50 Inspirational Travel Quotes to Ignite the Wanderlust in You
As a child gazing at a world map, I would daydream about exploring every exotic shore on the horizon. However, embarking on my first transatlantic journey revealed how challenging travel can also be. From navigating unforeseen obstacles to trying new foods, each foray away from home transforms us.
Travel expands perspectives, unravels preconceived notions, and illuminates the rich tapestry of global cultures. No description or photo can ever match being enveloped by the damp heat of the Borneo jungle or deafened by the volcanic eruption in Tonga I witnessed. Some moments must be lived firsthand – so get out there!

This line from On the Road captures the restless spirit of adventure – to throw caution to the wind and risk it all for the freedom of the open road, come what may. It’s a siren call that tugs at every true wanderer’s soul.
The Gifts of the Journey: Quotes on the Benefits of Travel

While finances impact possibilities, at its core, travel demands the courage to venture beyond the familiar and comfortable. As Coehlo says, daring to explore opens our lives and selves.
“If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion, and avoid the people, you might better stay home.” – James Michener
Michener makes clear that keeping an open mind and embracing cultural differences are prerequisites for meaningful travel that fosters human kinship.
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” – St. Augustinus

The Vacation Sunday Scaries: How to Make the Return From Travel Less Stressful
By Matt Ortile
It is a truth universally acknowledged that the Sunday Scaries hit hardest on the last day of a fabulous trip. Even when I’ve had my fun and I’m objectively ready to come home, I dread my domestic obligations: readjusting routines, returning to work, and answering those blasted emails. Fighting to get back to inbox zero after the weekend is a battle—but after a week away, where I pretended I was beholden to no master but myself? Forget about it.
That said, all good things come to an end, and the recurring challenge of re-entry is a natural part of any traveler’s life. As a millennial raised in the Church of Optimization, I must ask: How can I minimize the stress and anxiety I feel when returning from a trip or a vacation?
“We don’t necessarily need to hack this inevitable part of life,” says Liz Graham , a Brooklyn-based therapist with a background in nervous system science and psychology. We spoke over Zoom about our culture’s incessant need to “hack and heal” anything that feels mildly uncomfortable in our daily lives. Graham suggests befriending that feeling of anxiety, however mild or severe, and parsing its roots. For my part, I recall all the times where I felt anxious about returning from a vacation and, in hindsight, realized it was because my work situation looked down upon employees taking time off. There were instances, too, where I so enjoyed myself on a trip, exploring new passions and interests, that I dreaded coming home because I didn’t yet have access to those personal outlets where I live in New York City .
Then there are just the discomforts of changing gears—but it can help to anticipate those feelings and get resourceful. “If it’s giving yourself a day to transition, book your return flight on a Saturday,” Graham says. “If it’s making some tea and checking your email sometime Sunday evening, set a time limit to do that and stick to it.” Discover and study what works for you, and you can learn to ease your “vacation Sunday Scaries” without taking on the impossible task of eliminating them entirely.
To get an an idea of tactics I could use to manage that post-travel transition back into “real life,” I spoke to a swathe of super travelers—avid vacationers, folks who travel for work, and people who do both—and asked what they do to make coming home feel good.
Bookend your trip with an extra day off at home, to ease the return to your routine.
Prioritize rest toward the end of the trip
Another name for the bummed-out feeling at the end of a vacation could be “the last day lows,” as Katy Nastro, the spokesperson for the travel brand Going , likes to call them. To give herself a boost, she says, “I structure my trip so the final day—or final days—are as relaxing as possible, and I might splurge on a nicer hotel for the very end of the trip to ensure I sleep like a baby before a long flight.” She also treats herself to an upgraded return flight to optimize opportunities for rest: “A better seat with more legroom in economy counts!”
“To maximize sleep on the plane , I eat at the airport or before heading to the airport,” says Andy Dwyer, who works at an embassy in New Delhi and regularly travels through South and Southeast Asia for work and leisure. Flying in business or first class could be a chance to indulge, if time permits. But when Dwyer needs to hit the ground running at the office upon his return, he forgoes the Champagne and three-course meals to prioritize sleep in a lie-flat seat.
Return home a day early, if you can
Give yourself some room to ease back into your home and work life by returning a day or two before you have to go back to your regular routine. Even an afternoon will suffice. “I try to get home midday Sunday whenever possible,” says Millie Tran, the vice president of content strategy and growth at Condé Nast [editor's note: Condé Nast Traveler is part of Condé Nast]. “Those few hours let me relax, have dinner at home, and not feel like I’m just jumping from one thing to the next.”
Additional advantage: Flying home early could even save you money. Nastro says flight prices are typically cheaper on Saturdays because airlines know most tourists will want to fly home on a Sunday, or on the last day of a long holiday weekend.
That said, if you can’t give yourself that buffer time at home, try easing back into your routine a few days before your trip ends. Victoria M. Walker , a travel journalist, and curator of the newsletter Travel With Vikkie , suggests slowly adjusting your sleep schedule to your “home clock,” if you’ve changed time zones, to mitigate jet lag.
Whether it's ordering takeout or leaving a prepped meal in the freezer, having food waiting for you at home is always a good idea.
Prepare a meal plan
It’s daunting to return to an empty kitchen, so develop a game plan for what you’re going to eat when you come home, whether by ordering in or by doing meal prep before your trip. Tran says, “I’ve just resorted to having an order Thai takeout ritual on the way home, so it’s there waiting for me once I’m home. I’ve almost perfected the timing!” Walker is also in the order-in camp and has groceries delivered too, prioritizing fruits and vegetables to combat sluggish post-trip feelings.

On the other hand, Kurt Fulepp, the president of digital at AccuWeather and an avid vacationer, swears by a pre-prepared meal. “The last thing I want to do is eat out again,” he says. “Right now, I’m returning from ten days away and all I’m craving is something basic, like a salad and some chicken or fish.”
Similarly, Jada Yuan , a writer for the Washington Post and formerly the 52 Places Traveler for the New York Times , says, “I find it really stressful to have to order expensive take-out on my first night back home, or even think about grocery shopping.” Instead, before leaving on a trip, Yuan preps something easy to heat up, “whether it’s a meal I froze ahead of time or those lentils in a pouch from Trader Joe’s.”
Resist the urge to procrastinate unpacking.
Unpack your baggage ASAP
It takes a little extra willpower after a long travel day, but it really helps to unpack as soon as you get home. Fulepp says, “No matter what time I get in—whether from a red-eye or if I walk through the door at midnight—I fully unpack my suitcase and ensure it’s stored away.” Dwyer does the same and says that unpacking grounds him back in the domestic space of his home; putting clothes in the laundry basket, for example, helps him better understand the necessary chores for the following week.
Yuan echoes the sentiment, and goes an extra step for planning future travel: “I love throwing the dirty laundry in the hamper, putting everything away,” she says, “but especially refilling my travel-sized toiletries or replacing my travel toothpaste with another mini-tube from my endless stash.” The refilling is a relaxing ritual of sorts that rewards a future self. Yuan keeps travel go-kits, with TSA-approved bottles of everything she needs, ready to be packed into a suitcase at a moment’s notice. “It just makes me feel settled to know I’ll be all set for the next adventure.”
Coming home also means returning to things you love—and making fun plans for your first week back can ease your transition out of vacation mode.
Fill up your calendar with activities whether social or solo
It can be jarring to shift gears from the thrill of travel to the routines of home life—but reengaging with the things you enjoy about being home right when you return can help, says Chris Dong , a freelance travel writer : “I like to arrange some social plans for the week ahead, like dinner with friends. I want to be intentional with who I see and what I do, and make the most of my time at home. That even includes arranging dates in advance!”
This tactic also works as an emotional salve. Dwyer says, “The day before I come home, I text my friends, being like, ‘Hi, I’m back on Tuesday. What’s the rest of your week look like? Let’s get coffee.’ So that the week I’m back isn’t just about catching up on work. It can be about catching up on life and friendships too.”
If you’re not feeling too social, Yuan says, “I find that planning out the TV I want to binge when home can also fill that need. It’s about having that same sense of anticipation I get from planning out my days on a trip.”
Personally, I always change my tune about coming home when I tell myself that I get to play video games on my PlayStation 5 in my living room. Whatever works.
Coming home to a clean house does wonders after a long trip.
Do some housekeeping (or get someone to do it)
This seems so simple, but it bears repeating: Coming home to a clean apartment or house makes a world of difference. All the travelers I spoke to agreed on this point. Tran always makes sure to clean and take out the trash before heading to the airport; Walker clears out her fridge ahead of a long trip; Yuan gives away her perishables to friends and neighbors to avoid food waste.
