Now Facebook Wants You To Share Where You’re “Traveling To”

Serendipitous meetups with friends while traveling make us happy and Facebook wants to be the portal to that joy. So this week it quietly rolled out a new feature that lets you share where you’re “traveling to”. Facebook’s Page mentioned it today, so I asked the company which said that after some testing, “traveling to” is now available to all users. It has big potential to bring Facebook valuable data on what’s important to us.

The “traveling to” option is found within the activity and emotion sharing smiley-face button on the Facebook status composer on both web and mobile. One you select it, you can choose a destination city, but not a departure and return time. Facebook will then append “traveling to Boston” with a little plane icon. Some destinations get their own special emoji, like a Statue Of Liberty for New York, or a Hollywood sign for Los Angeles.

(Note: I wouldn’t recommend sharing these posts publicly though, as you don’t want to advertise your absence from home for security reasons. It might be nice if Facebook warned people about that.)

Without “traveling to”, most us just end up posting “I’m coming to New York, who wants to hang out?”. But I’ve found I got little engagement with those posts. If users happen to check in at an airport, Facebook would ask where they were heading and show that in the post, but few people know about this and checking into airports just feels lame and braggadocious. Some people use third-party app like TripIt to share their itineraries.

All these options will probably see less usage now that there’s an easily accessible “traveling to” feature. And yes, Path has automatically done this for a while by auto-publishing when you appear in a new city. But as Facebook has proven over and over, it doesn’t care who did it first. It wants to do it at scale.

What’s puzzling about the feature is that Facebook confirms that sharing where you’re  “traveling to” won’t change anything else about how Facebook works. But it should.

When you’re in a different city, your Facebook should be different too. It should show you relevant stories from local friends and ads from nearby businesses instead of ones where you live, and let people know you’re in town so you can meet up. None of these happen right now…

…But I wouldn’t be surprised if they did soon. Facebook’s whole value to users and its business model depend on relevancy — knowing what you want to see. Explicitly telling it where you’re traveling to is an extremely strong signal that content from or about your destination is more important to you.

And for its own business as well as making the ads I have to see anyways more interesting, it should show me promos for local businesses where I’ve traveled to. Yes, most people hate ads no matter what, but I’d rather see one for a bagel shop in New York I could try out while I’m there than one back in San Francisco that I’ll forget about before I return. (Plus, SF bagels are a joke. Someone vacuum-seal and send me some from Manhattan, stat.)

A frequent complaint about Facebook is that it’s actually isolating. We sit at home reading News Feed instead of actually calling or visiting friends. “Traveling to” could let Facebook better fulfill its mission to connect us. After all, life on the move is a lot more fun when it’s not spent alone in hotel rooms.

Facebook has unveiled an update to its "Update Status" box that allows users to indicate that they are "traveling to" a particular destination.

To access it, click on the " What's on your mind " section to unveil the more specific options one can use in the field. Click on the smiley face icon to bring up the drop-down list for the "What are you doing?" section, and either type in "traveling to" or select it from the presented options.

Most likely, the update is intended to alert friends about your travels so they can serve up recommendations or simply be jealous of your jet-setting ways. But as TechCrunch noted , you'll probably want to make sure your vacation plans are only broadcast to those in your inner circle or those you trust, lest it inspire someone to burglarize your home in your absence.

If that doesn't sound like it's that big a deal, since it's not like people scrub through Facebook to cross-reference users' addresses with status updates, it's worth pointing out the number of fun Twitter tools accomplish just that.

Case in point: Please Rob Me , which was a popular means by which users' public tweets about going on vacation or leaving their homes were cross-referenced against their other publicly posted information about their actual address. It had its Twitter shut down in 2010, but insisted that it was intended to raise awareness, not crime stats.

Facebook users, meanwhile, seem to have similar concerns about the "Traveling to" option. "This is a perfect opportunity for you to get robbed when you're not home. This is just as good as you telling all the criminals out there to go ahead and rob you while you're on vacation. Friends, don't post anything until you come back from vacation. Let's use common sense," commented Facebook user Luis Motta .

