Singapore Entry Requirements for UK Citizens

Tourist Visa Needed

(for stays of up to 90 days)

Arrival Card Needed

What British need to enter to Singapore

All foreign nationals, including British citizens, must hold a valid Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC) to enter Singapore. The SGAC is an e-service introduced in order to simplify the process of registering arrivals into the country . In addition, it makes document checks at the Singapore border smoother and faster.

The SG Arrival Card replaces the paper-based Disembarkation/Embarkation Card for Singapore, which has now been discontinued.

Do British Nationals Need an Arrival Card to Visit Singapore

All travellers from the United Kingdom, regardless of the purpose and duration of their visit, must obtain a Singapore tourist card for British nationals .

It is important to keep in mind that the SGAC for the UK is not a visa . It is actually a mandatory entry requirement for all foreign visitors. British nationals who need a visa must submit a separate application either online or at the nearest embassy or consulate.

The SGAC for British travellers is valid for 90 days from the date of entry in Singapore for visa-free stays.

What Singapore visas are available for British nationals?

Singapore offers several types of visas that fall into one of two broad categories: short-term tourist visas and long-term visas .

British passport holders who wish to stay in Singapore for less than 90 days for tourism, leisure, or family visits, can travel visa-free. Long-term Singapore visas are available for UK citizens who intend to remain in the country for extended periods of time, work, study, or move to Singapore .

Note that the visa eligibility status does not in any way affect the need to obtain an SG Arrival Card for British citizens, and vice versa. Having successfully obtained a Singapore Arrival Card does not waive the UK holder’s visa requirements.

What are the SGAC entry requirements for the UK?

The SGAC entry requirements for UK citizens are minimal and include having:

  • Access to a reliable internet connection and a device like a mobile phone, laptop, or tablet that will be used for online application
  • A UK passport with at least 6 months of validity left from the intended date of arrival in Singapore
  • A completed Singapore tourist card application form
  • An active email address for all communication regarding the SG Arrival Card
  • A debit or credit card to complete the online payment of the Singapore Arrival Card processing fee.

Because the SGAC is electronically linked to the passport used during the application, British candidates must use the same passport for applying for the SG Arrival Card and entering Singapore. That is also something dual citizens with multiple passports need to keep in mind. Some travellers from the UK may be required to show additional documentation such as:

  • Proof of onward or return travel
  • Financial evidence such as a bank statement showing that the SGAC holder can pay for their stay in Singapore
  • Vaccine certificates.

How to apply for a Singapore Arrival Card as British traveller

Obtaining an SGAC for British passport holders is a quick and easy process that can be done online in a matter of minutes. Although it is possible to help someone else complete their SGAC application, each request must be submitted individually.

To successfully complete the application, travellers must fill out the personal details and passport information in the application form including:

  • Nationality
  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Passport number
  • Passport country
  • Date of issue of the passport
  • Date of expiry of the passport
  • Home address
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Travel plans

After they have confirmed that all the information entered in the application form is correct, candidates will be asked to pay for the SGAC application fee through a secure online payment system. Payment can be done using any internationally recognised debit or credit card.

UK applicants will receive all communications regarding their Singapore Arrival Card via email to the address they have provided on the application form. It is, therefore, essential to regularly check the email address for notifications and status updates.

British SGAC holders can present their tourist card in its electronic format on their phone or another mobile device , along with their passport, upon arrival in Singapore.

Please note that the Singapore arrival card does not in itself guarantee entry into the country. The final decision is up to the Singaporean border control and immigration authorities.

Singapore Arrival Card for British visitors: Processing time

SGAC online applications are in most cases processed within one business day . However, applicants should submit their request at least 5 days prior to departure to allow enough time for delays that may be caused by public holidays and missing or incomplete information in the application form.

Register with the British Embassy in Singapore

UK citizens are highly recommended to register with the British Embassy before travelling to Singapore. Although most trips are problem-free, registered visitors enjoy greater peace of mind. British tourists who enrol with the embassy:

  • Receive the latest safety and security information about Singapore
  • Can be contacted and assisted more easily in exceptional circumstances such as a natural disaster
  • Help family get in touch if there is an emergency whilst they’re away from home

British travellers can register their details with the embassy when applying for a Singapore Arrival Card through this website. To opt-in, applicants should select the UK Embassy Registration service on the payment page.

