Lance Armstrong's Damien Hirst-designed 'butterfly bike' fetched a cool $500,000 during an auction at Sothebys in New York on Sunday in aid of the rider's LiveStrong cancer charity.

The one-off creation by British artist Hirst was ridden by Armstrong during the final stage of this year's Tour de France. It's selling price makes it the most expensive bike in the world.

Hirst used real butterfly wings, lacquered onto the frame of a Trek Madone.

Bono, the lead singer of Irish band U2, had approached Hirst to create the bike for Armstrong, with the view of it being auctioned for the LiveStrong cancer charity. Art fan Armstrong also has a Damien Hirst artwork in his collection.

"The technical problems were immense," Hirst said when the bike was unveiled in July.

"I wanted to use real butterflies and not just pictures of butterflies, because I wanted it to shimmer when the light catches it like only real butterflies do, and we were trying not to add any extra weight to the bike."

The project attracted some negative attention, with some animal rights activists branding the use of real butterfly wings as 'barbaric'. Hirst has often courted controversy, having gained notoriety with his infamous shark suspended in formaldehyde in 1992.

The World’s 7 Most Expensive Road Bikes

Lance Armstrong trek madone damien hirst

Cycling lovers will all agree that money spent on your precious bike is always money well spent. We all aspire to have lighter, faster, smoother, slicker rides. However, we generally hit a ceiling when it comes to what our bank balances will actually allow.

But let’s pretend for a second that money is no object, how much could we actually spend on a road bike? Quite a lot it turns out.

The winner is Trek Butterfly Madone, checking in at half a million dollars. No less than Lance Armstrong used it in the 2009 Tour de France.

Damien Hirst Trek Madone    Price: €470,000

Artist Damien Hirst placed the real butterfly wings on the bike’s concrete frame and rim. It fetched an amazing $500,000 at a Sotheby’s cancer benefit charity auction, making it top of the pops in our list of most expensive bikes.

Trek Yoshitomo Nara Speed Concept    Price: €176,000

Another bike customized for Armstrong at the 2009 Tour de France, this carbon-fiber bike features hand-painted designs by Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. This bike sold for $200,000 at a Sotheby’s auction.

Kaws Trek Madone    Price: €141,000

This bike fetched a handsome $160,000 at an auction. This shows that any bicycle associated with Lance Armstrong gets a fortune. The bike features Kaws’ signature “chomper” teeth design on its frame and wheel rims. It also boasts splendid aerodynamics, stunning accessories, and loads high.

Aurumania Crystal Edition Gold Bike    Price: €93,500

Nothing screams bling quite like a gold bike. This 24-karat gold-plated bike comes adorned with 600 Swarovski crystals and is finished with a luxurious moulded leather Brooks saddle for an extra touch of class. Elsewhere, the handlebar grips are also made from hand-sewn, chocolate-brown leather. Only 10 of these bikes were made worldwide.

Trek Madone 7-Diamond    Price: €66,000

In 2005, just after Lance Armstrong won his record-breaking seventh Tour de France, Trek created a Madone 5.9 bicycle decorated with 100 white diamonds, along with seven man-made one-karat diamonds on its head badge. The one-of-a-kind bike was auctioned for charity and fetched $75,000.

Aston Martin One-77 Cycle    Price: €34,500

While the Lightweight Audi Sports Concept will set you back a cool €17,500, it is by no means the most expensive bike in its repertoire. Those looking for something a little bit of extra bling can opt for the Lighteweight Fahwerk Gold. This road rider’s dream is finished to the highest spec imaginable and is adorned with gold leaf to give it that extra little something.

Lance Armstrong auction: Damien Hirst 'Butterfly Bike' goes for $500,000

Lance Armstrong auction: Damien Hirst 'Butterfly Bike' goes for $500,000

The Damien Hirst-designed ‘Butterfly Bike’ ridden by Lance Armstrong during this year’s Tour de France was the star lot at Sotheby’s in New York last night, the hammer falling at half a million dollars.

As well as the Hirst bike, which Armstrong rode on the Champs Elysées during the Tour’s final stage, six others used by Armstrong during his comeback season were also auctioned, raising $1.3 million for the Texan’s Livestrong charity.

