While a significant number of airlines spent most of 2020 doing their very best not to refund monies that their customers were entitled to (the behavior of some airlines when it came to refunds was nothing short of despicable), some airlines chose to incentivize travelers not to request refunds by offering bonuses to those who accepted a travel voucher instead.

Qatar Airlines was one such airline (alongside the likes of Aer Lingus, American Airlines, and Etihad) and now it would seem that the bonus that Qatar Airways has been offering is set to become a permanent feature of the airline’s terms and conditions.

Since the end of March, Qatar Airways has been adding a 10% bonus to the value of the travel vouchers that it had been issuing, and just days before that policy was set to expire the airline has announced that it’s “ making the option to exchange tickets for a travel voucher with 10% additional value a permanent feature for all customers booking travel via qatarairways.com” .

In addition, the airline has also said that it will continue to offer passengers unlimited date changes and fee-free refunds for all tickets issued before 30 April 2021 for travel that’s due to be completed by 31 December 2021. That may not be quite as generous a policy as we’ve recently seen announced by the various US airlines (who have pledged to remove change fees permanently), but it’s more generous than the policies that are still in place at British Airways, Lufthansa, and Air France/KLM (for example).

When it comes to the 10% bonus on travel vouchers, the fact that the policy has been made permanent is good news for all travelers in the short-term but it will be interesting to see how this policy will work in practice once the pandemic is over.

I can’t imagine Qatar Airways offering a 10% bonus to passengers wishing to cancel a non-refundable fare once the world has returned to some kind of normality (that would be overly generous even by Qatar Airways standards) so, presumably, this new “permanent” policy will only apply to passengers wishing to cancel a flexible fare and who choose to take a voucher instead of a cash refund.

Qatar Airways A350 Business Class

Assuming I’m correct and that I haven’t missed something (let me know if I have!), that makes the new permanent policy useful for only a relatively small segment of Qatar Airways customers (most of us don’t book flexible fares). Still, that doesn’t mean that this isn’t good news. If you’re a frequent flyer with Qatar Airways and have booked a flexible fare that you need to cancel, a travel voucher with a 10% bonus may well be worth more to you than a straight cash refund. With Qatar Airways unlikely to go out of business anytime soon, I know that I’d take a travel voucher and a 10% bonus if I knew that I’d easily be able to use the voucher within its two year validity period.

What do you think about Qatar Airways making the 10% bonus on Travel Vouchers a permanent policy? Would you take a voucher if you were entitled to a cash refund?

Qatar Airways did a lot of damage to their reputation earlier this year by devaluing their vouchers for a large number of customers.

If you had ‘R’ class business flights booked you indeed got a refund voucher which added 10% value. But weeks later they removed advance seat selection and lounge access for business class passengers on these same fares.

The fare difference between the new ‘Classic’ and ‘Comfort’ fares can be more than £500 additional each way. I cannot now book a similar product using my vouchers for anywhere near the value of my original flights.

In my instance, the vouchers Qatar Airways issued are worth far less than their issued value.

Buyer beware on Qatar Airways vouchers. They did it once for this specific and popular fare type. No telling what Qatar Airways will do with future fare unbundling. Lower the miles earned on all fare types perhaps?

So the voucher can be used only in the same fare category?

No, what Michael is saying is that although he got the value of his fare back + 10% in the form of a voucher, Qatar Airways subsequently changed its fare rules to remove lounge access and seat selection from the cheaper business class fares (which he had originally booked) so he now cannot get the same benefits as he would have had on his original fare as they are now only available on more expensive fare bookings.

A voucher can be used towards any cash fare.

Free Re-booking, Refunds, Miles, Or Boosted Vouchers

Airlines have been in the habit lately of hiding refund rules and rights, when flights are cancelled. In an impressive move, Qatar Airways has an updated “Travel With Confidence” landing page, specifically stating refund rights in the event of a cancellation, but also offering good reason to let them hold onto the money for future travel.

Any unused tickets on the airline for travel up to December 31st, 2020 can be exchanged for a voucher, with a 10% boost on the amount. This includes newly purchased tickets for travel up until those dates. Qatar Airways lays out a variety of ways you can use your current ticket, or any new tickets, should plans change, including…

Holding on to your ticket

Keep your ticket and use it when you are ready with extended ticket validity, now valid for 2 years from the date of ticket issuance for greater flexibility.

This is great news for people who wish to travel on the same route, but would like to move to a later date. This is particularly useful for travel involving Asia and Pacific, where borders may not open in 2020.

Unlimited changes

“You can change your travel date or destination free of charge, as often as you need. You can change your origin to another city within the same country or any other destination we fly to within a 5000 mile radius of your original destination.”

Qatar Airways website currently notes a 5,000 mile radius and Qatar Airways has confirmed to GSTP that this is the correct figure, against all odds!

Keep in mind this only applies for new tickets, or tickets already issued for travel currently scheduled for before the end of 2020. The catch here is that the “totally free” changes only apply if you plan to travel by the end of 2020. If that’s not your plan, you’ll be subject to fare difference, in which case the 10% boost may help.

