Living Life Simply

The grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.

We can accommodate any diet–especially the bread, cheese, and chocolate diet. Supplement those staples with fresh-picked strawberries, cherry tomatoes, or spicy onions. Trail Bologna and Swiss or local kale and cukes. The perfect bite here depends on the mouth. We still cook grandma’s recipes, but our kitchens keep innovating because nirvana balances on the end of a fork.

Break away.

There is a wonderful joy in leaving behind the noisy city streets and starting out along the country road that leads across the hills. With each breath of the sharp, reviving air one seems to inhale new life.

Snuggle down. Cuddle up. Sprawl out. We’ve got a bed made up for you no matter what shape your relaxation takes. Coffee’s brewing and the hens just made you an egg. Wake up in Ohio Amish Country, where the right side of the bed is the only side to get up on.

Welcome to Ohio Amish Country

Things to Do & See Homegrown. Homemade. Handmade. Handshake.

Original tastes, creative comforts, and new-found friendships will flavor your visit. Pet a bristly pig or recline with a glass of cab and acoustic tunes. Watch drama unfold in a darkened theater or gather with an Amish Family for dinner. Discover your very own authentic experience in Ohio Amish Country.

See the traditions. Uncover the heritage.

Nurture your resourceful, industrious spirit while creating.

Take home a bottle or growler along with your memories.

Stoke up the fire and forget about everything else for a little while.

From comedy and drama to acoustic crooners and bluegrass pickers.

The kind of meal that sticks to your ribs.

Tornadoes destroy homes in Nebraska as severe storms tear across Midwest

Updated on: April 26, 2024 / 11:41 PM EDT / CBS/AP

A tornado plowed through suburban Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday, damaging hundreds of homes and other structures as it tore for miles along farmland and into subdivisions. Some injuries were reported but there were no immediate reports that anyone was killed.

Multiple tornadoes were reported in Nebraska and Iowa, but the most destructive storm moved from a largely rural area into suburbs northwest of Omaha, a city of 485,000 people. Photos on social media showed the small city of Minden, Iowa, about 30 miles northeast of Omaha also sustained heavy damage.

Hundreds of houses sustained damage in Omaha, mostly in the Elkhorn area in the western part of the city, Omaha police Lt. Neal Bonacci said.

"You definitely see the path of the tornado," Bonacci said.

APTOPIX Severe Weather Midwest

In a news briefing Friday evening, Omaha Fire Chief Kathy Bossman said that crews arrived to the Ramblewood neighborhood of Elkhorn just before 4 p.m. local time to find "significant damage."

"It appears that many houses are flattened and many houses also have significant damage." Bossman said.

Bossman said crews were conducting "detailed searches" of the damaged neighborhoods throughout the night and into Saturday.

"We have power outages, we have power lines down, we have gas leaks, we have unstable structures, we have trees that are down," the fire chief said.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer told reporters that as of Friday evening, he knew of two people who had been hospitalized with minor injuries.

Firefighters work to clear a home damaged by a tornado near Omaha

In one area of Elkhorn, dozens of newly built, large homes were damaged. At least six were destroyed, including one that was leveled, while others had the top half ripped off.

"We watched it touch down like 200 yards over there and then we took shelter," Pat Woods, who lives in Elkhorn, told the Associated Press. "We could hear it coming through. When we came up our fence was gone and we looked to the northwest and the whole neighborhood's gone."

His wife, Kim Woods added, "The whole neighborhood just to the north of us is pretty flattened."

Dhaval Naik, who said he works with the man whose house was demolished, said three people, including a child, were in the basement when the tornado hit. They got out safely.

The tornado warning was issued in the Omaha area on Friday afternoon just as children were due to be released from school. Many schools had students shelter in place until the storm passed. Hours later, buses were still transporting students home.

"Was it one long track tornado or was it several tornadoes?" said Becky Kern, the warning coordination meteorologist in the National Weather Service's Omaha office.

