Tim and I had an amazing time on our Detours trip to Costa Rica. This was our first time on an all-male trip, so we did not know what to expect. We have already registered for our second trip with Detours, so you know where this review is going. Everything leading up to the trip was handled with professionalism and ease by Detours. That same vibe continued once the trip started. Brandon, our trip leader, was high-energy, fun, kind, inclusive, organized, connected, and on top of his game. He did not miss a beat, all details were attended to, and he made the trip enjoyable for all. Clay was equally kind and fun, and we look forward to one of his guided trips in the future. Costa Rica is a beautiful country. We loved the variety of our locations (the beach, the mountains, the hot springs / Volcano). A little bit of everything was perfect. We participated in so many unforgettable activities (ziplining, Tarzan swing, ATV, white-water rafting, canyoneering, sunset cruises, beaches, waterfalls, pool parties, park tours, . . . ) that filled our days and brought us even closer to the group of guys we traveled with. The beauty is you get to choose your own adventure. Do it all, or do nothing, no pressure. If that is not enough, you get to experience it all with a diverse group of men from across the globe. The friendships and connections we made were easy even for introverts and heightened our positive experiences. We hope to continue these friendships in our future travels. If you are on the fence, get off. A Detours experience is worth it. Enjoy your trip!

We are so grateful that we found Detours online when looking for travel options. We recently took a tour through Italy and it felt like first class all the way but for a very reasonable price. Everyone from the initial communication with Maurice in the office who handled our bookings and questions to our interactions with our tour leaders Scott and Miles was top notch. They even helped arrange a last minute cooking class for us which was above and beyond. We look forward to a future trip with Detours as it was not only the best service ever but felt like it was with family the whole time.

It’s hard to find almost any business that “gets you” these days. Travel has changed so much in the past few years so it’s a big investment of time, money and expectation when you book a trip. I’ve just completed my 5th tour with Detours and I can’t say enough great things about them. This is a business built from the ground up with a passion for fun, adventure, comfort and value foremost in mind. All the tour leaders with Detours are reflections of the qualities the owner envisions. They’re all about YOU! They know what they’re doing and have never let me down or fallen short of providing an unforgettable experience. If you haven’t yet, book a tour with them and be ready to be amazed at what they do.

Choosing Detours Travel was the best decision I have very made seriously, without a doubt the best vacation I have ever had!!!!! I have never traveled with a group of 16 Gay Men of various backgrounds, interests; to be very honest this was an "out of the box" moment for me which caused much anxiety going in. From the moment I arrived in Athens a day early I reached out via What's App to see who was in town, hooked up with 3 guys in a few hours and the adventure began. Our Leader Brandon who was in contact with us as soon as we began the adventure and continued to check on all the group several times either in person or on line, everyday this man is on top of everything! He instantly wins everyone over with his amazing energetic, positive, humorous, welcoming, kind, warm, personality he knows his business inside and out nothing stumps him he always comes thru even after hours. What a beyond excellent representative for Detours Travel Bravo Brandon!!!!! The trip every detail looked after amazing transfers, hotels, restaurants, scheduled and extra tours offered ( no hard sell just suggestions you may want to pursue or not ) Any of my friends knows I am a tough demanding customer with high standards. I can honestly say all were met no complaints whatsoever ever I would go on another Detours adventure for sure maybe only travel this way from now on Two more things I will share: 1/ I had a little incident with an ATV vehicle no injury to me whatsoever Brandon managed me and was the go between with vendor keeping me informed with calming grace and figuring all out. 2/ before reaching our last destination Brandon shared there was problem with my room but assured me it would be handled as it was; when we reached hotel the management was amazing laid out the options which I agreed to - Amazing Property & Service. That is it...... having a tough time..... without Detours & Brandon getting thru may days without their guidance Cheers to you all,

I rarely write reviews but I simply had to write one for Detours after returning from their Italy trip. Honestly, the way I found Detours is that I searched for “Gay tour Italy”. And while there were a number of tour groups offering trips to Italy, Detours had a trip that was closest to the dates I wanted to travel. So I booked the trip and hoped for the best! But I didn’t need to worry, and you won’t need to worry either if you book with them. My trip leaders ended up being Miles & Ollie and they were both knowledgeable, professional, helpful, friendly, entertaining, and adorable. They thought of every detail and even included some surprises along the way. I met some great people and made memories that will last a lifetime. I was genuinely sad when it was over. This trip actually meant a lot to me and thanks to Detours, it was everything I had hoped for and more. I can’t imagine booking with anyone else in the future. Now I just need to decide where to go next!

As a solo traveller I was a little worried about going on a group trip.  I saw all the other positive reviews and booked. Well there is a reason why the reviews are all 5 stars, I had the most amazing trip to Greece. I felt so relaxed right from the start after meeting all the other guys and our tour guide Oliver. The next 12 days was like having a holiday with all your friends and as a group we got to see and do so many fabulous things together. Oliver was our guide and how lucky were we to have him. He just did everything for us from booking taxis, restaurants, tours and putting information into our group chat so we always new exactly what was happening. He would even put a link in there to find our way back to our hotel after a couple to many drinks which was needed a few times. Detours is 5 star from the moment you make contact with them and continue even after your tour is finished. I just recommend them so much if you are looking to have that trip of a lifetime that you will never forget. I can’t wait for my next adventure with them.

Wonderfully run tours for gay men. I took their 12 day tour of Spain which included Barcelona, Granada, Sevilla and Madrid. I enjoyed their helpful yet flexible format so much I'm planning my next tour with them. Unlike other group tours, you're not stuck on a bus and forced into their schedule. You can go with the group to popular locations or you can spend time on your own, or both! It's really the best of both worlds, having a reliable tour leader to take you to see the sites--as well as having all the free time you want to explore on your own. There's a walking tour of each city, and a list of the most popular sites. You choose what you want to do, and the tour leader creates a schedule so your interests don't conflict. You go to big attractions, like Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, as a group because they've arranged for tickets in advance (without which you can't get in). Our group leader, Dan, was always helpful, organized, kind, cheerful, always calm, and funny. He made sure we got to see what we wanted to see, either as a group or individually. The 14 gay guys on the trip were all good-natured and easy to get along with. As well as having a great format, Detours is also an excellent value as travel gets more expensive. You stay at lovely, centrally located hotels, with a buffet breakfast included to keep you going all day. The group meets for dinner which you can attend or not, as always, it's your choice. Transportation between cities on the tour are also included. It's a low stress, great fun way to discover the world with like-minded people.

The 12-day tour of New Zealand was an absolute adventure from start to finish! Exploring Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, and Queenstown provided a diverse and captivating experience that left us in awe of this beautiful country. Highlights included ascending the Sky Tower in Auckland, where the panoramic views took our breath away. The wine tour on Waiheke Island introduced us to some of the finest local wines in a picturesque setting. Hobbiton was a dream come true for any Lord of the Rings fan, with its charming hobbit holes and lush landscapes. The thrill of Zorbing in Rotorua was unlike anything we've ever experienced, adding an exciting twist to our journey. And who could forget the majestic beauty of Milford Sound? Flying back from Milford Sound to Queenstown on a Cessna plane was an unforgettable highlight, offering unparalleled views of the stunning fjords and rugged landscapes below. Throughout the trip, our tour leader, Chase, went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly. From organizing activities to providing insightful suggestions, Chase's expertise and enthusiasm enhanced our experience tremendously. In conclusion, the journey through New Zealand was nothing short of extraordinary. From its vibrant cities to its breathtaking natural wonders, this tour showcased the best that this remarkable country has to offer. We returned home with memories that will last a lifetime and a deep appreciation for the beauty of New Zealand. Highly recommended for any adventure seeker!

Just finished up my 9th trip with Detours Travel and it was yet again another incredible trip! My first trip was in Costa Rica in 2015. Since then I have traveled with Detours to Peru, Thailand, South Africa, Croatia, Israel/Jordan, Italy, Scandinavia and New Zealand. I am less than a week from returning from New Zealand and already thinking about my next trip.

My husband & I recently returned from the October 2023 Spain trip. We really loved our Detour Tours travel experience. Our trip was made up of 16 fellow travelers - 4 couples & 8 singles who were all personable and easy going. We had a wonderful Tour Leader, Scott, who was very knowledgeable, experienced, approachable and looked out for all of us.  He went out of his way to be inclusive and was a great source of information on the local sites and activities.  Detours arranged the hotel accommodations, the airport transfers, and the travel between the 4 amazing cities of Barcelona, Granada, Seville, and Madrid. The tour included walking tours and a major attraction at the start of each destination city, but the rest of the time we were free to explore, join a group activity, or just chill in our hotel room or a nearby cafe. Our favorite experiences were the walking tours because the local gay tour guides were so knowledgeable, informative and personable. We learned a lot about the rich local history and culture of the Spanish cities we visited.  Our second favorite experiences were the fun group dinners and pre-and post dinner drinks that Scott organized and which most of us joined in. Although there was no pressure to join in other optional activities, we ended up signing up for a number of them such as cooking class, watching a flamenco show, and seeing the Prado Museum. They were all memorable and fun. Thank you Scott & Detours. If you are looking for a well run LGBT group travel experience, we strongly recommend Detours Travel. Victor and Jim from Palm Springs CA.

