The job market for tour guides in the United States
There are currently an estimated 45,800 tour guides in the United States. The tour guide job market is expected to grow by 10.5% between 2016 and 2026.
How employable are tour guides?
CareerExplorer rates tour guides with a D employability rating, meaning this career should provide weak employment opportunities for the foreseeable future. Over the next 10 years, it is expected the US will need 13,200 tour guides. That number is based on 4,800 additional tour guides, and the retirement of 8,400 existing tour guides.
Are tour guides in demand?
When most people hear the term ‘tour guide’ they commonly think of guides who show travellers around places of interest, either in one city or country or at multiple destinations as part of an extended tour. The fact is, however, the field employs different kinds of guides and the demand for and employability of those employed in each sector varies according to several factors. Certainly, job prospects for local tour guides who escort visitors to museums, galleries, and religious sites rely on an influx of tourists. These tour guides must be able to recall facts, figures, and events and be able to convey them in a compelling manner. Those guides who accompany groups on multi-city or multi-country itineraries are responsible for almost every tour detail and must possess exemplary organization skills and the ability to engage different cultures. In most European countries, local guides must pass rigorous examinations and must be licensed to practice. In North America, there are few regulations for tour guides and they are generally not required to obtain a license. Regardless of where these tour guides work, familiarity with local history and attractions, communication skills, comfort with public speaking, and knowledge of more than one language are definite assets for progressing in the field. A background in theatre or entertainment or experience in teaching will also improve a candidate’s employment prospects. ’Tour guides’ who work with corporations suffer from a misnomer. They are not tour guides. They are ‘trip directors’ or ‘travel directors’ or ‘tour directors’ and their responsibilities vary greatly from those of traditional tour guides. TDs, as they are referred to in industry circles, act more as traveling concierges who cater to the needs of participants on corporate reward or ‘incentive’ trips. Aspiring TDs need to be prepared for extremely long days, multiple changes to pre-planned programs, and often unexpected requests and demands from their guests who have in most cases won their trips for achieving sales or management quotas. Since TDs sometimes travel to and from destinations with their groups, they are more employable if they have at least a basic understanding of airline reservations and ticketing procedures, as well as language skills. A high energy level, ability to think on one’s feet, and a genuine desire to resolve issues are unofficially mandatory to be successful in this role.

US Ghost Adventures is a great place to work, offering great pay and flexible schedules! We’re always looking for skilled storytellers in each of our 60+ cities. If you have a passion for telling engaging stories or think you'd be great at it, please apply below. We look forward to meeting you!
THE PROCESS
Our process involves four steps that can get you started in two weeks, or earlier if you learn the material sooner! The process length depends entirely on how quickly you can deliver a quality tour. We'll guide you through each step of the process to help you succeed. We also provide a $200 referral bonus if you refer a friend after they complete their first 20 tours.
1. Introduction and Webinar
Each applicant is encouraged to attend one of our live, introductory webinars (optional) with a recruiter to discuss the hiring process and for Q&A. Webinars are held three to four times each week at varying times. If you are not able to attend a webinar, please feel free to move to phase 2 and submit an initial audition !
2. Phase 1: Initial Audition
Applicants are asked to memorize and recite a paragraph ( click here to see script and submit initial audition ) of sample material through our quick and easy website.
3. Phase 2: Contract and Begin Training
Once your initial audition is approved, we send you your contract via DocuSign. Once we receive it, we'll send you the study materials. You will have two weeks to learn the material and the tour route. A test date will be scheduled either for a tour or a live virtual audition with a hiring manager.
4. Phase 3: Training and Test
During your study and training phase, you will practice rehearsing the material out loud to friends or family, and walk the tour route to become familiar with the locations and where to best stand. We also recommend recording yourself rehearsing the material and watching to seek areas for improvement. You may attend tours given by experienced tour guides to silently observe. Once you pass your test, your first tour will likely be a supervised tour accompanied by a seasoned tour guide to observe.
5. Phase 4: Onboarding and Scheduling
Once you pass your supervised tour, you will be sent your t-shirt and equipment, and the process and procedures manual to review and sign. The hiring manager will review this with you. We'll then add you to the schedule, and you'll start giving tours!

