What is toyota dynamic radar cruise control (drcc).

Here is one feature I guarantee: once you start using it, you will be spoiled when driving long distances and even daily use. Toyota’s Dynamic Radar Cruise Control has made it easy to navigate longer trips because its set-it-and-forget-it cruising feature is intuitive and convenient.

DRCC is a radar adaptive cruise control that works based on the preceding vehicle in front of you to maintain a preset distance and cruising speed above 20 mph.

How does toyota's dynamic radar cruise control work.

DRCC is an adaptive cruise control system that uses a millimeter wave radar to detect vehicles ahead of the driver. The system allows the driver to enter one of four preset distances to keep the vehicle cruising at a speed set by the driver above 20 miles per hour.

The vehicle-to-vehicle distance control system allows a driver to use one of three preset distances from the vehicle ahead of the driver if the vehicle is traveling 20 mph or more.

Only in some Toyota vehicles can you toggle between the Standard Cruise Control mode versus the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which is the Adaptive mode.

Note:  It is always the driver’s responsibility; only depend on the system partially.

How to use the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

You will have one of two DRCC system interfaces on most Toyota vehicles. First, you have the Cruise Control on the right-hand side of the steering wheel on a stem, with the on and off switch on the end of the stem. Second, you will have an on and off button on the right-hand side of the steering wheel to engage the system.

DRCC Stem Cruise Control

  • To activate the stem cruise control, ensure the button on the end of the stem has been depressed and the cruise control light appears on the dashboard or within the multi-information display.
  • Once you reach your cruising speed, press DOWN on the stem towards the vehicle’s floor. By default, the vehicle will be set at the furthest vehicle distance setting, three or four, based on your vehicle. 
  • Use the distance button to adjust to the “following distance” preset if you would like to ride closer to the preceding vehicle in front of you.
  • Hold the cruise stem UP towards the vehicle’s ceiling to increase your set speed, or hold the stem DOWN to decrease your speed. 
  • Pull the stem towards you to cancel the cruise control and enter coast mode, or press the brake pedal.
  • To Re-engage, pull the stem UP to RESUME the cruise control and return to the speed previously set.

To activate the DRCC mounted on the steering wheel:

  • Locate and push the button with a speedometer icon and the word “mode” below it.
  • Toggle this button to switch from standard Cruise Control mode to Adaptive Cruise Control. The Multi-Informational Display (MID) will display the mode you have entered.
  • Ensure the cruise control light stays illuminated, verifying this system is still active.
  • Reach your desired speed and use the SET button; in some vehicles, the set button appears with a car between two lane markers and the speedometer icon below. 
  • To toggle between the preset distances, use the button with a car and three bars below it. Each button press will decrease the preset distance to follow the preceding vehicle in front of you more closely until cycling back to the furthest distance setting.
  • The +RES/- button will increase your speed when pressing the +RES and decrease when pressing the – button.
  • Just one press will increase or decrease by a mile per hour.
  • Holding either button will increase or reduce the rate of speed more dramatically.
  • You will enter a coast mode with the cancel button or hit the brake pedal.

Additional DRCC Setting

On some vehicles, you can make fine-tune adjustments to the DRCC. To do so, use the Direction pad on the left side of the steering wheel. 

  • Use the Direction pad to navigate to the SETTINGS menu.
  • Navigate to the DRCC settings.
  • Acceleration Setting, choose your preset level of acceleration.
  • Guide message on or off
  • Curve Speed Reduction, OFF, Low, Mid, or High.
  • Press the Back button to return to the previous menu.

Full-Speed Range DRCC vs. Standard DRCC

The Full-Speed Range DRCC works with the Toyota Pre-Collision System to make driving highly convenient. This system is designed to work in a broader speed range than the standard DRCC. 

The system uses low-speed following under certain circumstances and intuitive braking to help avoid colliding with preceding vehicles. The automatic braking features help slow down the vehicle as you head into traffic and alert you via the collision warning system controlled by the  Toyota Pre-Collision System .