Singapore travel restrictions from the UK explained

By Anya Meyerowitz

Singapore

Singapore's Changi Airport was named as the world's best airport in our Readers' Choice Awards 2021 , but beyond its duty free, the city-state is a buzzing metropolis of world-class restaurants, hotels and shopping centres (think Las Vegas proportions, complete with inside waterways and gondola rides). As of October 2021, the destination's move to ease restrictions for vaccinated individuals has prompted a rush to book flights – but can you travel to Singapore from the UK? Here's everything you need to know…

Can I travel to Singapore from the UK?

Yes: in October 2021, Singapore re-opened its borders to a vetted list of countries – including the UK – after 21 months.

What are the travel restrictions for visiting Singapore?

Previously, those travelling to Singapore from other countries either had to quarantine at a hotel at their own expense or, for arrivals from some states, such as Australia, isolate in a location of their choosing. The latest regulations mean that fully-vaccinated travellers from the UK can enter the city-state without quarantining.

The rule change is part of Singapore's Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) scheme, and means that passengers arriving from countries who are part of this scheme (which includes the UK) will not have to quarantine if they have been fully vaccinated. As of Tuesday 26 April, restrictions will continue to lift, with vaccinated travellers no longer needing to test before departure to Singapore (on-arrival tests have been waived since 1 April).

Singapore will accept the UK’s proof of Covid-19 recovery and vaccination record . Your NHS appointment card from vaccination centres is not designed to be used as proof of vaccination and should not be used to demonstrate your vaccine status.

Unvaccinated travellers cannot enter Singapore unless they are a Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident. It is possible to apply for permission to enter for exceptional reasons, such as compassionate grounds. Find out more about how you can apply to enter Singapore .

Do I need to take a PCR test to enter Singapore from the UK?

No, as of 26 April 2022 fully vaccinated travellers to Singapore no longer need to take a pre-departure Covid test.

Do I need to isolate when coming from Singapore to the UK?

As of 18 March 2022, all Covid travel rules in the UK were lifted, which means that no travellers – regardless of their vaccination status – need to test, quarantine or fill in a passenger locator form when travelling to the UK.

How to Apply for a UK Visa in Singapore

Many have wanted to visit the UK for the reasons mentioned above. Besides, what’s not to love about Big Ben, the London Tower Bridge, and double-decker buses which certainly add to the unique charms of the city. But before you get packing, consider getting yourself a UK tourist visa first… Here’s how:

Applying for a UK Tourist Visa / Visitor Visa in Singapore

After you’ve applied for a Schengen Tourist Visa , the next thing you’ll need is a UK Tourist Visa. The requirements are pretty much the same as with the Schengen Tourist Visa application, but you will only have to apply at the appropriate embassy, as you would expect.

Requirements:

  • Your valid and original Passport + photocopy (must be valid for at least 6 months at the date of your travel)
  • Your S Pass ID + photocopy
  • A passport size photo (in cream or light grey background)
  • Your old passports (for your travel record and history during the last 10 years)
  • Your certificate of employment or a letter from your company specifying the current position you hold, your monthly salary, the date when you were hired, as well as the length of your leave from work for the purpose of your intended travel.
  • Any of these documents to support your financial capacity (i.e. your bank statements during the last 6 months, your financial standing certificate, pay slips, or income tax return – whether personal or for a business)
  • Your travel documents which should include your confirmed flight booking, hotel booking/s, travel insurance (must cover the duration of your stay in the UK), and summary of itinerary (optional)

Important: When applying for a certain visa, make sure you do this ahead of time (by as early as 3 months to avoid unnecessary delays with your travel).

  • Create an account and fill out your visa application form online .
  • Pay for the appropriate visa fee applicable to your visa type. In this case, a standard visit visa in UK would cost you SGD 168.00 per person. This is non-refundble and may vary depending on the current exchange rates.
  • Once your application has been accepted and fully accomplished, print our your application form.
  • Book an appointment through the VFS Global Website and visit the visa application centre on your scheduled date. The Visa Application Centre in Singapore is located at:

135 Cecil Street,

#08-01 MYP Plaza,

Singapore 069536

Note:  Remember to be at the Visa Application Centre at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time and bring the original and photocopies of your documents needed for your visa application. It would also be helpful to prepare certified translations of all the required supporting documents that are not written in English/Welsh.