Jamie Niven, Vice Chairman of Sotheby’s and son of actor Sir David Niven, ran the auction and, after an introduction from Armstrong, the Trek Madone customised by Hirst with real butterflies, a recurring theme throughout the artist’s work, was the first item up for sale.

Armstrong kept his followers on Twitter updated throughout the auction, and his excitement was palpable as he tweeted that the bike had gone for “for 500,000.00!!! Half a million bucks!!!”

The time trial bike designed by Keny Scharf that Armstrong used during this year’s Giro d’Italia was next up, going for a more modest $45,000, which turned out to be the lowest winning bid of the evening.

Another time trial bike followed, this one ridden at the Anecy time trial during the Tour de France and designed by the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. Bidding closed at $200,000, which proved to be the second highest winning bid of the evening.

The next lot to sell was the Shepard Fairey-designed bike in Livestrong’s signature black and yellow that first appeared at the Giro d’Italia, which fetched $110,000, leading Armstrong to tweet, “this is insane.”

The cancer survivor said he was “stunned” at the $160,000 achieved by the next lot, another yellow and black Madone designed by KAWS that made its debut in the Milan-San Remo. It was also the bike being ridden by Armstrong when he crashed and broke his collarbone during the Vuelta Leon y Castilla, leading to it being fondly nicknamed “the widowmaker”.

The last of the custom-designed bikes, was a Trek Speed Concept time trial machine by Australian designer Marc Newson with a special design on the rear disc that seems to pulsate when in motion – although whether, at $110,000, it will ever be taken out on the road appears unlikely.

The final lot of the evening was the ‘stolen bike’, which attracted worldwide attention when it was taken by thieves from a team van in Sacramento during the Tour of California last year. That one went for $130,000, and Armstrong said that the total amount raised was “so incredibly humbling”.

It’s not yet known whether any of the bikes have been purchased with a view to being displayed to the public, but the six artist-designed bikes can still be viewed online at  /www.trekbikes.com/us/en/stages .

Damien Hirst at Tate Modern, April 2012

Damien Hirst's butterflies: distressing but weirdly uplifting

Patrick Barkham loves watching butterflies zip along the hedgerows. So how would he feel seeing them live and die as exhibits in Damien Hirst’s Tate Modern retrospective?

B utterflies made Damien Hirst 's career and this is how he repays them: in a stark, white, windowless room in Tate Modern , hundreds of insects pull themselves from their pupae only to die there a few days later, surrounded by gawping tourists.

For some visitors to Hirst's blockbuster retrospective, it is not the rotting cow's head surrounded by flies, the sheep in formaldehyde or the giant ashtray filled with cigarette butts that makes them feel queasy. It is the installation in Room 5, where tropical butterflies futilely flit around the boxy space, eventually falling to die on the floor, where they are promptly scooped up by security staff.

In and Out of Love was Hirst's first solo exhibition in London. In 1991, in a particularly humid room in Soho, he hung large white canvasses on which were glued butterfly pupae, ready to hatch. Emerging butterflies flew around the room, feeding on sugar water, rotting fruit and flowers before, with luck, mating and laying eggs for the next cycle of life. It caused a bit of a sensation.

Now it has been recreated for the Tate, and the effect is a little distressing and weirdly uplifting. I have always loved butterflies and, most of all, I like seeing them where they belong, zipping along the hedgerows in spring or floating across a woodland clearing in summer. But butterflies in tropical houses, and even those killed and mounted on cork boards, can still fascinate, inspire and tell us something about ourselves.

In Victorian times, butterfly collecting was a mainstream pursuit. Local people would rent their homes to enthusiastic collectors who would descend on butterfly hotspots – as if they were Wimbledon or the Olympics – during the flight season. Small boys would catch rarities and sell them to gentleman collectors for princely sums. Collecting was regarded as the perfect hobby for clergy – not as brutal as fox-hunting but still allowing for plentiful fresh air – and Victorian drawing rooms were brightened with mahogany drawers stuffed with rows of pinned, dead butterflies. Hirst's other butterfly art on display in the Tate, paintings that feature great collages of real butterfly wings, is more directly inspired by this rich heritage.

