Inside Paris-Roubaix with Trek-Segafredo’s roadside “bidon guys”

How do teams handle the chaos and crush of a race like Paris-Roubaix? With a lot of extra help.

As you watch Paris-Roubaix this weekend, you’ll undoubtedly notice the constant presence of team personnel on the roadside. At every sector, the moto camera will flash past men wearing team jerseys or jackets, standing on the side of the cobbled lanes and holding a pair of wheels aloft. When the helicopter camera zooms in as riders exit each round of cobbles, more assistants will appear, eagerly proffering water bottles with gels taped to them, often with more wheels at their feet.

Sector after sector this repeats: 29 times for the men, 17 for the women. WorldTour teams have, on average, about 75 staffers total. Right now, they have teams at both the cobbled Classics and in Spain at the Itzulia stage race. So you might wonder: even if they pulled every available body – mechanics and soigneurs, sure, but also operations staff, doctors, even the chef – where the heck do they find enough people? How do they seem to appear at every crucial spot on the course? Luc Meersman knows.

trek segafredo bidon

Meersman, an assistant director with Trek-Segafredo, has been painstakingly planning the logistics of this small army of helpers since shortly after New Year’s. “Ah yes, my “bidon guys!” he says when I call to ask about this crucial behind-the-scenes element. While a number of other teams approach Classics logistics similarly, for Trek this is a Meersman specialty, a labor of love.

The bidon guys are volunteers, not staff. They’re mostly friends of Meersman’s; he’s from Tielt, in the heart of Flanders, so he has many friends to call on. He was a Classics style racer himself during his career in the early 1980s, who rode alongside guys like Claude Criquelion and the Planckaert brothers, and podiumed at Gent-Wevelgem and le Samyn.

Just after January 1 every year, Meersman looks at the race schedule and starts to text the bidon guys. “We need a lot of help for the Classics,” he says, not just Roubaix but the Flemish races too. “In total I have 18 guys who come to help us, and in the beginning of the year I make a schedule and a forecast of [which races] we need three cars or one, and I ask the guys if they can come those days or not.”

trek segafredo bidon

Flanders takes five cars, or 15 of the 18 possible helpers. Roubaix takes six cars, all the bodies. For the two days of racing, Trek-Segafredo will prep 400 bottles for handups from the team cars, by soigneurs at the official feed zones, and from the bidon guys. Mechanics build 21 bikes, and 14 extra sets of wheels to distribute to the two follow cars and the bidon guys. The team doesn’t pay the guys for their help. But unsurprisingly, everybody is available for Flanders and Roubaix.

Everybody has a role, says Meersman. You need a good driver, of course, although speed isn’t the name of the game, exactly. “The most important is the guy next to the driver, who says, ‘Here we go left and on the roundabout we go right and over the bridge,’ or whatever.” It’s almost like rally racing: “You can be a good driver, but if you take the wrong road, you’re wrong.” In the back, No. 3 stages all the stuff for the feed and makes sure the wheels are ready to go and probably tries not to get motion sick.

The driving and navigating is important because – I’m not sure if you noticed – there are 29 sectors of cobbles for the men and 17 for the women and only six cars full of bidon guys. “We do 34 spots with six cars,” says Meersman – some important sectors get teams in the middle and at the end. Some teams hit as many as six different spots in the race, leapfrogging across the course as it zig-zags around, madly trying to jump ahead. “But for some of these guys they can’t do that many because you’re in the middle of [Arenberg] forest,” adds Meersman, and it takes longer to get in and out. “And then you have to go to two more long sections, always in the middle. It’s a hell of a job to get there.”

Meersman tells the crews not to speed; there are too many spectators on the road, too much risk. The cars all get accreditation stickers, but as anyone who’s driven a race can tell you, even that doesn’t always get a friendly wave onto the course from police. “If they say no, then you gotta turn back 180 degrees and go somewhere else, try a different spot,” he says.

trek segafredo bidon

Which might be the truest strength of the bidon guys: just as Meersman does a course recon with the riders, one of the bidon guys does his own recon. On a nice March day, he takes the course map, puts his mountain bike on the car and drives around, looking for shortcuts and back routes that can get the teams between sectors more quickly. Does that gravel lane go through or does it dead-end in some farm field? Is Google maps correct when it shows a road? The bidon guys know. “Sometimes it’s unbelievable where they drive across,” Meersman says with a laugh.