BRAVA ITALIA Naples ~ Capri ~ Amalfi Coast

May 22 - 30, 2025.

That’s us in the photo above during our last tour to the Amalfi Coast prior to the pandemic, with picturesque Positano in the background! This incredible tour includes Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, the Isle of Capri, Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast. It is one of our most requested tours of all time, and we are thrilled to be offering it once again over the Memorial Day weekend next year. Come with us and you will understand why it is so popular with the Toto Tours crowd! Click here for full details.

Naples and Surrounds

Our tour begins in the historic city of Naples, which boasts incredible museums and imposing buildings. Towering over the horizon is Mount Vesuvius which created the frozen-in-time museums of Pompeii and Herculaneum, which we visit in a full-day excursion from the city. You’ll want to arrive early to soak up more of the atmosphere of this city!

The Isle of Capri

A hydrofoil whisks us across the Gulf of Naples to the Isle of Capri. During the day it is full of short-term visitors, but we are staying for two nights so we experience an entirely different side of Capri. In the evening, after the last day-trippers leave, a kind of exclusive peace settles over the island as those who are privileged to be staying here emerge for their evening stroll, or to sip drinks on the famous square, the Piazzetta. (Seen here: The “Mama Mia” bridge to Anacapri and the stunning colors inside the Blue Grotto)

The Amalfi Coast

Thrill to one of the world’s most scenic drives - the Amalfitana - passing between sea and mountains on a road carved out of the sheer rock. This coast was named on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage in 1997. We visit the towns of Ravello, Positano and Amalfi among others during our three-night stay among these amazing seaside towns. We return to Naples for our farewell festivities.

TIME AND TIDE WAIT FOR NO MAN . . .

Flowing gently with life.

Toto Tours is celebrating its 35th Anniversary in 2025, and it has been my privilege to bring this company into existence and to share so many life-changing experiences with all of you over these decades. This passion for travel has been my true calling in life, but now I need to heed other calls from my family and friends and from my own body and spirit. I will be hanging up my Ruby Slippers at the conclusion of our final tour next year. Toto Tours may very well continue on, with me in an advisory role for a short time after that. Details are still being ironed out and I’ll keep you posted. The upcoming tours represent our best chance to say farewell to each other in person. I hope you will travel with me at least one more time before the end of next year. This decision feels absolutely right for me, and it brings me great peace of mind. I recognize the truth of impermanence - nothing lasts forever - and I want to exit gracefully while I still have my full faculties and so much more living to do. Please join me in celebrating the beauty of the full circle of life. With love and gratitude, Dan Ware Please Note: If you have any outstanding credits with Toto Tours from pandemic-cancelled tours, you need to use those before the end of 2025.

Toto Tours has been serving the LGBT community since 1990. We have the distinction of being the only gay tour company in existence which has been operating with the same ownership and management for such a long span of time. We are dedicated to creating exciting travel opportunities that enable our community to explore the wonders of the world in comfort and safety while having the time of our lives. Our clients come back year after year to travel with friends they met on previous trips, meet new people, and explore different parts of the world. We constantly develop new adventures to appeal to everyone, from those venturing on their first international trip, to even the most experienced and frequent world travelers. Our name is derived from the Latin word meaning "all-inclusive." The rainbow colors of the gay flag weave through the word TOTO to symbolize our connections to each other, our communities, and the world. Welcome to Toto Tours, where gay men, lesbians, their close friends and adult family members are invited to travel together to discover all the delights this world has to offer -- "in Toto."

KEEP HOPE ALIVE

In this difficult time we have created a short video message (at the right) to offer encouragement, and to remind everyone that this pandemic will someday be a memory. We might feel helpless right now, and unable to do all the things that we love (like exploring the world), but we can use this time to take an exciting inner journey to explore more about who we are and what we believe. We could very well emerge from such an adventure as more centered humans who are better able to cope with unexpected situations, and grateful for all the good things we have. This is the Toto Spirit. We support you on this inner journey and look forward to the day when we can once again travel together! -- Dan Ware, Founder

Curators of Detailed Experiences

G ay travel (and LGBTQ+ travel in general) has seen remarkable changes and growth in the past decade. As a gay tour pioneer, this change has led to amazing opportunities in the kinds of lesbian and gay vacations that we are able to provide. For instance, LGBTQ+ and gay travel is now embraced in destinations and hotels where it wasn’t just 10 years ago. All gay group tours and vacations can now offer the same (or perhaps even better) quality and breadth of experiences as our straight counterparts.

Zoom Vacations® offers fun, luxurious, affordable LGBTQ+ and allies tours to the hottest destinations in the world. We understand that successful gay tours must entail personalized, sincere attention at every step of the journey, and getting to know our travelers is one of our favorite aspects of what we do. While we use the phrase gay vacations throughout this site, it may be more accurate to say that we provide gay-friendly travel (specifically gay-friendly tours). We encourage the friends and families of our gay travelers to come along, and we are always happy to assist gay-friendly travelers in any way we can.

As global prejudice continues to fall, gay travel, and certainly travel in general, is evolving in exciting, powerful ways. Zoom Vacations® is poised to meet this evolution, providing the most modern, fun, stylish gay vacations possible.

Our travelers say our trips are “over-the-top”, “magical”, “the best trip I ever had”, and “worth every penny”. We create experiences unique to Zoom Vacations® that you simply won’t find any place else. It’s as if you are traveling with a well-connected best friend who lives in the destination you are visiting, and who is inviting you to the hottest events, taking you on the most incredible excursions, and introducing you to the best restaurants. When you travel with Zoom Vacations®, you leave all prior notions of touring behind, and prepare yourself for something truly magical.

Your vacation awaits…

The Gay Travel Experience: New York City

New York is one of the most LGBT-friendly cities in the world. No matter who you are, being gay in New York City is easy. I’ve been a New York local for more than nine years, so I’ll give you some of the best New York City gay travel advice you can find.

new york city gay travel guide

From exploring storybook-like neighborhoods to dancing until sunrise at intense circuit parties, there are limitless ways for gay travelers to explore New York. Fashion, Broadway shows, and unforgettable skyline views are just a few.

Gay, lesbian and transgender populations in New York City are huge, so it’s easy for everyone to find their community.

New York gay guide

First-time visitors should plan their trip to New York carefully. This ubiquitously unforgiving city is exciting and inspiring, but can be a bit intimidating for some.

gay local in central park

Below, I’ll tell you where to stay for the best gay New York experience, recommend crowd-favorite hotels, restaurants, gay nightlife venues and share useful travel tips.

New York Gay Neighborhoods & Where to Stay

The location of your hotel or apartment rental in New York will have a huge impact on your travel experience. Where you stay, with respect to both the neighborhood and quality of accommodation, can absolutely make or break a trip.

best neighborhoods New York City gay tourists

Overall, New York has such an enormous gay population that it’s not necessary to limit yourself to gay-specific hotels, although I will say that some of New York City’s gay hotels all offer stylishly unique experiences that travelers love.

Below I’ll recommend some hotels and other places to stay by borough, in addition to covering the various gay neighborhoods of New York City.

Manhattan Hotels & Where to Stay

Gay travelers visiting New York have a ton of Manhattan neighborhood options. I recommend staying in Hell’s Kitchen , the  West Village , or Chelsea since these are New York’s best gay neighborhoods.

Manhattan hotels for gay travelers

Alternatively, the cozy  East Village  or upscale  SoHo are great Manhattan neighborhoods for tourists. There’s plenty of entertainment and culture to explore in these areas day and night.

New York City gay neighborhood

A  Hell’s Kitchen apartment rental is your best bet if you want to be in the heart of New York’s best gay neighborhood. You won’t find many hotels in Hell’s Kitchen given the area is largely residential. Most of the time, apartments are decently affordable, too.

If you prefer a standard hotel but still want to be near the gay bustle of Hell’s Kitchen, browse hotels along Central Park South or hotels in Midtown West .

1 hotel Central Park front

1 Hotel Central Park is a modern and luxurious option in this area of the city. I love the woody scent in the lobby, as well as the ground-floor coffee shop. Rooms here are super clean and have everything a traveler needs.

Manhattan hotel with cafe

Arlo Midtown is one of my personal favorite hotels in New York. It’s not easy to find a hotel as stylish as this at such an affordable price. I’ve recommended Arlo Midtown to many friends and they have all loved the hotel’s gorgeous style and rooftop.

New York City gay hotels

Manhattan’s  Meatpacking District  is a chic neighborhood just north of the West Village. Along the area’s historic cobblestone roads you’ll find plenty of luxury shops and trendy nightclubs that occupy buildings once used as meatpacking facilities.

