National travel and tourism week.

Nationwide, United States

content media

National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) is an annual celebration that underscores travel’s essential role in driving our nation's economy, cultivating vibrant communities and forging connections.

Established in 1983, NTTW has become a cherished tradition, celebrating the U.S. travel community and highlighting how travel stimulates economic growth, creates quality jobs, inspires new businesses and elevates the quality of life for Americans every day.

Get ready to celebrate NTTW from May 19-25, 2024.

While NTTW has historically been celebrated during the first full week of May, this year’s NTTW dates were shifted due to a conflict with U.S. Travel’s IPW.

These Are the Busiest Travel Days of the Year, According to TSA

The holidays and holiday weekends often bring with them some of the most congested days at the country’s airports and on the roads..

The Tuesday and Wednesday just before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after Thanksgiving are often among the busiest travel days of the year.

Every year, millions of people embark on journeys, whether for business or leisure. After a few years of much less crowded airports due to the pandemic, the International Air Transport Association is reporting that passenger numbers are just about what they were prepandemic levels.

However, there have already been a number of days that have surpassed prepandemic levels and they’ve largely fallen right before or after holidays.

Take Independence Day, for example. In 2023, AAA projected that 4.17 million people flew over the July Fourth holiday period, surpassing the previous air travel record of 3.91 million travelers, set in 2019. Similarly, TSA screened a record number of passengers on the Sunday following Thanksgiving in 2022, with more than 2.56 million passengers.

According to the TSA, the busiest travel days of the year are usually the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after Thanksgiving . TSA recorded its highest passenger screening volume in its history on the Sunday after Thanksgiving in 2019, when nearly 2.9 million passengers passed through TSA checkpoints. But Thanksgiving and Christmas aren’t the only times we can expect busy airports. Here are the busiest travel day of the year.

Busiest travel days of the year

Thanksgiving and Christmas tend to be the busiest travel days of the year, but other holidays like Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Labor Day also see some of the highest volumes of air passengers.

So far this year, daily passenger numbers have been growing each month. In all of 2022, only one day had more than 2.5 million air passengers in the United States: November 27 (the Sunday after Thanksgiving), with 2.560 million. As of August 20, 2023, there had already been more than 75 days in the calendar year that had surpassed 2.5 million air passengers, according to TSA checkpoint data .

These have been the five busiest travel days in the last full year:

  • July 30: 2.793 million passengers
  • July 28: 2.785 million passengers
  • July 23: 2.789 million passengers
  • June 30: 2.884 million passengers (the new record for the busiest air travel day ever in the United States)
  • June 16: 2.785 million passengers

For reference, the busiest travel day in all of 2019 was November 27, with 2.882 million passengers.

The busiest travel days around Christmas and New Year’s, historically

As for Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the number of travelers is likely to ramp up during the end of December and into early January as well. In 2019, the highest number of travelers during the Christmas and New Year period was on Friday, December 17 (one week before Christmas), when 2.6 million travelers passed through TSA checkpoints. The second busiest day was Christmas Eve, with 2.58 million travelers, followed by the day after Christmas with 2.57 million travelers.

Tips for flying during the busiest times of the year

There are a few ways to make travel easier and clear busy TSA checkpoints more quickly, this holiday season.

Get TSA PreCheck, Clear, and/or Global Entry

Never have these security expediting services been more valuable than during the current congestion happening at U.S. airports. TSA PreCheck recently reduced its prices from $85 to $78 for a five-year membership, and it’s only $70 to renew . Clear costs $189 per year. International travelers should consider the $100 Global Entry, which includes TSA PreCheck, for expedited customs screening upon arrival in the United States—and there’s a secret way to speed up the application process .

Check to see if your airport has a fast-pass security lane you can book in advance—for free

No TSA PreCheck or Clear? Select U.S. airports are giving travelers the option to make an advance “fast pass” reservation to head to the front of the security line—free of charge. We’ve compiled the full list of airports that offer this service .

Consider traveling with carry-on only

For those who don’t want to risk their luggage getting lost during a busy travel time when airports remain understaffed, traveling with carry-on may be your best bet. Another alternative? Luggage-shipping services .

Know what you can bring through security

If you’re traveling with carry-on, know what you can and cannot pack in said carry-on. By now, you know you can only carry on liquids in containers 3.4 ounces or smaller, so be sure that holiday items such as gravy, cranberry sauce, or wine are either left behind or packed in a checked bag as they are considered liquids and could otherwise be confiscated (and create delays). Check AFAR’s in-depth guide to what foods you can bring through TSA to make sure that what you’ve packed in your carry-on can pass through security.

Thoroughly check your bags before leaving the house

TSA recommends that travelers fully empty their bags prior to packing to make sure that they don’t accidentally bring something to the airport that they didn’t intend to bring, which could cause further delays.

Monitor the weather

Check the weather and forecasts that are available on sites such as the National Weather Service , the Weather Channel , and AccuWeather so that you can be prepared for possible disruptions and establish back-up plans for delayed travel.

Get to the airport earlier than you’d think

The lines and wait times at the country’s airports (and abroad, too) are longer than they’ve been in years. Best to arrive early and have some extra time postsecurity than risk missing your flight waiting in an hours-long check-in or security line. Aim for at least two hours before domestic flights and at least three for international flights.

Know if and when you are due a refund because of a delayed or canceled flight

On September 1, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) launched a new Aviation Consumer Protection website to help travelers track down what kind of refunds or compensation their airline should provide when there is a cancellation or delay.

Airlines aren’t required to compensate passengers when flights are delayed or canceled due to problems deemed beyond the company’s control, like bad weather. They also aren’t required to provide a refund when the passenger initiates the cancellation or flight change. But a refund is required by U.S. law when the airline cancels, delays, or alters a flight, or passengers are involuntarily bumped from a flight that is oversold or due to issues originating from the airline, such as operational or staffing problems.

Additionally, after the federal government began cracking down on airlines this year, all of the major U.S. airlines vowed to provide meal vouchers for delays of more than three hours and to provide transfers and hotel stays to passengers affected by an overnight cancellation. They have all also agreed to rebook travelers on an alternate flight at no added cost due to a delay or cancellation and most will also rebook on a partner airline.

25 surprising travel facts that’ll make you see the world in a whole new light

Travel: we sort of know all about it, right? Wrong. Scratch beneath the surface and it turns out we know nothing of this world. Do you know how long the world’s shortest commercial flight lasts, for example? (clue: shorter than the time it takes to boil an egg.) How about which country has no rivers? Or what unconventional pizza topping is popular in Sweden ?

An image of the world from space showing one of the green continents.