She said the agency planned to send out multiple crews over the next several days to determine the number of tornadoes and their strength, and that it could take up to two weeks to finish the evaluation.

"Some appeared to be violent tornadoes," she continued. "There were tornadoes in different areas. And so it's like forensic meteorology, we call it, like piecing together, all the damage indicators."

Another tornado hit an area on the eastern edge of Omaha, passing directly through parts of Eppley Airfield, the city's airport. Officials closed the airport to aircraft operations to access damage but then reopened the facility, Omaha Airport Authority Chief Strategy Officer Steve McCoy said.

The passenger terminal wasn't hit by the tornado but people rushed to storm shelters until the twister passed, McCoy said.

Multiple tornadoes were reported in Nebraska but the most destructive storm moved from a largely rural area into suburbs northwest of Omaha, a city of 485,000 people.

Severe Weather Midwest

In Nebraska's Lancaster County, where three people were injured when an industrial building collapsed, sheriff's officials also said they had reports of a tipped-over train near Waverly.

Two people who were injured in the county were being treated at the trauma center at Bryan Medical Center West Campus in Lincoln, the facility said in a news release. The hospital said the patients were in triage and no details were released on their condition.

Daniel Fienhold, manager of the Pink Poodle Steakhouse in Crescent, Iowa, said he was outside watching the weather with his daughter and restaurant employees. He said "it looked like a pretty big tornado was forming" northeast of town.

"It started raining, and then it started hailing, and then all the clouds started to kind of swirl and come together, and as soon as the wind started to pick up, that's when I headed for the basement, but we never saw it," Fienhold said.

The forecast for Saturday was ominous. The Weather Service also issued tornado watches across parts of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. And forecasters warned that large hail and strong wind gusts were possible.

"It does look like a big outbreak again tomorrow," Kern said. "Maybe slightly farther south."

Severe storms and tornadoes hit Kansas and Iowa last week causing damage and hurting two people. Ping pong ball-sized hail was reported just north of the Missouri line.

VP Kamala Harris talks abortion in La Crosse, announces minimum nursing home staff levels

visit homes.com

LA CROSSE — In a visit to a purple region of Wisconsin on Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris announced new rules for nursing home staffing and rallied voters around abortion as the race for the presidency remains extremely tight in the battleground state.

"This is a moment where we must stand up for foundational, fundamental values and principles," Harris told supporters during a campaign event at the La Crosse Center. "Here's the other piece that I will say: When we think about what is at stake, it is absolutely about freedom."

The trip to La Crosse reflects Democrats' efforts to make abortion a key factor in motivating turnout for President Joe Biden, including among voters in purple areas or even the traditionally red Milwaukee suburbs.

Women affected by abortion bans in other states campaigned for Biden in Waukesha County last week , and Harris brought a similar message to the area in January . Biden administration officials have also made frequent trips to Milwaukee and Madison this year, both Democratic strongholds.

Democrats have focused blame on former President Donald Trump, who has so far visited Wisconsin once this election cycle. Trump held a two percentage point lead over Biden in the most recent statewide poll by the Marquette University Law School, 51% to 49%, well within the poll's margin of error.

Trump in a video statement earlier this month said abortion restrictions should be left up to the states . Abortions are currently being provided in Wisconsin, but the state Supreme Court could soon weigh in .

"There is a clear line between where we are now and who is to blame," Harris said. "The former president was very clear with his intention — he would fill and appoint three members of the U.S. Supreme Court with the intention that they would overturn the protections of (Roe v. Wade)."

Harris announces new rules for staffing levels at nursing homes

Before speaking at the campaign event, Harris met with home health care workers at the Hmoob Cultural & Community Agency, where she announced two new federal rules.

One sets minimum staffing levels in nursing homes that receive federal funding through Medicare and Medicaid — about 3 1/2 hours of staffing per resident per day, a requirement that will be phased in. A registered nurse will also be required on site at all times.

