30 Best All-Inclusive Resorts for Families to Visit Right Now

There's something for everyone at these top-rated, kid-friendly retreats, chosen by real families and travel experts.

preview for 7 Summer Vacation Ideas The Whole Family Will Love

All-inclusive resorts allow you to be the "yes" parent on vacation. Ice cream? Sure. A trip to the arcade? Have fun. Snorkeling? Let's do it! By not worrying about how much everything costs, you can let your heart (rather than your wallet) guide your family experiences. The "one-price" vacation also eliminates awkward moments if you're traveling with extended family or friends. You don't have to divide checks, and it's easy to split up for parts of the day so everyone can try their favorite activities. In fact, a recent survey by the Family Travel Association found that nearly 20% of multigenerational groups are eyeing an all-inclusive resort for their next trip.

The bulk of the resorts on this list have been vetted by our expert Good Housekeeping Institute team and several have won a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Award . Search for your crew's next vacation now! It'll feel so good to get away.

Hotel Xcaret México, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

the pool and balconies at hotel xcaret mexico, a good housekeeping pick for best all inclusive family resorts

Adventurous families will have the time of their lives at the 900-suite Hotel Xcaret México , winner of a 2024 Good Housekeeping Family Travel Award . Besides having an incredible pool area on the sprawling grounds, the resort provides admission and transportation to any of the brand's eight adventure parks.

The nearby parks specialize in bucket-list experiences. At Xplor, for instance, your crew can zipline in a jungle, raft through an ancient cave and swim in an underground river that leads to a waterfall. "The resort is an especially great vacation spot for a family with elementary school-age kids and up," said our tester.

But if you do have a baby or toddler, the brand steps up to provide gear, so you don't have to bring or rent any. You're welcome to borrow a huge array of baby equipment, including bathtubs, bottle warmers and even strollers that are specifically designed to go on the beach. Our mental load feels lighter already.

Franklyn D. Resort & Spa, Runaway Bay, Jamaica

an aerial view of the beach and franklyn d resort and spa, a good housekeeping pick for best all inclusive family resorts

The best thing about Franklyn D. Resort & Spa : Every family receives their own CPR-trained "Vacation Nanny" for about eight hours daily, from morning to late afternoon. They can take the kids to the pool, make sure they have lunch, put them down for naps and re-stock your fridge with snacks and beverages.

They could be an extra set of hands for you, or you could put them in charge and split off to go kayaking, book a spa treatment or read a book on the beach. All the accommodations are two-bedroom suites. While they're more practical than posh, not having to tip-toe around in the dark to avoid waking up a sleeping toddler more than makes up for the lack of 400-thread-count sheets.

Beaches Turks & Caicos, Providenciales, Turks & Caicos

the white sand beaches of beaches turks and caicos, a good housekeeping pick for best all inclusive family resorts

Beaches Turks & Caicos thinks of everything families need and want for the vacation of a lifetime. A variety of restaurants? Beaches boasts 20-plus choices. Fun supervised clubs? They provide programming for babies to teens and divide it by many age groups, so kids hang with other children within a year or two of their age. They even have a program for children with special needs. One-of-a-kind stuff that will blow your kids' minds? Toddlers and preschoolers can't get enough of the Sesame Street-themed programming, which includes baking with Cookie Monster and a dance party with Elmo. Older kids won't want to leave the fun slides, a lazy river and surf simulator at the pirate-themed water park.

"Our kids went to the pool's swim-up soda bar every single day," said our tester. And, for you, of course, there's the spa and a chance to sit by the pool or beach with a drink in one hand and a book in the other. Many rooms accommodate larger groups, so bring the grandparents or family friends. Said our tester: "Beaches Turks & Caicos has everything you could possibly want — including convenience. It's only 10 minutes from the airport."

The Tyler Place Family Resort, Highgate Springs, VT

a lineup of sailboats along a dock at the tyler place family resort, a good housekeeping pick for best all inclusive family resorts

Open from late May to early September, The Tyler Place Family Resort offers magical camp-like experiences for families with babies through high schoolers. With many repeat guests, the resort sells out quickly.

In the morning, kids and teens — divided into eight groups by age — participate in supervised nature-based activities on the lake, private shorefront or surrounding fields. Counselors take toddlers on nature walks, fishing for perch or to the playground while pre-teens go on mountain bike rides and navigate a ropes course. Meanwhile, you can actually drink your coffee in peace or enjoy a yoga class or tennis lesson.

In the afternoon, families come together for maple snow cones, arts and crafts, bike rides and so much more. Seventy-two cottages and suites come in a variety of sizes and configurations; the largest one, Farmhouse West, can sleep up to 10 guests.

Flathead Lake Lodge, Bigfork, MT

flathead lake lodge

If you think it's practically impossible to please every member of your extended family on a trip, you haven't been to Flathead Lake Lodge . The lakeside dude ranch truly appeals to all ages and interests because it has "everything you could dream of," according to a Good Housekeeping staffer who recently visited with her daughter, nephews and parents. “The food was delicious. The menu was very well-planned and smart. They obviously care deeply about what they serve. The staff was the nicest, most hospitable I can recall. Everyone was just so polite and so friendly and so helpful and so knowledgeable. Our group had the best time — even my dad who hates everything.”

Although Flathead Lake Lodge doesn't have an official kids' camp, the supervised kids' activities, broken down by age group, run from morning to night. Highlights for adults include mountain yoga, water sports, horseback riding and flower-arranging classes. While the lodge is open seasonally, from May to October, it's not too early to book your summer trip.

Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resort, Rivera Maya, Mexico

hilton tulum rivera maya all inclusive resort

If you want to sneak in a little history and culture along with your beach vacation, book a room at the Hilton Tulum Riviera Maya All-Inclusive Resort . Opened in 2022, the resort is located just 8 miles from Mayan ruins, a popular archaeological site. You can explore the area, and then head back to the resort for more cultural activities or hit the Family Zone, home of the kids' club, teen club, pool complex and playground. "The kids' and teen clubs both looked great," said a Good Housekeeping staffer who recently visited with her family. "While all the food was good and plentiful, we especially loved the Mexican restaurant."

C Lazy U Ranch, Granby, CO

c lazy u ranch

A dream come true for kids who are passionate about horses, C Lazy U Ranch — a GH Family Travel Award winner — fosters riding skills and independence for preschoolers to teens. From sunup to sundown, campers are busy with their supervised activities, so you can mountain bike, take a beehive tour and go horseback riding without the kids in tow. "It's a family trip with alone time for the parents," said a Good Housekeeping tester who recently visited with her husband and three daughters. Kids and adults even eat dinner separately — and that arrangement went over well with our tester's family. "The food is probably 50 percent of the reason people come here," said our tester. Absence makes the heart grow fonder because, at the end of the day, kids are excited to show off what they learned at camp. As our tester noted, "The kids' mini performances are beyond adorable."

Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya, Mexico

Four- to 12-year-olds can hang out at Club Nick while you sink into a Bali beach bed that has butler service. While the kids may just want Krabby Patties, you'll be well-fed thanks to the amazing dining experiences at Gourmet Village and culinary pop-ups. Tastefully themed guest rooms with splashes of orange come in a variety of sizes. Some first-floor rooms even have a small pool directly outside the hotel room door.

Woodloch Resort, Hawley, PA

For an easygoing vacation with throwback vibes in the best way possible, look no further than this four-season all-inclusive Pocono Mountains retreat, winner of a 2024 Good Housekeeping Family Travel Award.

"If you want the amenities of a hotel but the advantages of a lake house, Woodloch Resort is it," said our tester. Activities, from bumper cars to boat tours to baking contests, are designed to bring families together. Meals are thoughtfully organized: "You're assigned a table, and that's your table for the whole stay, so you just walk in and seat yourself when you're ready."

Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico

a family enjoys the pool and waterslide at the hyatt ziva los cabos, a good housekeeping pick for best all inclusive family resorts

Nestled between desert dunes and ocean rock formations, the Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos delights parents and kids alike. Little ones have their own water park with slides, a splash pool and a sandy playground. Adults are treated to a swim-up bar and state-of-the-art gym.

Mexican-inspired nightly entertainment, ranging from magic acts to tropical dance music performed by the resort band, entertains all ages. There's a wide selection of accommodations — the Ziva suite, in particular, is family-friendly with a separate sleeping space for the kids, two bathrooms and a prime location near the kids' club and water park.

Keep in mind that you can't swim on most beaches in Los Cabos, including this one, because of strong currants. But if your kids prefer the pool anyway, you probably won't miss it.

Windjammer Landing Villa Beach Resort, Labrelotte Bay, Saint Lucia

the beach and villas of the windjammer landing villa beach resort, a good housekeeping pick for best all inclusive family resorts

Tucked away on a lush mountainside overlooking a bay, the Windjammer Landing Villa Beach Resort will captivate your entire family. The calm and protected bay, perfect for kids to splash around, has sunbeds and in-water hammocks that make a beach day feel extra special.

Active families can take advantage of the beachfront volleyball net. At night, the resort's parrot mascot gathers families on the beach for storytelling. For an extra charge, the resort will deliver warm milk and cookies to the kids at turndown. Perfect for larger groups, Mediterranean-style, multi-bedroom villas are built into the hillside. A quick shuttle brings guests to the beach, six swimming pools and tennis courts.

You can also book a variety of off-property excursions. These aptly named "Jammin Tours" include a Rainforest Ariel Tram and Sunset Cruise.

Fort Young Hotel & Dive Resort, Dominica

fort young hotel and dive resort

The only all-inclusive on this small island in the eastern Caribbean wants your family to explore beyond the resort. Fort Young Hotel & Dive Resort 's "All-Inclusive, Island Included" package for stays of five nights or more covers the cost of excursions, such as a city walking tour and a guided hike to see the island's famous waterfalls. Situated on a historic site, the resort has lovingly refurbished 40 existing guest rooms and suites — and added 60 more. A rooftop wellness garden is in the works for 2024. While kids of all ages are welcome, the resort is best for tweens and teens who would be excited about the excursions. Visit between May and October when you might see three endangered sea turtle species swimming and nesting along the shoreline.

Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Cancun, Cancun, Mexico

the hotel, pool and beach at garza blanca resort and spa cancun, a good housekeeping pick for best all inclusive family resorts

This new oceanfront oasis on Playa Mujeres beach makes it more fun to travel with kids. Instead of lugging your own gear, Garza Blanca Resort & Spa has strollers, car seats, baby monitors and other necessities to borrow.

You'll find plush kid-size robes and slippers alongside the adult versions so you can match your mini-me. There's a ton to do as a family, like visit the water park, play tennis and take electric beach bike tours, but there is also a supervised club for kids ages 4 to 12 so you can take some much-needed R&R or head to the adult-only rooftop bar.

Multi-bedroom suites and residences that would be ideal for a family reunion are available. Complimentary souvenirs, like a Mexican coloring book and handmade toys, help kids remember the vacation. Big plus: kids eat and stay free!

Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, NY

the mohonk mountain house, a good housekeeping pick for best all inclusive family resorts, is nestled into the hills of the hudson valley in new york

Every season is fun for families at this historic Hudson Valley retreat, winner of a 2024 Good Housekeeping Family Travel Award. Our tester, who visited Mohonk Mountain House in August with her family, particularly enjoyed boating on the lake.

"We even did a few lunches by the water, which was a beautiful backdrop," she said. Other appealing summertime activities include archery, tomahawk-throwing and stand-up paddleboarding. In winter, snow tubing, ice skating and cross-country skiing will keep your crew entertained. Three meals, afternoon tea and cookies and most activities are included in the price.

The service is top-notch: "The staff was incredibly accommodating, knowledgeable and kind," our tester said. "They recognize that they are a family destination and are very prepared to cater to and handle kids. Even when things went a bit amok, I never felt like I had to be apologetic for it."

Villa La Valencia Beach Resort & Spa, Los Cabos, Mexico

villa la valencia beach resort spa los cabos

The newish Villa La Valencia Beach Resort & Spa boasts the area's longest lazy river and has a stunning infinity pool that overlooks the ocean. The kids' club offers an array of unexpected activities from Mini Zumba to Mexican Loteria. For adults, cooking classes, tequila tastings and salsa dance lessons are part of the fun. All accommodations are one- to four-bedroom suites. While the beach at this resort is fantastic for long walks, like many Los Cabos beaches, swimming isn't possible because of the strong rip current.

Club Med Québec-Charlevoix, Petite-Riviere-Saint-Francois, Canada

a wintry view of the club med québec charlevoix, a good housekeeping pick for best all inclusive family resorts

Club Med Québec-Charlevoix sprinkles more magic into a ski trip for families. Nestled between a mountain and river, the all-inclusive provides ski-in and ski-out access to the slopes and delivers gear to your on-site snow locker. Group skiing lessons for ages 4 and up and snowboard lessons for ages 8 and up are included in the price; mini skiers are paired up with other kids at their level. Adults can take lessons too! Family rooms have separate kid and adult sleeping spaces.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

An all-inclusive that welcomes rockers of all ages, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana encourages families to choose one of two experiences at its music lab: Your crew could star in a music video or play in a jam band in front of a live audience. A Rock Specialist will get you ready!

The new Roxity Kids Club is groovin' too: Dance lessons, karaoke and other music-themed activities are part of the action for 4- to 12-year-olds. Tunes play at the resort's huge array of pools — hit up the family pool for teen-friendly music. Family suites sleep up to six, and you can even request to have a turntable and 10 iconic records brought to your room. That's music to our ears! EXPLORE NOW

Hilton Cancun, an All Inclusive Resort, Cancun, Mexico

the hotel is reflected into the waters of the pool at the hilton cancun, a good housekeeping pick for best all inclusive family resorts

On a secluded stretch of the Mayan coastline, Hilton Cancun, an All Inclusive Resort , leans into local culture and food. A two-time Good Housekeeping Family Travel Award winner, the newish resort has 12 places to eat, including the Mexican restaurant Maxal.