With international travel currently off the table, why not use this time to swat up on surprising travel trivia, offering a few precious minutes of sweet relief from the constant news cycle and providing some fun facts to fill awkward pauses during video calls with friends and family; trust us, nothing plugs a silence better than a stat about how many steps from the nearest trash bin you are in Disneyland at all times.

Without further ado, here’s 25 travel facts that are certain to shock and surprise.

A stationary blue train in India, with passengers sitting and leaning out of the doorway and looking through the train's windows.

Trains, planes and automobiles...

1. The world’s longest commercial flight took around 30 hours.

The so-called ‘Double Sunrise’ service by Qantas, which ran from Australia to Sri Lanka from 1943-45, often lasted over 30 hours, with passengers seeing the sunrise twice. Today the longest commercial flight is the Singapore Airlines Singapore to New York route, with an average journey time of 17 hours and 50 minutes.

2. The shortest commercial flight takes less than two minutes.

Incredibly, the shortest commercial flight, operating between the neighbouring islands of Westray and Papa Westray in Scotland ’s Orkney islands , takes around one and a half minutes. With the fastest recorded flight taking less than 50 seconds.

3. Japanese railways hand out ‘certificates’ for delays of more than five minutes.

Japanese trains, reputedly the most punctual in the world, issue passengers with a ‘delay certificate’ if a train is running more than five minutes behind schedule. The documents can be shown to bosses or teachers to explain a passenger’s lateness. Delay certificates are also issued on some trains in Germany and in Paris .

4. The most expensive airport to city taxi ride costs around ÂŁ190.

Any budget traveller worth their salt attempts to avoid airport taxis at all costs, but anyone keeping an eye on their finances should certainly avoid jumping in a cab from Tokyo ’s Narita Airport. According to a study by Moneycorp (a currency exchange company), the ride is the most expensive airport-to-city transfer in the world, costing an average of £191/$235 one way.

5. India’s trains transport roughly 23 million passengers each day.

That’s the entire population of Australia . Additionally, if laid out in a single line, the tracks from India’s railway network could circle the world one and a half times.

An aerial view of Niagara Falls, a group of three waterfalls at the southern end of Niagara Gorge.

Things you didn’t know about countries

6. Saudi Arabia has no rivers.

The country in the Arabian peninsula has no permanent rivers. It is one of the 17 countries in the world without a single river flowing through it.

7. In Ethiopia the current year is 2013.

Ethiopia maintains its own calendar, which, due to a difference in the perceived date of the Annunciation (the proclamation of the birth of Christ), is seven to eight years behind the Gregorian calendar (which is used as standard across most of the world). In Ethiopia the new year also begins on either August 29 or August 30.

8. It is the same time at both ends of China.

Despite spanning five geographical time zones, China only has one set time, which is observed throughout the country. China Standard Time is UTC+8.

9. The UK has the world’s longest country name.

The UK ’s official title of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland makes it the longest recognised country name in the world.

10. Alaska is both the westernmost and easternmost state in the USA.

Alaska ’s Aleutian Islands are actually located west of the 180th Meridian (the line that divides the eastern and western hemisphere), making it the only US state to be partly located in the eastern hemisphere.

A large seafood pizza displayed on a wooden board. The tomato and cheese pizza is topped with squid, muscles and other shellfish.

Foodie facts...

11. The most ordered meal on Deliveroo, a leading takeout app, in 2019 was a Hawaiian dish of raw fish.

Of all the restaurants served by the app, which operates in over 200 cities around the world, the most ordered meal was the PokĂ© Signature Super ProtĂ©inĂ© – a Hawaiian dish with raw fish as the core ingredient – from restaurant Pokawa in the city of Paris . Less exotic, a humble cheeseburger from the London branch of chain restaurant Five Guys was the second most ordered dish on the app.

12. Russia only classified beer as an alcoholic drink in 2011

Remarkably before then any drink with less than 10% alcohol was considered a ‘foodstuff’.

13. Pilots and co-pilots do not eat the same meal before a flight.

As part of standard convention, pilots and co-pilots do not eat the same food before a flight in case of food poisoning (or worse). If one of the pilots is incapacitated (unable to leave the bathroom) then the other pilot can take over.

14. Banana is a popular pizza topping in Sweden.

Often paired with curry powder believe it or not.

15. Instant noodles topped a Japanese poll of the country’s greatest inventions of the 20th century.

In the poll, conducted in the year 2000 by Fuji Research Institute, respondents placed instant noodles at the top of the list, followed by karaoke in second place. Incidentally karaoke translates from Japanese into English as ‘empty orchestra’.

The Eiffel Tower as viewed from across the Seine and framed neatly by two leafy trees in autumn colours

Lesser-known aspects of famous landmarks...

16. Despite what people say, the Great Wall of China is not visible from space.

Even from low Earth orbit the structure requires magnification to be seen by the human eye.

17. The Eiffel Tower was initially greatly disliked by the Parisian art community upon opening.

The iconic tower was labelled as ‘monstrous’ and ‘ridiculous’ after it was unveiled to the world. It’s even claimed that contemporary writer Guy de Maupassant disliked the structure so much that he ate lunch in the tower every day because it was the only place in Paris where the landmark was not visible.

18. The scenic Great Ocean Road, that sweeps along the coast of Victoria, Australia, is actually a war memorial.

Built by soldiers and dedicated to those who lost their lives in WWI, the road serves as the largest war memorial in the world.

19. Sudan has more ancient pyramids than Egypt.

Sources vary, but Sudan is claimed to be home to around 250 pyramid structures, that were built by the rulers of the ancient Kushite kingdoms between 2500BC to 300AD. Egypt is thought to have just over 100 pyramids.

20. The minarets of the Taj Mahal lean outwards slightly.

This was done deliberately to ensure that if the structure collapsed the minarets would fall away from the central tomb, and not destroy it. It’s also true that a team of 20,000 artisans and craftsmen built the iconic structure, but the popular story about them all being amputated by Shah Jahan, the ruler who commissioned it, upon completion (so they’d never build anything as beautiful), is most likely a myth.

An actress dressed as Mary Poppins smiles at a young child as she leads a line of children in song and dance in front of Cinderella's castle during Disney's 60th Diamond Celebration at Disneyland California.

Everything else...

21. There are currently 320,000 people learning ‘Klingon’ (the fictional language featured in television show Star Trek ) on language app Duolingo.

English is the most popular language on the app, with 34 million people undertaking lessons since the beginning of 2020.

22. On the island of Yap, a state of Micronesia, rocks are used as currency.

Each rock’s worth is based on its size and its history (where it came from). Though US dollars have now started to be used for everyday purchases on the island, rocks are still used for ceremonial transactions (during weddings, for example). Yap also uses turmeric, shells and cloth as official currency.

