8-Day Uluru to Adelaide Tour

This was an incredible experience! Amazing views, beautiful sunrise hikes, (bush) camping in swags and learning so much about geological and cultural history. My tour group was very small which created a very relaxed dynamic. No one was left behind or left out. Teamwork makes the dream work. Sid, our tour guide, is pretty damn awesome in what he does. I learned so much about these parts of Australia and he really kept me engaged because he showed authenticity and genuine engagement with people and his surroundings. He was very professional and cool even when things went a little south (blown out tire with a very long drive ahead). He had to stray away from the itinerary a couple of times but I fully trusted him to give us the best experience on this tour. He noticed when you took an interest in learning specific things and would try and teach you about what he knows. Also shoutout to Gary, who was a trainee tour guide. He'll do great on his first tour through the desert and that group will be lucky to have him. This part of Australia is so unique compared to the east coast and south. It's definitely in my top 2 of tours I've been on.

Flights are frequent and affordable, connecting Sydney to both Alice Springs and Ayers Rock Airport. A direct flight to Alice Springs takes approximately 3 hours, or you can opt for Ayers Rock Airport for added convenience. Ayers Rock Airport is a short 10 min bus ride to the town of Yulara where most tours will begin.

From traditional bush medicine to birthing caves, sacred waterholes to rock art, discover why Uluru and Kata Tjuta are the spiritual heart of Australia.

Standing 348 metres tall in the middle of an otherwise flat desert, Uluru is the coolest monolith you’ll probably ever see. But here’s the thing: Uluru’s so much more than a monolith—it’s a living landscape that holds 60,000 years of Anangu history, stories and culture. Join us on a Red Centre adventure to hike through 300-million-year-old canyons and gorges, listen and learn from  First Nations  guides, and watch these sacred sites come to life. If the fluorescent glow of Uluru at sunset doesn’t take your breath away, the glittering night sky certainly will.

Travelling in Australia is like a round-the-world adventure. This is why.

Uluru travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are the traditional owners of Uluru?

The Anangu (pronounced  arn-ung-oo ) people are the traditional owners of  Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park  and other regions of the Central Western desert.

They've been custodians of the land for over 60,000 years and are one of the world's oldest living cultures.

For the Anangu people, Uluru and Kata Tjuta are places of deep spiritual connection; they are physical evidence of Tjukurpa (the creation period) and the ancestral spirits who reside in the land.

How do I get to Uluru?

All of our Uluru trips start in Yulara (a resort town on the outskirts of  Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park ) or Alice Springs. The quickest way to get to Uluru is to fly to Yulara. You can fly direct from a few Australian cities including Melbourne, Sydney and Cairns with Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia.

You can fly direct to Alice Springs from most major Australian cities including Brisbane, Darwin and Adelaide (flights are generally more frequent from Alice than Yulara). From here, it's a 465 km (5.5 hours) drive to Uluru.

If your tour finishes in Yulara, we can drop you off in Alice Springs (at no additional cost), with an arrival back in town at around 6:30 pm.

Is climbing Uluru banned?

Yes, climbing Uluru was banned permanently on 26 October 2019 to respect the traditional owners and the  spiritual significance  of the site. The Anangu people have been holding spiritual and cultural ceremonies at Uluru for tens of thousands of years, and climbing is not generally allowed under Tjukurpa (Anangu law and culture). We think the views are better from down below, anyway.

Can I drink tap water in the Red Centre?

Yes, drinking tap water is safe in Alice Springs, Yulara and throughout the Red Centre. Ensure you bring a 1-2 litre reusable water bottle to refill at the water stations dotted around Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Staying hydrated is important as the Outback sun is intense and you'll be doing a fair bit of walking during the day.

Are there ATMs in the Red Centre?

You can withdraw cash at a number of ATMs in Alice Springs. There's also an ATM in the Town Square at Ayers Rock Resort in Yulara. Most of the highway roadhouses will have an ATM or the option to get cashback.

What should I pack for Uluru?

Layering is key in the Outback. The days are warm or hot all year so t-shirts and shorts are fine, however the temperature can drop at night so you'll need long pants and a warm jumper and/or jacket for sunrise and sunset. You’ll also need a comfy pair of walking shoes, a wide-brimmed sun hat, a day pack, sunscreen, lip balm and a reusable water bottle.

