Our tour was excellent. The driver, Zachary, was very competent, could not have been better. Our guide, Luel, was superb. Everything was very well organised with specialist guides who spoke the language of each tribe we visited. In Addis we simply mentioned in passing that we would have liked to have visited the main Ethiopian church. Luel was immediately on the phone to the archdeacon and we had a most informative visit. When we were visiting the Omo Valley tribes he adjusted our schedule when he heard that the Bull Jumping event would be taking place so we could attend, without missing out on any of the other visits. He knew all sorts of useful things, for instance that one of the nomadic tribes especially prized soap, which was difficult for them to obtain, and we visited a great market to buy big slabs of it to give as gifts. The whole week was very well planned with a perfect balance of rest time and days packed with interest and surprise. We loved it!

This tour met all my expectations since I was able to see and experience the amazing daily life activities of some of the tribes of the Omo valley. You start this adventure at the capital, Addis Ababa, the highest capital of the African continent, and the professional guide and driver are just waiting for you ahead of time. It’s a long driving time to go to Arbaminch, but it is worthy and priceless to visit the Dorze Village. The next day I was ready to see some of the largest crocodiles in the world when I visited lake Chamo. You will love walking the village in Konso and the local market in Jinka. Be ready to see wildlife when you visit the Mago National Park the and the Mursi Tribe the next day. The time that I spent with the Logera tribe, Karo tribe, Gurdo tribe , and Dassanech tribe was simply spectacular. The accommodations were comfortable and pretty safe and my favorite one was the Paradise Lodge.

I landed on November 4th without any luggage. Car and guide Yihun were at airport and drove me to the hotel. Melese met me at the hotel and immediately took me shopping for bag clothes etc. he even negotiated the price for me. It was to be a group tour but due to political problems I got a personally guided tour at the group price. I appreciated the fact that Melese hadn’t cancelled the tour. Next day we toured Addis. Yihun and the driver were excellent and we even had a traditional injera, raw meat, BBQ chicken and local beer lunch. Melese and I flew to Bahar Dar and spent two nights at a decent hotel. First day lake and monasteries. We talked about if there was any chance I could spend time with a local Bahar Dar family Next lunch was at his sisters with coffee home made beer araki injera meat and vegetables. It was simply amazing as the kids were there as well. I really felt at home. By organizing the get together Melese surpassed all of my expectations. Fighting broke out that day in Lalibella and we had to reschedule with Melese help. Manuel was my guide in Gander. Sightseeing and Ethiopian lunch. Made local friends at the airport. Ethiopians are friendly and young people approached me so as to practice their English. Lalibela trip was memorable. Muchuw was my guide. We visited the rock churches met drank and ate with locals at an outdoor bar. Children with smiling innocent faces crowded around and it was amazing. This was innocence in the face of war. I was the Only guest at hotel with bullet holes in some rooms due to fighting near by. Next day attended church with the locals. Muchuw and I stopped at a shop and bought a proper football for a group of 10 children who were playing without a proper ball. Met the ringleader at the rock church. Will never forget the look on his face when we gave him the ball. Got back to Addis and flew to South Africa the next day I travel because I want to meet people and learn about their life, aspirations, likes and dislikes. Melese and his team made sure that all my requirements were exceeded and I left Addis with wanting to go back some day. Friends I made there are in touch frequently thru WhatsApp and some have agreed to watch over the lalibela children. Even got another guide to agree to teach the kids to play football. Have travelled everywhere, but this trip I will fondly remember and cherish thanks to Melese and his team.

Most amazing experience. Highly recommend. The driver, the guides, the food—all welcoming. I will be returning. Ethiopia is forever in my heart.