23. If it was as densely populated as New York City, the entire world's population could fit into the US state of Texas.

We wouldn’t have all that much room, but, with the rest of the planet uninhabited, there’d be plenty of places to go to escape the crowds.

24. You’re never more than 30 steps away from a trash can in Disneyland.

The story goes that Walt Disney used to observe visitors in the park and see how many steps they took before littering, as a result a litter bin is never more than 30 steps away in any Disney park. Another of Walt’s lesser-known Disneyland additions was the creation of a secret bar hidden inside the – then otherwise 'dry' – park, which he used to entertain personal guests and sponsors. The speakeasy-style venue, located behind a large door in the New Orleans Square section of the park, now runs as a private members club with an annual membership fee of $10,000.

25. You don't need to wait an hour after eating before you can swim safely.

Despite what your mother always told you, there is no medical data that suggests you can’t swim on a full stomach. It can, however, feel uncomfortable, and potentially lead to a feeling of nausea, so it’s best to take a short pause after polishing off your sandwich before you go crashing into the surf.

A Guide To The Importance Of Rest Days While Traveling

When planning a travel experience – be it a simple week in the sun or a longer-term trip that will span several months – it is easy to quickly fill your itinerary with a thousand and one different ideas. Whatever your destination, there simply seems to be so much to do and so many experiences you want to enjoy that before you know it, you’ve filled every day of your trip with a seemingly endless list of activities.

globetrotter reading map

While it is entirely natural to be hugely enthused about your intended destination, when travel schedules become too overloaded, they can quickly become problematic.

What problems can a packed travel schedule list cause?

The first issue you may experience is a simple matter of feeling overwhelmed. When visiting a different country, there’s a huge amount to absorb and adapt to; you’ll be eating unusual food, negotiating unfamiliar transport networks, trying to decipher signs written in languages you may not speak, dealing with jet lag – and much more besides. Of course, these differences are usually one of the main reasons to travel, and immersing yourself in a different culture and way of life can be hugely enjoyable, but they’re also a lot to process. As a result, adding a hectic, non-stop schedule on top of the culture shock can easily become too much to deal with.

So it’s best to keep your activity plans sparse?

Not necessarily, though it does seem like the most sensible option on initial inspection – after all, limiting yourself to just a few activities for the duration of your trip is just one way of ensuring you don’t become overwhelmed. However, the idea of cutting down a destination to-do list is anathema to the majority of travelers; the idea is to explore and enjoy the area, to see and do things that they wouldn’t be able to do anywhere else in the world – who wants to enforce limitations before even arriving in their destination country? If you feel you can cut back your list of activities beforehand, then by all means do so, but if you dislike the idea, it’s clear that another solution is required.

Thankfully, there is a middle ground; a way of arranging your travel schedule that allows you to avoid being overwhelmed, but also ensures you are able to see, do, and experience everything your destination has to offer: you can include rest days as part of your travel schedule.

What are rest days?

laptop

Rest days are days that are included in your schedule, but are not specific ‘travel’ days – instead, they’re more akin to a Saturday or Sunday you would spend at home. If you want to do something fun on a rest day, then you absolutely can – there’s no need to stay in your hotel and literally “rest” if you don’t feel doing so is necessary or beneficial. Alternatively, you could use your rest day to catch up on work emails, or if you’re enrolled in an online course such as MSN program or MA degree, you could catch up on the latest assignments – the point is, the day is yours to use absolutely as you see fit on the day. No plans; no scheduling; no pre-booked appointments – just whatever works for you in the moment.

Why are rest days so important?

When traveling, a heavy itinerary can quickly begin to seem like a chore, especially if you begin to feel overwhelmed. The list of must-see sites and adventures can quickly begin to chafe; while the list may have seemed excited and action-packed when first compiled, in practice, rushing from one thing to the next can quickly become tiring.

As we have emphasized, rest days are simply an opportunity to do whatever you want on that specific day – there’s no list of sights to follow, no things you have to do. Essentially, rest days give you a sense of freedom.

Why not just make every day a rest day, if they can be used for anything?

You could do if you wish, but most travelers tend to respond well to some form of structure to their overall plans, especially if the list of things they want to see, do, and experience is long. There’s something reassuring about having a set schedule on some days, but allowing your plans to be more relaxed and flexible on others. You’ll benefit from the reassurance that you’re still going to do everything you want to do thanks to the active days, and also from the sense that you can do anything – or nothing, if you prefer! – on rest days. Essentially, a mix of activity and rest days allows you to get the balance of every trip just right.

How many rest days should I plan into the schedule for my next trip?

The number of rest days you plan for your next trip is entirely up to you – there’s no perfect answer that works for everyone. For some people, a single rest day over the course of a two-week vacation is more than enough; for others, a higher number of rest days tends to work better. Unfortunately, there’s no way of knowing how many days will work for you specifically if you have never tried the idea before.

Due to the above, it may be best to plan just a single rest day for your next trip. This allows you the chance to experiment with the concept and see if you find rest days useful, but doesn’t dominate too much time in your original plan, so you can still ensure you see and do everything you want to do. When you return, you can then reflect on how the rest day felt, and decide if just the one rest day worked well, or if you might benefit from more rest days in future.

In conclusion

making plans

It’s entirely natural to want to see and do as much as possible, but incorporating rest days into your schedule can help to ensure you find the perfect balance between “too much” and “not enough” every time you travel.

Hours of Work for Travel

Fact sheet: hours of work for travel, description.

In limited circumstances, travel time may be considered hours of work. The rules on travel hours of work depend on whether an employee is covered by or exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). For FLSA-exempt employees, the crediting of travel time as hours of work is governed under title 5 rules-in particular, 5 U.S.C. 5542(b)(2) and 5544(a)(3) and 5 CFR 550.112(g) and (j). For FLSA-covered employees, travel time is credited if it is qualifying hours of work under either the title 5 rules or under OPM's FLSA regulations-in particular, 5 CFR 551.401(h) and 551.422.

Employee Coverage

Title 5 overtime laws and regulations apply to most FLSA-exempt Federal employees, including General Schedule and prevailing rate employees. Certain employees, such as members of the Senior Executive Service, are not eligible for overtime pay or other premium pay under title 5. (See 5 U.S.C. 5541(2) and 5 CFR 550.101 for coverage rules.)

OPM's FLSA regulations apply to most FLSA-covered Federal employees. (See 5 U.S.C. 5542(b)(2) and 5544(a)(3) and 5 CFR 551.102.) An employee may determine his or her FLSA status by checking block 35 of the most recent Notification of Personnel Action (SF-50) to find out whether his or her position is nonexempt (N) or exempt (E) from the overtime pay provisions of the FLSA. Alternatively, an employee may obtain a determination from his or her servicing personnel office.

