay elsewhere but will be back to try dinner at the Sunset Terrace (which is closed for dinner in the winter).

Summer Camps Families can choose the Tennis Fun Camp, which provides tennis instruction for children ages 4 to 18, as well as swimming, or the Summer Fun Camp, which provides week-long programs for kids 5 to 12 under supervision, including arts and crafts, movies and swimming.

Cub's Adventure Camp Children ages 5 to 12 can join in daily, supervised camp-like activities that include arts and crafts, games and sports, as well as lunch for full-day attendees. Camps run half day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 to 4 p.m., or full day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a per day fee.

Kids' Night Out A Kids' Night Out program is available for children 5 to 12 Friday and Saturdays, 6 to 10 p.m., from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There is a fee, which includes a movie and dinner at the end of the evening. For an additional fee, children can stay until midnight. Reservations must be made in advance, and children must be potty trained.

Sports Complex The location of the resort's tennis courts, racquetball courts, lap pool and fitness center is also the location for the children's playground and programming. The 50,000-square-foot Sports Complex features indoor and outdoor tennis courts, racquetball courts, indoor heated pool, Ping-Pong and pool tables, as well as a gym with fitness classes, cardio machines and free weights.

Pools The indoor pool at the Sports Complex is suited for families, along with seasonal outdoor pool. The outdoor pool is open Memorial Day to Labor Day. Children under 14 must be supervised by an adult while at the pools.

Family Dining

EDISON The newest addition at Omni Grove Park Inn, EDISON features craft beers and Southern comfort food. It also offers both indoor and outdoor dining, with lovely views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Save this place for a night you're able to get a babysitter. Open for lunch and dinner until 11 p.m. nightly.

Vue 1913 Vue 1913 offers guests an American and French cooking flare in an upscale casual setting. Due is open for dinner.

Blue Ridge Serving up locally sourced, southern comfort cuisine, Blue Ridge is located in the Vanderbilt wing of the hotel and is the breakfast spot du jour. Brunch, lunch and dinner are also served here, with Friday and Saturday evenings featuring a prime rib and seafood buffet.

Sunset Terrace This is the place to dine when staying at the Grove Park Inn. With an outdoor patio that overlooks the spa, golf course and the Blue Ridge Mountains, this spot becomes popular at sunset. Indoor dining is also available, and even on a Wednesday night, during our stay, the place was fully occupied at 9:30 p.m. by families. Open for lunch and dinner, steak and seafood are top selections

Spa Cafe Attached to the spa, but accessible for all guests, this lunch and afternoon spot provides a selection of healthy menu options, including salads and sandwiches. The Cafe is open 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Cabana Grille and Bar This poolside, casual and open-air restaurant is open only during the day, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and seasonally. It's the spot for burgers, hot dogs, quesadillas, salads and sandwiches. This is a no-brainer for lunch when spending the day at the outdoor pool with the kids.

Planning & Tips

All About the Extras Resort Fee There is a $25 daily resort charge, which includes local calling, in-room Wi-Fi access, in-room coffee and tea, onsite shuttle services, a guided history tour, daily newspapers located in the Great Hall, and access to the Sports Complex.

Babysitting Babysitters can be arranged through the hotel concierge, especially for children too young for the children's programs.

Parking At such an expansive size, parking can be tricky. If you elect to park in the covered parking that connects to the inn, it will cost you daily. For a couple dollars more, you can valet and let someone else make the trek to the parking. Those who valet receive bottles of water in the car every time you depart the hotel. Free parking is available, uncovered, but drop your bags before you attempt to walk the distance.

A Walk in the Park Located in the Vanderbilt wing, this hallway of stores include Christmas in the Park, Treasures from the Park, Signature of Grove Park and Tastings of Grove Park, with a great selection of resort gear, cooking gear, boutique clothing and jewelry, Christmas ornaments and more.

The Art of Smart Timing Asheville is a great destination to enjoy cool mountain summers and gorgeous, colorful falls, both peak times to visit the resort. In the winter, the mountains are blanketed in snow and provide another picturesque setting, although the resort's kids' programs are not available during this time. As spring begins to bring life back to the mountains and the resort is awash in floral colors, families begin to return for the pre-season quiet at the resort.

