Rise Against Announce Summer 2022 Tour With The Used + Senses Fail

UPDATE Rise Against also added new European tour dates for the fall.

Rise Against will take out The Used and Senses Fail for one of the more solid rock lineups of the summer. Rise Against will serve as headliners on the run, supporting their 2021 album, Nowhere Generation.

The tour gets underway June 15 in Las Vegas, continuing on for just over a month before it winds down Aug. 18 in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Dates, cities and venues can be seen below. Band pre-sales start tomorrow (March 1) at 10AM local time, with the local pre-sales following on Wednesday, March 2 at 10AM local time and the general public on-sale beginning this Friday (March 4) at 10AM local time. Head to Rise Against's website for ticketing details.

Rise Against are hitting the road with what is mostly viewed as an uptick in their career, with Nowhere Generation yielding four singles - "Broken Dreams, Inc.," "Nowhere Generation," "The Numbers" and "Talking to Ourselves" - and later spinning off a Nowhere Sessions EP.

The band has also just released a new synth-driven remix of "Talking to Ourselves" done by IDLES. Speaking about the track, singer Tim McIlrath stated, “I’ve never thought of our songs as ‘brave' or ‘bold,' I think of them as just common sense. When you feel that no one is listening to you, you tend to talk louder, and when you feel no one notices you, you start doing things to get their attention. That’s what this song is about.”

In addition, this past week singer Tim McIlrath hopped on a new cover from AWOLNATION , helping singer Aaron Bruno and his band perform Midnight Oil's '80s hit, "Beds Are Burning."  “I’ve known Aaron (@awolnation) for years now and am such a big fan of this song, so I was really excited to be a part of his band's remake of 'Beds Are Burning,'" stated McIlrath , then adding , "Even today, there are those who would rather ignore the parts of our past that make us uncomfortable than confront and teach them to the next generation. Midnight Oil’s message resonates today as much as it ever did, if not even more.”

Check out the cover below:

The Used's most recent album was 2020's Heartwork . "We are beyond excited to announce that we will be touring with our longtime friends and partners in crime, Rise Against," stated the group via their socials. Fans of The Used will want to take a closer look at the itinerary as there are four dates the band will not be a part of the bill.

And completing the lineup are Senses Fail, who underwent a little bit of controversy while deciding to take the tour. They just canceled their spring headline run with We Came as Romans, Counterparts and SeeYouSpaceCowboy before taking the newly announced summer dates.

In doing so, the band's Buddy Nielsen  issued a statement  detailing the reasoning for the touring change, pointing to supply chain issues delaying the release of their new album to July and noting that he and his wife were expecting a child early next month.

While the Hell Is In Your Head album has been pushed back, the band is continuing to release music with "I'm Sorry I'm Leaving" being the latest song to arrive in advance of the album. Neilsen says of the track, heard below,  ‘"I wrote this song about the constant struggling with making music and art as a living. I am constantly waiting for it to all fail and disappear even 20 years into a career. At no point do I ever feel safe. After having a child, the relationship with this lifestyle became more strained. Having to leave home and lose time with your child while also hoping that what you do continues to support your family and remains fulfilling is complicated. Continuing to improve and remove my own trauma in order to be a better father is the bases and goal of the song."

RISE AGAINST 's latest album, "Nowhere Generation" , saw its title track, No. 1 Rock-charting hit earn various spots on Billboard 's Year-End Charts for radio airplay, including No. 4 at Mainstream Rock Songs and No. 5 at Rock Airplay Songs, as well as iHeartRadio 's No. 10 most played Alternative song in 2021. The band was also Billboard 's No. 9 most-played artist on rock radio in 2021, alongside Billie Eilish , FOO FIGHTERS and more.

On "Nowhere Generation" , the multi-gold and platinum band draws a line in the sand with its blazing and aggressive punk rock and lyrics that shine a spotlight on the social and economical deck that has been stacked against our younger generations' pursuit of The American Dream. The album debuted at the top of multiple Billboard charts with its first week sales (No. 1 on Rock, No. 3 on Top Current Albums, No. 3 on Vinyl, and the Top 40 of the Top 200),and earned great press from outlets, including Revolver , Consequence , Loudwire , Brooklyn Vegan , Grammy.com , American Songwriter, The Line Of Best Fit , Clash and Kerrang! , among others. The album's June 4, 2021, release date was also declared "Rise Against Day" in Chicago, the band's original hometown.

