Start your East Coast adventure in Cairns. Embark on a scenic journey to Townsville to catch a ferry to the beautiful Magnetic Island! 

You’re in for a treat as we spend the next 2 days exploring Magnetic Island – home to wild koalas, wallabies, and golden sandy beaches. Snorkel in the crystal blue island waters, take the guided Fort’s walk offering incredible views of the island and chill at the hostel. Our hostel even has an on-site wildlife park where you can get up close to Aussie wildlife such as koalas and wallabies (additional cost). Want to explore the rest of the island? Rent a 4×4 ‘topless jeep’ and drive around the island with your mates (available for hire)!

Arriving in the morning, we'll soak up the sun at Airlie’s lagoon, wander around the town or explore the surrounding national park! We'll hit up the hostel bar for some evening drinks enjoying the sunsets! Enjoy some days in paradise before our journey to Townsville, the gateway to Magnetic Island!

Noosa is our next stop. We’ll arrive in the afternoon, chill by the beach and watch the sunset. Tomorrow, we’ll take a hike over the coastal headlands taking in the amazing sea views. The rest of the day is yours: chill by the pool, grab a surfboard or boogie board from your hostel (free) or have a couple-a beers at the bar before enjoying a BBQ at your hostel this evening. Today you also have the chance to join a Noosa Everglades Kayak adventure (optional add-on).

Our accommodation gives us easy access to the besgt attractions, including the man-made wonder of Streets Beach and the cultural hub of Southbank. For those seeking a wildlife, take the opportunity to visit the renowned Australia Zoo and witness wildlife in action (optional add-on).

Welcome to Surfers Paradise! Renowned for its epic waves, endless nightlife, and sandy beaches, Surfers Paradise promises to be a highlight of your East Coast journey.As the sun sets, it's time to dress up and venture out for an unforgettable night on the town, hopping between fantastic bars and clubs on our optional pub crawl (add-on). For thrill-seekers, your tour guide can assist in arranging a visit to the Dreamworld, the Gold Coast's most famous theme park, or even book you a stand-up paddleboarding session (optional add-on). The following day, take a moment to unwind by the pool, soak up the sun, or delve into the city's wonders at your own pace. 

Today we reach Byron Bay! Enjoy yourself in this paradise by surfing with the locals, take part in a morning yoga lesson and explore the real Byron by the beach. Brace yourself for sunrises at the Byron lighthouse and indulge in the local farmers markets before we move onto our last location, Sydney! 

Arrive at your final destination - Sydney!  You will visit the iconic landmarks that define this magnificent city, including the awesome Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge!

Yes! Most of our customers are solo travellers. 

The East Coast is one of the most popular backpacker travel routes in the world and you are bound to cross paths with plenty of other travellers with various backgrounds. 

No. Within the Oz Adventure package, ULTIMATE supports you with our best travel structure that covers transport, accommodation and activities so you can relax without the pressure of following a group or guide. Should you require a full guided tour, check out our Highlights and Explorer tours.

The Oz Adventure package starts in Sydney and ends in Cairns. Your travel pass is valid for 30 days and the package officially starts on Fridays or Sundays with an overnight bus to Byron Bay. Your bus will depart any time after 6pm.

There is no official time for you to arrive into Sydney, but most travellers will choose to arrive in the morning or add additional nights in Sydney and arrive one or two days earlier.

Package Departure Point:  Sydney Central Station, Forecourt, Coach Bay 5 &, Haymarket NSW 2000.

Our Oz Adventure package is designed for travellers 18-35 who want some more flexibility to their travel arrangements. The itinerary requires a moderate level of fitness. You will spend 2-4 nights in each location staying in centrally located and sociable hostels. 

We partner at some of the most popular social hostels on the East Coast of Australia.  All prices are based on shared accommodation in 6 to 10 bed share mixed dorm style rooms. 

Byron Bay - Wake Up! Byron Bay, Surf House Byron, Aquarius Hostel or YHA Byron Bay. 

Surfers Paradise - Budds Hostel or Bunk Hostel.

Brisbane - YHA Brisbane or Bunk Hostel.

Noosa - Flashpackers Hostel, Nomads Noosa, Bounce Hostel or YHA Halse Lodge. 

Airlie Beach - Base Backpackers or YHA Airlie Beach

Magnetic Island - Base Backpackers

Cairns - Gilligans Hostel or Bounce Cairns.

We have done our best to include all fees and charges but there are some key touring components that are required to be paid on arrival whilst on tour.  

  • Fraser Island Insurance Fee ($30 AUD) - Paid direct on arrival 
  • Great Barrier Reef Conservation Levy ($20 AUD) Paid direct on arrival

Optional Activity Levies - Whilst on tour, various local activity operators may charge a levy that is to be paid direct on the day your activity takes place. These will be communicated to you when booking any optional activities.  A local 'levy' is generally a tax or administration fee. 

An airport shuttle on arrival is not included.  You are required to make your own way to the overnight bus departure point

The great thing is, there is no bad time to travel to Australia! The country is so vast that depending when and where you plan on travelling you're always likely to hit some sun! At certain times of the year there can be tropical storms in some locations across Australia, there can be hot, humid weather and there can be beautiful sunny skies with a cooler breeze. As you'll be travelling such a wide area from South to North you are likely to experience a bit of everything. Please Note - We cannot predict the weather and cannot guarantee perfect days, but we will do our best to make the most of days when Mother Nature isn't in our favour!

If you have an existing medical condition or disability that may affect your trip or how we deliver our experience, we ask that you inform us in writing at the time of your booking. You may be asked to obtain a medical certificate and if we reasonably feel we are unable to accommodate your particular needs, we reserve the right to decline your booking.

Twin room and Single room upgrades are available, but are subject to availability and can take up to ten business days to confirm.  Private rooms are not available on our Bus transport, Whitsundays Sailing or Fraser Island Trip components. Please note that Single rooms may have shared bathroom facilities. You can request a Twin or Single room upgrade via the booking process or email our reservations team after you have made your booking. 

Yes. It is mandatory that you travel with a comprehensive travel insurance policy to cover the likes of cancellation, personal injury and medical expenses. By making a booking with us, you acknowledge that you have obtained a policy and are covered. You are responsible for reading and understanding the details of the policy that you are taking out. You should book your travel insurance at the time of booking your trip.

We are unable to book flights, but we always recommend using online search engines to research the best available flight routes, prices and times. To ease your experience, we suggest booking via a Travel Agent or directly with your preferred airline. 

Travel insurance is required to participate in this tour. We recommend that you find and compare various policies to ensure you have an appropriate level of coverage for you adventure. Not sure where to start? You can find some trusted Travel Insurers here .

On our Group Tours, your transport and accommodation along with the meals and activities listed on the itinerary are all included in your tour price. While you are travelling you may wish to participate in additional activities which you will need to budget for. While travelling you may wish to eat and drink out or you may plan to cook and prepare some of your own meals.

As a guide, we recommend you budget an additional $40 - $60AUD per day for spending money . Please note that all travellers are different and you may wish to travel with additional spending money. There are amazing optional activities and food options on offer on the East Coast and if you desire to experience most of them, you may wish to budget for additional spending money.

To book the East Coast Oz Adventure Package, select your chosen departure date, enter your details and pay your $200 package deposit. Your final payment is due 45 days prior to your start date.

Once you book, we’ll send you a booking confirmation. Once your trip is paid in full, you will be issued with a Travel Pass, Accommodation and Activity Vouchers.