Another rule provides that more Medicaid payments for home care services go toward workers' wages.

"The two announcements that we are making today recognize that we owe you, those workers, so much more than applauding you," Harris said, referencing praise for health care workers during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. "Let's recognize the gift that these talented professionals give to families and to all of us as a society."

Ron Johnson says nursing home rules should be handled locally

In Madison, Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson spoke to reporters about Harris' visit following a roundtable discussion hosted by the state's largest business lobby, Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce.

"Anybody who's following me realizes I'm not a real fan of the federal government," Johnson said when asked about the new federal rules for nursing homes.

"So I would much rather allow or have the state government and local governments in charge of the requirements of nursing care facilities, and — anything to do with the citizens of this state, I'd rather have state governments and local governments handle that than some dictate from the federal government that causes more problems or exacerbates more problems than it solves."

New Marquette poll shows abortion is top issue for Democratic voters

In the latest Marquette University Law School poll released last week , 24% of Democratic voters said they consider abortion their most important issue in deciding who to vote for, followed by the economy. For independent and Republican voters, 5% of those groups saw abortion as their top issue.

"People will say to me, 'Well, Sarah, aren't folks just over that whole abortion issue? Haven't they just moved on?" Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski said before Harris' speech. "I am just as mad today as when I heard about the Supreme Court overturning Roe, and I know that I'm not alone."

While abortion was the leading issue among Democratic participants, the economy was the No. 1 issue for all respondents in the survey, followed by immigration and abortion policy. Voters saw Biden better at handling abortion and health care, and Trump better on the economy and immigration.

A majority of registered voters in Wisconsin, 54%, also said they favor a national ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy with exceptions for rape, incest and the life and health of the mother.

Johnson, in comments to reporters at the Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce, again called for a statewide referendum that would put the question of when to ban abortion to voters.

Democrats campaigning on abortion outside of blue strongholds

While Democrats have also highlighted abortion access in suburban Milwaukee, the La Crosse area is much more purple and voted for Biden in 2020. In 2020 , La Crosse County voted 56% for Biden, compared to Trump's 42%.

While Biden officials have stopped in Milwaukee and Madison most frequently, they've also visited Superior on the Minnesota border , Green Bay and the Menominee Nation in northeastern Wisconsin.

More: Did the 2020 presidential election in Wisconsin really come down to a few votes per ward?

La Crosse is located in the 3rd Congressional District, one of two truly competitive U.S. House districts in Wisconsin. The seat is currently held by Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden. Democrats are focusing more energy on the race compared to the last cycle.

Van Orden has raised much more money than his prospective Democratic challengers, small-business owner Rebecca Cooke and state Rep. Katrina Shankland from Stevens Point.

Neither were spotted at the campaign event, though Democratic U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan from Madison praised Shankland alongside other state legislators from the area in his remarks at the campaign event. Pocan has endorsed Shankland in the race.

Pocan called Van Orden a "chauvinist" and said western Wisconsin is "represented in Congress by someone who has been endorsed by the most extreme groups on abortion."

Jessie Opoien contributed to this report from Madison.

Breaking news, lawmakers want to ban wall street from buying up more single-family homes across the us.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Wall Street firms in recent years have spent billions aggressively scooping up single-family homes with cash — but a growing number of US lawmakers and state officials want to put an end to the controversial practice.

Democrats in the US Senate and House of Representatives have sponsored legislation dubbed the End Hedge Fund Control of American Homes Act, which would force large owners of single-family residences to sell their swath of homes to family buyers, The Wall Street Journal reported .

Should the rule pass, corporations would have to sell off all of the single-family homes they own over a 10-year period, at which point they would be barred from owning that type of property entirely.

Separately, a Republican-backed bill in the Ohio state legislature aims to drive out institutional owners through heavy taxation.

