How to Turn On Speedometer Info On Apple Maps: 3 Steps

travel speed iphone

Stuck trying to figure out how to turn on the speedometer info on Apple Maps?

Sadly, this is a known issue and can be super frustrating when it happens, especially when you want to avoid speeding fines.

Enabling the speedometer info can be often challenging without proper guidance. But, the good news is that you’ve come to the right place for answers.

The easiest way to turn on the speedometer info on Apple Maps is by tweaking your settings. But, if that doesn’t work, you’ll need to restart the app and make sure your phone is running on the latest iOS version.

Keep reading to solve the problem!

#1 Tweak Your Settings

Apple Maps offers multiple features that allow us to get directions, check the speed limit, avoid traffic, choose the most convenient route, and much more.

Sadly, hundreds of users have complained about not being able to use some of these features, such as the speedometer. Some of them have even downloaded a different navigation app.

I bet, you’re thinking of joining them, but before you do, please keep reading.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to turn on the speedometer info directly on the Apple Maps app, this is why you need to tweak your device’s settings.

Don’t worry, though. Doing this is very quick and simple, you’ll just need to:

  • Open the Settings menu and select “Maps”.
  • Go to “Directions” and choose “Driving” from the options.
  • Go to the “Show in navigation” section and turn on the switch next to “Speed Limit”.

How to turn on speedometer info on Apple Maps

Please note that the speed limit information is not available in all areas.

Then, go back to Apple Maps and make sure the driving mode is enabled by clicking on the car’s icon when selecting an address.

Enable driving mode on Apple Maps

You should be able to see the speedometer info without further trouble. But, if it isn’t showing up, chances are you need to restart the app.

Keep reading to learn how to do it.

#2 Restart Apple Maps

You may not know this, but Apple Maps needs to run thousands of processes in the back to show the speedometer info, give directions, and estimate traffic.

Unfortunately, sometimes coding bugs can make one or more of these processes crash, which can lead to experiencing difficulties while using Apple Maps, such as not being able to see the speedometer info, location issues , and much more.

But, don’t worry. The easiest way to restart any background process and get rid of temporary bugs is by force-stopping the app and relaunching it.

Follow these simple instructions to do it:

  • Go to the Home Screen and swipe up from the bottom of your screen and stop in the middle to open the App Switcher.
  • Swipe right or left to find Apple Maps. Then, swipe up on it.

Close Apple Maps

Once you’ve fully closed the platform, please relaunch it to check if you can see the speedometer info.

#3 Update Your Device

If you’re still unable to see the speedometer info, you might’ve missed an update.

Normally, this is something you shouldn’t worry about as there’s automatic updating. However, this feature will be disabled if you have a low battery percentage and the power-saving mode is turned on. Network issues and strict privacy settings can also interfere with this feature.

But, don’t worry. You can still manually update your device and get rid of the coding error that was causing the issue.

  • Open your phone’s Settings menu and tap on “General”.
  • Choose “Software Update” from the options. Your iPhone will start searching for a new iOS version.
  • If there’s an available update, tap on the “Download and Install” button and enter your passcode.

That about covers it! Hopefully, with the help of the fixes above, you’ll be able to turn on the speedometer info on Apple Maps.

If you take anything away, remember that tweaking your Settings may solve the issue. But, if that didn’t do the trick, don’t forget to restart the app to refresh any background processes and update your device.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this article. If you ever experience a different issue while using Apple Maps or other navigation platforms , please check out our site. You’ll learn multiple ways to solve it.

Have a great day!

The 7 Best Speedometer Apps for Android and iOS

Keep an eye on your speed while running, cycling, or driving with these top speedometer apps for Android and iPhone.

There might have been situations when you were running, cycling, or traveling, and you wanted to see how fast you were going.

Well, you don’t actually need a speedometer to measure your speed, as your smartphone can do this for you. There are some apps that you can install on your smartphone that use GPS to measure your speed based on the change in your location with time.

Here are the best speedometer apps for Android and iPhone.

Things to Note Before Getting Started

The apps listed below make use of your phone’s GPS and internet connection. You need to keep your GPS and mobile data enabled while using them, or else they wouldn’t work. As a result, these apps could drain your phone’s battery faster.

