All Over Albany
There's a modernist architecture tour of ualbany's uptown campus coming up.
This year's Historic Albany Foundation / Docomomo Tour Day is October 6 at the UAlbany uptown campus . Tour blurbage:
Join SUNY Albany architect Edward Durell Stone's son, Hicks Stone, and SUNY professor Ray Bromley for an architecture and history tour of the State University of New York at Albany campus, considered a signature work of E.D. Stone, and completed in 1964 on the western outskirts of Albany, NY.
We will also get an update on the renovations and additions to the campus since 2011, the last time we toured the campus for Docomomo tour day.
Edward Durell Stone was a prominent modernist architect whose works included Radio City Music Hall, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Kennedy Center in DC. He also designed the US embassy in New Delhi -- in which you might be able see some of the ideas that would later pop up in the design for the UAlbany campus.
There are two tours that Saturday, at noon and and 2 pm. Tickets are $10 and available online .
Docomomo? About blurbage for the org : "Docomomo US is dedicated to the preservation of modern architecture, landscape and design. Through advocacy, education and documentation, we provide leadership and knowledge by demonstrating the importance of modern design principles including the social context, technical merits, aesthetics and settings of these important pieces of American history."

The Campus Buildings Historical Tour identifies and describes University at Albany, SUNY, buildings in 2003 located on the Uptown Campus, the Downtown Campus, the Health Sciences Campus (then the East Campus), and Alumni Quadrangle. It also includes information about University buildings that no longer exist, from the University's first temporary building located at 115-121 State Street, 1844-1849, to the Willett Street Building destroyed by fire in January 1906. Descriptions of each of the buildings includes the date of construction, architect, cost, use, and biographical information about the person or persons for whom it is named. The tour of the Uptown Campus is currently under development.