Lawmakers across Nebraska, California, New York, Minnesota and North Carolina are among those proposing similar laws, according to The Journal, arguing that investors at the helm of hundreds of thousands of rented-out homes has driven up prices for families across the country.

Despite the increasingly unaffordable housing market — where mortgage rates are high and inventory is low — first-time homebuyers are now also presented with the challenge of competing with Wall Street-backed investment firms and their all-cash offers, The Journal reported.

Investors ramped up their spend on single-family homes during peak pandemic days in 2022, when more than one in every four properties of this kind went to wealthy corporations.

In late 2022, The Real Deal reported that institutional investors set a staggering $110 billion aside to purchase or build single-family rentals.

Of the sum, $30 billion was earmarked for a new development — and it marked enough to contruct some 400,000 new homes, according to The Real Deal, which found that investment titans Blackstone and KKR were among the players in the $4.4 trillion single-family rental market.

Publicly traded home-buying firms Invitation Homes and Tricon Residential, as well as wealth managers and pension funds such as CalPERS and Invesco, were also gearing up for a real estate shopping spree at the time, per The Real Deal.

In response to lawmakers who have been critical of companies’ homeownership, the firms have argued that renting out single-family homes gives renters the ability to live in desirable neighborhoods where they wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford a home, The Journal reported.

And though most calls to block large companies from buying up homes comes from Democratic officials, some Republicans have joined the crackdown — including Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott in a suit and tie, holding a microphone, speaking at the 2024 New York GOP Gala at the New York Hilton Hotel.

Abbott wrote on X last month that this “corporate large-scale buying of residential homes seems to be distorting the market and making it harder for the average Texan to purchase a home.”

“This must be added to the legislative agenda to protect Texas families.”

Though surveys reviewed by The Journal have shown that close to an equal number of voting-age Democrats and Republicans would be in favor of passing legislation blocking Wall Street firms from buying homes, none of the bills in Congress — or in any of the state houses — has reached a floor vote.

A 'For Lease' sign posted outside a single-family house available for rent in Los Angeles, California on March 15, 2022

The bills currently in the House and Senate would cap rental-home ownership at no more than 50 homes for many companies, according to The Journal.

The laws would also require the firms to sell off any more they already own.

A bill in Minnesota, meanwhile, would limit ownership to 20 homes.

Louis Blessing III — a Republican representing suburbs of Cincinnati in the Ohio Senate who’s in favor of taxing large landlords so heavily they’re inclined to sell their properties — called the intiative “an antitrust in spirit bill,” per The Journal.

At least 5 people, including infant, dead after night of tornadoes, storms in the Midwest

Dawn broke over scenes of devastation in several counties across Oklahoma on Sunday, with reports of severe structural damage, closed highways, blackouts, injuries and at least five deaths. There have been 35 reports of tornadoes overnight so far.

Twenty-seven million people remained at risk of severe weather into Sunday, including wind gusts, hail, flood risk and potentially more tornadoes.

Saturday's severe weather came less than 36 hours after more than 100 tornadoes leveled homes and buildings in six states Friday, with Nebraska and Iowa being hit hardest, officials said.

The National Weather Service office in Norman, Oklahoma, confirmed late Saturday that multiple tornadoes were in its area, including one near Davenport and more than one in the area of Sulphur, a small town of about 5,000 people 80 miles south of Oklahoma City, which appeared to have taken the biggest hit.

On Sunday, the weather service's Norman office said that, based on preliminary damage survey results, tornadoes with ratings of at least EF3 tore through Sulphur and Marietta in Oklahoma. The service said more investigation would be necessary to determine whether the rating will go higher.

The Murray County Emergency Management reported “significant damage” in Sulphur. In Love County, patients had to shelter during storms that damaged Marietta Hospital, though no injuries were reported, the county emergency management office said.

