EXACTLY How To Get From Kuala Lumpur To Melaka [2024]

Are you planning a Melaka day trip from KL? One of the best destinations you can head to for a quick day trip or an unforgettable weekend getaway is Melaka, also spelt as Malacca.

This UNESCO listed city is known for its stunning architecture, world heritage sites and mouth-watering cuisine. It’s also known as one of the most popular holiday destinations in Malaysia.

Getting to Melaka from KL, you need to travel either by bus, train, taxi, or private car. As the town can get busy, especially during weekends and the holiday season, it helps if you plan your trip beforehand.

Similarly, you can also get a direct transfer from Kuala Lumpur airport to Melaka. The distance from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka is not far so you can even go for a day trip.

The following KL to Melaka map shows you exactly how you can travel to and from these destinations.

In this map, KL to Melaka distance is approximately 145 km and about 2 hours driving time, depending on traffic.

BEST OPTION: How To Get From Kuala Lumpur To Melaka

The fastest and most convenient way to travel between KL and Melaka is to take a taxi.

If you’re travelling on a budget and looking for a cheaper alternative then travel via bus.

Here’s a summary of all your options:

Option 1: Bus From KL To Melaka

Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS)

The most cost-efficient way to get to Melaka is to travel via bus.

If you’re wondering how to go to Melaka from KL by bus, or how to catch a bus to Melaka from Kuala Lumpur, head to the right bus station from KL to Melaka ‒ the Terminal Bersepadu Selatan .

Here, you can find several bus lines and bus operators that offer direct trips from TBS KL to Melaka. You can buy the ticket onsite, or purchase a Kuala Lumpur to Melaka bus ticket online in advance to avoid the hassle.

Click here to see the timetables and prices.

Buses depart very regularly with an approximate travel time of 2.5 hours. They leave around every 30 minutes depending on the concentration of passengers. One of the most popular bus lines is the Delima bus KL to Melaka.

The bus ticket price from KL to Melaka or the Kuala Lumpur to Melaka bus fare starts at RM12.

Despite running regularly, on weekends and holiday times, these buses do fill up so buy a ticket in advance . Just recently, my brother tried to take this bus on a holiday weekend and ended up waiting 12 hours to get on one that had a free seat!

.Alternatively, if you’re coming from KL Sentral, you can take the Komuter train first to TBS then head from KL to Melaka by bus.

From KL Sentral, get off at Bandar Tasik Selatan (BTS) Station. This will take approximately 22 minutes.

Then, from there, take the bus from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) that will drop you to Melaka Sentral Bus Terminal.

It’s also possible to take a direct bus from KL airport to Melaka.

The Transnasional and Starmart Express bus lines offer a bus Kuala Lumpur airport to Melaka. This runs every couple of hours across the day. However, make sure to check the bus schedule KL to Melaka in advance to make sure it can work with your flights.

Click here to check the schedule and ticket prices from KL Airport to Melaka.

If you’re coming from the KLIA airport, head to the KLIA Bus Station . Meanwhile, if you’re in the KLIA2 airport, go directly to the Transportation Hub to catch a KL airport to Melaka bus. The journey time is similar at around 2.5 hours.

Whether you are taking the bus from TBS or the airport, you’ll most probably find yourself at Melaka Sentral bus station on arrival.

Melaka Sentral is a few kilometres north of the main tourist area in Melaka and where your hotel probably is. You’ll need to catch another bus in or take a taxi. Using the Grab app is the best way to do the latter.

If you want to take a bus, check out Google maps when you arrive at Melaka Sentral and it can give you the next bus to leave and where from. Many head towards the centre, but most won’t take you to a convenient spot. It’ll usually involve some walking.

All up, this option will end up taking you around four hours.

Option 2: Kuala Lumpur To Melaka Train

travel malacca to kuala lumpur

If you’re not in a hurry, another alternative is to take a train from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka. Just note that there is no direct train to Melaka from KL. To catch the closest thing to a KL to Melaka train, you have to take the train then a taxi.