When's the best time to visit Uluru?

Uluru is awe-inspiring come rain or shine, but the best time to visit is generally between May and September when the days are dry and warm (but not scorching). Uluru sits in a semi-arid desert climate zone, so summer is sweltering with occasional storms (the amount of rainfall varies from year to year), while winter is warm and dry during the day with cold nighttime temps that often plummet below zero.

Is Uluru also called Ayers Rock?

You may have heard Australia's most famous landmark also being called Ayers Rock. However, the traditional custodians of Uluru, the Anangu people, have always called it Uluru. The first non-Aboriginal person to see Uluru was explorer William Gosse in 1873. He named it Ayers Rock in honour of his superior Sir Henry Ayers, the Chief Secretary of South Australia.

The rock was officially renamed Ayers Rock / Uluru in 1993, but it was renamed again in 2002 to Uluru / Ayers Rock to show respect for the Anangu people and acknowledge their custodianship of the land. We use the traditional name for this reason, and you'll also see the traditional name used throughout the national park.

The word 'Uluru' comes from the Pitjantjatjara language and has no direct English translation.

How will we travel around the Red Centre?

The Red Centre covers a huge, very remote area of Central Australia. We'll spend many hours driving from A to B in an air-conditioned vehicle. Make sure you bring ample snacks and maybe a few podcasts to listen to – or use it as an opportunity to get to know your fellow travellers. With a comfortable, air-conditioned bus, sit back and enjoy the unique desert landscapes that you'd miss in any other form of travel.

What's the accommodation like?

It depends on the trip style you choose. Our Basix and Original trips feature simple (but comfy) camping accommodation in permanent or semi-permanent tents with stretcher beds and shared facilities, or a mixture of camping and budget hotels.

If you choose a Comfort or Premium trip, you'll stay in 3-to-4-star hotels and resorts with private amenities.

Can I use my mobile phone at Uluru?

Mobile phone and data signal within Ayers Rock Resort and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is pretty good (Ayers Rock Resort also offers free Wi-Fi). You can usually pick up a few bars at the roadhouses, too, although some network providers tend to be better than others.

Expect the signal to be patchy or completely cut off when you're on the road or exploring more remote places like Kings Canyon or Tjoritja/West MacDonnell National Park. But hey, with views like these, we don't think you'll mind switching off for a few days.

Do I need to bring cash?

You can use a credit or debit card for purchases in most roadhouses, shops and restaurants in the Red Centre. However, it's always handy to have cash for smaller purchases.

You might also want to withdraw money if you're interested in buying artwork from local First Nations artists. Artists often sell beautiful, hand-painted tapestries in the gardens near Town Square in Ayers Rock Resort, and at the sunset viewing area. It's a great way to take a little piece of Uluru home with you.

What are some interesting facts about Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park?

  • The formations are approximately 500 million years old
  • The rock (Uluru) you see is only the tip of the, er, monolith. The rock mass extends up to 6 kilometres underground
  • Uluru is 348 meters tall (for reference, that's taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Chrysler Building in New York or the Eureka Tower in Melbourne)
  • The circumference of Uluru is 9.4 km and it takes around 3 to 4 hours to walk depending on your fitness level
  • The traditional owners of Uluru and Kata Tjuta are the Anangu people
  • Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is home to over 400 plant species and 21 species of mammals
  • The rocks get their orangey-red colour from the oxidized iron minerals

Are there things I can't do at Uluru?

Uluru is often referred to as the spiritual heart of Australia, not only because of its middle-of-the-country location but also for its great significance to Australia’s First Nations people (and more specifically to the Anangu, the traditional owners of Uluru). And for this reason, there are restrictions on what you can and can't do at Uluru. These restrictions include taking photos at sacred sites, swimming in waterholes around the base, and not calling Uluru by its colonised name, Ayers Rock.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Sun setting on Uluru, Northern Territory

SAVE 10% on Kimberley & Top End Tours!

  • Northern Territory

Even if you’re not one generally riveted by geology, sideline your reservations until you visit Uluru. Standing at 348 metres high, 10 kilometres in circumference and concealing caves, cascades and rock art in its folds, this is as spectacular as sandstone gets.