Full-Speed Range is an enhanced version of DRCC that has improved vehicle detection, providing more natural, smoother speed adjustments. Plus, a fourth preset distance setting vs. the three is now standard in this updated system.

Reduced Cognitive Load:  The system takes over adjusting speed and maintaining distance, allowing drivers to focus on other aspects of driving, such as steering and observing road conditions.

Ease of Use:  Generally, DRCC is user-friendly and easy to engage/disengage, making it accessible even for those unfamiliar with advanced car technologies.

Enhanced Confidence:  Knowing that the vehicle has an additional layer of safety can provide drivers with greater peace of mind, especially in challenging driving conditions.

Future-proof:  As vehicle technologies advance, features like DRCC are likely to receive Over-The-Air updates or work in conjunction with other evolving technologies, making the car more adaptable for the future.

Integration with Other Safety Systems:  As part of the Toyota Safety Sense program, DRCC complements other safety features for a holistic approach to road safety. One of these features is Lane Tracing Assist, which helps keep a vehicle centered in its lane, even while you drive on bending roads.

Now standard across the lineup are  Blind Spot Monitors (BSM)  with  Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA)  for a safer, more convenient driving experience. New  Traffic Jam Assist (TJA)  facilitates stop-and-go driving on congested roads by controlling acceleration, braking, and steering within a speed range of 0 to 25 mph.  Toyota Safety Sense (TSS)  is an advanced suite of safety features designed to keep drivers and passengers safer on the road. These innovative technologies help avoid accidents altogether. Here is a list of components within the suite:

  • Pre-Collision System (PCS) : Detects vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, providing warnings and emergency braking if needed.
  • Lane Departure Alert (LDA) : Warns drivers of unintentional lane departure and may provide corrective steering.
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) : Maintains a set distance from the vehicle ahead, adjusting speed accordingly.
  • Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) : Keeps the vehicle centered in its lane using lane markers and preceding vehicles.
  • Automatic High Beams (AHB) : Automatically switches between high and low beams based on surrounding traffic.
  • Road Sign Assist (RSA) : Detects and displays road signs to enhance driver awareness.
  • Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) : Provides braking or steering support to maintain distance and stay in lane.

I use this feature to stay under the speed limit as an extra precaution to avoid getting a ticket.

As always, while DRCC offers numerous benefits, it’s not a substitute for attentive driving. It’s crucial to remain fully focused on the road and be prepared to take control of the vehicle at any time.

To turn on Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, you typically press the cruise control button on the steering wheel, then set your desired speed and the following distance using the steering wheel controls. Also, above are more detailed instructions on how to use the DRCC. *Always refer to your vehicle’s manual for specific instructions.

“DRCC Unavailable” usually indicates that the system cannot function properly at the moment. This could be due to sensor issues, poor weather conditions, or other factors. On Toyota vehicles, the radar sensor is behind the Toyota emblem; a glassy-looking plastic cover in front is usually it. Try cleaning this area free of bugs and debris. It can also be a rectangular plastic window built within the grille of Toyota trucks. *Check your vehicle’s owner’s manual or see your local dealer.

Toyota’s long-running 4Runner enters its sixth generation without a few cylinders.

  • The redesigned 4Runner loses its V6 and replaces it with the choice of either a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine or a 2.4-liter I4 hybrid powertrain.
  • Toyota says the 2025 4Runner is scheduled to hit dealers in the fall of 2024.

Toyota’s current 4Runner debuted in 2009 and has only become more popular with time. For 2025, Toyota is moving the 4Runner to the same TNGA-F platform that underpins the latest Tacoma, downsizing the powerplant and totally replacing the sheetmetal.

For some, the underhood changes might be the biggest pivot. The venerable 4.0-liter V6 is finally gone, replaced, instead, with a 2.4-liter turbocharged I4. In base trim, this 2.4-liter I4 sends 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic.