Getting There Asheville Regional Airport, while small, is serviced by AirTran, American, Continental, Delta, United and US Airways. However, a drive along one of the nation's most picturesque highways, the Blue Ridge Parkway, is the best way to arrive in Asheville, with numerous scenic overlooks well marked for stopping along the way. Asheville can be reached via highways I-26, I-40 and I-240.

Getting Around A shuttle service is available around the property, which is especially helpful when heading to the Sports Complex or outdoor swimming pool.

For Mom and Dad Elaine's Dueling Piano Bar Advertised as a "delightfully nightly good time," Elaine's is known across Asheville for being a unique dueling piano bar. Guests are invited to shout out requests and dance. The bar is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The Spa This 43,000-square-foot facility is such a site to behold as a centerpiece of the resort they provide a viewing window to get a peak into the indoor pool that rests beneath a stone ceiling and surroundings. Indoor waterfalls, majestic stone architecture and unique spa treatments make this a must-see for parents. The spa also features an adult-only outdoor pool (season), and guests may purchase daily spa passes to use the pool and saunas, although they can cost a per day fee.

Check-in and valet parking are a breeze, and as soon as you step into the lobby, you’ll be amazed by the beautiful seating arrangements. But the real anticipation sets in when you see your room. I stayed in the spacious and comfortable 6th floor of the Sammons Wing, but you can choose from plenty of other options in the Vanderbilt Wing.

Trust me, you’ll be amazed at how enormous this place is!

My Omni Grove Park Inn Room

Inside my guest room was a king-sized bed with a Serta mattress, top-notch linens, a flat-screen HDTV, a desk, and a cozy corner seating area. The bathroom features a shower/bath combo, a light-up mirror, and fabulous Nest toiletries. With so many different room types available, you can pick the perfect level of luxury for your stay.

The real showstopper at the Omni Grove Park Inn is the breathtaking views from the balcony overlooking the spa and picturesque mountains. And don’t worry; they still offer pay-per-view movies for your entertainment.

Pro Tip: If you’re traveling with a furry friend, you’ll be happy to know that many rooms in the Vanderbilt Wing are pet-friendly.

The Famous Sunset Terrace

When it comes to dining, the esteemed  Sunset Terrace  is an absolute must. Indulge in a delectable meal, starting with the must-try poached asparagus with English peas and mushrooms, recommended by our server to my friend and me. 

The 5 oz. Miyazaki Beef Ribeye is a steak lover’s dream; which was so tender I could cut it with a fork. The steak’s flavor was unlike any I’d had; I enjoyed my steak with a side of béarnaise sauce and seasonal vegetables.

Save room for the heavenly S’Mores dessert.

Reserve your spot in advance at Sunset Terrace to see the most magical sunset in Asheville and watch the skies go through the colors of the rainbow as the sun goes down.

Another fantastic dining option is Edison, Craft Ales + Kitchen. This artistic and sophisticated space serves up delicious dishes like Fried Green Tomatoes, Pimento Cheese Toast, Shrimp and Grits, and Scottish Salmon.

Though I didn’t have a spa treatment or tour of the facility, I have heard from countless people that this is  one of the most spectacular spas in the whole country . This unrivaled indulgence is #1 on my to-do list the next time I visit Asheville. I can’t wait to hear the underwater music in this $50 million facility for myself!

Located in northern Asheville , North Carolina, on the fringes of the Grove Park Country Club, The Grove Park Inn lures guests with its leafy surroundings. Travelers say autumn is a great time to visit, as the rooms offer fantastic views of the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountain ranges' kaleidoscopic fall foliage. • Legend has it that a woman known as "The Pink Lady" fell to her death from the fifth-floor balcony of the historic main inn in 1920. Visitors and staff swear they still feel her presence in the hotel. Paranormal enthusiasts and adventurous spirits can stay in the room (545) by request.
• Local favorite popcorn purveyor Poppy's created a signature mix for the Grove Park Inn that can only be purchased at the resort's retail store, The Pink Pig. The "GPI Mix" combines salted caramel and pimento cheese flavors. 
• Framed posters line the walls of the Vanderbilt Wing, displaying the names, faces and years visited for all of the Grove Park Inn's celebrity guests. The roster includes 10 sitting U.S. presidents, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Trey Anastasio, and Richard Simmons.