First Nations  connections to country here run deep; something that we try to impress on all travellers on our Uluru tours through various organised intercultural exchanges. It’s why, in 1998, we were among the first tour operators to stop climbing the rock (and why we’re thrilled that the practice has now been banned altogether). As any Territorian will tell you, it’s the stories behind Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Watarrka that really bring these sacred sites to life.

Our tours of Uluru will have you immersed in the rich history of the region. We can take you from Uluru to  Alice Springs , or if you prefer, Alice Springs to Uluru – the choice is yours. Either way, you’ll have your mind blown! Browse our wide range of Uluru tours and start planning your holiday today.

Budget Uluru Tours

Upgraded uluru tours, other red centre highlights.

Uluru may well be this region’s best-known attraction, but by no means is it the only one. Here’s a quick guide to some of the outback’s other great rock stars.

The Olgas, Kata Tjuta National Park

Kata Tjuta (The Olgas)

A grouping of 36 giant red rock domes located 25 kilometres east of Uluru. The tallest of Kata Tjuta’s ‘many heads’ rises almost 550 metres above the surrounding plain.

Kings Canyon, Northern Territory

Kings Canyon

An enormous gorge home to an all-natural Amphitheatre, ‘Lost City’, Garden of Eden and year-round waterhole. The undisputed highlight of Watarrka National Park.

West Macdonnell Ranges

West Macdonnell Ranges

Over 600 kilometres of craggy mountain ridges, scrubby grasslands, deep gullies and delightfully croc-free waterholes.

Uluru Aboriginal tours

Australia’s rich First Nations culture offers a unique insight into this wide brown land. Adventure Tours works closely with First Nations communities to develop ethical and authentic experiences that benefit the communities and passengers alike.

Tips for travelling in the Red Centre

  • Don’t be fooled by the outback’s size! While Alice Springs airport is only 13 kilometres from Alice Springs, Alice Springs to Uluru is 463 kilometres. If you’re checking out a trip that flies in or out of Yulara (the closest airport to Uluru), you may be able to arrange flights for the same day the tour starts or finishes. If you’re flying in or out of Alice Springs, you’ll need to arrive the day before, and book outbound flights for the day after the trip finishes.  Contact us  for help with accommodation in Alice Springs before and/or after your trip.
  • The Red Centre isn’t blisteringly hot all year. From June to August the weather actually gets cold at night, sometimes dipping below 0 degrees celcius. Pack a warm jumper or jacket.

Thanks Adventure Tours for managing our itinerary during the tour so as to keep us safe and to ensure a good experience even with the worst fire season known in Australia unfolding throughout the nation in the summer of 2020. Some of your tours were cancelled where necessary. I felt we were in good hands throughout.

Domestic border restrictions have ended for nearly all States, meaning you:

  • don’t need to apply for a border pass
  • won’t need a Covid test
  • won’t need to quarantine

However, some States and service operators do require proof of vaccination. So all that is required to travel for most Discover Australia packages is to be fully vaccinated. Even WA has now opened up! It is expected that any remaining temporary restrictions will end or ease over coming weeks – since all governments have detailed strategies to live with Covid and to enable their tourism industry to flourish again. See current travel requirements here .

Many travel insurance providers are now offering good cover for Covid, including:

  • Travel disruptions and additional expenses due to Covid
  • Positive Covid test before travel
  • Positive Covid test during travel (including need to change travel arrangements / isolation)
  • Cancellation Cover
  • Medical expenses cover

Insurance cover can be very inexpensive, like only $150 for three weeks in Europe # . We strongly recommend taking out travel insurance with Covid cover. Following are some insurance companies: Medibank | TID | AHM | NIB Book now to secure the best deal and biggest savings. Use part of your Early Bird savings to pay for your travel insurance!

About Uluru

Would you like to visit Australia’s iconic red rock? Maybe we should’ve said Ayers Rock or the most common name, Uluru ! Uluru is located in the middle of Australia, in the Northern Territory, not too far from other well-known rock formations, The Olgas (Kata Tjuta) . Uluru is a large sandstone rock formation and is nearest to the town of Alice Springs, which is roughly 335 km (208 mi) away.