I do not recommend choosing this option. It’s only here for absolute train buffs who want to understand what their options are.

If you want to travel from KL Sentral to Melaka by train, first you need to take the train from KL Sentral to Pulau Sebang/Tampin.  There are ETS (Electric Train Service) and Komter train options. The former takes about two hours and the latter, 2.75 hours.

The ETS runs only twice a day and costs about RM24. The Komuter currently has a very early departure option from KL Sentral then no departures until the evening. It costs around RM14.

The entire train ride takes about 2 hours, and costs RM24. Hourly trips are available.

Click here to see timetables and prices.

Once in Pulau Sebang, you can then ride a taxi that will drop you off to Melaka. This takes about an hour. Use Grab if you decide to do this and hope there is a driver nearby.

It’s also possible to take a bus to Melaka Sentral. These also don’t run often and take about an hour and a half. Look for bus 1A or 1B. From Melaka Sentral, you’ll need to take another bus to the centre of Melaka. See instructions in the bus section above.

The drawback of getting from KL to Melaka by train is that there could be significant delays in your overall travel time. It’s also not the best option if you’re sticking to a more rigid itinerary. It could end up taking you a day if you want to stick to public transport.

Option 3: Taxi From KL To Melaka

KLCC Park with Petronas Twin Towers

Another option that you can take to get to Melaka from KL is to take a taxi. This is the best option thanks to being so comfortable and easy.

It takes about 2 hours of travel time, and the Kuala Lumpur to Melaka taxi fare is approximately RM450. If you’re coming from the airport, you can take a Kuala Lumpur airport to Melaka taxi for about RM350.

The advantage of taking the taxi Kuala Lumpur to Melaka is that you won’t have to worry about driving to an unfamiliar area and a more experienced driver will be taking you there. This is also a convenient option if you have a lot of luggage with you.

It allows you to make the most of your day instead of lugging around your luggage in the heat and humidity.

We can book this taxi for you with a reliable local operator. Click here for more information and prices.

You can take this from the city or straight from the airport and can be dropped off directly at your hotel in Melaka.

You could also book a return journey and take a day trip to Melaka.

You can read our full guide to taking a taxi between KL and Melaka here.

Option 4: From KL To Melaka By Car

travel malacca to kuala lumpur

If you want to travel from KL to Melaka by car, note that the distance from KL to Melaka is 145 km and will take approximately two hours.

Taking a private car with you is a great option because it will be easier to go from one attraction in Melaka to another or if you want to do a day trip, it can help you maximise your time.

However, a potential drawback of taking your own vehicle, of course, is that it could be costly, especially for backpackers and budget travelers.

How long does it take to get from Malacca to Kuala Lumpur by Train?

Travel time from Malacca to Kuala Lumpur is estimated to be about 2h 16m. Trains ensure the fastest time to travel by land. As normally there is no congestion, the speed of travel is more or less constant and stops at train stations are rather short, train is almost always one of the quickest and safest ways to get from Malacca and Kuala Lumpur.

The most important thing that may affect train travel time is the type of train. Ordinary trains travel at a speed of about 40 mph or 65 km/h to 65 mph or 105 km/h. Some intercity trains with shorter distances between stations run slower than 40 mph. Even with these low speeds, it can still be faster than commuting by car, bus or taxi.

The speed of express trains can reach up to 100 mph or 160 km/h. Modern high-speed trains can run at speeds exceeding 250 mph or 400 km/h.

Best-Rated Companies for this Route

Unlike buses or taxis which have numerous companies offering their services, train service is usually offered by just one major company in each country. As railway service requires a large amount of infrastructure, most railway companies are government-owned and are a part of the national transport system.

One of the best advantages of travelling by train is that railway stations are often conveniently located within or very near major cities and urban areas. Immediately on arrival to their destination, travellers find themselves in close proximity to important facilities like hotels, supermarkets, and hospitals.