"I would have come here for every meal," said our tester. "It had tons of regional dishes and during the day, it turns into a taquería with delicious offerings." Nightly happenings, like a culturally immersive Fiesta Show, entertain families.

But if you wanted to drop off 4- to 12-year-olds at the kids' club, that works too. Themed parties, glow-in-the-dark games and even a mini disco keep the kids happy before bedtime. It's just one of the ways "this resort really does a great job to accommodate everyone."

Castle Hot Springs, Morristown, AZ

a fire pit looks cozy in front of a cabin on a rocky hill at castle hot springs, a good housekeeping pick for best all inclusive family resorts

A unique choice for older teens and multigenerational groups, a stay at Castle Hot Springs will revitalize your family — and land you lots of bonding time. This wellness resort for guests ages 16 and up includes a robust lineup of adventurous experiences in the heart of the Sonoran Desert mixed with mindfulness offerings and, the pièce de résistance, soaking in the natural geothermal hot springs.

Guided canyon hikes, archery lessons, classes to make sun prints and body scrubs and even paddleboard yoga are among the standout offerings. Farm-t0-table meals refuel you after a busy (but wonderful) day. Bungalows, cabins and cottages all have thoughtful details. For instance, sky-view cabins provide a telescope on the deck. Truly five-star!

Migis Lodge, South Casco, ME

a dock extends into a lake at migis lodge, a good housekeeping pick for best all inclusive family resorts

For a classic New England vacation, rent a lakeside cottage at Migis Lodge , an all-inclusive retreat on Sebago Lake about 40 minutes northwest of Portland.

Take the kids canoeing or fishing, or simply soak up the peaceful lake vistas from your porch. Camps for kids ages 4 and up lean into nostalgic fun like fairy housebuilding and talent shows for little ones and games like capture the flag for tweens. There's a special family dining room where young kids can roam around.

At dinner, parents are welcome to eat at their leisure while kids enjoy a fun supervised meal and playtime. The lodge's menu changes daily, but it always includes fresh Maine lobster. EXPLORE NOW

Just for families

The clue’s in the title. These trips are for families only (including any aunts, uncles or cousins who’d like to come along, of course). As long as you’re traveling with a child under the age of 18, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, unlike other travel companies, children aged 17 years and younger receive a 10% discount on the price of their trip.

Travel with other families

Traveling the Intrepid way is a bit like traveling with a group of friends. These trips are made up of 3–5 like-minded families, and the kids tend to hit it off straight away, allowing you to enjoy some well-earned R&R. We often find the whole family ends up making friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.

Small group sizes

Intrepid’s family group sizes are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach some out-of-the-way places but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.

Action packed

We know the biggest challenge on a family trip is keeping the kids entertained, so we’ve planned in advance. Nearly all of our hotels feature pools, and each day has a great mix of action-packed adventure and flexible free time. Your local leader can also suggest activities based on your kid’s hobbies or school curriculum.

A young girl holding up a piece of pizza in Italy with her mouth open

If there’s a destination fit for family travel, it’s Italy – think pizza and gelato making in Sorrento, scialatielli tasting (fresh pasta) in Minori, and history lessons about Mt Vesuvius while looking at the volcano itself. Packed with food and local artisan experiences, you and your kids will get a real taste of Italy while also getting the chance to appreciate the country’s breathtaking coastal scenery and learn about its captivating past.

Where we stay

We take a lot of care in choosing your accommodation and try to avoid the big chain hotels. Your accommodation could be a locally run hotel in Europe, a jungle lodge in Latin America, or a small, family-friendly hotel. No matter where you stay, it will be of good quality and most rooms will feature en suite bathrooms and air conditioning as standard. We also prefer hotels that provide triple or quad rooms and always try to offer adjoining rooms for parents and kids when they are available.

19 Best All-inclusive Resorts for Families

From dude ranches in the U.S. to beachfront properties in the Caribbean and Mexico, these are the best all-inclusive resorts for families around the world.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

tours hotels for families

Vacations are meant to take you away from the demands of daily life so you can relax and reset — but that's almost impossible when the kids are begging for an expensive excursion and you're already over budget.

If you want a truly carefree vacation, it's best to pay upfront for an all-inclusive family resort so your crew can enjoy all the food, drinks, entertainment, and activities you want, worry free. At an all-inclusive resort, it won't matter if you order another round of drinks or your kids can't seem to get their fill of the water park — it's already been paid for. The result is less stress and more quality family time.

The best part is that all-inclusive family resorts can be found all over the world. Whether you picture your family sprawled out in a cabana on a white-sand beach or taking in the sunset by horseback under the big Montana sky, there's a top-notch all-inclusive resort waiting to welcome you.

To get you started, here are the best all-inclusive resorts for families from Kenya to Vermont to Turks and Caicos.

Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana, Dominican Republic

This all-inclusive resort  on the shores of Cap Cana's Juanillo Beach is a wonderful tropical getaway with incredible amenities. Kids will love the water park — complete with lazy river and slides — while adults can explore the resort's sprawling infinity pools and swim-up bars. Guests also have access to the adults-only Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana , the Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana's sibling property, making the resort perfect for groups with a range of ages and interests or multi-generational families.

"I was super impressed from the moment I entered the property's expansive lobby, with its lush greenery hanging overhead and bamboo lined ceilings," Brad Japhe , T+L contributor, said. "My suite was just as dazzling; sleekly appointed with local cultural accents, unobstructed in its seaside panorama. I enjoyed more of the same from the pools and hot tubs, seated at the edge of the playa. There are several dining options on property, including the beachside Chinola. I found the best dishes at El Mercado, where a daily buffet focuses on Caribbean flavors."

Included in one, flat all-inclusive rate is unlimited food and drink at the property's 13 venues (including top-shelf liquor and wine), all non-motorized water sports, and dedicated beach butlers ready to refill that cocktail or drop by another round of chips and salsa.

Bluefields Bay, Jamaica

This resort invites families to experience the island's less-visited South Coast. The all-inclusive property delivers spacious villa accommodations and plenty of family-friendly bonuses — like a 24-hour butler, a chef, and private pool and beach access. If that isn't enticing enough, what about up to nine hours of daily child or adult care? At Bluefields Bay , it's all included under the all-inclusive rate.