Also, you will be required to enrol your biometric data (photograph and fingerprints) at the Visa Application Centre so make sure that you do not have any designs or markings on your fingertips that may affect data collection.

You will also be given the option to receive SMS notifications on the status of your visa application when you visit the visa application centre so make sure to discuss this service with the staff who will assist you. There is an additional SGD 3.00 fee that you need to pay for this service.

Once your application has been reviewed, you will be notified and you may either pick up your documents at the VAC, or have it delivered to you by post (if you selected this option).

Introduction

Welcome to our comprehensive guide on which countries accept a UK Refugee Travel Document. The journey of a refugee is marked by immense challenges and uncertainties. Obtaining refugee status in a new country is a significant milestone, granting individuals the right to protection and a chance to rebuild their lives. One essential document that facilitates this journey is the UK Refugee Travel Document.

What exactly is a UK Refugee Travel Document, and why is it important? To put it simply, it is an official travel document issued to individuals who have been granted refugee status in the United Kingdom. This document serves as an identity proof and allows refugees to travel internationally while ensuring their protection and safety.

For refugees, having the ability to travel is not only a matter of personal freedom but can also be crucial in certain situations. Whether it is reuniting with family members, attending important events, or seeking educational and employment opportunities abroad, the UK Refugee Travel Document plays a vital role in facilitating these journeys.

In this article, we will delve into the countries that accept a UK Refugee Travel Document and explore any potential travel restrictions that may be imposed. We will also provide some valuable tips for traveling with a UK Refugee Travel Document, ensuring a smoother and more hassle-free experience.

It is important to note that travel regulations can vary between countries and are subject to change. We recommend consulting with the relevant authorities or embassies of the countries you plan to visit for the most up-to-date information. With that said, let’s explore the world of travel opportunities that await UK Refugee Travel Document holders.

What is a UK Refugee Travel Document?

A UK Refugee Travel Document, also known as a Convention Travel Document, is an official document issued by the UK government to individuals who have been granted refugee status in the United Kingdom. It serves as proof of identity and travel authorization for refugees, enabling them to travel internationally while enjoying the rights and protections granted to them through their refugee status.

The UK Refugee Travel Document is recognized by numerous countries around the world as a valid travel document, allowing refugees to enter and exit these countries and travel within their borders. It is important to note that this document is not a passport and does not grant the same privileges as a passport held by a citizen of a particular country. However, it serves as a viable alternative for refugees who are unable to obtain a passport from their home country.

The UK Refugee Travel Document is designed to comply with international standards set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). It contains essential information about the document holder, including their full name, date of birth, nationality (as “Refugee”), and a photograph. The document also includes a unique document number and is typically valid for up to 10 years, although the exact validity period may vary.

It is crucial to understand that the UK Refugee Travel Document is only issued to individuals who have been granted refugee status by the UK government. Refugees who have been given humanitarian protection or discretionary leave to remain in the UK may not be eligible for this travel document. It is essential to consult with the relevant immigration authorities or seek legal advice to determine eligibility and understand the specific requirements for obtaining a UK Refugee Travel Document.

With a UK Refugee Travel Document in hand, refugees gain the ability to travel internationally, which can be instrumental in a variety of situations. From attending family events and weddings to pursuing educational opportunities or participating in international conferences, the UK Refugee Travel Document opens up a world of possibilities and helps refugees maintain connections and build new lives beyond their country of refuge.

Overview of Refugee Convention Signatories

The international community recognizes the importance of protecting refugees and providing them with the rights and support they need. Several international agreements and conventions have been established to ensure the welfare and safety of refugees, one of which is the 1951 Refugee Convention.

The 1951 Refugee Convention, also known as the Geneva Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, is an international treaty that outlines the rights and obligations of signatory countries towards refugees. It defines who is considered a refugee and the legal protections they are entitled to receive.

Currently, 149 countries have signed and ratified the 1951 Refugee Convention, affirming their commitment to upholding the rights and protection of refugees. These signatory countries are obligated to offer assistance to refugees, including granting them access to legal protection, education, employment, and healthcare, among other essential services.

It is vital to note that not all countries that have signed the Refugee Convention automatically accept the UK Refugee Travel Document. Each country retains the authority to establish its own policies and requirements for accepting travel documents issued by other countries.

