My own travel journey is what brought me to where I am today. Most of my travel has been immersive, living and socializing with locals. It all began at the age of 5 when my family traveled to Cuernavaca for language immersion school. In my teens I spent a summer in the mountainous region of Panama and attended high school in Salta, Argentina for a year through the American Field Service (AFS). My college year abroad led me to Madrid through St. Lawrence University’s international program which gave me the opportunity to master my Spanish and travel all over Spain and Portugal.

Using my formative years and college degree to build a foundation of knowledge and experience as it relates to culture, language, and travel, I moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico to work for the Episcopal Diocese of Puerto Rico. My short-term travels have taken me all over Europe, Mexico, and the Caribbean, to Cuba leading mission groups, to peace conferences in Germany and England. I've had the pleasure of exploring more than half of our countries beautiful States and National Parks. At this point I have visited 32 States, 21 Countries, and counting; so as you can see, I’ve been hooked on travel for as long as I can remember. Travel and the people I have met along the way have changed my life in so many incredible ways as I hope it does for you too!

Petrabax is Back with a Summer Tour, Viva Madrid!

Petrabax, supplier of inexpensive tours to the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco, is back, this time with a $799 summer bargain to Madrid. The package includes airfare from New York and six nights at a first-class hotel in the capital of Spain throughout July and August, with departures every Thursday. The only drawback is that you reach Madrid via a non-stop flight from the Big Apple to Malaga, then double back a bit to the Spanish capital.

Flights are on AirPlus, a subsidiary of SpanAir, whose majority shareholder is SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System). You can enjoy Madrid's many museums, including the world-famous Prado (with dozens of paintings by the great masters, including Velazquez, Goya and El Greco) and the new Thyssen collection in the Palacio de Villahermosa (chock a block with impressionists and even later works). From the capital, it's an easy day trip to many historic Castilian cities, such as Avila, Segovia and Escorial, in any one of which you may bump into droves of summer school students. All can be reached by train, bus or rental car in a half day, while Toledo (home to El Greco) offers its marvelous cathedral and combination Jewish and Moorish history to anyone on a full day's outing.

In Madrid itself, you can explore antique stores in the old Rastro quarter or look for boutiques on Calle Serrano. You don't have to drool over local and regional specialties, just pop into the restaurants (many with open-air seating) to experience them, as well as the fine wines or tapas available in bars surrounding the Plaza Mayor.

The $799 air and hotel package does not include hotel taxes or breakfasts. Airport departure taxes and fees of approximately $75 are extra.

Za eventualna odstupanja i kvalitet usluge u okviru smeštajnih objekata, organizator putovanja ne snosi odgovornost, jer to isključivo zavisi od smeštajnih objekata - Objašnjenje: kontinentalni švedski sto – manji izbor namirnica i uglavnom je slatki doručak. Organizator putovanja dva dana pred put šalje obaveštenje o polasku sms porukom. - Ukoliko putnik ne dobije sms poruku, dužan je da kontaktira agenciju radi dobijanja tačnih informacija o polasku. - Dužina trajanja slobodnog vremena za individualne aktivnosti tokom programa putovanja zavisi od objektivnih okolnosti (npr. dužine trajanja obilazaka, termina polazaka…) - Svaki komad prtljaga mora biti obeležen Viva obeleživačima sa upisanim podacima putnika (ime i prezime, broj telefona) - Za sve informacije date usmenim, telefonskim ili elektronskim putem agencija ne snosi odgovornost. Validan je samo pisani program putovanja istaknut u prostorijama agencije - Organizator putovanja zadržava pravo promene programa putovanja usled nepredviđenih objektivnih okolnosti (npr. gužva na granicama, gužva u saobraćaju, zatvaranje nekog od lokaliteta predviđenog za obilazak...) - Potpisnik ugovora o putovanju ili predstavnici grupe putnika obavezni su da sve putnike upoznaju sa ugovorenim programom putovanja, uslovima plaćanja i osiguranja, kao i Opštim uslovima putovanja organizatora putovanja - Rok za prijavu uglavnom zavisi od popunjenosti. What to expect if you travel to Madrid

Surprisingly to many, Spain’s crime rate is the lowest in Europe, much lower than in the UK or Germany, supposedly highly civilized countries.