"First opened nearly 40 years ago by an American couple, the all-inclusive property features six luxury villas ranging from two to six bedrooms," Kristin Braswell , T+L contributor, reported after a stay with friends last year. "Much of the staff first hired decades ago still remains, a testament to the welcoming energy of the property. My group’s home was the four-bedroom Hermitage Villa, situated on a hilltop suspended over a jungly mountainside that framed the Caribbean Ocean below. Ahead of arrival, we were sent menu options for our stay what would be prepared by an in-villa chef. During our stay, we feasted on lionfish in curry sauce, citrusy ceviche, tender oxtails, plates of fiery jerk chicken by the pool, and of course, rum punch. Though we barely left our villa, below, a beachside staff was available to pour drinks, set up kayaking, paddleboarding, and other water sports, or just to share a little bit more about their beloved Jamaica."

T+L Backpack Quiz

Beaches turks and caicos, turks and caicos.

If you're looking for a beachy, Caribbean experience, head to this all-inclusive resort . Kids will be entertained for hours in the water park’s 650-foot lazy river, water cannons, and surfing simulator, while adults can enjoy resting along the 12-mile beach or in their private villa with butler service.

"My kids often ask when we will return to Beaches Turks & Caicos, a family favorite trip we took in April 2022," said Erinne Magee , a T+L contributor. "It’s no wonder they continue to relive our experience. With a mother-daughter scuba course, and Cookie Monster visiting our two-bedroom townhouse suite to wish our 5-year-old goodnight, the vacation was a dream."

Included in the rate is unlimited food and drinks (with snacks and premium liquor), a well-stocked mini bar, kids camp, airport transfers, and activities like PADI-Certified scuba diving and daily live entertainment. Plus, you can bundle your flights with your stay and save (they offer nonstop flights from major cities like New York, Boston, and Miami).

Magee noted that in addition to "bouncing between the waterpark, 10 pools, and the crystal-clear ocean, another highlight was volunteering with the property’s nonprofit, The Sandals Foundation, where our family of four visited a local elementary school to read books and interact with the kids."

C Lazy U Ranch, Colorado

This year-round resort in Colorado's Rocky Mountains has welcomed families to its dude-ranch style property for over 100 years. Here, you can escape the grind of daily life on a lengthy trail ride or hole up in your cozy cabin at the end of a long day under the bright Colorado sun.

Included in your stay at C Lazy U Ranch are three daily gourmet meals (think dry-aged ribeye, fresh trout, and homemade bread) and enough activities to make your head spin — you can join a trail ride, go fishing, visit the spa, or play tennis. In winter, activities like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating are added to the agenda.

Coconut Bay Beach Resort and Spa, St. Lucia

It doesn't matter if you imagine chasing your kids up and down endless water slides or relaxing in an adults-only oasis — you can have both at this two-in-one all-inclusive resort . The island's largest water park provides endless fun, while the adults-only wing delivers peace and quiet.

The property is located on 85 acres along St. Lucia's south coast and provides guests with all-inclusive access to the property's nine restaurants and seven bars (including top-shelf liquor), nightly entertainment, and activities that range from dance class and yoga to paintball and kayaking.

Woodloch Resort, Pennsylvania

Woodloch Resort

Consistently rated as one of America's top all-inclusive family resorts, this Poconos property has been family-owned since 1958. The all-season resort is nestled on a mountain lake, and delivers fun for the whole family — including more than 30 activities scheduled daily, a giant rock climbing wall, indoor and outdoor pools, water sports, and nightly entertainment.

Finding an affordable wellness retreat that will satisfy multiple people is no easy task, but when my three college friends and I decided to go away together a few years ago in the fall of 2019, this 59-room lodge which opened in 2006 in Hawley, Pennsylvania, fulfilled all our requirements," reported T+L contributor Devorah Lev-Tov . "We could’ve easily spent the whole weekend inside the 40,000-square foot spa complex, which boasts an indoor pool with a cascading waterfall, an outdoor infinity Jacuzzi, saunas, steam rooms, and a snow room, various relaxation lounges, and 27 treatment rooms that host therapies including facials, massages, scrubs, wraps, float therapy, reflexology, and reiki. Still, we also joined some of the wellness workshops, fitness classes (we will never forget trying the rope wall yoga class), and activities like hiking, archery, kayaking, and cooking demonstrations."

All bookings at the main Woodloch Resort include a daily meal plan, while guests staying at the Woodloch Springs campus can either dine around the area or add a meal plan onto their stay. Included in any Woodloch stay are daily excursions like snow tubing, fishing, water skiing, and boating.

Paradisus Playa del Carmen, Mexico

This family-friendly oasis is set in a protected mangrove forest right on Mexico's Caribbean Sea. The giant, all-inclusive property boasts 24 restaurants and bars (some for adults only) and a water park with multiple pools and slides. The littles can spend the day in the Kids Club — with workshops, activities, and crafts — while parents enjoy a spa treatment or take a dancing class.

Reservations at Paradisus Playa del Carmen include food, drinks, water sports, and entertainment, as well as activities like wine tastings and dance lessons for adults, and water park access for kids.

Mohonk Mountain House, New York

Courtesy of Mohonk Mountain House

If you — or your kids — have ever wanted to stay in a castle, this is the property that will make your dreams come true. Founded by the Smiley family in 1869, this iconic Victorian castle property welcomes families to enjoy its farm-to-table cuisine and the 40,000 acres of forest that surround it.

Every booking includes three meals a day (plus afternoon tea and cookies and a weekend brunch) and unlimited activities. In the winter, activity highlights include more than 30 miles of cross-country ski trails and ice skating in the open-air pavilion, while the warmer months are all about exploring Mohonk Lake by paddleboard or kayak.

Rancho de los Caballeros, Arizona

This dude ranch sits on 20,000 acres of Arizona desert with views of the Bradshaw Mountains. With a history that dates back to 1948, this stunning property brings families together through activities like horseback riding, tennis, and guided nature programs. There's also a Kids Club where anyone 5-12 can participate in daily crafts and activities.

Keep in mind that Rancho de los Caballeros isn't a one-size-fits-all destination — here, you can select the all-inclusive package that works for you. All bookings include three meals a day, but some packages come with perks like a round of golf or an activity credit you can redeem for a day of horseback riding, skeet shooting, or spa time.

The ranch is closed in the summer when the temperatures spike, but the golf course and spa are open year-round.

Tortuga Lodge and Gardens, Costa Rica

Everything about Tortuga Lodge and Gardens is designed to reflect the natural surroundings, so you won't find a blaring TV in your bedroom or background music in the lodge. The property sits on the Caribbean coastline in its own private nature reserve, making it a nature and adventure lover's dream destination.

The Full Board rate at Tortuga Lodge includes daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner (drinks are not included) at the highly regarded Green Turtle Restaurant. If you opt in for the Tortuguero Jungle Experience Package when booking, your stay includes daily a la carte breakfast, lunch, and dinner, roundtrip boat transportation from La Pavona or Caño Blanco, and two special experiences — think boat and kayak tours, hiking trips, or a twilight tour of the private reserve.

Sandos Finisterra Los Cabos, Mexico

Just because a property is dubbed family friendly doesn't mean it can't be modern and chic. At Sandos Finisterra , you can kick back in the luxurious spa, put up your feet on your private balcony or terrace, or enjoy a meal at one of the three on-site restaurants. All meals and drinks are included, as is the kids club and live entertainment.

Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach, The Bahamas

Nestled on the south shore of Grand Bahama Island is the Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach . In addition to 26 acres of wild nature, the all-inclusive resort has plenty of activities for the whole family, including kayaking, snorkeling, and a robust kids club. The inclusive rate also includes food and drink, entertainment, and nightly accommodations (each with its own balcony or terrace).

Moon Palace Cancun, Mexico

Moon Palace 's elevated take on an all-inclusive offering includes 24-hour room service, top-shelf drinks, fine dining, in-room whirlpool tubs, and plenty of kid-friendly activities (for the latter, don't miss the FlowRider Double surf simulator).

The resort is split into two sides — the Nizuc side offers a more tranquil feel and the Sunrise side scratches that active, lively itch. Either way, you'll have access to the entire property so you can hop around depending on your mood.

The Ranch at Rock Creek, Montana

This upscale, all-inclusive property in Montana delivers an authentic western feel with five-star amenities. You can book a stay in a suite, luxury home, converted barn, or sleep nestled under the stars in a high-end cabin. The all-inclusive nightly rate includes farm-to-table meals, drinks, airport transfers, and two daily activities on the property's 6,600 spacious acres. Activity offerings include guided fly fishing, horseback riding, shooting sports, and sapphire mining.

Lewa Safari Camp, Kenya

The Kenyan property where William and Kate stayed before he proposed treats every visitor to the all-inclusive resort like royalty. Guests stay in large tented bedrooms with verandas and en-suite bathrooms, and have access to 65,000 acres of private protected wilderness that's home to lions, leopards, zebras, and black and white rhinos.

All meals and drinks (excluding Champagne, private cellar wines, and premium spirits) are covered in the all-inclusive rate, while the Game Package also includes scheduled game drives, guided walking safaris, and airport transfers.

These 10 hotels have incredible suites that will wow the whole family

More space, cool theming, gorgeous views — living the suite life while traveling definitely has its perks. Yes, booking a suite is usually a splurge, but when you stay at a hotel or resort with an over-the-top family suite, all that extra space can turn a regular getaway into a special family vacation no one will ever forget.

Another major plus with a family suite? The grownups can get some separation from the kiddos, which works well when little ones have early bedtimes, or when everyone in the family just needs a little space after a long day. Some suites even have more than one bathroom, cutting down on squabbles and wait times for teeth brushing and showers.

Grand Wailea Maui

Grand Wailea Maui is one of Hilton's most luxurious resorts in Hawaii, especially with its beachfront location and amazing pools (there are nine of them). Honeymooners flock to this resort, but it's also a great family destination. The hotel offers many on-site activities, such as a program where first-time divers (ages 12+) can receive complimentary scuba training. There are also kayak and paddleboard rentals, along with a monthly schedule with activities such as luaus, yoga classes, Hawaiian games and hula lessons. (Note that although the Grand Wailea is popular with families for its extensive kids and teen clubs, those are currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.)

tours hotels for families

The Grand Wailea Maui costs 95,000 Hilton points a night for a standard room, although those are incredibly hard to come by. This is why you'll want to plan your trip far in advance and ensure you are flexible with dates. But, if you are able to find a standard room available, it makes it a valuable use of free weekend night certificates . You can earn these certificates in a couple of different ways:

  • Anniversary Year : The Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express will give you a free night certificate every time you renew your account.
  • Annual Spend : The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass Card gives you a free night annually if you spend $15,000 on the card within the calendar year. The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card allows you to earn up to two free nights per year — one free night after you spend $15,000 on the card within the calendar year and then another free night after you spend $60,000 on the card within the calendar year. The Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express allows you to earn a second free-night certificate after you spend $60,000 on the card within the calendar year.

If Hawaii is on your radar, you can do a full island-hopping tour with Hilton hotels. Other family-friendly properties include Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort (60,000 points/night) and Hilton Waikoloa Village (65,000 points/night).

Hilton Phoenix Resort at the Peak

Arizona is filled with resorts that range from adults-only spas to family-oriented properties with massive pools and lazy rivers. The all-suite Hilton Phoenix Resort at the Peak definitely works for families. This resort requires between 50,000 to 60,000 Hilton points per night. And even their standard rooms are suites, allowing your family (up to five guests) to spread out for no additional expense.

The Hilton Phoenix Resort at the Peak features the four-acre River Ranch Water Park with pools, waterslides and a lazy river. There are also tennis courts, basketball courts and mini-golf. (Note, during non-pandemic times, kids four to 12-year-olds can participate in programs at Coyote Camp, which is currently closed.)

Madison Beach Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton, Connecticut

Finding a chain resort in the Northeast is challenging, but your family can vacation on the Connecticut shoreline using Hilton points at the Madison Beach Hotel. Just make sure to book far ahead, as rooms sell out early during the peak periods of summer and fall.

When the weather is good, your kids can play at the beach during the day and make s'mores at the fire pit in the evenings. There is also biking, kayaking, fishing and bird-watching. At 61,000 to 80,000 Hilton Honors points a night, this can be a great New England option.

Signia by Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek

If Mickey and Minnie are in your family's plans, the Signia by Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek is just a few miles from the Disney theme parks. Here you will receive benefits such as a 30-minute head start at Disney World and complimentary transportation to the park.

For non-park days, the Signia by Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek has a lagoon-style pool, and a waterslide and poolside activities. During non-pandemic times, there's also a kids club at the adjacent Waldorf Astoria hotel (the kids club is currently closed due to pandemic restrictions).

The Signia by Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek requires costs 60,000 Hilton Honors points a night for a standard night, however, many times there are only premium rooms available. There are other Hilton properties in the area that might cost less; look into the Hilton Disney Springs properties if your points budget is tight.

Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, Florida

The Florida panhandle has beautiful beaches and is a popular family vacation spot. If you are looking for a full-service hotel on the beach with many kid's activities, the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa has you covered at 64,000 to 80,000 points a night. Or, if you are looking to splurge, you can redeem even more points to stay in a suite that offers bunk beds — the perfect solution when traveling with kids.

Here you'll find indoor and outdoor pools, beach volleyball, bike riding, tennis, golf, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking. And of course, there's the beach.

The Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton Hotel

Huntington Beach, also known as "Surf City," lies just 35 miles southeast of Los Angeles. On its 9.5-mile beach is The Waterfront Beach Resort , which costs 80,000 points a night. This is the perfect resort to turn into a California coast road trip or to tack onto a Disneyland vacation. Note: The hotel is across the highway and not on the beachfront.

tours hotels for families

The Waterfront Beach Resort is steps away from the beach and many restaurants but secluded in a beautiful, resort-style property. There is a pool with waterslides, cabanas for rent and fire pits in the evening. You can rent boogie boards, sand toys, beach chairs and umbrellas, tandem bikes, beach cruisers and more. Unfortunately, though, the property no longer has a kids club at the resort.