The Standard High Line  is one of the most beloved New York City gay hotels . This high-rise hotel is right here on the edge of the Meatpacking District. Locals love their rooftop and bar!

The Standard High Line room

I recommend gay travelers avoid hotels in Midtown East , the Financial District  and Chinatown , all for different reasons.

Firstly, most gay locals don’t live in these areas. Midtown East is isolated from gay nightlife, the Financial District can feel lifeless in the evening, and Chinatown is both isolated and dirty.

If you want to stay in Manhattan, go with the other areas mentioned above!

Brooklyn bridge

Brooklyn Hotels & Where to Stay

Williamsburg is the ideal neighborhood for New York City gay travelers who want to experience that classic “Brooklyn” feel. It’s vibrant and gritty at the same time.

Brooklyn gay neighborhood

Also, Williamsburg is essentially Brooklyn’s gay neighborhood. However, you’ll find gay locals from here all the way eastward through the middle of Bushwick , following the route of the L subway corridor.

New York City gay hotel recommendations

The Williamsburg Hotel has some of the most stylish hotel rooms in New York. The bathrooms are incredible, as are the views from the small private balconies. They have an epic rooftop pool, too!

The Williamsburg Hotel brooklyn

Calmer vibes can be found in the Fort Greene and Park Slope neighborhoods, best for park lovers or families. Fort Greene & Park Slope apartment rentals have that quintessential “upscale Brooklyn” vibe.

Avoid staying in  Bed-Stuy , Crown Heights , and definitely East New York , since these Brooklyn neighborhoods are not well-suited for travelers and tend to be less safe.

Where to Stay in Queens

Astoria has the most upbeat and authentic New York feel of any neighborhood in Queens. Home of the borough’s best gay nightlife, Astoria is also the Queens gay neighborhood.

Queens gay neighborhood bar

Located just north of Long Island City, Astoria has convenient subway access to Manhattan, making for a convenient yet relatively affordable area of New York for travelers.

best neighborhoods in Queens

You’re best off with an apartment rental in Astoria  since the neighborhood is mostly residential.

Hotels in Long Island City have become a fantastic in-between option as the neighborhood has sprouted dozens of skyscrapers in recent years. Here you’ll only be one stop away from Manhattan while still being close to Astoria’s gay nightlife.

New York City Gay-Popular Restaurants

New York City has an astronomical number of restaurants . Every type of cuisine is within arm’s reach, too. Here are my select favorites and recommendations.

New York City gay restaurant

Elmo – One of the most iconic New York City gay restaurants. They’ve been around since 2001, serving American comfort cuisine in Chelsea. Elmo is always packed with gay men, who enjoy the company of the restaurant’s gay servers and bartenders.

Elmo gay restaurant New York City

La Pulpería – Popular for energetic drag brunches with unlimited cocktails in a rustic-feeling Latin-style restaurant.

Totto Ramen  – Cozy and inexpensive ramen shop with multiple locations in Hell’s Kitchen and East Midtown. Cash only.

Agave  – Wildly popular Mexican brunch in the West Village. There are typically long waiting lists for reservations, so make them early.

New York City gay restaurant

GITANO Garden of Love  – Showing off some beautiful Tulum vibes, GITANO is one of the best summertime restaurants in New York popular with gay locals. It’s a delicious Mexican spot in SoHo with a ton of cozy couches, large tables, and a wraparound bar.

Cheeseboat Hell’s Kitchen – Unique traditional Georgian restaurant serving hilariously-named cocktails like “Putin’s Tears” with some of the friendliest service I’ve ever experienced in New York City.

Amy’s Bread  – Quaint coffee shop with breakfast treats located in Hell’s Kitchen. Popular with gay locals.

New York gay traveler

Turkuaz Restaurant – Delicious and authentic Turkish cuisine with some of the best service I’ve ever received in New York. Their rear outdoor seating area makes you feel like you’re in the Mediterranean!

As-Is NYC – Chic, dimly-lit imported beer bar in Hell’s Kitchen with a rotating selection and mouth-watering bar food. Great for couples. Attracts a crowd during happy hour, but is quieter later in the evening.

UOGASHI New York sushi

Pardon My French  – French restaurant in the East Village with a fantastic bottomless brunch.

Cafeteria  – Brunch popular with gay locals in warmer weather. Mouth-watering custom drinks in West Midtown. Can get busy in summer, so it’s best to call for a reservation.

Holey Cream

Holey Cream – My absolute favorite take-out dessert spot in New York. In the middle of the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, Holey Cream serves creamy ice cream sandwiches using warm donuts. They sound delicious, but taste even better than they sound!

Seamore's Chelsea cocktail

Norma  – Authentic Sicilian restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen with super friendly staff, traditional cocktails, and outdoor seating. One of my favorites!

gay couple at New York City restaurant

La Pecora Bianca  – Fantastic gay-friendly New York Italian restaurant in NoMad. I’ve enjoyed a few group dinners here and always loved the wine selection and service.

Pastis  – The five-star service and unbeatable food at Pastis is something you definitely won’t forget. The ambiance is incredible with the feel of a Paris Bistro. Making a reservation is best since this popular restaurant fills quickly.

ilili Lebanese Restaurant New York

ilili Restaurant – Authentic upscale Lebanese restaurant on Fifth Avenue. Here you’ll find a host of rich, traditional dishes from Lebanon . Definitely try some Arak to drink and Knefeh for dessert!

The Big Gay Ice Cream Shop – Perfect place to cool down in summer with locations in both the Seaport District and Upper West Side in Manhattan.

New York City Gay Travel Experiences

There are tons of things for gay travelers to do in New York, no matter whether it’s day, night, a weekday or weekend. Below are some of my favorite things to do in New York, even as a local.

New York gay experience at art museum

Explore World-Class Museums

New York has endless options for well-known museums and several are among the top 10 art museums worldwide.

best museum in New York

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a must for first-timers. It’s also super budget-friendly, with only a $5 suggested donation. The Met has so many exhibits spanning so many periods, it honestly could take days to see everything inside.

exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Museum of Modern Art is another top museum in New York. I always enjoy visiting—it’s a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

Other popular options I’d recommend include The Whitney Museum of American Art and the world’s first gay art museum, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art .

Christopher Street Pier

Relax at the Christopher Street Pier with all the gay locals during warm sunny days in New York. Bring some food and a packable lawn blanket to spread out while enjoying views of the World Trade Center.

New York City gay tourist activities

Little Island

Little Island is one of the city’s newest attractions. A small public park built on pedestals above the Hudson River, there’s plenty of open space to sit in the grass, grab a snack or wander the pathway to the park’s lookout point.

Explore the West Village & Stonewall

A historic New York City gay neighborhood with all sorts of boutique shops, spend an afternoon wandering Manhattan’s quaint West Village . You’ll see rainbow flags everywhere!

pride flag in west village

An LGBTQ+ historical walking tour is one of the easiest ways to get to know the area. Plus, it’s a great way to meet new people. There are even Greenwich and West Village LGBTQ+ history and food tours available.

Stonewall New York City gay landmark

Stroll by the Stonewall National Monument in the West Village, the famous place of the 1969 riots in that contributed to the Gay Liberation Movement. Stop in the tavern for a drink and pay some gratitude to the LGBT rights we do have!

New York City skyline

New York's Newest Observation Decks

Glitzy new observation decks have recently opened atop some of New York City’s shiny new skyscrapers. Now, the Empire State Building Observatory , 30 Rockefeller Plaza, and the World Trace Center aren’t the only places you can get epic skyline views.

Edge New York observation deck

Grab tickets for The Edge NYC , the highest outdoor observation deck in the Western Hemisphere! Experience the glass floor panel along with breathtaking views of the New York skyline and the Hudson River.

Sunset is the most popular time and tickets around this part of the day sell out fast, so book early.

SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is New York’s newest observatory and it’s truly jaw-dropping. With two expansive all-glass levels and glass-floor ledges that levitate over 1000 feet above street level, the experience here is unforgettable. I had a ton of fun playing in the room filled with silver balloons!

New York City gay tours

Additional private experiences are available as well, including the Ascent glass-floor elevator ride up to an even higher and more private observatory area.

Shop My Favorites → Luggage, Backpacks & Travel Bags

Sail The New York Harbor

Why pay for something you can get for free? Take a free ride on the IKEA Water Taxi or the Staten Island Ferry   Both ferries shuttle back and forth from downtown Manhattan. You may not want to go to Staten Island or IKEA, but the ride is beautiful.

gay area of Central Park

Relax in Sheep Meadow

Sheep Meadow is a local gay hangout spot in Central Park where the LGBT community convenes on the second Sunday of each month in the summer. New York gay locals usually refer to it as “Sheeps Meadow.” Here’s the exact location in Central Park .