Like the Toyota Tacoma , the 4Runner will also be available as a hybrid, which adds a 48-hp electric motor into the mix, cranking total output to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. This hybrid powertrain also uses an eight-speed automatic. From there, power travels to the rear wheels through a part-time or a full-time four-wheel-drive system.

For some context, the current 4Runner’s aforementioned V6 sends 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque through a five-speed transmission.

While Toyota hasn’t revealed any fuel economy figures, if the Tacoma is any indication, there will be gains. The 2.4-liter turbo under the hood of two-wheel-drive Tacoma pickups boasts 23 mpg combined, 26 highway mpg, and 20 city mpg. That’s a 2 mpg combined bump over the outgoing 3.5-liter V6 .

We should expect a similar bump for the next-gen 4Runner. We can also see the 2024 Land Cruiser, which offers a similar powertrain, turns out 23 mpg combined from 25 highway mpg and 22 city mpg.

Surrounding this engine is entirely new sheetmetal. This sixth-generation 4Runner has grown considerably in its latest iteration, gaining in every direction. The ’25 Toyota 4Runner is 194.4 inches long and rides on a 112.2-inch wheelbase, gaining 4.7 inches and 2.4 inches, respectively, over the outgoing model. It’s almost two inches wider, too, at 77.8 inches.

As for ground clearance, Toyota says the new 4Runner can clear 9.2 inches, which is 0.2 inches higher than the outgoing two-wheel-drive model, but 0.4 inches lower than the outgoing four-wheel-drive 4Runner.

Alongside a new engine, standard 4Runners will see an 8-inch touchscreen media system, with higher trim models getting a 14-inch multimedia screen. Likewise, entry-level 4Runners pack a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, replaced by a 12.3-inch digital cluster on upper trims.

Toyota is adding a smart-key system with a push-button ignition as standard equipment across the board, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Underpinning all of this is the new TNGA-F platform shared with the Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser. This means the new 4Runner will feature a multi-link rear suspension and a double-wishbone front suspension.

Slick features for off-roaders like sway bar disconnects are also joining the list of 4Runner features. Toyota is oddly secretive about wheel and tire options, except for with the new Trailhunter trim. This version will ride on 33 inches of Toyo Open Country A/T tires.

As for the trim walk, the entry-point is still the SR5 model. From there, you move into the TRD Sport and TRD Sport Premium models. Those models all see the standard 2.4-liter turbocharged I4 mill.

Kicking off the hybrid-equipped models is the Limited Trim, which is joined by TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and TRD-Pro. Rounding out the list of available models are the new Trailhunter and the luxe-focused Platinum trim.

As you’d expect from any generational shift, this 4Runner is packed with active driver assistance features. The ’25 4Runner comes standard with Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0, which includes automatic high beams, lane-tracing assist, and a full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control system as standard equipment.

The 4Runner also gets lane-departure alert with a steering-assist system, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and Toyota’s Proactive Driving Assist system. This last system uses the camera suite to help subtly add steering and braking inputs around other vehicles, pedestrians, or curves.

Toyota says this new 4Runner will be built at the company’s plant in Tahara, Japan, and is scheduled to hit showrooms this fall.

Pricing is still locked inside a Toyota executive’s filing cabinet, but it’s safe to say there will be a price increase. Currently, a 4Runner will set you back at least $42,100. Likely, the next-gen 4Runner’s base SR5 model will still start closer to $45,000.

Here's How Toyota's Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Helps Keep You Safe

J apanese auto giant Toyota introduced the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) advanced driver assistance systems in 2015 with three primary functions: automatic high beam, lane departure alert, and a pre-collision system. Moreover, the system came with a forward-facing camera and a millimeter-wave radar to include other functionalities like adaptive cruise control and road sign assist.