When planning international travel with a UK Refugee Travel Document, it is crucial to consider the specific travel regulations and restrictions implemented by each country you intend to visit. While many signatory countries accept the UK Refugee Travel Document, some may have additional requirements or restrictions that need to be taken into account.

It is also worth noting that there are some countries that, despite being signatories to the Refugee Convention, do not accept the UK Refugee Travel Document. Their decision may be based on various factors, including their internal immigration policies or diplomatic relations with the issuing country.

As such, it is imperative to thoroughly research and understand the travel policies of each country you wish to visit. Consulting with the relevant embassies or consulates is highly recommended to obtain accurate and up-to-date information regarding the acceptance of the UK Refugee Travel Document.

Overall, the Refugee Convention and its signatory countries play a crucial role in protecting and supporting refugees worldwide. It is through these international agreements that refugees are granted legal protections and the chance to rebuild their lives in a safe and welcoming environment. Understanding the nuances of each country’s acceptance policies ensures a smoother and more enjoyable travel experience for UK Refugee Travel Document holders.

While the UK Refugee Travel Document is generally accepted by many countries, it is important for holders to be aware of potential travel restrictions they may encounter. These restrictions can vary depending on the destination country’s immigration policies and diplomatic relations.

Here are some potential travel restrictions that UK Refugee Travel Document holders may face:

  • Visa Requirements: Some countries may require UK Refugee Travel Document holders to obtain a visa before entering. The visa application process may involve providing additional documentation, such as proof of accommodation, travel itinerary, or financial means to support the trip. It is crucial to check the visa requirements of the desired destination and apply well in advance.
  • Limited Stay Duration: Certain countries may impose limits on the duration of stay for UK Refugee Travel Document holders. It is essential to be aware of these restrictions and comply with the authorized length of stay to avoid legal issues or penalties.
  • Travel Advisories: Travel advisories issued by governments to their citizens may also affect UK Refugee Travel Document holders. If a destination is subject to an active travel advisory, it is important to assess the risks involved and consider whether travel to that particular country is advisable at the time.
  • Transit Restrictions: Some countries may have transit restrictions for individuals traveling with a UK Refugee Travel Document. This means that even if the destination country accepts the travel document, transiting through another country en route may not be permitted. It is crucial to check transit requirements and potential restrictions when planning multi-leg journeys.
  • Pre-clearance Requirements: In some cases, UK Refugee Travel Document holders may need to undergo pre-clearance procedures, such as obtaining an entry permit or providing additional documentation, before boarding a flight or entering a specific country. It is essential to verify if any pre-clearance requirements exist for the intended destination and comply with the necessary procedures.

It is important to note that travel restrictions can change over time and can vary between countries. Therefore, it is crucial for UK Refugee Travel Document holders to stay informed about the latest travel advisories, entry requirements, and immigration policies of the countries they plan to visit.

Before embarking on any international trip, it is highly recommended to consult with the relevant embassies, consulates, or immigration authorities of the destination countries. They will provide up-to-date and accurate information regarding any potential travel restrictions, visa requirements, or other necessary documents.

How to Apply for a Visa

Please note that the information below changes regularly. For example, the UK leaving the EU may change the ability to travel visa-free to European countries. Therefore, you should always check the visa requirements of your country of destination before you travel.

This question comes up when you are considering travelling to one of the European or Schengen Countries or another country. Once you have obtained refugee status, you may wonder where you can travel without the need for a visa.

If you are a holder of a Refugee Travel Document issued by the United Kingdom under the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees , you can travel visa-free to a lot of countries. Different countries have their own travel restrictions and require you to have a visa even for short term visits like tourism, even if you have a Refugee Travel Document.

When you are travelling, you will need to make sure that you carry your valid UK residence permit confirming your refugee status together with the Refugee Travel Document.

Getting a Travel Visa

A travel visa is an official document, usually stamped or affixed into the bearer’s passport, that grants the right to legally enter, remain within, or leave a foreign country. A  Schengen visa , for example, allows you to travel to any of the  Schengen countries  as well as other  non-Schengen countries  that allow travellers to enter their countries with a Schengen visa.

Travellers without a valid travel visa will be refused entry into a country. And, if the individual enters the country through illegal means and is later discovered, may be punished and deported.

Each country has their own processes for applying for a visa. Generally, you will need to fill in an application form and submit any requirements that the consulate or embassy asks for, and some even require you to appear for an interview .

