MELBOURNE AIRPORT TO CITY CENTER: The Cheapest & Easiest Way

MELBOURNE AIRPORT TO CITY CENTER: The Cheapest & Easiest Way

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Melbourne is one of Australia’s most popular tourist destination, so it is not surprising that Melbourne Airport is also one of the busiest airports in the continent. From 2016 to 2017 alone, the airport served over 25 million domestic and 10 million international passengers.

The Melbourne Airport is sometimes called Tullamarine Airport because it is located in the suburb called Tullamarine, around 20 km northeast of the city’s central business district (CBD). It takes 20-45 minutes to travel between the airport and the CBD, depending on the traffic situation.

There are plenty of options to reach the city center. Taxi and Uber are obviously the most convenient modes of transportation. But in this article, we’ll focus on the more economical option — the bus. You have two choices: the SkyBus and the public bus.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

BY SKYBUS: The Fast, Easy Way

The most convenient way to travel between the airport and the city center is by taking the SkyBus Express Airport Transfers , which is a double-decker bus that runs for 24 hours (varying frequencies throughout the day). The journey lasts 30-45 minutes, depending on traffic.

You can book a SkyBus ticket via the electronic ticket machines at the SkyBus stop at the airport or online. The machines don’t accept cash but accepts credit cards. Fare: AUD 19.75, one-way; AUD 38, roundtrip.

You can score a slight discount if you book online ahead of time.

Here’s how to get to Melbourne CBD via Skybus.

  • After emerging from the Immigration and Customs inspection area, head to the terminal exit to your right.
  • Exit the terminal building until you see the SkyBus stop outside. The place is screaming with red Skybus signs; it’s impossible to miss it. You’ll know you’re at the right place when you see the electronic ticket kiosks and a ticket booth.
  • Purchase a ticket if you don’t have one yet. You can also purchase one online.
  • Fall in line and wait for your bus. Make sure you’re boarding the MELBOURNE CITY EXPRESS if your hotel is in the CBD. Note that there are separate buses for St. Kilda and Southbank/Docklands.
  • Board the bus. It’s a double decker. There are spots where you can store your suitcases on the lower deck. Travel time: 30-45 minutes.
  • Get off at Southern Cross Station.
  • Make your way to the hotel.

The SkyBus bound for Melbourne CBD terminates at Southern Cross Station on the edge of the district. If your hotel is nearby, you can just walk from the station. This is just one of the reasons why the Southern Cross area is the best place to stay in the city.

If your hotel is closer to Central Station, here are your options.

  • FREE SkyBus Link Hotel Transfer. If you’re arriving between 6:30am and 7:30pm, you can avail of the complimentary transfer from Southern Cross Station to a stop near your hotel. This is FREE-OF-CHARGE for those who took the SkyBus. It operates 7 days a week, 06:30 to 19:30. You can find the stop closest to your hotel here .
  • Tram. Tram is FREE within CBD. But since it’s your first day in the city, you might find the tram system to be a little confusing. It’s also not ideal if you have luggage in tow because most routes involve some walking too. I tried it on my first day and got lost. Haha.
  • Uber. Cheaper than taxi. I have tried this once and I paid AUD 8.60 for the ride from my hotel near Central to Southern Cross.
  • Taxi. I was able to try this too. I paid AUD 10.6 from Southern Cross to Central.
  • Train. The train runs from 5am-12mn, Monday to Thursday, and all night Fridays and weekends. Fare: AUD 4.40 (2-hour minimum fare).

BY PUBLIC BUS: The Cheap, Long Way

Not a lot of people know about this, but yes, it is possible to reach Melbourne CBD by taking public transportation. It is also very cheap; the fare is only A$4.40. The catch is, it takes double or triple the amount of time that the SkyBus takes to get there.

If you’re interested on taking this route, the first thing you should do is purchase a myki , an electronic reloadable smart card that is used in all public transportation services in Melbourne. Cash isn’t accepted. But don’t worry, you’ll be able to use that card again when you explore the city. The card itself costs A$6, but you will need to top it up with more credits. On top of the card fee, the fare to CBD is A$4.40.