A safe city   to visit

The most usual crime in Spain is theft, oddly enough committed mostly by foreigners.

Petty thefts are the norm: handbag snatching, pick pocketing, laptop lifting and cell phone stealing. Violent crimes are few and very far between.

Whereas rape and murder is the daily norm in many American and South American cities, Spain can boast of being a truly safe country. Muggings are unknown.

I´ve lived here for many years and I´m speaking of the Madrid I live in today. 

Safety is part of well-being. One should be free to walk the streets of one’s hometown without the fear of being mugged, robbed, raped or harassed in any way.

The US boasts that it is the land of the free, the land of the free where people in most large cities feel unsafe and cowered by crime.

Madrid is a small city, population-wise. It has only 3,000,000 inhabitants within city limits which is a drop in the bucket if we compare it to London or Berlin. Tokyo boasts over 32,000,000 and New York 8,000,000.

Madrid is, like many other European cities, a beautiful town, a beautiful village. Its official status is that of villa de Madrid , village of Madrid. If you are a brisk walker you can certainly hoof it.

It has fantastic buildings, wide avenues, narrow streets, museums, plenty of parks, and history and culture galore. After all, it was the center of a vast Empire for centuries.

In Madrid you can be and feel safe

The best ingredient or attractiveness of the city is safety. In Madrid you can be and feel safe. Taking the necessary and common-sense precautions, Madrid can be enjoyed without worry.

You can step out of your abode fearless of being mugged, harassed, beaten, assaulted or even killed. That is a huge asset Madrid can brag about.

The safety Madrid enjoys is not only the efficient work of the local police force, Policía Municipal , or the Policía Nacional , but also the fact that Spaniards as a whole are law-abiding citizens, except when it comes to jaywalking, speeding and noise-making.

I would say that Madrid is a city where women can feel at ease, safe and free.

A woman can walk in the streets, take public transportation, go shopping, eat out, and more, without a male escort, at any time of day.

The streets at 10 pm are as safe as at 12 noon. The famous piropo , catcall, has just about died out, even among the older set.

Think of it: being able to get on a bus which is clean, surrounded by pretty much sane people, getting off near the Puerta del Sol, walk about by yourself, do some shopping, carry your bags, sit at a terrace café, take another bus back, or even the subway… in safety, without dread, without a feeling of fear.

To me that is the most valuable asset Madrid, Spain in general, has to offer newcomers and natives alike.

When my daughter Laura, from San Francisco, comes to visit she is like a whirlwind of action and activity, moving about from place to place, at odd hours, meeting friends, dining out… she tells me she cannot do that or be so carefree back home.

And there is no need to own a car in Madrid because public transportation is clean, efficient, fast and… cheap.

If you like to live in fear, to be indoors most of the time, to savor the possibility of a mugging around the corner, to depend on a car… do not come to Madrid. Stay where you are.

A final caveat: common sense must be the rule even in Madrid, and do not trouble trouble, even if it troubles you, and let sleeping dogs lie and keep your eyes peeled wherever you are.

Now, terrorist attacks, like the ones in New York, Madrid and Paris may occur in any city in the world, any time. That is a threat we may unfortunately have to learn to live with, no matter where we live or travel to.

We ate lunch here and sat outside watching the world go by. The food was delicious and the tinto verano was the nicest we had in Madrid. Be sure to go inside and see the beautiful decor.

Cocktails make the difference: we tried some during our stay in Madrid, and all of them were excellent. also food was good (try the croquetas!). Quality and kindness, deserve a 5/5.

A cosy restaurant with a great atmosphere and a great service. We had a few tapas plates and all was unique and very good, though pricy.