To make your booking, select your chosen departure date and any optional extras you would like to book. If you are unsure about optional extras or if you need additional accommodation before or after your tour, you can let us know later via email. If you have a travel date in mind but you’re not ready to pay in full, you can secure your spot with a $200 deposit. We’ll send you a booking confirmation as well as important information about your tour.  Your final payment is due 45 days before your tour date and you will be sent an automatic reminder. You can make payments on your tour balance sooner or regularly via our website here .   A non refundable 1.8% booking processing fee applies to each booking.

This package is self guided and you are not guaranteed to travel in a group. Most travellers will be solo. Please read our  terms, conditions and cancellation policies  before booking your East Coast itinerary package. 

This is not a group tour, so you only travel with whoever you book for. Whether solo, with your partner, friend or group of your choice, spend your downtime how you like and make memories with your tribe!

Whenever you embark on a tour during your itinerary (like your Whitsunday sailing trip or K'gari 4WD), rest assured they will be adventurous backpacker-style trips, attracting similar types of travellers.

This is a semi-guided itinerary, meaning that professional skippers and tour guides lead any time spent on individual tours (like sailboats, 4WD camping tours, reef tours, and the likes). However, the in-between bits like travel days, downtime and free days are up to you.

That means nobody will be waking you up for your early bus or checking into hostels with you, however, it makes your time in Australia undeniably more personalised and flexible. If you are looking to travel with a group of other backpackers and be guided through every leg of your journey by a local leader, check out our  fully guided group itineraries .

This itinerary includes 4 breakfasts, 6 lunches and 4 dinners (14 meals in total) all during your guided tours.  The rest of the meals are up to you, and you will have plenty of access to bars, restaurants, cafes and supermarkets along the East Coast.

Yes, we strongly recommend that travellers purchase their own travel insurance before their East Coast trip. Travel insurance is not included in your package price, and East Coast Tours is not responsible for personal injury, operator cancellations or delays.

We recommend about $60 to $100 AUD spending money per day. This will cover you for a meal in a restaurant, a couple of beers and some supermarket supplies daily. For details on your daily spending budget in Australia, check out our  budget travel guide !

You will stay in a variety of central hostels on this trip including 15 nights in shared hostel dorms (Byron Bay, Rainbow Beach, Noosa, Airlie Beach & Cairns), 2 nights in a Whitsunday sailing vessel, 2 nights in a deluxe K'gari (Fraser Island) campsite with your tent and gear included, along with 2 overnight buses.

Of course! If you prefer some privacy, you can absolutely upgrade to private rooms. Please note that you will pay the difference from a shared dorm to a private room, and all accommodation is subject to availability. This itinerary includes bus transport which is primarily a  Greyhound Whimit Pass . Greyhound Busses are deluxe coaches with in-seat USB charging, wifi, reclining seats, air conditioning and onboard bathrooms. If you wish to upgrade your package, you can book a  rental car or campervan through our friendly travel experts to go your own way!

Daily itinerary

Day 1: sydney.

Your adventure begins in Sydney (Warrane in the language of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, who are the traditional owners of the land on which Sydney is now located). This is the iconic harbour city, the glittering jewel in the east coast’s crown. Make your own way to the joining hotel where you’ll meet your leader and fellow travellers at 2pm for a welcome meeting in the lobby. Afterwards, head out to explore the historic area around the hotel before heading out for dinner. If you arrive early, there’s plenty to see and do – why not head down to Circular Quay and check out the world-famous Opera House, or if you’re feeling brave, opt to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge to catch an epic view over this stunning city. Alternatively, you might like to take the ferry over to Manly Beach for some sun, sea and surf – soaking up the panoramic view of the iconic Sydney cityscape as you cruise along the glittering waters.

As this is a combination trip, your group leader and the composition of your group may change at this location. Please note that the departure on 7th January 2023 will stay on Fraser Island rather than at Rainbow Beach. Due to driving times we won’t be able to visit Noosa and Carlo Sandblow on this departure.

In this 14-day guide we show you how to see the very best of the east coast, from  Sydney  all the way up to  Cairns  in the tropical north. Enjoy urban adventures, island escapes, amazing wildlife encounters, sunset sailing trips and spectacular underwater experiences along the way. It will be two weeks you'll never forget.

Day 1: See Sydney's best harbour views

Hit the historic streets of the harbourside precinct  The Rocks,  where you'll see some of the oldest buildings in the country. Download the free Walking the Rocks app to uncover the history of places such as  Cadman's Cottage , built in 1816, and  Dawes Point Battery , the oldest remaining European structure in the country, built in 1791. Drop into the  Museum of Sydney  to learn how the city grew from its colonial beginnings to become the metropolis it is today. Take a walk across the  Harbour Bridge,  or climb the arches with  BridgeClimb  for an awesome view. Then catch the F3 Parramatta River ferry (from Circular Quay, wharf 5) to  Cockatoo Island  and spend the night in one of the heritage houses, holiday apartments or semi-permanent glamping sites. Sleeping on this island, in the very middle of Sydney Harbour, guarantees you'll wake up with a harbour view.

Lace up your walking shoes and step out on one of the world's greatest urban walking trails . Catch the 440 bus from Central Station to Bronte, then walk along the clifftops to Bondi Beach and beyond to Watsons Bay. There you can enjoy a waterside lunch of fish and chips at the  Watsons Bay Hotel  or at one of the two  Doyles seafood restaurants  (one is on the beach and one on the wharf). Catch the 380 bus or an Uber back to Bondi Beach and check into a room with a view at QT Bondi.

Day 3: Go wild in Manly

The ferry ride across Sydney Harbour to Manly (from wharf 3, Circular Quay) is one of the best value scenic cruises around.  Learn to surf on Manly Beach  or, if you're game, ride the 135 bus from Manly Wharf (or grab an Uber) up to North Head and take a ghost tour of the old  Quarantine Station . Soak in the harbour views from your heritage accommodation at  Quarantine Station  and enjoy a meal at the  Boilerhouse Restaurant . 

Day 4: Discover Newcastle's urban edge

Catch the train from Sydney's Central Station to Newcastle, a laidback, beachy city two hours north of Sydney. From the train station, make your way on foot to the neighbourhood of Honeysuckle, which has a riverside strip of restaurants and hotels. Hire a bike from one of the  swipe-and-ride bike stands  and pedal the five-kilometre (three-mile) bike path along the river and around the beaches. Cool off in one of the many ocean pools along the way – the art deco pavilions at  Merewether Ocean Baths  and  Newcastle Ocean Baths  are favourites with photographers. Explore the edgy art scene in the  Renew Newcastle  pop-up galleries in the city centre – the galleries change regularly as sites are earmarked for development but at any given time you'll find everything from book binders to fashion, jewellery, stickers and light installations. Then stay in one of the waterfront hotels such as Rydges Newcastle , and watch the tugboats come and go in the working harbour. 

Day 5: Bask in the Brisbane sun

Brisbane, an easy 80-minute flight from Newcastle or 90-minute flight from Sydney, is one of the country's sunniest cities so soak it up on a riverside walk, or see it from the top of the Story Bridge , 80 metres (87 yards) above the Brisbane River. For an extra adrenaline rush you can abseil down the bridge's anchor pier on the way back. Catch the free CityHopper ferry from the Holman Street Ferry Terminal beneath the bridge and cruise to South Bank and  QAGOMA  (Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art). Then stroll though the South Bank Parklands and take a dip at  Streets Beach , Australia's only inner city man-made beach. Come sundown, the West End pulses with bars, pubs, cafés and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets: enjoy a craft beer on Boundary Street at  Archive Beer Boutique and Bistro  or the  Brisbane Brewing Co , then try some native Australian food at  Tukka  before heading to one of many live music spots like  Max Watt's . 

