However if we do not stock the size you require, then we are able to build the size you need - using our innovative 'build your own mattress' service.

Each and every travel cot mattress is built with a folding feature, where you are able to fold the mattress in half for easy storage, travelling & making it a easy stow away size for a plane journey. A zip is located around the back of the mattress, which when unzipped allows the mattress to fold perfectly in half. Your travel cot mattress will arrive to you folded inside its own fabric storage bag. This feature does not compromise the comfort or safety of the mattress.

The handy storage bag is essential for keeping your mattress dust free whilst stored away.

No matter the length & width required for the travel cot mattress (maximum  size up to 105 x 90cm)  we offer two of our premium mattress fillings to choose from. For safety reasons we are restricted on which fillings we can use due to not exceeding a depth of 7cm, as stated by British Safety Standards.

If we had one complaint it would be that this mattress is missing a spare cover, which would be handy in the event of a nighttime accident or spillage. However, you can buy a Snüz Cot Mattress Protector separately for £26.

The main difference is that this mattress comes in cot bed size only, which we think is a more natural fit for this type of baby-to-toddler option. We also love the addition of True Fit corners, the only mattresses we've seen designed with that have perfectly square corners designed to fit neatly into the cot bed frame. Because of this however, there’s no room for manoeuvre - so do triple-check your measurements.

What’s the best type of cot mattress?

There are many types of cot and cot bed mattresses on the market, and they come with many different styles and features. Broadly speaking, here are the five main types of cot mattresses and cot bed mattresses:

Foam cot mattress – good value for money, and generally lightweight and easy to clean.

Coil spring cot mattress – open coil springs surrounded by foam and fillings. Tends to be sturdier than a typical foam mattress.

Pocket spring mattress – springs that are individually wrapped within a cloth sleeve/ Provides good support, but can be pricey.

Coir cot mattress – manufactured from coconut, latex and wool. Naturally firm and durable.

Hollow-frame (Purflo) cot mattress – advertised as fully breathable and fully washable. It’s basically a mesh cover stretched over an open frame. Expensive.

How do I choose a cot mattress?

There are many elements to consider when choosing the best cot mattress:

Safety – what’s the safest cot mattress?

The safest cot mattress is one that’s firm with no sagging and that follows the relevant safety laws. Your chosen mattress should fit the cot snugly with no gaps for stray fingers or tiny toes to get trapped.

Truthfully, the look of a baby cot mattress should always be secondary to safety. There’s no getting around it. You might like ribbons and frou frou around your four-poster bed, but where a child sleeps should be kept simple and unfussy.

According to the National Childbirth Trust , British Safety Standards are your friend and you should specifically look for products conforming to them. Horrible as it is to even think of such a thing, these protocols are in place to reduce the number of accidental infant deaths that occur each year due to strangulation or suffocation.

It’s non-negotiable – whatever you buy, look out for the British Standards’ number on swing tickets and product specifications. Which? recommendations on this state: “All mattresses should have the BS 1877-10:2011+A1:2012 number on the labelling or instructions. It's preferable if it also carries BS 7177:1996 and BS EN 16890:2017 + A1:2021.”

Comfort and safe sleeping

‘Firm and flat’ is your mantra when it comes to cot mattresses. Both the centre and the edges should yield slightly and then spring back into shape when you apply pressure to the surface and then release it.

The general rule of thumb for safe sleeping is to always place your baby to sleep on their back – even if you own a breathable crib mattress. Though mattress manufacturers try to consider babies who roll onto their tummies during sleep, virtually all health professionals advise that back sleeping is safest.

Besides suffocation risk, some studies claim that there's an additional danger from babies breathing in more carbon dioxide than oxygen when they are not sleeping on their backs.

The mattress should also fit the cot snugly, with no gaps that your baby’s limbs could get stuck in - any gaps should be no more than 3cm. In addition, the NCT recommends that, when the mattress is in position, there’s a minimum 50cm clearance to the height of the cot to prevent a mobile baby from climbing out.

Many mattresses have breathable covers, which helps to ensure air is flowing freely and that your baby won’t overheat. You can help keep your baby at the right temperature in the night by investing in good quality cotton bedding ( baby sleeping bags are the easiest) and ensuring that they are always put on their back to sleep, with her arms free. The Lullaby Trust has good advice on safer sleep and reducing the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).

Durability and cleaning

Whether you’re buying a cot mattress, a travel cot mattress or a cot bed mattress, you must make sure that, as a minimum, it’s protected by a waterproof cover to help keep the mattress clean and dry.

The overwhelming testimony of Mumsnetters is that removable, washable zip-on covers are a must. Not only do they allow you to change bedding quickly when accidents occur, but they also prolong the life of your mattress.