Uluru is 863 metres in height and is a sacred place for the Pitjantjatjara Anangu, the Aboriginal people of the area. Uluru is also famous for its unique ancient paintings, rock caverns, waterholes, small lakes, and paradisal springs. Uluru was included in the World Heritage list in 1987.

Uluru - Ayers Rock Tours

Chances are when you think of taking an Aussie tour into the outback, you picture Uluru - the iconic rock that watches over the vast desert plains. Uluru is a sacred landmark to the local Aboriginal people and no trip to Australia is complete without seeing the nation's striking Red Centre. This massive sandstone monolith is the second largest in the world and sits smack bang in the centre of the country. Residing in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park , the region also includes the 36 red-rock domes of the Kata Tjuta, otherwise known as The Olgas formation.

Our amazing range of Uluru tours / Ayers Rock tours cover the very best of Alice Springs and Uluru activities as well as one day, 3 days or 2 days Uluru tour. Hike around the base of the rock, to the towering cliff edges of Kings Canyon , witness the stunning rock formations of Uluru and Kata Tjuta , learn about the centre's cultural importance and sleep around a campfire under a starry night sky!

Frequently Asked Questions About the Uluru Tours

What is the best time to go to Uluru?

Uluru and The Olgas are incredible at any time of year, but it is good to be mindful of different weather conditions especially during seasonal changes. Between May and September, the maximum temperature around the area is usually between 20°C and 30°C. That is why people usually prefer to visit Uluru between May and September.

Uluru Weather – Temperatures

Located in the Australian desert, weather conditions in Uluru can be considered extreme. Summer temperatures can reach between 40°C and 45°C in the desert, limiting outdoor activities during most parts of the day. On the contrary, during winter, temperatures can drop to below 0C. Here’s a rundown of the season’s average temperatures (in Celsius and rounded off):

Spring – High between 26°C - 34°C and low between 9°C - 17°C

The entrance fee for the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is $25 per person. You can visit for three consecutive days after you buy the ticket.

How many days do you need in Uluru?

We usually recommend at least two nights and three days at the Rock. If you allow yourself two nights and three days in Uluru , you'll be able to see an impressive Uluru sunrise and Uluru sunset , plus explore the main sites in the area. If you prefer to visit Uluru with a 3 day Uluru tour or 4 day Uluru tour you would also have a chance to see Kings Creek Station and maybe Kakadu National Park .

Can you climb Uluru?

Uluru is considered a sacred site for Aboriginal people in the area and visitors are no longer permitted to climb Uluru. The climb was permanently closed in 2019, however, the 10km walk around the base of Uluru is still an incredible way to see and experience this wonderful formation.

Can you walk around Uluru on your own?

The short answer is yes, visitors can choose to walk the entire 10km loop around the whole circumference of the rock alone or in a group. No matter the level of fitness, all visitors are advised to be mindful of the weather and time of day. It is always best to walk in the cooler morning hours and drink plenty of water and stay cool. Visitors can also choose to hire a bike and cycle around the base instead of walking. Find out why  Uluru Base Walk Holds Such a Special Place

Uluru is the heart of Australia and represents so much about this country; its size, its beauty and its culture. Shortly after you arrive, the unmistakable Uluru will emerge from the earth as one giant boulder. Walk off your lunch at Kata Tjuta. With its 36 various-sized domes, it provides quite a contrast to Uluru. You’ll get to know the landscape pretty well on an afternoon hike between the domes.

As the evening unfolds, enjoy a light snack as the sun slowly sets casting a variety of earthy tones across Uluru. The perfect end to a remarkable day is awaiting you back at camp, as you enjoy a delicious spread of food with your group. If the weather permits, sit outside under the stars.

Uluru is considered a living cultural landscape and home to the spirits of the ancestors making it a sacred place for the Anangu peoples. The Anangu people have dissuaded visitors from climbing Uluru for decades; as traditional owners of the land they feel a deep responsibility for everyone who travels to the area. In 1998, Adventure Tours Australia were among the first tour operators to stop climbing Uluru. We are proud to be involved with local communities in Uluru, and to have an ongoing commitment in contributing to employment for the Anangu people.