It's unclear just what, if anything, Facebook plans to do with this new data point about one's whereabouts. According to the company, posting about one's travel plans shouldn't change anything about the service itself. TechCrunch suggested that there be more granular controls about the "traveling to" section, though Facebook users already have the option of sending their updates to the public, friends, or a customized group. Bottom line for this and any other social media use: use your brain when posting personal information.

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - UPDATE (6/27/2024 at 7 p.m.): A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for parts of central North Dakota (highlighted in yellow on the map below) effective until 2 a.m. CDT. Primary threats include: scattered damaging winds and isolated significant gusts to 80 mph likely, and scattered large hail and isolated very large hail events to 2 inches in diameter possible. The Tornado Watch remains in place for some western North Dakota counties until 9 p.m. MDT. Severe thunderstorms along the Highway 85 corridor as of 7 p.m. are moving east.

UPDATE (6/27/2024 at 4:50 p.m.): A Tornado Watch has been issued for parts of western North Dakota (highlighted in red on the map below) effective until 9 p.m. MDT. Primary threats include: a couple of tornadoes possible, widespread damaging winds and isolated significant gusts to 80 mph likely, and scattered large hail and isolated very large hail events to 3 inches in diameter likely.

UPDATE (6/27/2024 at 4 p.m.): Severe Thunderstorm Watches have been issued for parts of Montana and South Dakota. Expect a watch to be issued soon in North Dakota as the severe thunderstorms push east. A watch means that atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms. Warnings will be issued when severe weather is imminent , and you should take shelter immediately if a warning is issued for your location.

UPDATE (6/27/2024 at 3 p.m.): Numerous severe thunderstorms (risk level 3 out of 5) are likely across eastern Montana into western and central North Dakota and South Dakota from Thursday afternoon into Thursday night. Expected hazards include very large hail up to baseball size (2.75 inches in diameter), damaging winds as high as 80 mph , and a few tornadoes .

Thunderstorms are likely to first develop in Montana over higher terrain and near the storm system center. The most favorable period where all threats are on the table, including the highest risk for tornadic activity, is when thunderstorms are initially discrete, or individual, between approximately 4 p.m. CDT/3 p.m. MDT and 11 p.m. CDT/10 p.m. MDT. With time, thunderstorm clusters may grow into a line of storms capable of producing significant damaging winds through the western and central Dakotas.

The severe potential will gradually wane as thunderstorms push into the eastern Dakotas overnight, especially once they are east of Highway 281.

The fast progression of the storms to the east should limit the flooding threat, but conditions will continue to be monitored.

Taiwanese Are Told to Avoid China After It Threatens Independence Backers

Taiwan raised its warning level for travel to China on Thursday, urging its citizens not to visit there unless necessary after Beijing spelled out potential punishments — including execution in extreme cases — for what it called “diehard supporters of Taiwanese independence.”

China regards Taiwan, a democratically governed island of 23 million about 100 miles off the mainland coast, as its territory. It demands that Taiwan ultimately accept unification and has long denounced Taiwanese who oppose its claims to the island.

Last week, China turned up the pressure, issuing legal guidelines that detailed the steps it might take to punish supporters of Taiwanese self-rule. They came as tensions between U.S.-backed Taiwan and China ratchet ever higher. Last month, Taiwan swore in a new president, Lai Ching-te, who has vowed to preserve democracy on the island and is denounced by Beijing.

The new rules adopted by China authorize execution for what it describes as exceptionally severe cases of Taiwanese separatism, though the language stops short of saying exactly what actions might constitute a severe offense.

In response , Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, which deals with policy toward the mainland, said Beijing had “raised the risk to personal safety for nationals traveling to China, Hong Kong and Macau” by “clinging to its own position” on Taiwan.

The new president, Mr. Lai, criticized the new rules. “China has no right to sanction Taiwanese people for their political opinions or pursue prosecution across borders,” he said on social media earlier this week. “Democracy is not a crime; autocracy is what’s truly malicious.”