1. Google Maps

The first on this list is Google Maps, the most popular navigation app. The reason this app stands first on this list is its popularity—Google Maps has over two billion users worldwide, and if you are one of them, you do not need to install any separate app.

To check your speed, you first need to navigate somewhere by choosing your starting point and destination. The app will then show you the route to your destination along with your vehicle's speed. If there are some speed limitations in the area you’re driving, the app will notify you of the same.

There are lots of things you can do with Google Maps , but it misses some features that some other apps on this list offer, like an analog speedometer, HUD mode, etc. But, if you just want to view your speed, the app gets the work done.

2. GPS Speedometer

Contrary to its name, the app packs a bunch of extra tools, including a speedometer, an altimeter, and a sound meter. The sound meter measures your environmental noise in dB (decibels) by using your smartphone’s microphone, and the altimeter measures your altitude by using your smartphone’s GPS signals.

The app has an analog speedometer, a digital speedometer, and a map mode that shows your car’s live location on a satellite map, along with its speed. You can also use this app while traveling by train, as it counts maximum speed up to 500 miles per hour.

The app has a HUD mode, which you can use to reflect your speed, average speed, and distance on your vehicle’s windshield. There’s also a premium version of the app with no ads and some additional features like speed limit monitor and driving directions.

Download: GPS Speedometer for Android (Free, in-app purchases available)

3. Smart GPS Speedometer

This is one of the most feature-rich speedometer apps on this list. The app has two modes, driving, and cycling. The cycling mode reads your speed up to 60 miles per hour, and the driving mode can read up to 180 miles per hour.

The app has an analog speedometer. You can check your current speed, maximum speed, average speed, distance covered, moving time, and elapsed time. It comes with some additional features as well, that can come in handy while driving.

You can check the fuel prices in your area, or search for car dealers, taxi stands, parking, car repair, and washing services, etc. near you. Most of these features are locked, and you need to make in-app purchases to use them.

Download: Smart GPS Speedometer for iOS (Free, in-app purchases available)

Waze, by Google, is another popular navigation app on this list. It is a go-to app for many people to find directions while driving. Like Google Maps, Waze also has a speedometer option that displays the speed of your vehicle.

What isn't similar is that it isn’t necessary to start navigation from the app to view your vehicle's speed. You just need to open the app and your speed will be visible in the bottom left corner of the screen.

If you don’t see a speedometer after opening the app, you need to manually enable it. To do so, tap the Search button in the bottom left corner, and then tap the Settings icon in the top left corner. Now, under Driving preferences , tap Speedometer , and enable Show on map . You can also set your speed limit from here.

Download: Waze for Android | iOS (Free)

5. Speedometer∞

Speedometer∞ is a simple yet useful app that shows your speed, maximum speed, and average speed. You can also set a speed limit through the app, and it will notify you every time your speed exceeds that limit.

Like some other apps on the list, Speedometer has a HUD mode too. To enable it, you just need to tap anywhere on the screen. You can then project the app's content to your car's windshield.

The app supports gestures that let you change its brightness and color. Swiping left or right lets you change the color of the speedometer, and swiping up or down lets you adjust your screen’s brightness.

Download: Speedometer∞ for iOS (Free)

6. Speedometer PRO

Speedometer PRO is a popular speedometer app with over five million downloads on the Google Play Store. It shows you your speed, average speed, maximum speed, and distance covered.

Before starting your journey, you need to tap the Start Driving button and the app records some details like total time taken, distance covered, etc. The details of all your trips are saved under the History tab, and you can view them anytime.

Speedometer PRO also has a HUD mode that lets you mirror your display on your car’s windshield at night. You can enable a live mode widget that displays your speed on a small pop-up window, and use some other apps at the same time.

Download: Speedometer PRO for Android (Free)

Zpeed is not an app but a website that you can open on any web browser. If you do not use Google Maps and don’t want to install a separate app either, this could be the best option for you.

The website has a simple user interface and does not offer much functionality. It shows you your speed in numbers, with no option for an analog speedometer. You can choose a speed unit from meter per second, miles per hour, and kilometers per hour.