Overtime Work

In general, overtime hours are hours of work that are ordered or approved (or are "suffered or permitted" for FLSA-covered employees) and are performed by an employee in excess of 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a workweek. (See 5 U.S.C. 5542(a), 5544(a), and 6121(6) and (7), and 5 CFR 550.111 and 551.501. Note exceptions.)

Travel That is Hours of Work Under Title 5

Under 5 U.S.C. 5542(b)(2) and 5 CFR 550.112(g), official travel away from an employee's official duty station is hours of work if the travel is-

  • within the days and hours of the employee's regularly scheduled administrative workweek, including regularly scheduled overtime hours, or
  • involves the performance of work while traveling (such as driving a loaded truck);
  • is incident to travel that involves the performance of work while traveling (such as driving an empty truck back to the point of origin);
  • is carried out under arduous and unusual conditions (e.g., travel on rough terrain or under extremely severe weather conditions); or
  • results from an event that could not be scheduled or controlled administratively by any individual or agency in the executive branch of Government (such as training scheduled solely by a private firm or a job-related court appearance required by a court subpoena).

An agency may not adjust an employee's normal regularly scheduled administrative workweek solely to include travel hours that would not otherwise be considered hours of work.

Travel That is Hours of Work Under the FLSA

For FLSA-covered employees, time spent traveling is hours of work if-

  • an employee is required to travel during regular working hours (i.e., during the regularly scheduled administrative workweek);
  • an employee is required to work during travel (e.g., by being required to drive a Government vehicle as part of a work assignment);
  • an employee is required to travel as a passenger on a 1-day assignment away from the official duty station; or
  • an employee is required to travel as a passenger on an overnight assignment away from the official duty station during hours on nonworkdays that correspond to the employee's regular working hours. (See 5 CFR 551.422(a).)

Official Duty Station

"Official duty station" is defined in 5 CFR 550.112(j) and 551.422(d). An agency may prescribe a mileage radius of not greater than 50 miles to determine whether an employee's travel is within or outside the limits of the employee's official duty station for determining entitlement to overtime pay for travel.

Administrative Workweek

An administrative workweek is a period of 7 consecutive calendar days designated in advance by the head of an agency under 5 U.S.C. 6101. The regularly scheduled administrative workweek is the period within the administrative workweek during which the employee is scheduled to work in advance of the administrative workweek. (See definitions in 5 CFR 610.102. See also 5 CFR 550.103 and 551.421.)

Commuting Time

For FLSA-covered employees, normal commuting time from home to work and from work to home is not hours of work. (See 5 CFR 551.422(b).) However, commuting time may be hours of work to the extent that the employee is required to perform substantial work under the control and direction of the employing agency-i.e., productive work of a significant nature that is an integral and indispensable part of the employee's principal activities. The fact that an employee is driving a Government vehicle in commuting to and from work is not a basis for determining that commuting time is hours of work. (See Bobo decision cited in the References section.)

Similarly, for FLSA-exempt employees, normal commuting time from home to work and from work to home is not hours of work. (See 5 CFR 550.112(j)(2).) However, commuting time may be hours of work to the extent that the employee is officially ordered or approved to perform substantial work while commuting.

Normal "home-to-work/work-to-home" commuting includes travel between an employee's home and a temporary duty location within the limits of the employee's official duty station. For an employee assigned to a temporary duty station overnight, normal "home-to-work/work-to-home" commuting also includes travel between the employee's temporary place of lodging and a work site within the limits of the temporary duty station.

If an employee (whether FLSA-covered or exempt) is required to travel directly between home and a temporary duty location outside the limits of the employee's official duty station, the time the employee would have spent in normal commuting must be deducted from any hours of work outside the regularly scheduled administrative workweek (or, for FLSA covered employees, outside corresponding hours on a nonwork day) that may be credited for the travel time. (The travel time is credited as hours of work only as allowed under the applicable rules-e.g., for an FLSA-covered employee, if the travel is part of a 1-day assignment away from the official duty station.)

  • 5 U.S.C. 5542(b)(2) (General Schedule employees)
  • 5 U.S.C. 5544(a)(3) (Prevailing rate employees)
  • 5 CFR 550.112(g) and (j), 610.102, and 610.123
  • 5 CFR 551.401(h) and 551.422 (OPM's FLSA regulations)
  • Decision by United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Jerry Bobo v. United States , 136 F.3rd 1465 (Fed. Cir. 1998) affirming Court of Federal Claims decision of same name, 37 Fed. Cl. 690 (Fed. Cl. 1997).
  • Section 4 of the Portal-to-Portal Act of 1947 (61 Stat. 84) as amended in 1996 by section 2102 of Public Law 104-188. (See 29 U.S.C. 254.)

This 2024 Earth Day poster is an ocean themed vertical 15x30 illustration created from NASA satellite cloud imagery overlaid on ocean data. The white cloud imagery wraps around shapes, defining three whales and a school of fish. Swirly cloud patterns, called Von Kármán Vortices, create the feeling of movement in the composition. The focal point is a cyclone in the upper third of the poster. At the center flies the recently launched PACE satellite. The ocean imagery – composed of blues, aquas, and greens – is filled with subtle color changes and undulating patterns created by churning sediment, organic matter and phytoplankton.

For nearly five decades, the agency and its partners have collected data across all of the world’s ocean basins with satellites, airplane-mounted instruments, and space shuttles and stations.

On April 11, NASA released the first images from the Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) satellite, which was launched on Feb. 8, 2024, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. PACE joined the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite and Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich in helping NASA revolutionize our understanding of our oceans. You can see one of the images below, in which bright pink and green colors indicate different communities of phytoplankton.

NASA’s PACE satellite’s Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) detects light across a hyperspectral range, which gives scientists new information to differentiate communities of phytoplankton – a unique ability of NASA’s newest Earth-observing satellite. This first image released from OCI identifies two different communities of these microscopic marine organisms in the ocean off the coast of South Africa on Feb. 28, 2024. The central panel of this image shows Synechococcus in pink and picoeukaryotes in green. The left panel of this image shows a natural color view of the ocean, and the right panel displays the concentration of chlorophyll-a, a photosynthetic pigment used to identify the presence of phytoplankton.

