7 Things I Loved About Viking’s Paris & The Heart Of Normandy River Cruise
- Cruises and Sailing

- Types of Travel
- Viking Cruises
Being an experienced cruise lover, I was thrilled to be invited and hosted by Viking River Cruises to experience the Paris & the Heart of Normandy sailing. This was a special route for me as both of my grandfathers landed in Normandy during World War II. I had dreamed about visiting for most of my life. I also knew Viking Cruises would do an exceptional job showcasing the area, as I am a repeat cruiser with them. Here is what I loved about experiencing France with Viking River Cruises.
1. A Fantastic Paris To Normandy Itinerary
When picking out cruise itineraries, finding places near and dear to your heart and spending your money toward that goal is essential. As mentioned above, this itinerary caught my attention. Our cruise started in Paris, with an overnight and 2 days of sightseeing.
We visited smaller, lesser-known towns that kept us out of heavy-traffic areas. This also brought us to interesting ports of call.
Besides Paris, we visited the towns of La Roche-Guyon, Vernon, Rouen (with overnights), Normandy beaches, Les Pecq, and Les Andelys along the Seine River.
Scenic cruising is also a big part of European river cruising. We cruised by several places that were perfect for sightseeing from our small Viking Fjorgyn verandas.
2. French History
I love any reason to learn things that help me answer Jeopardy questions. How about you? I learned a lot about French culture, history, and, most definitely, its famous artists on my Paris & the Heart of Normandy sailing.
In Les Andelys, a charming old Norman village, were the ruins of King Richard the Lion Heart’s 12th-century fortress, Chateau Gaillard, perched atop a majestic hill. Rouen offered a picturesque cathedral painted more than 30 times by Claude Monet.
I was most surprised that we went to and toured Vincent van Gogh’s last residence and burial site in Auvers-Sur-Oise. This site is a pilgrimage for art enthusiasts and has a picturesque setting. Van Gogh is buried alongside his brother, Theo.
Fun Fact: Though we didn’t stop in Giverny, France, because there is no safe place to pull over for a better view, we did see Claude Monet’s famous gardens and home of 40 years.
3. Paris Food Tour
I’ve taken my share of food tours worldwide, but having a Paris food tour offering on Viking River Cruises was a no-brainer. Our small group roamed the city on foot and by Paris Metro to taste our way through five or six local hotspots.
At one place, we sampled olive oils, vinegar, and honey. We had a trio of desserts at another spot with French coffee and hot tea. The stop I liked best was at a brewery for a cheese plate and glass of wine. Take advantage of this tour.
4. Included Excursions
A key difference between river cruising versus ocean cruising is that there are “included” excursions, meaning you don’t pay extra to do these things. Each day, Viking offers tours at each port of call.
Excursions may run 2–3 hours, or even longer, such as going to the beaches and cemetery in Normandy, which requires several hours each way on a bus. Buses are included when necessary because of distance or accessibility.
Viking Cruises does a stellar job of vetting its tour guides. Hence, they are easy to understand, are entertaining, and have control of their groups.
There are paid excursions available each day, something to consider depending on your interests.
Pro Tip: Viking uses the word “leisure” for walks or excursions that are slower-paced and easier for those with mobility issues, though they are open to anyone .
5. Views Of The Eiffel Tower At Night
Our cruise officially “embarked” at 3 p.m. but docked overnight so guests could explore Paris independently. I liked that. Many went off to see shows or have dinner at fancy Parisian restaurants; while others, myself included, hung out on the Viking Fjorgyn and got to know the people we would be spending the week with.
From the comfort of our stateroom veranda, the lounge, or the top observation deck, we could see the Eiffel Tower right down from where we were docked. From here, we could enjoy the evening twinkling light show with no stress of fighting the crowds, or even being dressed for that matter.
Our Viking Fjorgyn ship was docked in a thriving part of Paris where something was going on at all hours, though not loud and boisterous. It is a good location for sightseeing and souvenir shopping, but keep your belongings close to your body at all times.
6. Guided Normandy Experience
Normandy is 3 hours from Paris, or 90–120 minutes from Rouen, where we docked to see half of the Paris to Normandy itinerary stops. I was familiar with and loved the neighboring Brittany region of France.
Our day at the Normandy beaches involved a long bus ride, but it was worth it! First up was a stop at the Mémorial Caen Museum, which tells the story of World War II. It has a noteworthy gift shop as well. If you are looking for souvenirs, buy them here.
Included with our Viking River Cruise was lunch at the museum. Our group had a separate dining area with a tasty plated meal, wine, and dessert. I had seen the roped-off area during museum free time and commented on how fancy and nice it looked. Imagine my surprise when they corralled us into the space. I thought this was a very special touch to our long day.
Next, we headed to the Normandy American Cemetery for a somber presentation and dedication to the military on our sailing. It was a charming special touch when our tour guide arranged for a floral display to be placed at the base of the Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves bronze statue.
Lastly, we arrived at the Omaha Beach location, famed for D-Day arrivals and many casualties. There was time to walk around, take pictures and videos, pay tribute to our loved ones and fallen soldiers, and reflect on the importance of this location.
Tissues are recommended.
Pro Tip: This is American property. Our guide encouraged us to take home souvenir sand if we wanted. Luckily, I brought an empty water bottle for this reason. You may want to, too.