Swap for Qmiles

“Swap your ticket for Qmiles and redeem them towards reward flights, extra baggage or cabin upgrades when the time is right. For every 1 USD, you will earn 100 Qmiles that are valid for at least three years, so you can have the flexibility to choose how, when and for whom to redeem them. Not a member? Simply join before you submit your request.”

This basically means you can buy Qatar Airways miles at 1 cent per mile, so $1000 would buy 100,000 miles. The process is “irreversible” so only go this route if you have immediate plans to use QMiles, and know how to extract solid value.

Exchange for future travel

“You can exchange your ticket for a future travel voucher with 10% additional value. Vouchers are now valid for two years from the date of voucher issuance”.

This is an interesting proposition, which effectively gives you a 10% bonus on the fare value of a ticket, even if you immediately request it to become a voucher. It’s worth noting that the fare is often only a percentage of the total price, so don’t think you’ll be getting $1100 for a $1000 ticket, it’ll be somewhere in between.

The key here is that Qatar Airways takes in cash, and once you accept the 10% boosted voucher, it’s non refundable, so it’s attractive to both sides.

Refund your ticket

Rest assured, we will refund your ticket to the original form of payment if your flight gets cancelled.

It’s fantastic to see an airline acknowledge their duty and legally bound rights to refund passengers when flights are cancelled. Nobody wants to book travel if they think they’ll never be able to recover funds should things go sideways, and this is a big confidence boost.

Good Moves From Qatar Airways

The devil is in the details with these things, and while Qatar Airways policy is ultimately very, very friendly towards customers, there are elements which need greater clarification. If you have a booking with the airline, or are on the fence about making one, this is an extremely helpful new set of options, but you just may need to call and get some specific answers to see how much they can be put to use for you.

Here are a few travel trends we expect to see take off as the great travel reboot begins to take shape.

Not sure why more airlines are not doing this instead of illegally holding passengers’ money without paying any interest charge (and begging governments that they are in a desperate situation, as if the passengers are not…)

I also do not clearly understand what the terms are because the language is confusing as you note. Could you update it if you hear from them? The main issue with the same country is that it puts many small countries in disadvantage, like many small european countries where there is only one international airport but countries like China and US would benefit it from this a lot. So distance measure sounds more reasonable, or they could say, closest 5 airports that Qatar Air serves or something like that. But it would be a nice deal if it is actually 5000miles. But 500 miles is too short for many airports…

Thanks for posting this, I was reading about it last night. As an example, if I wanted to book a ticket for Christmas, Europe to Australia mid Dec to return mid Jan, does this cover me should I want to change the ticket if Australia still has the 14 day quarantine period in December? Can I book now whilst the ticket is still relatively reasonable and does this mean I can hold the ticket and use it a few months later? Thanks – Nick

The requirements seems to be travel in 2020 – so pushing into Jan is not possible. I was wondering that myself as i have a GOT>DOH>PER>DOH>ARN booked for xmas (returning 2 Jan) and i wanted to start my journey in london and fly back out of syd instead of per – but the rules says 2020 travel only. I may give Qatar a call – but as im still waiting for my march trip to be refunded im a bit p!ssed off with them at the moment…

Correct, as to destination to my understanding and the underlying document

Without paying the fare difference?

  • Pingback: DEAL: Qatar lässt bei Umbuchungen das Ziel um 5000 Meilen erweitern! | You Have Been Upgraded

Rerouting is possible free of charge on Qatar Airways operated flights only from the same country of origin and/or within 5000 (five thousand) miles radius from the original destination booked.

So, changing the origin from ARN to LON should not be possible (not same country)

Please beware. I booked a flight and tried changing the date by just a week. The US hotline quoted me a big fare difference and even the supervisor told me that the only fee they are waiving is the “change fee”.. Fare difference is only waived if your original flight was cancelled by Qatar Airways. If the agents don’t enforce the “generous” rules, they are absolutely useless..

Basically the exact opposite of the British Airways contemptuous treatment of their customers on every point! I hope people remember when making future bookings #FlyAbBA

Qatar Airways Introduces An Offer Better Than Sticking It To Customers On Refunds

by Gary Leff on March 24, 2020

With several airlines refusing to honor refunds for cancelled flights , and in the process appearing to break the laws of the U.S. and also of the E.U., Qatar is offering something a little bit more innovative.

Airlines are worried about surviving. They have your cash. It may not be legal to keep it when flights are cancelled, but most customers will take what they are offered (future travel credit) and very few will complain to authorities.

They’re simply not worried about government fines or a class action lawsuit if they survive . That’s all in the future, and right now they are worried about making it through to that future. So carriers like Lufthansa and JetBlue are giving themselves a risky interest free loan with customer cash.

Qatar Airways though has a better approach. They, too, want your cash. They want your future travel purchases when travel is again in the cards. They are honoring refunds but if you’ll take a credit instead they’ll give you a 10% bonus for taking a voucher . That’s creative and honors the customer.