Discover more about PACE and NASA’s Earth-observing fleet during an in-person celebration. The event will be hosted at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., on April 18 and 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT. The event will include:

  • More than a dozen hands-on Earth science activities, such as a 3D glacier puzzle and natural hazards trivia
  • Instructions for creating animated GIFs using NASA Earth science imagery
  • Opportunities to engage with the Earth Information Center, which offers data-rich visualizations and immersive experiences that show how our planet is changing.
  • Two new stories that will screen on the Earth Information Center’s Hyperwall. One highlights how local African communities use NASA Earth science data in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute to monitor forest habitat for chimpanzees and agricultural land use over time. The other explores how the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency monitors methane emissions from landfills with NASA remote-sensing data.

Online, explore how NASA works to understand our oceans at a global scale. Visit science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-day/ for dozens of resources, including:

  • Downloadable guides for creating ocean currents in a test tube and a flip book showing how rivers change over time

The Best and Worst Times to Travel This Fourth of July

Liz Hund

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

With the Fourth of July falling on a Thursday this year, it is expected to be busier than ever, with travelers taking advantage of the extra long weekend. According to data from the farecasting app Hopper , more than 12 million travelers are scheduled to fly this holiday weekend — and that doesn't even include those who are hitting the road. The American Automobile Association (AAA) is expecting some 41.4 million drivers to pile into cars for an Independence Day getaway.

Given the increase in holiday travel both in the air and on the roads, travelers can expect major delays. To help you plan your holiday travels, here are the best and worst times to travel this Fourth of July weekend.

If You're Hitting the Road

AAA is expecting the number of July 4 drivers to increase 4.1% from last year, and cause delays nearly four times longer than usual. Be sure to pack the car with snacks and entertainment for the kids, here are some of our favorites . As for gas, AAA reported that it's gone up 5 cents this week, bringing the average price to $2.71 per gallon. But this is still low, compared to the $3 average gas price over Memorial Day weekend. (Just be sure to keep a credit card that offers a solid return on gas spending in your wallet, like the Citi PremierÂź Card, which offers 3 points per dollar on both gas and air travel.)

Of course, certain times are better than others to hit the road. AAA says that the afternoon of Wednesday, July 3 is going to be the absolute worst time to travel, as it will be a mix of commuters and travelers. One of the best times to travel is actually going to be in the early morning of July 4. That may seem less than ideal for many drivers because it means less time at your destination — but it also promises less time on the road.

AAA put together a chart with the worst and best times to travel, and expected delays, as it varies by city.

travel related days

New York City-area drivers should brace for the worst delays, especially during the afternoon of July 3. Boston traffic delays could be nearly three-and-a-half times as bad as normal, but the worst hours for travel will be on Friday, July 5 between 10am and 12pm (so get a super early start or sleep in and wait to leave until after lunch). Seattle will be the third-worst city for traffic delays, with the worst congestion between noon and 2pm on Thursday, July 4.

Google also analyzed data from years prior and came up with a handy tool travelers can use to search for the best and worst times to travel specific to a destination.

If You're Flying

Over the past month, TSA has experienced six of the busiest travel days in the agency's history . And with 12 million travelers scheduled to fly between July 3 and July 7 (July 7 being the expected peak), flyers can expect to experience this madness firsthand, so plan to arrive early.

According to TravelPulse's analysis of last year's holiday traffic patterns, 10 routes were far more popular than others. Flights originating from Los Angeles International (LAX) took four of the 10 spots, and Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA) was also a repeat offender. Though East Coast airports did make an appearance, flyers on the West Coast should brace themselves for the longest potential airport security lines.

  • Los Angeles International (LAX) to San Francisco International (SFO)
  • Los Angeles International to Las Vegas McCarran International Airport (LAS)
  • Los Angeles International to New York-JFK
  • New York-LGA to Chicago O'Hare (ORD)
  • Daniel K. Inouye International (HNL) to Kahului Airport (OGG)
  • Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA) to Portland International (PDX)
  • Los Angeles International to Seattle-Tacoma International
  • Ted Stevens Anchorage International (ANC) to Seattle-Tacoma International
  • Seattle-Tacoma International to San Francisco International
  • Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International (ATL) to Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International (FLL)

Historically speaking, Fourth of July weekend has not been one of the busiest travel times for flyers, as most travelers take to the roads for the holiday. However, given the recent trends with TSA, record amount of travelers this summer due to low flight costs and the staggering 12 million people scheduled to fly this week, it's safe to assume you should arrive early and have your lounge access squared away ahead of time.

If you can't avoid traveling during peak travel days, be sure to take advantage of expedited screening options. If you have TSA PreCheck , be sure your membership is still active and that you include your Known Traveler Number (KTN) when booking air travel. Another option, consider CLEAR . At participating airports , CLEAR can be used in conjunction with TSA PreCheck or by itself, and it allows travelers to access exclusive screening areas, putting them at the front of the line. You can even sign-up for CLEAR on the spot if the regular line looks intimidating.

Fever in the Returned Traveler

Cdc yellow book 2024.

Author(s): Mary Elizabeth Wilson

Fever often accompanies serious illness in returned travelers. The most common life-threatening tropical disease associated with fever in returned travelers is malaria. Because an increased temperature can signal a rapidly progressive infection, initiate early evaluation, especially in people who have visited areas with malaria in recent months (see Sec. 5, Part 3, Ch. 16, Malaria ).

The initial focus in evaluating a febrile returned traveler should be on identifying infections that are potentially life-threatening, treatable, or transmissible. In some instances, public health officials must be alerted if the traveler was possibly contagious while traveling or infected with a pathogen of public health concern (e.g., Ebola virus, yellow fever virus) at the origin or destination. During an outbreak (e.g., the Ebola epidemic in West Africa), special screening protocols could be needed. A specific cause for fever might not be identified in ≥25% of returned travelers.

Narrowing the Differential Diagnosis

Most illnesses in returned travelers (e.g., diarrhea, pneumonia, or pyelonephritis) are caused by common and cosmopolitan infections that must be considered along with the more unusual ones. Because the geographic area of travel determines the relative likelihood of major causes of fever, identifying where the febrile patient traveled and/or lived is essential (see Table 11-09 ). Ask about travel-related activities (e.g., cave exploration, dental or medical care, sexual activity, newly acquired tattoos); exposures (e.g., animal bites, freshwater exposure in schistosomiasis-endemic areas); and living arrangements (e.g., dwelling type, use of mosquito nets, air conditioning, window screens), any of which might elicit useful clues. Pretravel preparation (e.g., vaccinations, malaria prophylaxis) will markedly reduce (although not eliminate) the likelihood of some infections, so this is also a relevant part of the history.

Because each infection has a characteristic incubation period (the range is extremely wide for some), define timing of exposure for different geographic areas; this can help exclude some infections from the differential diagnosis. Most serious febrile infections manifest within the first month after return from tropical travel, yet infections related to travel exposures occasionally occur months or even >1 year after return. In the United States, >90% of reported cases of Plasmodium falciparum malaria manifest ≤30 days of return, but almost half of cases of P. vivax malaria manifest >30 days after return.

