Voyageurs national park houseboat rental: voyagaire houseboat rental review.

voyagers rentals reviews

Finding the right Voyageurs National Park houseboat rental can feel overwhelming. The cost to rent a houseboat is not cheap, so making sure you choose the right option for your budget and needs is important.

Voyagaire Lodge and Houseboats is located on Crane Lake and is one of the best houseboat rentals in Voyageurs National Park. After much research and comparison to other houseboat rentals, I decided to rent a houseboat from Voyagaire for my first visit to the park. How did it go? Here’s what I loved, what could have been better and my overall Voyagaire review.

What to expect when renting a houseboat from Voyagaire?

What i love about voyagaire houseboat rentals, what i don’t love about voyagaire houseboat rentals, overall opinion on renting a houseboat from voyagaire, ebel’s voyageur houseboats | orr, minnesota, rainy lake houseboats | international falls, minnesota.

  • How does Voyagaire's houseboat rental price compare to others?

Is Voyagaire pet-friendly?

How much gas will i need, how cold is the water, what should i bring on the houseboat, can i charge my electronics , is voyagaire a good voyageurs national park houseboat rental option.

Voyagaire Lodge and Houseboats is located just outside of Voyageurs National Park on Crane Lake. From here, you can easily travel into the park with a short drive by boat. Out of the main Voyageurs National Park houseboat rental companies, Voyagaire is the most southern and closest to the Twin Cities.

Pro Tip: If you haven’t yet, read these 15 essential things to know before renting a houseboat in Voyageurs National Park !

The Voyagaire staff were helpful from the beginning of the booking process. They did a great job answering my many questions via email and adding kayaks to my rental after the initial booking.

When you arrive at Voyagaire Lodge, go inside to check-in. The staff will be there to answer your questions, talk through the optional damage insurance (which I recommend), and connect you with a team that will help transfer your luggage and gear from your vehicle to your houseboat.

Before you board, consider enjoying a meal on the outdoor patio of the Voyagaire Lodge overlooking Crane Lake.

Once onboard, another team member from Voyagaire will give you an orientation to the houseboat. They will cover things like how to operate the generator, how to charge the radio, how to navigate the lakes, and more. Be sure to ask any questions that are on your mind during this orientation.

When you’re all set, a Voyagaire team member will drive your houseboat away from the dock while you and another team member retrieve your fishing boat. This is to ensure that you don’t damage any of the other houseboats docked nearby. Once away from the dock area, they will help you secure your fishing boat and send you on your way into Voyageurs National Park!

Pro Tip: Wherever you rent from a motorized fishing boat must be towed behind the houseboat for safety reasons. If you do not have your own motorized fishing boat, you must add one to your reservation.

voyagers rentals reviews

Voyagaire’s houseboats vary quite a bit in age, furnishing and amenities. I rented one of their smallest houseboats, the 360 Deluxe Suncruiser. This particular boat was a bit dated on the interior, but was clean. I chose this model due to its size (3 double beds), relatively low cost, and the upper deck seating. This model has a front and back patio plus the rooftop, so lots of outdoor space onboard.

Each day in Voyageurs is an adventure! Some visitors like to use one spot as their homebase and others like to move locations several times during their stay.

While there are some amenities that are standard across Voyageurs National Park houseboat rentals, some are unique to Voyagaire.

  • Hospitality Service (see below)
  • Most accessible location from the Twin Cities
  • Discounted pricing before and after peak season
  • Pet-friendly
  • Helpful and responsive maintenance crew (we flooded the motor on fishing boat and needed assistance)
  • Friendly staff made planning less stressful
  • Access to Grassy Bay, Sand Point Lake and Lake Namakan

Grassy Bay Cliffs rise 125 feet above the water in Voyageurs National Park.

One of my favorite parts of renting a houseboat from Voyagaire was the hospitality service. This is basic room service by water. Each day, place an order over the radio for just about anything you need and give them a location. By afternoon, they will locate you and deliver your goods! We even overheard a woman ask for her husband to be delivered to their boat (he had a travel delay). If you need to restock on grocery items, ice, gasoline, or even specific grocery items, they will have you covered.

Pro Tip: When you check in Voyagaire will automatically charge you $60 for this service, but if you don’t use it you will get that refunded when you return.