Day 6: Feed wild dolphins on Moreton Island

It’s only a 75-minute catamaran ride from Brisbane across Moreton Bay to Moreton Island. The launch departs from the  Holt Street Wharf  in Pinkenba on the Brisbane River. If you're here in winter spend the day whale watching, sand tobogganing or quad biking. If the water is warm, snorkel the reef of shipwrecks near the resort, or simply laze on the beach. Whatever you do, don’t miss the chance to  feed the wild dolphins . Each evening the bottlenose dolphins, varying in numbers from five to 10, swim into the shallow well lit area near  Tangalooma Island Resort  jetty to be hand fed their favourite fish, under the watchful eye of resident rangers. It's an amazing opportunity to get up close and personal to these fascinating animals.  

Day 7: Hit the sand on K’gari

The world's largest sand island, World Heritage-listed  K’gari  (formerly Fraser Island) is a beguiling mix of white sand beaches, dunes, rainforest and freshwater lakes. Ferries to the island depart from Hervey Bay, one of the best whale-watching spots in the world between August and the end of October. You can fly to Hervey Bay  from Brisbane . Alternatively, guests booked to stay at K’gari's  Kingfisher Bay Resort  can jump on a shuttle that departs daily from Brisbane and will deliver you to K’gari in time for sunset cocktails at the hotel's Sunset Bar. Located on the hotel jetty, the bar offers guests the chance to watch the sun slip into the sea, something you can't see from many places on Australia's east coast.

Day 8: Swim in an invisible stream

Explore  K’gari  by 4WD on a  Kingfisher Bay eco tour , winding through lush rainforests, driving along beach highways and bumping along sandy tracks to special spots such as Lake McKenzie, with its picture-perfect azure waters and dazzling white sands. See a rusting shipwreck, towering sand blows and the island's famous coloured sands. Cool off drifting along with the current in Eli Creek, a freshwater rainforest stream with water so clear it's practically invisible.

Day 9: Cruise the Whitsundays

Transfer back to Brisbane and fly north to the Whitsunday Coast.  Airlie Beach  is the place to stay – there are lodgings to suit all budgets and plenty of restaurants and nightlife to keep you entertained. Discovered by Captain Cook on Whit Sunday (the seventh Sunday after Easter) in 1770, the 74 Whitsunday Islands lie between the mainland and the Great Barrier Reef and offer a sailing paradise. Spend the afternoon cooling off in the  free lagoon swimming pool  in the waterfront park at Airlie Beach before enjoying a sunset cruise across the Whitsunday Passage.

Day 10: Escape to Hamilton Island

Getting to  Hamilton Island  is easy – it's just a one-hour ferry ride from Airlie Beach with  Cruise Whitsundays Transfer Service . But leaving Hamilton Island is much harder, because you'll want to stay and play a golf course on its own island, be pampered in a spa, join a jetski tour or follow one of the bushwalking trails. If you’ve only got one day, however, take a sailing tour to  Whitehaven Beach , famous for having fine, white sand that's 98 per cent silica, and take a  scenic flight  over the instantly recognisable Heart Reef. You can organise both tours from your accommodation at the  Reef View Hotel . Have dinner tonight at  Coca Chu , a restaurant offering excellent South East Asian cuisine, after a drink at One Tree Hill , located on top of a hill with a scenic vantage point of the island and its surrounds.

Day 11: Chill out in tropical Cairns

Jump aboard one of the direct flights from Hamilton Island to Cairns, the holiday hub of Queensland's tropical north. Spend the afternoon exploring the city centre on foot – don’t miss the latest travelling exhibition at the  Cairns Regional Gallery  – and stroll the Esplanade and enjoy a dip in the  free swimming lagoon  in the waterfront park, or join the locals strolling though the tropical wonderland of the  Cairns Botanic Gardens , and if you're up for a good workout, follow the Red Arrow Walk up to the top of Mt Whitfield for great views of the city and Trinity Inlet below. Cool down afterwards with a cold drink while being fanned by a sea breeze at the  Pier Bar  followed by dinner with a view at  Salt House .

Day 12: Explore the reef

Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef . The spectacular coral gardens of the outer reef are 90 minutes to two hours away by boat. There are lots of tours to choose from, to suit all budgets, for scuba divers (and those that want to learn), snorkellers, and those who prefer to see it from a semi-submarine or glass bottomed boat. Great Adventures  have trips that include a visit to a pontoon on the outer reef and Green Island,  Seastar  visits the largest of coral cay in the area, Michaelmas Sand Cay, as well as Hastings Reef, and  Wavedancer  will take you to the famous Low Isles - one of the Great Barrier Reef's most spectacular coral cays - in a luxury sailing catamaran. Settle in for the night at the Riley , a stunning five-star luxury hotel with sweeping ocean views. 

Day 13: Have a rainforest adventure

Hire a car – or  join a tour from Cairns  – and follow the winding but very scenic Captain Cook Highway north along the coast into the World Heritage-listed Daintree , the oldest rainforest in the world. Learn about the traditional uses of rainforest plants on a Dreamtime Walk with an Aboriginal guide in  Mossman Gorge , where a clear river tumbles over boulders surrounded by palms and ferns. Then head further north to Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the sea on beautiful Cape Tribulation Beach.

Day 14: Enjoy sky-high views in the Cairns highlands

Finish your 14-day trip on a high note travelling high above the canopy on the  Skyrail Rainforest Cableway , a truly unique way to see the rainforest. It starts near Cairns (a Skyrail coach will pick you up there) and ends at the mountaintop village of Kuranda, famous for its craft markets and the  Australian Butterfly Sanctuary , the largest butterfly aviary in the country. Head back to Cairns via the  Kuranda Scenic Railway , a spectacular journey down the mountain on a historic railway line built in 1882. The thrill will stay with you long after you've boarded your evening flight back to Sydney.

Day 1 Sydney

Arrive at any time.

There's nothing quite like a night out to get people comfortable with one another. Hit up Side Bar, connected to where you will be staying at the Wake Up Hostel in Sydney. This is the liveliest bar around, sporting a huge young and local crowd. There’s always non-stop action with the entertainment so get ready to have a few drinks, let your hair down, and dance until you drop!

Exclusive Inclusions:

Day 2 sydney.

Immerse yourself in all things Sydney with a free day to explore the oldest and biggest Australian city. Glide along the harbour on a ferry and gaze at the white sails of the Opera House gleaming in the sun. Get lost as you wander the narrow, cobbled laneways and take in Sydney’s fabled history. Catch some rays on the sand at Bondi Beach or duck out of your comfort zone and surf the green-barrel breaks just off shore, and perhaps treat yourself to a scenic flyover tour of the city. The choice is yours so get as adventurous as you like in the "Land Down Under"!

Day 3 sydney/arrawarra.

It's all aboard today as you take the train north to Coffs Harbour. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the views. After pulling into Coffs Harbour station, the group will travel to Spot X Surf Camp, our base for the next few days.