The main attraction of Watarrka National Park is undoubtedly Kings Canyon – a humungous gorge enclosed by sheer rock walls many meters high. With its porous sandstone, deep gullies and hidden rock pools, it provides shelter to more than 600 species of native plants and animals. Your guide will point these out on a trek that takes in the canyon’s most famous locations – the Lost City, the Garden of Eden, Amphitheatre, and of course North & South Walls. After lunch, we hit the road again for a three-hour drive to Yulara in the late afternoon. Tonight, you have choice to enjoy one of the following optional activities; a Sunset Camel Cruise, the Field of Lights, Sounds of Silence, the Wintjiri Wiru Drone display; or if you’d like to experience the Uluru sunset from a different perspective (and free of charge), tonight is the opportunity to do it! After dinner, relax at your camp for a night under the stars.

The 3,900-kilometre road trip from Brisbane to Uluru takes at least 43 hours. Highlights in the north include the Sunshine Coast, Carnarvon National Park, and Alice Springs, while the Gold Coast, Adelaide and Lake Gairdner are key stops in the south.

We've put together the most epic routes and must-see highlights, as well as suggesting the best times of the year to travel and where to spend one of your overnight stops. So, let's get going on this fantastic adventure from Brisbane all the way to Uluru.

How far is Uluru from Brisbane, and how long will the road trip take?

There's no escaping the fact that this is a long road trip! Both the routes we have devised are of similar length, with lots of great stops along the way to break up the kilometres.

The Northern Route covers 3,990 kilometres and has a drive-time of around 45 hours, non-stop. This route takes you up Queensland's beautiful Sunshine Coast before turning inland for the Northern Territory's Red Centre.

The slightly shorter option is the Southern Route, at 3,900 kilometres and 43 hours. This route takes you to the Gold Coast and through New South Wales, before heading north across South Australia.

Given the length of these routes, we would recommend taking at least seven days to enjoy this adventure. The minimum time needed to complete the trip would be about five days.

Best road trip route from Brisbane to Uluru

As both our routes offer a little of everything, the best route is likely to come down to personal preference. Whichever you choose, you will enjoy spectacular scenery and a chance to experience the sheer vastness of Australia.

If a highlight of the trip would be the chance to explore the Sunshine Coast, then our Northern Route is the best option. This route also takes you through “cattle country” and to Alice Springs, the heart of Australia's Red Centre. While this is our longer route, if you are short of time, avoiding the detour to Carnarvon National Park would reduce the driving time by about five hours.

Alternatively, the Southern Route takes in Queensland's stunning Gold Coast and the vibrant city of Adelaide. You also get to enjoy the landscape of New South Wales before heading to Uluru in the Red Centre. Other highlights include Lake Gairdner National Park and the wine towns of Mudgee and Red Cliffs.

How to drive from Brisbane to Uluru

The map above shows our suggestions for the best road trip routes between Brisbane to Uluru. Keep reading for detailed descriptions of both routes, where to stay on either one, and the best things to do on the way.

The Northern Route

Head north from Brisbane towards the Sunshine Coast. When you've finished enjoying the beaches and maybe a visit to Great Sandy National Park, head for the M1 and continue north through Queensland. Just past the town of Chatsworth, take a left and drive west for Barakula State Forest.

Leave the state forest and join the A2. At the town of Roma, head north for Mount Moffatt, Carnarvon Gorge and Carnarvon National Park. If you wish to reduce the length of the trip, you can also just stay on the A2.

If you take the detour to Carnarvon National Park, rejoin the A2 and continue north. At Barcaldine, turn left for Longreach. From here, pick up A2 once more and cross into the Northern Territory. When you reach the crossroads at Wurumungu, turn left for Tennant Creek and drive south to Alice Springs in the Red Centre.

Take State Route 6 out of Alice Springs for Kings Canyon. From here, continue south on State Route 3 and then head for State Route 4 for the final stretch of the journey to Uluru.

The Southern Route

For this route, head south from Brisbane to the Gold Coast. Cross into New South Wales and continue on M1 past Byron Bay. Take the A1 and cross the Clarence River. At Tyndale, take B76. This will take you along the Clarence River and on to Guy Fawkes River National Park.