To use Zpeed, open any web browser and head over to zpeed.in . The website will ask for Location permission, so set it to allow. If the website fails to display your speed, check whether you’ve given Location permission to your web browser.

Your Smartphone Is Your Speedometer!

These were some of the best speedometer apps for smartphones. The accuracy of these apps depends on the GPS signals your smartphone receives, and they should work fine on most smartphones. The speeds might not always be 100 percent accurate, so we do not recommend using them for professional uses.

The addition of a speedometer in your navigation shows you how fast you're driving on the road.

Important:  Speedometers shown in the Google Maps app are for informational use only. Make sure to use your vehicles's speedometer to confirm your actual driving speed.

Get Speed Limit alerts

If the Speed Limits feature is available in your location, the speedometer in the app will let you know if you're driving too fast. The speed indicator will change colors if you go over the speed limit.

Hands-on: The best iOS features to upgrade your travel experience [Video]

Avatar for Fernando Silva

I was recently lucky enough to go on a great vacation where we spent eight days traveling across Europe. One of the things I noticed was just how helpful my iPhone was throughout this experience. Yes, we all know that we can use maps to help us navigate new cities and geographies. But did you know that you could convert currencies directly in the Notes or iMessage apps? Or that you could create a shared library so everyone on the trip can see all the pictures you took. I found over 25 iOS features that are specifically built into iOS to enhance and make your travels easier.

Check out our video below for a hands-on look and walkthrough of all the features mentioned!

Translation in iOS

Translation has to be one of the most important aspects of travel. We spent time in both Belgium and the Netherlands, and while there are many English-speaking people, it is great to quickly look up what certain words or phrases mean. Locals seem to appreciate that.

Now yes, Apple has created a dedicated iOS app called Translate that, by default, is on your phone. It’s extremely robust. It allows you to look up words and phrases quickly, you can use text or voice, and it even has a live conversational aspect to it. But the beauty of translation is that it is built in throughout all of your Apps in iOS

You can write out full paragraphs in iMessage and translate them to another language and send it off. You can take a picture of a sign and use Visual Look up to translate the text in your photos app and so much more. Watch our video above to see how it all works!

Currency & unit converters

Unless you are one of the few countries that uses the imperial system of measurement, you will need a unit converter to go from miles to kilometers, ounces to grams, or gallons to liters. Just like the translation app, there are currency and unit converters built right into you iPhone in most of its applications. For example, if someone sends you an iMessage to buy 2 kilograms worth of chicken, that unit of measure will be underlined. You can then long press it, and it will convert it to pounds and ounces right away so there is no discrepancy.

This is true of pretty much any unit of measure. Your iPhone can convert currencies in real time, it can convert temperature values and different units of measure as I mentioned. This works across all of your native Apple apps. You can use it in the Notes app, in iMessage, when taking a photo and so much more. This was a big save when I was ordering a steak at dinner and it was a grams!

Flight tracking

Similar to how the conversion works, you can also track flights in real-time in the same way. Now, this is very simple and gives you basic information. There are other apps like Flight Tracker and Flighty that allow you to create accounts, track the history of flights, and see airport data. But if you just want to get real-time info on when your plane is leaving, how far along the flight it is, and any delay information, all you need is your iPhone. If you are picking someone up from the airport, all they have to do is send you their flight number and, again, iMessage will underline that flight number and allow you to view the flight data and all the information needed!

Shared audio

Shared audio might have been our most used during the trip. My wife and I took two flights and seven trains during our travels. So to pass the time we wanted to watch movies or shows together on my iPad. Yes, we could have shared one AirPod each, and that would have been fine. But we both have a pair of AirPods Pro. This is where the Apple ecosystem magic comes into play. Apple products have a feature called Shared Audio, which does exactly what you think. It syncs audio to two different pairs of headsets where the audio source is coming from one device.

