15 of the best things to do in England

Experience the best of England with these top things to do © SolStock / Getty Images

With its wild coastline, ancient history and cultural contributions that have left a mark around the world, England is one of the world’s most alluring destinations.

And while the famous landmarks and 24/7 buzz of London will always seduce first-time visitors , there are a ton of unique attractions outside the capital that deserve your attention.

From almost-cinematic hikes in the Lake District to the jaunty street art of Bristol, amazing adventures can be had up and down this green and pleasant land. The weather is always changeable, but England’s status as a world-class destination is never in doubt. Here are the best things to do in England.

People walk some city walls towards a large Gothic cathedral

1. Walk the magnificent medieval walls of York

Many historic cities in Europe retain their original city walls, but few are in as good condition as the 4m (13ft) stone walls surrounding the English city of York . Though the first fortifications were built by the Romans, the current walls are around 700 years old and date back to the medieval period. Stroll atop the walls, and you'll get some stunning views of this city’s soaring spires and crooked rooftops, especially the section behind the grandiose York Minster .

2. Discover the street art of Banksy’s old neighborhood in Bristol

Take a walk through the colorful streets of Bristol’s Stokes Croft neighborhood to see the city’s creative spirit in full flow. The former hometown of enigmatic artist Banksy, Stokes Croft was also his original canvas, and many of his works can still be seen amid the area’s quirky pubs, cool cafes and vintage boutiques.

From classics such as Mild Mild West (with its Molotov-cocktail toting teddy bear) to lesser-known works such as The Rose Trap on Thomas Street North, Banksy’s influence is indelible.

Local tip: Explore more of Banksy's oeuvre on a superbly detailed tour by Where The Wall .

Revellers gather in a stone circle to greet the rising sun

3. Make like a druid and catch the sunrise at Stonehenge

Bizarre and mysterious, the prehistoric stone circle at Stonehenge is one of England’s most evocative sights and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – befitting a site said to date back as far as 3000 BCE. Most visitors gaze at the 50-tonne stones from behind the perimeter fence, but with enough planning, you can arrange an early-morning or evening tour of Stonehenge and gain access to the inner ring itself. The site takes on an ethereal quality as the golden morning sunlight slants between the stones.

Planning tip: You can enter the circle for a sunrise ceremony for the summer or winter solstice for free as part of the Managed Open Access days.

4. Hit the world’s greatest museums in London

Working out how to spend your time in London when you only have a few days is an almost impossible task as there’s so much to see and do , but it would be remiss to not visit some of its many remarkable museums. Best of all, the majority can be visited free of charge .

From big-hitters such as the British Museum and Kensington greats including the Natural History Museum  and Science Museum to uniquely London-centric spaces such as Covent Garden ’s London Transport Museum , you’ll never be bored on a rainy afternoon in the English capital.

Four cyclists peddle through a village

5. Cycle through the heart of England

The Cotswolds are lush Olde England at its quaint best, and there are few better ways to explore this patchwork of chocolate-box villages than on two wheels on a warm summer’s day. Spread out over six English counties, this expanse of rolling hills features meandering roads, bucolic landscapes and hundreds of cozy country pubs where you can relax with a pint of real ale at the end of a long ride. For a deep dive into this quintessentially English corner of Britain, hire a bike and tackle the 102-mile Cotswold Way from Chipping Campden to Bath.

6. Catch a play in Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare's hometown

The famous-name theaters of London’s West End are the place to catch all the latest shows, but for a true taste of English drama, head up to Stratford-upon-Avon , the one-time home of William Shakespeare himself. Not only is this quaint riverside town a lovely place to explore, but it’s also the official home of the Royal Shakespeare Company , which stages consistently excellent interpretations of The Bard’s most well-known and not-so-well-known works.

Sunbathers and surfers enjoy the beach during a sunny summer's day in Cornwall.

7. Surf the waves of Cornwall's wild coastline

While it might not have the sun-kissed tropical scenes of the Gold Coast or Hawaii , Cornwall’s ragged coastline attracts thousands of surfers every summer, drawn by England’s biggest waves. Fistral Beach in Newquay is the epicenter of English surfing life, and its beach breaks produce powerful, hollow waves under a wide range of conditions. Newquay is also Cornwall’s biggest party town, so after a day of surfing, you can let your hair down in one of its many thumping pubs, clubs and bars.

Detour:  If time and budget allow, consider exploring further with a visit to the Isles of Scilly . St Mary’s (the biggest of the 140 tiny islands) is accessible by ferry (or helicopter) on a day trip.

8. Take a sea-sprayed train ride in Devon

England was the birthplace of rail travel, and its historic rail lines provide some spectacular opportunities to see the country at its best. For a quick taste, take the Riviera Line from Exeter to Teignmouth, a journey of just over an hour that passes by some of Devon’s most beautiful coastal scenery.

The highlight is the stretch by the Regency resort town of Dawlish, where the train hugs the seafront so closely you can almost taste the spray of the waves as they roll back and forth against the shore. Afterward, settle in on the beach in Teignmouth and dip your toes in the English Channel.

9. See Nelson’s famous flagship up close in Portsmouth

England is home to some of the world’s most famous cathedrals, castles and mansions, but one of its most breathtaking artificial sites is a ship that’s been sitting in dry dock for over 100 years. HMS Victory was Lord Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar – arguably the Royal Navy’s greatest-ever maritime victory – and you can explore its enormous wooden frame at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard . The Victory first launched in 1765, and it’s amazing that this 250-year-old ship still exists.

Planning tip:  The engaging audio guide telling the story of Nelson’s final moments is highly recommended.

Shoppers wander along a street with brightly colored shop fronts and rails of clothes

10. Get lost in the lanes of Brighton

Brighton is unashamedly alternative, and it’s hard not to fall in love with the place when you enter the quirky warren of roads known as the Lanes. Nearby, the North Laine district is the bohemian heart of Brighton, and its vibrant streets are packed with vegan cafes, espresso bars, chaotic pubs, record stores, bric-a-brac shops and vintage clothing boutiques. Spend an afternoon perusing the dusty shelves of Snoopers Paradise before ordering a local cask ale from the Great Eastern’s narrow and always-lively bar.