Sheep Meadow gay area

Gay locals flaunt their sexy swimwear here in Sheep Meadow all summer, even though there’s nowhere to swim! Bring plenty of snacks, cold water, and a compact packable picnic blanket .

Fuel Up on Street Food

Grab some lunch to go at a Halal food truck. Food from these trucks is delicious, cheap, and loved by locals. One of the most famous vendors is The Halal Guys . But in all my experience, any street cart that sells Halal food is usually great.

Walk The Brooklyn Bridge

Along the Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian path, you’ll find a ton of tourists, but this is still an experience that first-timers always want to do at least once! Walking across is fantastic in the early morning or late afternoon for sunset.

brooklyn bridge park

Brooklyn Bridge Park is along the waterfront in the area between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. One of the best outdoor places to visit in New York, there’s a ton to do here.

Walk along the waterfront promenade, grab food or drinks at the Time Out Market or explore some of the area’s upscale shops.

Visit Local New York Gay Beaches

The New York City area has a couple of noteworthy gay beaches worth a day trip during summertime. The most popular is Gunnison Beach . While it’s technically in New Jersey, you’ll find New York gay locals here every weekend.

New York City gay beaches

Gunnison is also one of the most popular nude beaches in the metro area. You can catch the Seastreak Ferry that will take you there directly from Manhattan

Jacob Riis gay beach

Jacob Riis Beach is the official New York City gay beach and has been a popular summertime LGBTQ hangout since the 1940s. It’s located in southern Queens on the Rockaway Peninsula, which is easily reachable via public transit.

Make sure to pack snacks and a day bag full of all your gay beach essentials because there’s not too many places for refreshments near Riis Beach.

Explore Manhatan's Seaport District

Downtown Manhattan’s Seaport District is a great evening adventure, popular for evening cocktails outdoors. The Seaport is a rapidly developing area of Manhattan with scenic views of the Brooklyn Bridge, summer movie screenings, and the wonderful Pier 17 .

Drinks on Stone Street

Local New Yorkers are obsessed with Stone Street , a haven for after-work drinks in the Financial District. Charming outdoor picnic tables on a cobblestone street lined with high-end pubs will warm your soul.

New York Gay Bars

There are so many gay bars in New York. In terms of strictly gay bars, my personal favorites are REBAR Chelsea , Rise Bar in Hell’s Kitchen, and Eagle NYC gay leather bar.

With endless bar options full of handsome locals to explore, single gay travelers will have an especially epic time in New York!

Below, you’ll find recommendations for gay parties and events!

New York Gay Parties

New York City has all different types of gay parties, from massive circuit events to upscale rooftop gatherings. The list below covers them all!

Larger gay parties in New York are hosted monthly or a few times per year, but there’s almost always at least one major gay party happening every weekend. A few of them change location, so double check the party’s social media before heading out.

New York City gay party

Horse Meat Disco

Horse Meat Disco is one of New York’s biggest and most popular gay parties. These massive dance parties are usually held at the Knockdown Center , an industrial venue with both indoor and outdoor spaces on multiple levels.

Expect more lyrical music than traditional circuit parties , but a similar type of gay crowd.

horse meat disco New York City

WRECKED is also held in the Knockdown Center—in the underground space called Basement New York .

This is an event where you won’t find anyone talking or looking at their phone while dancing. On the dance floor at WRECKED parties, talking and phone use are not allowed on the dance floor.

This focus on enjoying dancing as well as respect for personal space helps the party live up to being “a staple of tripping, psychedelic dance in the queer underground.”

UltraMaroon

UltraMaroon is one of my new favorite gay parties in New York. This party is a monthly event, centrally located in a large midtown Manhattan club space called Blue Midtown .

Ultramaroon Party New York City

Expect upbeat electronic music and tons of shirtless men. The vibe is something between a circuit party and a chic urban disco. People wear everything from button-down shirts to ostentatious club-kid outfits.

Battle Hymn

Battle Hymn is a semi-monthly NYC gay party hugely popular with locals. LadyFag produces and hosts this huge party in elaborate venues, typically in Manhattan. Visitors come all the way from neighboring cities to experience these LadyFag mega parties.

New York City gay party

Spilled Milk & Chim3ra

Spilled Milk and Chim3ra are two relatively new gay parties also hosted by LadyFag. They both have a mix of circuit and queer crowds. Spilled Milk is held at the new Música Club in Manhattan, which used to be the old Space Ibiza nightclub. Chim3ra is at Nebula Club .

spilled milk new york city gay party

Expect several mega-rooms/levels with dark, electronic beats at each of these parties. Make sure to wear your most eccentric and flashy gay circuit gear .

MEAT NEW YORK

MEAT NYC  parties are definitely the most popular semi-regular gay circuit parties in New York. Expect a sweaty, shirtless and mainly 30+ crowd. MEAT is a leather & fur-fetish-themed party with dark rooms (one of the few New York City gay parties that has them).

Gay circuit parties New York City

Wearing mostly jockstraps and sexy underwear , gay men go back and forth from the dance floor to the cruising area, which is in a sectioned-off area of the club.

There is always a clothes check available, too. Make sure to bring cash for this!

Related → Gay Sex Parties in New York City

Alegria is consistently one of the most extravagant gay dance parties in New York.

Hosted by Ric Sena , these massive circuit parties tend to only be held surrounding holiday weekends or other popular events. But when they do happen, you can bet all the circuit gays in NYC will be there.

New York City gay circuit party

Alegria Sunrise is the daytime after-hours version of the Alegria party. These parties typically start at 12 PM and continue all day at a glorious rooftop venue with skyline views.

Alegria New York gay party

Many Alegria Sunrise parties are at The Roof at 74 Wythe , a chic event space with views of Manhattan. It’s adjacent to the gorgeous Wythe Hotel , which is the perfect place to stay if you’ll be attending Alegria Sunrise!

Parties at 3 Dollar Bill

3 Dollar Bill is a hugely popular gay event space in East Williamsburg, branded as New York’s premier queer bar and performance venue.

MEAT party at 3 Dollar Bill

They’re well-known for hosting large circuit parties (like MEAT NYC mentioned above), and a bunch of other popular gay parties like Ty Tea, Love Prism, and DILF XL.

gay party van rental

Renting a van for your group of friends can be super fun and practical if you’re traveling to clubs in Brooklyn from Manhattan or somewhere not very close. I’ve done this a couple of times and had such a blast!

Le Bain  is a chic, well-known gay party that every visitor should try. There’s lots of space to lounge as well as a fun area for dancing. Le Bain is hosted on the rooftop terrace of the Standard Hotel at the High Line. The views are absolutely stunning.

Le Bain sunday gay party

The party is usually held on Tuesday or Sunday evenings depending on the season. But always confirm ahead of time since there are some weeks when the Le Bain rooftop space is reserved for private parties.

Le Bain NYC rooftop party

PHD at the Dream Hotel Downtown

PHD at the Dream Hotel Downtown  is another gay party with gorgeous panoramic views of New York’s skyline. This party is the place to be on Sunday afternoon.

There’s plenty of seating along PHD’s indoor-outdoor rooftop terrace space. Inside there is always plenty of dancing along with wildly dressed performers on a small stage. The vibe is upscale, yet rowdy as the afternoon progresses. Dress your best!

FLY Sundays at Monarch

FLY Sundays is a summertime rooftop gay party at the Monarch Rooftop with sweet gummy-bear fruit punch cocktails, upbeat music and a beautiful view of the Empire State Building.

Monarch NYC gay party

Locals tend to dress their summer-casual best, with tank tops certainly welcome. Arrive earlier in the afternoon to avoid a long entry line—waiting on the hot city street is no fun! See photos on the FLY Sundays Instagram .

Are you a tourist looking for New York City gay cruising spots or saunas? New York is a little different when it comes to the sauna scene.

Travel Tips for New York City

New york is not a hostel city.

For budget travelers, I advise against staying in hostels. New York is definitely not a hostel city. Many times, the hostels that exist in New York can be even more expensive than an apartment rental or hotel!

New York travel tips

VRBO is a good bet for cheaper accommodations. Make sure you dive deep into the reviews as things can be a little deceptive if you’re not thorough.

Long Lines Usually Aren't Worth It

Don’t wait in any crazy lines for restaurants. Places like Katz’s Deli and Pick-a-Bagel are not worth it and locals avoid them. Don’t eat at any standard restaurants in Times Square, either. Most of them are low quality and overpriced.

If visiting One World Trade Center is on your list, purchase tickets online to save yourself at least an hour of waiting in line.

Stay Through a Weekend if Possible

You will need a lot of time to thoroughly explore the Big Apple. Seven days is an ideal length, although four to five is doable. Staying through a weekend is preferable to get a taste of larger gay nightlife activities.

Tips For Bars & Nightlife

Going to a party with a large group of friends? Renting a party van or small party bus is super fun! Check out Carmel , a trustworthy van and limo rental service that operates in New York City.

new york gay locals with drag queen

Don’t forget your personal identification or passport. You will need it to get into just about every bar/party. Many times international tourists forget about this! Sometimes a photo will be accepted, but not always.