Still, they don’t always get there, and Meersman has to tell the riders that a particular sector isn’t staffed. But almost always, they do, and when the race passes, they spring into action. At the end of sectors, the job is mostly to hand up bottles, which sounds simple except the racers are sprinting at 30 mph trying to catch back on, and you’re leaning out into the course so they see you, trying to peer through the dust and find your riders, while not getting run over by a moto or causing a crash.

trek segafredo bidon

Mid-sector, the bidon guys are mostly watching for mechanicals and crashes. “Some of the guys can put [spare] wheels in the bike and I have some guys who cannot,” says Meersman, especially with disc brakes and through axles. If a rider needs a wheel, the assistant will either tell them he can handle the change, or he’ll just hand them the wheel. “There’s never a discussion,” says Meersman; the riders are always just happy to have a wheel.

trek segafredo bidon

When the race passes, the teams don’t always immediately hustle to the car. Roubaix is the most chaotic race on the calendar; it’s impossible for teams to keep track of what’s going on at every point. Meersman is, like always, in Team Car 1, right behind the race, and each of the crews is equipped with a short-range walkie-talkie to give him a quick report.

Even that has a protocol. Meersman, after all, is dealing with multiple communication channels: official race radio, a radio channel to the riders and other cars and team staff, and trying to track the race as best he can. “If they all talk at the same time, you hear nothing,” says Meersman. So they wait for his prompt, “and only then they know they can talk.” Each of the teams has a simple stopwatch to take time gaps. “Sometimes the race organization is not so accurate, so if Mads Pedersen is in front, I ask the guys what is the time gap to the group behind, who is there, and where are the other guys?” The bidon guys also send Meersman updates via group chat, which is especially helpful as advance scouting for course conditions that may have changed since recon day.

trek segafredo bidon

Inevitably, things will go wrong: instead of getting to a sector 10 minutes before the race passes, a car of bidon guys will be 10 seconds too late. Maybe the communications won’t go smoothly. And for the past two years, the workload has doubled, because the team has provided the same support to its female riders.

It makes for a long weekend for Meersman. “It’s a lot of work preparing all that shit,” he says, laughing. But it’s worth it. The women’s team, after all, has won both editions of Paris-Roubaix Femmes so far and are strong contenders for a third straight. The men bring a team bookended by Pedersen, third at last week’s Tour of Flanders, and Jasper Stuyven, three times a top-10 finisher at Roubaix. A win, if it comes, wouldn’t be possible without the bidon guys. If it comes, they’ll celebrate over a beer, and in eight months, Meersman will break out the schedule and start texting the guys: “Hey, what’s April looking like for you?”

Trek Segafredo unveils 2022 pro race team kits, bikes and gear

The Trek Segafredo team just got back from training camp, and by the looks of it, they are ready to hit the races.

Trek Segafredo cataldo climb

For the 2022 season, the Trek Segafredo World Tour teams (men’s and women’s) will be on familiar equipment, with little to no changes in componentry over the last year. The team will ride the Trek Madone for most races, Trek Emonda for the hillier courses, and Trek Domane for events like Paris Roubaix, Liège–Bastogne–Liège, and other classics as riders see fit. The team will be on the trusted Trek Speed Concept for the time trials, a bike that Trek Factory Racing and Trek Segafredo helped craft into its world championship-winning form.

Trek Segafredo decent

Componentry will be all Bontrager, and really — we don’t see a problem with that. The Bontrager Aelous RSL wheels are some of the fastest, best feeling wheels we tested last year, and it says a lot that the tubeless setup is good enough for the World Tour. The team has the choice between many depths of wheels; for climbing stages — Aeolus 37 , for the classic and daily chores — Aeolus 51 , and for cheating the wind — Aeolus 62 .

Trek Segafredo Ciccone out of the saddle

Bars and stem combo range from Bontrager’s new RSL Aeolus one-piece combo to RSL stems and various bars for different terrain. Most will go with Bontrager’s ISOCore VR bar for the extra padding in the classics like Paris Roubaix.