Day 4 Arrawarra

As the sun rises along the ocean hit the beach for an included surf lesson with Spot X. Located in one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the country they are completely devoted to the surf lifestyle.

Spend some time in the sun and laughing in the waves with your travel tribe before heading out on a kangaroo trek. Then it’s time for a free afternoon to enjoy your surroundings. Soak up views of Solitary Islands Marine Park, embark on a rockpool scramble to look for fish traps and sea creatures, or wander over to Mullawarra beach for a picnic. Your only real job today is to have fun!

Day 5 Arrawarra/Byron Bay

Adventure through lush national parks, stunning beaches, rolling green hills, and small but vibrant towns full of charm and authentic Australian culture as the group drives from Arrawarra to Byron Bay. Grab lunch in the surf and arts town of Byron Bay, before walking to Cape Byron Lighthouse to see the easternmost point in the country. If luck is on your side you may glimpse migrating whales and pods of resident dolphins.

Day 6 Byron Bay

Welcome to Byron Bay… the city of surfing and sunbathing! The day is yours to explore; walk along hidden beaches, play in the surf, grab a massage. Want to get your adrenaline pumping? Go skydiving, try sea kayaking, or go on a dolphin watch.

Day 7 Byron Bay/Brisbane

Venture north with your group to the capital of Queensland; Brisbane. Pass by national parks, mountains, surfy enclaves, and endless stretches of sand bordering brilliant blue water. Feeling hungry? Grab a delicious pastry creation from the famous Yatala Pie shop, serving hungry patrons for 130 years. Then, stretch those legs one final time on an included walk in the Brisbane Koala Bushlands. Enjoy a beautiful slice of nature on this peaceful walk and do your best to spot Koalas. Although spotting them is hit or miss, this is your best chance to see the cuddly creatures in the wild! Word of advice… make sure those cameras are charged and ready. Experience a night out with the group in Queensland's capital.

Day 8 Brisbane/Noosa

Escape the city as you journey north up the coast to Noosa. Noosa is known for the balmy sunshine, slow beach days, bright blue skies, rolling waves around every corner. Arrive at our hostel for the next three nights and enjoy lunch before heading out to explore all the area has to offer.

Day 9 Noosa to K'gari (Fraser Island)

On your mark...get set.... go! Travel by private vehicle and ferry with your group to reach K'gari (Fraser Island); for a true Aussie experience. K'gari (Fraser Island) is the largest sand island in the world and the only known place where rainforest grows on sand. In the traditional Butchulla language the name of K'Gari means paradise; think striking blue lakes, crystal clear creeks, giant dunes, and dense rainforests in a place truly unlike any other. Once on the island the group will go for a 4x4 tour, driving along over 100km of beach to get a sense of your surroundings. Then take a swim in Lake Mckenzie, or be on the lookout for wild Dingoes (this is one of the few places in Australia where you are able to see them). Return to Noosa later in the afternoon.

Day 10 Noosa

Enjoy a free day in Noosa by taking in the shops along Hasting Street in search of souvenirs, having a coffee on the beach, or a surf in the Ocean. You can also choose to spend time back at the hostel or participate in some of the optional activities offered in the area.

Day 11 Noosa/Airlie Beach

Wake up and get ready to see some of the most beautiful coastline in Australia. This morning the group will hike parts of the Noosa Coastal Track with stunning views across the water and if you look up you may just spot a Koala or two! We will cross secluded beaches before ending up at Hell's Gate. In the afternoon the group will head to the train station to board an overnight train (get ready to post some ‘grams) as the group travels north to Airlie Beach.

Day 12 Airlie Beach/Whitsunday Islands

Awake as the train pulls to a stop in your next destination. Remember those stranded-on-a-deserted island fantasies that we all had growing up? (no just us?) Either way get ready to relive that castaway dream as you hike to an island lookout over Whitehaven Beach (one of the most famous beaches in the world) and enjoy the views of powdery sand and the Coral Sea’s azure waters. You probably won’t ever want to leave. And you haven’t even gone below the surface yet! After some free time on the beach basking in the sun you'll be off to another secluded tropical island spot where the group will anchor for the night.

Day 13 Whitsunday Islands/Airlie Beach

Expected forecast today is; peace, serenity, paradise, and lots of gorgeous views. You may want to pull out your phone or camera every chance you get, but try to refrain and simply enjoy the moment as you and the group continue sailing through the picturesque backdrop of the Whitsunday Islands. Swim, snorkel, or lounge on the boat deck before sailing to the resort town of Airlie Beach for a night on the town with your best adventure buds! Live it up because let’s face it, how often are you really in this kind of paradise?

Day 14 Airlie Beach/Cairns

With an early morning departure, admire the scenery on the bus ride north to Cairns.

Day 15 Cairns

Cairns is quite the place to visit if you love warm weather (it would be headline news for the city’s temperature to drop much below 20°C (68°F)) and want to visit the Great Barrier Reef. Take advantage of a free day to book one of the many optional activities that will get you out in nature’s playground. Snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef, get that adrenaline pumping by whitewater rafting or skydiving and cap it all off on a Big Night Out in Cairns with your fellow travellers. Drinks all around are well deserved after spending the day escaping your comfort zones.

Day 16 Cairns

Byron bay ocean kayaking - from $60.00.

Slice through the waters of the iconic Byron Bay in the morning on this half-day kayaking adventure. Paddle past the most easterly point of the Australian mainland, see the Julian Rocks Marine Reserve, and ride the waves into shore. On top of it all, keep a close eye for dolphins and whales (in season) who call these waters home. Epic? Definitely. This activity is in the ocean and conditions can sometimes be rough due to weather. This is a very fun activity but first time kayakers may find this challenging.

Great Barrier Reef Snorkelling - From $168.00

You haven't truly visited Australia until you've experienced the Great Barrier Reef. The 2,800 km road trip from Cairns to Sydney takes at least 28 hours to drive. Key coastal stops include Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Brisbane, Byron Bay and Port Macquarie; or Dubbo, Emerald and Blue Mountains National Park if you take our Inland Route.

This awesome road trip will let you follow some of Australia's most beautiful coastline or, alternatively, its hidden rural inland treasures. Keep reading to find out the best routes, places to visit and time of year to make this fantastic journey.

How far is Sydney from Cairns, and how long will the road trip take?

When it comes to charting a path between Cairns and Sydney, two great route options stand out as head and shoulders above the rest.

The shorter of our two recommended routes follows the beautiful coastline between Cairns and Sydney and covers a distance of 2,800 kilometres. This route will take 32 hours to drive, not accounting for stops along the way.

On the Coastal Route there are plenty of beachside towns and cities where you can stop and refresh yourself with views of the ocean or even a quick paddle. The route itself is incredibly straightforward, giving you plenty of opportunity to make short detours as your schedule allows.

We suggest that you take your time to explore some of the less-visited coastal areas on this fantastic route. There are simply too many to list here, but often some of the best memories come from just turning off the highway to see what views await you!

For a more rugged, inland adventure, you might prefer to take our Inland Route, which comes in at 2,510 kilometres and can be completed in 28 hours.

Neither of these road trip routes can be completed quickly: this is more of a scenic and outdoor adventure trip that needs at least six days dedicated to it. As a guide, we'd suggest spending seven on the trip, but you could easily spend more and discover more of the region.

Best road trip route from Cairns to Sydney

There's no particular 'best' route for this trip, instead, you should definitely pick the option that appeals most to you.