If you travel with a lot of bags and luggage, trains are your best option. Luggage weight limits on trains are rather flexible and allow you to carry multiple bags with you.

Special or luxury trains feature sufficient legroom which allows you to stretch your legs and relax. In comfort and space these train seats can be compared to business class airplane seats.

Similar to buses, trains can provide a variety of amenities to make your travel more comfortable and enjoyable. Modern trains have WIFI service, a snack counter and a drinking bar. Onboard toilets can be a life saver for travellers with queasy stomachs.

Lastly, unlike buses and other overland means of transport, trains are very rarely involved in accidents.

Taxi to the City

The easiest, and most expensive, way to do this journey is to take a taxi. Local taxi services which wait at the train station are relatively expensive and generally they will not take passengers on this 35 minute journey for less than 70 MYR. If there are other passengers you can share the cost with then the journey by taxi becomes much better value for money. Uber or Grab taxi services are also a lot cheaper.

Train at Pulau Sebang - Tampin Railway Station

Bus to the City

You can, however, also take a local bus from Tampin to Malacca. Rather than walk all the way to Tampin Bus Station to board a bus to Malacca we recommend that you walk the much shorter distance to the bus stop on the main road in front of the car park of the Mydin Pulau Sebang Hypermarket. The bus fare in 5 MYR per person and the journey takes between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours depending upon how many detours the driver makes on route.

The point of arrival in Malacca is Melaka Sentral Bus Station , which is inconveniently located 4.1 km from the historic centre of the city. Local bus number 17 travels from the bus station to the centre of Melaka, however, this local bus service tends to be unreliable and most leisure travellers arriving by bus choose to take a taxi into the city centre, which costs around 15 MYR and is a lot quicker.

How to Go from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur – Melaka to KL Options

Going from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur is a pretty easy trip.  We had, after all, transited in the opposite direction to get here, and so we were heading back to Malaysia’s capital city to move on to our next destination.  The old part of Melaka, by Christ Church, is where we (and most others) were staying, and so this guide covers going from Christchurch Melaka to KL.  You have a couple of different options to go to KL from Melaka, and what you choose will likely depend on how much time you have and what your budget is Here’s our guide on how to get to Kuala Lumpur from Melaka.

How to Go from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur – Transport Options

In this guide on how to go from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur, we’ll cover the fastest way to travel from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur, the easiest way to go to Kuala Lumpur from Melaka, and the cheapest way to get to Kuala Lumpur from Melaka.  As most people will start in Melaka from near Christ Church, we’ll also cover getting from there to the bus station at Melaka Sentral too.  You can choose to travel into the center of Kuala Lumpur or go from Melaka to the airport in Kuala Lumpur. There are no trains that come to Melaka, so your options are buses or private transfers.  Our guide on the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur is here.

How to get to Kuala Lumpur from Melaka

I’ll start with the quickest option for getting to KL from Melaka, and that’s a private transfer to KL.  If you’re taking public transport, then all the buses that leave from Melaka leave from Melaka Sentral, so you’ll need to get there first from your accommodation and I’ll cover this in that particular section.

Taxi from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur

Taking a private taxi to Kuala Lumpur from Melaka is one of the fastest ways to go to Kuala Lumpur.  It is the most comfortable way to travel.  It will take you about 2 hours to go from Melaka to KL in a taxi.  And it will collect you from your hotel and drop you at your destination in KL.   You can check prices for Melaka to Kuala Lumpur taxis here.

Buses from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur

Taking the bus from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur is both the cheapest and the most popular way to go between these two destinations.  It’s not a difficult journey.  First, you will need to get to Melaka Sentral Bus Station where the buses to KL leave from.

Melaka Christchurch to Melaka Sentral

It is 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) from Melaka Christchurch to Melaka Sentral Bus Station, so yes you can walk it, but it’s usually hot and sweaty and not the nicest of walks.   You can take an Uber or Grab to go from Melaka Christ Church to Melaka Sentral or you can take the town bus.