“Qatar Airways has amended its ‘Travel with Confidence’ and flight disruption policies to give customers even more flexibility. Customers who choose to receive a travel voucher for future use will receive the full unutilized value of their ticket plus an additional 10% of the fare cost as an added value offer. Customers also have the option for a refund back to the form of payment they used when purchasing their tickets – the administration of this refund will take up to 30 days to process. Vouchers for future travel continue to be the most expedient way of helping customers while we manage the backlog.

travel voucher with 10 additional value

Hopefully working with them to take advantage will turn out to be straightforward. For most people I’d recommend still taking the cash – I’d need more than a 10% bonus to give a loan even to an airline I expect to still be flying. Nonetheless it’s exactly the kind of thinking airlines should be using since it doesn’t just respect the customers they’ll need later, it creates an incentive for future business too.

[…] And why not? They need your cash now and you may be inclined to use the credit later. If not, take your refund. It will certainly add to their kitty. (HT: VFTW) […]

Didn’t Aer Lingus do the same?

@ Gary — Maybe there is hope. Now, can we get a new President?

been tried to contact QR for over a week about my booking which was cancelled and changed by QR to another flight with 33 hours layover . We obviously in lockdown can’t travel flight departing tomorrow still no response from QR , phone lines not operative terrible at least6 BA have a operative line for travellers withing 72 hours , QR is a 5 star in the air but not on the Ground

Wizzair also offering 120% voucher. Also can convert it to a cash refund for 100%. Better than Lufthansa and KLM/AF who are going to come out of this with very upset customers.

Just checked Qatar Airways website and I do not see this information anywhere. Please note below message on Qatar Airways website: ” If you have booked your ticket on qatarairways.com or through any of our offices, you can re-book your tickets or exchange your ticket for a future travel voucher by telephoning any of our offices or contact centres. If your flight is operating normally and you have booked or are planning to book tickets for travel up to 30 September 2020, but you wish to change your travel plans, you can alter your travel date free of charge, or exchange your ticket for a future travel voucher valid for one year, up to 3 days prior to departure. This includes award flights.”

It was posted by a QR rep on FlyerTalk, however as you say website not updated to reflect and also contradicts the information they’ve given to TA’s through their trade site too.

My return tickets from Ahmedabad to Philadelphia on March 28th can I get refund

I have Qatar flight tickets but STA my travel agent refuses to to give me a cash refund. They say that the Qatar proposition for cash refund does not apply to them. All I managed to get from them is an email telling me that my tickets have been cancelled and Qatar will give me a credit, only for the value of the tickets, no extra 10: percent, and that I have till February 2021 to book new flights. I am not very pleased with Qatar as they tell people that they are entitled to a cash refund but they don’t honorable it. In fact I am extra disappointed as I have been a regular customer of Qatar, normally my wife an I been taking two flights per year with them. Certainly I will consider other airlines in the future.

Due to fly from Perth to Doha then manchester 1April can I change flight

Kenya Airways is offering Kenyans free tickets on their New York Nairobi sector. This is the official airline for Africa.

Qatar Airways you are doing good job in critical situations. No Doubt you are no#1.

What about those who were foreseeing the problem earlier and got their bookings changed for an early date.I got my booking changed for a week earlier to Karachi. If I wud have waited another week wid have been in a very problem

The problem with vouchers is it’s only valid for 1 year. Under these circumstances you’ll be lucky to use the voucher on any flight before June. So they should also extend the expiration of the voucher as flights may be disrupted for the next 6-12 months anyway. The extension to the voucher also needs to apply. I just requested a refund instead.

This is not true. My flight was cancelled and they sent me first the voucher and then an email saying that the flight to US was cancelled. When I asked for a refund the Singapore Qatar office sent me an email saying that they have sent the vouchers so no refund. This is absurd I never asked for a voucher.

American offered a 20% bonus for accepting a voucher on 3/24/20. Assuming they’re around to honor, it seemed like a good deal.

I cancelled my business class ticket for travel date 23 March on the 12 of March .. having tried all possible ways to get in touch before the total closer ,was holding the line for hours together .. there is no communication from Qatar as to when they will refund my money . Went to the local office before the bandh… the doors were locked. ,what am I supposed to do …hope I get my money back ..

We have booked on Qatar Airways from Singapore to Greece/ Dubrovnik/ Singapore. Will we get vouchers?

DON’T TRUST THEM… Qatar Airways hacked my account and change what I had choose “Refund” to Acknowledge . This is happened After I contact them and they told me we are going to give you full refund..

Am not able to contact them Phone isn’t being answered and emails not returned

I have sent them an e mail for a refund. I only recived an automatic reply e mail.

Still no money recived. It’s been over 3 weeks.

Then I sent them another message on they website asking them for a travel voucher or refund. Not recived any reply.

Charles Abdulrazak.

With Qatar vouchers, Does anyone know for certain what the ‘valid from date of issue’ statement means? Does it mean:

1 travel must commence/finish within 12 months; or

2 voucher must be ‘activated’ within 12 months but travel can be later

April 10 11.5am my flight they are changing for a flight I can take full refund or changes to any other month??

I had a QR flight for the 9th April but had to change to 26th March from Sydney to Paris., After 12 phone calls, compliant at Sydney and Doha, had to pay for another ticket with no refund. Although website said you can change, cancel, or refund voucher it seems not always so. Still glad to return but getting money back from QR is not their strong point.