“I also found a wonderful, affordable house cleaner,” Yuan says. “Lately, I’ve been asking her to come in a few days before I return to make sure the bathroom and kitchen are tidy.” Fulepp also relies on a housekeeper to clean the house, stock the kitchen, and do meal prep before he and his husband come home from a trip, ensuring that their meals for the next few days are ready to simply heat and eat as they ease back into their home routines.
Plan the next trip—and embrace coming home
Universally, the one tip everyone gave me was: “Plan the next trip!” I think the appeal of a vacation—or any kind of travel, really—is the idea that there’s something to look forward to, a forthcoming reprieve from the business (and pleasure) of building a life in one place. Part of travel’s thrill is breaking a pattern, exploring the new or trying on a different routine, perhaps even another version of yourself.
“The framework of ‘vacation life’ versus ‘regular life’ pitted against each other sets us up for a tough return,” Graham says. “Instead, can exciting vacations and predictable routines both be valuable parts of life? Let yourself savor what you had on vacation, complete the experience, and reorient to what's next.”

Travel Quotes That Inspire You to Stay on the Road
Whether you are traveling for work or traveling just to travel, these travel quotes will inspire you to continue traveling. There is so much to see out in the world, that the more you travel, the more of it you will want to see.
“I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read in the train.” ― Oscar Wilde
“I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” ― Robert Louis Stevenson
“The farther you go, however, the harder it is to return. The world has many edges, and it’s easy to fall off.” ― Anderson Cooper
“There is meaning in every journey that is unknown to the traveler.” ― Dietrich Bonhoeffer
“Every dreamer knows that it is entirely possible to be homesick for a place you’ve never been to, perhaps more homesick than for familiar ground.” ― Judith Thurman
Travel Quotes That Inspire Learning
One of the biggest benefits of traveling is the opportunity to learn new things. Whether you are learning about a new city’s history, enjoying new foods, or meeting new people, you are bound to expand your mind during your travels. If you are traveling for work, you will especially gain knowledge towards how a new client is approaching a problem, and you will gather new ideas to take to future sites.
“Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow.” ― Anita Desai
“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta
“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” ― Marcel Proust
“Never did the world make a queen of a girl who hides in houses and dreams without traveling.” ― Roman Payne
“I wonder if the ocean smells different on the other side of the world.” ― J.A. Redmerski
Travel Quotes About the Journey
Traveling for work has its pros and cons – one pro is that you typically do not have to pay for expenses, but a con is that your work is challenging and stressful. However, even if you are traveling for work, it is important to reflect and enjoy the journey. Take the opportunity to gain new perspectives, even if you are in an incredibly small town. You will grow from any new experiences that you can get, listen to these travel quotes and enjoy the journey.
“The road to enlightenment is long and difficult, and you should try not to forget snacks and magazines.” ― Anne Lamott
“To travel is worth any cost or sacrifice.” ― Elizabeth Gilbert
“As you walk and eat and travel, be where you are. Otherwise you will miss most of your life.” ― Siddhārtha Gautama
“Own only what you can always carry with you: know languages, know countries, know people. Let your memory be your travel bag.” ― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
“Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life—and travel—leaves marks on you.” ― Anthony Bourdain
Travel Quotes That Make You Miss Home
While there is much to gain form traveling, these travel quotes capture the feelings we can get when we are away from home for too long. We may miss the people at our home base, or the familiarity of our own bed.
“Maybe you had to leave in order to really miss a place; maybe you had to travel to figure out how beloved your starting point was.” ― Jodi Picoult
“I think you travel to search and you come back home to find yourself there.” ― Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
“No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow. ” ― Lin Yutang
“Every traveler has a home of his own, and he learns to appreciate it the more from his wandering.” ― Charles Dickens
“No matter how far you travel, you can never get away from yourself.” ― Haruki Murakami
These travel quotes are just a sample of the great wisdom out there. When we are traveling, we can get caught up in all of the new sites and people. However, it is a good idea to still maintain a strong home base, as it is comforting to have a place to come back to.
The above travel quotes were collected from Goodreads .

With havin so much content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright violation? My website has a lot of unique content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it looks like a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my authorization. My developer is trying to convince me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the costs.
But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using WordPress on numerous websites for about a year and am anxious about switching to another platform. I have heard great things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can transfer all my wordpress posts into it? Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated!

Whether you’re a slow traveler or jetsetter, there’s nothing like coming home. For some, home is wherever they lay their head at night. But for most of us, home is a place that we can always return to – no matter how far from it we may be. Here are some quotes about home for those who appreciate the comfort and familiarity of being in one place, even as they explore the world.

We all want to come home eventually. But for globe-trotters filled with wanderlust, home is wherever we happen to be at the moment.
Home is a special place, a sanctuary where we can be ourselves without judgement. It’s no wonder that homes are featured prominently in literature and films—they’re symbols of safety, comfort, and love. As global citizens and world travelers, we often have to say goodbye to our homes as we embark on new adventures. But that doesn’t mean that our love for them ever goes away. In fact, traveling around the world only makes us appreciate our homes even more.
Whether you’re on a beach in Thailand or a cafe in Paris, these quotes about home will remind you of why you fell in love with traveling in the first place. Quoting your favorite home sayings can give you a sense of grounding when the world feels like it’s spinning out of control. Even if you’re not currently living in your home country, or if you’re constantly on the go, these phrases can remind you of what matters most.
Hopefully, these home quotes will also make you homesick for your favorite places in the world. So sit back, relax, and enjoy these beautiful words about that special feeling we all get when we finally return “home.”

Lesser-Known Travel Quotes
1. “ Blessed are the curious for they will have adventures. “ – Lovelle Drachman
This is one of the best travel quotes that affirm the notion that those who have the undying enthusiasm to discover new places, things, and even knowledge will always be rewarded with exciting encounters and memories! Don’t you agree?
2. “ A great way to learn about your country is to leave it. “ – Henry Rollins
The first time I read this travel quote, I couldn’t help but laugh because it is SO true! In fact, the first time I flew out of my home country, the Philippines , and landed in the city of Hong Kong , I was just blown away!
Among many other things, I couldn’t help but compare the infrastructure and public transportation (yep, we are far behind!) . I even learned about how others viewed my country as well as us Filipinos, and though it was disconcerting at first, it was — for the most part — refreshing to see how others perceived the place that I grew up in. You bet that the little bubble that I was living in was burst open and it exposed me to a world that challenged what I know while presenting me with new insights that I couldn’t have known had I cooped myself home.
3. “ Travel opens your mind as few other things do. It is its own form of hypnotism, and I am forever under its spell. “ – Libba Bray
I love how poetic this quote is by Libba Bray because I am absolutely under travel’s spell for several years now… and if it IS hypnotism, I don’t ever want to snap out of it! How about you?
4. “ We must travel in the direction of our fear. “ – John Berryman
I gotta admit, I used to fear the thought of traveling to India . Countless stories from friends and families alike kept me from ever setting foot in the country — but I knew that deep within me, amidst the fear that was built up by others’ words, was a deep desire to see the country for myself… and so, I booked a ticket.
Much like what this travel quote says, I traveled in the direction of my fear, and it was an amazing decision! After all, I had the chance to challenge the wrong ideas in my head and when I got over it, the ordeal brought me clarity and made me into a better person as I learned better to never let prejudice rule me.
5. “ Live your life by a compass, not a clock. “ – Stephen Covey
The best travel quotes always have a beautiful message like this one! After all, we were not born to solely work and waste our life away in society’s pre-set motions. We are more than the hours we put in at work and the obligations that we hold. We deserve to enjoy life as it is and to see more of what this world has to offer us!
True enough, in this context, a compass can mean a lot of things; but the way I see it, other than the meaning of giving ourselves the chance to wander off to places anew, it also represents the sense of following a certain direction — a direction to which our heart is leading us to, may that be a breather or a dream that has been put on hold.
6. “ You don’t have to be rich to travel well. “ – Eugene Fodor
We can’t deny the fact that travel costs money BUT it doesn’t have to be costly .
For years now, a lot of travelers and backpackers have already proven how they can have meaningful travels without breaking the bank — take it from me as well who was able to afford to travel the world and tick off all 7 continents without spending a fortune! So don’t ever let money be an excuse not to travel .
7. “ Jobs fill your pocket, but adventures fill your soul. “ – Jamie Lyn Beatty
While we’re still talking about money, YES, we all need money to live, that’s a fact; however, it’s vital that we do not to let it rule us. We must always seek a balance in which we could unwind and go on trips in order to enrich our lives.
It’s just like what this axiom says: adventures DO fill our souls.
