The Travellers Rest

Ratings and reviews, food and ambience, location and contact.

Over the weekend I was fortunate enough to dine here twice. On both occasions I had my daughter (17months old) with me and we were made to feel extremely welcome and valued. The meal portions were very good value for money, but more importantly the... food was tasty and hot upon service, compliments to the chef for this. The service of all members of staff on both occasions was polite and professional and since my previous visit, big improvements have been made. Thank you for a lovely experience. More

Thank you Nikitah for such a fantastic review for the travellers rest on trip advisor. We look forward to seeing you soon back up at the pub Thanks Tom

I always love coming to the Travelers Rest and so do my friends. Based on the qualitiy of the food, value for money, service and atmosphere it is becoming our favourite place to eat in Nottingham. The food and menu are especially surprising, always impressed... by the meals the chef's prepare. More

Thank you very much for such a lovely review we love our regular guests that come back time and time again to use our establishment. We look forward to seeing you soon Thanks again Tom

Shelley, our waitress (which is a gross understatement) made mine and my fathers dining experience incredible. I’m a vegan and ordered the red pepper and sweet potato kofta skewers as a starter with the chef’s garden salad as a main which happens to come with... red pepper and sweet potato kofta skewers as well. Despite the restaurant being busier than usual for a Wednesday evening, Shelley spent time arranging something custom as a main instead of just letting me have double kofta skewers. After spending longer than most would talking with me and asking what I liked, she put through an order for the garden salad with mushrooms and avocado instead of the kofta skewers and it was delicious. She also checked in multiple times to make sure I was happy with my meal. This level of attention and willingness to go above and beyond has made a favourable and lasting impression. I will, as a result of Shelley, be returning regularly and recommending this restaurant to anyone and everyone. She deserves a pay rise and I would of given a higher rating if I could!! More

Hi Alex Unfortunately Shelley has already seen this review as she takes great pride in our feedback so I am probably going to have to reward her! The chocolate bar is in the post :) Seriously though I very much appreciate you taking the time... More

Sat outside for drinks as table was booked for 7.45. Waitress arrived with incorrect order and one drink missing. While giving order for food was informed quite a few meals were unavailable so three of us opted for a steak. Had to wait over half... an hour for starters then had to ask for utensils. Chicken goujons consisted of three small pieces of meat with a lot of dressing for nearly £6? Steaks came and were served to the wrong customer. Fillet was given to an order of sirloin and vice versa. On requesting replacement was given sirloin again instead of fillet. Informed waitress to exclude this meal on the bill. Was given the option of complimentary desserts but refused. While dining, ordered a bottle of wine which came with a glass which we asked to exchange being dirty. Glass was handed over from another tray by passing waitress. It appears this offer is becoming very popular to the extent that communication and service is lacking due to the inability of the staff to cope not only with customers holding reservations but 'walk in' people taking advantage of the offer. If you are considering visiting this restaurant and desire a decent meal with good service ignore the offer on the three days and book sometime in the remaining week. More

This is usually one of my favourite places for food but on this occasion I was very disappointed! We had to wait ages for a table and were then put on a table in a corner of the pub with no room and it was... absolutely freezing! We asked to be moved but they could not accommodate us. The majority of the food ordered was very nice however the gammon was cold and had to be returned and my steak was lukewarm. The meal was to celebrate my mother’s 77th birthday so was a very disappointing experience and I will probably choose an alternative venue for our next family occasion. More

I’m very sorry about the experience you had Helen when you visited last. Hopefully next time we can get it right and we will definitely take on board the criticism. Sorry Tom

Went mid week with husband. Greeted by instructions, 'footprints' on floor and basically a list of what we could and couldn't do. Ordered food, good service, however waitress stated we would have to take the drinks off the tray as they weren't allowed to touch the... glasses (how did they get on there then and how do they get off the table when we leave?!) Food was lovely, scampi for husband and lemon and coriander battered halloumi for me which was lovely. Price for a large glass of rose wine digustingly over priced, would have had soft drink if I'd realised just how much they were charging for very mediocre wine. All in all not a bad experience, but after all the fuss about COVID19, they didn't take our details for track n trace, clearly the most important thing at the moment. More