Also in Marietta, four semitrucks overturned, killing one person, after a tornado ripped through Interstate 35 on Saturday night, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

Oklahoma’s Office of Emergency Management confirmed three deaths, one near Marietta on I-35 and two others in Holdenville. Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt arrived Sunday afternoon in Sulphur, where he said a fourth person died in the downtown area.

One of the Holdenville victims was 4 months old, Stitt's press secretary said, citing Holdenville officials.

More than 170 storms were reported Saturday after days of severe weather. Storms were still expected through southern Missouri to southeast Texas on Sunday.

Flash flooding is also a concern for 18 million people from Kansas City to Lake Charles, Louisiana. Some flood warnings will continue into Monday.Video emerging on social media early Sunday showed heavy damage across Sulphur, including toppled trees and scattered bricks and wooden beams. Buildings in the downtown area sustained significant structural damage, including blown-out windows and missing walls. Others appeared to have been leveled and reduced to rubble.

The Oklahoma Health Department reported 100 injuries at area hospitals, according to the state Emergency Management Department. Of the injured, 25 were cut or had been pierced, 30 fell, 16 were hit by or struck against objects, 17 sustained transportation-related injuries, and 12 others were hurt by other means, the emergency services department said. The extent of each of the injuries was unclear.

Red Cross Oklahoma said early Sunday that it was opening a shelter in Sulphur and was in contact with officials in more than a dozen counties to help with the immediate needs of affected residents.

Stitt signed an executive order Sunday declaring a disaster emergency.

In neighboring Hughes County, officials reported four people injured, as well as several structures either damaged or destroyed, after a tornado ripped through its western part late Saturday.

On Sunday, Hughes County Emergency Management reported 14 homes were damaged or destroyed in Holdenville. In addition, officials said four properties were damaged in Okfuskee County, and Pottawatomie County Emergency Management reported seven damaged structures in Dale and unincorporated areas of Shawnee.

There were also "numerous injuries" and damaged structures in Wagoner County, officials said.

Homes and other structures were also damaged in communities in Garfield, Grant, Kay, Payne and several other counties in Oklahoma, officials said.

The National Weather Service in Norman said that as of 1:25 a.m. local time Sunday, some tornado warnings had passed but that flash flooding remained a threat.

Bruce Thoren, meteorologist for the agency's Norman branch, said teams will go out to the Marietta and Sulphur areas while others may be sent elsewhere through the week.

Sean Thomas Sledd salvages items from his room after it was hit by a tornado

"We are aware of other places that received damage, but based on travel time and other factors they will be looked at in days to come, probably not today," Thoren said. "The area that we cover is pretty large compared to other forecast offices, so to travel down and back could be up to four hours. So we’ll for sure get there, and we know there’s damage — just trying to figure out where we go today."Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. said early Sunday about 28,000 customers were without service as a result of the storms, primarily in southern Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Transportation Department warned early Sunday that I-35 was closed in both directions in Love County because of storm damage cleanup.

More than 30 million people in Oklahoma City; Dallas; Wichita, Kansas; Omaha, Nebraska; Milwaukee; and Madison, Wisconsin, were in the path of severe weather Saturday.

This round of severe weather arrived even as parts of Nebraska and Iowa were still reeling from the damage caused by two tornadoes that struck the region.

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert said Saturday that no deaths had been reported and that there were relatively few minor injuries.

Despite heavy damage to some residents' homes, including those belonging to three Omaha firefighters and two police commanders, officials Saturday were grateful it wasn't worse.Speaking at an afternoon news conference, Stothert said she planned to sign an emergency declaration, which would allow residents to tap state and federal recovery aid.

She credited the National Weather Service and local news media for warning the public about the tornadoes.

"I do want to thank our local forecasters for the clear and accurate warnings that they gave," she said. "I absolutely feel that this early warning, because of all of you, you prevented a lot of injury and probably death."

Lindsay Huse, health director for Douglas County, where Omaha is located, said by email that fewer than two dozen people suffered minor injuries. They were treated at medical facilities and have been released, she said.