The latest generations of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS 2.5 and 2.5+) have enhanced features to prevent or mitigate collisions, keep vehicles centered on the lanes, and deliver enhanced safety when driving in the dark. The game plan is to make road accidents a thing of the past through continuously evolving technology. Toyota debuted its most advanced ADAS technology, Toyota Teammate, in 2022 in the second-generation Toyota Mirai FCEV , and it has more driving tech to keep occupants safe. The latest Toyota Teammate also includes a Level 2 hands-free driving technology and an automatic parking feature to make driving more convenient and fun.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 And 2.5+: How Does It Work?

The latest Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) versions, 2.5 and 2.5+, have six core functions that unlock even more capabilities for a safer drive. The pre-collision system can detect vehicles and pedestrians in daytime and low-light scenarios. Moreover, it detects bicyclists in the daytime while providing visual and audible alerts to warn the driver. If the system detects no action from the driver, it applies automatic braking to stop the car.

Furthermore, the pre-collision system now includes intersection support and emergency steering assist. The former detects vehicles and pedestrians when making a left or right-hand turn. At the same time, the latter helps stabilize the vehicle when the driver makes an emergency maneuver to avoid obstacles.

Meanwhile, TSS 2.5 and 2.5+ include full-speed dynamic radar cruise control with low-speed following, stopping, speed matching, acceleration, and deceleration functions. For TSS 2.5+, curve speed management is included and uses the camera and built-in yaw sensors to reduce the vehicle speed when tackling curves. Other TSS features include lane tracing assist and road sign assist.

Toyota Teammate

Toyota debuted the second-gen Toyota Mirai in 2022 as the brand's first production vehicle to get a standard Toyota Teammate with more ADAS capabilities. It features two new core functions – Advanced Drive and Advanced Park – that first saw action in the Lexus LS 500h for the 2022 model year.

Advanced Drive enables Level 2 semi-autonomous, hands-free driving on selected highways like GM's Super Cruise and Ford's BlueCruise . In addition, Advanced Drive can keep the vehicle within the lane, follow other cars, change lanes, or perform overtaking maneuvers. Advanced Park uses circumferential cameras and 360-degree ultrasonic sensors to park the vehicle with zero driver intervention, including parallel parking duties.

The automotive industry is still a revolution away from unlocking Level 4 or Level 5 full self-driving automation. Rising inflation and global conflicts have forced experts to delay the commercialization of self-driving cars by 2035, but good news is on the horizon. Level 3 autonomous cars will most likely arrive in showrooms in mid-2025, and Level 4 autonomous vehicles will follow soon after. Until then, advanced driving assistance systems are the next best thing.

Setting the vehicle speed

1. Press the driving assist mode select switch to select dynamic radar cruise control.

The dynamic radar cruise control indicator will illuminate.

2. Using the accelerator pedal, accelerate or decelerate to the desired vehicle speed (approximately 20 mph [30 km/h] or more), and press the driving assist switch to set the set vehicle speed.

The set vehicle speed will be displayed on the multi-information display.

The vehicle speed at the moment the switch is released will be the set vehicle speed.

In fact, this all-new sixth generation 4Runner raises the bar in terms of go-anywhere capability and high-end refinement. The 2025 4Runner will be built in Toyota Motor Corporation's Tahara plant in Japan and will arrive in the U.S. in the fall of 2024.

Solid Foundation

4Runner is all-new from the ground up and is built on Toyota's tough TNGA-F global truck platform that is shared with Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra and Sequoia. This platform utilizes a high-strength boxed, steel-ladder frame and features a multi-link coil rear and double wishbone front suspension.

The adoption of the innovative TNGA-F platform not only adds strength, but it also improves the vehicle's ride comfort and on-road manners. Passengers feel the benefits of this new platform, even when riding in the available third-row. The enhanced frame, paired with the powerful i-FORCE MAX powertrain, allows 4Runner to tow up to 6,000 pounds.

Evolving the Legacy

"Designing the legendary 4Runner began with identifying its unique and memorable aspects linked to fun, outdoor recreation," says Calty President, Kevin Hunter. "Inspired by Baja desert racing, the high lift, lean body, big tire, rugged athleticism defines the core of 4Runner's go anywhere purpose".