8. “ If you think adventures are dangerous, try routine: it’s lethal. “ – Paulo Coelho
Some people find solace in routine, but it helps to remember that you are not a cog in a machine that’s designed to do repetitive actions day in, day out. Of course, I can’t deny that there’s beauty in the mundaneness of everyday life; but if you find yourself seeking comfort in it for the sole reason that you fear something new, then it’s time to put a stop to it and get out of your comfort zone!
9. “I would rather own a little and see the world than own the world and see a little of it.” – Alexander Sattler
Sometimes, we get too caught up with work with the goal of saving up for future adventures — but what actually ends up happening is that you get distracted by the process. You work more, you buy more. You get caught up in it all. So… what happened to your travel dreams?
It’s quite easy to forget why you’re working in the first place, so try not get swept up by shallow things.
10. “ Be brave. Take risks. Nothing can substitute experiences. “ – Paulo Coelho
Can you think of an activity or a trip that you thought was initially risky — and yet it turned out to be the best travel experience that you ever had and you just can’t imagine yourself not taking it?
11. “ People travel because it teaches them things they could learn no other way. “ – Lance Morrow”
This is one of the best travel quotes that is truthful and straight to the point! Apart from obvious added life skills such as learning how to navigate yourself through foreign public transportation, or learning how to speak and converse with the use of foreign languages, travel also exposes you to other people who have stories of their own and other cultures that are totally different than yours.
Case in point, had you stayed home, you would have never seen with your own eyes that some people just don’t live the way you do — and that it’s okay. Or that other communities find something you initially deemed as offensive as something that is normal and accepted — and that’s also okay!
Travel simply broadens the way you understand and perceive the world, and the opportunities for learning are always endless! It is truly a form of education that is beyond any book or classroom.
12. “ To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life. “ – Walter Mitty ( The Secret Life of Walter Mitty )
Have you watched this movie before? It is one of my favorite travel movies and I highly suggest giving it a try to give you a boost of motivation to travel!
13. “ I travel not to cross countries off a list, but to ignite passionate affairs with destinations. “ – Nyssa P. Chopra
While there is nothing wrong with the aim of crossing countries off of your bucketlist, it can prove to be helpful to develop a sense of passion or meaning to why you choose to travel.
14. “ Like all great travelers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen. “ – Benjamin Disraeli
…but, if you have to think of one travel memory that stands out above the rest, what would that be?
15. “ Don’t ask for security, ask for adventure. Better to live 30 years full of adventure than 100 years safe. “ – Jim Rohn
I acknowledge the fact that we all have different priorities in life and there’s nothing wrong if your priority is to be financially secure at an early age. So though this travel phrase might not resonate with you, I hope you can also see the bit of truth in it that as it is with life, it’s a lot better to try and go for adventures while we’re still young and able to. So don’t waste what you have now!
16. “ I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world. “ – Mary Anne Radmacher
FACT : travel changes you and this artistic or aesthetic quote captures this thought perfectly. The changes may be small at times, but traveling never fails to leave its mark as it enables you to soak in a new learning or two.
17. “ Some beautiful paths can’t be discovered without getting lost. “ – Erol Ozan
I’ve gone through this myself far too many times now and it’s always a pleasant surprise to stumble upon unexpected discoveries. Given this probability, I often make it a point to wander around a new destination with no direction in mind!
So tell me, what amazing place have you managed to find by accident?
18. “ Once in a while it really hits people that they don’t have to experience the world in the way they have been told to. “ – Alan Keightley
The world is constantly changing along with people’s mindsets and preferences; so don’t ever box yourself in thinking that there is just one fixed style of travel — or that there is just one way to live.
In fact, years ago, I was told to lead my life as my parents did: get a job, marry, and have kids. Dreams have to take the backseat. It was suffocating but it was the only way I knew; that’s why I’m glad my eyes were opened to a number of other possibilities… and here I am today, experiencing the world the way I NOW know how, and the way that I want it to!
19. “ There is a kind of magicness about going far away and then coming back all changed. “ – Kate Douglas Wiggin
Similar to the meaning behind quote #16, the effect of travel is akin to some sort of enchantment because one’s exposure to a variety of novel occurrences can bring forth valuable insights that can change just about anyone — and for the better at that!
20. “ If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home. “ – James Michener
You can’t fully be immersed in your travels if you close yourself to the world and the reality that’s before you. Yes, it will make you feel uncomfortable — you’re in a new environment after all — but if you take the time to breathe and see what’s in front of you for what it is, you’ll be surprised at how unfounded your fears are. So try to be a bit more open, or else there might not be a point in your travels.
21. “ I’ll look back on this and smile because it was life and I decided to live it. “ – Anonymous
…and yes, you ARE living it!
22. “When you’re traveling, you are what you are, right there and then. People don’t have your past to hold against you. No yesterdays on the road.” – William Least-Heat Moon
The best travel quotes capture the beauty of traveling — as this saying goes, you can be who you want to be because of the simple fact that nobody knows you. Ain’t that swell?
23. “Every traveler has a home of his own, and he learns to appreciate it the more from his wandering.” – Charles Dickens
I tend to think that the grass is always greener on the other side, but travel has taught me that the grass was already green where I was! Oftentimes, we take some things for granted, and for me, I used to think that the Philippines wasn’t a great place to live in — so I left. But after living in Europe for a while, I started to develop a deeper fondness for my home country. Of course, Europe was better in a LOT of things (it’s made up of a lot of first-world countries after all) but I’ve since learned that every place has its own pros and cons. The Philippines clearly had a lot more cons, but I now see its own beauty that I will never exchange for another place.
And above all, it is home.
24. “Our happiest moments as tourists always seem to come when we stumble upon one thing while in pursuit of something else.” – Lawrence Block
I’m sure you all have fun or funny stories related to this! If you have the time, I’d love to hear about it. Please leave a comment at the bottommost part of this post!
25. “This is a big and beautiful world. Most of us live and die in the same corner where we were born and never get to see any of it. I don’t want to be most of us.” – Oberyn Martell ( Game of Thrones )
When I started watching this TV series, I never thought that I would stumble upon one of the most impactful travel quotes there is!
Short Travel Quotes
26. “Work, Save, Travel, Repeat” – Anonymous
This is one of the best short travel quotes you’ve probably already heard of, but it’s a classic because it’s the kind of cycle that we just simply do in order to achieve our dreams of visiting different destinations all over the world. Some of you will grind the 9-to-5, while others choose to do remote work — and I do travel writing while being an online entrepreneur.
But whatever your profession may be, just know through this catchphrase that travel is never impossible.
27. “If not now, when?” – Primo Levi
Don’t put off your travel plans any longer! If you’re going to wait for that perfect set-up, you might wake up one day realizing that you’ve missed so many opportunities to just do it . Worse, you might already be too old to do, for instance, that hiking trail that you’ve always wanted to conquer. So hear me out: do it ASAP.
If you ever need some ideas on which destinations to go to and how to plan, don’t fret because I got you covered with my itinerary guides . So that’s definitely one thing you won’t have to worry about!
28. “Life is short and the world is wide.” – Simon Raven
A longer version of this quote goes like this: “Life is short and the world is wide, the sooner you start exploring it, the better.”
This is actually one of the best travel quotes that I have first encountered after I took the leap of faith to quit my job and travel the world . It’s simple but it holds so much truth. Besides, the sooner that you can try and jumpstart your journey, the better it will be!
29. “Oh, the places you’ll go!” – Dr. Seuss
With childlike wonder, positivity, and anticipation, I hope this quote inspires you to picture all of the new places that you’ll soon be setting foot in!
30. “Not all those who wander are lost.” – J.R.R. Tolkien
I may be a LOTR fan… but with no bias at all, I can honestly say that this is one of the best adventure quotes out there. Sure, it may be overused by now, but it’s like that for a reason: it’s relevant and it just holds so much truth.
After all, most people tend to think that those who travel are out there in order to ‘find themselves ‘ — which, of course, could also be the case — but there are also those people who journey through the world because they feel more like themselves than ever before.
31. “ Don’t call it a dream, call it a plan. “ – Anonymous
This isn’t just one of the best travel quotes but also basically one of the best life quotes out there.
So whatever your reason is for putting off what you’ve always dreamed of — be it time constraints, lack of travel resources , or motivation — just remember that NOW is the perfect time to start making your dream your new reality. In fact, it shouldn’t simply be a dream, but a plan where you set certain actionable steps in order to attain whatever it is that you want to achieve.
32. “ Life is a journey, not a destination. “ – Ralph Waldo Emerson
This is the kind of adventure quote that is used for just about anything: may it be for self-help, mindfulness, or for travel.
Life is indeed a journey. It’s about living in the moment — in every little moment. Because the truth of the matter is, the destination is not nearly as important as to how we get ‘there’ or how we spend the whole of it. So take joy in any present experience, no matter if they are a mix of highs and lows. Don’t waste the present for an uncertain future!