Last November, RISE AGAINST shared the "Nowhere Sessions" EP, a six-track live expansion of the album that captures and celebrates the anthemic intensity of the band's renowned performances. Singles from the EP included "Talking To Ourselves (Nowhere Sessions)" and a cover of CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL 's "Fortunate Son" .

Rise Against Nowhere Generation Tour 2021

Rise Against , The Used, and Senses Fail are hitting the road together this summer. The trek kicks off on July 17 in Las Vegas, NV and wraps up on August 18 in Detroit, MI. Pre-sale begins Tuesday, March 1 at 10am local time using password NOWHEREGENERATION at  https://riseagainst.com . Public on sale begins Friday, March 4 at 10am local time.

Check out the full tour itinerary below.

Rise Against returned to the road last summer with their Nowhere Generation Tour. The run was in support of their ninth studio album which dropped last June via Loma Vista Recordings. It is the band’s first LP since 2017’s  Wolves . The new album performed well commercially out of the gate, peaking at No. 39 on the Billboard 200, No. 4 on Billboard Top Rock Albums, and No. 2 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums chart.

The Used

The Used released their eighth studio album Heartwork in 2020 via Big Noise Music Group. It was their first release on the label. With plenty of material left over from the recording sessions, The Used plan on releasing another LP in the near future.

Senses Fail

Senses Fail have been working hard on a new studio album. Their forthcoming LP Hell Is In Your Head is slated for release on July 15, the day the tour begins. Their last effort – 2018’s If There Is Light, It Will Find You – hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums Chart.

rise against the used tour

Now that co-headlining tours are the norm , it was only natural for The Used and Rise Against to team up at the Santa Barbara Bowl on Saturday, July 16. The disaffected grown adults convened under the glare of blazing sun – and the struggles of being alternative in the summer were felt in this largely black-clad crowd. Thankfully, this lineup packed “so many power chords in one tour,” as Reddit user lethalred put it .

Senses Fail

rise against the used tour

But it wasn’t just a two-fer, as post-hardcore veterans Senses Fail opened the concert with showmanship in spades. Whatever your thoughts on how they ended up on this ticket, they owned old reliables like “Lady in a Blue Dress” and “Can’t Be Saved,” while edging into a rollicking snippet for Rage Against the Machine’s “Bulls on Parade” at closing.

This was The Used’s first stop on the tour – which technically started in Las Vegas the previous night – and they wielded their hooks of yore with deft precision. The post-hardcore titans had those fan faves on deck as the hooks on “I Caught Fire” and “The Taste of Ink” hit as hard as ever. But the hourlong setlist also made way for new-ish tracks like 2019’s “Blow Me,” complete with a death metal breakdown.

Frontman Bert McCracken’s voice still had the scream wattage cranked up in patches, although bassist Jeph Howard and guitarist Joey Bradford did come through with the supplementary growls. On standout “The Bird and the Worm,” it’s no wonder that with only four members on stage, the band ripped out the orchestral guts for a more concise, sludgier rendition.

As the “NO Moshing” sign loomed ahead of the GA area, McCracken orchestrated a two-line split in the pit while declaring, “At a metal show, we call this the wall of death, but since we’re an emo band, we call this the wall of love!” The parted seas did, in fact, run at each other like a pack of wild animals as the opening riff of “Pretty Handsome Awkward” blared. The Lies for the Liars cut swaddled in metal trappings, drummer Dan Whitesides went chopper mode with the double bass drums of death while Howard rumbled out those guttural low notes.

Then the circle pit took the semblance of a miniature track meet while McCracken recited a soliloquy from Hamlet – as he is wont to do . At this point, the Used launched into a “Smells Like Teen Spirit” lead-in that faded into “A Box Full of Sharp Objects” then morphed back into a medley with the Nirvana classic. It’s safe to say there was no butt-rock here … only “Buttsex Is Itchy” tees .

Rise Against

rise against the used tour

Fog ensnares the stage as the sound system flips through soundbites from stories about refugees. It has the dramatic heft of a blockbuster movie as the members of Rise Against run on stage and waste no time launching into “Prayer of the Refugee,” which they volley into a start-stop dynamic between the verses and chorus.