The Michigan-based CALTY design team spearheaded the design of this all-new 4Runner. Designers pulled inspiration from the past while also focusing on the future. The all-new Toyota 4Runner was designed alongside the Tacoma and shares a family resemblance but is unique in its own way. Both share inspiration from the desert racing scene and have a rugged-with-a-purpose appearance. In a nod to the first and second generations of 4Runners, designers were able to bring back the legacy "wrap over" quarter glass, and the popular roll-down rear window remains etched into the vehicle's DNA. The design team meticulously labored to achieve the ideal interior design. They sought to achieve a vehicle with ease of operation and a functional interface that strikes a pure balance of modern sophistication and capable authenticity. For example, second-row tumble seats help increase 4Runners interior versatility and maximizes cargo floor usage.

i-FORCE Power MAXed

This next chapter of Toyota 4Runner offers two powerful and efficient turbocharged 2.4 liter four-cylinder powertrains including the i-FORCE engine with 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque that is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and Limited grades will come standard with the i-FORCE powertrain.

4Runner's i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain is available on TRD Off-Road and Limited, while standard on the TRD Pro, Trailhunter and Platinum models. This powertrain pairs the turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission, feeding off a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack that creates a total system output of up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque, the most powerful powertrain ever offered on 4Runner.

Trail Ready

Toyota 4Runner is synonymous with rugged capability. In its latest form, 4Runner continues to add increased capability to an already incredible legacy. The newly available Stabilizer Bar Disconnect Mechanism increases suspension articulation at the push of a button. This feature allows the vehicle to flex while helping keep tires in contact with the trail. 4Runner raises the bar in another area with up to 32-degree approach and 24-degree departure angles. The available Multi-Terrain Monitor system aids the driver allowing them to see potential hazards on the center display.

4Runner will be offered in 2WD, part-time 4WD or Full-time 4WD. 2WD models will feature an automatic limited-slip differential (Auto LSD), and four-wheel-drive models have an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range along with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and an automatic limited-slip differential (Auto LSD). An electronic locking rear differential is standard on TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Trailhunter grades. The Limited is offered with an available a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a center locking differential on i-FORCE MAX models, while this setup is standard on Platinum grades.

The Multi-Terrain Select system now functions in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low. This offers adjustable settings to help control wheel spin on a variety of terrain such as Mud, Dirt, and Sand. 4Runner also adopts the new, quieter CRAWL Control function that acts as a low-speed, off-road cruise control that allows the driver to focus on steering. When traction is extremely limited, the available electronically activated locking rear differential can help split power 50/50 to the rear wheels. Downhill Assist Control is another off-road feature available and helps the driver navigate descents by limiting the speed of the vehicle.

A Grade for Everyone

Toyota 4Runner expands its grade offering to provide customers with more choices than ever before. Nine grades are available including SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off Road, TRD Off Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter.

The Trailhunter grade has been added to the line up to allow owners to go further. 4Runner's capability and durability have made it a fan favorite of overlanders, and now adventure seekers have a turnkey solution with a manufacturer-developed overland rig straight from the factory. Toyota collaborated with a number of off-road component companies to make the fit and finish that much better. For example, the Trailhunter will feature ARB's Old Man Emu (OME) 2.5-inch forged shocks with rear external piggyback remote reservoirs, along with a uniquely co-designed ARB Roof Rack. The OME shocks along with the 33-inch Toyo Open Country A/T tires boost up Trailhunter an additional two inches in the front and one and a half inches in the rear. A standard low-profile high-mount air intake sources cleaner air for the standard i-FORCE MAX powertrain. Trailhunter adds protection that includes rock rails and high strength steel skid plates for serious off-the-grid-adventure capabilities. The Trailhunter is also equipped with a heritage grill with bronze "TOYOTA" lettering and an integrated 20-inch LED light bar that is complemented by color selectable RIGID LED fog lamps. A seriously powerful 2400W AC inverter provides juice to two locations in the cabin and the rear cargo area. Trailhunter is ready for customization with other Toyota accessory offerings using three easy to reach auxiliary switches that are pre-wired throughout the vehicle.