33. “ Collect moments, not things. “ – Karen Salmansohn
The best travel quotes remind us how fulfilling and lasting joy can never be derived from things. Just think about it: you might have felt extreme joy when you got your first iPhone — BUT, that doesn’t have much of an impact compared to when you finally fulfilled that dream vacation.
You can easily lose interest in a new gadget, but you will forever cherish a fond memory. So imagine collecting a lot more of those glorious memories… won’t that be more amazing than a number of objects that can easily disappear or deteriorate?
34. “ Paris is always a good idea. “ – Sabrina (1995), Julia Ormond
A lot of people seem to have wrongfully attributed this travel quote to Audrey Hepburn’s character, Sabrina (1954 film). However, she NEVER said this line; instead, it was Julia Ormond’s Sabrina character in the 1995 movie version who said it.
Fascinating, right? Since Audrey is a more well-known actress, it makes sense that her name was used… but anyway, I hope this helps clear things up once and for all. That fun trivia aside, this is still one of the best travel quotes out there. Even if some people would argue that Paris is overrated, it’s still and always will be a good idea. Another quote you might love as well is when Humphrey Bogart uttered:
“We’ll always have Paris.”
35. “ The journey not the arrival matters. “ – T.S. Eliot
This simple quote may or may not resonate with you; but sometimes, there are in-between experiences that are often more worthy to be ‘savored’. This is actually similar to quote #32 wherein both of the quotes basically deliver the message that getting there is half the fun!
36. “ To travel is to live. “ – Hans Christian Andersen
This is one of the best travel quotes that is simple yet profound. It is actually an excerpt from Hans’ autobiography wherein the whole of it goes like this…
“To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, To gain all while you give, To roam the roads of lands remote, To travel is to live.”
37. “ Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all. “ – Helen Keller
…and the rest of this goes…
“ Security does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than exposure.” ( TRIVIA : The ‘at all’ part above wasn’t originally written in).
By the way, Helen’s quote is actually one of the top best travel quotes that I lived by in the past years. After all, we only have one short precious life… so why not just make the most of it?
38. “ Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire. “ – Jennifer Lee
We are all searching for something that stirs up a passionate spirit within us, and if you’re lucky enough to find what that is, you must definitely do everything in your power to go for it! In my case, it was traveling… it always has been. I pursued it with such fervor and my life has truly been a bliss since then! As such, I hope that you’ll find yours too.
39. “ Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer. “ – Anonymous
As someone who is also passionate about financial management, I would have to cheekily point out that travel does NOT technically grant you more money, compared to buying things like investments, etc. I mean, that’s just basic common sense.
However, we also know that traveling gives us a lot of invaluable things that would actually help make us richer in terms of knowledge, friends, skills, and so much more!
40. “ Dare to live the life you’ve always wanted . “ – Ralph Waldo Emerson
This is an example of the best travel quotes that have been changed or paraphrased over time. Ralph’s actual quote for this was:
“ Dare to live the life you have dreamed for yourself. Go forward and make your dreams come true.”
I hope this serves as a reminder that it’s about time you step out of your comfort zone and finally take that leap of faith. For instance, does traveling solo in Europe scare you even if it’s something you’ve been dying to do? If it is, try and challenge that fear. Look at how others have been able to do it — so you’ll surely be able to do it too! There’s no better time to dare yourself than NOW.
41. “In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take.” – Lewis Carroll
This is similar to another life quote that I love so dearly:
“ Making a big life change is pretty scary. But, know what’s even scarier? Regret . “
There have been so many people, mostly seniors, in my travels who have shared their sentiments that mostly revolve around this idea. Those conversations struck me deeply and I hope it will help you realize — just as much as I did — to take more chances rather than end up regretting not doing anything at all.
42. “ I’m in love with cities I’ve never been to and people I’ve never met. “ – Melody Truong
Did you know? This is one of the best travel quotes that has been written by someone so young! Melody was only 13 when she wrote this on her Tumblr page, and since then it blew up — plus, it was even WRONGLY attributed to the author of the book, ‘ The Fault in our Stars ‘. Anyhow, I’m sure you have felt the same sentiments that Melody stated in this travel quote. It’s quite a melancholic feeling, but it’s the kind of longing that can easily be remedied with a purchase of a plane ticket ! * wink *
43. “ I love the feeling of being anonymous in a city I’ve never been before. “ – Bill Bryson
Don’t you just love this? If you ask me, traveling is the closest thing to living multiple lives because every trip that I take, it gives me the chance to transform myself into someone else. Or maybe I could even start over from a clean slate where I can truly be me — to show a face that I have never shown to anyone before. It’s absolutely fun, like that first day in school where you’re afraid yet also excited about the idea of meeting new people, new encounters, and so much more!
The brand new unfamiliarity of just about everything is the topmost allure to traveling, don’t you think so too?
44. “ I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list. “ – Susan Sontag
This is what most travelers feel, and even if it’s close to impossible to see just about every single place in the world, our list will keep on growing. And we will do everything in our power to try and see as much as we could! Personally, I’m in no rush to see it all but it would surely be amazing to be able to do so.
45. “ Adventure may hurt you but monotony will kill you. “ – Anonymous
Naturally, there are risks involved when you go on any adventure; but more often than not, the rewards far outweigh the risks. Sometimes, those risks would either cease to exist or turn into wonderful experiences instead! (That being said, don’t ever forget to buy travel insurance !)
Now, of course, I acknowledge the fact that people are often content with the normal course: get a job, get married, have kids, and retire. But if you feel that there is more that you want out of life, get out of that rut and do more of what you want to do! Similar to this, I also love the following quote by Maya Mendoza…
“No amount of security is worth the suffering of a mediocre life chained to a routine that has killed your dreams.”
46. “ Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time. “ – Aliyyah Eniath
This is one of the best travel quotes that has an underlying message of ecological conservation . As travelers, we must always find ways to minimize our impact on nature. We only have one Earth, so we should do our part in ensuring that we continue to preserve this world’s flora and fauna. If I may leave a tip, always try to carry a bag with you where you can stash any waste you produce or see in any place that you travel to — may it be to the beach or to the mountains.
47. “I don’t know where I’m going, but I’m on my way.” – Carl Sandburg
At times, especially when you’re on a long term travel spree — or even with life, in general — there will be moments where you just don’t know what you’re doing or what you’re even trying to get to. But so long as you’re working towards something, know that you’re still heading in the right direction.
48. “ There’s no time to be bored in a world as beautiful as this. “ – Matt Hogan
I hope this serves as a helpful reminder if you ever catch yourself thinking that you’re bored. In fact, ‘travel’ can be as simple as a trip to a nearby lake or a hiking trail — the world is basically your playground, so remember that there is much for you to see and do!
49. “ Live life with no excuses, travel with no regret. “ – Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde led an extraordinary life and if you want to gain more context behind this famous travel quote of his, you should try reading his biography book that’s written by Richard Ellmann. Anyhow, I definitely believe that living life with no excuses and traveling to your heart’s content is a wonderful mantra!
50. “ When was the last time you did something for the first time? “ – John C. Maxwell
The best travel quotes serve as great prompts for all of us to continue learning, exploring, and experiencing new adventures! It will not only help us lead a fun and fulfilling life, but also in getting of a rut when things seem to slip into monotony.
51. “ Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before. “ – Instructions for Life (1999)
Here’s an interesting fact for you: you might have seen this quote being attributed to the Dalai Lama, but he actually NEVER said this! Nevertheless, this remains to be wise words that I hope you get to follow because it’s truly a great goal to travel to a new place at least once a year.
52. “ The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams. “ – Oprah Winfrey
This quote isn’t exactly for travel, but it sure works as one of the best travel quotes that will help pump you up in reaching for your dreams — whatever that may be! If you ask me, it actually still feels surreal that I’m now living my dreams… because 10 years ago, if you told me that this would be my new lifelong lifestyle, I would have NEVER believed you! And in the words of Oprah, it has been one big adventure full of ups and downs; however, it’s the kind of ordeal that I won’t ever give up nor turn away from.
53. “ Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world. “ – Gustav Flaubert
Traveling is definitely a humbling experience that opens you up to new perspectives especially about your existence. Sure, it could make you feel insignificant and small like a drop of water in the ocean, but I rather see it as a positive thing because it helps you focus on what really matters. It shreds away any frivolities and superficial things that you’ve previously deemed as important in life.
There have been numerous encounters where I have gone through this feeling such as when I felt the scale of the world and its environmental issues when I traveled down to Antarctica , or how little my problems were when I witnessed India ‘s slums.
54. “ Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller. “ – Ibn Battuta
Every adventure grants you a ‘book’ of stories and memories; in fact, this is one of the best travel quotes that describes why I set up a travel blog in the first place! It has always been my wish to impart inspiration and tips through my own travel experiences, so this online space has been perfect for my needs.