This does make them more expensive, however, so if you’re going for a budget model and it doesn’t have a removable cover, it would be well worth buying a separate protective cover for it.

Eco-credentials

There’s no getting around it. Cot mattresses aren’t a buy for life, so lots will end up in landfill. But if you’re fully committed to a green-friendly solution, be careful to read the small print.

While producers such as The Little Green Sheep (see their Twist cot bed mattress above) are admirably transparent, the consumer organisation Which? believes that others play fast and loose with terminology. They say: "Manufacturers can use the terms ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ on products without needing any sort of certification. There are legal requirements for the labelling of organic foods, but not these products.”

Their advice, and ours, is to scrutinise the small print of product specs to ensure that the materials used are truly what they purport to be.

In a sector where a mattress that broadly fulfils the same function can retail from £20 to over £250, getting what you pay for isn’t necessarily a given.

As a rough guide, foam mattresses are cheap and cheerful and not especially hardwearing, but that might be no bad thing if you’re planning to replace them when those little night accidents come to an end.

Spring-interior mattresses are mini versions of typical adult mattresses and coir and Purflo mattresses are part of a subset of innovative, premium-priced ‘green’ products.

If you’re going for a more premium brand, you might want to think about its longevity. Some mattresses will last a child up to four years of age, such as the Snüz Surface Duo Cot Mattress and the Silver Cross True Fit Superior Cot Bed Mattress that we’ve featured in our round-up, so suddenly a slightly hefty price tag doesn’t seem so bad.

Are secondhand cot mattresses safe?

Secondhand mattresses are best avoided – if only because the links between passed-on mattresses and cot death can neither be confirmed nor refuted. In 2002, a BBC story said that researchers at The Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow claimed to have found a "significant” link between having a secondhand mattress and a risk of cot death. No causation was established, but it’s worth bearing in mind.

The Lullaby Trust charity, set up to provide expert advice on safer baby sleep and to raise awareness of SIDs, also cautions risk. They say: “If you’re using a secondhand mattress, make sure the mattress you choose was previously completely protected by a waterproof cover, with no rips or tears and is in good condition. The mattress should also still be firm and flat to keep your baby sleeping safely.” For little brothers and sisters moving onto an elder sibling’s mattress, make sure that you also do these checks.

You should also ensure that the mattress fits well, with no gaps between the mattress and the cot, and that the mattress itself is both clean and dry.

What size should a cot mattress be?

What’s important is that your mattress fits your cot snugly, with no gaps anywhere, so measure twice before you order. The standard size for a cot is 120cm x 60cm and 140cm x 70cm for a cot bed. However, some cots are now oval or even round, so if yours isn’t standard you might need to buy the mattress that's designed to go with it or get one custom-made.

What is the best thickness for a cot mattress?

For support, your choice of cot mattress should be no thinner than 8cm. However, a minimum of 10cm is what most experts, including Which? , recommend.

Travel cot mattresses tend to be much thinner - sometimes only around 5cm - but they aren’t intended for regular use. You can replace your travel cot mattress with a thicker version but do check that it fits exactly or is designed specifically for your travel cot.

Never be tempted to add a pillow or blankets to make it feel softer or thicker as this is unsafe. And if you add a thicker mattress, do check that there is still 50cm from the top of the mattress to the top of the side of the cot.

How do I test that my cot mattress is firm enough?

It’s very important that a baby’s mattress is firm. It’s necessary for their skeletal development and also is vital in ensuring their safety while sleeping. Before you buy, search online to check the mattress hasn’t been recalled and that there are no other problems with it. When it arrives, check the following:

Run your hand across the top surface of the mattress. It should be completely flat, with no bumps, dips or bunched-up bits.

Press with both hands on various spots on the surface of the mattress. When you remove your hands, there should be no indentation remaining. The mattress should spring back immediately.

Again, using both hands, press all around the edges, checking that the edges are all strong and stable and that they don’t collapse and can’t be pushed in on themselves. Take special care to check this at the corners.

How long does a cot mattress last?

The average lifespan of a cot mattress is anything between 0 to 48 months. After that point, it's time to move into a big kid's bed. The best practice is to always buy a new cot mattress for each child.

How do I clean a cot mattress?

Your mattress should come with instructions on how to clean it, so read these carefully. Be especially careful not to shrink the cover, if it has one, as this may lead to it compressing the mattress, creating gaps around the outside.

But essentially, if you want to give the mattress a thorough clean, first remove the cover, wash it according to the instructions and ensure it is thoroughly dry. Some mattresses can be washed themselves, but most are wipe-clean at best.