15 Jobs That Will Pay You To Travel
Posted: March 22, 2024 | Last updated: March 22, 2024
There are at least 15 jobs that will pay you to travel. Finding them is the hard part, keeping them is the important part.
It helps to build a reputation first as a guide since you do need to know a lot about a given area to talk about it. But a job like this that will pay you to travel is interesting and can widen your worldview in a big way.
Travel Agent
There are a few companies out there that will pay you to travel so that you can familiarize yourself with the packages they offer. Hey, the more you know, the better you sell.
Working on a Cruise Ship
This should speak for itself since there are only a few people who remain in port when a cruise ship strolls by. If you don’t mind being out at sea for a while, this is a great job for you.
Flight Attendant
Another job that speaks for itself, being a flight attendant does require working with people. But if you can be patient and understanding, as well as slightly authoritative, then you have what you need.
Archaeologist
It sounds like a dream, right? But there are a lot of caveats to this position since even being paid to travel, there’s a lot of fieldwork, and your education level needs to be at an exceptional high before you step into this arena.
Travel Writer
Much like travel agents, travel writers need to know something to write about it. While it’s true that they can use their imagination and creative skills to fill in the gaps, there’s nothing that beats experience.
Environmental Scientist
Between fieldwork and the need to visit one site or another for various reasons, this job is bound to keep a person moving. It might not be the best for people who want to visit home more often, but it’s hardly ever boring.
Storm Chaser
The travel might not be as extensive as other positions throughout the world, but a stormchaser doesn’t always stay still. It’s not like the movie Twister, at least not entirely, but it does keep a person on the move.
Event Planner
These folks need to know the venues that they’re booking, and therefore it’s necessary to take a trip now and again to see what’s what. This helps them to recommend one venue or another and keep their clients happy.
House Sitter
It’s interesting to think about this, but house sitters who can pick up and go at a moment’s notice are popular right now. There are such things as background checks of course, but building a reputation is important enough that a lot of people will keep themselves as honest as they can.
Much like a housesitter, pet sitters need to be vetted to make certain that the family pet, or pets, isn’t being placed in the hands of an inept individual. But being able to travel from one place to another is a big expense, so it’s fair to think that these jobs are very coveted and people don’t let them go lightly.
Photographer
People will travel the world over to get the best possible picture sometimes. A travel photographer will often spend months if not years abroad trying to capture the perfect images. If they find someone willing to pay for that, then kudos to them.
English Teacher
Traveling abroad isn’t uncommon for many teachers as American teachers will make their way to one country or another when their skills are in demand. With that in mind, other teachers are often tapped to teach students various subjects.
Construction Manager
A lot of construction managers might remain in a certain town or city, but those who have an exceptional skill set will be sent to projects around the world at times. Imagine being the person who’s placed on site to make sure something comes through on time or is being managed the way the big bosses want.
It’s very easy to act as a translator over a Zoom or Skype meeting, but some companies want to add a personal touch and send their people to those who need their services. This is the type of position that, if you reach it, is wise to keep for as long as possible.

Sean Paul helped bring dancehall to the masses. With a new tour, he’s ready to do it all over again
Paul's 22-date U.S. run dubbed the “Greatest Tour" to begin May 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) — It has been 21 years since Sean Paul’s dancehall anthem “Get Busy” topped the Billboard Hot 100 — which means “Get Busy” is finally old enough to hear “Get Busy” at the club.
“It’s changed for me now,” Sean Paul told The Associated Press over Zoom from his studio in Jamaica, reflecting on the song’s legacy. “Because when I say, ‘Get busy,’ I’m telling the kids to do their homework or clean stuff up.”
In the years since Paul helped introduce dancehall riddims and reggae to new audiences, he’s released six ambitious albums, including two straight out of the coronavirus pandemic: 2021’s “Live n Livin” and 2022’s “Scorcha.” He’s become a father and a devoted husband. (The “Jodi” in the “Get Busy” lyric “Shake dat ting, yo, Donna Donna / Jodi and Rebecca”? That’s his wife.) And his ambition to make joyful, danceable music has never wavered.
“It’s a timeless piece for me,” he says of “Get Busy.” “Every time I try to do a song, I try to put the same butterflies that I had in my belly when I was flirting with the first girl on the first dance floor I went to. It’s just a feeling.”
That translates to his goal of bringing positivity to the masses.
“I have a lot of help with the riddim tracks, the genre itself is very infectious,” he says. “It gives you joy.”
His dedication comes from life experience.
“I had a lot of problems, as most teenagers do, trying to find themselves, trying to understand what life’s about. You know, my father was in prison. It was a single mom situation, and she was struggling to make sure that we were conscious beings,” he says.
Music was the release.