The 2025 4Runner introduces its first-ever Platinum grade which offers customers a high-end, luxury experience with all the capability you expect in a 4Runner. Platinum slots above the Limited grade by adding unique black exterior styling elements, heated second-row seats, a standard tow tech package, Head-Up Display and automatic rain sensing wipers.

Latest Tech

4Runner receives Toyota's latest technology with new screens. A new 8-inch or available 14-inch multimedia touchscreen displays Toyota's latest Audio Multimedia system, which is designed and engineered by Toyota's Texas-based Connected Technologies team. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility, and pairs well with the available Qi wireless charging pad with enhanced power output. A USB-C data and charging port is integrated on the right side of the multimedia touchscreen, and dual USB-C charging ports are included in the front row and available for the rear passengers. A 7-inch gauge cluster is standard on lower grades and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is standard on higher grades.

Smart Key System with push-button start is standard on all grades. With an active Remote Connect trial or subscription, an available Digital Key on select grades connects with compatible smartphones to allow vehicle entry, and vehicle starting (4G network dependent). The Digital Key can also be remotely shared with others to give more control over vehicle access rather than giving someone the physical key.

The all-new youthful and dynamic 4Runner nicely rounds out Toyota's rugged lineup of tough body-on-frame vehicles. Proactive Driving Assist is now a part of Toyota Safety Sense. Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) uses the vehicle's camera and radar, when system operating conditions are met, to provide gentle braking and/or steering to support driving tasks such as distance control between your vehicle and a preceding vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist. PDA can also provide gentle braking into curves. Proactive Driving Assist is not a substitute for the Pre-Collision System and operates in different circumstances.

Including the addition of Proactive Driving Assist, the Toyota Safety Sense features have been enhanced for TSS 3.0:

  • The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection has enhanced detection capabilities thanks to new system sensors. It receives enhanced intersection support with improved detection capability in certain circumstances. In addition to pedestrian and bicyclist detection, this system now includes the capability to detect a motorcyclist.
  • Lane Departure Alert will now provide Steering Assist as well as enhanced lane recognition that includes detection of certain 3D objects, like guardrails, that may be used to help define the lane.
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control will have Full-Speed Range capability and adds a fourth following distance setting, from the previously available three. Enhanced vehicle detection allows for the ability to detect more than one preceding vehicle, as well as vehicles in adjacent lanes. This helps the system to provide smoother, more natural speed adjustments, especially when the driver changes lanes.
  • Lane Tracing Assist requires Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to be enabled for it to function. The system requires detectable lane markings in order to function. Like Lane Departure Alert, lane recognition is enhanced over prior TSS generations. In addition to lane centering, this system also helps provide more space between vehicles being passed in adjacent lanes. It works by offsetting the vehicles' driving path with minor steering adjustments while keeping the vehicle within its lane.
  • An Emergency Driving Stop System is a new function of Lane Tracing Assist. It's designed to monitor the driver's inputs, such as steering operation, to determine if they're inattentive or non-responsive, such as during a medical emergency. This feature is designed to bring the vehicle to a stop if the driver doesn't respond to alerts to take control.
  • Road Sign Assist is designed to detect speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, yield signs, and certain warning signs, and display an icon of the sign on the Multi-Information Display (MID).

In addition to TSS 3.0, other available features include Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), which is designed to help detect and warn you of vehicles approaching or positioned in the adjacent lanes and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) for added peace of mind by helping to detect vehicles approaching from either side while backing out and alerting you with a visual and audible warning. Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) also comes standard.

