Ever since the ancient Greeks settled in the area in the 8th century B.C., the region around Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples attracted wealthy vacationers who wanted to soak up the sun and the scenery. By the turn of the first century A.D., the town of Pompeii, located about five miles from the mountain, was a flourishing resort for Rome's most distinguished citizens. People gathered in the 20,000-seat arena and lounged in the open-air squares and marketplaces. Elegant houses and elaborate villas lined the paved streets. Tourists, townspeople and slaves bustled in and out of small factories and artisans' shops, taverns and cafes, and brothels and bathhouses. On the eve of that fateful eruption in 79 A.D., scholars estimate that there were about 20,000 people living in Pompeii and the surrounding region. When a group of explorers rediscovered the site in 1748, they were surprised to find that, underneath a thick layer of dust and debris, Pompeii was mostly intact. About the ruins of Pompeii

Pompeii’s labyrinth of cobbled streets and well-preserved buildings takes you on a journey back to ancient Rome. From the grandeur of the Forum to the opulent villas embellished with intricate frescoes, every corner reveals the splendour of a lost civilisation.  

Two thousand years ago, Pompeii was a thriving and prosperous town favoured by Roman elites. But its fate took a tragic turn when Mount Vesuvius unleashed its catastrophic fury in 79 AD. The volcano’s eruption engulfed Pompeii in layers of ash and pumice, entombing the city until the 18th century. Today, the archaeological treasure trove is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering visitors a glimpse into the past. Since its very first excavation, Pompeii has held the status of the longest continually excavated site ever found. 

You don’t have to be an archaeologist or historian to be captivated by Pompeii’s aura. Immerse yourself in the poignant atmosphere as you stand amid the petrified remains of the city’s inhabitants, forever frozen in their final moments. Uncover the enigmas of the renowned Villa of the Mysteries, adorned with cryptic murals that depict secret initiation rituals. Be sure to check out the Amphitheatre, where gladiators fought for glory while crowds erupted with excitement. 

Things to know before you go  

The archaeological site has an accessible pathway for visitors with reduced mobility. 

Photos and videos without the use of flash and tripod are allowed.  

Only small bags – 30x30x15cm – are allowed inside the site. 

Soft drinks and snacks can be purchased at the on-site restaurant.  

There are drinking fountains located inside the excavation sites. 

Comfortable footwear is essential as the streets are dusty and unlevel. Be prepared to walk on cobblestones and up steps. 

During the summer, it can get very hot and there’s very little shade around the site. Come prepared with a hat, sun cream and a water bottle.  

Opening hours   

From April to October, 09:00 to 19:00, with last entry at 17:30. 

From November to March, 09:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 15:30. 

Closed on December 25, January 1 and May 1. 

How to get there  

Pompeii is just 26km or about 30 minutes away from Naples and is reachable by car, bus or train.

The most popular way of getting to Pompeii from Naples is the Circumvesuviana, a commuter train line. Take the Circumvesuviana train bound for Sorrento and disembark at the Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri station. The journey takes around 35 minutes. 

From Napoli Centrale station, you can also get to Pompeii with a Trenitalia regional train. Board a train heading towards Salerno or Poggiomarino and alight at the Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri station. These trains usually have fewer stops and offer a more comfortable travel experience.  

The Campania Express connects the centre of Naples with Pompeii. These air-conditioned trains are quicker and more comfortable, with space for luggage and the opportunity to pre book a seat. The journey takes about 30 minutes. 

From Naples, you can take the EAV and SITA buses from Piazza Garibaldi station. The journey takes around 35 minutes.  

There are private car parks as well as municipal parking spaces, outside the archaeological site.  

There are three entrance gates to Pompeii archaeological site – Porta Marina, Piazza Anfiteatro, and Piazza Esedra. The Porta Marina gate is closest to Pompei Scavi station, which is where you’ll get off if you arrive by either the Circumvesuviana train or the SITA bus.