There are many factors that could add to your visa being approved or rejected by the consulate, and many find the process of applying for a visa stressful for this reason. You can choose to do this on your own, or get a service like IaM to help you either make the application or check the application that you filled out yourself.

If you want to make your own visa application to any of the Schengen countries , check out our blog posts for our detailed guides:

The French embassy has been ignoring my email enquiries and their visa centre as well. I am stuck and do not know if I can still travel to France visa free with my refugee blue travel documents with Brexit. Has anyone travelled during this year 2021? did you need to apply for a Schengen visa or did you travel visa free? That would help a lot if someone could share their experience. Many thanks

My first inquiry: HI, my UK Refugee Travel Documents will expire in 14/11/2021 (that is bit less than 3 months from now). Can I still use it to travel to Europe (Greece or Lithuania)?

My second inquiry: about a week ago I contacted Lithuania (by email) asking if I could visit Lithuania using my Refugee Travel Document (above) visa-free. They confirmed that I COULD! However, in the list above Lithuania is under the “Countries that REQUIRE visas for visitors with the Refugee Travel Document (blue) issued under the 1951 UN Convention”. Can you explain how this works please?

You need to make sure that your travel document is valid if you plan to travel. As we have put up in the notice, these restrictions can change at any time so we recommend you check with the embassy.

Hi I am a Zimbabwean national who holds a UK refugee travel document and I just wanted to check if South Africa definitely does not require a visa as the last time a friend travelled there about ten years ago they did require one. At that time it did state that we needed one on their website but this is no longer stated so am guessing this has changed. Checked with the embassy but referred me to vfs global.

Regarding my earlier enquiry just got an email from VFS global South Africa desk and the agent stated that a visa would need to be applied for prior to travel if I hold a UK refugee travel document as a Zimbabwean national.

UK considered using Iraq to process asylum seekers in Rwanda-type deal, leaked documents show

Documents also show the UK and Iraq have a returns agreement which was made with a "request for discretion" and no publicity.

The government at one point considered using Iraq to process asylum seekers in a Rwanda-style scheme, according to documents seen by Sky News.

This could have seen people sent from the UK to a country the government advises against all travel to.

The two countries already have a returns agreement - but only for people who are from Iraq .

Politics live: Follow the latest updates here

According to leaked correspondence between high-ranking officials, the Iraqi returns commitments were made with a "request for discretion" and no publicity.

The country was willing to move forward but did not want a formal or public agreement.

The current travel advice to Iraq on the Foreign Office website simply advises against "all travel to parts of Iraq". However, according to the document, negotiations were fairly advanced and described in one table as "good recent progress with Iraq".

Returns agreements are also in the works for Eritrea and Ethiopia, according to documents about work undertaken by the Home Office and Foreign Office that relates to countries with the highest number of nationals arriving to the UK by small boats.

In a tranche of internal government documents seen by Sky News, even from the earliest stage of the Rwanda policy, Downing Street advisers knew there were serious problems with their proposals.

There are even private admissions that many people arriving here on small boats did so without the assistance of criminal gangs - despite their communications strategy.

Comparisons were also made to Australia's response - to what Downing Street officials understood to be a comparable "smaller problem" than in the UK and admitted it had cost billions of Australian dollars in order for their returns processes to be fully operational.

In one document submitted to the Home Office, some of the highest-ranking officials at the time wrote that their guidance was to be "prepared to pay over the odds" to get the policy up and running. And that the initial offer from Rwanda was a "modest sum".

Whitehall's official spending watchdog has priced the cost of sending asylum seekers to Rwanda at £1.8m per person for the first 300 people the government deports to Kigali.

It also disclosed that since April 2022 the Home Office has paid £220m into Rwanda's economic transformation and integration fund, which is designed to support economic growth in Rwanda, and will continue to make payments to cover asylum processing and operational costs for individuals relocated to Rwanda.

It will also pay further amounts of £50m over the next year and an additional £50m the following year.

A government source said: "The Home Office is spending millions every day accommodating migrants in hotels - that's not right or fair. We're taking action to put an end to this costly and dangerous cycle. Doing nothing is not a free option - we must act if we want to stop the boats and save lives.

"The UK is continuing to work with a range of international partners to tackle global illegal migration challenges. Our Rwanda partnership is a pioneering response to the global challenge of illegal migration, and we will get flights off the ground to Rwanda in the next nine to eleven weeks."