"That's just miraculous," Huse said earlier at the news conference.

People walk through the rubble of a house that was leveled.

The National Weather Service assessed two tornadoes that struck the Omaha area Friday afternoon. One started in the area of Lincoln and ended up in western Douglas County, NWS meteorologist Chris Franks said at the news conference. It was preliminarily assessed at a "solid" EF3 on the 0-5 scale used by federal forecasters, he said. An EF3 tornado can produce sustained winds of 136-165 mph and shift homes off their foundations while peeling away exterior walls.

At Omaha Eppley Airfield, a tornado preliminarily assessed at EF2 struck Friday afternoon, Franks said. An EF2 tornado can produce sustained winds of 111-135 mph that can partly peel away rooftops and breach window glass.

Tornado activity was also reported in neighboring Iowa. Franks estimated that 80 tornadoes were reported in Douglas County and adjacent communities in Nebraska and Iowa on Friday.

In Lancaster County, Nebraska, a tornado was blamed for a train derailment and a semitruck rollover, according to National Weather Service notes on Friday's vortexes.

Omaha Police Lt. Neal Bonacci said hundreds of homes were damaged, most of them in the Elkhorn area in the western part of the city.

“You definitely see the path of the tornado,” Bonacci said.

Police and firefighters went door to door to help residents and search areas where people could be trapped, Omaha Fire Chief Kathy Bossman said.

"We’ll be looking throughout properties in debris piles, we’ll be looking in basements, trying to find any victims and make sure everybody is rescued who needs assistance," Bossman said.

Pat Woods, who lives in Elkhorn, told The Associated Press that he and his wife took shelter but could hear the tornado "coming through."

"When we came up, our fence was gone, and we looked to the northwest and the whole neighborhood’s gone," he said.

His wife, Kim Woods, said the neighborhood to the north of them was "pretty flattened."

A house destroyed by a tornado in Nebraska

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds declared a disaster emergency for Pottawattamie County after video on social media showed parts of Minden, about 30 miles northeast of Omaha, completely flattened.Jeff Theulen, the chief deputy of the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, said at a news conference Friday evening that 40 or 50 homes were "completely destroyed." There have been two reports of injuries, one "fairly severe but not life-threatening," he told reporters.

By Sunday, officials estimated that the storms had damaged 300 homes and businesses in the county, Pottawattamie County said in a release. In the city of Minden, 48 homes were "completely destroyed."

Pottawattamie County added in the release that four people sustained storm-related injuries. Three were treated and released Friday evening. The fourth, who was previously listed as stable in critical condition, died overnight Saturday.

"It's very dangerous right now. We've shut off entrance to the city except for the people that live here," he said, noting that "50% of the town is damaged badly and then there’s light damage everywhere else."

In nearby Shelby County, about 40 homes were damaged, county emergency coordinator Alex Londo said. Officials were assessing the destruction, he said, noting there have been no reports of deaths.

National Weather Service offices surveyed damage ahead of more severe weather expected Saturday.

Tornado damage in Minden, Iowa.

The service reported 106 tornadoes Friday in Nebraska, Iowa, Texas, Kansas and Missouri. Another tornado was reported Friday morning in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma.Oklahoma was also affected by the unstable air and thunderstorms that marched eastward Friday, but the weather service listed no confirmed tornadoes in the state.

Among Friday's tornadoes getting a preliminary assessment by the weather service were two near Waco, Texas — one believed to be at EF2 strength — and the other assessed at EF1 (86-110 mph).

Owning a home can help you build equity, offers tax deductions and fixed monthly payments, and gives you a sense of permanence. When you rent, your lease sets the price, your place isn’t really yours, and there are no tax benefits or financial freedom. There are many benefits to owning a home that you can’t get with renting.

SULPHUR, Okla. (AP) — Tornadoes killed four people in Oklahoma, including an infant, and left thousands without power Sunday after a destructive outbreak of severe weather flattened buildings in the heart of one rural town and injured at least 100 people across the state.