Trek Segafredo Ragot in gravel

Each member chooses what saddle fits them the best after consulting with the Trek Precision Fit crew. Most of the team will be using the Bontrager Aeolus saddle — designed for an aggressive aero position. The Aeolus is Bontrager’s first entry into the short nose power-style saddles and quickly became popular among the World Tour teams.

Trek Segafredo Cordon Ragot near team car

The team will ride exclusively on Pirelli tires, both tubeless and tubular. The go-to model for the team is the Pirelli P Zero TLR , and P Zero tubular. Trek is one of the few World Tour teams leaning toward tubeless rather than tubular, and Pirelli plays a significant role in this decision. Pirelli has worked with Trek-Segafredo riders for the last two years to test and improve their products and help the team perform at the world level. Pirelli’s tubeless tire P Zero TLR, piloted under Lizzie Deignan, was ridden the first-ever victory of Paris-Roubaix Femmes.

Trek Segafredo Longo Borghini decending

SRAM provides the shifting, braking, and power meters for the Trek Segafredo crew. The team will ride the SRAM Red components for all races and training, taking advantage of the wide range of the groupset. As for power measuring needs, the team will use the Quarg Red AXS Power meters .

Trek Segafredo Egholm

Bontrager is the helmet and footwear supplier for the Trek Segafedo team. They will race both the Ballista and the Bontrager XXX shoes . For helmets, the rider will have the choice of the Velocis helmet or the Bontrager XXX Wavecel, depending on race conditions.

Trek and Segafredo: Behind the combination of bikes and coffee

Three-year sponsorship gives the team a bigger budget and a new direction

The Trek-Segafredo sponsorship seemed like a perfect marriage between two important global brands at the presentation in Treviso on Thursday.

  • Segafredo deal will allow Trek to fill hole left by Cancellara's retirement in 2017

The US-registered team and the global coffee company share the same red, white and black brand colours, and both Trek and Massimo Zanetti’s holding company - which owns Segafredo and several other coffee brands, each started as family businesses.

Trek started in a barn in Waterloo, Wisconsin, while Massimo Zanetti, now 67, took over the family-owned coffee roasting business in Treviso in the early 70s. Via a series of takeovers, tie-ups and franchises, the company has grown to become one of the biggest in the world, producing 92,000 tonnes of coffee a year, with a turnover of 1.3 billion Euro. 35 per cent of the company was recently floated on the Milan stock market in 2015, raising over 200 million Euro and valuing the company at close to 540 million Euro ($615 million).

Zanetti proudly announced the Segafredo cycling sponsorship during a meeting with global brand managers. Many are cyclists and welcomed the news, pushing to pose for selfies with Fabian Cancellara and the new jersey. Segafredo is the first major Italian company to sponsor a cycling team for several years, with many in Italian cycling hoping it will open the door to other new sponsors after years of crisis.

“I’ve been lucky in life. Now I hope to give some good luck to the Trek-Segafredo team,” Zanetti said during the presentation. “I’m a man of sport. My father taught us all to love sport and practiced a lot of sport. I live in the province of Treviso, where highest number of people in Italy ride bikes.”

Zanetti confirmed to Cyclingnews that the brand will remain a co-title sponsor with team owners Trek for the next three years, with an option for a further two years. The arrival of Segafredo will boost the team’s budget by between 30 and 40 per cent, and allow the signing of a Grand Tour team leader and perhaps a Classics contender to replace Fabian Cancellara. Both Peter Sagan and Greg Van Avermaet could be available for 2017.

Zanetti opted to join forces with Trek rather than create a new team with Bjarne Riis .

“We were negotiating with Riis after he’d left Tinkoff, to create our own new team. But we didn’t want to be directly involved in the management of the team At the same time, we spoke to Luca Guercilena at Trek. We realised we had the best fit with Trek, and things went from there,” he revealed.

“I love cycling and ride at the weekends, but we’ve also got to think of the business aspects and the return on investment. I’m convinced that cycling gives a good return. Cycling is one of the most popular sports in the world and is followed by millions of fans, who will now hopefully drink our coffee.”

“Our project is to help the team grow as a global team and sign some of the biggest riders in the peloton. It’s true that we’d like to sign Nibali. Let's hope so. It’d be a dream come true for me.”