I requested refund and they gave me voucher which i can’t use in one year! Very Bad Service by qatar didn’t expect. If i call them even after waiting in line 1hr no body picks my call .

The airlines are continuing to trade, yet not obiding by the regulations. Where are the governments? Where is the rule of law?

Hello Please regarding the new Qatar policy there version on the website varies very much from your article. Can you point me to the part on their website where you got your info. KIND regards Paul.

I cancelled my booking for two Business Class return flights from Sydney to Europe, around A$15,000 for both, which I made via the Qatar website, which means I am entitled to a full refund. I am now into week 9 awaiting my refund. I have received the following advice – “If you have requested your refund at least 72 hours (which I well and truly have) before your scheduled flight departure, your refund will be accepted. It may take up to eight weeks to get the money back into your bank account or card depending on who you bank with.” Wouldn’t you think that they would be trying to placate business class clientele for future business???? Appalling treatment and they should be avoided at all (substantial??) cost!

This article is way outdated.

Qatar isn’t an airline worth of being considered reputable, in any way. Good luck to anyone buying a flight with them… They have no scruples. I wish they were bankrupt, or grounded like many other airlines. It will be a more dignified position, and one that would not cause so much grief to many people around the world.

Qatar has publicly admitted to selling business tickets for A$10-13k, and bumping economy passengers off their flights. The airline justifies it as a move trying to keep financial in difficult times, and that passengers are being considered on a case-by case basis. Utter lies, as their contact phones in Qatar, the US, the UK, Australia and Brazil are either silent or calls simply don’t get through, and they don’t answer emails. I’ve just tried to write to them again, the website logs me off before I can finish writing, and requests authentication by a code they don’t send to my email.

I have bought a ticket Sydney-Sao Paulo, for return on 27/7/2020, and have had my flight cancelled on me twice, so far causing me a 5 week delay. If I’m lucky to get on the flight scheduled, it will be a 5 week delay, and considering the 2 extra weeks I’ll be in quarantine in Sydney, that will total of 7 weeks not working, with no holiday pay to make up for. In the current scenario, the company I work for is not doing great, and will soon start laying off people. If I’m not there, despite my work performance, it will be hard for them to keep me, and let go of a peer of mine. At the moment I’m bleeding my savings, then I’ll lose my job.

But, like the American saying, “in times of crisis, some people cry, some people sell handkerchiefs”. Shame on Qatar.

Yes, you can still redeem your travel vouchers. Here's how to do it.

The travel credit you got after the pandemic is probably about to expire. Actually, it may have already run out.

A recent American Express survey says one in three travelers plan to burn their travel credits or points to pay for all or part of a trip. Why? They have a lot of travel credits to use. After the pandemic started, airlines, cruise lines and hotels doled out points and vouchers in such generous quantities that it put the CARES Act to shame.

"The airlines are sitting on more than $10 billion in unused travel credits, most of which expire in two years or less," says Lauren LaBar, a manager at Upaway , a travel concierge app.

But you don't have to lose your travel credit. Here are a few expert tips that will help you keep your credits and travel in the future. And there are ways of ensuring this never becomes a problem again.

Read your voucher now

If you've received a voucher, flight credit or travel certificate, find it and read it now. Cruise lines are particularly strict about their vouchers, called future cruise credits.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

“You have to know the value of your credit," says Annie Scrivanich , senior vice president at Cruise Specialists . "Also, know the terms and conditions like the expiration date and book-by date."

She warns that cruise lines aren't flexible in changing the terms, so she recommends rebooking sooner rather than later.

Track your credit

Many travel companies won't tell you if your credit is about to expire. Of course not. They want to keep your money. Don't let that happen to you, says Jeremy Ellis, head of customer care operations at Priceline .

"Keep track of your credit – and its expiration date – by flagging it in your email as soon as it hits your inbox and setting a reminder on your calendar to rebook before the deadline," he advises.

The date by which you must use your ticket should be on the cancellation confirmation of the original ticket. Also, note that there's sometimes a difference between when you have to book by and when you have to travel by.

Go back to the place you booked

If you bought your tickets or hotel room through a third party, like an online travel agency, you'll want to check with them. An agency can help, but they also add a layer of complexity – and sometimes, more restrictions. You'll want to check with the place you booked to see about your options for redeeming the voucher or credit.

If you're lucky, you bought your trip through a reputable travel advisor who can help you make the most of your credit (and possibly even extend it). If not, then you might have to deal with an automated system that is programmed to tell you "no" at every turn.

Either way, you have to start here, say experts.

How to make sense of credits

It can be confusing. Consider what happened to Tom Harriman, an attorney based in Clarksville, Maryland. He had $750 in American Airlines flight credits that were about to expire. But he couldn't redeem the scrip online because of a technical glitch.

Harriman phoned American and asked for help. A representative came up with a creative solution: She used part of his flight credits to book two new tickets, and she modified the remaining balance into travel credits, which he could use for a future trip up to a year after the date of the re-issue. It turns out American has travel credits and flight credits, each with its own rules.

"This is all crazy," he added.