7. French-Themed Dinner
Hold on to your hats for the French food extravaganza buffet night; it is sensational in every way. Have your cameras ready, because everything here is photo-worthy.
As the guests entered the dining room, you could hear the “oohs” and “aahs” escaping every mouth. Table after table was eloquently dressed and loaded with fancy plates and boards of food that were specific to the region.
Besides the gourmet cheese boards, spread of salads, and charcuterie, there were also glasses of wine and champagne. The staff blended well with their striped shirts, berets, and stylish threads that were so chic and “gay Paris.” This is one lively event.
Even as a foodie, there were many things I was not familiar with on the buffet line and tables. This is your perfect opportunity to try it all; the food was well labeled and Viking is particular about food allergies. Don’t skip the duck pâte — it was some of the best I’ve ever had.
You’ll be dreaming of the delicious mini-desserts, as well. The French-themed buffet was my favorite dinner night on the ship.

By: Author Melody Pittman
Posted on April 10, 2024
Set sail on a river of dreams with our 12-day magical Paris to Swiss Alps Viking River Cruises adventure. There’s something so special about unpacking once and waking up at a new destination daily. Picture this — a boutique floating hotel where friendly faces greet you, culinary delights await your taste buds, and endless views captivate your heart.
OR Join us as we recollect our 12-day fairy tale aboard a Viking River Cruise, beginning through the romantic streets of Paris and winding down to the snow-kissed peaks of the Swiss Alps. If the travel bug bites you and you daydream about cruises that take the scenic route, buckle up; this one’s for you.
If you have been looking for a great cruise itinerary with the best of both worlds (cruising and land trip) , this Paris to the Swiss Alps cruise may be the one for you. Let me show you what Viking River Cruises is all about and what this trip entails.
Thanks to Viking River Cruises for hosting my travel arrangements and stays. As always, opinions and reviews are 100% mine and unbiased.
A Journey Begins in the City of Lights
Paris, the city that sparkles, was our first stop. Soon after our arrival, greeted by the warm Viking team, we found ourselves unwinding at the Marriott Paris Rive Gauche – our cozy haven for the next few days.
High-quality service? Check. Oh-so-comfy beds? Double-check.
Eager to kick things off, my husband, Eddie, and I hopped aboard the metro straight to the iconic Eiffel Tower . Pro Tip: meander around the base and capture those Insta-worthy snapshots—Paris in all its iron-laced glory!
Opting for a scenic Seine River cruise was a no-brainer. We floated by Parisian treasures like the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, and Notre Dame, whose architectural splendor during the golden hour is a photographer’s dream.
Cherished Moments and a Brush with History
Viking knows how to charm its guests—a guided tour skipping the queues at Notre Dame (a day before the fire, mind you) was a poignant moment we’ll never forget. Post-tour, we rummaged through quirky souvenir shops and indulged in the ultimate French sandwich, the Croque Monsieur, perfectly complemented by a rich Parisian hot chocolate.
Starting the day right, Viking laid out an array of breakfast options in a room inside the Marriott hotel, including fresh bread, cheeses, delicious cold cuts, and more, with a fabulous selection of brews and juices to wash it all down.
A Palace Straight Out of a Fairytale
Are you craving more culture? Us too! That’s why we didn’t think twice about the extra excursion to Versailles, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that sees over six million visitors annually. It’s worth every penny of the $150, trust me. Viking whisked us away, and just like that, we bypassed the long lines to step into the opulence of the Palace of Versailles .
King-size luxury, intricate details, and glistening chandeliers – even among the throngs, the Hall of Mirrors caught our breath in its shimmering reflection.
Luxembourg – A Delightful Detour
With Paris bidding us adieu, we ventured onto Luxembourg City. Just a short scenic drive and voilà—local guides were at the ready, sharing insights and hidden gems. “Un café et pain” (a cafe, meaning coffee, and bread) soon became our go-to phrase, savoring coffee breaks with a side of the local pastry du jour.
We discovered that Luxembourg City wasn’t just easy on the eyes but kind to our wallets regarding shopping and dining. And get this: mine and Eddie’s first date, 31 years ago, was to Chi-Chis, where we saw one in the city.
A Tribute to Heroes in Luxembourg
Our expedition took an unexpected turn as we ventured beyond the urban charms of Luxembourg City and stumbled upon a place of profound honor – the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial . We were moved to silence and tears among the thousands of white crosses marking the bravery of WWII heroes like General George S. Patton.
The place’s serenity contrasted with its tumultuous history, leaving us awestruck. By the way, this cemetery is maintained by America.
Trivia Fact: 5073 WWII service members from Battle of the Bulge are buried here.
Climbing back aboard the magnificent Viking Kvasir, the welcome couldn’t have been warmer. Stateroom cards in hand, our belongings whisked to our cabins, we were soon clinking glasses in a toast with newfound friends, the prelude to a scrumptious dinner, which follows nightly.
Germany Welcomes Us with History and Wine
In the warmth of our fourth morning, Trier awaited us. Trier isn’t just any German city — it’s brimming with history as the oldest in the nation and was once the Holy Roman Empire’s capital.
Our eager bodies followed the cobblestone paths to Roman gates and baroque palaces, each step a footprint in time. The Porta Nigra (ancient city gate) was the best photo op.