That economic use of time is embedded in the punk stalwarts’ discog – which is littered with BPMs that scrape the 190s. In other words, they play fast .

By the time “Satellite” rolled around, it felt like the Chicago-formed outfit had moved the Overton Window on the soft-loud dynamic by rendering it loud .. and extra loud. Then came the breakdown that swung back around to a walloping reprise with a speakerphone monologue courtesy of frontman Tim McIlrath.

For their third time at the Bowl, RA filled the setlist with the crowd pleasers. “Give It All” equated to pop-punk adjacent bliss, while “Ready to Fall” packed a punch with that “standing on the rooftop” hook. Then there was “Survive,” a stronghold of killer fretwork brought to life by guitarist Zach Blair’s stuttered riffs.

But it’s not a Rise Against show without politics. Ahead of “Collapse (Post-Amerika),” McIlrath delivered a speech on what a revolution is not , listing the forms of bigotry not accepted in the fight for progress. “I’m here to tell you that you’re in the wrong fucking revolution with that shit,” he said. Their gospel of leftism took the form of heavy riffs, mic swinging, and plenty of head banging in an athletic command of the stage. For 20 years, the band has been performing, as the frontman said, “songs about change, songs about awareness, songs about family” – and they’re not stopping now.

Rise Against shared " Talking To Ourselves (IDLES Inner Monologue Remix) ," a pulsing, synth-driven, transformative re-working by British band IDLES, which maintains the urgency of the standout original off the band’s 2021 acclaimed LP, Nowhere Generation (Loma Vista Recordings). “I’ve never thought of our songs as ‘brave' or ‘bold,'” says bandleader Tim McIlrath. “I think of them as just common sense. When you feel that no one is listening to you, you tend to talk louder, and when you feel no one notices you, you start doing things to get their attention. That’s what this song is about.”

Nowhere Generation saw its title track, #1 Rock-charting hit earn various spots on Billboard ’s Year-End Charts for radio airplay, including #4 at Mainstream Rock Songs and #5 at Rock Airplay Songs, as well as iHeartRadio’s #10 most played Alternative song in 2021. The band was also Billboard ’s #9 most-played artist on rock radio in 2021, alongside Billie Eilish, Foo Fighters, and more.

On Nowhere Generation , the multi-Gold and Platinum band draws a line in the sand with its blazing and aggressive punk rock and lyrics that shine a spotlight on the social and economical deck that has been stacked against our younger generations’ pursuit of The American Dream. The album debuted at the top of multiple Billboard charts with its first week sales (#1 on Rock, #3 on Top Current Albums, #3 on Vinyl, and the Top 40 of the Top 200), and earned great press from outlets including Revolver , Consequence , LoudWire , Brooklyn Vegan , Grammy.com , American Songwriter , The Line of Best Fit , Clash , and Kerrang! , among others. The album’s June 4, 2021 release date was also declared “Rise Against Day In Chicago,” the band’s original hometown. Last November, Rise Against shared the Nowhere Sessions EP , a six-track live expansion of the album that captures and celebrates the anthemic intensity of the band’s renowned performances. Singles from the EP included " Talking to Ourselves (Nowhere Sessions) " and a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s " Fortunate Son ."

Over the past week, students at dozens of universities held demonstrations, set up encampments and, at times, seized academic buildings. In response, administrators at many of those colleges decided to crack down and called in the local police to detain and arrest demonstrators.

As of Thursday, the police had arrested 2,000 people across more than 40 campuses, a situation so startling that President Biden could no longer ignore it.

Jonathan Wolfe, who has been covering the student protests for The Times, and Peter Baker, the chief White House correspondent, discuss the history-making week.

Background reading

As crews cleared the remnants of an encampment at U.C.L.A., students and faculty members wondered how the university could have handled protests over the war in Gaza so badly .

Biden denounced violence on campus , breaking his silence after a rash of arrests.

‘Total Disgrace’: Anger, Frustration as Mass Heating Failures Across Russia Leave Thousands in the Cold

PODOLSK, Moscow region – Residents across Russia affected by unprecedented winter heating outages in recent days have expressed their growing frustration and urged local authorities to restore heating in their homes.