The town bus in Melaka runs on a loop (we’d ridden it when we came from Cameron Highlands to Melaka ) and now took it in reverse to start our trip back to Kuala Lumpur.

There are a host of different buses that run to various areas in Melaka.  If you’re coming or going to the historic district then you need Bus 17.  We picked it up from outside Christ Church, and this bus runs on a loop so you’ll get a 20-minute or so tour around the outskirts of Melaka if you get on there before the bus loops back around and passes by the end of Jonkers Walk.

Melaka Sentral to Kuala Lumpur

At Melaka Sentral, there are a host of booths to buy tickets to KL.  And there are around 40 buses a day that go from Melaka to KL, so you’ll have a choice of time.  We opted for a 13:00 bus as it was the next one that we could get tickets for.  That meant we had lunch at the Melaka Sentral.  And we’d opted for a bus that would drop us off at the bus station in China Town, KL, not KL Sentral.

Kuala Lumpur is enormous, so if you’re taking the bus, make sure you pick one that drops you somewhere vaguely near where you want to be, otherwise you’ll likely spend as much time (and money) getting across KL!

The first bus from Melaka Sentral to KL leaves at 05:30 and the last bus leaves Melaka Sentral at 23:45 bound for KL.

You can check the times and prices for buses from Melaka to KL here.

Buses to KL from Melaka take about 2 hours and 20 minutes, depending on which bus station you’re going to in Kuala Lumpur.  You can usually choose to go to KL Sentral or KL TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) and there are 11 different bus companies that run these routes.  I don’t know that any of them are any better or worse than the others.  We usually choose the time that we want to go and then opt for the company that goes at that time!

Bus from KL to Melaka (Malacca)

The best way to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka is by bus since it’s the cheapest and most convenient option.

The bus ticket from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka costs about RM 10 or more, depending on the bus company.

The bus departs every 15 minutes from 2:50 a.m to 9:30 p.m. It should take about 2.5 hours to get to Melaka from KL by bus.

CHECK BUS SCHEDULE AND PRICES HERE

I traveled several times to Melaka from Kuala Lumpur by bus and used different bus companies like Delima Express, StarMart Express, Melor Interline, and KKKL.

I found most of them similar in terms of price, comfort, and service. All of them have reclining seats and decent leg room. Luckily, most of them depart on time but some may be delayed by 5-10 minutes.

Below is a step-by-step guide on how to take the bus from KL to Melaka:

The bus terminal from which you will depart is called Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS).

To get there, you first need to take a bus or MRT to KL Sentral . If you prefer to travel by taxi or Grab, you can ask the driver to drop you off directly at TBS (see step 4).

From KL Sentral, take the KLIA Transit to Bandar Tasik Selatan .

Walk about 10-15 minutes from Bandar Tasik Selatan to TBS. You will see the pink sign in the photo below as soon as you get out of the train station at Bandar Tasik Selatan.

Go up the escalator and follow the signs to Terminal Bersepadu Selatan TBS (blue bus sign).

escalator leading to Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) in KL

You’ll eventually reach a covered bridge. Keep walking until you see a sliding door which is the entrance to Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS).

Head to the counter to buy your KL to Malacca bus ticket. There are usually lots of people waiting in line, so if you want to save time, I recommend buying your bus ticket in advance here .

people queuing at the ticket counter at Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) to get from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca

Once you get your ticket, walk to your designated gate and board the bus.

After 2.5 hours, you’ll arrive at Melaka Sentral , which is about a 20-minute drive from the Dutch Square where most hotels and attractions are found.

You have two options to get from Melaka Sentral to the Dutch Square: public bus or Grab taxi.

Personally, I found Grab to be more convenient since it’s faster and costs only about RM 8. If you’re on a budget, you can instead take the bus No. 17. It departs every 30 minutes and costs about RM 2 ( check the route and schedule here).

Alternatively, you can also take the bus from Kuala Lumpur Airport to Melaka.