Mr. Lai called on China to engage in dialogue, and has stopped short of calling for Taiwanese independence. He says he wants to preserve the status quo, with Taiwan enjoying autonomous governance.

Beijing, however, has denounced Mr. Lai, declaring him a separatist and greeting his new government with inflammatory rhetoric and a flurry of military exercises near the island.

Despite Beijing’s escalating antagonism and its military muscle-flexing, many Taiwanese appear sanguine. A recent poll showed that most people on the island believe that the United States would intervene should China invade, but some question whether Washington and their own government have nettled Beijing needlessly.

Beijing has a history of detaining people linked to Taiwan.

In 2023, a Taiwanese-based Chinese citizen, Li Yanhe , who published books critical of the Chinese Communist Party, was charged with crimes against national security. And in 2022, a democracy advocate, Li Ming-che, was released after serving five years in Chinese prison over accusations of subverting the government.

A generational gap in travel has also emerged among Taiwanese, fraying ties to the mainland. A 2023 poll showed that travelers over 40 years old were much more likely to visit China than their younger counterparts, who were more likely to visit Japan.

Minnesota flooding: Rapidan Dam near Mankato holds, roads and state parks closed

Authorities in Blue Earth County continued to monitor the imperiled Rapidan Dam on Tuesday after the rain-swollen Blue Earth River carved a new channel around the structure.

As of Tuesday morning, the dam southwest of Mankato remained intact — but was bypassed on its west side by a new river channel the rushing water carved out on Monday. Authorities said it happened after debris piled up against the more-than-century-old dam in the wake of recent torrential rain.

While the dam has partially failed since water went over the top and around the side, the dam structure has not broken.

Blue Earth County Engineer and Public Works Director Ryan Thilges said even if the dam fails, the Blue Earth River would only rise by a few inches. Thilges said because the water is not backing up at the dam, it would not result in a major surge rushing downstream.

“The structure of the dam is still intact and in place. As you can see right behind me, the water ran around the west edge of the dam and is now eroding the slopes to the west and to the north,” Thilges said.

If the dam does fail, Thilges is more concerned about released sediment flowing downstream.

County officials said Tuesday that the volume of water flowing was slightly lower than it had been on Monday.

That new channel washed away an electrical substation below the dam, knocking out power to hundreds of homes on Monday. Xcel Energy said that service was restored overnight.

Blue Earth County said the Rapidan Dam has experienced regular flooding — but those floods have taken a toll on the structure.

There are no large-scale evacuations in place below the dam.

County officials said Tuesday that there had been routine monitoring of the dam starting on Saturday. As of Sunday evening, they said, “the dam exhibited high flows and additional debris, but still displayed adequate capacity.”

Problems with water going over the dam, and then carving the new path around it, were first reported early Monday.

A home adjacent to the dam that’s been threatened by the new river channel remained intact as of Tuesday morning — but officials said the water continues to erode that slope.

After viewing flood damage in southern Minnesota by helicopter Tuesday afternoon, Gov. Tim Walz and U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar said the state is likely to be eligible for federal disaster aid.

“I am not an engineer, but looking at that dam and seeing the severe damage there as well as washed out roads in Minnesota, I believe we could well be into our $10.5 million. That is the level at which federal aid would tick in for public infrastructure,” Klobuchar said.

Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson said that initial damage assessments are underway in northern Minnesota, and he’s met with staff from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Walz said damage assessments will take place alongside cleanup. He said a complicating factor is that water levels are still rising in many southern Minnesota.

U.S. Highway 169 closed

Travel in the Minnesota River valley got a lot more difficult late Monday and early Tuesday, as rising river levels forced the Minnesota Department of Transportation to close two stretches of U.S. Highway 169.

The highway is closed between Mankato and St. Peter, and also between St. Peter and Le Sueur. That means all the traffic from that busy four-lane highway is being detoured onto two-lane state and county roads.

Both Minnesota River bridges at St. Peter are also closed. And some on- and off-ramps along Highway 169 in North Mankato also are closed due to flooding.