Our cruise to Bernkastel-Kues was a sequence of picturesque vignettes in the Moselle Valley. Remember to glimpse the circa 1608 Renaissance Rathaus and the St. Michael Fountain — moments in stone that captured our imaginations. This was my favorite port on the entire cruise.
Snack Tip: Pick up an ultimate cheesy pretzel or pizza spargel from a street vendor.
Sipping Riesling in Bernkastel-Kues
Opting for a ‘Tour & Tasting,’ we savored the robust Rieslings of the region at Dr. Pauly Bergweiler , memories of honey and apricot dancing on our tongues. There’s something special about enjoying a vintage right where it’s born. They also had a tasty ice wine.
Other optional excursions unfurled the historic tapestries of Mainz and Strasbourg. Whether following in the steps of Martin Luther or sipping more wine while gazing at Alsatian vineyards, each opportunity was a gem waiting to be uncovered.
Once the wine had settled into pleasant recollections, we ventured to dine at Gasthaus Burkard . The evening highlight? A succulent Pork Jagerschnitzel paired with handmade Spaetzle. It doesn’t get much better than this.
Mesmerizing Moselle Valley
Our Viking Kvasir glided into Cochem, and we couldn’t resist the allure of exploring on our own during the five-hour window. Half-timbered houses seemed to whisper tales of yore as we wandered through the picturesque streets.
A ride on the Cochem Chairlift confirmed what our hearts already knew—this land is spellbinding. We grabbed amazing photos from this vantage point, and it cost less than ten euros each.
We skipped the guided steps up to 11th-century Reichsburg Castle, instead choosing to meander on our own, allowing us to absorb Cochem at our pace, a decision as rewarding as the panoramic views.
Scenic cruising unveiled the expansive Moselle Wine Country — a carpet of 22,000 miles of terraced hillside vineyards unfurling before us in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
Day six led to Koblenz, a trove of German wonders from shopping in the Four Towers to the historic fort of Festung Ehrenbreitstein. Here, find a corner under a covered table, fill up your coffee cup, and marvel at the mouthwatering pastries — a pleasure for the senses.
People-watching is supreme.
Jewels Along the Rhine
With the whispers of legendary sirens of the Lorelei rock still in our ears, Wiesbaden beckoned. A spontaneous discovery led us to margaritas and chips & salsa as delightful as the city itself, followed by a fountain McDonald’s Diet Coke, which had us rejoicing to no end.
Here, in the heart of savory experiences and cobblestoned mazes, we celebrated the luxury of choice and the thrill of discovery that a Viking River Cruise offers.
Wiesbaden Nights and Mainz Mornings
Day seven dawned in Mainz, a major trade center in the Middle Ages, with its stellar attractions—the Gutenberg Museum and Mainz Cathedral. Viking cruises have their magic, granting us a private peek into the celebrated museum on a day it is typically closed.
The museum vividly depicted Johannes Gutenberg’s groundbreaking press. Today, only 49 copies of the 180 original Gutenberg Bibles exist.
The quiet beauty of Marc Chagall’s blue-stained glass windows in St. Stephen’s Church (built in 990AD) was a sobering counterpoint to the jubilant sweet flavors we later savored from a nearby cafe. We are holding our own on keeping up with daily pastries and coffees.
Speyer – Where History and Taste Collide
Speyer, a storied name etched into the UNESCO annals, brought us face-to-face with the monumental Speyer Cathedral . Its echoing halls and soaring organ note our symphony for the day, with eight emperors of old in their eternal sleep beneath, meaning they are buried here.
Peppered boutiques and cafes dotted the town we explored before we surrendered to the siren call of fresh pretzels and flavored teas at Maximilian Cafebar Restaurant. We then indulged in a hearty baked Italian dish from Restaurant Porta Nuova .
A Technik Museum visit rounded off our tale in Speyer, treating our eyes to a fabulous collection of vintage cars and planes of yesteryear.
A Feast of Sights and Flavors
Returning on board meant not just rest but a celebration, with Captain Patrik and Chef Jakub conjuring a barbecue that turned lunch into a feast under open skies, setting the tone for the mélange of experiences that Viking River Cruises represent.
Our meal on the Aquavit Terrace featured four types of sausages, mustards for dipping, potato salad, and several side dishes.
Strasbourg, France – An Easter Day of Discovery
On the ninth day of our cruise, we bid farewell to our floating home with a day in the storybook town of Strasbourg. This gem in France’s Alsace region greeted us with its fairy-tale charm. Imagine – half-timbered houses, winding cobblestone streets, and a relaxed morning tour that was just a teaser of the town’s beauty.
Post-lunch, adventure-seekers had the option of a wine-tasting tour, but we couldn’t resist the pull of Strasbourg a moment longer. We ventured back on our own, meandering through Petite France, where cafes and souvenir shops welcomed us even on Easter Sunday.
Notre Dame Cathedral Strasbourg beckoned, but a snaking line guided us towards a delightful plan B – indulging in sweet and savory crepes at La Cigogne Bar & Creperie. Who knew defeat could taste this delicious?
Viking didn’t forget it was Easter; we returned to find luxurious Lindt chocolates and colored eggs waiting to add sweetness to our staterooms and breakfast tables. Such thoughtful delights!