Though… if I may so myself, don’t you think that sometimes, words aren’t just enough to describe what you’ve been through? I guess this is why we also tell our stories so that others could take their own adventures and go through what we’ve been through ourselves — by then, they will fully understand what we meant.
55. “ We travel, some of us forever, to seek other places, other lives, other souls. “ – Anais Nin
This is one of the best travel quotes that would describe the future me because I’m 100% sure that I will be traveling forever — or of course, for as long as I’m alive. Do you think you’ll be the same?
56. “ A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles. “ – Tim Cahill
I totally agree with this one! I’ve met a lot of amazing friends from all over the world and I’m sure you know the saying that sometimes it’s your companions that help shape a travel trip — and you bet that the times I’ve spent with people have made my travels even more fun and fulfilling.
57. “ Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. “ – Neale Donald Walsch
Years ago, if I didn’t venture beyond my comfort zone, I would have still been depressed, working a 9-to-5 job that I didn’t love as I lived from paycheck to paycheck. That wasn’t my definition of ‘living’ nor will it ever be my passion nor my cup of tea — so I took the leap. And boy, I have never looked back since then! It wasn’t easy, that’s for sure, but the end result was worth my prior struggles.
58. “ Of all the books in all the world, the best stories are found between the pages of a passport. “ – Saber Ben Hassen
One could argue the semantics of calling a passport a ‘ book ‘, but in its essence, it certainly serves as one. This is for the reason that every stamp, every tear, and every crease holds a multitude of amazing memories and encounters!
59. “ Actually, the best gift you could have given her was a lifetime of adventures. “ – Anonymous
There are a ton of ideas out there on gifts for travelers and naturally, granting someone a gift where they can go travel is the best of all!
P.S. The quote above is wrongfully attributed to Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. A lot of merchandisers have used his name to sell the quote and I understand it’s lovely, but up till now I can’t find the right author of the quote — but it’s definitely NOT from Lewis Carroll.
60. “ To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world .” – Freya Stark
Remember those first mornings you’ve had in foreign places? You’ll first wake up feeling disconcerted and then… it dawns on you that you’re in a new destination. Next is the excitement and thrill as you realize the number of fresh experiences you’ll soon encounter. Aaaah… I can’t wait to wake up in a new country soon!
61. “ To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries. “ – Aldous Huxley
We all have preconceived notions about countries, cultures, and people in general. We hear them from the media and even from our own friends, but this is one of the best travel quotes that reiterates the idea of how you have to see things for yourself before forming strong opinions about anything.
62. “ Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore. “ – Andre Gide
This is literally a perfect ‘mantra’ for travelers; but altogether, it’s a great message for how we should lead our lives. Plus, much like the rest of these adventure quotes, this one tells us the obvious truth that we can’t grow nor accomplish anything until we let ourselves do things that we have never done before.
63. “ The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page. “ – Saint Augustine
Don’t delay your travel plans any further, it’s time to fuel your wanderlust and see the places you’ve long wanted to see! Just like what this famous travel quote says, if you don’t go anywhere, you’ll definitely have a limited view of the world.
64. “ Better to see something once than hear about it a thousand times. “ – An Asian Proverb
Similar to quote #61 above, it’s preferable that we witness something with our own two eyes than to base it off on other people’s opinions or observations. Even if let’s say, they dissuade you to visit it because it’s dangerous or too touristy, I urge you to find out for yourself.
65. “ We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us. “ – Robyn Yong
A lot of us see travel as an escape from our daily life, but this is one of the best travel quotes that puts a nice spin to it because, in actuality, our mundane daily life is where life escapes us. Travel is one of the greatest solutions that helps revitalize our spirits and brings back our zest for life. Don’t you agree?
66. “ We wander for distraction but we travel for fulfillment. “ – Hilaire Belloc
Similar to the previous quote, we’re usually lost at first when we wander since we want to distract ourselves from anything that we want to escape from. But as you go through the motions, you’ll start to know yourself better and what your limits are… and in one of those moments, you’ll slowly start to feel that travel truly is for your fulfilment.
67. “ Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow. “ – Anita Desai
The same way that friends can shape up who we are, the places we’ve seen and the encounters we’ve been through will forever make an impact on us. It can manifest into different things, may it be a change or an improvement in your mannerisms, favorites, values, and so on. In fact, a new language or a new friend can easily “become a part of you” and that’s a wonderful thing!
68. “ Travel doesn’t become adventure until you leave yourself behind. “ – Marty Rubin
I have some qualms with this particular quote but I can see that it has a meaningful message. If there is one thing that I think we should leave behind within ourselves when we travel, that would be prejudices; but then again, as we venture out into the world, it is naturally broken down. Don’t you agree? Other than prejudices, preconceived notions of fear is also an ideal thing to get rid of in order to truly come face to face with adventures of all kinds!
69. “ A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving. “ – Lao Tzu
I believe that what Lao Tzu wanted to say about this quote is that we should basically live in the present moment — a focus on the ‘now’ is always a lot better than a focus on the outcome because doing so will help us be more open to a range of sudden opportunities and possibilities. Besides, more often than not, the best travel experiences come from unplanned situations!
70. “ Travel. As much as you can. As far as you can. As long as you can. Life’s not meant to be lived in one place. “ – Anonymous
Sure enough, there is an ENORMOUS world out there with various people to meet, cultures to see, food to try, and sights to enjoy. Staying in just one place may work for you, but just think of how much you’re missing out on some of the things that this world has to offer — so why not take advantage of it while you’re still here?
71. “ We travel for romance, we travel for architecture, and we travel to be lost. “ – Ray Bradbury
Travel always finds a way to unlock a myriad of emotions, desires and circumstances. Tell me, for what reason do you travel?
72. “ If we were meant to stay in one place, we’d have roots instead of feet. “ – Rachel Wolchin
I love the clever way this quote was written, and indeed, we’re not plants meant to sit in just one spot and grow — we got feet for moving. And it’s not just for walking from home to work or elsewhere, but it’s for us to explore… and to just basically feel, that yes, we are here and we are alive.
73. “ Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. “ – Ralph Waldo Emerson
While I don’t advise following this quote when you’re going on a hike (lol, unless okay, you know the terrain like the back of your hand) , this quote is amazing — literal meanings aside. After all, there is joy in carving out your own path away from what’s normal and what’s overdone. If you take it a step further and apply it to life in general, you can partake on a journey that no one has ever done before, and you’re sure to leave a mark that will pave the way for others to follow suit.
74. “ I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move. “ – Robert Louis Stevenson
We all have our reasons for traveling, and you might not wholly agree with what Robert says here, but… I believe we can all agree on his last sentence: the great affair is to move — and to go beyond than just getting from point A to point B.
75. “ Wanderlust consumed her; foreign hearts and exotic minds compelled her. She had a gypsy soul and a vibrant hope for the unknown. “ – D. Marie
In case you don’t know it yet, wanderlust is defined as the strong longing or impulse for wandering/traveling. That being said, this is definitely one of those inspirational quotes that a lot of female travelers use. Though some may find a negative connotation to the word ‘gypsy’, a gypsy soul is said to refer to a person who loves movement and freedom.
Long Travel Quotes
76. “We are torn between a nostalgia for the familiar and an urge for the foreign and strange. As often as not, we are homesick most for the places we have never known . “ – Carson McCullers
Similar to quote #42 above, this is one of the best travel quotes that depicts our longing for places beyond!
77. “I have found out that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.” – Mark Twain
A lot of people say that travel is the best way to test a relationship — not only for partners but also for friends, and I totally agree with them! Do you? If you do, can you share a particular story that encapsulates the thought in this travel quote?
For me, apart from testing the waters with my past boyfriends, I fondly remember going on a trip with this girl that I met during my travels. One of my blogging projects permitted me to bring a +1 along and I immediately thought of her who was also in the area. Besides, she was really cool and I even enjoyed her company, so I was all, “ why not? ” Well.. to my surprise, I discovered that she was a total diva and she was also the most condescending person that I’ve ever met who was super disrespectful to servers and waiters alike. It made me really glad that I saw that side of her sooner rather than later!
78. “ The more I traveled the more I realized that fear makes strangers of people who should be friends. “ – Shirley MacLaine
Don’t you agree with this? Because I do. We all ‘fear’ the unknown — or whatever it is that is different from us or from what we’re used to. But I think that if we just take the time to be open and understanding, we can quickly realize that we are all just one and the same.
79. “ When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money. “ – Susan Heller
Preparing your luggage for a trip can be such an arduous task and this quote cleverly sums up what needs to be done — but if you ever need a ‘helping hand’, you should check out my packing guides !