More than 20,000 people were still without electricity hours after tornadoes began late Saturday night. The destruction was extensive in Sulphur, a town of about 5,000 people, where a tornado crumpled many downtown buildings, tossed cars and buses and sheared the roofs off houses across a 15-block radius.

“You just can’t believe the destruction,” Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt said during a visit to the hard-hit town. “It seems like every business downtown has been destroyed.”

Stitt said about 30 people were injured in Sulphur, including some who were in a bar as the tornado struck. Hospitals across the state reported about 100 injuries, including people apparently cut or struck by debris, according to the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management. An infant was among those killed, Hughes County Emergency Management Director Mike Dockrey told Oklahoma television station KOCO .

White House officials said President Joe Biden spoke to Stitt on Sunday and offered the full support of the federal government.

The deadly weather in Oklahoma added to the dozens of reported tornadoes that have wreaked havoc in the nation’s midsection since Friday . Another death was reported Sunday in Iowa, where officials in Pottawattamie County said a man critically injured during a tornado Friday had died.

In Oklahoma, authorities said the tornado in Sulphur began in a city park before barreling through the downtown, flipping cars and ripping the roofs and walls off of brick buildings. Windows and doors were blown out of structures that remained standing.

“How do you rebuild it? This is complete devastation,” said Kelly Trussell, a lifelong Sulphur resident as she surveyed the damage. “It is crazy, you want to help but where do you start?”

Carolyn Goodman traveled to Sulphur from the nearby town of Ada in search of her former sister-in-law, who Goodman said was at a local bar just before the tornado hit the area. Stitt said one of the victims was found inside a bar but authorities had not yet identified those killed.

“The bar was destroyed,” Goodman said. “I know they probably won’t find her alive ... but I hope she is still alive.”

Farther north, a tornado near the town of Holdenville killed two people and damaged or destroyed more than a dozen homes, according to the Hughes County Emergency Medical Service. Another person was killed along Interstate 35 near the southern Oklahoma city of Marietta, state officials said.

Heavy rains that swept into Oklahoma with the tornadoes also caused dangerous flooding and water rescues. Outside Sulphur, rising lake levels shut down the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, where the storms wiped out a pedestrian bridge.

Stitt issued an executive order Sunday declaring a state of emergency in 12 counties due to the fallout from the severe weather.

At the Sulphur High School gym, where families took cover from the storm, Jackalyn Wright said she and her family heard what sounded like a helicopter as the tornado touched down over them.

Chad Smith, 43, said people ran into the gym as the wind picked up. The rain started coming faster and the doors slammed shut. “Just give me a beer and a lawn chair and I will sit outside and watch it,” Smith said. Instead, he took cover.

Residents in other states were also digging out from storm damage . A tornado in suburban Omaha, Nebraska, demolished homes and businesses Saturday as it moved for miles through farmland and into subdivisions, then slammed an Iowa town.

The tornado damage began Friday afternoon near Lincoln, Nebraska. An industrial building in Lancaster County was hit, causing it to collapse with 70 people inside. Several were trapped, but everyone was evacuated, and the three injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said.

One or possibly two tornadoes then spent around an hour creeping toward Omaha, leaving behind damage consistent with an EF3 twister, with winds of 135 to 165 mph (217 to 265 kph), said Chris Franks, a meteorologist in the National Weather Service’s Omaha office.

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen and Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds spent Saturday touring the damage and arranging for assistance for the damaged communities. Formal damage assessments are still underway, but the states plan to seek federal help.

Associated Press journalists Acacia Coronado in Austin, Texas, and Sophia Tareen in Chicago contributed to this report.

Tornadoes Sweep Through Nebraska and Iowa, Leveling Buildings

Storms destroyed homes and injured several people in Iowa and Nebraska, including in Omaha. A tornado also hit near Des Moines.