Vacuum all surfaces of the mattress, paying particular attention to anywhere dust might gather. Then wipe it all over with a damp cloth. If you have a spill to deal with, check the label to see if you can use a little laundry detergent too, then leave the mattress standing on one side to dry thoroughly - outside if possible.

Do I need to flip my baby's cot mattress?

It’s a good idea to rotate your baby’s mattress 180 degrees every month or so, just so that it wears evenly. Most mattresses these days don’t flip.

Some have a special surface for sleeping on that might be water-repellent or hypoallergenic, for example, so that needs to stay on top. Either way, the care instructions that came with the mattress should tell you all you need to know.

Do I need a mattress protector for my cot mattress?

A cot mattress protector is a very good idea, yes. If a nappy overflows in the night and urine soaks into the mattress, this can cause bacteria to develop inside.

Some mattresses come with a removable, washable cover, which is great, but it’s still worth buying a protector to pop on as a spare, in case the cover has to be washed suddenly. A cover will also help to prevent dust mites and other allergens from building up.

First a note on materials: The fabric IS NOT CANVAS but Oxford fabric. This is not meant as a complaint. The two are very comparable, but if you are set on canvas you should be aware of the substitution. Other than that I am very favorably impressed Setup was straightforward and easy for one person. It holds its shape without sagging after several days. Ventilation with the internal vents open is more than adequate. It has stood up to two days of stormy weather admirably; there have been no issues with it standing up to the wind. As the later pictures show it is dry inside. The last photo shows water beaded up on the outside of the tent. The interior is roomy, and I am able to walk around comfortably. There's sufficient space to sleep several people and their gear or to use it in a less common way. It is currently doing service as a blacksmithy. There is still enough ventilation. There is enough room that the forge is in no danger of melting or burning anything. The fact that the floor can be unzipped means I can stay dry and not have to worry about dropping hot metal on fabric. The price is very reasonable for what I received, and Wayfair's customer service has been exemplary. The only complaint I have is that the raincap for the door does not have a big enough hole to fit over the door support. Super easy to set up and break down. Big enough for 1-2 people max. I was able to fit a 6-inch inflatable mattress and not much room to store gear, but enough if you are compact. The easy 2 door entrance was convenient on both sides, and I liked the mesh windows all around. The rain flap worked well on light drizzle, but you need to stake the flap wide in order for moisture to not drip through. Definitely a fare-weather tent, would not recommend for inclement weather since there are not closures for the mesh window, just the mesh doors. I wish it was tall enough to stand up completely, I am 5'3" and had to crouch, or else it would be 5 stars for an easy set-up and break down. Also, the material is good, but I don't think it will last long, it feels flimsy. But for the price, it was a good purchase. Hopefully, it will last for future camping trips.

They feel really strong and sturdy. Definitely while they are in lock mode. The pick at the top feels very strong, and is long enough to put a very sick millimeter tarp or tent cover. The rubber feet at the bottom feel like they will grip to quite a bit of surfaces. They extend as described and lock and place. Also you can use them for angling your tent tarp if you didnt want High sides. They come in a small carry bag the bag is good quality for the price. And they feel light enough to carry on backpack on small trips or on the back of biking. I would recommend these to a friend or family. Definitely when looking out there for other ones this price is more decent and the quality of product is better than others that I have seen.

Compact Pop Up Portable Folding Outdoor Cot

Not easy to transport if you dont have good arm strength. Great carry case, just quite heavy. I used this product for an entire week and was very comfortable sleeping in it alone and also when my daughter joined me one night. We had enough space. I did pump up the air mattress (added some air) a couple of times throughout the week, but didnt have to. I am not sure how the cot would hold up in the rain. I was set up in a protected area. Would be great if there was a pouch inside somewhere where I could have stored my glasses. Overall a great product. I set mine up in the house the first time to make sure I had all the parts and to follow the directions properly. That was a good decision!

I simply gathered three lengthy green branches, carved them to the appropriate size, and arranged them with the apex positioned roughly 3.5 feet above a modest campfire. This makeshift setup served as a perfect hanging spot for my cooking pot, allowing me to prepare a hearty stew. When finished, everything neatly tucked back into the pouch, and we left the branches behind. Now, I store it snugly within my cooking pot kit for convenient storage. Remarkably lightweight and compact, it's an excellent investment for hikers and campers alike.

I purchased this, so when my grandchildren sleep over, they have a place to lay. I had it open in the living room and my 22-year-old has slept on this two nights in a row. It’s clearly not meant to be a permanent bed situation but it sure is nice for a single person or two toddlers. It’s firm yet comfortable according to my son. We’ve also decided it’s more comfortable than a sofa sleeper because there’s no metal racks going into your back.  I also like the fact that it can fold up and go into the carry bag very easily. If you’re looking for a temporary bed for a guest Iwould recommend this.