It is. Airline credits are particularly confusing. For example, Delta Air Lines offered eCredits, which operate a lot like American's vouchers. United has electronic travel certificates. Each one comes with a set of restrictions that you'll need to review.

Don't assume your airline will warn you before they expire. I've received lots of complaints on my nonprofit consumer advocacy site where passengers discovered only too late that time had run out on their vouchers.

Call to redeem your credits

If you want to redeem your travel vouchers, get a real person on the phone. That's the advice of veteran financial advisor Michael Foguth .

"The best thing to do is call and communicate with a live person in the company’s customer service department," he says. "A live representative can typically give you tips and ideas on how to utilize all of your available credits. If your rewards are expired or close to it, the representative can often extend the expiration dates."

Note that some companies may charge you to talk to a human, so ask before you do anything.

With dangerous COVID variants still out there, and travel plans still in flux, it's more important than ever to track your travel vouchers. The ones you have could expire soon. And if you don't act now, they probably will.

Don't let vouchers become a problem again

Travel companies love to hand out expiring vouchers. They know only a small percentage of customers will redeem them, meaning that they get to keep your hard-earned money. Here's how to ensure that doesn't become a problem for you.

If they cancel, you deserve a full refund. In virtually every sector of the travel industry that's the rule. For airlines, it's a federal rule . In other cases, state law protects you from purchases made but not delivered.

You get what you negotiate. Experts say there's still lots of room for negotiation if you have to cancel or postpone your next trip. So if a company offers you a credit, be sure to request a refund. Phone reps often have some flexibility in granting a refund as a one-time exception. Always ask for your money back first.

There ought to be a law. Ideally, travel credit – like the money used to purchase it – should never expire. Consumer advocates such as Travelers United are pushing to ensure future airline vouchers don't expire. There's talk that the airlines might be on board with the idea.

Why an Airline Voucher Is Sometimes Better Than a Cash Refund

Over the past couple of months, many of us have learned about the ins and out of canceling flights . Phrases like cancel-for-any-reason insurance and airline voucher are now part of every traveler's vernacular, and we've all found inventive ways to reach airline customer service representatives.

It's also become second nature to demand that cash refund when canceling flights —and to firmly say no to the travel vouchers most airlines are offering. But should you ever consider taking that airline voucher over cash? Some experts say yes, but warn there are things to keep in mind when you do. Below, we walk you through the nuances of vouchers—the good, the bad, and the potentially negotiable—so you can make the best move next time you cancel a flight.

The case for getting your refund in cash

There are some obvious reasons to take cash over a voucher. Most of us like our money where we can see it, and it's hard to justify letting an airline hang onto your money—especially when it looks like we won't be flying any time soon . "From a high level, cash is better than a voucher because you can't pay for groceries with an American Airlines gift card," says Scott Keyes of Scott's Cheap Flights . "If you had a $500 ticket, and they’re offering a $500 cash or voucher, cash is way superior because it’s fluid, and it doesn’t have an expiration date."

Jesse Neugarten of Dollar Flight Club is team voucher, but he agrees there are certain situations in which to push for your money back. "If you’re low on cash and don’t plan to travel anytime in 2020 or 2021, more cash on hand may be the best bet for you," says Neugarten. "Plus, some airlines, like Virgin Australia and smaller carriers, are shutting down, and they may not be able to honor vouchers in the future." If you bought a ticket from an online travel agent like Expedia, Travelocity, or Orbitz, then you absolutely want your cash back as well, Neugarten says, and not a gift card or voucher you have no reason to use.

If you end up needing to cancel and rebook a second time, travel vouchers can cause issues with insurance , too. "If you’re buying travel insurance, we’ve been telling people not to take the voucher and to get a refund," says Megan Moncrief, the chief marketing officer at insurance comparison website Squaremouth . "Historically, travel insurance providers widely grouped travel vouchers with points and miles , as award-based travel, which is typically uninsurable as there is no direct dollar amount associated with [the vouchers]." In laymen's terms: If you book a flight with a voucher and have to cancel, your flight cost in an insurance claim would technically be zero, meaning you wouldn't get any of that money back. Moncrief says that some providers are now changing their stance given the current situation, but it's important to keep this in mind when purchasing travel insurance—something most of us are doing these days—and make sure to understand the coverage offered on award-based trips.

The case for taking the travel voucher

All that being said, there are times when it makes more sense to take a voucher—namely, when the airline is willing to offer you a credit of a higher value. "What the smart airlines are doing is offering an incentive to take the voucher," says Keyes. "They might say you can take a $500 cash refund or a $600 travel credit [for your $500 flight], and that's when it starts getting interesting."

Neugarten says his Dollar Flight Club customers have reported the same. " American Airlines and Delta have been offering 10 to 20 percent bonus vouchers to those who elect to keep a credit with the airline, rather than take a refund," says Neugarten. "These airlines are not advertising that yet, but they are offering this over the phone to select customers on a case-by-case basis, or to those who ask for it." Few airlines, like Qatar Airways and Finnair, have formalized such offers, telling customers that all vouchers will receive 10 percent increases from the original flight prices.