And if you haven’t been to Europe on or during Easter, be prepared for white asparagus to be on your plate daily and at every vegetable stand you see.
Hello Basel, Switzerland – An Escapade with Grandeur
Transitioning from cruise to land, we discovered the vibrant spirit of Basel, our first Swiss encounter. The architectural splendor of Market Square captivated us during our short walking tour, with the city’s bustling rhythm starkly contrasting our tranquil days on the river.
Despite the holiday (Good Monday), Viking masterfully orchestrated an excursion to Rheinfall – Europe’s largest waterfall. Here, we were given the precious gift of time – 90 minutes to immerse ourselves in the majesty of cascades that rivaled the grandiosity of New York’s Letchworth.
Last Stop: Zürich – A Tale of Two Worlds
On our 10th day, we dawned at the Sheraton Zürich Hotel , a modern retreat that served as our base camp for exploring. Swiss efficiency shone through as we were whisked away on a tram to begin our Zürich escapade .
The day unfolded with marvels like the Grossmünster Church, the Limmat River, and a surprising backdrop on our Lake Zürich cruise – the proud, snow-draped Swiss Alps. Fair warning, though; the boat tour, while a photographer’s dream, did have its lulls.
Eddie and I played explorers in the heart of the city, absorbing the stained-glass beauty of the Grossmünster and the Fraumünster’s green spire, adorned with Marc Chagall’s touch.
Amidst sightseeing, our palates embarked on their own voyage – from a hearty Thai buffet at the Blue Monkey to savoring traditional cheese fondue and dreamy raclette, each a Swiss culinary rite of passage.
With costs on the steeper side – dinners and simple refreshments averaging above 25 USD and 6 USD respectively – Switzerland reassured us that some experiences are truly priceless.
Revitalized, Recharged, and Reconditioned
Our voyage with Viking River Cruises culminated in a trove of memories, new friendships, and an expanded gallery on our phones. Yet, what stayed with me was the tranquility amidst the nonstop thrill—a testament to the truly immersive and well-crafted experience that Viking offers.
Having set sail on over 40 cruises, my unwavering affinity for Viking speaks volumes of their devotion to stitching together exceptional adventures for travelers like us.
Does the allure of a river cruise tempt you? Should any questions or musings set sail in your mind, I am all ears and more than happy to guide you through the tides.

Thanks for your descriptive review and beautiful pictures. It looks like a wonderful trip! We are going on the same cruise in June 2020 with the Paris pre-extension. My husband and I have never gone on a cruise vacation.
I was especially interested to read detailed descriptions of the excursions. I have been considering which optional excursions to take so appreciate those descriptions. We have signed up for Bicycling the Moselle on electric bikes, Highlights of the Alps, and one that you chose - Palace of Versailles. Hopefully, the weather will be nice for our Alps excursion as I have only found negative reviews on the weather conditions (but none were taken in the summer months so fingers crossed).
We are very excited, and again, your review is lovely, and we feel more in the know about cruises for having read it.

Thanks so much! We really loved the itinerary and especially the gorgeous wine region. I'm a big fan of Ebikes so I would have loved that Moselle excursion. Have fun. How could you not? ;)
Sunday 2nd of February 2020
You captured all the adventures I am looking forward to. My husband and I are doing this cruise in summer 2021 for our 40th wedding anniversary! I am so excited to experience this area. If you were to tell me one excursion not to miss what would it be? This will be our first Viking cruise and I want to make it very special.
You are in for a real treat, but first, let me wish you a very happy anniversary. My lifelong goal is to hit the 50 years mark. We still have 22 left to go, but its a start. ;) My favorite excursion was the wine tasting in Bernkastel. I love that Viking includes an excursion daily that is included in the price of the cruise. We skipped one of those to sleep in and ended up having a great day on our own. That is the great part of river cruising, you can still see everything on your own if you choose to not go with the group. I will admit that while I love Germany and France, Switzerland is not one of my favorite European countries. It was beautiful, but so expensive and just okay for me. Or it could be that I was just exhausted by the end of the trip, too. Don't stress over anything. Viking takes care of things from start to finish so you can relax and unwind while exploring the world. Thanks for reading.
Thursday 2nd of January 2020
Love your review and the info is great. I'm planning this trip for Dec. 2020 with my sister and maybe some other sister-pairs, specifically for the Christmas Markets. Any idea if Paris-to-Zurich is different/better then Zurich-to-Paris?
Hi Melody, One reason one might choose a particular trip is the pre- and post-extension packages. As we looked, we found the Paris extension was fully booked so I searched until I found one that wasn’t.
Enjoy your trip!
Friday 3rd of January 2020
I really don't know. I liked it in the order we went because we pounded the pavement really hard in Paris and Zurich was a nice break to regroup and unwind before heading home. Congrats! Have a wonderful time!
Sunday 1st of December 2019
This blog post was such a great find. My partner and I are scheduled to do this same cruise in August of 2020 so I was very interested in reading the details of your trip. We loved the VIking river cruise we took in 2016 and are so looking forward to this next adventure. We are hoping to add a 4-5 day train trip through the Swiss Alps post cruise. (If you've done a rail trip, I'd love to hear about it). :-)
You also mentioned a waterfalls reminding you of Letchworth Park in Western NY. We live in R0chester, NY, just 40 minutes away. Small world.