Once you have a myki card, follow these directions:

  • Head to the terminal exit to your right after emerging from the Immigration and Customs inspection area, .
  • Exit the terminal building and walk until you reach Terminal 4 (Budget Terminal), where the public bus stop is located.
  • Wait for Bus 901. Aside from 901, the sign on the bus also reads “Frankston”. This is NOT a 24-hour service. The first bus of the day leaves at around 6:30am. See updated schedule by checking out PTV’s Journey Planner .
  • Board Bus 901. Don’t forget to touch on your myki card by hovering it in front of the sensor.
  • Alight at Broadmeadows Station. Travel time is around 15 minutes. Touch off your myki.
  • Walk to Broadmeadows Station. This should take around 5 minutes. Enter the station, touch on your myki card, and wait for your train.
  • Take the train to Southern Cross Station. Travel time is 30 minutes, excluding the waiting time. If your hotel is near Southern Cross, touch off, exit the station and walk to your hotel. If your hotel is near Melbourne Central Station, you will need to switch to another platform and transfer to another train. Then get off at Central Station.

The total travel time including the waits can last 1.5 hours. If you’re arriving in the evening, it’s best to avoid this route because the buses will be few and far between. If arriving in the wee hours, skip this and just take the SkyBus instead.

The 5 Best Ways To Get From The Melbourne Airport to the CBD

travel melbourne airport to cbd

Your plane has finally touched down at the Melbourne Airport -- now you need to get to the Central Business District. So which mode of transportation will work best for you?

The airport is located 22 kilometres north-west of the city centre, near the industrial suburb of Tullamarine. So it’s not nearly as close to downtown as the Sydney Airport is.

So the best way to get from the Melbourne Airport to the CBD really depends on how you’d like to travel. So let’s look at some of your options:

1. The Most Convenient Option – Skybus

travel melbourne airport to cbd

The Skybus service is a 24/7 shuttle that runs to and from the Coach Terminal at Southern Cross Station, which is located on Spencer Street in the Central Business District. There are two locations at the airport where you can be picked up by the shuttle – either next to the Virgin Australia terminal or the Qantas/Jetstar domestic terminal.

To purchase tickets you can use the ticket desks at T1 and T3, or purchase tickets electronically from the driver. The trip to the CBD will only take around 20 minutes and it will cost $18 for a one way journey or $30 for a return.

The shuttles will depart every 10 minutes, except between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. when they leave every half hour.

2. The Cheapest Option – Public Transport Victoria

This is a much slower, but cheaper option to get from the airport to downtown Melbourne, which will cost you $7 on weekdays and $3.50 on the weekends. Go to the Skybus terminal and buy a Myki Card.

Exit the terminal and walk across the first road, turning left and walking to the end of the platform at T1. Catch the bus number 901 to Broadmeadows Station. The sign on the bus should say “Frankston”. At the Broadmeadows Station, switch to a train. It is also possible to catch the bus to Essendon, Moonee Ponds and Sunbury.

3. The Most Independent Option: Hire A Car

If you want to be able to travel more independently during your visit to Melbourne, you might consider hiring a car. You can find one at the airport as there are several car rental operators.

The driving routes to the city are quite straightforward and the turn offs are well signposted. However, keep in mind that many of the hotels in the city will charge you for parking.

4. The Fastest Option: Taxi

Probably the quickest way to get from the airport directly to your hotel is to jump in a taxi cab.

It will leave as soon as you are ready and drive you exactly where you want to go. You can catch a taxi from the designated taxi ranks at the airport, which are located on the ground floor outside Terminal 1 and between Terminal 3 and 2. Check out this taxi fare estimator to give yourself an idea of what it will cost to get to your hotel.

5. The Most Luxurious Option: limo

If you really want to arrive in Melbourne with style, why not hire a limo? The prices for a limo rental can range between $80 and $150, depending on what type of vehicle you choose and where in Melbourne city you are travelling to. This is a bit pricey, but if it is a special occasion it’s a fun way to treat yourself!

Which one of these 5 ways to get from Melbourne Airport to the CBD suits you the best? Let us know in the comments below.

melbourne airport to city centre: the quickest way

All the routes to get from Melbourne Airport to the City Centre

  • Post author By Anna Maria Parente
  • Post date August 28, 2020

We know it, tomorrow you’ll leave for the legendary Melbourne, but you’ve never been there before, and you want to know how to get from Melbourne Airport to the City Centre as quickly as possible and at the lowest price. Sit back and relax, here you’ll find all the information you need to know!

Melbourne Airport (also known as Tullamarine Airport ) is 22 km away from what is called the CBD (Central Business District) and is located in the suburb of Tullamarine.

Despite its distance from the City Centre, Tullamarine Airport boasts excellent connections to the Central district and other Melbourne areas.

Thanks to our guide, you’ll be able to plan your trip with care and choose the route that best meets your needs.