Continue south to the town of Mudgee and then on to Orange. From Orange, drive west for Red Cliffs, crossing into Victoria. When you've finished exploring the Red Cliffs region, continue west, crossing into South Australia. Keep heading west for the coast and the city of Adelaide.

From Adelaide, drive north to Port Pirie via A1 and A87 for Lake Gairdner National Park. From here, drive north on A87 through South Australia and into the Northern Territory. Continue north until you see the sign for Uluru and take a left for the final part of your journey.

Best places to stop between Brisbane and Uluru

On a longer road trip like this, frequent breaks from driving are essential to keep you feeling fresh, energised and enjoying your time on the road.

Fortunately, both our routes feature fantastic options for overnight stops. We've chosen one on each route, plus a suggestion for a hotel once you reach Uluru.

Red Centre hospitality in Alice Springs

On our Northern Route, our choice for an overnight stop is the lovely town of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. You'll reach Alice Springs just five hours before Uluru, making it a convenient final overnight stay on your journey.

Alice Springs is known as Australia's spiritual heart and it's the perfect place to discover the country's Red Centre. In fact, there are lots of amazing hiking trails in the surrounding area. Alice Springs Desert Park, Larapinta Trail and MacDonnell Ranges are all worth exploring.

It is also a great town for art-lovers, while everyone will enjoy a visit to the Kangaroo Sanctuary. Book ahead to take one of the late-afternoon guided tours of the 188-acre wildlife reserve (the residents are left to sleep undisturbed during the day!).

The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Alice Springs presents an oasis of comfort and modernity amidst the rugged landscape . The hotel is renowned for its lush gardens, which include tennis courts and a heated pool, alongside an impressive 18-hole golf course.

A unique feature of the hotel is its resident peacock, adding a touch of exotic charm to the already picturesque setting. Peacock aside, the outdoor swimming pool is also a favourite among guests, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.

The hotel's location is conveniently within walking distance to the town and the Alice Springs Reptile Centre, making it easy for guests to explore local attractions. Nearby, the Museum of Central Australia and Ashwin Park are just short drives away, offering insightful and leisurely experiences respectively.

Modern elegance in Adelaide

Our recommended stop on the Southern Route is the coastal city of Adelaide in South Australia. You'll reach Adelaide with around 17 hours left of your road trip, depending on stops.

This cosmopolitan city on the banks of River Torrens is a bustling hub of arts, culture, and food and drink. There is a wide array of museums, cultural centres, and nightlife. You can also take a dolphin-watching cruise or check out the fresh local produce at the Adelaide Central Market.

While you're here, you might also like to visit the Art Gallery of South Australia or enjoy some time at Glenelg Beach, with its white sand, turquoise water, boutiques, and eateries.

Our favourite hotel in the city is the stylish and modern Pullman Adelaide . Located at the heart of the city, the hotel is a convenient base for sightseeing. The Adelaide Oval and bustling Rundle Street are within a 15-minute walk.

Overlooking the beautifully kept gardens of Hindmarsh Square, the hotel offers al-fresco dining in the on-site restaurant and bar. You can also swim in the lap pool. The comfortable guest rooms are well-equipped and offer city or garden views.

A desert oasis near Uluru

Once you reach your destination, relax at the excellent Desert Gardens Hotel, which is just 20 minutes from Uluru . You can take a welcome dip in the outdoor pool or explore the beautifully maintained native gardens.

Some of the elegant, well-appointed rooms feature private balconies or views of Uluru. The hotel also has a bar and restaurant on-site, which will be convenient after a full day of driving or exploring the local area.

Walk, or use the hotel's handy free shuttle bus, to the neighbouring Ayers Rock Resort and Resort Town Square, where you can find cafés, shops, tours, lookouts, and a spa: everything you need to make your Uluru stay luxurious and fun.

Best time to go on a road trip from Brisbane to Uluru

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is open to visitors all year round. Winter is a great time to visit Uluru, with temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius and fewer flies compared with the summer months. Night-time temperatures can fall to zero degrees.

During the summer, temperatures can reach close to 40 degrees Celsius, with the risk of rain and storms. Whilst the thought of rain might put you off at first, be aware that rain fills the waterholes and triggers Uluru's waterfalls. This spectacular sight is truly something special to behold!