To the east, Gov. Tim Walz deployed the National Guard to the city of Waterville on Monday. He called the flooding there and across the state “catastrophic,” and said it could rival historic flooding in 1997 and 2007. Walz and Sen. Amy Klobuchar are set to make an aerial survey of southern Minnesota flooding later Tuesday.

State Highway 60 through Windom was also among roads closed due to flooding on Tuesday.

The city is experiencing historic flooding. The Des Moines River at Windom is at its highest level on record . The National Weather Service said it’s forecast to stay near that record high before slowly receding late this week.

Windom City Council member Jenny Quade said city crews have been working hard to keep up with the rising water.

“They put a barricade up to say, ‘there’s water coming up,’ to ... warn you beforehand,” Quade said. “But by the time they get all around the city ... they’re having to go back and move those barricades because the barricades are getting under water.”

Some residents have evacuated homes near the river on the northwest side of Windom. The Red Cross has set up a shelter at Jackson County Central High School in the city of Jackson — which also is experiencing flooding .

Jackson city officials reported Tuesday that work continued to reinforce dikes protecting the town from the rising Des Moines River.

U.S. Highway 71 through Jackson is closed due to flooding.

Parks, trails close after flooding

State parks across Minnesota are recovering from recent heavy rains and flooding.

Underground tours at Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park  were halted last week after the park received more than 7 inches of rain in less than 24 hours. The DNR said underground tours will be suspended for at least three weeks while crews pump water out of the mine. Surface tours of the mine are still available daily.

Cave tours at Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park in southeast Minnesota are also on hold due to flooding. The pedestrian bridge to historic Forestville has been inspected and is open to use, according to the DNR, and the Big Spring trail has reopened to use.

Bison and prairie tours at Blue Mounds State Park in southwest Minnesota are canceled this weekend. The DNR says park staff will assess water levels on Wednesday, and they hope to be able to offer tours next weekend. The bison drive at Minneopa State Park near Mankato is closed due to flooding, as is the Minneopa Falls area and several trails within the park.

Fort Snelling State Park in the Twin Cities is closed until floodwaters recede and park staff can assess and repair damage.

There are washouts and damage on the Gitchi Gami and North Shore state trails in northeast Minnesota, according to the DNR. And the Minnesota Valley State Trail is significantly flooded.

The DNR is also urging caution on state water trails: ”High currents and floating objects are just two reasons to avoid paddling in flooded waterways.”

Manure overflowing

More than a dozen manure pits are overflowing at feedlots in southwestern Minnesota.

State agriculture commissioner Tom Peterson said the feedlots are working with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. He said the stormwater and manure has discharged onto farm fields and not into any bodies of water.

“Historic rainfalls can cause issues for manure management systems that are not designed to handle extreme amounts of rainfall and we are providing advice on actions they can take to avoid an overflow or lessen the impacts should one occur,” the MPCA said in a statement.

The MPCA said it’s received reports of 17 instances where liquid manure storage pits have overflowed on 15 cattle feedlots located in Nobles, Rock and Jackson counties.

“These storage areas hold highly diluted manure that is collected as part of stormwater runoff from the feedlots. The manure becomes further diluted once combined with the high volume of floodwaters,” the MPCA statement said.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the MPCA continue to monitor the situation.

International Roaming Outage Affecting Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile Customers [Updated]

There appears to be an ongoing outage with international roaming across multiple cellular networks, with Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile customers abroad complaining about the issue on social networks and cellular community forums .

Based on feedback from customers that have managed to contact support, the providers are aware of the issue with international roaming and are actively working on resolving it, although there have been reports that this could take several hours. We'll update this article as soon as we learn more.

Update 2: Bloomberg reports that a Verizon customer service representative who was contacted from the UK on Thursday said that it's an ongoing issue that engineers are working to address.

Update 3: The multi-network outage is related to issues at international connection partner Syniverse , according to a person familiar with the situation. The company says the estimated time of restoration is 12 hours up to 24 hours.

I'm always curious with issues like this, do people seriously think that a vendor is just going to sit around and not work on the problem? While their networks aren't as robust as they like us to think, they are going to resolve these issues if nothing else to avoid government hassling them for causing an outage.