Thanks for your complete description of your trip.
Monday 2nd of December 2019
Awesome! You will love it! The train trip sounds amazing. Here is a link to my Switzerland part of this trip, but I have done Basel for a few days on a previous trip and the train trip up to Jungfrau. Here is that post: https://www.whereverimayroamblog.com/zurich-switzerland-the-viking-river-cruise-land-days/ Rochester, very cool! I was there in the fall of 2018 and on a road trip around upstate NY for 2 1/2 weeks. I loved it! Your beer scene is so good and that Museum of Play is the bomb. ;) I hope to get back there for a longer trip in the future. Safe travels and thanks so much for reading.

REVIEW: VIKING RIVER CRUISE, ‘PARIS TO THE HEART OF NORMANDY,’ HAD ME AT HELLO
As Humphrey Bogart said to Ingrid Bergman on that airport runway in Casablanca, “We’ll always have Paris” …
… so an invitation to board one of Viking’s Longships in the City Of Light had me at ‘hello’
VIKING PRACTICALLY INVENTED RIVER CRUISING
It seems impossible to believe that Viking sailed its first river cruises just 27 years ago. It’s true! In 1997, chartering 4 Russian river cruise ships. In no time at all, Viking invented its ‘Longships’ and began cruising the Rhine, the Danube, the Douro, the Rhone and the Seine. This writer had sailed on 7 itineraries before boarding Viking Radgrid for 8 glorious days from “Paris to the Heart of Normandy”. Never mind me, two of our fellow passengers were on their 13 th Viking cruise with another one booked in December.
WHAT MAKES VIKING SO APPEALING?
From the moment I saw Viking’s Longships on Masterpiece Theater’s Downton Abbey, I was hooked. The gleaming white ship seen floating by spectacular scenery was irresistible. And apparently, I was not alone. Viking introduced Americans to river cruising with innovative ship designs, featuring spacious staterooms with balconies, upscale amenities like heated bathroom floors and supremely comfortable hotel beds all in keeping with its Scandinavian modern décor. Their longships incorporated eco-friendly technologies like hybrid engines and solar panels. Viking’s received all kinds of awards and accolades for everything from its exceptional service and its immersive cultural experiences. And virtually everything from excursions to airport transfers to reduced or even free airfares are included. And of course, there is wine and beer with lunch and dinner (and breakfast if you must start your day with a mimosa).
WHAT MAKES VIKING’S ‘PARIS AND THE HEART OF NORMANDY’ ONE OF OUR FAVORITES EVER?
Our flight from New York landed us in Paris at midday. There, Viking’s ground crew whisked us to our waiting transportation, a big, comfortable minivan. Paris, in the throes of pre-Olympic preparations, isn’t easy to navigate. However, our driver pulled up next to Viking Radgrid in time for a late lunch and immediate access to our Veranda stateroom on Deck 2. The perfect start to a perfect adventure.
VIKING RADGRID LIVES UP TO HER NAME
Like all Viking River Longships, Viking Radgrid is named for a legendary Norse figure. Radgrid, a handmaiden of Oden, the father of the Gods, was a long-haired beautiful woman. She descended from the skies into Norse battles where she determined which soldiers lived and died. Her great power was to determine the fate of mere mortals. Fortunately, the fate of the passengers aboard our Paris to Normandy cruise was to enjoy every minute aboard this glorious Longship.
WHAT’S ON OFFER ABOARD VIKING LONGSHIPS
Once settled into their supremely comfortable staterooms and suites, guests will find themselves in the light-filled public spaces. The comfortable furnishings and floor-to-ceiling windows make both the Lounge and the Dining Room perfect venues to enjoy drinks and meals and group get-togethers. At the bow of the ship, Viking’s signature Aquavit Terrace is a wonderful glass-covered dining area. In good weather dining extends onto the open deck – not a daily feature in late March in northern France. When the sun did come out, Aquavit came to life. For 360 degree views of the scenery, the entire top deck is also a mini-recreation center with a putting green and a walking track.
FELLOW TRAVELERS
One of the highlights of a Viking cruise is the opportunity to connect with fellow travelers. On our “Paris to The Heart of Normandy” voyage, almost every single passenger had shared personal ties to the United States Armed Forces. In a show of hands about 70 percent of us had a parent who had served in World War 2. I was a passenger both of whose parents served in the Canadian Armed Forces. For me and dozens of others, our trip to Normandy on this the 80 th Anniversary of D-Day, was a pilgrimage in their honor no matter where they had served. This common ground facilitated easy conversation, amplified by the exceptional introductory skills of Radgrid’s Program Director, Mia Andrews Drihem. Through these interactions, friendships blossomed, enriching every minute of the trip.
AND HOW WAS THE FOOD?
Ask anyone who has spent any time in France, food is not just part of French culture—it is the cornerstone of French identity. And it’s all wrapped up in the country’s history and its diversity. Meals In France are not just about sustenance. They’re seen as opportunities for enjoyment, socializing and savoring the finer things in life. Food aboard Viking Radgrid had much to live up to and did. French cooking has deep roots in each region of France. In the case of Normandy, that cultural heritage is rich indeed. While Viking creates menus to appeal to American palates every single meal and every single day, the Chef brings France to the table. From blissful croissants to decadent desserts, French food is celebrated at every meal. The “piece de resistance” was a dinner given over to the Food of Normandy. Normandy’s culinary heritage is rich indeed! Influenced by its coastal location and agricultural heritage, Viking Radgrid’s Chef prepared seafood, rich veal stew, pork roast with local apples, a dish called “Poulet Vallée d’Auge” made with chicken, cream, mushrooms and local cider and presented local sausages, cheeses, and patés. And of course there was a dessert selection to rival anything in a Michelin-starred restaurant.