New York City gay friends

Upon entering gay circuit parties and other large events, expect to be thoroughly searched. Bars in New York close at 4 AM. Large parties can go longer into the morning hours but have to stop serving alcohol at 4 AM.

NYC Luggage Storage

Lugging your bags around can be super frustrating in New York City. Before I lived here, finding a place to store my bags for just an afternoon was a sketchy experience.

Thankfully there are now lots of trustworthy places where you can store luggage in New York .

Navigating New York's Subway

If you plan on using the subway to get around, I recommend buying a weekly unlimited MetroCard. This can be used on all buses and subways. Keep in mind that you cannot buy one card for multiple people as it cannot be used consecutively in a short period of time.

New York City subway station

Many NYC subway stations are separated into an “uptown” and a “downtown” side. Often, there is no connection between them once you enter one of the sides. Be sure you know what direction you’re headed before paying!

For bus, subway, and local train times, download the  MTA TrainTime application . This all-in-one app allows you to see when scheduled busses are coming and is where you can buy tickets for trains like the LIRR and Metro North.

All New York City subway stations now have contactless systems installed . The same goes for buses. Easily swipe your phone or tap your card to purchase your single-ride ticket. It works really well!

Times Square

New York’s subway system runs 24 hours a day, but that doesn’t mean certain lines stop running. Do your research before relying on the train late at night. Also, keep in mind that construction often takes place on weekends, so some subway routes may be much slower.

Traveling through a NYC airport? They can be very stressful, not to mention a little run down. (Hey, at this point we’re known for it). Check out these tips for reducing airport stress .

Tips to Save Money in New York

New York is expensive, so here is a list of even more quick tips to save you cash as you explore.

First of all, corner deli food is delicious. You definitely get the most volume for your dollar. Fill up with a hero! Breakfast sandwiches in these places are around 5 dollars. Don’t pay any more than that!

gay New York City

Halal food trucks are the cheapest and certainly most delicious food around. $8 will get you a big tray of meat and rice.

New York City gay life

Keep rush hours and inclement weather in mind when you plan to travel by car. Costs of Uber and Lyft can skyrocket to unbelievable levels at peak times. I’ve seen rides cost $50 for a short ride within midtown during a thunderstorm! Planning ahead will help you save.

Make sure you see my top recommendations for New York gay hotels !

Don’t pass up a visit to Fire Island if you’re visiting NYC between June and September. Read more in wolfyy’s Fire Island Pines gay guide .

Gay San Diego Travel Guide

The BEST Gay-Friendly Hotels, Resorts, Bars/Clubs & Events in San Diego

San Diego Image

Gay San Diego

America's finest city. If San Diego is known for anything, it's got to be its perfect weather. Temperatures average 70 degrees (F) nearly every day, and as such, California's second-largest city enjoys gorgeous weather year-round.

"The birthplace of California," Gay San Diego is the first location European explorers landed when visiting the West Coast for the first time. The Spanish subsequently built the first of the Alta California Missions here and a Presidio to protect the growing region from attack. Both the San Diego Mission (or Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala) and the San Diego Presidio can still be visited today.  The Spanish influence can still be seen throughout the city although the Mexican influence - especially in Old Town -- probably outweighs the former contemporarily. You're not likely to find better, authentic Mexican food anywhere else in America, and many citizens speak Spanish as well as English.

Also, did you know that San Diego’s Balboa and Civic Theaters (both within a 5-minute walk from the Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter ) have an amazing lineup of shows  BroadwaySD plays in both of those theaters?

Make it a true theater experience:   DINNER + SHOW + STAY ?  Check out Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter's special offer of 20% food at Bronze Bird when you show your same-day performance ticket.  Then spend the night!

California's second-largest city by population is also home to thriving science and defense industries. There are large firms in technology, aviation, biotechnology, military, and education, which translates to over 40% of the population holding at least a bachelor's degree. Being home to the world's largest naval fleet means there are sailors everywhere. Marine base Camp Pendleton is only about an hour's drive away too, so there is a large and celebrated military presence in the city.

If you're gay and happen to be in Gay San Diego, you'll want to head to Hillcrest. The gayborhood is North and West of Balboa Park and home to some of San Diego's best food options. Here you'll find dozens of bars and clubs along the main strip of University Avenue, including perennial favorites like Urban Mo's and Rich's. Pride events also occur in the area, with the parade route running from University down 6th Avenue and ending in the park. San Diego has one of the largest nude beaches in the nation. Black's Beach stretches for several miles under beautiful cliffs west of Torrey Pines State Park and is the perfect place to spend the lazy Sunday after Pride suntanning.

Best Time to Visit San Diego

Top Things to See and Do in San Diego

MUST DO: Attractions & Activities

MUST EAT: Gay-Friendly Dining

MUST VISIT: Gay-Friendly Bars & Nightlife

Travel Safety Tips

Being the second-largest city in California means Gay San Diego is no stranger to diversity, and gays here are welcomed with open arms. They tend to concentrate in the gayborhood of Hillcrest, where there are prominent bars and restaurants that gays frequently attend. There's also a newly-installed, large Rainbow flag flying proudly a short walk away from the recently re-named Harvey Milk Street. There are several gay bars outside of Hillcrest even, with The Hole in Point Loma and Bourbon Street Pub and Grill being notable. The neighborhoods around Hillcrest also serve as bastions of the gay community. Mission Hills, University Heights, and North Park have significant gay populations. You're likely to find a handful of leather bars and specialty shops in North Park, as it's a bit rougher around the edges than Hillcrest, and Mission Hills is more residential. University Heights is very gay-friendly but much quieter than Hillcrest.

Black's Beach, just west of UCSD and accessible from paths near the Torrey Pines Gliderport, is several miles of uninterrupted coastline beneath gorgeous cliffs and blanketed in sunshine. Don't forget the sunscreen! There's also a prominent gay beach in Gay San Diego, or at least the gays have claimed the nude beach as their own.

Gay San Diego boasts some of the most spectacular weather in the country. There's always some event in the city, whether it's a high-heel race through Hillcrest or Comic-Con downtown, and why wouldn't you participate when it's beautiful outside nearly every day!  One of the best times to visit San Diego is between the months of March through May and September through November, when the weather will always be perfect. These are also considered the slower months, so that traffic will be down, and room rates should be down.

Gay-Friendly Dining

San Diego is known for having some of the best Mexican food you can find, and the locals rave about the quality and authenticity. So while visiting, try some!

Old Town San Diego offers many different Mexican restaurants that serve hand-made tortillas and traditional serving plates.  The atmosphere is festive and you'll be surrounded by traditional decor. If you prefer to stay away from the tourist locations and explore other areas where the local restaurants serve authentic Mexican dishes, you'll still get delicious food...just without all the decor.

No matter what, if you love food as much as we do, you'll be very happy with all the gay-friendly restaurants in San Diego.  Here are just a few recommendations:

Café 21 is a full-service eatery with Azerbaijan roots, where you'll encounter a unique approach to a gourmet breakfast, lunch and dinner. They provide neighbors with an exotic and flavorful experience with signature homemade bread sandwiches, fresh organic salads, hearty breakfasts, and a wide selection of organic coffees, teas, and more.

Babycakes will have you asking for dessert first, and for a good reason. They're best known for their cocktails and cupcakes - a fun combination to leisurely break your Sunday afternoon.

Costa Brava

Costa Brava is a Spanish restaurant located in Pacific Beach, a gorgeous area known for its beach culture! This restaurant is unique in San Diego; it is one of the few restaurants that import "jamon iberico" from Spain.

MUST VISIT: San Diego Gay-Friendly Bars & Nightlife

San Diego has some of the best gay bars and clubs around. For a night of dancing and fun drinks for all, look no further than San Diego's nightlife!

Urban Mo's

Urban Mo's is part restaurant, part bar, and part nightclub. Located in the heart of Hillcrest, on 308 University Avenue, this perfect concoction of food, drink, and dance will have you asking for seconds (maybe thirds?).

Gossip Grill

Gossip Grill is the best lesbian bar in town! People are friendly, and the bartenders are always fabulous. The location is fantastic because you can even stumble to the first gay-owned and operated brewery in the U.S. right nearby!

True North is a cool straight gay-friendly sports bar located in the heart of North Park. They have 2/3 pool tables, a great bar sitting area with TVs all over, and the best part is that the staff members are lovely! This bar is also within walking distance of restaurants, coffee shops, North Park Theater, and many other entertainment places.

San Diego is considered a safe place to visit. The weather is perfect, and the people are friendly, so you're guaranteed to have a great time. Feel free to be your most authentic self here, especially in Hillcrest.

While visiting, always practice common sense travel safety. Remember where you parked, plan how to get back to your room by familiarizing yourself with a map ahead of time, and lock up all your valuables in the hotel safe. That way, you can lounge by the ocean, have some great tacos, and dance the night away without worrying about the world.