80. “ I travel because it makes me realize how much I haven’t seen, how much I’m not going to see, and how much I still need to see. “ – Carew Papritz
If someone asks me why I travel, this is one of the best travel quotes that answers one of my top reasons why! How about you?
81. “ Every dreamer knows that it is entirely possible to be homesick for a place you’ve never been to, perhaps more homesick than for familiar ground. “ – Judith Thurman
If you look back to quote #76 above, you will see how the message of this saying by Judith is very similar.
82. “ Now more than ever do I realize that I will never be content with a sedentary life, that I will always be haunted by thoughts of a sun-drenched elsewhere. “ – Isabelle Eberhardt
This holds so much truth for me because honestly, I never had the urge nor dream to travel when I was young. I was absolutely content with the little island that I grew up in —but the more that I was exposed to the world (and even more so after my first trip abroad) , I was hit with the realization that I DO yearn for more!
83. “ We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open. “ – Jawaharial Nehru
To desire for adventures is one thing, but to be wholly appreciative and understanding of what you see in your travels is another matter that you must forever remember to hold.
84. “ And then there is the most dangerous risk of all — the risk of spending your life not doing what you want on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later. “ – Randy Komisar
Related to adage #15 in this list, I am in love with the message that this quote is saying… but of course, I also recognize the idealistic message behind it because not everyone has the privilege to get up and take the leap to follow their dreams. But I hope that my story can help inspire you to see it is still possible because even someone like me who was broke and coming from dire circumstances was still able to risk it all and land to where I am today. So whenever it’s possible, no matter how small the steps may be, try and follow your passions or dreams.
85. “ The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience. “ – Eleanor Roosevelt
Life is what you make it and with this one precious life you have, I hope you’re making the most of it!
86. “T o my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted. “ – Bill Bryson
The best travel quotes like this one often reminds us how the novelty of traveling is truly a feeling that anyone could get addicted to. In fact, even the smallest things can already seem so fascinating that they will just bring a smile to your face!
87. “ But the most beautiful things in life are just not things. They’re people and places, memories and pictures. They’re feeling and moments and smiles and laughter. “ – Anonymous
This is one of the best travel quotes (much like #33) that you’ve probably already heard of numerous times now — and it’s for the simple fact that it holds true!
88. “ Travel is like love, mostly because it’s a heightened state of awareness, in which we are mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity and ready to be transformed. That is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end. “ – Pico Iyer
This is a great comparison because every trip that we take is akin to wearing rose-tinted glasses leading us to see everything in a fresh and wonderful light. Now, those glasses may or may not remain even after the trip ends, but much like what the last beautiful sentence says above: it’s a feeling, like a love affair, that will never really end!
89. “ You get a strange feeling when you’re about to leave a place. You’ll not only miss the people you love but you’ll miss the person you are now at this time and this place, because you’ll never be this way ever again. “ – Azar Nafisi
There have been various instances as well as people that I wish I didn’t have to say goodbye to, but there IS one person that I don’t regret saying adieu — and that’s an older version of me. Besides, there has never been a travel experience that I didn’t come out as a better person, if not an improved ‘me’, and that is surely one of the beautiful things about it!
90. “ Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime . “ – Mark Twain
You’ve probably also heard of this awesome travel quote time and time again, but this is the sort of saying that will remain immortal because it simply holds true.
91. “ We travel because we need to, because distance and difference are the secret tonics of creativity. When we get home, home is still the same. But something in our mind has been changed, and that changes everything. “ – Anonymous
Travel does not only affect creativity but a lot of other aspects in our minds as well: prejudice, bigotry, perception, preference, and so many others (just like what the #90 expression above says). And it’s surely this kind of change that I urge everyone to experience!
92. “ You will never be completely at home again, because part of your heart always will be elsewhere. That is the price you pay for the richness of loving and knowing people in more than one place. “ – Miriam Adeney
This is yet another one of the best travel quotes that I love! So far, I have tried living in other places around the globe and the more I explore, the more I realize that home is everywhere yet also nowhere. At times it’s not even just about the people, because home for me could be a feeling, a familiar tune, or even a fond memory. It is always changing and it might be a price I have to pay, but I will never give it up for anything in the world.
93. “ Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind. “ – Anthony Bourdain
Anthony was a legend and his words will forever remain with us in this world. He traveled far and wide and he perfectly described the truth about travel. I especially love the phrase that goes: “ the journey changes you; it SHOULD change you.” Meanwhile, another passage by Anthony that I love is as follows…
If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them – wherever you go.
94. “ Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. “ – T erry Pratchett
This is exactly how I felt when I finally revisited my hometown in the Philippines, Batanes , after 10 long years! I can’t stress enough how mind-blowing it was to see how much things have changed, or how vibrant the seas and mountains actually were.
Simply put: I understood that I took things for granted and I surely saw my hometown with ‘new eyes and extra colors’ —and yes, it was amazing! But at the very core, even though there were some changes here and there, I realized that the one who changed the most… was me.
95. “ Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends. “ – Maya Angelou
This is another one of the best travel quotes (similar to the maxim in #78) that I love because it resonates with one of the important learnings that I’ve gained while traveling: to try and have a deeper appreciation and understanding of everyone and everything in this world.
The way I see it, the more people I meet, the more accepting I become of other people’s, customs, beliefs, etc. Now, of course, it doesn’t mean that I have to concede nor condone what they do if I feel that it’s something I don’t agree with in the first place; but rather, it simply gives me the chance to understand better. And I believe that such a simple act can already help open doors or build bridges, bit by bit… Don’t you agree?
96. “ The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. “ – Chris McCandles ( Into the Wild )
Have you seen this movie before? I’m not gonna spoil it for you but it does have a lot of best travel quotes like this one. We each have our own ideals on how to lead a fulfilling life. It will always vary, but I believe that one constant truth about it is that we find enjoyment in discovering new things that exposes us to what this world has to offer.
97. “ There’s an opposite to déjà vu. They call it jamais vu . It’s when you meet the same people or visit places, again and again, but each time is the first. Everybody is always a stranger. Nothing is ever familiar. “ – Chuck Palahniuk
This travel quote may or may not hold true for you, but I believe that we can all agree that there just are certain places, people and things that have this certain effect… No matter the number of times, some of them still feel like a brand new ‘meeting’. If you ask me, Japan is my top-of-mind country for this because even if I’ve been there for countless times, I still can’t get enough of it. Everything still feels new like a breath of fresh air!
98. “ Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comforts of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things. Air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky. All things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it. “ – Cesare Pavese
It’s this kind of premise that scares a lot of new travelers, but hear me out: sure, travel can be brutal but NOT all the time. The start could be difficult but these kinds of experiences will help you realize how adaptable, independent and strong you can actually be. It could even be freeing, and the more you expose yourself to these kinds of things, the better you become.
99. “ But that’s the glory of foreign travel, as far as I am concerned. I don’t want to know what people are talking about. I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can’t read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can’t even reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses. “ – Bill Bryson
I love the phrase used by Bill here: ‘ childlike wonder ‘ because it truly encapsulates the emotion that I feel when I first step in a foreign country. With everything that’s new to me, it just makes me feel as if I’ve stepped into a whole new world — and that’s a feeling that I will never get enough of.
100. “ One fine day, it will be your turn. You will leave homes, cities and countries to pursue grander ambitions. You will leave friends, lovers and possibilities for the chance to roam the world and make deeper connections. You will defy your fear of change, hold your head high and do what you once thought was unthinkable: walk away. And it will be scary. At first. But what I hope you’ll find in the end is that in leaving, you don’t just find love, adventure or freedom. More than anything, you find you. “ – Isa Garcia
Not a lot of travel blogs have this on their list so YES, this is one of the lesser-known travel quotes and I’m so glad that I discovered it back in my Tumblr blogging years. Truth be told, this is one of those sayings that helped inspire me at the start of my journey to take a leap and I’m absolutely happy to say that that “ one fine day” for me has already happened. My turn was up and it has been amazing since then!
How about you, when is your turn gonna be?

April 11, 2024 - Israel-Hamas war
By Heather Chen , Antoinette Radford, Tori B. Powell , Aditi Sangal and Elise Hammond , CNN
Our live coverage of Israel's war on Hamas in Gaza has moved here .
UN committee fails to reach consensus on full Palestinian membership, Security Council president says
From CNN’s Richard Roth and Michael Rios
A specialized UN committee failed to reach a consensus Thursday on Palestinian membership in the United Nations, according to the president of the UN Security Council.
Two-thirds of the committee members were in favor of moving on with membership, with many countries arguing that “Palestine fulfills all the criteria that are required” to be granted full state member status, Malta's Ambassador and Security Council President Vanessa Frazier said.
She added that no one explicitly objected to the membership qualifications.