We just returned from an amazing tour booked through Aman company. Amanuel was responsive to our many questions and requests, usually within the same day. He listened to our preferences and time schedule and arranged a great itinerary. When we arrived in Addis Ababa Aman was in the airport to greet us, and he continued to take care of us for the entire trip. He was an expert tour owner but also became a friend as we traveled long distances all over Ethiopia! He is a kind and thoughtful person,The Landcruiser we traveled was comfortable for our party of 3 and the company guide and driver noah was super amazing! The trip exceeded our expectations, with many special experiences we had not anticipated, but curated by Aman company & his teams. Visits with the tribe omo villages, meals in the home of a friend in the danakil desert, of course the stay in the desert camp with the sunset camel ride through the dunes....I could go on and on, it was magnificent. The hotels in the north were very nice, clean, all had hot water and friendly service. They arranged for city guides in all places and Fikru in Lalibela, which was excellent. All of this at a very reasonable price. Thank you Amanuel and the cure of Aman tours, for a trip of a lifetime!

Upon receipt of the Conditional Offer Letter, you may be required to pay an application fee, part of your tuition fees, or a deposit to your school account. Ethiopia has never been colonised and thus not only is it a country of exceptional culture, but it is also remarkable for its great sites: the Ruins of Axum, the city of Harar, the Lalibela rock-hewn churches, the Lower Valley of the Awash or the Simien Mountains National Park… So many wonders listed as UNESCO’s World Heritage.

Search and rescue efforts continue after 7.4 magnitude earthquake rocks Taiwan. Here's the latest

Rescuers are working to free dozens trapped after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the east coast of Taiwan — causing landslides and collapsed structures.

At least nine people have died , more than 900 others are injured and over 100 buildings have been damaged.

The quake is the strongest to hit Taiwan in 25 years .

Here's what else we know:

• The quake:  The earthquake  hit  at 7:58 a.m. local time, 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of the city of Hualien at a depth of 34.8 kilometers, according to the US Geological Survey.
• Aftershocks : The quake was followed by 29 aftershocks greater than a magnitude of 4.0 near the epicenter of the earthquake in east Taiwan so far, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Tremors have been felt across the island, including in Taipei. Tremors as high as magnitude 7 are  expected  in the following days.
• Hualien County:  The region where the quake struck, Hualien County, has a population of about 300,000, around 100,000 of whom live in the main city of Hualien. But many in the region live in remote coastal or mountain communities that  can be hard to reach , so it might take time to understand the extent of Wednesday's quake.
• Trapped miners: Taiwan's national fire agency said that 71 people are trapped in two mines in Hualien.
• Power cuts : More than 91,000 households were without electricity, according to Taiwan's Central Emergency Command Center.
• Medical facilities: Hospitals across Taiwan’s capital , Taipei City, are operating normally despite being damaged by Wednesday’s earthquake, according to the Municipal Government.
• US monitoring: The Biden administration is monitoring the earthquake in Taiwan overnight and is prepared to offer assistance, a National Security Council spokesperson said Wednesday. 

71 miners trapped in 2 mines in Taiwan after earthquake, national fire agency says

Taiwan's national fire agency said that 71 people are trapped in two mines in Hualien after a powerful earthquake struck the island. 

In the Heping mine, there are 64 people trapped, and seven more are trapped in the Zhonghe mine, the fire agency said in a news conference on Wednesday.

Taiwanese semiconductor facilities will resume production overnight following earthquake

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC), the chipmaking giant, said on Wednesday that its facilities which were impacted by the 7.4 magnitude earthquake are expected to resume production overnight. 

TSMC reported that their overall tool recovery is at more than 70% within 10 hours of the earthquake striking the island. Safety systems are also operating normally, TSMC added.

The company noted that a small number of tools were damaged but that there was no damage to its extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) tools. Work at construction sites will resume after further inspections are complete, TSMC said.

Earlier, a TSMC spokesperson told CNN they had evacuated some manufacturing plants. All personnel are now safe, TSMC said in an update.

Biden administration monitoring Taiwan earthquake, White House says

The Biden administration is monitoring the earthquake in Taiwan overnight and is prepared to offer assistance, a National Security Council spokesperson said Wednesday. 

"We are monitoring reports of the earthquake impacting Taiwan and continue to monitor its potential impact on Japan. The United States stands ready to provide any necessary assistance. All those affected are in our prayers," a statement from National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said.