Long term backing, a bigger budget and possibly a new direction

Zanetti and the Vice President of Trek Bicycles Joe Vadeboncoeur completed the deal to form Trek-Segafredo with a handshake. While Trek has given up being the sole title sponsor of the team, it has gained some long-term backing and secured a bigger budget.

“Segafredo’s sponsorship doesn’t double the budget, but it’s significant. More than the investment, it’s the duration that is important," Vadeboncoeur told Cyclingnews. "They’re in for the long term, which allows us to target the team in different directions. Fabian Cancellara’s contract ends in 2016 and so after that, we have the option to point in a different direction if we choose to. If we want to chase Grand Tours after 2016 now were able to do that.”

Vadeboncoeur is not afraid to admit that Nibali is on their list of riders for 2017.

“He’s a huge talent, a great rider and has a lot of years left in his career. He’s Italian, and so Segafredo would like it. We would like it, and Luca has a good relationship with him,” he said. “At the moment, we don’t know if he’s going separate from his current team after 2016, but I think it would be fun to build a squad around him.”

Zanetti is expecting some important results in 2016 before the team is somehow rebuilt and redirected after Cancellara’s career ends. Cancellara won the 1999 Junior world time trial title in Treviso and raced with the Fassa Bortolo team that is based nearby. Zanetti is hoping Cancellara can complete his career and kick off Segafredo’s sponsorship in style by winning Milan-San Remo and then pulling on the maglia rosa at the Giro d’Italia.

“He’s promised me he’d bring the pink jersey back to Italy after the opening stages of the Giro d’Italia in the Netherlands. Let’s hope he keeps his word,” Zanetti said.

Trek-Segafredo reveals 2023 team kits

It's business in the front, party in the back this season..

With November in the rear view mirror, a new cycling season rapidly approaches and professional teams are putting together the final touches for a new campaign.

Often, that means a new look for the new season. Trek-Segafredo just shared its new kits for both its men’s and women’s WorldTour teams for 2023, and while not a complete departure from 2022, the kits are a nice refresh of a familiar theme.

trek segafredo bidon

Both squads are sticking with predominantly white on the torso, accented by a line of color across the chest that is red for the men and blue for the women although the women now have a darker shade of blue across the front.

This year, the team is also extending color to the sleeves, with the women getting a lighter blue similar to last year’s color on the sleeves.

But the biggest change is to the back of the jersey.

Both designs feature an eye-catching pattern across the back alternating between checkerboard and horizontal lines in black over a base of the kit’s dominant color, red or blue. The team should be easy to pick out in helicopter shots among the sea of similar jersey designs.

The bibs have been slightly changed, but don’t try to break down any fashion norms of the peloton. The band of color around the leg is now thinner, and the base color is a navy blue.

Santini is once again creating the kits. Fans looking to pick up one of their own will be able to starting December 5.

Official: Trek-Segafredo become Trek-Lidl from 30th June onwards

The news had been out for a while, but have now been confirmed. On the 30th of June Trek-Segafredo becomes Trek-Lidl, changing on the eve of the Tour de France where the new equipment will first be used.

This change will apply to both men's and women's teams. “Part of our mission is to provide incredible hospitality to our customers and it’s clear that Lidl shares the same mindset,” John Burke, president of Trek, said in a press release. “We’re looking forward to working closely together to build the best cycling teams in the world while also inspiring more people to get on bikes.”

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

Features of the macrostructure and microstructure of uranium dioxide powders are considered. Assumptions are made on the mechanisms of the behavior of powders of various natures during pelletizing. Experimental data that reflect the effect of these powders on the quality of fuel pellets, which is evaluated by modern procedures, are presented. To investigate the structure of the powders, modern methods of electron microscopy, helium pycnometry, etc., are used. The presented results indicate the disadvantages of wet methods for obtaining the starting UO 2 powders by the ammonium diuranate (ADU) flow sheet because strong agglomerates and conglomerates, which complicate the process of pelletizing, are formed. The main directions of investigation that can lead to understanding the regularities of formation of the structure of starting UO 2 powders, which will allow one to control the process of their fabrication and stabilize the properties of powders and pellets, are emphasized.