Frazier also said she would circulate a draft report on the deliberations as soon as Friday. If the committee doesn’t agree on the report, it could hold another meeting to iron out any differences.
Asked whether the process of deliberating Palestinian membership in the committee is now over, Frazier said, “Unless the next step of agreeing (to) the report of the committee warrants another meeting to iron out the differences, it’s not foreseen that there would be any further committee action.”
But she noted that any UN Security Council member can still table a resolution to vote on Palestinian membership at any time, regardless of the committee's report.
The US and Middle East brace for a possible Iran attack that could escalate the conflict. Here's the latest
From CNN staff
Concerns about a possible Iranian attack against Israel has prompted many diplomatic conversations around the globe.
Here are some developments on diplomacy around the threat of an attack:
- Iran's statement: The imperative for Tehran to "punish" Israel for the deadly strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week might have been avoided if the attack had been condemned at the United Nations, Iran’s Mission to the UN said Thursday.
- US and UK diplomacy: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with the foreign ministers of Turkey, China and Saudi Arabia on Wednesday night and Thursday morning to tell them that countries should be urging Iran not to escalate the conflict in the Middle East after threats made by Tehran against Israel, according to a State Department spokesperson. The top US general for the Middle East is also in Israel . Additionally, Britain's foreign secretary warned his Iranian counterpart on Thursday that Tehran “must not draw” the Middle East into a wider conflict .
- Israel receives US support: Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant spoke with Blinken and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. The US officials expressed the country's support for Israel against Iranian threats. Gallant warned that such an attack could lead to a regional escalation.
- Travel restrictions: The US State Department restricted the travel of US government personnel in Israel in the wake of public threats against Israel by Iran. “The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events,” the alert noted. US officials are on high alert for a potential retaliatory strike by Iran or its proxies against Israel.
Meanwhile, here's some other updates:
- Hamas on hostages: A member of Hamas' political bureau said a prisoner-hostage exchange is being discussed as part of larger ceasefire negotiations. "Part of negotiations is to reach a ceasefire agreement to have enough time and safety to collect final and more precise data" on the hostages held in Gaza, Basem Naim said in a statement on Thursday. "Because they (hostages) are in different palaces, (being held) by different groups, some of them are under the rubble killed with our own people, and we negotiate to get heavy equipment for this purpose."
- Updates on aid to Gaza: It is clear that Israel is working to ramp up humanitarian aid to Gaza, but it has not yet implemented all of the measures it has announced, a top United Nations humanitarian official said. Aid coming in trucks from Israel has to be "segregated from water, from food, from medical items" before it goes into Gaza, said Jamie McGoldrick, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator in Jerusalem. “Getting 400 trucks from Kerem Shalom doesn't mean 400 trucks go into Gaza,” he said, adding that the logistical complications are numerous, and take time to resolve. He also said Israel’s restrictions on movement inside the strip complicate matters.
Anera charity resumes work in Gaza after pausing when Israeli strike killed 7 World Central Kitchen staff
From CNN's Tala Alrajjal and Mohammed Tawfeeq
American Near East Refugee Aid (Anera) has resumed Gaza operations "after a temporary pause" following an airstrike that killed seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) aid workers on April 1.
"As you know, the decision to temporarily pause our operations was not an easy one. We followed the direction of our staff in Gaza, who've faced death, loss, and destruction since the start of the war," Sean Carroll, the president and CEO of Anera, said in a statement on Thursday. "After the killing of Anera staff member Mousa Shawwa , followed by the attack that killed seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen, we made the difficult but necessary decision to pause aid operations on April 2," Carroll added in the statement.
Carroll said Israeli authorities informed him during a meeting Thursday that "certain measures would be taken to protect humanitarian aid workers in Gaza – including Anera's staff."
"With the full support of our Gaza team, we have determined that the circumstances have changed sufficiently to resume our vital humanitarian work in Gaza," Carroll said.
Anera on Thursday resumed "full operations in Gaza to deliver meals, food parcels, hygiene kits, tents, medical treatments, and more to families in dire need," according to the statement.
Iran says its imperative to punish Israel could have been avoided had UN Security Council condemned attack
From CNN’s Natalie Barr and Adam Pourahmadi
The imperative for Tehran to "punish" Israel for the deadly strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week might have been avoided if the attack had been condemned at the United Nations, Iran’s Mission to the UN said Thursday.
“Had the UN Security Council condemned the Zionist regime’s reprehensible act of aggression on our diplomatic premises in Damascus and subsequently brought to justice its perpetrators, the imperative for Iran to punish this rogue regime might have been obviated," the mission said on X.
The UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack on April 1, according to a statement from the UN spokesperson Stephan Dujarric. A Security Council discussion was held on April 2 to discuss the attack, but differences among members prevented any formal action or condemnation from taking place.
The United States is on high alert and actively preparing for a “significant” attack by Iran targeting Israeli or American assets in the region in response to the strike in Damascus that killed top Iranian commanders.
UK foreign secretary warns Iran not to draw Middle East into wider conflict
From CNN's Natalie Barr
Britain's foreign secretary warned his Iranian counterpart on Thursday that Tehran “must not draw” the Middle East into a wider conflict following a series of escalating threats made by Iran toward Israel.
British Foreign Secretary David Cameron told Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian that the United Kingdom was "deeply concerned about the potential for miscalculation leading to further violence. Iran should instead work to de-escalate and prevent further attacks," according to a post on X .
Iran's state-aligned Tasnim news agency on Thursday reported that Amir-Abdollahian had told Cameron that the silence from the UK and the United States following Israel’s attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week only served to encourage Israel to continue waging war in Gaza and expand its conflict in the region.
US and Israeli defense leaders discuss fears of Iranian attack
From CNN’s Michael Conte in Washington, DC, Tamar Michaelis in Jerusalem and Larry Register in Atlanta
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant today to “reaffirm the US ironclad commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies,” according to a Pentagon spokesperson.
The call comes a day after Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Israel " must be punished and it will be" following a strike on an Iranian embassy compound in Syria that killed seven Iranian officials.
Israel “will not tolerate an Iranian attack on its territory,” the statement read, adding that the two defense leaders also discussed detailed preparations “for an Iranian attack against the State of Israel.”
Gallant said an Iranian attack on Israel could lead to a regional escalation.
It is the second discussion held between Gallant and Austin over the past week, according to the statement. Gallant expressed his appreciation for Austin’s personal commitment to the security of the State of Israel and for the deepening cooperation between the defense establishments of both countries, as well as between the Israel Defense Forces and US CENTCOM.
State Department restricts personnel travel in Israel amid concerns over Iranian threats
From CNN's Jennifer Hansler
The US State Department has restricted the travel of US government personnel in Israel in the wake of public threats against Israel by Iran.
“Out of an abundance of caution, U.S. government employees and their family members are restricted from personal travel outside the greater Tel Aviv (including Herzliya, Netanya, and Even Yehuda), Jerusalem, and Be’er Sheva areas until further notice,” a security alert posted by the US Embassy Thursday said. “U.S. government personnel are authorized to transit between these three areas for personal travel.” “The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events,” the alert noted.
State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said he would not “speak to the specific assessments that led to us to restrict our employees and family members’ personal travel, but clearly we are monitoring the threat environment in the Middle East and specifically in Israel.”
“We have seen Iran making public threats against Israel in the past few days,” Miller said. “Israel is in a very tough neighborhood and we have been monitoring the security situation. You saw us slightly adjust for travel warnings at the beginning of this conflict and we conduct ongoing assessments all the time about the situation on the ground.”
US officials are on high alert for a potential retaliatory strike by Iran or its proxies against Israel.
Hamas says ceasefire with Israel is essential to collect data on hostages held in Gaza by different groups
From CNN's Abeer Salman and Mohammed Tawfeeq
A member of Hamas' political bureau said a prisoner-hostage exchange is being discussed as part of larger ceasefire negotiations.
"Part of negotiations is to reach a ceasefire agreement to have enough time and safety to collect final and more precise data" on the hostages held in Gaza Basem Naim said in a statement on Thursday. "Because they (hostages) are in different palaces, (being held) by different groups, some of them are under the rubble killed with our own people, and we negotiate to get heavy equipment for this purpose," he added.
Naim's statement was in response to questions from media outlets about whether Hamas has been rejecting the latest proposal, which was made in Cairo over the weekend, because it can not release 40 hostages in the first phase of a three-stage ceasefire deal.
According to an Israeli official and a source familiar with the discussions, Hamas indicated it is currently unable to identify and track down those 40 Israeli hostages, raising fears that more hostages may be dead than are publicly known.
CNN's record of the conditions of the hostages also suggests there are fewer than 40 living hostages who meet the proposed criteria.