Dead butterflies may look macabre when two-thirds of Britain's 59 butterfly species are in decline. Butterfly collecting is frowned upon today and it is illegal to catch the rarer species, but the collectors discovered much about ecology and their hoards are still scientifically useful. They may be scarcer in our countryside but butterflies exert a greater influence than ever on aesthetics and design. Hirst is certainly not the first artist to be inspired by the brilliant iridescent blue scales on a morpho butterfly's wings – he joins a long line of artists from the ancient Egyptians to Renaissance painters and Salvador Dalí in depicting these insects. Butterflies have become ubiquitous emblems on greetings cards and high-street fashions, deployed to sell everything from banks to oven chips. Butterflies are bound up in our childhood, and maybe that is why they loom so large in our creative consciousness later in life. My earliest memories of being outdoors feature vivid flashes of cats, daffodils and small tortoiseshell butterflies. Many people have similar recollections; I wonder if Hirst does.

Some of those most fascinated by the tropical butterflies in Hirst's exhibition are children. "This is my circle of life," says Beatrice, six, showing me her sketch of an egg, caterpillar, pupa and butterfly. Her twin sister, Angelica, says she likes butterflies because of their graceful flight. "I'd like to do it myself," she says.

Butterflies feature as part of Damien Hirst's work In and Out of Love

Their mother remembers that her husband attended Hirst's original exhibition and was inspired by this "idea of a cycle of life being installed and allowed to express itself. It was one of the things that made Hirst very original." Is she worried about their welfare? "I'm totally concerned. I'm wondering if this one is suffering," she says, pointing to a large swallowtail bashing itself against the white wall like a distressed animal in a zoo. "There's a terrific poignancy about them because their lifecycle is so short and they are vulnerable and delicate."

In Hirst's installation, the butterflies create art of their own. The pupae pinned to the boards develop into butterflies and hatch out. In breaking out of their delicate chrysalises – naturally coloured in cream, gold and pink – they deposit fluids that drip down the boards. Some visitors wonder if this is butterfly blood.

Is it cruel? Hirst's butterflies are common tropical species, such as the  owl butterfly and the heliconius , a family of striking broad-winged butterflies. These are supplied by Luke Brown , who also tends to the butterflies in the Natural History Museum's annual butterfly house , and are chosen for their colours, longevity and ability to survive on rotting fruit in a humid room. If some people find that cruel, it is at least no more cruel than farming pigs in a barn with plenty of straw. There is some unethical and illegal trade in rare butterflies, but reputable breeders such as Brown source pupae from the Philippines and Costa Rica, where this cottage industry provides useful local employment.

Two weeks into the exhibition, and Hirst's butterfly room is a slightly less than perfect cycle. The pupae have all hatched now and a security guard tells me that the live butterflies in the room are actually brought in every day by Brown. In the gift shop, there is another small disappointment: Hirst is a genius at commodifying his art and there are butterfly prints (£30,150 for an unframed print in a limited edition of 50), butterfly deckchairs (£310) and a butterfly umbrella. This has butterflies on its underside, which reminds me of the brilliant butterfly obsessive Matthew Oates, who pins paper butterflies to the interior roof of his car. Butterflies belong in our firmaments. Unfortunately, Hirst's umbrella costs a staggering £195.

Apart from their rich association with childhood, butterflies are symbols of freedom, the embodiment of living life to the full. In many cultures they represent human souls; in medieval Ireland, white butterflies were thought to be dead children; white butterflies have also been discovered fluttering in the cells of recently executed Tibetan monks. Butterflies represent escape – and death (something of an obsession for Hirst) is the ultimate release. When they performed a free gig in London's Hyde Park in 1969, the Rolling Stones set free thousands of white butterflies as a tribute to Brian Jones, who had died two days before.

Even if being confined to a room in Tate Modern is a melancholy prospect, Hirst's butterflies encourage us to reflect on how ephemeral life is for every insect – and for their human spectators.