Absolutely recommended. What a lovely ambience. The staff was very professional and helpful. And what to say about cocktails! Fabulous!!! A must when visiting Madrid

Beautiful place. Staff were welcoming and efficient. Food was traditional with a modern twist inspired by the Caribbean, well executed. Probably more of an adult pallet but the children enjoyed trying it and the atmosphere. Music was good too. Will be back

Here you’ll find an eclectic menu with inspiration from around the globe with a special focus on some Spanish favorites like a Spanish tortilla, house-made croquettes, chapatas (Spanish sandwiches), and more.

Calle de Cádiz, 7, 28012 Madrid, Spain I think this vegan restaurant has everything you could want — incredible burgers, decadent cakes, and breakfast! Make sure you don’t miss one of their crispy waffles loaded with fruit or rich caramel.

Pl. de Carlos Cambronero, 1, 28004 Madrid, Spain This vegan café has delicious ice cream sundaes, milkshakes, chocolate, churros, and more! You’re probably going to want one of everything!

Calle de Cádiz, 7, 28012 Madrid, Spain In addition to having a terrific lineup of greasy vegan diner eats, this spot also has jaw-dropping cakes and sweets! Save room for their Peanut and Choco cake or a vegan NY-style cheesecake.

Radisson Blu Madrid

C. de Moratín, 52, 28014 Madrid, Spain A stay at this Radisson is vegan-friendly and eco-friendly! The hotel’s restaurant, Lona serves up fresh dishes that use ingredients that are locally and sustainably sourced (vegan and vegetarian options available). Aside from food, the hotel has enacted many sustainable practices like energy and water-saving measures, the use of toiletries that are in biodegradable and recyclable packaging, and it even has its own wind turbine to generate energy.

Artiem Madrid

Juan Perez Zuñiga, 20, Ciudad Lineal, 28027 Madrid, Spain Not only does this hotel have vegan and gluten-free options they also pride themselves on their eco-friendly measures. In 2018, the hotel began its 8/80 project which aims to reduce the hotel’s carbon emissions in 8 years. Some of the steps the hotel is taking are the installation of solar panels, energy-efficient heating, and cooling, using plastic as little as possible, and recycling as much as possible, even providing recycle bins in hotel rooms. One note, this spot is a little outside the city center.

Five Things To Do in Madrid

#1 see a flamenco show.

The rhythm and beat of this traditional Spanish dance is infectious. Trust me, after experiencing a show, you might even want to try — or maybe that’s the wine talking. You can’t go to Spain and not see a Flamenco show. The hardest part is deciding which Tablao to visit — there are many throughout the city. We visited one of the oldest and most famous in the city, Corral de la Moreria — highly recommend!

#2 Visit Plaza Mayor

This is the heart of Madrid and it’s full of cafes, shops, and street performers. It is a lovely place to stop and enjoy a drink and the ambiance. A few blocks away is another well-known square that is lovely to wander through — La Puerta del Sol.

#3 Stroll through El Retiro Park (Parque del Buen Retiro)

One of the largest parks in Madrid that once belonged to the Spanish Monarchy. It is a lovely place to take a stroll through the formal gardens, rent a rowboat for an afternoon ride, or enjoy a picnic. Make sure to check out the Palacio de Cristal that often hosts special art exhibitions.

#4 Visit the Famous Prado Museum (Museo Nacional del Prado)

The Spanish National Art Museum is considered the “Crown Jewel” of museums and tourist attractions in Madrid — whether you have one day or five days in Madrid, you shouldn’t miss it!. The museum has the world’s finest collections of European art, including works from Hieronymus Bosch, El Greco, Peter Paul Rubens, Titian, and Diego Velázquez. In total there are 8,600 paintings and over 700 sculptures — so plan your visit accordingly and decide what you really want to make sure you see.

#5 Market Hop at el Mercado de Vallehermoso + Mercado de Antón Martín + El Mercado de San Miguel

A vegan guide to Madrid isn’t complete without visiting one of their many markets! Markets are one of my favorite things to explore — each is different and provides a unique look into the culture of where you are. These three markets have a terrific selection of local food, handmade items, music, and more to experience.