The Coastal Route can be as relaxed or as active as you make it. But whichever pace you choose, you are guaranteed stunning ocean views, white sand beaches, and some laid-back cities and towns where you can sit back and relax.

The Inland Route lets you discover Aboriginal heritage and get a feel for the realities faced by the first European settlers when they built a new life here all those years ago.

The Coastal Route

This route hugs the east coast of Australia for over 2,000 kilometres, so you'll have plenty of beaches to explore along the way.

When it comes to navigation, this route couldn't be much more straightforward, as it follows the Pacific Highway (otherwise known as the A1) along the coast for the entirety of the trip.

You will begin your journey from Cairns by taking the A1 south out of the city, passing Bentley Park and Edmonton as you leave the suburban area.

Continue south, following the Pacific Highway past Innisfail, until you reach Mission Beach. Here, you can enjoy some of the most pristine sands around and plenty of beachside dining options. At a couple of hours into your trip, this is a perfect place to stop for a bite to eat.

Almost three hours further down the Pacific Highway is Townsville, where you can enjoy the popular Strand esplanade and stretch your legs before returning to your car.

If you're looking for an overnight stop, however, we'd recommend waiting until you reach Airlie Beach, which is known as the Gateway to the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. Stop at Airlie Beach (taking State Route 59) to enjoy a huge variety of Reef activities while recharging yourselves for the journey ahead.

From Airlie Beach, rejoin the Pacific Highway, continuing for just over 500 kilometres to Rockhamtpon, with an optional detour to the coastal town and sheltered enclave of Yeppoon.

A great alternative to Yeppoon - 45 minutes off the Pacific Highway, past Miriam Vale - is the town of Seventeen Seventy. Park up here for unspoilt beaches and great fishing.

Two other short detours from the main route (before you hit Brisbane and its metropolitan buzz) take you to Hervey Bay and Noosa Heads. Make sure you take a look at our list of "Things to see" below to identify which of these coastal hotspots you want to prioritise on your trip.

After spending some time in Brisbane, make your way further along the Pacific Highway, moving past the Gold Coast and on to world-famous Byron Bay.

Just over 100 kilometres south of Byron Bay, you'll pass Bundjalung National Park, which is a natural place to stop and enjoy a quieter, more relaxed pace after busy Byron Bay.

From here, resume your A1 journey for another hour and a half to Coffs Harbour where, if the season is right, you can enjoy whale-watching as you recharge for your onward travels to Nambucca Heads and Port Macquarie.

At just over 4 hours from Sydney, historic Port Macquarie is a great option for a final stop before you reach Sydney. On this last leg of your journey, return to the Pacific Highway once more, passing Myall Lakes National Park and Newcastle before enjoying some well-earned downtime at your destination.

Unless you dislike the feel of sand beneath your feet, it's hard to highlight a drawback except that this is the longer of the two routes.

The Inland Route

This route starts out on the Queensland coast, before swinging inland from Townsville. You'll spend most of the route driving through wide open farmland, small towns and stunning outback landscapes, passing near some national parks too.

Life feels really different here compared to the cities, and you'll get a real sense of that on your drive. You'll finish the route through Australia's Mudgee Wine region before entering Sydney.

This route starts in the same way as the Coastal Route, until you reach Townsville. Once there, take the A6 southwest towards Woodstock, then following the road a further 100 kilometres to Charters Towers City and Mosman Park.

Upon exiting Mosman Park, join the A7 heading south towards Emerald. On your way, you'll pass Nairana National Park Homestead and Blair Athol State Forest.

As you'll see below, we recommend Emerald as a great stopover point on your road trip to Sydney on the Inland Route. On leaving the town, you'll want to take the Gregory Highway towards Springsure, before navigating towards Rolleston on the Dawson Highway.

At Rolleston, take the Carnarvon Highway south, past the beautiful Carnarvon National Park: a lush wilderness, full of amazing opportunities for hiking and camping adventures..

An hour south of Injune (our recommended access point to Carnarvon National Park) on the Carnarvon Highway, you'll arrive at Roma. Here, take the A55 towards St George. Once you pass St George and cross from Queensland into New South Wales, the A55 becomes the B55, and you will remain on this road for around 370 kilometres until you reach Gilgandra.

At Gilgandra, take the Newell Highway (A39) to the town of Dubbo. Dubbo, known for its outstanding Western Plains Zoo and rich historical heritage, is a great place to stop and break up this long journey. Consider taking the City Heritage Walk to get a great feel for the place.

Once you leave Dubbo, continue on the B55 for around 245 kilometres until you reach signs for Bathurst and the Great Western Way (A32). From this point onwards, you are on the final stretch of your trip.

The Great Western Way loops around the Blue Mountains National Park, passing through Katoomba on the approach to Sydney. You'll find that the road merges into M4 as you make your way into the Sydney metropolitan area and ready yourself for a well-earned break in the city.

Although this is the quicker route, you'll find fewer stellar attractions on this drive, and you'll need to be prepared for some long stretches of driving, so factor in some rest stops to help keep you focused on the road. Keep stocked up on fuel, drinks and snacks when you get the opportunity, too.

Best places to stop between Cairns and Sydney

Due the driving distances, you'll definitely need to make at least three overnight stops on your road trip from Cairns to Sydney. We recommend taking at least a week to do this trip justice, and we've chosen two of our favourite stops - one on either route - to help you begin planning this trip of a lifetime.

And whilst the views between Cairns and Sydney are second to none, some carefully chosen accommodation will really elevate your trip to another level.

Overnight stop in Airlie Beach

Located on our Coastal Route, around 7 hours 30 minutes from Cairns, Airlie Beach is an excellent choice for a stopover en route to Sydney.

As well as being a stunning beachside stopover, Airlie Beach is known as Gateway to the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsunday Islands.

From here, you can take a sailing trip out to the stunning Whitsunday Islands, snorkel or scuba dive along the Great Barrier Reef - or simply cool off in the pools at Airlie Beach Lagoon, which is free to enter and offers beautiful views out to sea

For the slightly more energetic traveller, this is also a fantastic spot for some gentle hiking. Hike up to Honeyeater Lookout, a moderate 8 kilometre walk with amazing views.

While here, we recommend the Airlie Beach Hotel, with its beachfront location with fabulous views. Grab your morning coffee and watch the sun rise over the ocean if you're an early bird. There's no better place for it!

The hotel's staff can arrange tours to help you make the most of Airlie Beach's gateway location. Alternatively, head to nearby Abel Point Marina for trips out on the ocean.

With a great choice of cafes, restaurants and bars in walking distance - and free parking on site - this hotel is hard to beat in terms of convenience, amenities and location.

Overnight stop in Emerald, Queensland

Located in Queensland's Central Highlands Region, Emerald is 950 kilometres (10 hour 30 minutes) from Cairns, via the Inland Route.

Emerald is famed for its agricultural heritage, and most notably its sunflower production. Be sure to check out the world's biggest Van Gogh Sunflower painting (located in the town's Moreton Park) which is a testament to this legacy.

Emerald is also home to Central Queensland Highlands Visitor Information Center, so it's a great place to stop and find out more if you're planning on exploring this region in more depth. As its name suggests, Emerald was historically a coal and gem mining town.

History aside, Emerald also boasts plenty of natural scenery to enjoy as you take a break from the road. The Nogoa River runs through Emerald Botanic Gardens, which is a perfect place to spend a peaceful afternoon. Nearby Lake Maraboon is also popular for swimming, fishing and watersports.