Damien Hirst Butterfly Bike

Lance is riding the Damien Hirst bike into Paris. Nicknamed the Butterfly Bike, the specially-decaled Madone is part of the Stages series of bikes. Lance has ridden Art Bikes from Stages all year and will auction them with the proceeds benefiting Livestrong .

We posted on the Butterfly earlier in le Tour. This Art Bike is proving controversial with animal rights activists complaining about the dead butterflies used on the bike .

In the past, Damien Hirst has suspended a shark in formaldehyde.

Lance may be getting a little more attention than he wants from this bike, the Trek Madone he rode in the final stage of the 2009 Tour de France.  Designed by controversial artist Damien Hirst, the butterfly wings on it are real, and this has animal rights activists up in arms .

Citing “horrific barbarity” over the use of dead butterfly wings, Sam Glover of PETA said this “ruined the very essence of this (Armstrong’s) spirit.”

Hirst said he was approached by U2 singer Bono to make the bicycle and that he (Hirst) wanted to use real butterfly wings because of the way they shimmer in the light.  He said Armstrong “loves it.”

This bike, along with the other custom designed frames (See Exhibits A ,  B ,  C ,  D , E and F ) are on exhibit at Stages09 through mid-August.  They will be auctioned off in October to raise money for Livestrong’s anti-cancer programs.

This isn’t Hirst’s first occurrence of shocking people’s sensibilities.  In 1992 he suspended a full size shark in formaldehyde, followed by his diamond-encrusted human skull.

what’s wrong with using the wings of dead butterflies? People have been doing this for centuries with jewelry, stationery and all sorts of things. PETA needs to stay focused on helping things that NEED their help.

Ride on, Lance.

Hart

If I was Armstrong I would be ashamed to be associated with such a sick individual as Hirst. But then again, Armstrong had no problem schooming it up at photo ops with war criminal George W Bush.

Will-i-am Intelligent

I am going to start an organization called PN2GAC. People Need To Get A Clue. Has it really come to this? Really? Now DEAD bugs need to be protected? After reading Hart’s comment, I can see why it didn’t leave a last name. I bet you don’t even HUG trees for fear that you might make them uncomfortable with your advances. “We now return you to regularly scheduled reality- try and keep up”.

wunnspeed

People (the protesters)….. get over yourselves…. PLEASE! If you’ve got an issue with things going on with the world, do something REAL about it. Granted, if it were live butterflies, it might be considered bad for many. However, they’re F-in dead. To me, when I’m dead, anyone can take pretty much whatever they want off my corpse as long as it helps other people. Live what you believe man!

Spiv

I don’t know a thing about Hirst, but I do know peta. They’re attention whores, whose sole purpose is to drum up their own namesake over every ridiculous thing they can. They constantly send out letters to every imaginable cause (remember when they sent out one to Pet Shop Boys trying to get them to change their name because it contained the word “pet?”), just hoping they get a bite. The media really should learn to just ignore them. It’s about money, not animals. If it’s high profile and mentions anything animal (or insect) related, expect a letter or phone call from these parasites.

Dear PETA: Butterflies live for a matter of days or weeks. When I’m done with this carcass I hope someone can find a good use for it. Even if it’s just to fertilize the daisies.

dee

if anyone did a small amount of research, you may have found out that these are freshly emerged butterflies and are killed for the “artwork.” so yes, they are dead, because of hirst and the people who pay him. i wonder where he got that white horse.

Trek Madone - Butterfly

Updated: Aug 20, 2020

This bicycle has hit the charts of 'The world's most expensive bike'. Designed by Damien Hirst and produced by Trek this shows the magnificence of true art. This masterpiece was sold for pocket- burning $500,000 at Sotheby's auction, accordingly, it became the world's supreme priced bike. According to many sources, Hirst expended natural butterfly wings to place it on the chassis as well as the rims of this bike; this may be an apparent explanation to its price tag.

trek madone butterfly damien hirst

It was only ridden formally once at 2009 Tour de France by Lance Armstrong. Honestly, the cycle isn't about the specifications but the artistic aesthetics, actually even to authenticate the return of Lance Armstrong. As Armstrong's autobiography title goes that 'It's Not About the Bike'; Ultimately.