Hilton Barbados Resort

Barbados is an awesome vacation for families. Although there is a limited number of chain resorts on the island, there are actually two opportunities to use your Hilton points. The first, the Hilton Barbados Resort is located right in Bridgetown. (Note: This is not the right location if you like to be off the beaten path.)

With access to a white-sand beach and a pool, the hotel offers snorkeling gear, kayaks and boogie boards. The Kidz complimentary Paradise Club is open between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. The kids are divided into two age groups: The Groovy Kidz are children between four and seven years old and the Cool Kidz are children between eight and 12 years old. At the hotel, children under five eat for free and children between five and 12 receive all meals at half price.

tours hotels for families

This is by no means the fanciest hotel in Barbados, but it is a great opportunity to use your points on an island where hotels can be quite expensive. The Hilton Barbados Resort costs 59,000 to 70,000 points a night.

If you have a healthy point balance, Hilton recently took over The Crane Resort as one of its vacation properties. (The Crane also has a kids club for four to 12-year-olds and is complimentary). The Hilton Grand Vacations at The Crane starts at 113,000 points per night since you can only book premium rooms. The Crane is definitely a nicer property if you have the luxury of choice. Or, if you are visiting during an off-peak time you might find that the paid rate is a similar price and worth paying for instead of using points.

Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa

The all-inclusive Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa in Jamaica has a private beach, multiple pools and the Super Mill Falls Water Park. While it is no longer the only waterpark in the Caribbean where you can use points, your kids will still love the 280-foot slide and the lazy river.

The room rates include multiple dining options, drinks at the swim-up bar, non-motorized water sports and, of course, a kids club.

tours hotels for families

A standard room at this property costs between 65,000 and 70,000 points for two guests with a surcharge for additional guests. Children five and under stay for free, but you'll want to speak to Hilton or the hotel directly to determine the extra cost as the pricing does change and depends on the age of the guest.

Hilton Aruba Caribbean

Aruba is one of my family's favorite beach destinations. The weather is usually near-perfect, the water is crystal-clear, there are a ton of activities and the restaurants are solid. In the hotel zone, you'll find many points-friendly options, including the Hilton Aruba Caribbean.

It boasts two large "zero-entry pools" (they slope gradually into the water, like a beach, which can be ideal for kids) that stay open until 10 p.m. This allows kids to splash around right up to bedtime and gives families something to do in the evening.

tours hotels for families

The Shoco Land Kids Club is currently closed, but when open is available for kids between four and 12 years old.

Standard rooms at this property will cost you 80,000 points a night all year-round.

Hilton Cancun, an All-Inclusive Resort

The Hilton Cancun just had its grand opening in November 2021, which now makes this another great place to use your Hilton Honors points — especially if you prefer the all-inclusive experience. Located in the Riviera Maya area, you're right on the water and still close by to Cancun International Airport (CUN).

There are a plethora of activities for kids, including kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling, a water playground with slides and nightly shows.

Kids between the ages of four and 12 can also enjoy the Kids Club. While the fixed building that houses the kids club is not yet up and running, there's a temporary space that is being used to offer many fun activities, such as arts and crafts, gaming stations and more.

tours hotels for families

A free night award only costs 95,000 points a night and kids under 12 stay for free. This is another great opportunity to redeem one of your free night awards that come with one of Hilton's co-branded credit card.

Conrad Bora Bora Nui

Farther away than all the other properties mentioned here, the Conrad Bora Bora Nui is special. What is so great about this property for families is that you can spend 89,000 points a night and stay in a suite of more than 1,000 square feet. If you want to stay over water that will cost you more, but land rooms at this property are quite nice for a family of up to four.

The Conrad offers complimentary mini-golf, paddleboarding, kayaking or sailing. There is also the free Tamariki Kids' Club for kids between four and 14 years old.

Due to the incredibly expensive nightly rate, this is a great place to use your points for a free night stay. Unfortunately, though, availability for a standard room on points is extremely limited, but keep on checking the calendar daily to see if any rooms open up.

Bottom line

I love using Hilton Honors points to pay for my hotel stays, especially at resorts. If you use points, resort fees are waived and you'll receive your fifth night free if you have elite status . Fortunately, all four Hilton Honors credit cards come with either Silver, Gold or Diamond status. No matter which card you get, you'll automatically reap this benefit.

With more than 5,000 Hilton properties worldwide, there are endless options for family vacations on points. Which ones are your favorites?

King Charles Is Opening New Doors to Royal Palaces, Including Family's Summer Retreat, to Public for First Time

Visitors will be able to tour Balmoral Castle, where Queen Elizabeth died, and new nooks of Buckingham Palace, including the room that leads out to the iconic balcony

Janine Henni is a Royals Staff Writer for PEOPLE Digital, covering modern monarchies and the world's most famous families. Like Queen Elizabeth, she loves horses and a great tiara moment.

Balmoral Castle and Buckingham Palace are welcoming visitors in new ways.

It was revealed this week that both royal residences will welcome visitors into previously unseen spaces through ticketed tours this summer. In fact, Balmoral Castle in Scotland is opening "for the first time since the castle was completed in 1855," its website says.

Balmoral is famed as the royal family's cherished summer sanctuary in the Scottish Highlands, but it also holds sad memories for the group. Prince William  and  Prince Harry were spending time there in August 1997 when their mother, Princess Diana , tragically died in a car crash in Paris.

Queen Elizabeth , who her granddaughter  Princess Eugenie  once said was "most happy" at Balmoral, died there in 2022. Sources told PEOPLE at the time it was fitting she spend her last hours there because it was such a special place for her and her family — and now, the public can step into the castle in Aberdeenshire for themselves.

Keystone/Hulton Archive/Getty

The Castle Internal Guided Tours experience is touted as a "historical journey" through "several of the beautiful rooms," comprised of a private guide that talks visitors through its history from acquisition by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1845 to a peek at how King Charles , Queen Camilla and other royal family members continue to use the space today.

The royal family has previously permitted tours at Balmoral around the grounds and gardens, but access inside the castle was limited to the ballroom, making the Castle Internal Guided Tours the most intimate yet.

The tours are set to run from July 1 to August 4, capped at 10 people per session. The general guided excursion currently costs about $126 a person, while tickets with afternoon tea are about $189 — and are open to adults only.

While many of the internal Balmoral Castle tours have already sold out, there’s still plenty of availability for the Balmoral General Admission, featuring a trove of artwork by King Charles plus some royal fashion. The Ballroom promises "His Majesty The King's watercolor collection depicting scenery at Balmoral, Highgrove and Sandringham" and a "collection of outfits worn by Their Majesties King Charles and Queen Camilla, the late Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother."

While Buckingham Palace has been a popular stop for royal watchers since 1993 when Queen Elizabeth opened its gates as a fundraiser after a devastating fire ripped through Windsor Castle in 1992, new areas of the famous London residence will be available to tour for the first time this year.