Beyond Zero Vision

As part of Toyota's diverse portfolio approach toward a carbon-neutral future, 4Runner is the latest hybrid offering in the lineup to wear the Beyond Zero badge. Very soon, Toyota will offer 19 electrified vehicles for customers to choose from. Enhanced vehicle detection allows for the ability to detect more than one preceding vehicle, as well as vehicles in adjacent lanes. This helps the system to provide smoother, more natural speed adjustments, especially when the driver changes lanes.
  • Lane Tracing Assist requires Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to be enabled for it to function. The system requires detectable lane markings in order to function. Like Lane Departure Alert, lane recognition is enhanced over prior TSS generations. In addition to lane centering, this system also helps provide more space between vehicles being passed in adjacent lanes. It works by offsetting the vehicles’ driving path with minor steering adjustments while keeping the vehicle within its lane.
  • An Emergency Driving Stop System is a new function of Lane Tracing Assist. It’s designed to monitor the driver’s inputs, such as steering operation, to determine if they’re inattentive or non-responsive, such as during a medical emergency. This feature is designed to bring the vehicle to a stop if the driver doesn’t respond to alerts to take control.
  • Road Sign Assist is designed to detect speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, yield signs, and certain warning signs, and display an icon of the sign on the Multi-Information Display (MID).

In addition to TSS 3.0, other available features include Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), which is designed to help detect and warn you of vehicles approaching or positioned in the adjacent lanes and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) for added peace of mind by helping to detect vehicles approaching from either side while backing out and alerting you with a visual and audible warning. Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) also comes standard.

The 2025 4Runner will be built in Toyota Motor Corporation’s Tahara plant in Japan and will arrive in Canada in the Fall of 2024.

Disable Dynamic Radar when on Cruise Control?

I've got a brand new 2021 Toyota Rav4 and it has a feature that really bugs me... the "Dynamic Radar" feature when cruise control is enabled. I find it's responsiveness to be slow and actually a pain in the butt. Is there a way to disable this feature? It should be an optional feature... I drive about 20k miles per year in a metro area and use cruise control whenever I'm on a uncongested metro freeway.  

It can be annoying sometimes especially driving a constant speed, coming on a vehicle traveling at a slower speed after a few minutes you realize that you have also slowed down. Without this feature you would have to brake, slow down or move over to pass, which I guess makes you more conscious of what you are doing. It still doesn't solve the problem of D heads who feel the need to pass you only, then pull over in front of you to slow down.

Did you find a solution? I'm slowly adjusting the features I dislike on my new RAV4 but this one seems to have few options as most people have no issue with it.  

Just press and (hold) the cruise control button for a few seconds.  

Have you found an answer? I have the same issue with my 2019. Im tempted to find the fuse or wiring harness for the radar and pull it. I have a 50 mile commute. Id rather have real cruise control or you end up getting slowed down from 75 mph to 55 because some moron doesnt know how to drive in a fast lane. I dont know how many times its almost caused a wreck from when you're at a turn and it hits the breaks for a semi in the other lane. This is like an idiot feature for bad drivers. Defeats the purpose of a hybrid if its constantly slowing down and speeding up on the highway. The idiots replying here are the exception not the other way around.  

Pressing and holding the cruise control button for an extra second or two works. At first I have the cruise control and a car symbol but after holding the on button for a extra couple of seconds, the car symbol disappears and just the standard cruise indicator stays on. Yay!  

Just press and hold the cruise button when you first activate it and it will deactivate dynamic cruise.  

At first I wasn't a fan of dynamic cruise control, but slowly I come to realise it does come in handy sometimes. Recently I was on the Hwy following a car in from of me, it started to slow down as there was road construction ahead, my vehicle also slowed down, as we passed a parked police car checking for speeding vehicles through a construction zone, saved me a ticket. Once we were through the car in front sped up along with my car.  

I've used the radar cruise control extensively and find it works well for me.  

It's used only to assist you while driving and will not drive for you if you don't like it just turn it off and use the regular cruise.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita. 

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.