WHAT YOU’LL SEE ALONG THE WAY…
One of the great draws of this itinerary is of course Paris itself. No matter how many times we visit, Paris never disappoints. In the throes of preparation for this summer’s Olympics, the city is a bit torn up. But out of the way of the construction zones, it’s still Paris. Viking Radgrid is your ship as a hotel for a day at the beginning of the trip and a day at the end. Viking offers “Panoramic Paris” to all passengers. Like virtually all Viking excursions, these use luxury buses to ferry passengers on their tours. We hopped aboard “Panoramic Paris” and left the group halfway through for some personal exploration. Optional excursions take guests to The Palace of Versailles, to Montmartre and the one we chose, “Flavors of Paris”. A food tour, this was a wonderful way for foodies, like us, to enjoy a dive into French food, wine and culture. Limited to groups of 10, we immediately found ourselves in delightful company.
PARIS BEHIND US, WE HEAD UPSTREAM TO ENJOY THE PLEASURES OF NORMANDY
First stop, La Roche-Guyon with its impressive 12th Century Chateau. If you wish, on offer is a tour offering a glimpse of French Chateau life. We chose to wander through the delightfully restored gardens filled with white blossoming trees and masses of white daffodils. Aboard ship this day is given over to Painters. A Painting Class produced passengers’ masterpieces for a minor fee. A lecture about Painters along the Seine, a covered the Impressionists who lived and painted there—Pissarro, Renoir, Monet and, at the end of his life, Vincent Van Gogh. That afternoon, we sailed a short distance to Auvers-sur-Oise, made famous as the final and tragically brief home of Van Gogh. During his 70 days there, he painted 74 paintings. He is buried next to the fields he so imaginatively painted. Day three brought us to Rouen. This wonderful small city, the “Capital of Normandy, is a treat! It’s glorious Cathedral of Notre Dame may look familiar. Claude Monet painted it no less than 30 times. More recently, Rouen had a hand in Julia Child’s famous career. At a restaurant called “La Courrone” Julie ate her first meal in France! This meal her love of French food from the very first bite. Located in the Place Du Vieux Marche, –the town square where Joan of Arc met her grim end– Viking’s included walking tour ends directly in front of La Couronne. If you wish you can re-enact Julia’s life-changing lunch for 65 Euros.
THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE TRIP FOR MANY, THE NORMANDY BEACHES COME NEXT
Viking goes out of its way to salute the heroes of June 6th. There are two excursions here. One is to Omaha Beach, site of the American Armed Forces landing on D-Day. A Memorial Service presided over by passengers from America’s military is a moving tribute. The second excursion is offered to the British and Canadian landing beaches. An All Things Cruise tip: Because this writer had a personal connection to the Canadian forces, we opted to take the latter excursion. We were fewer in number for sure. But our excursion includes an extraordinary extra that’s not part of the American experience. We visited Bayeux, a magnificent little town home to the Bayeux Tapestry, a UNESCO “Memory of the World”. I would be hard-pressed to choose which tour to take. Amazingly, at this writing, there was still space available in July aboard the four longships that ply the Seine.
PEACEFUL PLEASURES ROUND OUT VIKING’S RETURN TO PARIS
After yesterday’s emotional visit to Normandy’s beaches, we’re docked at everyone’s picture-perfect idea of a village in France, Les Ondelys. Dominated by the Fortification that secured Normandy for Richard the Lionhearted, last minute souvenirs and gifts here got high marks from many fellow passengers. Our final full day on Viking Radgrid, we dock in Le Pecq. An hour from Le Petit Palais, the drop off point for today’s all-day shuttle buses to central Paris, Le Pecq gave us a chance to visit Chateau Malmaison, the home of Empress Josephine Bonaparte, wife of Napoleon. Years of French history are peeled back as you wander through rooms filled with the couple’s personal belongings. The tales about each of them are simply astonishing. Example: Josephine, whose name was changed from Rose by Napoleon, never smiled in a single portrait. She had bad teeth.
That night, those of us who can never see enough of the City of Light, boarded another vessel. Proceeded by a farewell Cocktail Party and an early dinner, we travelled into Paris, boarded a river cruiser and passed the Eiffel Tower during one of its hourly evening “light shows”. Somehow it was the perfect ending to Viking’s perfectly wonderful “Paris and the Heart of Normandy”

A Zürich, Switzerland Land Trip With Viking River Cruise
D uring our unforgettable Paris to the Swiss Alps cruise with Viking River Cruises, my husband (Eddie) and I found ourselves in the captivating city of Zürich, Switzerland. Although I had been to Switzerland before, Zürich was an unexplored gem. Viking River Cruises seamlessly transported us from the cruise ship to the hotel, and later to the airport, as part of their all-inclusive package.