11. See a gig in Manchester, England's indie music capital

From Oasis to Joy Division and The Smiths, Manchester  has produced some of the UK’s most iconic bands, and the city's musical heritage is still very much alive today. You'll find a plethora of fabulous venues for live music dotted around the city, so be sure to catch a show when evening comes. From the sweat-soaked backrooms of the Eagle Inn to the ornate Albert Hall , you're guaranteed to find a spot to tune into your fave musical genre.

Local tip: Manchester's latest cultural center, Aviva Studios, is the home of Factory International , which opened in mid-2023 with a vision for reinvigorating the city's creative energy.

12. Hike England’s biggest mountain in the Lake District

William Wordsworth wrote many wonderful words about the Lake District , but it’s unlikely that he ever scaled Scafell Pike (unlike his sister, Dorothy). Rising to 978m (3209ft) above sea level, this is England’s highest mountain, and it offers panoramic views from its craggy summit. You can see the peaks of Yr Wyddfa (Mt Snowdon) in Wales and the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland on a clear day. The rocky Wasdale path is the most popular route to the top, and the 4.2km (2.6-mile) journey should take around three hours to complete.

Planning tip: Hikers and peak baggers should plan on sticking around for a bit – the Lake District has some of the best hikes in the UK .

Photographers capturing the Ribblehead Viaduct in the Yorkshire Dales

13. Go for a pint in England’s most remote pub in the Yorkshire Dales

England is one of Europe’s most densely packed countries, and locals place a lot of value on unwinding with a quiet pint. Few places are better for that than the Tan Hill Inn on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park . At 1732ft (528m) above sea level, it’s the highest pub in the British Isles and has been known to be completely snowed in during winter blizzards. Still, the surrounding North Yorkshire landscape has a bleak beauty about it, and this remote spot is a perfect place to get away from it all.

14. Eat fish and chips on the harbor at Whitby

There are few more English experiences than eating fish and chips in a seaside town. And while the northern fishing village of Whitby is more famous for its connections to Bram Stoker and Dracula , it’s also home to some of the finest and freshest fish and chips in the country.

Order a fresh haddock and chips from Quayside or the Magpie Cafe and sit back and admire Whitby’s famous harbor, which sweeps from a cluster of 18th-century fishing cottages along the East Cliff up to the town's famous ruined hilltop Abbey . Just watch out for mischievous seagulls who'll always have an eye on your food.

Planning tip:  Buying an on-the-spot membership to a heritage organization like English Heritage or the National Trust is good value if you plan to visit lots of historic sites. It includes free admission, as well as information handbooks and car parking.

15. Embrace Beatlemania in Liverpool

Yes, there’s a whole lot more to Liverpool than the Fab Four, but the city is stuffed with myriad museums, pop culture landmarks and subtle references to what was arguably the world’s greatest ever band. Start with the Beatles Story followed by a night at the legendary Cavern Club to get your Fab on. Don’t forget that some of the most unique Beatles sites are out of the city center.

Detour: Check out the real-life Penny Lane on the Magical Mystery Tour or, even better, take a tour of the basement of the Casbah Coffee Club to see where the Beatles played their very first gig in 1959.

23+ Ideas for Fun Days Out in the UK for 2024

I wanted to make a list of the best days out in the UK, given that we haven’t got long of the summer left.

It’s time to get out there and make the most of the best UK days out before those dark nights draw in. I’ve already pencilled in a few days out in Wales (camping) and I’d love to see Stonehenge before the summer’s out too. What are your UK day out dreams for 2023?

day out in the uk

I guess ‘fun days out in the UK’ depends on your definition of fun, but I wanted to put together some of my faves, along with some of my UK bucket list. Also, it totally depends on where you live in the UK as to whether these are ‘doable’ on a day out, but the handy map will help.

Hope this gets you feeling inspired!

Ideas for Fun Days Out in the UK

Here are over 20 of the best UK days out for you to enjoy. Treat this list like a UK fun day tick list.

1. Cycling in the New Forest

I really do love the New Forest. It’s so chilled and lovely – unless you go on a busy summer weekend – and there’s so many lovely places to see and be.

New Forest Wedding

I’ve put together a list of the best things to see in the New Forest . And, if you want to spend the weekend in the New Forest – I have a guide for that too.

Also, if you fancy extending your trip and staying over, then take a look at some of the New Forest glamping spots on offer. Imagine going to sleep surrounded by so much nature – amazing!

One of the best things about a day out in the New Forest, is checking out the many cute New Forest pubs . I wrote about them for Day Out in England and loved driving around photographing them all.

2. Walking in Cheddar Gorge

Exploring Cheddar Gorge

I went to Cheddar Gorge as a kid – it’s a great place for children to learn to appreciate the natural world. You can go down in the caves, wander the streets and enjoy the local produce (CHEESE!) and hike in the hills too.

Last year I went on a road trip to the Mendip Hills and despite the rain, had a lovely time exploring the area. Plan your hike before you go, and take your raincoat!

There are some great ideas for Cheddar Gorge walks over on Day Out in England. Click the link for a looksee.

3. Road trip in the villages of the Cotswolds

I can definitely recommend a day in the Cotswolds, but, even better, stay and enjoy a 3-day road trip in the Cotswolds instead. I got to go to the zoo, stay at a spa hotel, and another hotel on a hill with beautiful views. I also got to go to Cirencester, to Bibury and to the Cotswold Wildlife Park.

campervan trips in the uk

There’s just something about discovering the Cotswolds for yourself, with your own wheels and under your own steam. Much better than any sort of public transport.

I was genuinely amazed at how wonderful the Cotswolds are. If you only have a day to explore the Cotswolds, there’s still plenty to get up to.

4. Dine at The Pig Hotels

days out in the uk

There are six different Pig Hotels around the UK, and yes, you can sleep over and make a weekend of it at Hampshire, Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Kent and Cornwall. Or, at some of them you can just hang out for the day.

I love the one in Hampshire – it was the first one I ever went to. You might need to save your pennies to visit here, but it’s definitely a great location for a special occasion. Think of it as money you’ve saved on travelling abroad.

5. Visit the Lake District

Lake district UK days out

Can’t believe I still haven’t been to the Lake District.

I know, shocker right?

Especially as I’ve lived in Manchester and Sheffield for almost four years of my life. There’s so much to do and enjoy in the Lake District, I’ve actually got an article on my other site, Day Out in England, about the many Lake District activities you can enjoy while you’re there, written by a local expert.

Take a look!

READ MORE on Yorkshire

I still need to write more about Yorkshire – crazy I haven’t seeing as I’m actually ‘half Yorkshire’! My grandparents lived there and I spent many happy summers with them, on their farm.