In Podolsk, a town some 30 kilometers south of the capital Moscow, at least 149,000 residents — nearly half of its population — were left in the cold when a heating main burst at a nearby private ammunition plant.

“It’s a total disgrace. There is no heating and no hot water. We have to sleep in sleeping bags,” Yuri, a local resident, told The Moscow Times.

“I have no words to describe how bad the situation is," said Yuri, who declined to provide his surname. "We have had no heating for almost six days."

The Moscow region, where temperatures have plunged to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius in the past week, as well as the Far East Primorye region , the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg , Penza , the southern Voronezh and Volgograd regions and others, have all been affected by heating outages this winter.

In the Tver region, a group of residents filmed an appeal to President Vladimir Putin, saying that they “are freezing from the cold” in the village of Novozavidovsky.

“We're literally being killed by the cold,” a woman in the video said, adding that they have been sending requests to local authorities since September after their houses were connected to a boiler room whose power was reportedly insufficient.

“This is some kind of torture and extermination of the population 100 kilometers from Moscow,” she added.

Residents of the Moscow region town of Elektrostal lit a fire in the street to draw the authorities’ attention to the heating problem.

“It’s impossible to stay in our houses. We're freezing!” a group of women in the video said.

Suffering from subzero temperatures, residents are placing the blame on local authorities and utility services for failing to take necessary precautions and not taking action to resolve the situation.

“We are sending complaints everywhere but no one listens to us. We have portable heaters working in every room, but the temperature inside is still 10 degrees Celsius,” Yelena from Podolsk said.

“There is a clinic and a hospital, as well as kindergartens, where there is no heating. And we have no answers, no assistance, no explanation,” Yelena added.

Placing the blame

Podolsk authorities opened temporary heating centers and declared a state of emergency.

Local authorities linked the heating problems to the fact that the town is heated by a boiler plant owned by the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant, a private ammunition factory and one of the largest weapon cartridge production enterprises in the country.

“The facility is under tight security conditions, which limits our ability to oversee winter preparations,” the Moscow region’s Vice Governor Yevgeny Khromushin said last week. “We were unaware of the problem for nearly a day.”

An unidentified Moscow region official and two senior executives at the plant were arrested on suspicion of providing unsafe services, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said  Tuesday.

Investigators said that Podolsk’s deputy mayor was accused of misusing authority by issuing a readiness certificate for the boiler house at the plant.

In the neighboring Tver region, authorities opened a criminal case over the laundering of over 84 million rubles ($938,993) in residents' heating bills, the Astra Telegram channel reported this week, citing unidentified sources. Investigators claim the heads of the local water intake and boiler house misappropriated the payments for personal use.

Reacting to the heating failures, Putin on Tuesday asked Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov to provide heat and electricity to the affected residents.

The outages appear to be the latest effect of several decades of crumbling infrastructure, which has been linked to endemic corruption and mismanagement.

The overall decay of Russia's municipal infrastructure surpassed 70% in 2022, the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia reported .

According to Sergei Pakhomov, head of the State Duma’s Construction, Housing and Utilities Committee, water pipes that were 90 years old or even older were still in use as recently as two years ago in some cases.

Housing, utilities and communal services are a common source of problems for Russians during the winter.

In St. Petersburg,  extensive ice coverage on city streets and sidewalks is a chronic source of  complaints , with many people ending up in the hospital over the years due to slipping and falling accidents.

In the Siberian republic of Khakassia, two villages were left without electricity last month due to apparent issues with outdated infrastructure.

In the winter of 2020, five people in the Perm region were killed after a pipe burst.

When asked about the latest heating outages, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the problems and linked them to poor municipal infrastructure, saying that people “had to endure a lot of inconvenience in the cold and without electricity.”

"Despite all the titanic efforts to update all housing and communal services systems, there's still a certain part that remains considerably deteriorated. These programs will continue, but it is impossible to update all pipes and all housing and communal services systems in 10-15 years,” Peskov said.

As for now, those affected by heating issues appear to lack optimism that the problems will be solved efficiently.

"It's been a week since we've had heating, and the temperature in my apartment is around 11 degrees Celsius,” Podolsk resident Lidiya told The Moscow Times.

“Unfortunately, no one knows when it will be repaired,” she said.