Zürich bewitched us with its mesmerizing beauty and undeniable charm, despite being notoriously expensive. Over the course of our two-day stay, we eagerly immersed ourselves in the city’s delights, making the most of the complimentary walking tour and invigorating boat ride organized by Viking River Cruises. Allow me to share a glimpse of what awaits you on your visit to Zürich.
Read more about the 12 day river cruise here.
Zürich Scenery
Breathtaking scenery unfurls in every direction in Zürich. Whether it be the grandeur of the architectural masterpieces or the vibrant façades of historical buildings, the snow-capped Swiss Alps serving as a backdrop or the enchanting cobblestone streets that wound their way through the city, there is no shortage of picturesque moments that will prompt your camera to work overtime.
Zürich is an incredible city to explore on foot. Without even realizing it, we covered an impressive seven miles in a single day, diligently recorded by our trusty Fitbit. Such was the pleasure derived from our stroll that the concept of distance faded away, leaving us fully engrossed in the awe-inspiring ambiance that unfolded at every turn.
The Food in Zürich
Switzerland is renowned for its exquisite culinary offerings, with one of my personal favorites being cheese. Everywhere you go, you’ll encounter a plethora of exotic cheese choices. During my visit, indulging in authentic Swiss cheese fondue at the Swiss Chuchi Restaurant , nestled in the heart of the old town, was a must for me and my companion Eddie.
We opted for the traditional recipe, combining Vaudois cheese, white wine, cherry liquor, and garlic, resulting in a gastronomic delight that exceeded all expectations.
Another popular cheese delicacy in Zürich is raclette, which has recently gained popularity even in American eateries. While exploring the town, we noticed numerous raclette shops scattered around, its tantalizing aroma captivating our senses well before catching sight of it.
It’s worth noting that dining in Zürich can be quite costly. Simple meals often came with a hefty price tag of $24, and even a small bottled soda would cost between $4 and $7 at our hotel. Surprisingly, beer turned out to be more economical than both water and soda.
However, in the old town, we stumbled upon a gem called Blue Monkey —a delightful Thai restaurant boasting chic decor and offering a lunch buffet priced at $26 per person. I wholeheartedly recommend this establishment for an exquisite culinary experience.
Overall, Switzerland’s gastronomic offerings, particularly its cheese creations, exceeded all expectations, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of my culinary adventure in this beautiful country.
Parade Square
Eddie and I thoroughly enjoyed strolling through Paradeplatz (Parade Square) located in downtown Zürich. This upscale district is renowned for its exceptional shopping opportunities and the chance to observe people in action.
Parade Square places fashion and accessories at center stage, while home accents come in a close second.
If you happen to be staying outside the downtown area, fret not as getting there is incredibly convenient via the tram system. Coming from someone who seldom relies on public transportation, I can attest to its ease of use.
Tram stations provide instructions in English and accept credit cards. They are maintained well, operate efficiently, and offer a superb means of traversing Zürich. As you journey through the city, do observe the dignified architecture and stunning floral displays that grace its streets.
Lake Zürich
During our Viking River post-cruise excursion, we had the pleasure of embarking on a delightful boat ride around the picturesque Lake Zurich. The boat tour commences from Bürkliplatz and extends for approximately 90 minutes.
With both indoor and outdoor seating options, passengers are treated to breathtaking views of the serene lake and majestic, snow-capped mountains.
Our route led us to the charming medieval town of Rapperswil, featuring a captivating 12th-century castle gracefully perched on a hillside across the lake. If desired, passengers had the flexibility to disembark in Rapperswil and catch a later boat back into town.
Undoubtedly, the boat ride boasts exceptional scenery, allowing guests to relish the rejuvenating fresh air. Moreover, this memorable experience came at no cost for Viking River Cruise guests, ensuring that you seize the opportunity to partake in it.
Our Zürich Hotel
During our Viking River Cruise, we had the pleasure of being accommodated at the Sheraton Zürich Hotel , an elegant and sophisticated establishment situated in a cosmopolitan district. The rooms provide a comfortable sitting area, heavenly beds, an ergonomic desk and work area, a mini-fridge, and a refreshing shower, ensuring a pleasant stay.
To the delight of cruise ship guests, Viking offers a complimentary breakfast in a private space at the hotel, which proved to be a significant money-saving opportunity. Moreover, the Sheraton Hotel’s convenient location near the Toni-Areal tram station opens up a plethora of possibilities for exploring the city.
Zürich, Switzerland: One for the Books!
Zürich itself is known for its stunning scenery, making it a lovely city to visit. As part of Switzerland, a truly breathtaking country with an abundance of attractions, Zürich stands out as my favorite city thus far.