What should I really see at Pompeii?

The House of the Faun villa is famed for its exquisite mosaic floors and the bronze statue of a dancing faun. While the well-preserved Villa of the Mysteries is adorned with frescoes that depict mysterious initiation rituals. It’s located just outside the town, past the Porta Ercolano necropolis. The Forum, which was the central square at the heart of Pompeii’s social and political life, features the ruins of temples, government buildings and markets. Also worth checking out are the Amphitheatre and Lunapar, which was the red-light district. 

What are the best ways to visit Pompeii?

A guide will allow you to get much more from your Pompeii visit . It’s a large archaeological park with a lot to explore and limited signage, and a guide will give you an overview without missing any of the major sights.

You should allow at least 3-4 hours for your visit, although you could easily spend longer at the site.

The best time to visit Pompeii in order to avoid crowds is early in the morning, or later in the afternoon. November to March is generally the best season to visit Pompeii, as summers tend to be very crowded. 

Has Pompeii been fully excavated?

Only two thirds of ancient Pompeii have been excavated since the first digs began in 1748. The rest of the site is still covered by debris from the eruption almost 2,000 years ago. Excavations are still going on, and there have been some spectacular new findings in recent years such as a thermopolium – a Roman fast-food joint – unearthed in 2020.

This tour is designed for passengers who prefer to see some sights from the motorcoach with little or no walking involved. Enjoy the sights of Naples, one of Italy's oldest cities on a 2.5 guided driving tour of its historic city center. See old-world architecture, heritage sites and plenty of Neapolitan culture in this capital city of the Campania region. Naples, is Italy's most densely populated metropolitan areas, with over one million inhabitants. Its historic city center is the largest in Europe and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll stop for a photo opportunity at a panoramic viewpoint on Posillipo Hill, overlooking the Gulf of Naples. Before heading back to the ship, you'll break for refreshments at a scenic chalet for a beverage. As you head along the waterfront, notice the ancient Castel dell' Ovo, the site where Naples was first founded. Return to port.

Truly amazing TUI arranged day tour to Pompeii and Herculaneum”

Both sites were truly amazing. Our tour guide was very informative and knowledgeable paced the tour just right for all ages and gave plenty of time for both looking around and shopping, convenience breaks and a stop for lunch (pre-paid). The ruins themselves were truly wonderful to behold and something I will never forget. A day trip that leaves you with lovely memories to hold on to. Pick up at the Hotel and drop off back. I highly reccommend a visit to both sites.

Our trip to pompeii was way earlier in May. We booked a tour with Private Tours of Pompeii and were pleased and satisfied with the quality of the tour. We planned a short visit about hour and half since we were lack of time. Our lady guide Fiorenza was lovely, helpful professional and knowledgeable. At the entrance there was a huge crowd but she could manage to get us in quickly and customized the tour to cover as much as she can for such a short tour! The tour was informative, easy and fun .We would highly recommend it to anyone looking to book a private tour.

I had signed up for two tours first was Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius the next was the Amalfi Coast. The weather for the day of the Vesuvius tour was terrible heavy down pour of rain and the climb to the mountain was not possible due to slippery conditions however Marco our driver came up with an excellent option we visited Herculaneum which was excellent and not as crowded as Pompeii. We had an amazing lunch at Cantina de Vesuvius Then onto Pompeii we had an excellent guide Salvatore a linguist/ archeologist just a superb tour covering the ruins in massive rain Very well done Next day Amalfi Coast with Marco Ravello Amalfi and Positano excellent only problem massive traffic Again well done

We had a private day tour to Pompeii and Herculaneum with Salvatore and our driver, Stephano. Stephano picked us up at our hotel in Sorrento, drove us to Pompeii, Herculaneum and finally to our hotel in Rome. Our driver was great and provided history about the areas we drove! Our guide, Salvatore, was equally wonderful! His knowledge of Pompeii and Herculaneum was wonderful. Pompeii and Herculaneum are not to be missed and Salvatore really made it come alive. Private Tours of Pompeii made our long travel and touring day a delightful experience.