6. Watergate Hotel

The Watergate Hotel near Newquay in the south of England is my UK dream. It’s a hotel, right on the coast of Cornwall, but you can also buy a day pass to enjoy the luxurious facilities.

Another one added to my UK wishlist.

7. Relax at Bath’s spas

Bath is one of the best UK cities for a day out. It’s that bit quieter than the big cities too, so good for that social distancing.

visit britain big day out

I’ve written a guide to a day in Bath , that really gets down to what you should do. Basically though, the spa, Sally Lunn’s, some shopping, and a nice hotel to top it off – if you’ve got the time to extend your day.

8. Go sightseeing in Belfast

The hop on hop off Belfast City Tour is one of the best ways to see the city in a relatively short amount of time. You can hop off at the cities biggest attractions – there are 19 iconic locations to choose between, or, just go to them all.

visit britain big day out

The ticket let’s you pass through the once no go areas and between the peacelines and walls of Belfast too. An easy way to explore the city!

9. Eat your way around Padstow

I have very fond memories of Padstow as a child. We visited on holiday and I can remember eating fish and chips while watching the boats and people go by.

days out in the uk

It’s such a pretty fisherman’s village that’s adapted to be one of the top places to visit on a day out in the UK. While you’re in Padstow you can check out the National Lobster Hatchery, the Camel Trail Bike Path and the nearby Tintagel Castle is a popular spot too.

9. Sunbathe or kitesurf on West Wittering Beach

West Wittering Beach is about a 20-minute drive from me, and I swear it’s one of the best beaches in the UK. I was genuinely amazed when I first visited. White sand beaches and little beach huts galore.

There’s a great little cafe there called Drift – food is fantastic there!

Living in Southsea

But, it’s the beach that’s the star attraction. And my friend Jayne has just been in lockdown so if you need some up-to-date advice check out her post – A Social Distancing Day Out at West Wittering Beach .

If you live anywhere near the south of England, I’d definitely recommend West Wittering Beach for a UK day out.

10. Come to Southsea!

Southsea is totally underrated. I love living in Southsea and genuinely every week feel like I’ve discovered another reason to love it here.

Southsea Promenade

Come on down and you can enjoying our huge pebble Southsea beach , you can pick up a great coffee, have a BBQ, check out the Common and explore the shops. We also have the D-Day Museum, the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and Southsea Castle too. And there are some GREAT restaurants in Southsea too.

If you’re looking for a socially distanced day out by the sea – Southsea is a great shout, and way better than the busyness of Brighton. Here’s a guide to 48 hours in Southsea to show you what you’re missing.

LIving in Southsea

There are some great paddle boarding spots in Southsea , and with the beach and all, we have great wild swimming in Southsea too!

11. Go on a Scotland road trip

A road trip round Scotland, in the north of the country, sounds about perfect to me right now. I’ve been to Scotland a few times – to Edinburgh mostly – but I did do a road trip from Edinburgh to Dumfries last year which was fun.

days out in the uk

If you’re planning a Scotland road trip I’d definitely recommend going to the Isle of Skye . It was wonderful up there, and I went in January!

I went to the Outer Hebrides for a week to see more of the country. We were wild camping in the Outer Hebrides which, sounds a bit crazy. It was. It was sooo windy, but still, we had a great time. Proper adventure!

12. Visit Durdle Door

This isn’t a secret day out in the UK, in fact, Durdle Door is one of the most popular places to visit on the South Coast. It’s heaving down there on a summer’s day. But, it’s popular for a reason. Durdle Door is a magical part of England’s coastline.

days out in the uk

I’d totally recommend doing a Jurassic Coast road trip to Durdle Door. Or, if you have time try spending a weekend in Dorset and following my awesome itinerary to really make the most of it.

13. Go to the Big Smoke, London

I lived in London for 7 years, and have amazing memories of nights out, weekends wandering and meeting up with friends. I even threw a Harry Potter hen party for my friend once there.

It really was THE BEST.

days out in london

I still get a thrill going back to London– to check out the unique fun of Shoreditch , wander the South Bank, or just explore my old haunts. It definitely feels like a different version of me who used to live there. Can’t actually believe I did the London triathlon once, just the once.

Sometimes I need to look up my own advice when I go to London though. My articles on where to visit on a London day trip, my money saving tips , and advice for a special occasion in London too. Once, I had a London Pass for the weekend, and got to ‘play tourist’ while I lived there – it was great!

14. Outdoor sports in Wales

The Welsh coastline is absolutely stunning, i f you can get it when it’s not raining . The Pembrokeshire Coast has some amazing beaches, and I’ve just found out about the Llŷn Peninsula – also absolutely stunning.

There are plenty of companies and opportunities offering mountain biking, climbing, hiking and even trampolining in Wales. You could have a lot of fun days out there, or stay over to really get stuck in.

The Brecon Beacons are best if you want action and adventure.

And if you’ve ever thought you wanted to see an old Italian town in a Welsh village, then Portmeirion if your answer. And of course, Mount Snowdon is always there for the climb too.

15. Road trip to Lincolnshire

Watch my video on Lincolnshire here

Visiting the Lincolnshire Coast for the weekend really opened my eyes to the amazing coastline up there. Me and mum had a great time – make sure you visit the Petworth House and beaches too.

16. Visit Bristol for the day

This is a great itinerary for 24 hours in Bristol , written by me. From walking across the Clifton Bridge, to wandering round Clifton, and visiting the zoo – there’s loads of fun things to do on a day out in Bristol.

weekend in bristol

17. Wander round Brighton

Brighton is one of the most popular places for a day out in the UK. I’m lucky enough to have been loads of times, from London, but I recently went for the weekend and had a great time.

Best days out in UK

Get inspiration for your day out in the UK from this weekend guide to Brighton .

Brighton is well connected to the south of England, making it the perfect choice for a UK day out.

18. Head over to the Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight can make for one of the best day trips in the UK, if you live in the south. Otherwise you might want to stay a bit longer – I have a great weekend itinerary for the Isle of Wight here. There are some great restaurants on the Isle of Wight worth making your trip a little longer for.

Exploring the Isle of Wight

Check out some of the best days out on the Isle of Wight in my video

If you do want to stay over you can check out the Isle of Wight glamping spots , and in particular, the Modulogs at Tom’s Eco Lodge .