"I think this poses a great opportunity for travelers to get additional value from their ticket by simply and persistently asking airline agents for these bonus vouchers," adds Neugarten. "Though these bonus vouchers have been offered at random, some people have simply asked for them." And if you're wondering how to do the dance? Neugarten says they've found a script that has worked. They make sure to thank the agent, mention they've heard of other people taking these vouchers, and use these golden words: "I would prefer to keep my ticket if you would be willing to give me a bonus voucher. Does [insert airline name] have the ability to offer this? If not, I’d happily take the refund." Given that airlines are legally required to offer cash refunds for canceled flights, it's well-worth asking—you'll either walk away with the cash you're owed, or a higher value voucher.

"Passengers are in much more of a position of strength than they normally are," says Keyes. "I haven’t heard of a passenger successfully negotiating a higher voucher, but it wouldn’t shock me if some airlines are in a position to do that. They need cash: They have so few incoming bookings and so many cancellations, so anytime they can hang on to a passenger's money because that passenger agreed to take a credit instead of a refund, it's worth trying."

Whenever you take a voucher, read the fine print

If we've learned anything during our coronavirus cancellations , it's to always, always read the fine print. And even when the voucher pot is, as Keyes says, being sweetened, make sure you understand the restrictions of a voucher before pouncing on it. "I’d look at two things," says Keyes. "The deadline or expiration date can be problematic for a lot of them." If a voucher expires, say, at the end of the year, it leads to a bigger question: Do you anticipate traveling by then? Is it even possible for you to use this credit?

"Secondly, who can use the voucher?" says Keyes. "Usually you can use [a voucher] to buy a ticket for anyone—a kid, a spouse, whomever—but sometimes the voucher is only eligible for the person who received it. That's another instance when a voucher becomes level valuable than cash." Keyes also suggests considering the airline offering the voucher, how frequently you fly it, and if the voucher works on partner airlines.

Vouchers are always better than miles

Last but not least, Keyes cautions that you should understand what type of travel credit you're getting—and be wary of accepting miles or points instead of a typical voucher. "There's a difference between a voucher and frequent flier miles," says Keyes. Some airlines, he warns, have been sending customers tempting deals to accept miles as refunds, or to convert vouchers into miles. But miles are even less tangible than vouchers and harder to use to your advantage. "When you purchase a flight with a voucher, it’s like purchasing with cash: You get the same status, and importantly, you earn miles," says Keyes. The same can't be said for flights purchased with miles. The only real benefit to miles as a form of refund, for the average traveler, is that they sometimes have a further out expiration date, but at that point, you're probably safest asking for your money back.

What Should I Choose For My 2024 Delta Choice Benefit?

I requalified for Delta Platinum Medallion status last week. One of the best parts of Platinum and Diamond Medallion are the Choice Benefits that members can choose when they reach these levels.

Per Delta.com:

2024 Medallion Year: You may select one benefit when you qualify for Platinum Medallion Status; you may select three benefits when you qualify for Diamond Medallion Status. Selection opens immediately after you earn Status, and benefits must be selected by January 31, 2025. “

When you attain Platinum Medallion, you can choose one benefit from the following list:

  • 4 Regional Upgrade Certificates (I chose this one last year)
  • $200 American Express Statement Credit
  • 4,000 Starbucks® Rewards Stars
  • 500 Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs)
  • Give Silver Medallion status to two people
  • 20,000 bonus miles
  • $400 Delta Vacations® Experience (Flight + Hotel)
  • $250 Sustainable Aviation Fuel Contribution
  • $250 Delta Travel Voucher

Delta Planes

I know right away that there are several benefits that I will not be choosing. The $200 American Express statement credit is fine, but not the best value. I also won’t be choosing the Starbucks® Rewards Stars. 4,000 stars equals 20 beverages. Other benefits have a higher value. I don’t need the MQDs, so scratch that one. Silver Medallion has little value and I’m not burning my Choice Benefit there. 20,000 bonus miles are also fine, but I have enough miles that I don’t need to pad my balance. I’ll also skip the $400 Delta Vacations® experience and $250 Sustainable Aviation Fuel contribution.

This means that I’ve narrowed it down to either the Regional Upgrades or the $250 Delta travel voucher. The voucher would be used almost instantly. I always book First/Business Class tickets, but could buy Economy and upgrade if space is available at booking. I’m not sure which to choose this year. I’m pushing to Diamond Medallion and will likely choose the $500 Delta Travel Voucher (the amount is higher for Diamonds).

Anthony’s Take: I’m on the fence between the Regional Upgrades and Delta Travel Voucher. Which would you choose and why?

Canceled flight? How to understand and use a British Airways Future Travel Voucher

Ben Smithson

If you've canceled upcoming travel booked through British Airways because of coronavirus and its associated travel restrictions, you may have received a credit voucher for the amount you originally spent, which BA calls a Future Travel Voucher. It's important to note that if BA canceled your flight, rather than you doing the canceling, you are legally entitled to a refund rather than a voucher. However, if you did the canceling, you'll likely be given one of these vouchers for future travel.

We've had a number of confused readers contact us about how to both understand what they have received and how to use it.

We spoke to British Airways about this and here are some tips.

Related: Rebooking, voucher or refund? What's your best option for upcoming British Airways flights?