This tour was very easy to arrange with our guide meeting us at the entrance to the site. Our guide was knowledgeable, interesting and funny. She tailored the trip to our requirements and showed us a very good cross section of Pompeii. We thoroughly enjoyed our day.

Being in the hospitality business its easy to get in the same ole routine, catering to tourist day in and out but our guide Fabio was like an old friend and allowed us to be our silly selves but yet providing a so much great information where we now want to know more and more about the great history behind Pompeii.

Is your cruise ship docking in Naples or Sorrento? A great shore excursion for the day is the Island of Capri, which you can easily organize independently without having to book with your ship's group shore excursion.

Here's how to organize your independent shore excursion to the Island of Capri, Italy .

From the Naples Port to the Island of Capri

Cruise ships dock near the Molo Beverello pier, where high speed ferries to Capri depart. Routes run frequently and tickets can be purchased directly at the pier or online. Buy a round trip ticket so you won't have to worry about purchasing your return ticket later!

From the Sorrento Port to Capri

Cruise ships dock off the port of Marina Piccola , with shuttles which take passengers ashore. Ferry routes run frequently in the morning; purchase a round trip ticket for the first high speed ferry available, or book online.

Sea crossings from Sorrento to Capri take about 25 minutes . Sit on the left side of the ferry to enjoy the view.

Visit the Blue Grotto

Pack your patience, because on days in which cruise ships dock at the port in Marina Grande, the island gets very crowded and lines for the funicular from the port to the Piazzetta are long.

If you would like to visit the Blue Grotto , we suggest you head there as soon as you reach the island. If you are able to reach the port between 9 and 10 am, you'll find that there is not much of a line.

You can choose between going directly to the Grotto, or combining a visit to the Grotto with a tour of the island by boat.

Tickets to enter the Blue Grotto cost EUR 13 and are always purchased separately directly at the entrance to the Grotto. Information about the Blue Grotto

Visit the Center of Capri Town

From the port, you can take the funicular uphill to the Piazzetta in Capri town in 4 minutes. If there is a long line, you can also take the bus from Molo 21 pier or from the bus stop near the pier. A particularly convenient and pleasant alternative is to take an open-top taxi: the fixed fare from the port to the Piazzetta is EUR 15.

Bus and funicular schedule

From the Piazzetta, walk down Via Vittorio Emanuele to the historic Quisisana hotel, and then follow the signs for the Gardens of Augustus. Entrance costs EUR 1 and from there you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the Faraglioni and Marina Piccola.

On your way back, take Via Camerelle, lined with luxury boutiques, and continue along Via Tragara to the scenic overlook.

Walk back along Via Fuorlovado and Via Le Botteghe until you are in the Piazzetta.

The Chairlift and Villa San Michele

To visit the other two most famous tourist attractions on Capri, you'll need to go to Anacapri, the island's other town. From Capri town, it's about 10 minutes by bus or taxi. The chairlift leaves from Piazza Vittoria and takes you to the top of Mount Solaro in 12 minutes.

Once you are back at the foot of the mountain, take Via Capodimonte just a few meters to reach Villa San Michele

Chairlift : roundtrip ticket: EUR 10; free for children under 8 who ride on their parents' lap. Villa San Michele : Entrance: EUR 7.

Back to the Port

There are often long lines to board the bus at the Piazza Vittoria stop. To avoid a long wait and be sure to get a seat on the next bus, walk along Viale Tommaso de Tommasi a few meters to the previous stop, where there are never many people waiting.

Or if you are up for a strenuous downhill climb, from Villa San Michele you can climb directly down the Phoenician Steps to the port: 900 steps connecting Anacapri with Marina Grande, which were once the only link between Anacapri and the outside world.