22 gorgeous gay men from around the world to celebrate Elska's 9-year anniversary

Courtesy of Elska Magazine

It's hard to believe, but for the past nine years now, Elska Magazine has been blessing the world with some of our favorite — and gay — travel portraits of men from all over the world!

Thanks to Elska , we've had the privilege of meeting a diverse, large group of men from all corners of the globe and in many underrated cities in some of the most traveled-to countries. We've met men from Mumbai , heartthrobs from Yokohama , hunks from Munich , and studs from San Francisco , and everywhere else in between!

" Elska is a bi-monthly photography and storytelling publication dedicated to sharing the bodies and voices of men from LGBTQ + communities all over the world," the publication's about page reads about who they are. "Each issue is made in a different city where readers get to know to a cross-section of everyday local guys through honest photography and personal stories."

"I love to travel, I love photography, and I love men!" Elska 's editor and chief photographer Liam Campbell said in a statement about what the point of the project is. " Elska started as a way to combine these loves into a publication that I hoped would enable me to do these three things. Essentially Elska is a record of my travels, one city at a time, with the focus on the men I meet there.

"Beyond this, Elska is a reaction to my rejection of an early dream to be a fashion photographer. When I saw first-hand how disgustingly models are treated and how nasty the industry is in general, I wanted to create something that would treat people with respect and dignity, and that would reflect the way I perceive beauty, which is something connected to love. By getting to know the men I photograph, both through the intimate process of a photoshoot and through the stories they share, a connection develops, a sort of act of love, which reveals their beauty. And I hope that through sharing my honest style of photography and these men's stories, readers will also discover their beauty and fall in love."

To celebrate Elska' s nearly decade-long reign of swoon-worthy, sexy travel content, we thought it'd fun to re-meet some of the gorgeous gays of the zine from over the years and from all over!

Scroll through to see more portraits from Elska 's nine-year celebration! And for more information on Elska and to order previous issues, visit their official website here .

This Gay-owned Adults-only Boutique Hotel in Downtown Las Vegas Is a Safe Haven for Queer Travelers — Here's What It's Like to Stay

Bent Inn is the only gay-owned LGBTQ+ boutique hotel in Las Vegas.

The Location

Food and drink, activities and experiences.

Several months after its launch, the Bent Inn , the only gay-owned LGBTQ+ boutique hotel in Las Vegas, is hitting its stride at the peak of pool season. It’s been a long road for its owners — four years, to be exact — just to get the place up and running.

On the day I arrived, a lively crowd gathered and settled around the circular bar, which also serves as the reception desk at this small 33-room hotel. When my partner and I checked in, we were each offered a welcome cocktail to take at our leisure during our stay. Why not right now? So we settled in at the bar, ordered tequila sodas, and chatted with the owner and bartender to get acquainted with the property and find out their favorite downtown spots. (We already had ours.)

For us, our evening plans were to make the short walk to see the fire-breathing mantis at Downtown Container Park, then head over to Atomic Liquors , which was the first free-standing bar in Las Vegas, for some people-watching, a local brew and the phenomenal pan pizza.

When we returned to the Bent bar later that Saturday evening, it was packed. The lights were low and the energy level was sky-high. Instead of sports, the televisions were playing music videos that bounced between Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Madonna, and Troye Sivan. It created a more clubby vibe that led to some dancing, mingling, and perhaps a bit of flirting among the guests, who were a smattering of out-of-towners and locals looking for a casual, accepting place to grab a drink and meet like-minded people. And at a bar that’s open 24 hours, it’s become a popular gay hangout.

  • The Bent Inn blends mid-century Palm Springs with industrial Las Vegas making it a true fit for its downtown location.
  • The rooms are cozy and comfortable with the best ones overlooking all the action at the pool.
  • A community — a Bent brotherhood of welcoming regulars — has developed. They gather for pool parties and beer busts at the bar.
  • The retro resort is close to the downtown bar and restaurant scene.

Bent Inn is the brainchild of Palm Springs hoteliers Greg Kafka and Mark Hunter. The couple owned two hotels in Palm Springs before they brought their vision to Las Vegas. Their timing,  however, was unfortunate. They purchased the complex, then an apartment building, in January 2020. Six weeks later Covid hit and froze the world and all of their plans. “Everything came to a screeching halt,” Hunter recalled to Travel + Leisure .

It would be 18 months before they would even be allowed to touch the property, nevertheless start the extensive renovations, and just short of four years before the Bent Inn opened its doors. “It was definitely a challenge to get it wrapped up and done,” Hunter said.

The couple sold their two Palm Springs properties, Escape Resort and Desert Paradise, to move to Sin City, with a vision to create a culture and gay gathering spot in downtown Las Vegas. When I popped in, it was exactly that. The guests and staff were friendly, giving the hotel a clear welcoming vibe that’s led a crowd of regulars there to frequent it often.

The postage stamp property isn’t meant to be a luxe resort. Instead, it’s a safe haven. An inclusive “straight friendly” escape where locals and visitors interact over stiff margaritas while on inflatable pool floats. After all, the Bent Inn is about the people and the atmosphere. That’s what makes this hotel special. You’re here to make friends and go out and explore downtown Las Vegas and the Arts District.

With just 33 rooms, the property footprint is not all that large and the rooms reflect this. I found our room with its Juliet balcony overlooking the pool to be cozy and comfortable with just enough space to relax before mingling at the bar or lounging poolside. After all, the Bent Inn is all about its social scene and not hibernating in the room.

The hotel has four room types. The top category is the poolside patio rooms, each with a sliding glass door that leads to a small, private patio and sitting area adjacent to the pool. Other room categories include the balcony rooms, an atrium king (without a view), and the bunkhouse–individual hostel-style rooms with twin-size beds and shared amenities for solo travelers.

The amenities are basic. There was no refrigerator in my room, but it did have a 65-inch television and Bluetooth-enabled radio, charger, and speaker. In a nod to kitsch, custom pulp fiction artwork of imaginary book covers decorated the walls. These risque, tongue-in-cheek romance novel wannabees show shirtless men in compromising positions with titles such as “Locker-Room Lovers,” “Gay Safari” and “Moonlight Motel.”

Hunter described the artwork as being a fun diversion and conversation starter. “We found a lot of humor in old 1950s pulp fiction book covers so we paid homage to them, recreating them in the same style but we tweaked them just enough to fit our environment,” he told T+L.

The Bent Inn sits on a pocket of land surrounded by vacant, undeveloped lots. It’s not a sexy neighborhood by any means. But while the location may be gritty, most visitors make it their primary stop, utilizing the free parking. It’s also a short walk to the Container Park. From there, you’re in the middle of a string of bars in East Fremont.

I’m a big fan of downtown Las Vegas. Over the past several years, a culture and vibe has developed. Walkable neighborhoods, like the Arts District, about a mile and a half away from the hotel, have a number of boutiques, galleries, restaurants, bars, and brewpubs. Guests staying at the hotel are just a quick Uber ride away from it all.

The bar is lively and there are nearly always two-for-one well drinks or certain draft beers on special. Only the primetime hours from 7 pm to 2 am seem to have regular pricing. And Sunday mornings feature bottomless mimosas or Bloody Marys for a tidy $20.

On the dining side, it’s pub food. Fat, juicy burgers, buffalo-style grilled chicken sandwiches, tacos, and flatbreads like a Texas BBQ-style naan with grilled chicken, bacon, and red peppers.

I found the brunch to be fun and inviting and the dishes echoed that. A ham and cheese quiche croissant and carne asada toast are unique takes on normal brunch classics as are the three crispy chicken and waffle sliders that come served with a homemade bitter blackberry bourbon jam.

The heated pool, oversized hot tub and bar is where everyone goes. The Bent has become downtown’s gathering spot for the gay community and weekly events keep the locals coming back. From the pool parties and beer busts to karaoke, comedy and trivia nights, there is always something to do.

No place like home: A gay comedian's club odyssey

Localish logo

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey -- Comedian Rich Kiamco is proud, grateful and relieved that the successful comedy road show he created and has produced for more than decade has finally found a permanent home.

Kiamco, an out gay comic who's appeared on the "Howard Stern Show" and is featured in ABC Owned Television's "Our America: Who I'm Meant To Be" series, launched The Laugh Tour in Jersey City, New Jersey, in September 2010.

"Originally it was a pop-up show that would tour around Jersey City, the Catskills region, eastern Pennsylvania," he explained.

It was a way for the comedian to get stage time in front of audiences and help boost fellow comics at the same time.

Christine Goodman, director of the Jersey City Office of Cultural Affairs, co-produced many of those early shows with Kiamco in a former role with Art House Productions, a performing-arts venue in the city.

"From the beginning, Rich had a real commitment to seeing The Laugh Tour through to the point of having a permanent home and a steady audience," she said.