There are so many fun things to do on the Isle of Wight, but if you want it narrowed down, then check out my day on the Isle of Wight itinerary here. You can easily get the hovercraft over from Southsea to Ryde, and explore the Isle of Wight from there. And while you’re in Ryde, it makes sense to enjoy a day out in Ryde too!

I’ve written a massive list of 68 of the top attractions on the Isle of Wight – check it out for more travel inspiration!

19. Relax at a spa

The spas opened a few weeks ago now, although I still haven’t ventured out to one. How do you feel about them?

Pennyhill Park Spa

Could make for a wonderful day out in the UK, but I’d stick to the fancier ones to start. How about Ragdale Hall, or the Pennyhill Park Hotel Spa ?

I’d phone ahead to make sure of their Covid strategies before you go.

20. Explore Stratford Upon Avon

I never see Stratford Upon Avon on best UK days out lists – why is that?

hen party stratford upon avon

Stratford Upon Avon is a wonderful market town, known as the birth place of Shakespeare. I once organised a Stratford Upon Avon hen party there for my friend.

The Avon runs through, making for a beautiful backdrop, and there’s lots to see in Stratford Upon Avon, beyond Shakespeare.

21. Explore more of Birmingham

Visit Birmingham with a twist this summer and go all Peaky Blinders themed. As well as the usual shopping, bars and restaurants you can visit some of the locations for the TV show.

View from my Hotel Indigo bedroom

I joined a tour for my Peaky Blinders weekend in Birmingham , but I doubt that’s running right now. Instead, you can look up the hot spots and make your own Brummy gang tour.

22. Big day out in Guernsey

How about a day out in Guernsey for your next trip in the UK? Check out Highland2Hammocks’ guide to a Guernsey day trip here . Not technically in the UK, it is a self-governing British Crown dependency with its own parliament and its own government, but it’s only a short flight or ferry over the water so let’s include it in this list of the top places to visit in the UK.

23. Day out in Rye

Check out my guide to what to do in Rye to help plan your day out!

More days out in the UK

Belfast, Oxford, Cambridge, Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Scilly Isles , South Downs, Norfolk, Margate AND SO MUCH MORE!

This has totally turned into a UK day out wishlist for me, I mean, I even want to go back to the places I’ve already been. It feels like the more I see of the UK, the more there is to see.

I still want to go to Lundy Island, to the Isle of Mann, to see more of Kent, and to dive deeper into Hampshire where I live.

With the current travel restrictions this is an amazing opportunity to see more of the UK, and to spend the money you would’ve spent on going abroad, in your own country instead.

Take a trip to the cities of Canterbury, Norwich, Durham, Lincoln and York to admire their incredible cathedrals. Climb up the tower at York Minster and you’ll be able to take in the cityscape from a different angle.

Rose window, York Minster

Visit Oxford, named ‘the city of dreaming spires’ by Victorian poet Matthew Arnold, to wander its ancient streets, admiring its impressive university buildings and churches.

England, Scotland and Wales are home to several impressive castles with long histories, some still inhabited today. For an exciting day out, take a tour of Windsor Castle in England, the oldest occupied castle in the world, built in the 11th century.

Up in Scotland, explore the rugged Eilean Donan Castle in the Scottish Highlands, built way back in the 13th century. Or head off on a road trip around Wales and tick off Conwy Castle and Caernarfon Castle, also constructed in the 13th century.

If you fancy something totally different, enjoy the old-world charm of Britain’s prettiest villages. With thatched cottages, beamed farmhouses and rustic barns, you’re guaranteed to be snap happy on a trip in this part of the world!

British Food And Drink

Somewhere in history, Britain has picked up a bad reputation for its food scene…but it’s entirely unjustified and does not represent how things are today. This small island nation is home to some of the best fresh produce in the world.

Wheat, potatoes, fresh green vegetables, tomatoes, asparagus, apples… the list goes on.

In the north of England, Scotland and Wales, cattle and sheep farming are popular, while in the south of England, the rich grass helps make dairy cows strong.

Lambs in Great Britain

In turn, this produce has been transformed into an exciting gastronomic cuisine by chefs around England, Scotland and Wales. Forget fish and chips wrapped in newspaper, or a hearty pie and mash in the pub… in pubs across Great Britain you can expect to see rack of lamb with celeriac puree, smoked mackerel with fennel and orange and succulent venison with a bitter chocolate sauce.

Gastropub food

The drinks scene has changed over the last 10 years too. As a result of global warming, the south of England is becoming popular with winemakers. Temperatures in regions of France are increasing at an alarming rate, so counties like Sussex, Dorset, Kent, Essex and Hampshire have become popular alternative locations for vineyards. The result? Top class English sparkling wine, that has beaten Champagne in taste tests!

Beautiful vineyards at Albourne Estate, West Sussex

Meanwhile, Scotland and the north of England boasts a thriving gin scene, with distilleries like Rock Rose and The Lakes Distillery flying high in competitions around the world.

Oh, and it goes without saying that Scotland is synonymous with whiskey too! Don’t forget to have a wee dram on your travels.

Memorable Experiences In Great Britain

If you visit Great Britain you’re opening yourself up to enjoying some memorable experiences that are unique to this part of the world.

Head to Go Below in Wales for an adventurous underground experience, which includes zip-lining and climbing through the abandoned slate mines of Snowdonia.

You could hop in the car and drive the North Coast 500 – one of the most popular road trips in Great Britain, which takes you on a 500-mile journey along Scotland’s glorious coastline.

Or how about traversing the circumference of the stone circle at Stonehenge in England, all while being transported back over 4,000 years as you learn about our Neolithic ancestors.

Stonehenge England

There are plenty more unique experiences to enjoy in Great Britain – don’t forget to take a look at our recommendations in England , Scotland and Wales .

Exciting British Cities

One of the top reasons to visit Great Britain is for its fabulously vibrant cities. London is a mega beast of a city, with a population of over 8 million and a diverse range of things to do.

However, we love flying the flag for the less-visited spots too. Take a trip to Birmingham for its expansive network of canals (it actually boasts more miles of canals than Venice!), historic Jewellery Quarter and its Balti Triangle, famed for its flavoursome Indian food.

Birmingham canals

Take a trip to Glasgow in Scotland and dive into its buzzing art and music scenes, world-class museums and learn about celebrated architect and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Visit Wales’ biggest city Cardiff, and watch a gruelling game of rugby at the Principality Stadium, then let your hair down in one of the city’s amazing bars or clubs.