VIKING RIVER CRUISES Pre- and Post-Cruise Land Package Extensions
LOIRE VALLEY PRE-CRUISE EXTENSION 3 Nights from $999 per person Day 1 | Fly to Paris. We meet you at the airport and transport you to the first-class Le Méridien Etoile (or similar)*. The evening is yours to relax or enjoy a romantic dinner in the "City of Lights." Day 2 | After breakfast, check out of your Paris hotel and begin your ride through the French countryside. Our first stop is the city of Orléans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This city’s long history includes everyone from the Druids, Gauls and Romans to Attila to the famous Maid of Orléans, Jeanne d’Arc. Later, during the Renaissance, the area became a fashionable location for châteaux, and the University of Orléans achieved great prestige. When France colonized part of North America, they honored Orléans by naming a certain city La Nouvelle Orléans, or New Orleans. See some of the city’s sights, including the university, the botanic garden and Jeanne d’Arc’s childhood home (now a museum), then take some free time to explore on your own or get some lunch. In the afternoon we will continue to Tours, where you check in to the superior first-class Clarion Chateau Belmont (or similar) for a 2-night stay. Relax on your own this evening. (B) Day 3 | After breakfast, set off on a guided tour of Loire Valley châteaux, including walks through two of the best-known and most beautiful of these grand houses, Chambord and Chenonceau—plus along the way you will catch views of several prominent châteaux and learn about their history. Your first guided tour is of Chambord. Built by François I, a great admirer of Leonardo da Vinci, in the early 16th century, the structure is reminiscent of the Tuscan style, centered around a magnificent double spiral staircase. Chambord was later greatly expanded by Louis XIV; it has hundreds of apartments, each equipped with two rooms and its own fireplace, plus grand royal apartments and an elaborate rooftop terrace offering panoramic views of its vast parklands. After your tour, stop in Amboise to see its hilltop Chateau Royal and take free time or grab a bite before proceeding to Chenonceau for a tour of one of the world’s most beautiful estates. The grand castle, built beside the Cher River in the 16th century by the wealthy Bohier family, was confiscated by the same François I, who enjoyed many festive times there, as did his heir Henry II and Henry’s queen, Catherine de’ Medici. Toward the end of the 16th century a new wing was built that stretched across the river with graceful arches, a sumptuous ballroom and a kitchen with convenient docking facilities for groceries to arrive by boat. The last French sovereign to stay in Chenonceau was Louis XIV in 1650. The house has been relatively well cared-for, and after serving as a hospital for wounded soldiers during World War I, it has been completely restored, including the lovely formal gardens. Drive back to Tours for dinner. (B) Day 4 | After breakfast, check out of your hotel and enjoy a guided exploration of Tours, including the main cathedral and some of the city’s many parks and bridges, before beginning your scenic ride to Bordeaux. Stop at Poitiers for a brief tour of this picturesque medieval city, once capital of the Vienne region, which features well-preserved Romanesque architecture and Baptistère Saint-Jean, thought to be the oldest Christian church in France. Take some free time to look around a bit or grab lunch before continuing on to Bordeaux to embark your river cruise ship. (B) The following meals are included: B = Breakfast *Airport meet & greet transfers included when air is purchased from Viking Cruises. NOTE. Explore More pricing is based on extension hotel check-in date. Extension availability is limited and some restrictions apply with regard to departure date and cruise direction. PARIS — POST CRUISE EXTENSION 3 Nights from $799 per person Day 1 | After breakfast, disembark and proceed to the Gare de Bordeaux-Saint Jean station for a fantastic ride on France’s high-speed TGV line. When you arrive at Paris Montparnasse, we will transfer you to the first-class Le Méridien Étoile (or similar), located minutes from the legendary Champs Elysées. (B) Day 2 | This morning, enjoy a guided walking tour of Paris’s Marais district on the Right Bank. You will see aristocratic neighborhoods dating back as far as the 13th century as well as the historic Jewish area and trendy art galleries. Your afternoon and evening are at leisure—visit museums like the Pompidou, Orsay or Picasso, admire historic buildings like Fontainebleau and the Paris Opera. Experience the world-famous Louvre, home of da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” the “Winged Victory of Samothrace,” I.M. Pei’s iconic glass pyramids and much more. (B) Day 3 | You have a full day to further explore the “City of Light.” Stroll through Montmartre, shop along the Champs Elysées, ride up to the top of the Eiffel Tower and sample some of the famous French cuisine. You might like to take a Seine cruise aboard a bâteau-mouche this evening to see some of the city’s landmarks and lovely bridges. (B) Day 4 | After breakfast, check out of your hotel and proceed to the airport for your return flight.* (B) The following meals are included: B = Breakfast *Airport meet & greet transfers included when air is purchased from Viking Cruises. Where Does the Viking River Cruise Dock in Paris?
By Robert Palmer
If you’re planning a Viking River Cruise to Paris, you might be wondering where the ship docks. This is an important question as it can affect your travel plans and overall experience in the city. In this article, we’ll explore where the Viking River Cruise docks and what you can expect when you arrive.
The Viking River Cruise typically docks at Quai de Grenelle, located in the 15th arrondissement of Paris. This is a prime location that offers stunning views of the Eiffel Tower and easy access to some of the city’s top attractions.
What Can You Expect When You Arrive?
Upon arrival at Quai de Grenelle, you’ll be greeted by friendly staff who will help you disembark and guide you to your transportation. From here, it’s easy to explore the city on your own or join one of Viking’s guided tours.
Top Attractions Near Quai de Grenelle
- Eiffel Tower: As mentioned earlier, Quai de Grenelle offers spectacular views of this iconic landmark. If you want to get up close and personal with the tower, it’s just a short walk away.
- Trocadero Gardens: These gardens offer yet another stunning view of the Eiffel Tower. They’re also home to several museums and galleries.
- River Seine: Of course, no trip to Paris is complete without a cruise down the River Seine. Fortunately, Quai de Grenelle is right on the banks of the river, making it easy to catch a boat.