My experience was mostly positive and I would rent from Voyagaire again. However, there are a few things I want to mention.

First, we were the first people to take this specific houseboat out for the season. We ran into a few issues that should have been caught before we took the boat out. The potable water system smelled like fish, it was inedible. We deduced that there had been antifreeze left in there or not flushed out entirely. Fortunately, I had brought my water filter and we had endless lake water that we could use to drink but that wasn’t ideal. We could have requested the maintenance team come and address it, but decided not.

A related issue was that the fridge smelled like fish. I’m guessing that the fridge had been closed all winter and we were the unfortunate people who were hit with these lingering odors. We used some Clorox wipes to clean it and this took care of the issue. So, especially if you are the first renter of the season, check all the systems and appliances before you leave the dock.

Sawyer Squeeze water filter next to a glass of clear water on the rooftop of a houseboat in Voyageurs National Park.

Second, the orientation was relatively unstructured. In fairness, the employee doing our orientation was brand new (their first orientation ever). I would have preferred they have someone shadowing them to make sure everything was covered. We asked a lot of questions and ended up getting what we needed.

Finally, the interior of the houseboat we rented was dated. This wasn’t a big deal to me but might be to others. All of the boats are purchased at different times and naturally are going to have differing levels of wear and tear. I am sure this is the case at any of the houseboat rental companies.

Pro Tip: One quirk about renting a houseboat in Voyageurs National Park is that personal checks, money orders, or cashiers checks are preferred for final payment to avoid a 3% credit card fee. This applies to most of the major houseboat rental companies. I mailed a check to avoid the additional fee.

Voyagaire is a great place for first timers renting a houseboat in Voyageurs National Park. Their easy-to-access location, reasonable cost, helpful staff, and hospitality service makes for a great experience. When renting early in the season, I would take extra precautions checking the systems onboard given the couple of hiccups we ran into.

How Does Voyagaire Houseboat Rental Compare to Alternatives?

There are three primary houseboat rental companies at Voyageurs National Park. Here are some highlights of how they compare.

Ebel’s is a local favorite houseboat rental company, located on the Ash River in Orr. The drive from the Twin Cities is about 5 hours. Their location offers easy access to Lake Kabetogama and Namakan Lake, both popular for fishing and recreation. Prices are comparable to Voyagaire, if not slightly higher.

Why Voyagaire is better: The hospitality service is a nice plus. Also, their location on Crane Lake is more accessible for most people, especially for a short visit to Voyageurs.

Rainy Lake is the most northern and remote of the popular Voyageurs National Park houseboat rental companies. Located in International Falls, it’s an approximately 5.5 hr drive from the Twin Cities. Prices are comparable to the alternatives. They offer a similar hospitality service, though there is an additional charge for same day delivery.

Why Voyagaire is better: While both companies offer a hospitality service, Voyagaire has a standard same-day delivery. Again, their location is easier to get to as it’s closer to Minneapolis, St Paul and Duluth.

Frequently Asked Questions about Voyagaire Houseboat Rentals

Voyagaire has a great FAQ page and rental rules on their website that I recommend reviewing.

How does Voyagaire’s houseboat rental price compare to others?

Overall, I think you’ll find that the Voyageurs National Park houseboat rental pricing varies some across the main companies, but not by a lot. The main difference is the size and layout of their fleets and the amenities offered. Voyagaire was slightly less expensive than the alternatives when I booked my rental. Consider taking advantage of the discounts offered before and after peak season to reduce the cost.

Yes, though there is a pet fee.

This varies depending on how much you plan to move around the park and how long you are staying. In general, a tank of gas will last you a week. If you are running low on gas, the hospitality service can deliver some to you.

It’s cold! Even on hot days in the summer, the water remains relatively cold. The ideal time of year for swimming is from mid-June through September.

I wrote an entire blog post about this! Read my Voyageurs National Park houseboat packing list .

Yes! Most, but not all, boats are fitted with a generator which allows you to charge your electronics using the outlets onboard.

I say yes – and I can’t wait to visit again and explore more of Voyageurs National Park!

Glad to hear you had a mostly good experience with Voyagaire, John. Sorry to hear about the leaking roof and dated boat. The boat I rented was a bit dated too, but fully functional and no leaks. I follow Voyagaire on social media and know that they are in the process of updating their fleet so hopefully next time you visit you can try out one of the newer boats!