And for those happy to venture a little further afield, you can take the Gemfields Interpretive Trail through the surrounding countryside. There's also the International Coal Centre at Blackwater as well as Capella Pioneer Village to awaken your inner history buff.

For a comfortable night's stay in Emerald, we recommend the Midlander Motor Inn . Its lovely outdoor pool is perfect to cool down in after a long day on the road, and most of the Inn's bright and spacious rooms have a small outdoor terrace.

Many of the Inn's rooms also have a kitchenette if you want to take a break from restaurant meals. But if you'd rather skip the cooking and explore the local area, the Midlander Motor Inn is very centrally located with all main attractions in walking distance. And as an added bonus, there's free private parking on site.

Where to stay when you reach Sydney

With so many options on offer, you may be feeling a little overwhelmed when it comes to choosing where to stay in Sydney. For us, though, The Fullerton Hotel makes this decision simple .

Things to see on a road trip from Cairns to Sydney

There are so many incredible things to see on a road trip from Cairns to Sydney that you really need a good few weeks to see them all.

However if you are pressed for time, here are some of the main highlights you should check out first.

  • Whitsunday Islands - To get your coastal road trip off to a stunning start, these beautiful islands offer a tropical getaway, with white sands, coral reefs, and plenty of places to swim, snorkel or scuba dive.
  • Yeppoon - This quaint little town by the sea is a nice place to break your journey, and also the gateway to Great Keppel Island.
  • Seventeen Seventy - In 1770, Lt James Cook landed here: the first European to set foot in the place later named Queensland. These days it's known for its amazing beaches and coastal views.
  • Noosa Heads - You'll find something for everyone here. Relax on the beach, ride the waves at Noosa World Surfing Reserve, or hike through Noosa National Park.
  • Brisbane - As you'd expect, Queensland's capital city has more stunning beaches to enjoy, but you can also visit the beautiful botanical gardens or relax on a river cruise.
  • Byron Bay - One of the most famous destinations on Australia's east coast, Byron Bay has a distinctly relaxed vibe and fabulous surf. Head up to the lighthouse before sunrise – it's one of the first places in Australia to see the new day.
  • Bundjalung National Park - This protected coastal plain is a great place to canoe and mountain bike, or just enjoy the hike along Ten Mile Beach.
  • Coffs Harbour - Known for its Big Banana statue and amusement park, you can sometimes see whales from the viewing platform on Muttonbird Island if you visit in winter.
  • Port Macquarie - This town has one of the region's highest koala populations, but if you don't see one in the wild, just head to Billabong Zoo where you can meet one close-up.
  • Crowdy Bay National Park - Make an early start at this great national park to watch the sun rise while kangaroos swim in the ocean.
  • Hunter Valley - If time allows, take a detour inland from Newcastle to enjoy the famous Hunter Valley wine region.

  • Townsville - Dive down to the fascinating Underwater Museum of Art (you'll need to scuba dive to see some of the exhibits) or head out of town to visit the rainforests of Paluma Range National Park.
  • Blair Athol State Forest - Queensland's gold rush has been bringing prospectors here since 1861, and as well as hiking through the stunning forest landscape, you can still fossick for gold here.
  • The Gemfields - Follow the trail through Sapphire, Emerald and Rubyfields, where settlers once travelled in search of gems they hoped would make their fortunes.
  • Carnarvon National Park - Centered on the impressive Carnarvon Gorge, this national park is a great place to escape the highway, with hikes through unspoilt countryside, where you can also see Aboriginal art on the sandstone.
  • Dubbo - Home to Taronga Western Plains Zoo, you can get up close with all sorts of Australian wildlife here. For a glimpse of the different sides of outback life in years gone by, head to Dundullimal Homestead or Dubbo Old Gaol.
  • Mudgee Wineries - Explore the vineyards and cellar doors of this small but special wine region just off the Castlereagh Highway.
  • Blue Mountains National Park - Just outside Sydney, hike or mountain bike through canyons and past waterfalls, then cool off at river swimming spots before taking in the famous view of the Three Sisters.

Best time to go on a road trip from Cairns to Sydney

The road trip route from Cairns to Sydney is one that you can drive all year round, as the entirety of this area stays mild even through winter.

Depending on what you're looking for, however, there are certain times of year you might like to avoid when planning your trip.

Summer in Sydney is hot, with temperatures usually sitting in the high 20s Celsius but often soaring much higher for days at a time. Summer is also the rainy season in the east of Australia, and it sometimes sees box jellyfish congregating off the coast in huge numbers, so if you're planning on spending lots of time outdoors, you might prefer another season.

By comparison, you'll find that the Inland Route is drier - but also hotter - with average daytime temperatures exceeding 30 degrees during summer.

If you choose to travel in summer, you could get to take in Sydney's fabulous Mardi Gras if you plan your trip for February.

If your preference is for milder conditions, the east coast experiences very temperate winters, with temperatures usually ranging from 8 to 18 degrees in Sydney.

However, the weather can be overcast and changeable, so although hardy souls might still enjoy a dip in the ocean, you won't see the sparkling blue water at its best through winter!

Inland, temperatures are similar but can dip down close to freezing at night, so pack warm clothes if this is when you're travelling.

With temperatures in the mid to high 20s Celsius in both spring and autumn, both seasons are ideal for enjoying the many beaches you'll pass by on the Coastal Route. Detour inland from Newcastle to see the wonderful grape harvest in the Hunter Valley in autumn.

There are no planned activities during the day, so check into the hotel and explore the city. If you arrive early enough, head down to the harbour's edge to 'The Rocks' historic area.

Immerse yourself in all things Sydney with a free day to explore the oldest and biggest Australian city. Glide along the harbour on a ferry and gaze at the white sails of the Opera House gleaming in the sun. Get lost as you wander the narrow, cobbled laneways and take in Sydney’s fabled history. Catch some rays on the sand at Bondi Beach or duck out of your comfort zone and surf the green-barrel breaks just off shore, and perhaps treat yourself to a scenic flyover tour of the city. The choice is yours so get as adventurous as you like in the "Land Down Under"!

Sydney/Arrawarra

It's all aboard today as you take the train north to Coffs Harbour. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the views. After pulling into Coffs Harbour station, the group will travel to Spot X Surf Camp, our base for the next few days.

As the sun rises along the ocean hit the beach for an included surf lesson with Spot X. Located in one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the country they are completely devoted to the surf lifestyle. Spend some time in the sun and laughing in the waves with your travel tribe before heading out on a kangaroo trek. Then it’s time for a free afternoon to enjoy your surroundings. Soak up views of Solitary Islands Marine Park, embark on a rockpool scramble to look for fish traps and sea creatures, or wander over to Mullawarra beach for a picnic. Your only real job today is to have fun!

Arrawarra/Byron Bay

Travel the coastal road to the stunning surf and arts town of Byron Bay. Enjoy plenty of free time to experience the hippie surfing town.

At the end of it all hop on that surfboard for one last ride because as the locals say, “You haven’t surfed until you’ve surfed Byron Man!" Opt to pre-book the "Byron Bay Ocean Kayaking" activity on the checkout page ahead of time, to include this optional on your tour.