The show toured for about a decade before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down venues everywhere. Kiamco launched an online version, hosting shows out of his apartment on Zoom for small groups of fans.

And then his partner and longtime manager, Sandy Gunar, died from COVID. His death and Kiamco's deep grief, friends say, ultimately became the impetus for him to find a permanent home for his shows.

"I was just trying to find something to do other than endless Zoom grief groups," Kiamco said. "And Dorrian's Red Hand, which has been here for over 20 years in Jersey City, had a room."

He approached the owners of the restaurant on Washington Boulevard and asked if they'd let him try hosting shows in the private dining room adjacent to the main bar and dining area.

They agreed, and he started with a handful of people and one show a week. Word began to spread, and eventually the room started filling up with people starting to venture out after months of pandemic lockdown.

Now, just over two years later, the club has become an established success.

"Last night was our 64th sold-out show," Kiamco said one day last spring. "We've expanded to five shows a week. You know, pinch me. It's been a dream come true."

Its all been a labor of labor for the comedian. The club's success is a testament to his tireless work and constant innovation, but he's quick to share the credit.

"This comedy club is just part of a bigger conversation of supporting all these other comedians that are coming through here to tell their stories and entertain," he said. "I'm just so grateful to be part of it."

Omar apollo goes full-frontal in ‘queer’ & more early reactions to luca guadagnino’s explicit gay odyssey.

tours gay clubs

The fall film festival season just got a little more… Queer , thanks to the arrival of the latest feature from Call Me By Your Name and Challengers filmmaker Luca Guadagnino.

Based on a novel of the same name from acclaimed writer William S. Burroughs, the drama finds Daniel Craig playing Lee, a lonely American drug addict living in Mexico City in the ’50s who becomes infatuated with a young student ( Outer Banks ‘ Drew Starkey).

We’ve been following the project pretty closely (especially after Guadagnino teased the film’s sex scenes would be “numerous and quite scandalous”), devouring every morsel of information we could find since it was announced in late 2022. And, now that Queer has finally debuted at the Venice Film Festival, we are being fed .

Omar Apollo makes his full-frontal acting debut in Queer

Ahead of the film’s world premiere, co-stars Drew Starkey and Omar Apollo—the pop star whose role was widely speculated before being confirmed earlier this summer —linked up for a conversation in Interview magazine that certainly raised some eyebrows.

In the piece, the pair sing each one another’s praises and clearly became fast friends on set, bonding over things like being outsiders in the industry and—oh yeah—filming intimate scenes with Craig.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Interview Magazine (@interviewmag)

That’s right: Apollo’s going to be getting in on that action, too! When rumors began to swirl that the singer-songwriter had been spotted on the set of Queer , it was unclear whether he would just be making a cameo or his proper acting debut. But now we have confirmation that he’s leaving it all on screen.

While asking Starkey about his preparation for the role, Apollo shares that he, too, went on a strict “soup diet”:

“Luca did not tell me to lose weight,” he reveals, “but when you’re about to have a sex scene with Daniel Craig, you’re like, ‘Oh, dude, I can’t be looking off.'”

Related* Omar Apollo’s sultry tour outfits have a mission of their own: “We want to gag the girls” Omar Apollo is flaunting some fierce body-barring looks on his God Said No World Tour.

Sure, one can understand being nervous about sharing scenes with the man who can rock tiny blue swim trunks like no other , though Apollo maintains it was mostly about being loyal to Burroughs’ original words, making sure he matched his character’s description:

“I lost 20 pounds because I read in the script that my character had a flat brown stomach,” he tells Starkey. “I was like, ‘Damn, I’m actually not flat right now.’ I had to get it together, and I was on tour with SZA. Luckily, I didn’t have that many lines.”

Not only is there minimal dialogue for Apollo, but apparently minimal wardrobe, too. During the Venice press conference for Queer , New York Times reporter Kyle Buchanan snapped a pic of the star, adding he’s “nude for most of his screen time” in the film. Now this is journalism!

Luca Guadagnino dismisses question about “gay James Bond”

At the same conference, Craig was of course asked about the film’s many, many intimate moments, offering up a perfectly professional response:

“You know as well as I do, there’s nothing intimate about filming a sex scene on a movie set. There’s a room full of people watching you,” Craig said, per Variety . “We just wanted to make it as touching and as real and as natural as we possibly could. Drew is a wonderful, fantastic, beautiful actor to work with and we kind of had a laugh. We tried to make it fun.”

Speaking of fun, Guadagnino’s response to another prying question from press is already garnering quite a bit of attention…

A "gay James Bond?"? Daniel Craig rolled his eyes and "Queer" director Luca Guadagnino had a wry reply to a question about the super spy's sexuality at the Venice Film Festival. pic.twitter.com/N9dz0wBAek — AP Entertainment (@APEntertainment) September 3, 2024

When asked if there could ever be a “gay James Bond”—referring to the actor’s famous former role—Craig seems a bit flustered and rolls his eyes, but his director steps in to shut down the silly speculation:

“Guys, let’s be adult[s] in the room for a second,” Guadagnino says to some laughter and light applause. “There is no way around the fact that nobody would ever know James Bond’s desires, period. The important thing is that he does his missions properly.”

We’re sure that won’t stop people from wondering about 007’s sexuality, but maybe they’ll stop asking Daniel Craig about it. Besides, the man’s busy playing another sleuth, Knives Out ‘s Benoit Blanc, these days—and if early reactions to Queer are any indication, he’s got a brand new role for audiences to obsess over…

Early reactions to “erotic & sorrowful” Queer are here

On Tuesday, September 3, the review embargo lifted on Guadagnino’s latest, and reactions have come rolling in, with top critics—like Variety ‘s Owen Gleiberman —hailing it as a “bold and trippy odyssey.”

Vanity Fair ‘s Richard Lawson warns that Queer may alienate certain audiences, but praises the drama as both “erotic and sorrowful,” exploring “ruinous” sexual and romantic obsession.

He adds that the dynamic between Craig and Starkey’s character “is exactingly realized in the film, familiar to anyone who has contradictorily sought both affection and rejection from a person whose whims and attractions are mercurial.” Oof, sounds painful (in a good way).

Meanwhile, Indiewire ‘s Ryan Lattanzio calls attention to Guadagnino’s “feverishly charged, sensually filmed encounters,” which he claims are “the most explicit gay sex scenes I can remember in any mainstream movie.”

He also notes two instances where, during sex scenes, the director’s camera pans to a window, away from the action, “only to cut back to the lovers to find them going at it even harder than before.”

It would appear this is Guadagnino trolling the very same audiences who criticized him for avoiding intimate moments in his previous gay romance, Call Me By Your Name , which memorably panned to an open window during a scene where Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer ‘s characters start to get more hot & heavy. This man is getting pretty good at silencing the haters!

Currently, Queer sits at a “Fresh” 80% approval rating on review aggregator site RottenTomatoes , and features a wide range of ratings on the film-centric social media platform Letterboxd, likely averaging around 3.5/5 stars.

Of course, it only just premiered, so more reaction and hot takes are sure to come, including at the the New York Film Festival, where the film will make its American premiere on October 6. Last week, famed indie studio A24 picked the film up for U.S. distribution, though no theatrical release date has been announced yet.

In the meantime, there are plenty more reactions to the film on X, so check out some highlights below:

QUEER takes sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll to a whole new level. Full of steamy love scenes and an audacious vision, but one that'll be extremely divisive. PGA Tour veteran reveals how many times he’s seen fellow players drink during tournament rounds

1343018641

Mike Ehrmann

For the average golfer, one or two drinks over the course of 18 holes isn’t a big deal. That statement comes with a lot of asterisks, but as long as you’re practicing moderation, minding your manners and sobering up before you drive home, it’s nobody’s business but your own.

For PGA Tour pros, however, it’s another story.

As professional athletes, tour ambassadors and role models for thousands of kids, PGA Tour pros are prohibited from drinking alcohol on the clock. According to nine-year veteran Michael Kim, however, some have been known to bend the rules. But they're not drinking to celebrate like us desk jockeys sneaking a happy-hour beer out of the office fridge—they’re drinking to drown their golf sorrows.

RELATED: New study determines which state’s golfers drink the most and the answer is the most obvious thing ever

Two times in almost 10 seasons on tour is not exactly a trend, but still, it’s hard to imagine pros taking pulls mid-round with national TV cameras and armchair golf cops analyzing every blade of grass and every grain of bunker sand. Far more understandable, though, is the urge to dull the pain of a bad round with the pain of a bad hangover. Usually, it’s best to wait until the 19th hole to begin that healing process, but sometimes it’s going so bad you have to get a head start.

Many in the comments were eager to guess the pros Kim was referencing—you probably have some hunches of your own—but to Kim’s credit, he didn’t name names. We’re not condoning this behavior, but it’s probably good that Kim kept his lips sealed. Bygones are bygones and nobody likes a narc.