The total solar eclipse is only the first act of a powerful month astrologically
Now, he’s taking that energy on a 22-date U.S. run dubbed the “Greatest Tour,” kicking off May 2 at House of Blues in Orlando, Florida, and ending June 16 at the Fillmore in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“Why am I doing it now? I feel that the people are ready for me again,” Paul says.
“I did some work with some reggaetón acts last year,” he adds, referencing new dancefloor hits, including the massive “Niña Bonita” with Feid and “Dem Time Deh” with Colombian singer Manuel Turizo.
He’s also released a few solo singles, including the infectious “Greatest,” and promises more conscious songs in the future — thematically not unlike 2016’s “Never Give Up.”
“There’s a lot of struggles here in Jamaica as well as it being, you know, a very beautiful place. But we do have our struggles that we have to deal with,” he says. “A lot of people don’t know me for that type of material, but, you know, it’s as important in my career.”
At his shows, fans will get a little taste of everything. But “good vibes,” mostly, he says: “I think people feel the fun from me and it bounces back and forth.”

Harry Styles’ U.K. Hometown Is Hiring Expert Fans to Serve as Local Tour Guides
Harries, this is not a drill — a dream job has come to Harry Styles ’ hometown of Holmes Chapel, England.
Holmes Chapel Partnership, a community-run organization, announced in a recent newsletter that job openings are available for fans interested in giving tours of the English village that the singer, 30, once called home.
“Even during the wet winter months, Harries have continued to visit, braving muddy banks and wet fields to pay homage at Harry’s Wall,” the organization’s chairman, Peter Whiers , wrote. “Local businesses have seized the opportunity to cater to these visitors, with references to Harry in various locations around the village. But it is time for us to elevate our offerings and ensure that visitors have a truly memorable experience in the village which we are proud to call our own.”
Dubbed Harry’s Home Village, the tour will be led by guides who are ideally 16 or older — though seniors are welcome to take part — and can “confidently lead a group with enthusiasm, whilst being organized, punctual and patient.”

Interested applicants are encouraged to apply online for the job, which promises flexible working hours and “competitive” compensation. “If you’re ready to combine your love for Harry Styles with a rewarding job as a tour guide in Holmes Chapel, apply now,” the posting reads.
Tours will officially begin in June. Popular landmarks for fans in Holmes Chapel include Mandeville’s, the bakery where Styles worked as a teen, and Twemlow Viaduct, the location of the singer’s first kiss. Fortune City Restaurant, the local dining spot where Styles took his now-ex Taylor Swift , is another well-trodden location.
Styles’ mom, Anne Twist , still lives in Holmes Chapel and told the Daily Mail in April 2023 that the As It Was singer is quick to “open the fridge” as soon as he returns home. Twist added, “We’re all close, it’s just geography. We all see each other when we can.”

The family has plenty to celebrate these days with the recent birth of Gemma Styles ’ baby girl. On February 23, the pop star’s older sibling announced via Instagram that she and longtime partner Michal Mlynowski became first-time parents.
“👋🏻 Hello from maternity leave! Took some time off to ensure the safe arrival of our baby girl, who is adored by her whole family 🫶🏻,” Gemma, 33, captioned the post. “I know that this news can be difficult for many people and I’m sending you lots of love 🤍.”

Gemma shared two black-and-white photos with her little one. The first image featured Gemma and Mlynowski walking outside with the baby strapped to Mlynowski’s chest. The second photo showed Gemma cradling the newborn in her arms.
The couple have been together since 2015. Mlynowski was first introduced to fans when One Direction performed at the Apple Music Festival in September of that year.
“I’m sorry if I seem a little distracted, my sister’s on a date and I’m trying to keep an eye on it,” Harry quipped to the crowd at the time. “They’re up there somewhere. … So just please behave yourselves, it’s disgusting.”