How do I find my Future Travel Voucher?

Vouchers are sent to customers by email only to the address associated with the canceled booking. A different voucher will be issued for each passenger (to the lead email address), so if you are canceling a booking for two passengers you should receive two vouchers.

These vouchers are not displayed in your Executive Club account , so BA has advised us that the only way to find your vouchers is to check your emails. If you're having trouble locating your voucher, try searching 'Future Travel Vouchers'.

This is a frustrating situation, as it means some travelers may forget they even have a voucher if it's buried among hundreds of British Airways promotional emails.

If you have canceled multiple bookings, you will have multiple different vouchers — I already have six. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to collate them. You might want to consider entering the details into a password-protected spreadsheet or shared document for ease of reference.

What information can I find on my Future Travel Voucher?

About the only useful information in the voucher email is the voucher number, which begins with 125, followed by 10 unique digits (i.e. 125-1234567890). The email with your voucher does not show the value of the voucher or the expiration date. It does show the original booking reference number (PNR) that the voucher represents.

Once you're ready to redeem the voucher, you'll have to call BA to do so — which, at this time, is not advisable given long hold times. You'll have 12 months to use the voucher from the date of the first flight in your original booking.

travel voucher with 10 additional value

How much is my voucher worth?

British Airways has advised us that the only two ways to determine the value of your Future Travel Voucher are to:

  • Look up the value of your original booking it relates to, using the PNR in the voucher email. The voucher value is for the same amount; or
  • Call British Airways to ask.

If you are creating a spreadsheet for your voucher details, include the value of each voucher as you calculate it. You cannot look up the value online aside from entering the PNR from the original booking, and the information is also not included in the email with the voucher number.

Related: When is it time to call your airline?

How do I use my voucher?

You can only use your Future Travel Voucher by calling British Airways.

Expect long wait times if you are calling anytime soon, as thousands of other passengers cancel and defer their upcoming travel. You can also use multiple vouchers per new booking if the new booking costs more than the value of the voucher. If your new booking does not use up all the value of the Future Travel Voucher you are using, just to add an extra layer of complexity, you cannot use that voucher for other bookings — a new voucher will be emailed to you for the remaining amount.

What can I use my voucher for?

Your voucher can be used to travel to any destination in the British Airways network including partner airlines, as long as it's a British Airways-marketed route with a BA flight number. It can also be used on a British Airways Holiday.

Related: What are codeshare flights and how do they work?

When does my voucher expire?

Unlike a Companion Voucher that shows up in your Executive Club with a clear expiration date, you have to work out the expiration date of your Future Travel Voucher by looking up your original booking using the PNR in the voucher email. The voucher expires 12 months after the departure date of your original booking. And like with a Companion Voucher you must book and travel before the expiration date.

I would recommend setting calendar reminders for the date that is three months before the expiration date of the voucher, and then another reminder for two months before so you don't forget to book and travel before it expires.

What happens to my canceled award bookings?

In line with British Airways' Book With Confidence policy, award bookings made with Avios can be canceled for no fee, just like cash bookings. If you cancel a redemption booking without paying a cancellation fee you will receive the fees, taxes and surcharges you paid when making the redemption as a Future Travel Voucher, as well as the Avios back into your Executive Club account.

However, you can ordinarily cancel a redemption booking for a $44 per person cancellation fee and receive the fees, taxes and surcharges refunded back onto the card you used to pay for them originally. That has not changed . If you pay the cancellation fee, you can receive a refund back onto your card. If you instead want to avoid paying a cancellation fee you will receive this amount as a Future Travel Voucher.

Bottom line

I appreciate British Airways had to very quickly develop a system to allow thousands — if not millions — of bookings to be canceled as its IT systems and staff are swamped with unprecedented changes to how the airline operates. That being said, the current Future Travel Voucher system as it stands now is incredibly customer unfriendly. Between looking through your inbox for the voucher, having to look up the value of it, remembering the expiration date and having to call the airline to use it, there's a lot of room for error in letting these vouchers go to waste.

If you have been issued more than one voucher, I would recommend creating some sort of spreadsheet document and set calendar reminders to piece together the critical information. That way, you can ensure you get all of the value out of each voucher you're given.

Qatar 'refundable voucher' ad vs. fare rules

By sallecc April 15, 2021 in Thailand Travel Forum

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm planning to buy BKK-DOH-Belgrade for my parents end of April, with free date change option, which Qatar has (or not?)... When I'm choosing the flights on Qatar app, in 1st step summary of each flight option it says "Refundable as voucher with 10% additional value", cool... But, after I actually choose that flight, in next step in it's "Fare rules" there's no any mention of it, only: "Changes = Not applicable (See reissue conditions)" and "Reissue = Allowed with restrictions", and "Refund = Not Allowed"... No any mention of previously said "Refundable as a voucher"... should it be there in Fare Rules? I just worry if I buy it, and later I want to refund for a voucher and change the date, they might say "Sorry, not allowed as it's stated in your Fare Rules"...? Hope somebody is more clear about this, thanks! ????

IMO, you should only buy tickets when the travel plans are 99.5% firm, and the price is acceptable.