The East Wing of Buckingham Palace, where the King filmed his Christmas broadcast in December 2023, will be toured for the first time come summer. On April 3, the Royal Collection Trust announced that the iconic palace will open the wing via the Principal Floor following five years of restorative work.

Jonathan Brady - WPA Pool /Getty

The East Wing includes the front façade and iconic palace balcony, "where the monarch and members of the royal family have gathered for public appearances during special occasions or historic moments since 1851," including royal weddings, coronations and Trooping the Colour, the annual celebration of the monarch's birthday.

The Royal Collection Trust said that the royal family still uses the wing today for official meetings and events.

Royal watchers can save the date for East Wing Highlights Tours held daily in July and August starting July 15, booked in addition to standard admission to the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace.

The palace will be open seven days a week in July and August for the first time since 2019 before scaling back to five days a week in September.

While Buckingham Palace is synonymous with the British royals and serves as the hub of the monarchy’s operations, King Charles and Queen Camilla don’t actually live there! The palace is in the middle of a $460 million renovation reportedly not due to be complete until 2027 .

Stuart C. Wilson/Getty

As King Charles, 75, invites the public into new nooks for the first time this summer, The Times cited royal biographer Robert Hardman’s prediction that the King would open up Balmoral during his reign.

"Balmoral is private property. However, it needs public footfall not just to help pay the bills but to bring benefits to the wider community and to remain in step with other stately homes," the outlet quoted Hardman as writing in Charles III. New King. New Court. The Inside Story 2024 , which was published under the title The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy in the U.S. in January.

4 people in 1 hotel room???

4 of us are traveling to frankfurt prague bratislava vienna and munich.

it seems like a lot of european hotels only offer rooms with 2 single beds. we're fine with sleeping on the floor, but will the eurogeeks get mad at us if we bring 4 people into 1 room?

will there even be enough room for 2 ppl on the floor?

if not what options are there besides hostels and getting 2 rooms?

If the hotel offers only two single beds, then it's only for two people. Hotels in Europe are generally very strict when it comes to the number of people in the room.....many charge by the person, not the room. Check with the various hotel booking engines to look for 4-person rooms....but they are in short supply.

Putting 4 people in a room designed for 2 is the same as stealing food from a market. Pay for what you need or don't buy it at all.

"eurogeeks"-what an ugly word-Remember that you are guests in their country and that you are representing your own. Show some respect.

"if not what options are there besides hostels and getting 2 rooms?" Take more money or STAY HOME.

I agree with all of the other posters to this inquiry. Rent a room or apartment for 4 people. There are laws which govern how many guests can stay in a room. Do not try to rent a room for 2. There are plenty of resources which have been discussed on this forum over and over again. Try looking at what others have said to previous questions and maybe use the links Rick Steves provides on this website. Also, you had best be careful what you say. Folks there can understand more English than you may think and you'll just be asking for trouble by not being respectful of others when making such comments. If you can't mind your manners, then stay home. Do not make a bad impression that other Americans will have to overcome once you are gone.

lol @ people getting mad at me ... just messing around everyone

thanks for the help tho, didn't realize european hotels are more strict about the people limit, bc i've done that many times in america lol

looks like hostels it is

No, you weren't "just messing around" and you know it. You were asking for advice on how to defraud hotel proprietors. Admitting you've done it here in the States doesn't make it any less dishonest.

He was. Notice where he is from -- part of the local culture. You can put four in a room -- we did it for years -- just ask for the family room. And a couple of times we were given two double rooms for the price of one family room - a small break. But a many hotels do not have family rooms so ask.

I agree that this guy is trying to pull one off but it is not necesary to make demeaning remarks about people's geographical location!!! Hoboken, for those of in you in other parts of the county, is now a very yuppified place to live for those who can't afford NY's exorbitant prices.

Please refrain on this board from making this kind of negative comment about anywhere. It is not in the spirit of this board.

Jon, as in the U.S., as I have done many times, you could squeeze a few extra people into your room. I don't know what everyone is so uptight about, you are "renting" the room after all, and as long as your guests don't mind the discomfort of sleeping on the floor, and you don't disturb the neighbors any more than 2 people would, then go for it. Just remember that a lot of hotels are small establishments, so they may notice 2 unknown "guests" going in and out.

Jared, it's not a matter of being "uptight." In Europe, hotels will rent by the number of people occupying the room, not the room itself. If you rent a room for 2 and squeeze 4 people into it, then you are violating the contract you have with the hotel, essentially cheating them out of money you should have paid. Be aware, too, that in many European countries, the number of people booked into a room is limited by law, not just by the hotel rules. I am disappointed that you would condone such actions.

we ended up booking on venere.com, it had better results when searching for four-person rooms.

didnt expect to cause such a fuss with this question haha. jared thanks for getting my back.

lee it looks like my attempt to defraud the eastern european hotel system will have to wait till next year lol

I understand why everyone feels that the original post was trying to "get away" with paying less. However, my situation is that we're a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 middle school children). In the US, we can get a room with 2 queen size beds anywhere we travel. I find, however, that in Europe I'm having a difficult time finding 1 room that'll accommodate a family of four. Most of our stays are 1-2 nights and we don't really need an entire flat. We're not 4 adults trying to pay less for a room...we're a family who are trying to travel together. Any suggestions?

We often did B & Bs with our kids. Smaller, private places often had 2 rooms for us--which gave the 4 of us a bit of a break from all that togetherness. It was rather like being in two different bedrooms at home. Especially in Germany and Austria, we found the cost of two rooms in a private zimmer was less than hotels. In Venice, we found a room for 3 and they added a cot. You might ask (phone or email) if they have family rooms available.

Why is this post being revived? It was active in June of 2008. The mischief has been done, the OP (thankfully) has long since left.

Let the zombies sleep!

Christine, You need to look for quad rooms. Some have two double beds, others some combination of doubles/twins. I've taken two Europe vacations with a family of four and stayed in quad rooms everywhere we went. Guide books often note which hotels have quad rooms. Sometimes hotels have something that will work even if they don't advertise it. A lot of posters on this site like apartments, but for short stays they often don't work. Maybe start a new thread letting us know where you are traveling, so that you can get some specific recommendations.

I agree with everything that Kathy said, and would give the same advice. Often, hotels have some quad rooms, but it may not be obvious on their website.

Also, travelling as a family of 4, with 2 middle-school kids, you might want to think about how many 1- and 2-night stays you have. With our kids, at least (who are currently 14 and 10), I'm still doing a lot of the packing and repacking for the 10yo, and giving the 14ho some help. Those shorter stays get old real fast, when you doing a lot of that packing to move to a new hotel.

This thread is nearly worn out, but I would just like to comment on the surprise that many Americans express at not finding huge rooms with 2 queen beds and giant bathrooms when they travel in Europe ... and often these are the same people who want to stay in "quaint family-run lodgings not huge chain hotels".