7 major earthquakes have hit Taiwan over the last 50 years

The 7.4 magnitude earthquake that killed at least nine people and injured hundreds Wednesday, is the strongest to hit Taiwan in 25 years .

Over the last 50 years, the island has experienced a total of seven major earthquakes, the last being a 7.1 magnitude quake in 2006 in Pingtung County in southern Taiwan.

The island sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire , which makes it prone to earthquakes.

29 aftershocks above 4.0 magnitude have occurred near epicenter since earthquake, US Geological Survey says

There have been 29 aftershocks greater than a magnitude of 4.0 near the epicenter of the earthquake in east Taiwan so far, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Of these aftershocks:

• One was above 6.0
• 13 have been at or above 5.0
• 14 have been above 4.0.

Forecast during recovery efforts: Tonight's forecast in Hualien City, near the epicenter, calls for increasing cloud coverage. Thursday is looking at mostly cloudy skies with afternoon showers and rain Thursday night and Friday during the day.

Rainfall totals should be relatively light for Taiwan, with models calling for under 25 mm (less than 1 inch) by Friday evening local time.

No-poaching clause means travel nurses can't accept jobs in N.L.

Union president says some agency nurses have been contractually prohibited from accepting permanent jobs.

The Registered Nurses' Union of Newfoundland and Labrador is appalled that the provincial government included a clause in private-agency nursing contracts preventing some nurses from staying and working in the province's public health-care system. 

President Yvette Coffey said she became aware of the issue when a nurse who was employed by a private agency inquired about taking a permanent, full-time position in the public system.

"He was not allowed to take a position in Newfoundland and Labrador for upwards of 12 months after he finished his contract with the private agency," Coffey said.

After some investigation, the union discovered that were are four or five agency contracts that all have limitations between 6-12 months denying a nurse the ability to take a job in Newfoundland and Labrador's public health-care system.

One private agency's contract requires a nurse to be disconnected from a private agency for more than a year before they can work in Newfoundland and Labrador. If breached, the province pays a hefty fine. 

"If one of those nurses comes and takes a job in their public health-care system, we — as a government — have to pay between $5,000 or a or full year's salary [to the private company]," Coffey said.

Coffey said there is no logical rationale for restrictions that she said "handcuffs" the province from hiring nurses and nurse practitioners.  

"It's appalling," she said. 

When COVID-19 was raging, Coffey said she was involved in conversations with the province to bring more travel nurses here. 

"I was told at that meeting that there was a clause in the contract that would prevent the agency from poaching our nurses out of the public sector, and also from poaching our graduates, our new nursing graduates, for up to a year. Nobody told me that it was also reciprocal with the company, and that we could not hire their agency nurses into our publicly funded health-care system."

Coffey noted that the province is working to recruit nurses from India, Ireland, the Philippines, but has restricted itself from hiring the people who are already here and ready to work.  

Protecting the work force

Debbie Molloy, vice-president of N.L. Health Services, said when the contracts with private nursing agencies were signed peak-pandemic, the health authority's hands were tied. 

"We do have contracts with a number of different agencies and they have what's called a non solicitation clause," she said. 

"It actually protects us because agencies cannot hire either nurses who work with us within the province, or we actually extended that to also be students who are graduating."

Molloy said the clause is meant to ensure that N.L. Health Services maintains a healthy workforce, and that public sector workers are not recruited by private agencies. 

Health Minister Tom Osborne said the contracts were drawn up and agreed upon between the health authority and private agencies, and that the health authority did the right thing by including the non-solicitation clause. 

"If there wasn't some level of protection, we could potentially lose far more nurses to other provinces than we would gain," he said. 

"If there wasn't a protection built into the contract to ensure that agencies did not recruit our nurses to work as agency nurses in their same position, in the same hospital, for the same community — they would drain our workforce."

Osborne said the number of nurses bound by the clause is low. 

"We will be doing what we can to try and work with the agency to have them released, but that remains to be seen," he said. 

According to Molloy, as of March 18 there are 357 private agency nurses working in Newfoundland and Labrador, down from 373 in February, and less than 20 of them are working in the metro St. John's area.