To set this up:

  • Bring the other person’s AirPods close to your device.
  • Open the Airpods Case
  • The iPhone will ask if you want to connect the other person’s AirPods
  • Boom, you are connected to someone else’s AirPods while being connected to yours as well

The other travel features

As I said, there are over 25 different iOS features that are built in to make your life easier when to comes to travel. Of course, other apps provide more features, but the ones that are built right into your phone are more than enough to help you get around a foreign country. From landmark visual look-ups to transit info in maps to shared notes to help keep itineraries between multiple people. Be sure to watch our video here to get a hands-on tutorial on how to get these features working for you!

What is your favorite iOS feature that no one talks about? Lets discuss in the comments below!

Construction begins on high-speed rail between Vegas and California

Brightline west will make the trip between las vegas and rancho cucamonga in a little over two hours.

Privately owned train company Brightline held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for a $12 billion high-speed rail project connecting Las Vegas and Southern California.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg joined company leaders and other officials for the start of construction in Las Vegas.

Brightline West benefits from $3 billion in federal funds from President Biden ’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Trains could be running as soon as early 2028, in time for the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Travelers have a lot to look forward to. Electric trains will depart every 45 minutes from a Las Vegas station south of the city’s storied Strip and a Southern California station in Rancho Cucamonga, a Los Angeles suburb about 40 miles east of downtown.

Traveling at up to 186 mph — faster than any other train in the United States — Brightline West trains will make the 218-mile trip in about 2 hours and 10 minutes.

“At long last, we’re building the first high-speed rail project in our nation’s history,” President Biden said of Brightline West in December. “We’ve been talking about this project for decades. Now we’re really getting it done.”

Other high-speed railroads that would carry passengers at 200 mph and faster are in the works in California, Texas and the Pacific Northwest.

“The bottom line here is we changed the trajectory,” Buttigieg said in an interview Monday. More than $30 billion from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has been awarded to date and more is on the way, he added.

The success of the Brightline West project could influence how future rail projects receive funding.

“It won’t be easy but I think they have all of the right things in place to get this done,” Buttigieg said.

Speed is Brightline West’s main selling point. Driving between Rancho Cucamonga and Las Vegas takes at least three hours without traffic, according to Google Maps.

“You’ll be sitting there flying by on Brightline looking at all these brake lights on the highway and thinking, ‘It sucks to be you,’” said Jim Mathews, CEO of the Rail Passengers Association , said on Friday. “That’s what it’s going to be like for all those people trying to get from greater Los Angeles to Las Vegas.”

Brightline West trains will run along Interstate 15 for nearly their entire journey. They will make two intermediate stops in California: one in Hesperia and one in Apple Valley.

Travelers coming from Los Angeles will have the option of riding Metrolink , Southern California’s regional rail system, to the Rancho Cucamonga station located near the junction of Interstates 10 and 15. The trip between downtown Los Angeles and Rancho Cucamonga takes at least 50 minutes by car without traffic, or 1 hour and 15 minutes on the train.

“Getting it to a juncture where pretty much everybody who passes into the I-15 corridor goes through is a massive benefit from a climate perspective, a congestion perspective, and an economic perspective,” Buttigieg said.

Future plans include a direct connection for Brightline West to Los Angeles Union Station as part of the separate California High-Speed Rail project.

Speed won’t be the only reason to ride Brightline West.

Brightline’s Florida operation connecting Miami to Orlando opened in September , giving future customers out West an idea of what to expect. Before Brightline’s debut, Amtrak held a monopoly on intercity passenger rail travel for decades.

Stations are spacious with comfortable areas to sit, bars selling craft cocktails and a lounge for premium passengers. Onboard, travelers enjoy assigned seats and fast WiFi. Attendants come down the aisle serving snacks and drinks throughout the trip.

Brightline told investors that it carried a record 258,307 passengers in March, and that one in three of its trains were nearly full.

Brightline’s strong ridership, though slower than initially promised to investors, makes a strong case for building fast and frequent trains between major U.S. cities such as Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Brightline West estimates that 6 million people will ride its trains during the first full year of operation, according to a federal environmental assessment . That number is projected to grow to as many as 9.2 million people within a decade.

The company estimates that, without the train, three-quarters of its riders would drive between Southern California and Las Vegas. Another 15 percent would fly, and the balance would not make the trip at all.