There are three Economy fare buckets, Classic, Conveninece, Comfort. They all have different rules.

My read, asssuming you meet the current ticket/travel by dates:

You can make changes, these involve a re-issue.

A re-issue may result in a fare increase, if the original fare bucket is no longer available. There is no "fee" though.

I think the published rules, which you see when you see in a booking, are standardized.

I think the COVID "benefits" supercede, assuming you meet the ticket by/travel by dates.

I'm not certain that 10% Voucher Bonus is still in place; it could be I just can't find any confirmation.

You can check with Qatar Airways; they are responsive.

No matter where the year takes you, we have you covered with guaranteed flexibility throughout 2021.*

*Terms and conditions Valid for tickets issued on/before 30 April 2021. Valid for any Qatar Airways’ tickets purchased either directly from Qatar Airways or through travel agents. If you have booked your ticket through a travel agent, please contact your travel agent. Although still referred to on their website, "Travel with Confidence" was replaced by "Extending our Commitment" in October last year.  This in turn has had a few changes since then but the agents latest version can be found here, and there is no longer a 10% bonus offer.

https://www.qatarairways.com/content/dam/tradepartners/pdf-files/Extending Our Commitment v2.5 - Trade.pdf

Be aware though that Qatar are of the opinion that this is not part of your contract with them and changes down the line will be assessed under the latest/current version of this document which may not be as good as it is now.

Check you're using the latest version of the app, or use the website instead, as you shouldn't be seeing the 10% extra any more IIRC.

Look you guys are reading on what’s website but im going to write to you what’s in reality as during last 6 months I used Qatar airways In 12 sectors . Yes you can change the date of ticket but there may be a difference of fare on the date of travel ( usually they will find a difference) so you will end up paying . No doubt their aircraft and service onboard is good rest is as bad as it can get .especially in Doha  The transit facility in DOH simply no comments , the staffs working the Asians mostly treat you like they are doing you a huge favor by serving . Zero facility. Fare wise Qatar Airways is the most expensive especially in business class with limited luggage to Cary on . Extra Luggauge charge are unrealistically high .  Try to chose another carrier if you can they are more flexible and most of the tickets with Emirates , Etihad also comes with free COVID insurance till31 days of arrival to your destination and flexible on luggage policy and date change free of charge no questions asked

Last year my wife had a ticket to Europe with Qatar but their flights were then suspended. They offered to re-book but always no flights. KLM were still flying so flew with them and cancelled Qatar. Qatar head office refused any refund, it was a cheap ticket. Contacted Qatar in Europe and full refund issued.

I received a message from EMIRATES about the not used return-flight I had booked for my lady and myself (BKK - Dubai - Brussels on May 1, 2020 and return on 3 June, 2020).  Emirates had cancelled the Dubai - Brussels flight due to covid at that moment.  When I enquired about a refund in April 2020, Emirates told me I could either request a refund or use that same reservation-number as it would be valid for 12 months for same itinerary without any extra cost.   Obviously I did choose for the latter, but that expiry date was approaching so I enquired again, and EMIRATES has extended the validity of those tickets to THREE years.  Perfect service, as the ticket-prices would be considerably higher now.  So I now have still more than 2 years to decide when to use that return ticket.

Note that Emirates also provides FREE covid-19 insurance included in the ticket-price.  For a one-way flight it is valid for 30 days (so not sufficient to cover the required permission to stay period), but for a return-flight the full period of your booked trip is covered.  Best to book a flexible return-ticket so that you would be able to use that return-leg ticket at a time convenient for you.

A quick review of the CURRENT EK policies, for newly issued tickets (from 1 April 2021), seems to indicate a few advanatges over QR...

And, for the OP, they do fly DBX-BEG.

https://www.emirates.com/english/help/covid-19/ticket-options/

Tickets booked from 1 April 2021

All tickets issued from 1 April 2021 will be automatically valid for travel for 24 months.

Within that time, you have the flexibility to change the dates and ask for a refund at no extra charge. You can make the changes online through Manage A Booking or call your travel agent.

Do note these little details though (applies to NEW tickets, not exisiting/open ones)...

Are there any change fees?

There are no change fees when you rebook within the validity of the ticket so you have more flexibility to plan ahead.

Can I request a full refund even if my flight hasn’t been cancelled?

Yes, you can request a refund if your flight hasn’t been cancelled. A change fee and/or a difference in fare may also apply if you choose to change the date or destination of your booking.

What can I do if my destination currently has travel restrictions and I’m not sure if this will still be in effect on my date of travel?

You have several options available to you if your flight has not yet been cancelled. You can keep your booking and look out for updates on the situation at your destination. You can also reschedule or cancel your booking.

However, please note that if your situation doesn’t fall under the requirements of our relaxed policies due to the COVID‑19 situation, a change fee and/or fare difference may apply if you decide to change or cancel your trip.

What can I do if my situation is not covered under your relaxed polices due to COVID‑19 but I want to cancel my trip anyway?

You can still reschedule or cancel your flight. However, please note that a change fee and/or fare difference may apply. And if you choose to request a refund for this booking, the amount will be processed according to the fare rules of your ticket.