This massive resort, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2013, has grand views of downtown Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers all kinds of resort amenities; it's well worth visiting even if you don't stay here.

On the eve of its birthday, the inn underwent a thorough renovation and a change of ownership (to Omni). Gone were the old dark furnishings in the guest rooms (to the dismay of many) in favor of a specialized computer desks, lots of melon-colored throws and a more contemporary look overall.

The upscale 513-room hotel is spectacularly beautiful inside and out; built from stacked stones and dating back more than 100 years, it is surrounded by one of the most revered golf courses in the area, and comes equipped with an enormous spa and several restaurants and bars.

Floating on your back in the subterranean mineral pool at The Omni Grove Park Inn ’s world-renowned spa, it’s easy to imagine this peaceful grotto-like space as your own secret retreat. But the Cherokee people first recognized the Asheville area’s restorative nature centuries ago. Built on the largest white quartz deposit in the state, Asheville is a city long believed to promote spiritual well-being and physical health. In the early twentieth-century, The Grove Park Inn founder Edwin Wiley Grove sought Asheville’s clean mountain air as a cure for chronic bronchitis, and was so enamored with the lush landscape, he stayed and opened his own wellness resort, building the Arts & Crafts-style showpiece in just under a year.

More than a hundred years later, guests are still making their way to The Omni Grove Park Inn to recharge. You can curl up in front of the two soaring stone fireplaces in the historic Great Hall. Tuck into a farm-fresh meal at Edison (or one of eight other dining options) or sip a glass of wine on the porch at sunset. Maybe a lavish breakfast-in-bed spread is just the indulgence you need. At the sprawling 43,000-square-foot spa , which was added as part of an extensive renovation in 2001, it’s easier than ever to unplug. In fact, phones and tablets are banished to your locker upon arrival. Pamper yourself with a day-pass for access to 18,000 square-feet of pre- and post- treatment amenities—mineral pools, plunge pools, saunas, steam rooms, relaxation lounges, and more.

To elevate the experience, repeat guests, know to secure sessions in the perennially-booked Therapeutic Wellness Pod well ahead of time. The egg-shaped capsule looks built for space travel, and the treatment, which includes heat, gemstone, and vibrational therapy in addition to mood enhancing colored lights and aromatherapy, is equally otherworldly.

Later, over a cup of herbal tea by the fireplace in the spa’s interior relaxation lounge, start planning your next trip because, like Mr. Grove and all those who came before him, one visit to Asheville is never enough.

Grove Park Inn: A Hotel Built On History And Charm

Asheville, North Carolina  — a three hour drive from Atlanta   — has a long history as a place of healing that documents as far back 1795, beginning with the Native American Indians, yet comes full circle today as the gem of the south for food lovers.

With a long line of physicians arriving in Asheville to further underscore its conduciveness to healing (particularly tuberculosis), it was the coming of the railroad in 1880, and the arrival of Dr. S. Westray Battle in 1885, that caused the super wealthy to take note. Among the many great and legendary arrivals to follow Battle were George Vanderbilt, with an ailing mother in tow, and Dr. Edwin Wiley Grove  — a patent medicine manufacturer whose pharmaceutical company made Bromo-Quinine. Each of the two men remained in Asheville. Vanderbilt stayed to build his family home, the Biltmore Estate, and Grove went on to conceive and develop a massive indoor commercial mall called Grove Arcade, in addition to the Grove Park neighborhood and the Grove Park Inn .

As the crown jewel of them all, Grove Park Inn was imagined by Grove as a place of pure majesty amidst a mountainous landscape in total absence of any form of contemporary design. Challenged to find an architect that could grasp the concept, Grove defied the norm, entrusting his son-in-law, Fred L. Seely, as designer and contractor. Despite Seely having no formal training in architecture, Grove Park Inn  — a now Historic Hotels of America member  — opened on July 1, 1913, following a construction period just three days shy of 12-months. Balanced and blending perfectly into its surroundings, it is a retreat of architectural significance visited by a long list of dignataries to include presidents and other U.S. royalty.

And while history is always good to know, food is better to taste!

With ambitions that include, but far often exceed traditional southern style cuisine and a craft beer scene recognized as one of the best in the country, Asheville's pedestrian friendly downtown scene is loaded with opportunities to depart fat and happy. The secret, according to some, is the incorporation of local ingredients and imported chefs from all around the globe in a community populated by transplants arriving from destinations beyond the southeastern United States. Either way, for the true foodie, Asheville is a must visit!