Table 11-09 Common causes of fever in the tropics by geographic area

Findings requiring urgent attention.

Presence of fever plus certain associated signs, symptoms, or laboratory findings can suggest specific infections (see Table 11-10 ). Findings that should prompt urgent attention include hemorrhage, low blood pressure, altered consciousness, and high respiratory rate. Even if an initial physical examination is unremarkable, repeat the exam if the diagnosis is not clear, because new findings might appear that will help in the diagnostic process (e.g., skin lesions, a tender liver). Although most febrile illnesses in returned travelers are related to infections, bear in mind that other conditions, including pulmonary emboli and drug hypersensitivity reactions, also can be associated with fever.

Fever accompanied by a syndrome (see Table 11-11 ) deserves further scrutiny, because it could indicate a disease of public health concern, for which immediate infection containment and control measures are indicated.

Travelers visiting friends and relatives (VFR) often do not seek pretravel medical advice and are at greater risk for some diseases than other travelers. GeoSentinel Surveillance Network data showed that a larger proportion of VFR travelers than tourist travelers presented with serious (requiring hospitalization), potentially preventable travel-related illnesses (see Sec. 9, Ch. 9, Visiting Friends & Relatives: VFR Travel ).

Table 11-11 Febrile syndromes in travelers: potential diseases of public health concern requiring immediate infection containment & control

Changes over time.

Clinicians have access to online resources that provide information about geographic-specific risks, disease activity, and other useful information (e.g., drug-susceptibility patterns for pathogens). Infectious disease outbreaks are dynamic, as demonstrated by the Ebola epidemics in West Africa, spread of chikungunya virus in the Americas beginning in late 2013, nosocomial spread of travel-associated Middle East respiratory syndrome in Korea in 2015, the rapid spread of Zika virus in the Americas in 2015 and 2016, and the global spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In contrast, because of the wide use of vaccine, hepatitis A infection is now infrequently seen in US travelers.

Infections with typical seasonal transmission in the United States might occur at different times of the year, or throughout the year in the tropics and subtropics. For example, influenza transmission can occur throughout the year in tropical areas, and the peak season in the Southern Hemisphere is late spring/early summer into the fall; clinicians in the Northern Hemisphere should be alert to the possibility of influenza outside the usual wintertime influenza season.

Travelers can become colonized or infected by bacteria resistant to commonly used antibiotics (see Sec. 11, Ch. 5, Antimicrobial Resistance ). Bacteria that produce extended-spectrum β-lactamases and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales, including bacteria expressing the metalloprotease NDM-1, have been found in infections acquired during travel, sometimes related to elective or emergency medical care. Travelers to South and Southeast Asia are at high risk of acquiring multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales. Enteric fever (typhoid or paratyphoid fever) has become increasingly resistant to fluoroquinolones, third-generation cephalosporins, and azithromycin, especially in Asia (see Sec. 5, Part 1, Ch. 24, Typhoid & Paratyphoid Fever ).

Clinical Tips

For more clinical tips about fever in returning travelers, see Box 11-01 .

Box 11-01 Fever in returning travelers: clinical tips

ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANT ORGANISMS (see Sec. 11, Ch. 5, Antimicrobial Resistance ) Travelers could be infected or colonized with drug-resistant pathogens, especially travelers who were hospitalized abroad or who took antimicrobial agents to treat travelers’ diarrhea.

ARBOVIRAL INFECTIONS (see the chapters in Section 5: Chikungunya , Dengue , Zika ) Dengue is the most common cause of febrile illness among people who seek medical care after travel to Latin America or Asia.

Other arboviral infections are emerging as causes of fever in travelers, including chikungunya and Zika viruses.

COMMON INFECTIONS

Do not overlook common infections (e.g., diarrhea, pneumonia, pyelonephritis) in the search for exotic diagnoses.

FEVER & BLEEDING (see Sec. 5, Part 1, Ch. 10, Leptospirosis ; Sec. 5, Part 1, Ch. 13, Meningococcal Disease ; Sec. 5, Part 1, Ch. 18, Rickettsial Diseases ; and Sec. 5, Part 2, Ch. 25, Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers )

Viral hemorrhagic fevers other than dengue (e.g., Ebola, Lassa fever, Marburg hemorrhagic fever) are important to identify but rare in travelers.

Because of the need to institute prompt, specific treatment, always consider the possibility of bacterial infections (e.g., leptospirosis, meningococcemia, rickettsial infections) that can also cause fever and hemorrhage.

INFECTION CONTROL & PUBLIC HEALTH

Keep in mind infection control, public health implications, and requirements for reportable diseases.

MALARIA (see Sec. 5, Part 3, Ch.16, Malaria )

Malaria is the most common cause of acute undifferentiated fever after travel to sub-Saharan Africa and some other tropical areas.

Malaria can progress rapidly (especially Plasmodium falciparum ); evaluate promptly and initiate treatment immediately, if diagnosed.

A history of taking malaria chemoprophylaxis does not exclude the possibility of malaria.

Patients with malaria can be afebrile at the time of evaluation, but typically give a history of fever or chills; have prominent respiratory (including acute respiratory distress syndrome), gastrointestinal, or central nervous system findings.

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS (see Sec. 11, Ch. 10, Sexually Transmitted Infections )

Sexually transmitted infections, including acute HIV, can cause acute febrile infections.

Travel | travel: how to visit new orleans during the annual jazz & heritage festival.

travel related days

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival provides an overflowing musical feast each day for two weekends, Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. But the city doesn’t fall quiet when night descends and the fairgrounds close. Nighttime in New Orleans is always bright with music, but it never sounds fuller and sweeter than those 11 nights during the festival, which this year goes from April 25 through May 5.

Keith Abel, who gives music-related walking tours in the city, emphasizes that the special shows go nonstop, from the first night of the festival to the last. For the opening night, he recommends the Threadhead Cultural Foundation’s free concert in the New Orleans Botanical Garden. And each day you can leave the festival and walk two blocks to a street party called Sauvage Fest.

The final Sunday at 1 p.m. will feature a street naming, complete with a second line band, honoring influential piano player Professor Longhair. (It starts at the Old Caledonia Inn on Rampart Street and goes to 1738 Terpsichore Street.) “That’s so New Orleans,” Abel says. And after the festival’s finale, head to Papa Mali’s Poylester Birthday Party for a tribute to David Lindley featuring The Iguanas, Alvin Youngblood Hart and others at the intimate Chickie Wah Wah’s. “It’s as big as my house,” Abel says.