Byron Bay/Brisbane

Venture north with your group to the capital of Queensland; Brisbane. Pass by national parks, mountains, surfy enclaves, and endless stretches of sand bordering brilliant blue water. Feeling hungry? Grab a delicious pastry creation from the famous Yatala Pie shop, serving hungry patrons for 130 years. Then, stretch those legs one final time on an included walk in the Brisbane Koala Bushlands. Enjoy a beautiful slice of nature on this peaceful walk and do your best to spot Koalas. Although spotting them is hit or miss, this is your best chance to see the cuddly creatures in the wild! Word of advice… make sure those cameras are charged and ready. Experience a night out with the group in Queensland's capital.

Brisbane/Noosa

Escape the city as you journey north up the coast to Noosa. Noosa is known for the balmy sunshine, slow beach days, bright blue skies, rolling waves around every corner. Arrive at our hostel for the next three nights and enjoy lunch before heading out to explore all the area has to offer.

Noosa to K'gari (Fraser Island)

Once on the island, enjoy a 4x4 tour of K'gari (Fraser Island), driving along over 100km of beach. Go for a swim in Lake McKenzie, and enjoy a rainforest walk along the way.

Enjoy a free day in Noosa by taking in the shops along Hasting Street in search of souvenirs, having a coffee on the beach, or a surf in the Ocean. You can also choose to spend time back at the hostel or participate in some of the optional activities offered in the area.

Noosa/Airlie Beach

Wake up and get ready to see some of the most beautiful coastline in Australia. This morning the group will hike parts of the Noosa Coastal Track with stunning views across the water and if you look up you may just spot a Koala or two! We will cross secluded beaches before ending up at Hell's Gate. In the afternoon the group will head to the train station to board an overnight train (get ready to post some ‘grams) as the group travels north to Airlie Beach.

Airlie Beach/Whitsunday Islands

Cairns (via Tully and Townsville) — Magnetic Island

MEET: at Nomads Cairns, Gilligans or Cairns train station (please confirm prior to departure). We travel by train south to Townsville, getting in around mid-afternoon and then take the ferry out to tropical ‘Maggie Island’. There is much to explore on the island, as nearly 50% of it is National Park with amazing beaches and abundant wildlife. SLEEP: YHA Bungalow Bay or your choice of Magnetic Island accom.

Magnetic Island (via Townsville) – Airlie Beach MEET: at YHA Bungalow Bay reception or at the ferry terminal (please confirm). In the morning your guide will join you on the Forts walk, otherwise you can do some exploring, check out the local wildlife park or just relax by the pool.  In the afternoon we travel back to the mainland on the ferry, then jump on the train to Proserpine, with a transfer to Airlie Beach arriving approx. 7pm. Note: Depending on which day you depart, you may have a free day to spend on Magnetic Island. SLEEP:  Your choice of Airlie accom, you can book via the Loka web app.

Free Day in Airlie Beach

We have a full day in Airlie Beach for activities or to relax. There are great 1-3 day sailing adventure options around the Whitsunday Islands that you can do.

Airlie Beach – Emu Park  (Special Stop)

MEET: outside Base backpackers.

We have most of the day free in Airlie and then in the early evening we transfer to the train and travel to Rockhampton. We hop off the train with a quick transfer to the cool, coastal town of Emu Park. We have organized a great package here that’s $75 for 2 nights accommodation at Emu Resort and an Aussie farm experience that includes a ‘swagman’s’ dinner (and a tour around the property).  While at Emu Park you can sit around the resort pool or go on a turtle-spotting walk up to Bluff Point. Note: Depending on the day you arrive you may have an additional night to sleep in swags at the Country Campout. This is an extra $34 for camping experience and breakfast.

SLEEP:  Emu Park $75 for the 2 night package or $109 for the 3 night package (no need to pre-book). These packages are $60 and $90 for no meals or Country Campout experience included.

Emu Park – Rainbow Beach 

MEET: at Emus Beach reception We begin the day with an early morning bus transfer to the train. We travel to Gympie then jump on the Loka bus to Rainbow Beach.  Rainbow Beach is a departure point for Fraser Island and has a beautiful beach to chill on, or we recommend walking up to Carlo Sand Blow with your guide for sunset or sunrise.

SLEEP:  Your choice of Rainbow Beach accom. You can book this via the Loka web app.

Rainbow Beach (via Noosa, Brisbane & Gold Coast) — Byron Bay 

MEET: across the road from Frasers on Rainbow/Dingos hostels.

We travel in our own Loka bus through Noosa, Brisbane and Gold Coast, with pick-ups and drop offs.  We stop for a walk at the Queensland/NSW border crossing at Danger Point to stretch our legs, and check out the view of one of Australia’s best surf spots Snapper Rock, before heading onto our night stop at Australia’s coolest surf town, Byron Bay.

SLEEP: Your choice of Byron Bay accom.  You can book this via the Loka web app.

Free Day in Byron Bay

Explore, learn to surf, party or relax and take in the laidback, hippy vibe.  We recommend taking a walk to the lighthouse to view the Australian mainland’s most easterly point.

Byron Bay (via Spot X) – Sydney  MEET: at the main bus stop on Jonson St or Arts Factory hostel (please confirm).

We travel to Sydney via Spot X Surf Camp. Hop off if you want to learn to surf or just hang by the beach. We then express down to Sydney getting in early evening with drop offs to selected Sydney central hostels.

SLEEP: Your choice of Sydney accom.  We drop off outside Wake Up (by Central Station) and Nomads.

Note:  Food and accommodation are not included in your Loka pass. You can break your journey at any of the stops through any of the travel days and just connect with a later Loka bus or rail departure (guided or unguided).

Passes are valid for 12 months from the date of your departure. Travel is in Loka’s 24 seat mini coaches between Sydney and Noosa/Rainbow Beach (Cooroy train station), and local bus and train (plus ferry to Magnetic Island) between Noosa/Rainbow Beach and Cairns. Loka’s guides travel on all routes on the set departure days – but you can travel on the train on other days without a guide.

Easter Break, Part II – Trip to Sydney!

G’Day Everyone!

I flew straight from Cairns to Sydney for the second half of the week.  We arrived at the airport in Sydney, it was about 11pm, so I head straight to my hotel and went to bed.

On Thursday morning, I headed towards the city to a shuttle bus pickup location. Here I got picked up for a tour of the Blue Mountains. This was an all-day tour I had scheduled beforehand. Our first stop on the tour was the Sydney Zoo. We got to the zoo about an hour before it opened, so our tour group had the whole place to ourselves. I got to go into the koala sanctuary and take a picture with Nelson the koala. Unfortunately, he was asleep, so I didn’t get to hold him and had to be very quiet not to wake him. After the zoo, our bus departed towards the Blue Mountains. Along the way, we learned a handful of random trivia from our tour guide/bus driver, Les, who was hilarious and made the tour very exciting.

When we got to the Blue Mountains, everything was fogged over. We were supposed to take cable cars through the canyons and see a bunch of waterfalls and landmarks, but nothing was visible through the fog. We hiked down at one spot that was a little clearer and were able to see a waterfall. Other than that, Les took us to about 12 different spots and not one had any visibility. We called it a day after a few hours of trying and headed on back. It was still a fun tour despite not getting the full Blue Mountain experience.

On Friday, it was pouring in Sydney. I decided to take the train into town and try to explore some landmarks that were indoors. I went to Market City, a decent sized mall with a few floors of stores and then a market on the ground floor. After that, I wandered to the Queen Victoria Building. That was a very beautiful building. By this point, I was soaking wet, so I headed on back to my hotel and called it a night.