Learn about Norwich’s printing heritage, indulge your inner Potterhead in Edinburgh, admire the stars at Winchester Planetarium and enjoy a fun day at the seaside in Barry in Wales. Great Britain’s cities are varied, vibrant and shouldn’t be missed.

British History

When it comes to history, the United Kingdom is an absolute treasure trove. Along with the royal castles we’ve mentioned, and the ancient stones of Stonehenge, there’s so much more to get stuck into.

We’d recommend a trip to St Albans for a flavour of Roman England, as you get to know the ancient Roman city of Verulamium. If you’re interested in learning more about the Romans, how about a day trip to Bath to see the Roman Baths?

Verulamium, St Albans

You could hike some of the 73 miles of Hadrian’s Wall, which stretches from Wallsend through Carlisle to Bowness-on-Solway.

Hadrian's Wall

For something a little different, head to Holy Island, just off the Northumbrian Coast, where monks settled in AD 635. These days you can see a priory built all the way back in the 12th century!

How about spending the day at a palace or stately home? From Buckingham Palace’s summer opening to Holyrood Palace in Scotland, Britain has plenty to choose from.

Or for a full historical experience, take a trip to London’s British Museum or the Museum of London, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow or the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. You’ll come out with plenty of facts which will complement your travels around Britain.

British Weather

What do you mean, all we talk about is the weather?! Ok, while there may be a little bit of truth in this, it isn’t for the reasons you’re thinking. It doesn’t rain all the time and the sky isn’t always grey. Contrary to popular belief, the weather in Great Britain is pretty good, most of the time.

Torquay Marina

The fact we live on an island does bring a lot of variety though. In general, our summers are warm (reaching highs of around 30 degrees) and our winters are cool (snow and frost are common).

The weather varies by region, with more rain and cloud in the mountainous regions or Wales, Scotland and northern England, and the warmest weather in the southeast of England.

Our favourite months to travel in Great Britain are May, June and September. Temperatures are usually warm, with plenty of sunshine and blue skies. Plus, the schools aren’t on holiday yet, so you can enjoy a more relaxed experience with fewer crowds at popular tourist spots.

The Great Ridge, Peak District, England

British Culture And People

Welcome to the land of village fetes, problems being solved with cups of tea, and more pubs than you could visit in a lifetime!

Great Britain is lovable place, and a lot of that is down to its quirks and the attitude of the people.

The cities tend to offer a feeling of openness – anything goes, within reason! Meanwhile smaller towns and villages are known for being warm and friendly places to visit. In particular, places in the north of England and Scotland are famous for their hospitality. Order a cuppa in a café and you’ll spend half an hour chatting the waitress!

Tea and biscuits

Brits have a dry sense of humour too, based on sarcasm, observation and wit. Outsiders may find it hard to ‘get’ at first, but once you’re in the club, you’ll be rolling on the floor in fits if giggles.

We love Britain for its eccentricity too. From town mayors wearing huge gold chains, to local events with maypoles and morris dancing, and the fact we have bizarre traditions that just keep going – cheese rolling in Gloucestershire anyone? We wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in the world.

We hope you’ve enjoyed hearing our top reasons to visit Great Britain. It’s an incredible place, with so much variety, so what are you waiting for?

If you’re looking for other travel inspiration, don’t forget to see where else we’d recommend in England , Scotland and Wales .

Dear Fellow Travellers

We're thinking of visiting Suzdal on a one-day trip from Moscow this mid-August. We did our homework, and found the best way is to go to Vladimir by train and take a bus to Suzdal. We also checked the fare/timetable with Russian National Railway's official website ( http://pass.rzd.ru ) , then started wondering whether it is worth to book trains in advance. Yes, it's a busy season and we feel safe, but none in our group speaks Russian, and if something happens, we cannot catch the train we booked, all the money will be wasted. So, would we be better off not to book any train and go with the 'suburban' train that does not take booking (incidentally RZD site does not tell us how much it costs - maybe because it is a different operator and we cannot buy the ticket on their site?) Or would you recommend booking trains in advance?

Also, we've been trying to find a bus timetable between Vladimir and Suzdal, but so far we couldn't.

Could anybody help?

Thanks in advance, Ken.

' class=

There are not many suburban trains to Vladimir, and they are usually packed, as any suburban trains to other regions. You trip is going to be very uncomfortable (I know, I've tried if once 'cause experss tickets were sold out). Suggestion: for trip to Vladimir, book a # 7082 train: https://rasp.yandex.ru/thread/7082_0_2000001_g19_4 (or a # 728 train if tickets are not too expensive). For return trip, maybe train # 709.

> RZD site does not tell us how much it costs - maybe because it is a different operator

:))) There is no 'other operator'. RR site just does not sell commuter train tickets.

> bus timetable between Vladimir and Suzdal

https://rasp.yandex.ru/all-transport/vladimir--suzdal . In short , every 30 minutes.

And the last: if possible, allocate 2 days to Suzdal and Vladimir.

' class=

The train you can book on rzd.ru, fast train to Nozhniy Novgorod via Vladimir is nice, comfortable and surely needs to be booked in advance. You can leave early in the morning, and reach Vladimir in under 2 hrs; as opposed to 3+ hrs by a suburban train. It costs like R350-400, (do not remember easily), but fast train is wirth effort.

As for getting the train - station has signs in English, board is in English and even these trains are annonced in English. You can visit the station the day before for orientation... Many people have done that before.

As for going to Suzdal from Vladimir, tgere are plenty of buses, right from train station sq. in Vladimir, but taxi would be faster and easier, esp.for several people, just use Yandex/Gett app.

Thanks a lot, Dmitri and Vasily! You guys are really great - we will definitely book fast trains. One thing which is not urgent - is it cheaper to buy return tickets from Moscow to Vladimir, or the two single/one-way tickets are the same price? In Britain, they are completely different: returns are often cheaper but sometimes two singles are cheaper - very confusing. We hope Russian system is more straightforward. Thanks again, Ken.

You can buy a return ticket only for suburban trains, and it will cost as 2 one-way tickets anyway. For everything else, you just buy 2 singles one by one - simple as it can be :).

Thanks a lot, Dmitri. Glad to know Russian rail system is not so complicated. Cheers, Ken.

And some more thoughts on the matter :).