Harry Styles' Hometown 'Recruiting' Fans for Tour Guide Position
The singer's native village, Holmes Chapel in Cheshire, England, is looking for 'Harries' to take visitors on guided tours
Kevin Winter/Getty, Nathan Stirk/2024 Getty
Calling all Harry Styles fans – your dream job is waiting!
The singer’s hometown, Holmes Chapel in Cheshire, England, has launched a new job opportunity and is “recruiting Harry Styles fans” specifically.
In the village’s April newsletter , chairman Peter Whiers announced the Harry's Home Village Tour Guides initiative, which he described as an effort to “elevate our offerings and ensure that visitors have a truly memorable experience” visiting Styles’ hometown.
According to the job description , the village is seeking people with a “flair for storytelling” and a “genuine interest in Holmes Chapel with a good knowledge of its history, including Harry Styles and his roots here.”
The role is perfect for anyone looking to “combine [their] love of Harry Styles with a rewarding job as a tour guide,” and applications are open until April 15. The tours are set to start in June.
Nathan Stirk/2024 Getty
The guided walking tour is a step up from what Holmes Chapel had previously been offering — a Harry Styles Walking Map, which launched in 2023. More than 5,000 people visited the village to follow the map, Whiers wrote in the newsletter, leading to a “significant increase in footfall.”
Two of the most visited destinations in the village were Mandeville’s, the bakery where Styles worked before auditioning for The X Factor in 2010, and the Twemlow Viaduct, which is referred to as “Harry’s Wall.”
“Even during the wet winter months, Harries have continued to visit, braving muddy banks and wet fields to pay homage at Harry's Wall,” Whiers wrote in the newsletter. “Local businesses have seized the opportunity to cater to these visitors, with references to Harry in various locations around the village.”
The village, and the bakery in particular, were highlighted in One Direction 's tour movie, 2013's One Direction: This Is Us , which saw each of the boy band members bring cameras along for a behind-the-scenes look at their lives in their hometowns before their worldwide fame. In one particularly beloved clip from the documentary, Styles made a surprise visit to Mandeville's and some of the older women running the shop were over the moon to see him.
Catherine Ivill/Getty
While it's been quite a few years since the "As It Was" singer resided in his hometown, Styles has been seen out and about in London and its outskirts over the last few months, including with his girlfriend Taylor Russell .
In February, he debuted a new, shorter haircut as he attended a Premier League match between Manchester United and Luton Town at Kenilworth Road Stadium in Bedfordshire. It was the first time he'd been seen since he shocked fans — and the internet — with a buzz cut , which was on display as he attended a U2 concert at The Sphere in Las Vegas with his Bones and All actress girlfriend in November 2023.

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian travelled to Oman on Sunday on the first leg of a regional tour, the ministry said, almost a week after a suspected Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
"Amirabdollahian is travelling to Oman as the first destination of his regional tour at the head of a political and parliamentary delegation. Bilateral and regional issues such as Gaza will be discussed," the ministry said.
Suspected Israeli warplanes bombed Iran's embassy compound in Syria on Monday in a strike that Iran said killed seven Revolutionary Guards commanders, including three senior members.
The United States is on high alert and preparing for a possible attack by Iran targeting Israeli or American assets in the region in response, a U.S. official said on Friday.
War in Israel and Gaza
Israel' military has escalated airstrikes in Syria against Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Iranian-backed Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, both of which support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Israel typically does not discuss attacks by its forces on Syria. Asked about the strike last week, an Israeli military spokesperson said: "We do not comment on reports in the foreign media".

Every mile tells a story, and along this route you will discover the heritage that built Belmont County through the importance of transportation, agriculture, and industry, and the history that helped shape the region.
Explore the buckeye backroads while driving along parts of all three scenic byways in Belmont County: Ohio River Scenic Byway, Drovers’ Trail and the Historic National Road.
Sponsored by the Belmont County Tourism Council, this self-guided driving tour will feature points of interest through the Blaine, Martins Ferry and Bellaire areas. With its beginnings, as a tour of the local farms and homesteads in 1971, the route changes each year.
The 2024 Heritage Trail/Rubberneck Tour will feature stops at: the 1828 Blaine Hill “S” Bridge, Sedgwick House Museum, Historic Walnut Grove Cemetery, National Imperial Glass Museum, Union Square Park, the Great Stone Viaduct and the Willow Grove Mine Memorial.
This family-friendly event is free to the community and stops will include activities, demonstrations, and food trucks all along the route. Heritage Trail Passport books will be available the week before the event at the Tourism Office and online at visitbelmontcounty.com, and they will also be at all stops during the event.
The passport books contain a route map and details to learn more about each stop. Complete your passport by checking in and getting a stamp at every stop along the trail, to be entered to win one of five “Belmont Prize Baskets” (valued from $50-$200).