One can't have it both ways. Europe is OLD -- hotel rooms were often built up to 200 years ago -- not 10 years ago along a highway, like a Red Roof Inn!! You can get quad Rooms with swimming pools on Route 80 in Ohio ... but hey, you go to Europe for an experience with our cultural heritage, not a BeautyRest or plumbing shop-o-rama.

Thanks, Kathy and Lexma, for your helpful responses. I had posted on the "Travelers' Helpline" thinking that I would find thoughtful responses such as yours. Janet, while I generally agree with your assessment of American tourists wanting the Red Roof Inn, I feel that you were too quick to judge. I happen to be a first-generation American who has visited my German relatives on many occasions and have traveled extensively throughout Europe. I neither expect nor seek out the "Red Roof Inn" experience. Traveling with children, however, presents unique challenges and finding a room can be one of them.

Hi Christine ... no, I didn't think you wanted the Red Roof experience. My cavil was with people expecting to find easily the accommodations for four in ONE room. THere are many types of accommodation for 4 ... the most common (and economical) in Greece is the "studio unit". It has a BR with a double (or 2 singles) and a 2nd room with a mini-kitchenette niche and 2 daybeds/couches. These units are all over the Greek Isles and in many mainland towns and cities, AND they can be booked for just a 1 or 2-night stay -- I do it all the time. it's just the One Room aspect that people should not expect to find.

Each of those cities has fine Hostels with private rooms for 4 if you are trying to save money. B&B's and small hotels often have one or two rooms with more than two beds, and can add a bed for a fee. We are a family of 5 that has so far managed to find rooms in many cities that can accomodate us, but it is a chore. Hostels are easier, and when time permits, we like to rent apartments (urban) or cottages (rural) which are the best deal of all.

Don't sleep on the floor. Aside from the questionable morals of trying to slip that past the management, it's just not necessary with good hostel options. Many hostels take older folks, are reasonably quiet, clean, and simple to book. Add to that the likelihood of English speaking help with every common touristy question and it's ideal if you can handle the occasional bunk bed & thin matress.

Try reserving rooms in two or three star hotels by using www.booking.com . The web site tells you not only the room rate for the hotel but also how many people the particular room is suited for. There are also quads available for your family of four.

I know of that type of set-up in Berlin, in a Pension, where a quad/family room consists of 4 single beds arranged in the large room; it's called a Mehrbettzimmer.

I traveled a couple of years ago with my two children, and will return this summer (they'll be 10 and 14). Last time, we did research and found lots of sleeping options. For us, Hostels did not end up being the most economical -- because with four they charged us the same whether the kids were adults or not. In Italy, we stayed in a convent -- very cool experience -- right across from the Vatican! Throughout Germany we had no problem finding what they called 'family rooms' or 'familienzimmer'. Sometimes it was a standard room with beds, other times it was more like a little suite. As long as we stayed with pensions, gasthauses, or 2-3 star hotels, I could normally find rates similar or better than a hostel. To get that, though, I usually emailed an inquiry to the owner with my dates, the ages of my kids, etc., and asked what they had available. Sometimes, the hotel had an apartment that was not even on the website. In Munich, for example, we had a great little top floor room in a historic hotel -- only downside was it was on the 6th floor with no lift. Made you VERY certain of what you were bringing with you when you left for the day. While most of our stays were for 1-2 nights, at 3 nights plus it seems that apartments are the way to go.

When traveling with children we have had very good success by e-mailing the B&B/Hotel directly. I would start with typical internet searches, then once I found a good rate for a double, send an e-mail to the hotel. Simply state your situation -- "We are a family of 2 adults and 3 children, I saw you have a double available for $X. That is about what I can afford. What can you suggest?"

Hotels often have a couple of 'oddball' rooms that are hard to rent in many cases -- -- sometimes they are behind the breakfast room, in the basement, or don't have a window in the room -- -- that will get offered as an unusual solution for a unique problem.

Some of the hotels in the accor chain have very resonable rates on family rooms. My husband, teenage son and myself will often use Novotel when we travel in Europe.

The rooms are nothing special but they are clean and well located in many city centres.

Tourists get more access to royal family residences with 'exclusive tours' of Buckingham Palace and Balmoral Castle

A picture of Balmoral Castle exterior with some colourful gardens

Rooms at Balmoral Castle and Buckingham Palace that were previously off limits will be opened to the public for the first time, giving visitors a sneak peek into royal life.

The royal residences were open to tourists before, but now visitors will be able to see even more of the historical locations and take "exclusive tours" with special guides.

However, it comes at a price.

Tickets for what's called "The Balmoral Experience" cost 100 pounds ($192).

Significant royal residences

Scotland's Balmoral Castle was thought to be Queen Elizabeth II's favourite residence, with the late monarch spending her final days there before her death in 2022.

It was something of a retreat for the late monarch, who spent almost every summer of her life at the estate.

"I suppose Balmoral is a place one looks forward to very much," she said in 1992.

"I think granny is the most happy here. I think she really, really loves the Highlands," her granddaughter, Princess Eugenie said in 2012.

Buckingham Palace is in central London and is an administrative hub for the royal family.

Its balcony is a centrepiece for mayor royal events, with the royals typically gathering there to wave to crowds below.

Balmoral interior opened for the first time

Before now, access to Balmoral Castle was pretty much restricted to the grounds and the ballroom.

But a series of limited tours will give visitors a more intimate look at Queen Elizabeth's summer home later this year.

Here's how the Balmoral website describes it :

"For the first time since the castle was completed in 1855, we have been granted permission to take you on a private tour with our experienced guides. "They will take you on a historical journey through several of the beautiful rooms within Balmoral Castle. "You will learn about the origins of the Castle and how it has been loved by generations of the Royal family. Travel through time from the purchase of the Balmoral by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, through to present day, where you can see how rooms within the castle are used today by their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of the royal family."

The tours are limited to 40 people per day and will only run in July and August.

Tickets cost 100 pounds, with an extra 50 pounds for afternoon tea.

Balmoral tickets sell out in a day

Within a day after local media reported the new tour, all tickets have sold out , according to the Balmoral Castle website.

On Wednesday, the website was briefly brought down by demand.

"As we are currently experiencing a high demand of bookings, you have been placed in a queue," the website read.

General admission tickets, which covers entry to the grounds, gardens, and exhibitions are still available.

The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and their four children pose for a holiday snap in 1972.

More access to Buckingham Palace

Before this announcement, the public could tour 19 state rooms at Buckingham Palace.

But the East Wing — a section of Buckingham Palace which includes the front facade and the famous balcony — has been off limits.

In July and August, "expert guides" will lead small tourist groups through the wing.

It will lead people to a room that leads onto the balcony, according to Royal Collections Trust website .

But it doesn't say if tourists will be able to go out on the balcony.

Adults will have to be pay an extra 75 pounds on top of the standard admission ticket to the state rooms — so it will cost at least 107 pounds.

There are limited tickets available for these tours, which haven't gone on sale yet.