Grove Park's Culinary Scene

Imagine how wonderful it would be to start the day with a lavish buffet anchored by a juice bar offering fresh squeezed juice tonics, a beautiful array of fresh fruits and the option of a gluten free bar. On the flip side of that lies all of the breakfast traditions known to Americans from clear across the country, including a pan of buttery sticky buns, an omelette bar with all the trimmings, biscuits and gravy and more served daily at the resort's Blue Ridge Artisanal Buffet. Boasting "farm to table" ingredients, Blue Ridge serves breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets, a sumptuous Friday night seafood buffet, a ribs galore buffet on Saturday nights and a special holiday dinner buffet all in a resort casual atmosphere overlooking the mountains.

Also situated to take advantage of the mountainous views, is the resort's signature dining venueVue 1913. A AAA Four Diamond recipient, this American Brasserie under the culinary expertise of chef James Lumley, a Clive Owen double, encapsulates Asheville's modern day theme of a foodie haven. Lumley gets it. His food is an art designed to appeal to the eyes and appease the palate with both French and American emphasis. Take for example, a citrus, charred grapefruit arugula salad with lemon rouille; Lime, creme fraiche, bacon and lump crab; Sorghum braised vegetables, duck confit and sweet potato gnocchi; Roasted shallot-garlic croquette, seasonal vegetables, lambchetta with pinot au jus  — get the picture?

And while all of the above sounds good, wait till the weather warms back up to endure the outdoor experience of fresh seafood and a mouth watering steak at Sunset Terrace!

The Omni Grove Park Inn, in Asheville, NC is one of the most unique and beautiful luxury hotels in the area. Its guests will have access to lavish rooms and amenities on site. The inn has a long history in North Carolina and is a place you will want to visit.

History of the Omni Grove Park Inn

Edwin W. Grove purchased land to build a huge mountain lodge in Western North Carolina. He wanted this grand place to be built from the stones of Sunset Mountain, where the lodge would sit. Mr. Grove hired his son-in-law, Fred L. Sealy, as the architect, and the Grove Park Inn took shape.

According to the National Park Service, the inn was built in five sections of terraced steps inside the mountain. Grove Park Inn opened in 1913. There have been many famous quests over the years, such as Henry Ford, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Woodrow Wilson, and Eleanor Roosevelt, to name a few. During World War II, the federal government took over the inn. It was used by U.S. Navy sailors for rest and relaxation and also to detain diplomats from nations that opposed the Allies.

Renovations and updates took place in 1955, and the inn was opened to the public once more. In 2001, major expansions and renovations were made and the luxury spa was added.

Hello! Does Grove Park allow day visitors only? For example, could we come just to enjoy dinner, drinks, some shopping etc without staying overnight? If so, what is and is not allowed for day visitors? Is there a charge to visit just for the day or afternoon? Thanks!

We do allow/welcome day visitors to our resort. We offer the first 3 hours of self-parking with our compliments so you can have the opportunity to dine, shop, and enjoy the resort, There is tiered pricing after your first 3 hours and a separate charge if you wish to valet park.

The Spa typically fills up in advance and we normally reserve treatments and day passes for our in-house guests. Please give us a call for more information regarding use of The Spa.

There is no charge to walk around and it appears that anything goes. Perhaps sweatpants are not a good idea though.

Definitely a great place even to visit. Try to get there in time for cocktails on the terrace!

The restaurants are open to non-guests but the spa is exclusive to guests on weekends and holidays (which is in the spa policies online).

We tried to go see the Gingerbread but were turned away in the middle of the road. Don't go here

Yes. Parking can be a little bit of an issue so arrive early so you can find a place to park.

I believe you can just be sure to make a reservation for meals beforehand they are quite busy.

Hotel welcomes day visitors and restaurant serves everyone whether you are staying at the hotel or not. Not sure about the spa. You may want to call if you're interested. Nice place to visit.

You can visit without staying at the hotel.

Hi, we have friends that do just that. Only charge is if you valet park, other than that you can enjoy the hotel just as if you were a guest. Depending on what time of year I'd suggest rsvp for dinner.