1. If you don't feel confident, arrive at the station somewhat earlier, like 30 minutes in advance (not 10 like I did). I know half an hour is a bit overkill... just for the peace of mind :).

2. Vladimir trains depart from the Gorky direction dead end platforms (highlited here: http://yandex.ru/maps/213/moscow/?ll=37.662677%2C55.755958&mode=poi&poi%5Bpoint%5D=37.661626%2C55.756222&poi%5Buri%5D=ymapsbm1%3A%2F%2Forg%3Foid%3D188728336151&z=18 ). Do not enter main building, you don't need it.

3. I tend to agree with Vasili's advice about taxi. Suzdal bus staiton is on the outskirts of the town, you'll have either walk to the center (as I did - but I had 2 days instead of one) or wait for the local bus. Taxi will take you straight to the town centre.

I specify that high-speed trains to Vladimir leave from the first high platform. It is in the opposite part of the Kursk railway station than dead-end platforms. Common local trains to Vladimir depart from dead-end platforms.

Thanks everyone. I'm sure we'll have a super time in Suzdal. Cheers, Ken

Music lovers still put those records on as they celebrate Record Store Day: What to know

If you love vinyl, saturday, april 20 is your day, record store day. apparently, many americans do. u.s. music lovers spent $1.4 billion on vinyl in 2023, 10% more than the year before..

visit britain big day out

Vinyl rules on Saturday. That's because it is Record Store Day .

This marks the 17th annual celebration of independent record stores with a slew of special, exclusive releases – available first in stores and for purchase in person. (Eventually, some of the precious vinyl LPs will be available online; and some may later be released on CD or digitally.)

More than 380 special releases will be available on Saturday, including new releases and reissues from a variety of artists spanning Ernest Tubb to 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne . There's also releases from Elton John, Gorillaz, Kristin Hersh, Parliament, Pearl Jam, Sabrina Carpenter and The Who. To see the complete list go to the Record Store Day website .

Why are vinyl records a big deal on Record Store Day 2024?

There's a reason vinyl lovers are rewarded in the age of streaming music. Sales of vinyl records rose 10% in 2023 to $1.4 billion – the format's 17th consecutive year of growth, according to the Recording Industry Association of America .

And for only the second time since 1987, vinyl outsold CDs in units (43 million vinyl, compared to 37 million in CDs), the RIAA says. Sales of CDs did increase 11% to $537 million. Streaming still accounted 84% of U.S. recorded music revenue, the RIAA says.

Record Store Day 2024: What you need to celebrate superbly

No surprise, the top selling vinyl artist in the U.S. in 2023 was Taylor Swift, who had the top three sellers – "1989 (Taylor's Version)" was No. 1 – and five of the top seven, according to Luminate Data .

Swifties, there's no Record Store Day specials for you like last year, when Swift dropped "folklore: the long pond studio sessions."  But you did just get a extra helping of tunes with her "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology," which landed early Friday.

However, some lucky buyers of her new album could also get a special printed note "From the Desk of Taylor Swift," in which the artist says: "Happy Record Store Day!! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for welcoming The Tortured Poets Department into your vinyl collection and your life."

Here's a quick look at some of the most desired Record Store Day releases.

David Bowie: Record Store Day 2024 release predates 'Ziggy'

A special vinyl RSD release, "Waiting in the Sky (Before the Starman Came to Earth)," is an 11-track recreation of an early version of what would eventually become Bowie's 1972 release "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars." Songs included here not on that album are the Chuck Berry cover "Round and Round," Jacque Brel's "Amsterdam," and non-LP favorites "Velvet Goldmine" and "Holy Holy."

Dave Grohl joins Anthrax on special RSD release to help Bad Brains singer

Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian and drummer Charlie Benante were joined by Dave Grohl in the Foo Fighters frontman's studios a cover of the Bad Brain's "The Regulator." Grohl plays drums and sings, while Benante plays bass on the track, proceeds of which will go to help Bad Brains' singer H.R., who has undergone treatment for painful headaches. The flip side of the 7-inch single is etched.

Record Store Day ambassadors Paramore have a special single out

A special 12-inch single has the band's tribute to Talking Heads on one side – a cover of the song "Burning Down the House" – and David Byrne's version of Paramore's “Hard Times” on the other (available starting Saturday, only at participating record stores).

Also available: "Re: This Is Why," remixes of the album that earned the band Grammys in February 2024 for best rock album and best alternative music performance. The remix LP, made with the help of Wet Leg, Bartees Strange, Foals, the Linda Lindas and others, is available as a standalone LP or in a 2-LP set including the original album.

Talking Heads: A full live performance

Speaking of David Byrne , Talking Heads fans can seek out "Live at WCOZ 77," which captures the band's entire radio station performance from Nov. 17, 1977. (Some of the songs appeared on "The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads."

Also available: The Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love 2001 Remixes,' a blue vinyl LP collecting nine remixes of the much-sampled 1981 song from Talking Heads co-founders Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth.

Olivia Rodrigo and Noah Kahan cover RSD 2024 with dual single

Olivia Rodrigo covers the title track from Noah Kahan 's 2022 album "Stick Season," on one side of a special colored vinyl 7-inch single. On the other, Kahan provides a version of Rodrigo's "Lacy" from her 2023 album "Guts."

Sister Rosetta Tharpe: Live in France: The 1966 Concert in Limoges

This gem is a previously unreleased recording of a live solo performance by “The Godmother of Rock n’ Roll," at the Grand Theatre in Limoges, France on November 11, 1966. It comes on two 180-gram vinyl LPs and has an insert with rare photographs, liner notes and tributes from ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, Susan Tedeschi and others.

This fab Beatles mini record player is a Record Store Day 2024 special

Beatlemania continues – mark May 8 on your calendar to stream the movie "Let It Be" on Disney+ . In the meantime, you can come together with this Beatles limited edition mini turntable ($179.99) from Crosley Radio , commemorating the Fab Four's performance in 1964 on The Ed Sullivan Show.

The turntable comes with four 3-inch records of songs the band performed then: "I Want To Hold Your Hand," "Til There Was You," "She Loves You," and "I Saw Her Standing There." (Note: the records are also available individually.)

The Turntable has a built-in speaker, but also connects to external speakers via Bluetooth.