N.Y. Official Charged With Taking Money, Travel and Poultry to Aid China

Linda Sun, who worked for both Gov. Kathy Hochul and Gov. Andrew Cuomo, was accused of using her position to benefit the Chinese government.

A group of people walking outside of a court building.

By Hurubie Meko and William K. Rashbaum

In July 2021, six Nanjing-style salted ducks, prepared by a Chinese consulate official’s private chef, were delivered to the parents of an aide to New York’s then governor, Andrew M. Cuomo. About four months later, another six ducks arrived at their home. Another four months later, there were more salted ducks. Eight months after that: still more salted ducks.

Prosecutors say that the poultry shipments, described in a federal indictment unsealed Tuesday, were just a small part of a yearslong series of payoffs to the aide, Linda Sun , in exchange for actions that benefited the People’s Republic of China and its Communist Party. The 65-page indictment also described travel benefits, event tickets and the promotion of a close friend’s freight business with a headquarters in Queens.

Prosecutors say that Ms. Sun blocked Taiwanese officials from having access to the governor’s office, eliminated references to Taiwan from state communications and quashed meetings between Taiwanese officials and state leaders, including Gov. Kathy Hochul, who succeeded Mr. Cuomo and who promoted Ms. Sun to deputy chief of staff.

She also ensured that state officials did not publicly address the persecution of Uyghurs, a primarily Muslim ethnic group that for more than a thousand years has lived in a region of what is now China, prosecutors said.

Ms. Sun, 40, was charged on Tuesday with 10 criminal counts that included visa fraud, money laundering and other crimes. Her husband, Chris Hu, 41, a businessman, is charged in the indictment with money laundering.

Both pleaded not guilty in federal court, were released on bond and were required to surrender their passports.

Linda Sun’s lawyer, Jarrod Schaeffer, said that Ms. Sun was looking forward to addressing the indictment in court. “Our client is understandably upset that these charges have been brought,” Mr. Schaeffer said.

The accusations, if true, would represent a brazen manipulation of New York State government at the highest level, covering several years of the administrations of Ms. Hochul and Mr. Cuomo, both Democrats.

Avi Small, the press secretary for Ms. Hochul, said that Ms. Sun “was hired by the executive chamber more than a decade ago,” adding that Hochul administration officials “immediately reported her actions to law enforcement and have assisted law enforcement throughout this process.”

He said that the administration “terminated her employment in March 2023 after discovering evidence of misconduct.”

The charges are the latest in the Justice Department’s initiative — driven especially in recent years by the U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn — to stop efforts by the Chinese government to wield its influence secretly across the United States.

Last month, Shujun Wang, 75, a Queens man who billed himself as a democracy activist and scholar , was convicted in Brooklyn federal court of acting as a spy for the Chinese Communist Party. Last summer, prosecutors won a case in the same court against three men who stalked a family in New Jersey on behalf of the Chinese government . In another case, two men were accused of running a secret police station for China in a Lower Manhattan building.

The push by prosecutors comes as escalating tensions between the United States and China over wars, trade and technology have damaged their diplomatic relationship. China’s claims over portions of the South China Sea and the island of Taiwan have been bitterly disputed and were at the center of the allegations against Ms. Sun on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy, Liu Pengyu, said in a statement that he was not aware of the specific details of the case. He added: “But in recent years, the U.S. government and media have frequently hyped up the so-called ‘Chinese agents’ narratives, many of which have later been proven untrue. China requires its citizens overseas to comply with the laws and regulations of the host country, and we firmly oppose the groundlessly slandering and smearing targeting China.”

Ms. Sun served as a deputy chief of staff to Ms. Hochul after holding a series of state government positions. In those jobs, according to the indictment, she used her sway to steer state officials away from actions that could have implied support for Taiwan. Nationalists established their own government on the island in 1949 after a civil war, and the People’s Republic of China has laid claim to it ever since.

“No meeting please,” she wrote to an Assembly member who had invited the governor to meet with the ambassador of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office. “Kindly decline. Do not want her to wade into this China/Taiwan sensitivity.”

Prosecutors also accused Ms. Sun of providing unauthorized invitation letters from the governor’s office to make it easier for Chinese government officials to travel to the United States and meet with state officials in New York.

She even arranged, without proper authorization, for Chinese government officials to receive official proclamations, formal framed documents that bear the state seal and the governor’s signature. While these declarations hold little real meaning, some foreign officials hold them in high esteem.

In 2019, Tsai Ing-wen, who was then president of Taiwan, stopped in New York City during a visit to the United States . The Chinese government was opposed to Ms. Tsai’s visit, even asking the United States government not to permit it.

Taiwanese officials invited Ms. Sun and Mr. Cuomo to a banquet, prosecutors said. However, Ms. Sun never forwarded the invitation and instead told the Taiwanese officials that Mr. Cuomo was hosting an activity day for staff members in the Catskills.

“I already blocked it,” Ms. Sun wrote to a Chinese government official, according to the indictment.

On the day of the banquet, Ms. Sun joined leaders of local Chinese associations in a protest in Manhattan against Ms. Tsai, according to prosecutors.

In 2021, federal prosecutors said, Ms. Sun allowed a Chinese government official to “shape the content” of public remarks by Ms. Hochul and ensured that she “did not publicly address the detention of Uyghurs in PRC state-run camps in Xinjiang Province.”

Among the benefits Ms. Sun received, according to the indictment, were the assistance with millions of dollars in transactions for China-based businesses tied to Mr. Hu; travel benefits; tickets to events such as a performance by the Chinese National Traditional Orchestra at Carnegie Hall; the promotion of the Queens freight business; and employment for Ms. Sun’s cousin in China.

Prosecutors say Ms. Sun and Mr. Hu laundered the money they received to buy, among other things, their $3.6 million, five-bedroom home on a cul-de-sac in Manhasset, on the North Shore of Long Island; a $1.9 million condominium in Honolulu; and luxury cars, including a 2024 Ferrari.

Six weeks ago, F.B.I. agents descended on the cul-de-sac in Manhasset and searched the couple’s house in an early-morning raid.

The indictment accuses Ms. Sun of failing to disclose benefits from the Chinese government or the Chinese Communist Party to the government in New York, as she was required to do under law.

Ms. Sun worked in state government for nearly 14 years, holding a variety of positions in the administrations of Mr. Cuomo and Ms. Hochul, according to her LinkedIn profile. She began in the legislative branch, working as chief of staff to an assemblywoman, Grace Meng, who is now a congresswoman.

Robert G. Ortt, the Senate Republican leader, said Tuesday that Ms. Sun’s employment had been “an alarming security failure” and asked for an investigation to establish who should be held accountable.

Richard Azzopardi, a spokesman for Mr. Cuomo, said Ms. Sun had held only minor positions when Mr. Cuomo was governor. “While Ms. Sun was promoted to deputy chief of staff in the subsequent administration, during our time she worked in a handful of agencies and was one of many community liaisons who had little to no interaction with the governor,” he said.

Ms. Sun held jobs focused on business development, Asian American affairs and diversity, equity and inclusion. She left Ms. Hochul’s executive chamber after roughly 15 months, moving on to a position at the New York Department of Labor in November 2022. Five months later, she left to serve as campaign manager for Austin Cheng, a Democrat who unsuccessfully ran for a congressional seat on Long Island.

Even after Ms. Sun was let go by the Labor Department in March 2023, she continued to attend public and professional Asian community events, falsely claiming to be the department’s deputy commissioner, according to the indictment. Ms. Sun apparently stopped doing so after receiving a cease-and-desist letter from the Labor Department that August.

Ms. Sun’s husband, Mr. Hu, operates a liquor store in Flushing, Queens, called Leivine Wine & Spirits. Over the past decade, he has incorporated several other businesses, including a company he created in 2020 during the early days of the pandemic called Medical Supplies USA. He also created two other businesses, Golden Capital Group in 2016 and LCA Holdings in 2023, the nature of which could not be determined.

Outside Brooklyn federal court on Tuesday, lawyers for Ms. Sun and Mr. Hu addressed a pool of reporters, saying that they had confidence in the strength of the defense case.

“A number of the allegations in the indictment are, frankly, inflammatory, perplexing,” said Seth DuCharme, who represents Mr. Hu.

During the hearing, prosecutors described what they said was a complex set of evidence, much of it in Mandarin. Alex Solomon, an assistant U.S. attorney, said the couple “operated a multitude of shell entities,” including “more than 80 different accounts.”

“This is no ordinary financial fraud,” Mr. Solomon said.

Benjamin Oreskes , Jay Root and Olivia Bensimon contributed reporting.

An earlier version of this article misspelled the name of Linda Sun’s lawyer. It is Jarrod Schaeffer, not Jerrod Schaeffer.

An earlier version of this article misstated who was New York governor when salted ducks were delivered to the parents of an aide to the governor. It was Andrew M. Cuomo, not Kathy Hochul; Ms. Hochul became governor the following month.