2023 TREK MADONE SLR BREAKS NEW GROUND

Isoflow is in, and isospeed is out..

trek madone butterfly damien hirst

It’s a funny thing how some random, little known and relatively short French mountain road can be thrusted into cycling history as much as the Col du Madone has been. The story is well told. Though the road had been there for years, it wasn’t until Lance Armstrong discovered it and convinced Trek Bicycles to name his new bike in its honor as it was his own personal training ride that proved he was in winning shape for the 2003 Tour de France.

Despite what the record books say, the Trek Madone enjoyed repeated wins in the Tour de France. In the years since riders like Lance and George Hincapie raced the bike, the Madone has carried on its winning ways under a variety of guises and great riders.

For the 2022 Tour de France, Trek is unveiling what is likely its most radical version of the Madone ever.  Gone is the Isospeed suspension and the blocky, Transformer-like frame shape of old with something called IsoFlow bringing a wild aero development to the frame.  Below is everything we know about the Gen 7 Madone so far.  0

BUT FIRST A TREK MADONE GALLERY

trek madone butterfly damien hirst

BACK IN THE DAY MADONE MOMENTS

2003 Trek Madone powers Armstrong to his record-tying 5th straight Tour win. 2004 Rewrite the record books. Trek and Lance Armstrong dominate the Tour de France with his 6th consecutive victory aboard a Project One Madone SL with Bontrager wheels. 2004 The U.S. Postal team enjoy their most successful year ever aboard the Trek Madone 5.9. 2004 Trek engineers unveil the lightest production OCLV frame ever, the 950-gram OCLV 55 which is used by Lance in three stages of the Dauphine Libere’. Special prototype Bontrager wheels, also using new 55GSM OCLV carbon fiber, are used by Lance in the Tour de France.

trek madone butterfly damien hirst

Here’s a complete look back on the Trek Madone.

BUT WAIT, WHAT ABOUT THE NEW MADONE?

Gen 7 madone tech notes.

  • Six models to choose from
  • 300-gram weight savings over the previous Gen 6 version
  • Five colorways plus Project One options
  • 28mm max tire size
  • Electronic drivetrain dedicated
  • 14 different length/width handlebar/stem options
  • 3mm flare to one-piece Bontrager handlebar
  • Removable front derailleur hanger
  • T47 bottom bracket
  • (claimed) frame weight is “sub-1000 grams”
  • 2 different length seat posts w/ 2 different setback
  • H1.5 geometry

Trek launched the all-new Madone SLR, topping off their performance bike line-up with their fastest road race bike ever. Seven generations in the making, the Madone SLR is the ultimate race bike, complete with never-before-seen IsoFlow technology, dramatic aerodynamic improvements and an all-new gram-shaving design.

This completely redesigned race bike will be ridden by the Trek-Segafredo men’s and women’s teams at the biggest events on the cycling calendar, including the 2022 Tour de France and the first-ever Tour de France Femmes.

trek madone butterfly damien hirst

Unprecedented aerodynamics

The new Madone SLR is a whopping 60 seconds per hour faster than the previous generation (measured at 45 km/h) thanks to all-new aero frame shaping, a redesigned bar/stem and a more aero riding position.

trek madone butterfly damien hirst

Revolutionary IsoFlow technology

IsoFlow is a first-of-its-kind seat tube technology that flexes over bumps for a smoother ride, improves aerodynamics and shaves weight to save precious seconds in the saddle.

Lighter than ever

A new lightweight design and Trek’s best and lightest OCLV Carbon make the seventh-generation Madone the lightest Madone disc ever, shaving 300 grams off the previous ultra-lightweight version.

trek madone butterfly damien hirst

Refined integration

An all-new one-piece bar/stem and integrated IsoFlow seat tube technology take Madone’s unrivaled integration to the next level. An all-new bar/stem with 3cm of flare and shorter reach offers improved ergonomics and aerodynamics. Riders who use a 42cm bar/stem will now be a 42cm in the drops and 39cm in the hoods, reducing rider drag while allowing for powerful sprints.