HI Judith Of course we have to touch the glass to fill it but thats by the bar person who like all of us has strict regular sanitisation of their hands in place and if the waitress then contacts the glass it is an unecessary... More

We went here as a family for my birthday. It took almost 40 minutes before we even had a drink. We had to repeatedly ask to order food and more drinks. The only time anyone showed the remotest interest in us was when we asked... for the bill!! The young girls who were waiting looked as if they really did not wish to be there! The man who seemed to be in charge was abrupt and almost rude! On the plus side and the only reason this gets 3 out of 5 and not 1, is that the food was really good. The chefs must be gutted to work so hard to produce decent food for customers to be treated so badly by front of house staff. More

Thanks for leaving us your rating. I'd really like to know how we could have made your experience better next time, please get in touch using 0115 926 4412 and ask for Richard

We used to use the Travellers quite frequently for a glass of beer on the way home, but after our visit for food in June 2018 we stopped going (see review "Always the little things"). So, after 18 months we popped in again this week,... just for a beer. My attention was drawn to the next table where a particularly nice looking meat pie was being consumed so, despite my vow not to eat here again, we booked for 6.00pm on Friday night. My wife ordered fish and chip (they of the tripple cooked variety). I ordered steak and red wine pie with tripple cooked chips. "Sorry, was the reply, we're out of the steak pie. The last one's just gone". So I asked for the menu again and chose the lamb pie with tripple cooked chips. "Sorry, was the reply, we're out of tripple cooked chips" I was offered mash and other alternatives, but not tripple cooked chips!!! I said to the waitress, "It's 6.00pm on a Friday night. How on earth can you be out of chips"? So she kindly offered me another chance to be dissappointed by looking at the menu again. I declined, saying "We're off". That didn't register so when asked again, I said "We're going". The waitress hurried off to see the Manager, who told the waitress that our drinks were on the house. So thanks for the free pint of excellent beer, but no thanks to the pathetic level of service. This place may get some good reviews, but my view is the place is a joke. More

It's been a couple of years since i last went to the travellers rest pub, i stopped going because the food wasn't that good & i wish i hadn't given it anougher chance. It was my sisters birthday & she booked it, so i didn't... want to say anything. But she also had the fish & chips as well as my mum. We all agreed the food was dreadful. The fish was dry & overcooked, but there wasn't much fish in it anyway. The chips were advertised as triple cooked, but in my opinion they were just cheap oven chips. We did complain & the waitress said sorry & gave us 25% off the bill. The staff were nice enough. But sorry to say i will not be going back again. More

Hi Tracey Thank you for the feedback. The Chips are not oven chips. Unfortunately everyone has a varied opinion on what is classed as 'triple cooked chips. Your comments will be passed on to the food development team. A majority of our guests enjoy them... More

Whether it is due to covid, chef and waiting staff inexperience, I was so disappointed with the whole occasion from start to finish. The food we were given and price I paid did not match for quality and taste. My sister and I had the... mushrooms on sourdough crumpet. It is a basic supermarket crumpet. The mushrooms were tinned no taste whatsoever. The sauce had curdled and very poor flavour. My sister said her burger was just OK. You can get better at a McDonald's. I had fish and chips with peas. Peas very poor quality. Fish and chips tasteless, poor quality and cold. I paid £13.99 for this meal. My son was with me and wanted the Belly pork which they had run out the day before?? He had the truffle cheese chips which were horrible. Soggy, greasey and tasteless. I would have got better quality had I gone to the Plainsman or Weatherspoons in Mapperley for much cheaper price and better quality. The service was very poor even though they had efficient staff doing waiting service. We were kept waiting for drinks and food service a ridiculous length of time. No staff were wearing masks. People were crammed closely together when there could have been better spacing apart. Then when it came to paying for the meal and drinks they were not only asking for a tip which in England is down to the individual who thinks it is worthy of a gratuity for a good service and food. Plus asking for a charity donation as well without explanation to where the money is going too. The only good thing about the day was the views of the sheep and countryside in my opinion. I will not be returning. More