This screwed me so bad yesterday in Mexico City. Carrier left us out to dry. I’m leaving Verizon over this. What I went through yesterday when this randomly happened in a random neighborhood of CDMX I will never forgive this company for.

I love how all of these people are disagreeing with me like I didn’t have a horrible experience in Mexico City over this issue. It’s actually a personal thing and you people shouldn’t really have an opinion at all. Pretty rude.

Although it sometimes gets a bad rap as a dangerous city, Naples is a safe place to visit as long as you keep some safety considerations in mind. This guide, full of local advice, covers everything from the coronavirus to tips for solo travelers. 

What is the status of COVID-19 in Naples, Italy? 

Many questions about traveling to Italy have to do with COVID right now. Perhaps you’re wondering when Naples will be safe to visit or whether it’s difficult for Americans to travel to Italy right now. 

Here’s the latest:

Both vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers from the United States may visit Italy . Negative COVID test results are not required.

Once you’ve arrived, you’ll need to check and follow the COVID-19 rules in Italy. Right now, the only nationwide requirement to keep in mind is that FFP2 masks are required on public transportation and in healthcare settings. Individual businesses are also allowed to require masks if they wish to do so. 

Safety in Naples 

The third-largest city in Italy, Naples is known for its pizza, proximity to sites like Pompeii, and seaside views. Locals tell it’s among the best cities to visit in Italy—although it does have a mixed reputation when it comes to safety. 

Locals tell us this reputation is largely unfair. Naples, like any big city, has safe and unsafe areas. On the whole, it’s a lively, dynamic place to visit in Italy. Plus, staying in Naples makes it easy to get to top Italian tourist attractions like Mount Vesuvius and the Island of Capri .  

Common scams in Naples 

Although Italy is safe on the whole, locals say you should beware of being scammed. They say that common scams in Naples include: 

• Taxi scams: Be cautious about taking taxis in Naples. Taxi drivers may overcharge you, so be sure you take an official city cab—these are white, and will run a meter. Transportation in Italy is generally safe, but locals note that in Naples you may encounter traffic and aggressive drivers.
• Incorrect change scam : Pay attention to your change when purchasing something with cash. Someone may try to slip you the incorrect amount, counting on the fact that you aren’t familiar with the currency.
• Charm scam : If someone approaches you with a gift—a bracelet, a flower, or another charm—firmly refuse and walk away. The gift is not free. If you accept the gift, the scammer will demand payment and become aggressive. 

These scams are common throughout the country, so keep them in mind whether you’re enjoying Naples or exploring all the things to see in Rome.

Local tip : You can navigate Naples by tram, metro, and even by funicular .  

Is Naples safe for solo travelers? 

Italy is a safe destination for solo travelers—and, with proper precautions, so is Naples. Locals tell us that anyone traveling alone should keep these things in mind: 

• Know which areas to avoid: Solo travelers—anyone, really—should educate themselves on which parts of the city to avoid. Locals tell us this includes outer neighborhoods like Scampia. 
• Keep an eye on your drink : To avoid drink spiking, be sure you keep an eye on your drink at all times. If someone offers you a drink, be sure you see it made. 
• Be firm if you want someone to leave you alone : If you go to a bar alone as a woman, someone might approach. Be firm if you want them to leave you alone. 
• Exercise caution at night : Know how to get home at night. Don’t wander far from central areas. You know—follow the same precautions as you would at home.

Natural disasters in Naples 

Although unlikely, locals tell us that it’s possible for a natural disaster to occur in Naples—the city is somewhat prone to earthquakes.

In addition, the city is in the shadow of an active volcano—but the last time Mount Vesuvius erupted was in 1944.

Going-to-the-sun road open for 2024 season.