Eclipse watchers stuck in heavy traffic driving home: "Worst traffic I've ever seen"
By Megan Cerullo
Edited By Aimee Picchi
Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 2:37 PM EDT / CBS News
Drivers returning home Monday from watching the solar eclipse in cities and towns in the path of totality described traffic jams that were among the worst they'd ever experienced, keeping them on roads all night and into Tuesday morning.
Indeed, cities and towns in the eclipse's path experienced some of their largest influxes of tourists in their histories, providing an economic boom to states from Texas to Vermont. While eclipse tourists tended to stagger their arrivals during the weekend leading up to the event, many departed roughly at the same time after the eclipse ended on Monday afternoon, clogging highways and local roads.
Traffic on I-89 in Vermont, which links Burlington, a city in the path of the totality, with Boston, and on the state's I-91 was heavy on Monday afternoon, according to the Vermont Agency of Transportation. "Worst traffic I've ever seen," wrote Richard Chen of the venture fund 1confirmation on X, formerly known as Twitter, after visiting northern Vermont to view the eclipse. But, he added, "[I]t was totally worth it."
It took us over 6 hours to drive 110 miles in MO. last night after the eclipse. I’ve never been in that long of a traffic jam. The majority of it we were only going 8 miles an hour. I guess that’s the price you pay for center line totality! Cell service was out too!🤯 pic.twitter.com/GGVkXEcLn7 — Anne Jones (@1neatgirl) April 9, 2024
Along I-75 near Dixie Highway around Perrysburg, Ohio, motorists were stuck in miles of bumper-to-bumper traffic, according to a local media report .
Michigan residents who had driven to Ohio to watch the eclipse described their return trips as taking twice as long as they should have, according to WTOL 11.
The Maine Department of Transportation said the state had 10 times the volume of normal traffic in its western and southern regions Monday evening, according to Fox23 Maine . Most eclipse watchers departed at around the same time on Monday, even though they had arrived at different points leading up to the eclipse, according to The Maine Turnpike Authority.
The Maine DOT had earlier advised visitors to arrive early and leave late to avoid congestion on the roads.
On TikTok, user @schoolhousecaulk said he had anticipated bad traffic in Vermont and that it was "worth it," despite driving overnight for 150 miles at a "snails pace."
At 5:30 in the morning, he said he finally reached his home in New York City. It had taken him 13 hours to drive 370 miles, he said.

Mayflower II will travel through Cape Cod Canal soon. Here's how you can track the ship.
As long as tides and weather cooperate, the Mayflower II will be homeward bound from the Mystic Seaport on April 10, setting off at about 10:30 a.m., according to the Plimoth Patuxet Museums .
For anyone hoping to catch a glimpse of the tall ship traversing the Cape Cod Canal on the way to her home berth alongside State Pier at Pilgrim Memorial State Park in Plymouth, her progress can be tracked by visiting www.tinyurl.com/trackMayflower2 , a service of marinetraffic.com.
Once it leaves the seaport, the Mayflower II will travel non-stop to Plymouth Harbor. The journey, approximately 78 miles, will take about 20 to 25 hours. It's possible its passage through the canal could begin in the early morning hours of April 11.
"We will give an ETA once the ship actually gets underway and we are better able to determine," said Plimoth Patuxet Director of Marketing & Communications Rob Kluin .
Although it may traverse the canal while it is still dark, with the lighting that exists along the waterway, spectators would still be able to see the ship as it passes through, according to Kluin. It will take the ship about an hour to traverse the canal.
The 102-foot wooden vessel will not be under sail — the sails have yet to be bent onto the yards, Kluin said — but will instead be towed the entire way by Stasinos Marine out of Weymouth, Kluin said. It will be crewed by the Plimoth Patuxet maritime preservation and operations team led by Capt. Whit Perry. They will not be in period costumes for the voyage.
The crew recently completed up-rigging the ship — putting up spars, blocks and rigging — in preparation for her trip home, according to a post on the Plimoth Patuxet Museums' Facebook page .
The 67-year-old ship, a full-scale reproduction of the vessel that brought the first European immigrants to the shores of Patuxet more than 400 years ago, has been in dry dock at the Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard in Mystic, Connecticut since arriving there Dec. 1. Over the winter, it underwent routine maintenance, including cleaning the bottom, painting and caulking the seams. The work was funded by a Save America's Treasures grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services .
The travel schedule is subject to change, depending on tide, weather and other factors. The Plimoth Patuxet Museums will also have updates on its Facebook page .
Mayflower II is slated to be open to the public at her Plymouth berth starting at 9 a.m. on April 13. According to Plimoth Patuxet Museums Executive Director Ellie Donovan, the ship has seen millions of visitors from around the world since it arrived in Plymouth as a gift to the museum from England in 1957.
“We are thankful for IMLS recognizing the importance of this treasured landmark and for helping to ensure she will be preserved for generations to come," Donovan said.

Texas mother arrested after allegedly leaving young children alone to take a cruise
A Texas woman was arrested after allegedly leaving her children at home alone to take a cruise.
Lakesha Woods Williams, 29, left her 8-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter by themselves in their Houston apartment to go on vacation on April 4, according to a criminal complaint.
She is charged with abandoning a child with intent to return.
Deputies with the Harris County Constable’s Office made a wellness check on Tuesday following a call for service. A witness told them that neighbors in the complex were concerned about the safety of two kids left on their own in one of the units. The witness said other residents had seen Williams leaving with bags and luggage and did not see her come back.
“The apartment was in complete disarray and had trash and left-over food all over the unit,” the document said. There was a “very potent smell of urine” inside as well.
“No adults were present supervising the juveniles, and none appeared to have been present since the Defendant’s departure,” the document continued. Deputies also found a camera in the apartment that Williams used to watch and talk to the kids during her trip, and her son had a phone he used to text her.
The document did not specify which cruise line Williams sailed with or where she went. “Deputies tried contacting the Defendant to make the scene, but she was not cooperating and was switching up her story on her whereabouts,” the document said.
The Houston Fire Department was called to ensure the children “were in good health and not malnourished,” and Child Protective Services reported to the scene before releasing the children to their aunt.
An attorney for Williams was not listed.

Live eclipse traffic: Heavy traffic building in central Ohio as travelers return south
Traffic along north and west Columbus remains heavy at 6 p.m. Monday as motorists make their way home from viewing the solar eclipse.
The heaviest traffic is U.S. 33 eastbound between Dublin and Marysville, and there are backups along southbound Interstate 71 north of Columbus and on I-70 west of the city, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).
Solar Eclipse 2024 live updates: Ohio traffic begins to slow; several state parks already at capacity
Here's what to know as travelers return following the eclipse:
Live traffic updates: traffic building, crash on U.S. 33 as travelers return south
The slowest travel at 6 p.m. is U.S. 33 between Marysville and Dublin as travelers make their way back to Columbus following the eclipse, according to ODOT.
A crash that blocked an eastbound lane of U.S. 33 in Marysville also was slowing traffic.
Travelers can expect up to a 30-minute delay between Marysville and Dublin along 33, according to ODOT.
Traffic is heavy elsewhere in the region, including the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 west of Columbus and the southbound lanes of I-71 north of I-270. Both areas reported 10-minute delays.
Separately, a disabled vehicle caused backups in the eastbound lanes of I-270 on the South Side, causing delays of about 15 minutes.
There was also a crash that closed the shoulders on I-270 south of Roberts Road that slowed traffic.
ODOT to eclipse travelers: Brace for slow return home
While the pace of traffic to the eclipse has been slow to build, ODOT spokesperson Matt Bruning urged people to prepare for a long return time as everyone who headed to the path of totality tries to get home.
“Patience will be key for sure, if you can stay put the longer you can after the event the easier it will be,” Bruning said. “History is a teacher, and it teaches that is not what happens, everyone leaves and wants to get home at the same time.”
North central Ohio saw slowdowns on routes to eclipse
In addition to heavy traffic on U.S. 33, ODOT's traffic cameras also showed heavy traffic on Ohio 315 near the Franklin-Delaware County line and the Ohio 315 and U.S. 23 interchange. The two left lanes of I-270 west were also closed at State Route 315 south due to a crash.
Traffic along Interstate 71 in Delaware County was also heavy near Alum Creek State Park.
Roadways in Powell near the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium were also seeing increased traffic and slowdowns.
On the East Side of Columbus, a ramp from Interstate 670 to U.S. 62 was closed in both directions due to a crash, but is now reopened.
How to check live traffic, see road cameras in Ohio
The ODOT OHGO website has live traffic updates, as well as access to dozens of traffic cameras throughout the state to make informed traveling decisions before heading out.
ODOT: Do not watch eclipse from side of highway
Bruning also said to be mindful of ODOT and state law enforcement workers, and said it was not legal for drivers to stop on the highway to watch the eclipse.