Morning Julie Thank you for the feedback. Due to the high volume of food we do at our very busy pub, unfortunately we do not bake our own bread - however the cheese and mustard straw that accompanies the mushroom starter is very home made!... More

The establishment and staff have got the COVID practises of to a fine art , apart from hand cleansing in the toilets. Staff in fully compliant protective gear and signage everywhere . The staff were polite if somewhat “Robitic” and lacking any allowable personality. Food... ,well I can only comment on my choice , Atlantic Cod chips and mushy peas. I think the fish had been stored in an Atlantic freezer for past four months . I knew when it arrived on my table ,all curled up , that the tail end of fish would of be varying quality . Yes the thin tail was over cooked and the fleshier end soggy . I pointed the problem out to a waitress who took the plate away . They said it would be 5 mins for a replacement and yes a complete new meal presented . By this time my fellow diners had nearly finished their meals . The fish once again was the same . How can they not be able to cook a piece of fish properly? By this time I’d given up the will to live and written the whole experience of as bad luck. Also just to mention , the mushy peas ! A miniscule portion of processed peas ( a table spoon no exaggeration) . Come on this is Nottingham , we love our proper mushy peas, not from a tin and a decent quantity . Finally I can only agree with a previous review that they were possibly the worst fish and peas I’d ever had . Don’t you ever learn from these reviews? More

Hi Dicktari Thank yuo for the feedback, I can assure you the food isnt 4 months old otherwise it would be hard to maintain our 5* EHO kitchen rating that we are very proud of, but I take your comments on board and have spoken... More

Me and my long time partner recently visited this restaurant and all I can say is wow. Even during this crazy time we are living in the staff made it very enjoyable and stress free regardless of the busy atmosphere. A big thank you to... the team at the travellers rest who got our food out quickly despite it being busy and especially our waitress Bayleigh who was always quick to take our order with a big smile. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone! More

Thank you so much for your wonderful review! I will pass on all your comments to the team, especially bayleigh!

What first class service this wonderful restaurant offers. My Wife requested the Gluten Free menu on arrival and after being seated asked for more information on one of the choices which our server was not sure about and although they were very busy literally moments... later another Lady arrived who explained everything. The food and drinks were all served at just the right amount of time and were both delicious and very good value for money and best of all when we had finished we were presented with the bill and our table vacated within a minute of so. We shall be returning shortly such was our experience. Thank you to all! More

Thanks so much for the wonderful review, and so glad to see the team went above and beyond to make yours and your wife's visit easier! We look forward to welcoming you back soon!

We arrived late Sunday afternoon, we hadn't booked a table so we're unable to sit in the dining area but we're happy to sit in the bar area. The seating and overall appearance of the bar was lovely and comfortable and is also dog friendly.... I was given the Gluten free Sunday menu which was a little disappointing as the options were very limited but opted for a trio of meats Sunday lunch, my husband ordered a mixed grill and a son ordered a child's pizza. All the food arrived quickly and was presented nicely. The food however wasn't very warm and I would have preferred abit more gravy. Being in the bar we didn't get a courtesy check so was unable to raise the issue and didn't want to get back in the bar queue. Overall total including 2 cokes and a beer for £48 so a little pricey for the standard of food and service that we received. More

Hi Ammiem_13, I really appreciate your honest feedback, and it will definitely be taken on board. I'm sorry for the experience you've had, and I hope you'll give us another try as this is not our usual standard.

The food here is average pub grub at best. My wife had Lasagne which she said was tasteless to the point where she'd struggle to know what she was eating if she was blindfolded. It came with a horrible lump of chopped lettuce which was... supposedly "dressed leaves". I had what the menu described as "Rum and Cola glazed gammon steak", what I got was gammon with a pot of barbeque sauce. The menu also said that we would get "triple cooked chips" when all we got was oven chips. None of this was inedible but it was mostly disappointing given the menu description. More

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent visit. I’m so sorry to hear you was disappointed with your food on this occasion, please rest assured I will be looking into this with our food team. I do hope you’ll give us the chance to... More