AJ Simon, ex-Albany star and 2024 NFL Draft hopeful, dead at 25
A lbany defensive lineman Amitral “AJ” Simon, who had hopes of getting selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, has died, the university announced Wednesday.
No cause of death was provided.
“The UAlbany football program was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former student-athlete Amitral “AJ” Simon this morning,” the football team said in a statement Wednesday.
“AJ was a tremendous young man and even better teammate throughout his time at UAlbany. He was a role model both on and off the field, serving as a pillar to this program over the last two years. He will be profoundly missed.”
We love you, 8 💜 pic.twitter.com/OhpBlPXvmr
The team also shared a post on X with the caption: “We love you, 8” with a purple heart emoji.
Simon, a Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania native, started his collegiate career at Division II Bloomsburg University of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference — where he was a 2021 First Team All-Conference standout — before playing his last two seasons for the Great Danes.
He dominated in his senior season at Albany, racking up 55 total tackles — 37 solo — along with 12.5 sacks as the Great Danes went 11-4 on their way to their first-ever Coastal Athletic Association title before reaching the semifinals of the 2023 FCS playoffs.
For his part, Simon came away with numerous accolades including All-CAA First Team Defense, FCS Football Central First Team All-American, Stats Perform FCS All-America Third Team and Phil Steele All-CAA First Team.
“Two joyous [years] coaching and becoming friends with AJ Simon,” Albany head coach Greg Gattuso wrote on X. “My prayers are dedicated to the Simon family. I love you AJ and will always have a special place in my heart for #8.”
Simon announced his decision in December to enter the NFL draft in a statement shared on his social media, and on April 1, Simon worked out as part of Albany’s Pro Day in hopes of catching on to an NFL squad.
According to Pro Football Talk , Simon had a pre-draft visit with the Patriots last week, with ESPN ranking him as the No. 448 prospect in this year’s draft class.
One of Simon’s teammates, linebacker Jahlil Johnson, said the defensive lineman made an impact in many lives .
“Went to war with you and about you brother… what’s understood doesn’t need to be explained. You left an impact on everyone you touched,” Johnson wrote on X. “You truly were a special kind of person could light up any room so glad to have shared a relationship with you.
As We Celebrate Earth Day, a Reminder of What Cannot Be Recycled at BU
Paper towels and napkins, coffee cups, and food waste are among the non-recyclables that contaminate BU recycling bins. Photos courtesy of BU Sustainability
Well-meaning “wishcycling” actually contaminates the recycling stream
Rich barlow.
The road to pollution hell is paved with good “wishcyling” intentions. The word refers to recycling stuff because you want to be responsible—but the items actually are not recyclable and should be thrown away or composted instead. Wishcycling, alas, defeats the eco-point.
It “only contaminates items that are recyclable and makes them trash,” HuffPost notes . It also imperils recycling facility workers, says Sarah Healey, zero waste manager at BU Sustainability . “Although there are lots of machines that help sort materials, the process still requires people to operate them. One notable safety hazard involves film plastics, which can wrap around and jam up the equipment. This forces workers to climb inside the machines to cut it out.”
And leaving food scraps in recycled containers can draw rodents to recycling facilities, says Healey.
So what cannot be recycled at BU? “We get questions on it every single day,” says Sam Moller, Sustainability’s assistant communications director. Understandably so: marking products as recyclable is a loosey-goosey affair. Most plastics carry the familiar resin code, the “chasing arrows triangle with a number in it,” Healey says. But that number merely indicates the plastic type the object is made from, not whether the plastic is recyclable. “There is very little regulation or policy around labeling an object as recyclable, which leads to a lot of greenwashing,” she says.
You should pay attention to your plastic’s shape, not its number. “Your bottles, tubs, jugs, and lids from your household are all recyclable, regardless of the number on them,” says Healey. She suggests consulting Recyclopedia , and for Massachusetts residents particularly, these FAQs about commonwealth practices.
Meanwhile, in time for Earth Day, here are commonly mis-cycled items at BU.
Hot coffee cups
“The biggest problem by far,” Moller says. They go in the trash; only the cardboard sleeve can be recycled.
Compostable plastic products
Trash them, don’t compost them. “Compostable plastics are one of the largest greenwashing issues we see,” Healey says. They’re typically made with a corn-derived material that requires special composting at an industrial facility. The problem is that those facilities are few, she says, and those in Massachusetts can’t manage the high volume of plastics generated at BU.
There’s an exception to the can’t-be-composted rule: compostable plastic liner bags, “which are acceptable at almost every compost facility,” she says. “This is because the liner bags make composting easier, eliminate the ick factor, and result in high volumes of food waste going to the compost facilities.”
Used napkins and paper towels
These should be composted, not recycled, along with food waste. “BU Dining collects food waste from all of the facilities they operate, as well as their catering on campus,” Healey says. Additionally, there are numerous on-campus composting sites, including:
- All waste stations in the Center for Computing & Data Sciences
- Agganis Arena, 925 Commonwealth Ave.
- Metropolitan College’s Gastronomy Program, 808 Commonwealth Ave.
- The stores at 700 Commonwealth Ave., near Warren Towers
- The Medical Student Residence, 815 Albany St., on the Medical Campus
- Chequers, the basement café in the Medical Campus Instructional (L) Building, 72 East Concord St.
Film plastic
Toss in the trash.
Wax paper from food stores
See film plastic, above.
Amazon mailers and similar packages
“Amazon mailers are trash,” Healey says, unless you can take them to a drop-off recycling facility. “Star Market [1065 Commonwealth Ave.] is the one that is closest to campus.”
Black plastic
The color makes it garbage.
“In a recycling facility,” Healey says, “all of the recyclables from the truck are dumped onto a large floor space, and from there they are loaded onto a conveyor belt. There, they’re exposed to optical sorters—“machines that use light to read the ‘DNA’ of the plastic. The process uses light refraction to determine plastics, and bursts of air to sort the items on the conveyor belt.” But since the conveyor belts are black, she says, “black plastic blends in, and the optical sorters cannot differentiate the plastic from the belt. As a result, the black plastic gets mixed up with different types of plastic and needs to be sorted out.”
Plastic food containers with food in them
These can be recycled, but only if you clean out food remnants first.

Loyola Marymount University Newsroom
LLS Rejects Antisemitism
April 18, 2024
During an April 16 event planned by the Jewish Law Students Association, community members were subjected to antisemitic insults. The law school rejects hateful rhetoric—in this case, antisemitism leveled against members of the law school community. Antisemitism has no place on our campus or in our society.
Community wellness and safety remain our top priorities. After receiving reports of abhorrent speech associated with antisemitism, other religious discrimination, racism, misogyny, and attacks on the personal appearance of our attendees, we have taken immediate steps to address complaints. While our investigation is underway, we have implemented interim safety measures on campus. We are also implementing procedures to prevent behavior that violates our code of conduct or is inconsistent with our mission and values. University leaders are engaging students, faculty, staff, and other community members to provide support and resources while they work toward a swift resolution.