Spring and autumn are also great times to visit Uluru, with reliably dry conditions and daily highs of around 30 degrees Celsius. There are fewer visitors during these seasons and, importantly, hiking trails remain open.

You might want to visit Uluru in April to enjoy the Tjungu Festival: a celebration of Indigenous culture featuring film, art, music, food, and sport.

Alternatively, for a really unique experience, time your trip so you can visit Uluru on the last weekend in May for the Uluru Camel Cup Race. There is a fabulous range of activities spread across this weekend of festivities, with the race itself taking place on Saturday.

Uluru, previously known as Ayers Rock, might be the draw card for visiting the red centre, but there is so much more to see here and a guided tour is the perfect way to learn more about the cultural significance of this very special part of Australia.

  • Accommodation is pretty expensive in Uluru, so most visitors try to see as much as they can in on their trip. Going on an escorted tour is a great way to make sure you see the top sites in your brief visit.
  • A tour means you don’t need to worry about airport transfers, meals and logistics. You are just free to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.
  • Your guide can help you better understand the cultural significance of the sites you visit and their meaning to the traditional owners.
  • Someone will wake you up for your Uluru sunrise so you don’t miss out on one of the best experiences of your time in the Red Centre.

Do you want a comfortable bed at the end of the day or would you prefer to sleep in a swag under the stars? Would you rather cycle the Uluru base walk or is flying over it in a chopper top of your Northern Territory wish list?

There is a tour to suit you. You just have to dig through all the options to find it. We know how long this can take because we have done it ourselves a few times now, so today you get to benefit from our experience and hopefully find the perfect tour for your visit.

Outback Australia tour

You need at least 2 full days, preferably 3, to see the major sites at Yulara/Uluru. If you want to see Kings Canyon, you need at least another full day. Personally, I think you should allow 3-5 days to have the best experience in Uluru. Read our full guide to planning a trip to Uluru for more details.

Most Uluru tours will include:

  • At least one sunrise, usually Uluru but sometimes Kata Tjuta and on longer tours, often both.
  • An Uluru sunset viewing, sometimes with a BBQ but usually with at least some drinks and nibbles
  • A guided walk around the base of Uluru – either a portion or all of the 9km path
  • A visit to the Cultural Centre to learn more about the Anangu People

Some tours will add extras like:

  • The famous Sounds of Silence dinner
  • A viewing at Bruce Munro’s Field of Light
  • A sunrise or sunset camel tour
  • A Helicopter Flight over Uluru and Kuta Tjuta
  • Aboriginal cultural experiences like a dot painting workshop

The other thing that varies is meal inclusions. On a camping experience, you will be expected to help prepare dinner and clean up after your meal. One many of the entry level tours few or no meals are included and on the luxury options, you will find a fine dining option is added.

There are several excellent tour operators offering holiday packages to Uluru. The key to having a great trip is to choose the company that is best suited to your travel style.

The biggest operator is AAT Kings, who have been offering tours in Australia for more than a century. They work with several local guides and have the biggest range of options. Being the biggest operator means that it’s very unlikely (unheard of really) that your tour will be cancelled because of a lack of numbers.

While tourism may have restarted in the Northern Territory last year, not all the backpacker/adventure operators have come back online. Thankfully, one of the best, Mulgas Adventures, has and is offering well run camping tours departing from either Alice Springs or Uluru Ayers Rock Resort. In the coming months, I expect more options to be available.

Mulgas Adventures Uluru and Kings Canyon

If you like the idea of sleeping under the stars, then Mulgas Adventures is a fantastic tour . In an action packed a couple of days, you will see the main sights of the Red Centre and do three of the area’s best hikes.

Day two begins with a sunrise over Kata Tjuta, with Uluru in the distance. Then it’s time for a 2-3 hour walk to the Valley of the Winds. After this, you will probably be ready for an afternoon nap (I was!).

You will find the best (most frequent) options out of Sydney and Melbourne. If you are planning on exploring another destination in the Northern Territory , buy a one-way ticket and head to Darwin or Adelaide after your Ayers Rock tour.

Another option is to take the Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin , which includes a three day stop in Yulara.