My tent arrived EARLY :-) and intact with no visible damage. I live in upstate NY and I am unable to erect it and therfore I did not open it yet. I am traveling to Florida to camp for a month (primitive). I have a close friend who owns this exact tent and It is a solid unit. Unfortunately, I can not give feedback about this specific tent ai purchased because it won't be opened until February 4th. It's packed already and excited to use my new yurt. • Foam: Typically made from polyurethane foam, also known as polyfoam or memory foam, these travel cot mattress types usually range from medium to firm. A firmer sleep surface is generally recommended for young infants, so it’s always advisable to check that there is no sinking or contouring, particularly around the infant’s head.

It's worth noting that you may have some options for the covers on travel cot mattresses. Some brands offer more natural material options- like cotton or latex, which are advertised as more breathable and hypoallergenic fabrics. While this is true for many organic materials, always read the labels and not be swayed by clever marketing.

Why Sleep Is So Important For Infants

Sleep is essential for optimal cognitive and physical growth. In infants, sleep is a highly dynamic process which means the brain is very active - building important connections and foundations for our overall growth.

Infant sleep is related to our  social-emotional development✓ , cognition and physical growth, and even our  immune system✓ . Insufficient sleep in infants has been  associated✓  with attention, behaviour, and learning problems and linked to obesity, hypertension, and diabetes later in childhood.

The importance of infant sleep should not be underestimated, whether at home or travelling. Infants can be very attached to their routine and schedules, which makes maintaining their bedding set up an important factor. The correct travel cot mattress can be a significant factor in keeping the bedding set up as close to home as possible. 

Did you know? A study✓  investigating cross-cultural sleep patterns and sleep problems showed that children ages birth to 36 months from predominantly-Asian countries had significantly later bedtimes, shorter total sleep times than children from predominantly-Caucasian countries.

A Note On SIDS

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is described as the sudden and unexpected death of a baby less than 1-year of age. Although SIDS is rare and relatively low-risk✓ , it is useful to understand how it is caused and measures we can take to avoid it.

Interesting to know... Research✓ in the UK has shown boys to be more at risk of SIDS than girls.

The exact cause of SIDS is unknown; however,  evidence shows✓  a combination of external triggers (such as sleep position or blocked airway), a critical development period, and immature/dysfunctional cardiorespiratory and /or arousal systems lead to the failure of protective responses. If these factors "occur" at the same time, it may lead to a combination of lack of blood flow to the brain, slowed heart rate, lowered blood pressure, metabolic issues, and death.

Simply put,  SIDS may result from the combination✓  of a vulnerable infant and a potentially dangerous sleep environment - highlighting the importance of a safe home cot and travel cot mattress.

Good to know! After the launch of many public health campaigns to promote back sleeping position for infants ✓ , dramatic decreases in SIDS in all participating countries were observed.

Jet Lag In Infants

The Journal Of Travel Medicine states✓ that jet lag has been reported as less of an issue in young travellers because of their “ adherence to natural circadian rhythms✓ ”. However, they do go on to state that infants and children who are used to a specific sleeping schedule may experience difficulty in adjusting to a new sleep cycle - something to which I’m sure many parents will attest.

A quick look online will tell you, “yes, babies definitely do get jet lag”, and, ultimately, whether we refer to it as jet lag or not, there are a few things we can do to minimise the adjustment period.

• When, and if possible, travelling during the day and when they are usually awake is always helpful.
• Adjusting sleep and meal patterns as best as possible during travel and arrival at the destination - setting your watch to the destination time zone is a good idea.
• Its often recommended to gradually shift an infant’s or toddler’s sleep schedule 2 or 3 days before travel.
• Exposure to the sun (or bright lights) in the morning when travelling east and in the afternoon when travelling west.
• Hydrate with fluids - air in aeroplane cabins can be dry - staying hydrated will make everyone feel better.
• Scheduling more relaxed, less busy days soon after your arrival is advised to give everyone time to adjust.
• Familiar toys from home and a safe and comfortable travel cot mattress will aid in helping your infant to feel relaxed, content, and secure.

What size is a travel cot mattress?

Travel cot mattresses vary in size and are often smaller than the standard UK cot size mattress ( 120x60cm). It is always best to measure the travel cot to be sure - different brands offer various sizes.

How to clean a travel cot mattress?

Different mattresses will have different care instructions - many have removable, machine-washable covers, some can be tumble-dried. Always be sure to check the washing instructions before.

How thick should a travel cot mattress be?

Travel cot mattresses are often thinner (from 4cm upwards) than regular cot mattresses to facilitate easy folding and transportation. This is fine for an infant provided the mattress is offering sufficient firmness.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.