But there are dozens of clubs and theaters featuring performances by the musicians in town for the festival. George Porter Jr., the bass player for the Meters who now has his own band, explains that many New Orleans acts spend much of the year on the road because local clubs’ exclusivity requirements make it difficult to earn a living at home — but those requirements vanish during Jazz Fest so the venues are packed each night with visiting stars and local legends.

“There’s lots of gigs to be had for a lot of cats,” says Ivan Neville, son of Aaron Neville of the Neville Brothers and leader of Dumpstaphunk. “Everyone comes to play shows, which gives people so many different choices and different types of music. This is the most amazing fun-filled, musically enriching, soul-feeding 11 days, man. There’s nothing like it.”

He says the first super jam was organized years ago by Zigaboo Modeliste, the Meters’ drummer, for a Thursday night show at 2 a.m. at the old Howlin’ Wolf location (another club, The Republic, is now there). “There was a line around the block of people waiting to get in,” Neville recalls. “That was something to behold and led to promoters bringing together different configurations of musicians for super jams during Jazz Fest.”

Porter says most tourists just think Bourbon Street is New Orleans, “but the bands there just play the top hits so why even bother — that’s music you can hear anywhere in the world. You’ve got to get off Bourbon Street to clubs like the Maple Leaf Bar or Tipitina’s to really hear New Orleans.”

Neville’s favorite club is Tipitina’s, which has survived for nearly 50 years — the members of the band Galactic bought it in 2018 to help keep it alive — but he says visitors should also check out Chickie Wah Wah, Howlin’ Wolf, DBA and Blue Nile.

“If you’ve never been here you’ve got to experience everything you can,” he says. “You should eat at Jacque-Imo’s which is right next door to the Maple Leaf Bar and then go in there.”

With so much to choose from, perhaps the easiest way to build a schedule is to focus on four members of New Orleans musical royalty: Porter, Neville, Galactic, and Trombone Shorty … If you can keep up with them:  Porter, who is 76, will be playing 21 shows across that span, although in a concession to age he says this is the first year he’s not playing a show that starts after 1 a.m.

“He’s inspiring, if not insane,” says Robert Mercurio, Galactic’s bass player, who is plenty busy himself — playing with Galactic, with FiyaPowa (which includes Galactic drummer Stanton Moore, Neville and other members of Dumpstaphunk), and with Dragon Smoke. That band, which rarely plays outside Jazz Fest, features Mercurio, Moore Neville and Eric Lindell. They play on the home turf of Tipitina’s on the Tuesday between wekeends but Mercurio says they started years ago at a place called The Dragon’s Den off Frenchman Street which he recommends as “a really cool room.”

These days, of course, Mercurio is mostly playing at Tipitina’s, which is “a cultural center for New Orleans music lovers,” he says, which means the band feels tremendous responsibility as owners.

“People here view it as their bar, we are just stewards. Playing here was always magical but since we took over that feeling just has been elevated. Some stages just feel like a cold shower where you’re just constantly trying to find that right temperature. But the second we step on stage at Tipitina’s it’s like we’re just soaking in a beautiful warm bath.”

While Mercurio doesn’t get to see many other shows during these eleven days —“I’m either eating, sleeping, rehearsing or performing” — he sees plenty of other musicians. “Tipitina has a loose side door — you never know who is going to stop by and play,” he says, adding that, “we  stretch out and jam a little more than normal here.”

Neville says that all these musicians in all these configurations frequently choose songs they know so they can rehearse on their own. “If you do your homework you can show up for soundcheck knowing what’s going on,” he says. Still, part of the thrill is knowing things won’t always go smoothly in these jam sessions. “There’s still a bit of an edge, which adds to that feeling of spontaneity. Sometimes the fun is knowing there could be a train wreck happening
although hopefully I’m not involved in any of those train wrecks.”

While most of the best shows are in clubs, where there’s time for bands to jam and room for fans to dance, the one worthy theater show is Trombone Shorty’s eighth “Treme Threauxdown” at the Saenger Theater on Saturday, April 27.

With the deaths of many of New Orleans’ elders in the last decade (Alan Toussaint, Art and Charles Neville, and Dr. John), Shorty has, to some extent, become the face of the city’s music scene, deftly blending jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop and rock — all with a great balance of virtuosity and showmanship.

Shorty, whose real name is Troy Andrews, attracts an endless list of stars to the Threauxdown, which has featured Galactic and Dumpstaphunk but also Mavis Staples, Dr. John, Joan Jett, Gary Clark Jr, Usher, and Steve Miller as announced guests, plus spontaneous additions like Jon Batiste and Wyclef Jean. Among the guests announced for this Threauxdown are Paul Janeway from St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Big Freedia, and Marcus King.

“If I was visiting from out of town I wouldn’t go to the big theater shows because what makes New Orleans is the unique vibe in the bar and club scene,” says Mercurio. “Troy’s ‘Threauxdown’ is the only theater show I’d go to because he gets these great special guests — a cavalcade of stars — so it’s not a show you’ll ever see anywhere else. “

Andrews also hosts Shorty Fest at Tipitina’s on April 29, which, in addition to a concert featuring his band and Galactic offers a free outdoor “Cultural Block Party,” with performances by local brass bands and Mardi Gras Indians as well as food trucks.

Meanwhile, Neville has lined up at least dozen shows, at both theaters and clubs, beyond his official Jazz Fest gig. On April 29, he’ll join Soulive’s Eric Krasno and Anders Osborne for the first day of the NOLA Crawfish Festival, which runs outdoors at a club called The Broadside for three days between the Jazz Fest weekends.

“It’s a different little thing,” Neville says. “There’s jambalaya and crawfish and it starts in the afternoon and goes into the night. You can come get some crawfish and listen to music and then go back out.”

On the middle Wednesday, he’s bouncing to three different shows and on Saturday May 4 that FiyaPowa gig with Mercurio and Moore starts at 2 a.m. (which technically makes it May 5, but in New Olreans no one is counting). Neville will also take part in “Rejuvenation 50: A Celebration of the Meters,” at the Civic Theatre on May 2 sharing the stage with George Porter among others. Along the way he’ll also be jamming with everyone from Government Mule to Chuck Leavell, the keyboardist for the Allman Brothers and the Rolling Stones, to soul and gospel legend Irma Thomas to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Neville’s schedule is so busy that in the middle of our conversation he starts reorganizing his set lists on his phone and later he loses track of which gig is where.

“But I know I’ll be playing somewhere that day,” he says with a laugh. “You can look it up.”

Rabbi offers daily prayers, comfort to travelers leaving LAX for Israel

"It's a blessing. It's a big mitzvah," he said.