StarMart Express is the main bus company that serves the KLIA to Melaka bus route between 8:15 a.m and 6:15 p.m. The bus ticket from KL Airport to Malacca costs RM 35 and the journey lasts about 2.5-3 hours.

The StarMart Express buses will drop you off at Melaka Sentral or Mahkota Medical Centre, the latter being closer to the Dutch Square. You can check the schedule and drop-off location here.

Note that the price will be the same whether you book your ticket online or in person. Still, I recommend booking your bus ticket online to save time and ensure that you get a seat on the bus.

Below is a step-by-step guide on how to take the bus from KLIA to Melaka:

Exit the customs area and turn right at the sign showing the way to “Stesen Bas Bus Station”.

Take the elevator down to Level 1 and walk toward the KLIA 1 bus terminal building.

Head toward the counter to buy your ticket. If you’ve booked your ticket online , you’ll need to redeem your ticket here.

Walk to your designated gate and board the bus.

Follow step 6 above to get from Melaka Sentral to the Dutch Square.

Kuala Lumpur to Melaka by Car

Another way of getting to Melaka is by car. One main advantage of renting a car in Malaysia is that you can stop wherever you like.

There are a few attractions right outside of Melaka City Center like the Melaka Zoo , Skytrex Adventure , Bayou Lagoon Water Park , or A’Famosa Water Theme Park that you can check out on your way to Melaka from KL.

The distance between Kuala Lumpur and Melaka is about 140 km and the driving time is about 2 hours.

Taxi from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka

If you’re not renting a car, the next best option is to hire a taxi from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca.

For convenience, I recommend that you book your private taxi online . This includes pick up from any hotel in Kuala Lumpur and drop off at any hotel or location in Melaka.

CHECK PRICE FOR A PRIVATE TAXI FROM KL TO MELAKA

You can also take a Grab taxi from Kuala Lumpur Airport but this option is less reliable as not all drivers will be willing to go all the way to Melaka.

The first time I went to Melaka, I had to wait over 30 minutes to get a Grab as most of the drivers kept canceling on me. This is why I think it’s best to pre-book your taxi online to avoid any hassle.

Melaka Guided Tour from KL

If you’re only planning to take a day trip to Melaka and don’t mind joining a group tour, I recommend taking this Melaka historical tour from KL .

The tour duration is about 10 hours and includes visits to all the main attractions in Melaka, transfers to and from your hotel in KL, lunch, and an English-speaking guide.

KL to Melaka by train

The final option is to take the train. Honestly, this isn’t the best option as there is no direct train from KL to Melaka.

You’ll need to board the train at KL Sentral and it will drop you off in Batang Melaka, about a 1-hour drive from the city center.

Top tip: Need more space? Watch out for the executive 2+1 buses. These have two seats on one side of the bus and one seat on the other side of the bus. These seats are wider and offer a little more leg room.

KL to Malacca train route

aeroplane from bangkok to Chiang Mai

It is possible to take a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca. However, we do not recommend this option; most flights cost around £80 or more and take at least 4 hours with one stop in Penang. Many flights take a lot longer than 4 hours, therefore a flight may actually be slower and less convenient than a bus. Furthermore, not only is a flight more expensive and potentially slower you also need to consider your baggage allowance. Many airlines that operate this route have a very minimal baggage allowance.

The Early History area is where you can see the remains of the Perak Man, one of the oldest skeletons found. The Malay Kingdoms tells the story of Malacca and how it was formed. The colonial Era depicts the era from which Malaysia was under the colonization of the Portuguese until the Japanese. Malaysia Today shows what Malaysia has gone through since World War II. Aside from that, the National Museum also has several small free galleries that may spark some interest such as the Orang Asli Craft gallery and Malay World Ethnology Museum which features batik and other fabrics.

6. Bank Negara Malaysia Museum

What makes the world go around? Money. And who doesn’t love money. The Bank Negara Malaysia Museum on Jalan Dato’ Onn is where all you coin and money collectors must go.