On Saturday morning, the sun came out just in time for me to see some sights before my flight that afternoon. I got up and took a ferry around the bay. I got to see the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge from the water.

The ferry docked at Circular Quay, where I walked to a place called the Rocks Markets. Tents and food trucks lined the streets for blocks. I wandered around for a bit and got some lunch, then caught a bus to Bondi Beach. I walked through some shops at Bondi, got some gelato, then sat in the grass by the beach for a bit. I didn’t have much time before I had to catch a train to the airport. I reached the airport and flew back to Melbourne as my break came to an end.

Midnight Oil announce final dates of farewell tour in Sydney and Melbourne

The band will perform 1982 album '10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1' in its entirety at two shows next month

Midnight Oil have announced four new shows in Sydney and Melbourne, marking the last dates to be added to the final stretch of their  farewell tour .

Two of the newly added shows will see the band perform their fourth studio album, 1982’s ’10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1′, in full, nearly 40 years after it was released. The band had originally announced plans for the special show – a Melbourne-exclusive benefit to raise funds for environmental causes – in March, but were forced to cancel due to health issues being faced by drummer Rob Hirst.

Instead, the band will celebrate the album – which featured hits like ‘Power And The Passion’, ‘US Forces’ and ‘Read About It’ – at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre on September 12, and at Luna Park’s Big Top in Sydney on September 28.

Midnight Oil have also announced a pair of shows that will feature extended sets drawing from every album and EP across the band’s lengthy career. Those will take place at the Palais Theatre on September 14, and at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on October 3. The latter show will be the last on Midnight Oil’s ‘Resist’ tour, thus bringing an end to the band’s touring career.

Tickets for all four of the new shows go on sale next Monday (August 22) at 10am local time, with pre-sales for Frontier Touring members and those signed up to Midnight Oil’s mailing list kicking off this Thursday (August 18). A portion of proceeds from all ticket sales will be donated to environmental and Indigenous causes.

“We’ve always supported causes that we believe are important during our tours so these four extra gigs are partly a way of doing that,” Garrett explained in a statement. “They will allow the band and the audience to have a different experience each night by digging deep into the back catalogue in venues that are a bit smaller than the ones we’ve usually been playing in over recent years.”

Hirst added that the new shows are Midnight Oil’s way of acknowledging the “connection over 45 years” between the band and their fans. “We’ve all shared an amazing journey together, so we want to celebrate that by playing something for everyone in places that feel special.”

The final leg of Midnight Oil’s tour will kick off this week at the Mundi Mundi Bash in Broken Hill. Rescheduled gigs are set to take place in Cairns, Darwin, Busselton, Swan Valley and Canberra, along with a performance at Stompem Ground festival in Broome. Tickets for the Busselton gig will go on sale at the same time as the four new shows, while tickets for the other shows are on sale now.

Every year, Australians gather around the country to commemorate all defence personnel who have served and sacrificed their lives in armed conflicts.

This year’s Anzac Day commemoration will mark 110 years since World War 1 began on July 28, 1914.

Each state and territory marks the day by holding Dawn Services, sunset services and marches through their respective major cities.

Here is a complete rundown of all the major events taking place in Sydney this week.

WHAT IS ANZAC DAY AND WHY IS IT CELEBRATED?

Anzac Day is a day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that commemorates all service members in the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, otherwise known by the acronym ANZAC.

It is meant to commemorate the anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli in Turkey on April 25, 1915.

WHAT HAPPENS IN SYDNEY FOR ANZAC DAY?

Commemorative services are held across Sydney, with the main Dawn Service centring on Martin Place and the Cenotaph memorial.

Later in the morning at 9am, the traditional Anzac Day march takes place between Martin Place and Hyde Park, with streets lined by people paying tribute to the Diggers. The march will finish at Liverpool St at 12:30pm.

Once the march has taken place, a commemorative service will be held at the Pool of Remembrance at the ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park at 12:30pm.

The day concludes with a sunset service at the Cenotaph in Martin Place at 5pm.

WHAT TIME IS THE DAWN SERVICE IN SYDNEY FOR ANZAC DAY?

The dawn service will begin at 4:15am in Martin Place and the Cenotaph memorial. Audiences are able to stand on George St and watch the proceedings unfold on setup TV screens, as the area fills up quickly around 3-3:30am.

ARE SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS OPEN FOR ANZAC DAY?

Supermarkets: All Coles and Woolworths stores will open after 1pm, with individual ALDI stores offering various opening hours.

Bottle shops: All Liquorland stores will be open with reduced trading hours excluding Liquorland West Gosford, while all Dan Murphy stores will open at 1:15pm. The majority of BWS stores will trade from 1pm.

Clothing/goods shops: Big W will open with reduced hours, while most Kmart stores will open after 1:30pm. Shoppers can also visit Bunnings and Westfield locations from 1pm.

WHY ARE POPPIES A SYMBOL OF ANZAC DAY ?

The red poppy holds symbolic significance for Anzac Day, as they were among the first to flower in the battlefields of Belgium and northern France in World War 1.

Many people also wear a sprig of Rosemary, which is a herb that grows on the Turkish peninsula in Gallipoli. It’s also a symbol of fidelity and remembrance.

WILL PUBLIC TRANSPORT BE RUNNING ON ANZAC DAY?

According to Transport NSW, any participants or spectators are encouraged to plan ahead and leave their car at home as many major roads will be closed with parking restrictions in effect for most of the day.

Public transport travel will be free for veterans and their families, with additional early morning public transport services running within walking distance of The Dawn Service and the march.

Trains: Additional early morning trains will run from 2:36am on suburban lines and from 12:37am on NSW TrainLink Intercity lines.

The closest station to the Dawn Service is Martin Place on the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line. Catch a train to Town Hall and change for a service to Martin Place leaving from Platform 5. Alternatively, catch a train to Wynyard and walk to Martin Place.

The closest stations to the March along Elizabeth Street are Martin Place, St James and Town Hall stations. After the March finishes at 1pm, trains will run to a regular Sunday timetable to get you back home.

Buses: Buses will run to a public holiday timetable with additional early-morning services starting from 2.30am on key routes into the city from the Northern Beaches, Lower North Shore, Inner West, Hills District, Lane Cove, Macquarie Park, Eastern Suburbs and Victoria Road.

Buses will be missing stops along and surrounding Martin Place and Elizabeth Street while roads are closed. You will need to walk further than usual to access the Dawn Service and March viewing areas.

Buses in the Sydney CBD will be diverting from their regular routes and using different stops while roads are closed between 5.30am and 4pm on Anzac Day

Ferries: Sydney Ferries will run to a public holiday timetable. Ferry services to Circular Quay don’t run early in the morning on public holidays so you will need to catch a train or bus to get to the Dawn Service instead.

If you plan to catch a ferry to the city for the March, change at Circular Quay for trains to Town Hall, St James or Museum, or change for a light rail service to Town Hall to get within walking distance of Elizabeth Street.

WILL THE ANZAC DAY DAWN SERVICE BE TELEVISED?

The ABC will host broadcast coverage of Anzac Day services and events on April 25th.

The Sydney Dawn Service will be broadcast on ABC TV and ABC NEWS channel and on ABC radio from 4:20am, followed by the Canberra Dawn Service at 5:30am.

The Sydney March will be broadcast on ABC TV and ABC iview from 9am.