Also available: Ringo Starr 's new four-track EP titled "Crooked Boy," in a special black and white colored vinyl edition, and two George Harrison albums, "Wonderwall Music" and "Electronic Sound," available as picture discs. — w

The Rolling Stones have something old, something new for RSD 2024

The Stones are dropping "Live At Racket, NYC," a 180-gram solid white vinyl release of the seven songs the band played at the October 19, 2023 launch event for "Hackney Diamonds." The tracks include the duet with Lady Gaga on “Sweet Sounds of Heaven."

Also available: a special black and white swirled vinyl version of the band's 1964 U.K. debut album, which comes stamped (6,000 are available) with a lithograph with classic photos of the band.

The Weeknd: 'Live at SoFi Stadium'

The Canadian artist's first live album, recorded during two November 2022 concerts in LA and released digitally last year, becomes available on a physical format (3 LPs).

Wilco: 'The Whole Love' expanded for RSD

An 3-LP version of the band's 2011 album fleshed out with live in-studio performances, bonus tracks, alternate mixes, demos and a version of the song "Cruel To Be Kind" with Nick Lowe.

Dwight Yoakam's 'Beginning' boxed up for RSD 2024

The country artist has a collection called "The Beginning And Then Some," compiling his first three albums – available on vinyl and CD – with an extra disc of '80s rarities.

The singer-songwriter's latest, "Fu##in' Up" is a reimaging of some past Young classics with a Crazy Horse lineup that includes Micah Nelson. The Record Store Day limited edition comes on two clear vinyl LPs with a lithograph of the album cover art.

It will be available in stores and through the Neil Young Archives store (though it appears to be sold out already). Regular versions of the album come out April 26.

Seattle Seahawks Invite Ex-Ohio State QB to Rookie Minicamp

After not getting any opportunities last year coming out of Gannon University, Kory Curtis earned a rookie minicamp shot with the Seattle Seahawks after showing off his arm talent at the Big 12 Pro Day.

  • Author: Corbin K. Smith
  • Publish date: Apr 19, 2024

In this story:

Less than a week before the 2024 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks already have invited a quarterback to participate in their upcoming rookie minicamp.

Per the player's social media accounts, former Ohio State quarterback Kory Curtis has accepted an opportunity to show off his skills at Seattle's annual rookie minicamp at the VMAC. The 6-4, 230-pound signal caller most recently played at Gannon University, a Division II program in Erie, Pennsylvania, after not seeing any game action with at Ohio State .

Starring at Island Coast High School in Cape Coral, Florida, Curtis bypassed other offers and decided to walk on with the Buckeyes, joining a 2017 recruiting class that also featured five-star signal caller Tate Martell. After not seeing any snaps in two seasons with the program, he transferred to Bryant, where he played in 11 games with nine starts, throwing for 1,700 yards and seven touchdowns. He played in two games in the spring COVID season in 2020, throwing one touchdown.

Kory Curtis didn't play any snaps at Ohio State, but he did find success at the Division II level with Gannon and now will partake in the Seahawks rookie minicamp.

JACK HANRAHAN/ERIE TIMES-NEWS via Imagn

Transferring again in 2021, Curtis stepped down to the Division II level with Gannon, tossing 47 touchdown passes with only 11 interceptions in two seasons with the Golden Knights. Part of the 2023 NFL Draft class, he wasn't drafted and didn't receive any offers to participate in rookie minicamps or sign with an NFL team.

Recently, Curtis took part in the Big 12 Pro Day, throwing passes to NFL hopefuls at receiver and tight end. Though he arrived as little more than an extra arm, his passing skills caught the attention of several NFL teams and now, he will get to show what he can do in a three-day camp with the Seahawks with hopes of landing a spot on the 90-man roster.

Heading into next week's draft, Seattle has starter Geno Smith and third-year signal caller Sam Howell on the roster, but could be in the hunt for a third or even fourth quarterback on the roster with OTAs and minicamps coming up in May and June. Depending on whether or not the team selects a quarterback in the draft, with a strong showing at rookie minicamp, Curtis may be able to keep his dream alive as a developmental arm on the roster.

Judge bench-slaps Trump lawyer 5 times on day one of hush-money trial

  • Trump's lawyer was repeatedly bench-slapped on the first day of his trial.
  • His lead lawyer, Todd Blanche, was rebuked several times for his lawyering.
  • New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan called out the lawyer at least five times on Monday.

Insider Today

It took New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan four hours on Monday to dispense with pretrial matters before starting jury selection in Donald Trump's Manhattan hush-money trial.

In that time — and as an international press corps watched and took notes — Trump's lead lawyer, Todd Blanche, was rebuked at least five times for his lawyering.

Merchan didn't call out Blanche as often as a federal judge in Manhattan rebuked Alina Habba, Trump's attorney in the E. Jean Carroll defamation trial, where Judge Lewis Kaplan bench-slapped Habba 14 times during a single day of testimony.

Still, it was a bit brutal. And it's not the first time a judge has taken Blanche to task, either.

Like the prosecutors, Merchan may be getting weary of Trump's nearly 12 trial-delay attempts and what Joshua Steinglass, one of the prosecutors, called the defense team's "thousands and thousands of pages of frivolous motions."

Here, in chronological order, are five of Merchan's burns — ranging from minor to scorching to merely comical — that would be enough to make any lawyer blanch.

1. "I've noticed that the font has been getting increasingly smaller. "

On March 8, Merchan, in an attempt to rein in pretrial motions, said that the parties needed to ask his permission before filing any new motions by submitting what he called a "pre-motion letter."

These pre-motion letters were to be only a single page long.

In a minor, humorous burn on Monday, the judge noted that the defense had kept to the one-page limit, but they did so at the cost of legibility.

"I think that Mr. Blanche is clear now that a pre-motion letter is one page," Merchan said. (Blanche's first pre-motion letter had been filed with a 51-page motion and 214 pages of exhibits attached).

"But I notice that the font has been getting increasingly smaller" and the margins increasingly smaller, the judge noted.

2. "Well, I don't know how you managed to get all those motions filed then ."

Later in the morning, the parties argued over trial exhibits. The defense had still not told prosecutors what exhibits they planned to show jurors at trial.

"Amazingly, we have yet to receive a single designated exhibit" from the defense, Steinglass complained.

When Blanche countered that the defense had just been too busy, Merchan hit him pretty hard.

"Here's where we stand," Merchan told the lawyer. "You have 24 hours, and whatever you do not identify within 24 hours, you will be precluded from introducing, frivolous or not."

But the judge agreed that the defense had indeed been busy.