Tornadoes tore through parts of Nebraska and Iowa on Friday, leveling dozens of homes, causing the collapse of an industrial building and injuring at least nine people, extending an outbreak of severe weather that started the day before.

In Nebraska, tornadoes struck several places, including Waverly and Lincoln, where an industrial building was destroyed, injuring at least three people, officials said. In western Omaha, two people were hospitalized and hundreds of homes were damaged, the police said.

In Iowa, a tornado hit Minden, about 100 miles west of Des Moines, destroying dozens of homes, said officials in Pottawattamie County, where at least four people were injured. Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation for the county. Meteorologists also confirmed a tornado east of Des Moines, near Pleasant Hill .

The National Weather Service said that it had received more than 95 reports of tornadoes in at least five states in the Great Plains on Friday.

In Minden, the tornado left half the town “damaged badly,” with about 40 to 50 homes destroyed, said Jeff Theulen, the chief deputy with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office. Across the county, about 120 homes and businesses were damaged, the county Emergency Management Agency said early Saturday.

“There were several gas leaks, wires down, a lot of debris,” Deputy Theulen said. “So it’s a very dangerous area right now.”

In Lancaster County, Neb., the sheriff’s office responded to an industrial building at Garner Industries and found it “pretty much totally collapsed” with several people trapped inside, Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said. Three people were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, he said, adding that roughly 70 people were inside when the tornado struck.

The sheriff’s office also received reports of a derailed train in Waverly, he said, adding, “They didn’t require any emergency assistance, so we’re hoping it’s very minor.”

In western Omaha , a tornado “took out a number of houses,” Todd Schmaderer, the Omaha police chief, said at a news conference on Friday. Two people there were hospitalized with minor injuries, said Lt. Neal Bonacci of the city’s police.

Tornadoes in the Midwest

Locations of tornado sightings or damage reported by trained spotters.

Eppley Airfield in Omaha temporarily closed because of the storm, the airport said on social media . It later confirmed that a tornado had touched down there .

Passengers were taken to storm shelters, the airport said, noting that although the terminal was unaffected, “a number of buildings in the General Aviation area on the east side of airport property sustained damage.”

There were no reports of any injuries, the airport said, though footage on social media showed the airport and planes were damaged.

Melanie Colton, 44, said she was preparing to pick up her children from school when she saw the funnel cloud appear and begin to make its way toward her in-laws’ farm home, just outside Waverly.

“The house is really unlivable,” she said. “A lot of the windows are broken out, and there’s a tree through the roof. The two sheds in the backyard are destroyed, with debris from the sheds spread out about two miles.”

Ms. Colton’s in-laws, who have lived in the home for 46 years, said that no one was injured, except for the family horse, Shasta, who had to get stitches.

Numerous homes in Elkhorn, Bennington and Waterloo in western Douglas County in Nebraska were also severely damaged, county officials said. Residents were displaced but no fatalities or serious injuries were reported, officials said. The tornado damage also exposed power lines and severed gas lines, they said, warning people to avoid the affected areas.

Roofs are damaged or missing entirely from several houses seen from above.

More severe weather is expected on Saturday

Forecast risk of severe weather for saturday.

A widespread risk of dangerous weather remains possible on Saturday, extending from Texas to the northeast Great Lakes. Severe thunderstorms are expected over swaths of Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Missouri, according to the National Weather Service .

More strong tornadoes are expected to form on Saturday in those areas, along with winds of more than 70 miles per hour.

Hail ranging in size from golf balls to baseballs could pelt widespread areas. And heavy rainfall could also prompt flash flooding, the Weather Service warned, some of which could be “significant in nature.”

The risk continues Sunday

The threat of severe thunderstorms will continue into Sunday, including areas from southeast Texas to western Illinois.

Storms will be slightly less likely to occur, but there will still be some risk of storms forming that could even produce a couple of tornadoes, while possibly generating quarter-size hail and damaging winds.