WEST GLACIER, Mont. [June 22, 2024] – Going-to-the-Sun Road officially opened this morning for the 2024 summer season. The road may now be accessed by motorized vehicles over Logan Pass from both the West Glacier and St. Mary entrances.      Road crews battled avalanches and deep snow levels above 5,500 ft this year, and facilities staff worked against freezing temperatures to get the water system operational. As of Thursday, staff were busy shoveling walkways and access into the visitor center.    Services at Logan Pass include restroom facilities, but potable water is currently not yet available. Visitors should plan to bring their own drinking water.     Visitor information services will be provided at the Logan Pass Visitor Center from 9 am to 7 pm daily starting June 22. The Glacier National Park Conservancy bookstore will be operating inside of the Logan Pass Visitor Center.     With Going-to-the-Sun Road fully open, the number of vehicle reservations available will be increased. For the remainder of the season, this increase will be executed through the next-day reservations available at 7 pm MDT each day. Vehicle reservations are exclusively available on Recreation.gov and not available at the park.  Vehicle reservations are required to enter Going-to-the-Sun Road from the west side of the park past Apgar. Reservations will be required for those traveling by vehicle or motorcycle from 6 am to 3 pm each day through September 8, 2024. Vehicle reservations will not be required to enter Going-to-the-Sun Road from the east side of the park at the St. Mary Entrance this summer.  Vehicle reservations are also currently required for the North Fork, and starting July 1, 2024, reservations will be required at Many Glacier.    Visitors with lodging, camping, or commercial activity reservations (e.g., boat tours and horseback rides) do not need a vehicle reservation and can use their confirmation email to access the portion of the park for which their activity is booked.  Service reservations originating east of Logan Pass cannot be used instead of a vehicle reservation for access past the Apgar Check Point heading east on Going-to-the-Sun Road.    The park is open 24/7 and visitors may enter the park before 6 am or after 3 pm without a vehicle reservation.     Additional vehicle reservation information and frequently asked questions are available on the park’s Vehicle Reservation page .     With the opening of the road, the weekend hiker/biker shuttle will no longer be operating. Daily shuttle service along Going-to-the-Sun Road will begin operating July 1 on a first-come, first-served basis at the Apgar and St. Mary visitor centers with stops along Going-to-the-Sun Road.     Parking at Logan Pass, Apgar Village, and other areas may be congested or temporarily unavailable. After the daily shuttles begin operating on July 1, visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the free shuttle for hiker access to Logan Pass although waits for shuttles may be long depending on the time and location. Check the park website for additional information on shuttle stops.  While driving along the road, particularly through the Rim Rock area (approximately one mile west of Logan Pass) visitors should be aware of potential rockfall and should not slow down or stop in this section. Rocks and other debris continue to fall throughout the summer, requiring daily clean up. With the level of snow at Logan Pass, visitors should use extreme caution and refrain from crossing snowfields or standing under snow overhangs.    Vehicles and vehicle combinations longer than 21 feet, and/or wider than 8 feet, are prohibited on Going-to-the-Sun Road between Avalanche Campground and Rising Sun. Vehicles over 10 feet in height may have difficulty driving west from Logan Pass due to narrow lanes and projecting rock overhangs.     The Highline Trail and a portion of Grinnell Glacier Trail remain closed due to hazardous snow conditions and emerging vegetation. For up-to-date information on trail conditions and clearing activities, visit the park’s trail status webpage . Hidden Lake Trail will be closed June 15 to August 7 from the overlook to Hidden Lake due to bear activity near the lake outlet while fish are spawning.       Based on observed traffic patterns during previous vehicle reservation pilot seasons, vehicular traffic is expected to increase every day at 3 pm when vehicle reservations are no longer required for the day. For safety purposes, Going-to-the-Sun Road is closed to bicycle use (both directions) through September 8 between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. from Apgar to Logan Pass.     Visitors are encouraged to limit vehicle idling to no more than two minutes in parking lots, at scenic viewpoints and trailheads, and while stopped in traffic lines and road construction to benefit the health of both the public and the park resources.     Visitors should not throw food waste, including apple cores, orange peels, sunflower seeds, unwanted drinks (coffee, tea, soda) etc., out car windows while waiting in lines. This attracts wildlife to the roadways which increases wildlife fatalities. Discard garbage in bear-proof garbage cans.