"The defense team was very busy actively filing numerous motions, some of which were really motions to renew and reargue decisions that this court had already made," Merchan said.

Trump's team had also dragged prosecutors to an appellate court for three days last week to argue more unsuccessful motions to delay the trial.

"So you have made decisions regarding how you are going to use your time, and that's fine," the judge told Blanche. "That's your decision to make. You have 24 hours.

"Whatever is not received by the people in 24 hours will be precluded," he added. "Period."

Blanche continued to protest.

"We're expected to comply while we're in court the rest of the day, and all day tomorrow?" he said of the 24-hour deadline.

"Well, I don't know how you managed to get all those motions out," the judge snapped back.

"Literally, one Sunday you got three pre-motion letters to me with exhibits and attachments," all filed within 30 minutes, the judge added.

Related stories

"The way you choose to use your time is your business. My order was clear. You are directed to do it, and you are directed to do it immediately," Merchan said of the missing exhibits list.

3. "Please direct me to the portion of the original gag order, or the subsequent gag order, where it makes any exception if Mr. Trump feels he is under attack. I don't recall inserting that anywhere in either gag order."

Prosecutors on Monday also accused Trump of violating his gag order by targeting two key witnesses, Michael Cohen and Stormy Daniels , in a trio of attacks on Truth Social that the former president posted earlier in April.

Trump published a fourth Truth Social post, attacking both Daniels and Cohen, that morning at 9:12 a.m., the prosecutor Chris Conroy complained to the judge.

"It's entirely possible that it was done from this courthouse," Conroy added.

Blanche countered that Trump has little choice but to strike back against Daniels and Cohen, who he said had issued a "barrage of attacks" against the former president.

"The two witnesses themselves have been talking about their testimony in this case, President Trump's ongoing reelection, and just generally making disparaging threats constantly," Blanche said.

The judge told Blanche to file a response, in writing, explaining why Trump should not be held in contempt for violating the gag order.

"When you respond," the judge said, "direct me to any portion of the original gag order or the subsequent gag order that says that there is an exception to the gag order if Mr. Trump feels if he is being attacked."

The judge paused and added with a hint of sarcasm: "I don't recall inserting that anywhere in either gag order."

4. "Counsel, it's important to keep breaks at a given time."

Later in the day, outside the presence of prospective jurors, Merchan chided Trump's lawyers for being slow to return to court after their afternoon break.

"Counsel, it's important to keep breaks at the given time to keep things moving," Merchan told Blanche.

"Yes, your honor," Blanche replied.

"We can get the jury so we can keep moving," Merchan said.

5. "You don't think he should be here at all right now?"

Before court wrapped for the day without a single juror being selected, Blanche made another request of the judge.

He asked if Trump could take off next Thursday to attend the US Supreme Court hearing in another one of his criminal cases.

The justices are set to hear arguments over the former president's sweeping claims of immunity that he says protect him from charges related to the attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, brought by the Justice Department's special counsel Jack Smith.

The April 25 Supreme Court date was set in early March, but Trump's lawyers didn't raise the issue until Monday.

Steinglass, one of the prosecutors, said that Trump, like all criminal defendants, should be required to be present in court for the New York trial.

"I think we've accommodated the defense enough already," Steinglass said.

Merchan acknowledged that "arguing in front of the Supreme Court is a big deal," but "convening a jury of 12 jurors and six alternates is also a big deal."

Blanche protested, saying that the litany of criminal cases against Trump made his situation "incredibly unusual," and suggested Trump shouldn't "be here at all right now."

"You don't think he should be here at all right now?" Merchan asked.

Blanche replied that he didn't think the trial should happen during "campaign season."

"I have already ruled on that," Merchan snapped. "Your client is a criminal defendant in New York County Supreme Court. He is required to be here. He is not required to be in the Supreme Court."

Merchan shut down the request. "I will see him here next week," he said.

Trump Group Spends Big on Legal Fees; Biden Leads at Fundraising

Reuters

(Corrects first paragraph to reflect that the legal fees were paid in March, not February)

By Jason Lange

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Donald Trump's political group that pays his legal bills on Saturday reported spending $3.6 million on lawyer fees in March, draining the finances backing Trump's White House bid as the Republican trailed President Joe Biden at raising money.

Trump is facing four criminal trials - including one which began this week - as he mounts an expensive campaign to challenge Biden, a Democrat, in the November 5 presidential election.

Trump's Save America group, which reported the outlays to the Federal Election Commission, is spending money largely raised from small donors, though the funds available could be dwindling.

The group, which is separate from Trump's campaign but was his biggest fundraising group before he announced his candidacy, reported taking in just over $10,000 from donors in March.

It was able to cover spending by taking a $5 million refund of money it had previously given a super PAC backing Trump's campaign known as MAGA Inc.

Save America has now clawed back more than $52 million of $60 million it had previously given MAGA Inc, reducing considerably the amount of money MAGA Inc has available for television ads backing Trump.

While Save America has not disclosed the details of how much it has spent on each of Trump's legal cases, its filings show that since the start of 2023 it has spent more than $59 million on lawyer fees.

Trump was in court this week as a defendant on charges he falsified business records to cover up hush money payments to a porn start.

His three other pending criminal trials relate to his efforts to overturn his loss to Biden in the 2020 presidential election and to charges he mishandled classified documents after leaving the White House in 2021. Trump is also appealing a $454 million civil fraud judgment, a threat to his personal finances.

Trump's political operation is also facing monetary challenges, disclosures to the Federal Election Commission showed.

His campaign reported raising $15 million in March, up from around $11 million February but not enough to make up financial ground with Biden, who has had a persistent edge in fundraising.

Biden's campaign raised more than $43 million in March and ended the month with $85 million in the bank. Trump's campaign said it ended the month with $45 million in cash.

Public opinion polls show the two locked in a tight race.

Campaign contributions pay for ads, staff and rallies but don't determine the winner. Trump was outraised in 2016 by Democrat Hillary Clinton and still beat her in that year's presidential election.

While Trump's money raising among small donors has appeared to flag, Trump in recent weeks has held fundraising events to court big donors, helping the Republican Party raise more than $20 million in March, nearly double what it collected a month earlier, the party reported on Saturday.

MAGA Inc, the super PAC supporting Trump's bid, reported having $33 million in the bank at the end of March, while Future Forward, the main Democratic super PAC backing Biden, reported having over $41 million.