Marc Cota-Robles Image

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- As you can imagine, traveling to Israel right now can be a tense situation, but to offer a little comfort to those travelers, a local Rabbi is volunteering his time at LAX.

Rabbi Ari Liberow didn't travel far to reach Los Angeles' major airport.

"I run the Chabad of Westchester near the airport," he said.

He's been coming to the international terminal to volunteer daily since Oct. 7, conducting prayer services with passengers traveling to Israel.

"They want to take part and do something good before they get on," said Liberow. "It's amazing. It's a blessing. It's a big mitzvah."

One traveler hadn't done a prayer service like this before. As for his flight, Scott Loffman has no hesitation despite the ongoing conflict. He did admit he did his own prayer before arriving t the airport.

"I personally don't try to push my religion on anybody, but, you know, I think he has a good heart, and he's working hard, and he's helping people," said Loffman. "He's trying to help people improve their lives, and that's a good thing."

Rabbi Liberow said other airports like Miami and JFK in New York provide similar services and he's glad he's available for travelers in L.A. who need it.

"You know, we can have our differences. As the saying goes, 'Two Jews, three opinions,' but we're still family," he said. "We look out for each other, and people appreciate that."

The first 1,900 customers to use the promo code "April19" in the United app can redeem the airfare promotion for travel between Aug. 21 through Nov. 13, 2024.

The dates align with Swift's U.S. concert schedule to help Swifties planning to travel for her show.

"Let’s say after exploring Cornelia Street, Louis wants to travel from New York to Miami, Florida for a long weekend," a representative for the airline told ABC News in an emailed statement. "By using the code 'April19' in the United app, Louis can save more than $50 on a round trip ticket before August slips away. Of course, the total amount of the discount depends on the fare selected."

Swift's new album is already a massive hit with Spotify users, reportedly becoming the music platform's most streamed album in a single day in 2024 thus far, according to Billboard .

It’s My Work-Diapers Backpack-Tote

Portrait of Liza Corsillo

Most diaper bags are just tote bags or backpacks made of waterproof materials, with extra pockets to hold bottles, pacifiers, and baby snacks. (Some of the more elaborate ones have insulated storage and removable changing pads.) They are often bulky, and, in my experience, life as a parent is easier without one. I prefer a more streamlined multipurpose bag that I can use for work or travel or just everyday errand-running, in addition to baby outings. And the best one I’ve found so far is the surprisingly spacious and nice-looking LeSportsac Double Trouble backpack.

LeSportSac Double Trouble Backpack

My ideal diaper bag is lightweight and easy to carry, wipes clean and doesn’t show stains, looks good with everything I might wear, and is just as handy for carrying a laptop, water bottle , or wallet as it is for carrying baby stuff. The Double Trouble checks all of these boxes — plus, it can be used as a backpack or a tote. It has two tall pockets on the sides that work just as well for an adult water bottle as they do for a baby bottle. Inside, there are four elastic-trimmed mesh pockets that I use for everything from a computer charger to extra tampons and infant Motrin. There’s also a sneaky outer zipper pocket on the back and two smaller pockets (one zip, one not) on the front.

travel related days

Despite its French-sounding name, LeSportsac is an American company that was founded in 1974, was taken over (and given new life) by the son of the original founders in the early 1990s, and is now in the middle of another revival along with other popular brands of the ’90s and 2000s. This resurgence and the backpack’s trapezoidal shape make it feel subtly trendy — even Prada -adjacent — especially in the all-black nylon that I have (though it also comes in an ever-changing array of bright colors and playful prints). It has a ’90s mini-backpack vibe without being actually mini or overtly vintage-looking. I first became familiar with the brand in college when I worked part-time in a kids’-clothing store that carried some of the Hello Kitty and Tokidoki collaboration bags . Then, last year, LeSportsac sent me a few items to try in celebration of its upcoming 50th anniversary, and the Double Trouble was the sleeper hit.

Before the Double Trouble became my “diaper bag” of choice, I tried three other contenders: a leopard-print Colugo diaper tote , an all-black Caraa baby bag , and a Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole backpack , also in all black. All three are well-designed bags with practical details like removable looped straps for hanging on a stroller and insulated pockets for snacks or milk, and all three had great potential. But, ultimately, none of them fit my criteria for everyday (or even occasional) non-baby-related use and ended up in the back of my closet.

I put the Patagonia backpack — which is also popular among artists and art handlers — on my baby registry , thinking it would work well style-wise for both me and my husband. It’s lightweight and packable and can be hosed off in the event of a spill. But since it lacks structure, the lightness of the backpack and the depth of the main compartment are more frustrating than they are practical. No matter how thoughtfully I packed it, everything would disappear as if into a
black hole. I always had to use two hands and a hard surface to find anything — not great if you’re also holding a wriggly or fussy baby with a dirty diaper.

travel related days

The Caraa baby bag is the opposite, designed so you can find exactly what you need quickly. It’s all black on the outside, but the lining is cream-colored, so all your stuff is easy to see. It has three insulated outer pockets, two non-insulated magnetic sleeve pockets, a back zipper pocket that can fit a tablet or an iPad but not my MacBook Air, and a hidden zipper pocket for tucking away the optional shoulder straps. Inside, there are also four clear plastic slots and one elastic rimmed divider for organizing diapers . But the bag is bulky in a way that outs it as a diaper bag, and it can’t really double as a work bag since it can just barely hold my 13-inch laptop in the main compartment (and even then, the computer fits only without a protective sleeve ). The wealth of pockets, while useful, annoyingly causes me to carry more than I need.

The Colugo diaper tote is roomy and very attractive, with a handful of useful inner pockets and two small zipper pockets on the outside. It also has a removable cross-body shoulder strap. But I’ve found I like it better as a weekend bag, because it’s too big and heavy to use on a daily basis in New York City.

Where the Double Trouble beats them all is in its simple and ergonomic design. It’s comfortable to wear as a backpack despite a lack of extra padding or tactical-looking straps — the wide, woven nylon straps hug my shoulders gently as they evenly distribute the weight of whatever I am carrying. I can even wear it comfortably while carrying my son in a baby carrier , and the placement of the outer pockets makes it easy to reach around and grab my phone or a straw cup one-handed. When the subway car is crowded, it’s easy to switch to carrying it by the top handles as a tote. It fits in the storage bin of my compact Yoyo Stroller or in the basket of a Citibike. Best of all, it always makes my outfits look more sleek and put together, so much so that I chose to bring it with me instead of a purse on a recent trip to Japan and even got compliments on it from the salesperson at the Beams store in Kanazawa. It’s more than just a work bag, or a diaper bag, or an alternative to a purse for sightseeing, and I plan on carrying it long after my son is out of diapers and carrying his own backpack .