Rented a Voyager houseboat last year. The lake and the service was outstanding. The only drawbacks were the boat was very dated and leaked through the roof onto the sofa whenever it rained. Tough to sleep on a wet pull out.

What an awesome adventure to share with your family! Glad to hear you had a good experience with Ebel’s. The wonderful thing about Voyageurs is that there’s so much to explore! You can go back again and again and never stay at the same sites.

Our family just got back from Voyageurs National Park this past Monday, We rented a 50 ft houseboat from Ebel’s as it was the only boat available when we planned the trip in the spring, the boat and staff were awesome ,it was such a memorable experience we hope to do this a few more times,,such a great and beautiful place

It’s definitely a park worth revisiting! Agreed – so glad we had some extra gear so the hiccups didn’t interrupt our experience.

I got to go to Voyageurs National Park a couple years back but definitely would love to go back again someday and it’d be awesome to get to rent a houseboat! I’m glad you had a water filter system + great tips on just checking everything beforehand to avoid those hiccups!

Ha ha, yep! The funny part is that all of Voyagaire’s boats can hear what happens over the radio so we all got to listen to the husband exchange 🙂

I’m really thankful we were prepared and those couple of mishaps didn’t derail our experience. We ended up having a great time!

Glad you found this helpful, Karen! It’s important to me to be fair and honest when I review an experience. Glad your houseboat experience in Kentucky turned out ok!

Awesome, glad you came across this post! Yes, you are required to have a motorized fishing boat in tow. You add that on to the houseboat rental (because many people have their own boats and don’t need a rental). You can add on other watercraft like kayaks or canoes as well, which can be stored on the upper deck or in the fishing boat if you have tie down ropes.

Driving it was mostly fine if you have some experience with boats. There is a free app called Navionics that I highly recommend, which works offline and allows you to navigate obstructions and depth throughout the park. The first day we had extremely high wind which made it pretty difficult to land the boat, but we worked together and got it done. After that, it was no problem at all.

My dog didn’t join us this time, but I would definitely bring him in the future!

You’re welcome, Amy! Happy to share my experience so that others can enjoy this beautiful place.

So happy to share all about Minnesota! It’s definitely an underrated destination for outdoor adventures. Hope you and your family can come explore here someday!

You’re welcome! Happy I could give you a new idea for a future adventure 🙂

Yep, it’s an incredibly unique national park and houseboating is a great way to experience it. It’s a beautiful part of Minnesota and unlike any other national park I’ve visited! Hope you’re able to see it yourself someday.

Sounds like quite an adventure! Hope you were able to enjoy yourself minus the mishaps. I’ll have to keep houseboating in mind when I visit Lake Powell!

It’s such a unique experience and the perfect way to experience Voyageurs National Park!

You’re welcome! So glad the timing worked out. If you have questions as you plan your trip, don’t hesitate to contact me. I’d be happy to help!

Heh! That is awesome that if your husband is late, you can have him delivered to your boat!! 😀

It’s a bit of a shame about the stinky water and fridge, but it sounds like you had a fabulous time testing out boat life!!

You always give very fair reviews. I appreciate you commenting on both the positive and negative of each company. This is a helpful review. We rented a houseboat once in Kentucky and I wish I would’ve had this way to evaluate companies before we did it. It actually turned out OK but that was just pure luck.

' src=

This is something I really want to try, and I know exactly where to go when I’m ready to plan my trip! You had the houseboat, kayaks, and a fishing boat with you? How was driving it? Did your dog enjoy it?

' src=

I love the idea of renting a houseboat—thank you so much for doing the heavy lifting and actually checking it out.

' src=

This looks like a great time! I want to rent one of these house boats. My family would love this type of vacation. Great article, I learned a lot on a area I haven’t explored yet.

' src=

I’ve thought about renting an RV before but never a houseboat. You’ve opened up a whole new realm of possible trips. Thanks for sharing!

' src=

What a cool and unique experience! I had no idea you could see Voyageurs National Park via a houseboat. Pinning this to my national park dream board!

' src=

Sounds like a fun experience for sure. My last time on a house boat at Lake Powell had us dealing with some fun issues as well as proper care wasn’t taken before turning the boat over to a new customer.