How do I get from Melbourne Airport to CBD?

melbour airport to cbd: the fastest solutions

  • Shuttle Bus
  • Public Transport
  • Uber or car rental
  • Airport transfer

Unfortunately, Melbourne city Airport has no train station (although the idea is being discussed).

Whether you’re arriving from the domestic area of the airport or you’ve traveled a long way to beautiful Australia, you’ll find a SkyBus waiting for you just outside the main entrance .

Once arrived, reach the SkyBus stops at Terminal 1 (Qantas domestic and QantasLink), T3 (Virgin, Regional Express, and all international flights), and T4 (Jetstar and Tigerair domestic).

SkyBus is a red bus with the brand name in white that operates every day and runs every 10 minutes . It connects you directly to the CBD and also provides a free City Hotel Shuttle.

SkyBus services take you to other neighborhoods of Melbourne, such as Docklands, St Kilda, Southbank, Frankston and Peninsula, and Western suburbs.

Due to the Covid-2019 emergency , the SkyBus schedule may be changed, read updated information on the official website.

Melbourne Airport transfers: SkyBus price

SkyBus has a fixed price of A$19.75 (one way) . You can purchase your ticket using your mobile phone (store and scan it when boarding). On SkyBus, there are no hidden costs or excess bag charges.

In addition, onboard, there’s a powerful and free WIFI connection .

SkyBus tickets are available online or at a SkyBus ticket office at Melbourne Airport and Southern Cross Station.

To buy your ticket you can also use the dedicated app .

How long does it take to reach the CBD?

It takes 20 to 40 minutes to reach the city center with SkyBus . As Melbourne is a bustling city, you’ll have to consider the traffic and rush hours.

In the city, SkyBus stops at Southern Cross Station , which is located near Marvel Stadium, Queen Victoria Market, and the Aquarium.

Getting from Melbourne Airport to the City Centre by public buses – the cheapest option

Tullamarine Airport: discover Melbourne

As you know, before arriving at your hotel, you’ll have to get off at the right stop, then walk and maybe take another bus.

However, there are some positive aspects. With public transport, you can visit the city from a comfortable seat!

Line 478, 479 and 482

The lines connecting the airport and city are 478, 479, and 482.

However, before you venture on a public bus, check what areas of the city it reaches.

Here all the information you need to know:

  • 478: West Shopping Centre to Melbourne Airport (via Melrose Drive).
  • 479: West Shopping Centre to Sunbury Station (via Melbourne Airport).
  • 482: West Shopping Centre to Melbourne Airport (via South Centre Road).

Line 901 (Smart Bus)

Line 901 provides a frequent connection between Melbourne Airport and Broadmeadows Station . The journey takes about 20 minutes , but allow more time during rush hours .

Buses 901 run every 15 minutes (7 days a week) between Melbourne Airport and Frankston via Broadmeadows, Roxburgh Park, Epping, and Greensborough.

At Melbourne Airport, all Route 901 buses depart from the bus terminal outside Terminal 4 .

For further information about pricing, check the myki Explorer website.

From Melbourne Airport to CBD by taxi

taxi to melbourne cbd: pricing table

Thanks to the taxi, you can go from the airport directly to your hotel and, to be honest, if you have made a long trip and you feel tired, the cab is definitely the best way to move around.

Although more expensive, costs can be shared if you travel with your friends or family.

Taxi drivers can help you with your luggage and make your day even more comfortable. Moreover, taxi travel is perfect now, since all cars are scrupulously sanitized .

In Melbourne, as well as in many other cities, the world’s most famous yellow cars can also be booked in advance and will be ready to collect you in the outdoor section of each terminal car park .

How much costs a taxi in Melbourne?

The price of a taxi in Melbourne depends on several factors. These are the route to be traveled, the journey time and the taxi fare valid in Melbourne, and, if applicable, the time. From these components, the taxi price can be calculated.

On average, it costs A$55-65 , including the airport tax of A$4.50 . You can also make an estimate of your trip, depending on the destination address, thanks to this convenient service .

Uber from Melbourne Airport

Another very comfortable way to get from Melbourne Airport to the CBD is by booking with Uber, the transportation network well-known for its ride-hailing taxi app.

You can find pickup areas in terminals 1, 2, and 3 by following the signs “Uber Pickup Zone” .

Of course, to look for a car you’ll need to download the app (available for Android or iOS ).

A ride from Melbourne Tullamarine Airport to Melbourne’s CBD is $45-$58 . If you have requested a UberXL, the price goes up ($65-$83).

Thank you for reading our article and trusting us! If you want to have information about other airport connections, you can search our blog for the city you are interested in !