' src=

Wow, I have never seen a houseboat like that and it looks so cool! I’m saving this, because I would love to do something like that… looks like a cool experience!

' src=

This post is so timely as we are looking to visit Voyageurs National Park this year and renting a houseboat. Thanks for this honest review to help manage expectations.

What to Know

It has a game cast and a premise ripe with potential, but Voyagers drifts in familiar orbit rather than fully exploring its intriguing themes.

It has a decent cast and some interesting twists on its Lord of the Flies -inspired story, but Voyagers is slow to get going and sputters out in the end.

VOYAGERS (Newport Beach) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

Girl of 10,000 Lakes

Evoking inspiration and wonder through the beauty of the great outdoors.

Lady of the Lake on Rainy Lake

A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO HOUSEBOATING AT VOYAGEURS NATIONAL PARK

girlof10000lakes

A boat with all of the amenities of a home + a gorgeous lake surrounded by islands, pines and glacial landforms + a national park full of hiking trails + your family or good friends = one awesome vacation!

Considering renting a houseboat for your trip to Voyageurs National Park? Look no further. I’ve put together a guide to help you bon voyage and embark on your national park journey into pristine wilderness, all while living on a boat.

Minnesota is home to Voyageurs National Park . It’s located on the northern most tippy tip of the state near International Falls. What makes this national park unique? Around 40 percent of it is water, there are 655 miles of undeveloped shoreline, and more than 500 islands. Talk about #lakelife. So what better way to discover Voyageurs than while living on a houseboat?

A big thank you to Rainy Lake Houseboats for partnering with Girl of 10,000 Lakes to make this post possible.  This guide and all words on Girl of 10,000 Lakes are my own. I’m glad to partner with Minnesota businesses like Rainy Lake Houseboats to bring you insightful, fun ideas to make the most of the great outdoors.

BOOKING YOUR TRIP

With five couples onboard for the adventure, we ended up booking our houseboat with Rainy Lake Houseboats located on Rainy Lake. A quick Google search is all it really takes to find out you have options for a houseboat rental.

First, figure out what lake you want to go to between Rainy, Kabetogama, Namakan, and Sand Point Lakes. Rainy Lake is the largest lake in Voyageurs National Park.

I learned very quickly that you need to book early to get the dates you want. Our group definitely wanted a long weekend rather than clumped up weekdays. We were somehow able to snag a Thursday – Sunday in August, so three nights total.

Houseboats at Voyageurs National Park

FIGURING OUT COST

It’s not as pricey as you might be thinking! The cost depends on the houseboat. Some boats fit two people comfortably while others can fit up to twelve.

At Rainy Lake Houseboats, a two-person houseboat  aka the ‘ Honeymooner ‘ starts at around $285/day. The ‘ Voyageur ‘ which fits 6-10 people is $560/day. We ended up going with Lady of the Lake . It fits 10-12 people and includes four bedrooms + two pullout couches. There’s even a hot tub on the roof! Lady of the Lake comes to about $1160 per day + gas + tax.  So between ten people, it comes to around $750/person total for a large 54′ houseboat with all of the amenities you’d need to live comfortably for a few days. There’s a three night minimum, which ended up being perfect for our group.

We recently booked a three-night trip to Vegas and it came to around $830/person. It’s comparing apples to oranges, I know. But Voyageurs ends up being very cost-effective! You won’t be eating out all the time since most of your meals will be on the boat or campsites. Plus, if each couple takes responsibility for cooking a meal — it ends up being a cost-saver too. If you’re looking for a northwoods getaway that actually feels like a vacation with an excursion, renting a houseboat and exploring Voyageurs National Park is definitely the way to go.

Rainy Lake Houseboat Lady of the Lake

BEFORE YOU GO

Lucky for all of us, there’s a general packing list on Rainy Lake’s website. Rainy Lake Houseboats also takes care of getting the permit squared away for your national park visit.

Here are a few things to do before you journey up to International Falls:

  • Figure out meals. If you’re going with a big group of people, have each person or couple take care of one or two meals for the group. You’ll get a wide variety of flavors and cuisine. The houseboats have full kitchens plus a grill so you can make anything you want.
  • Research Voyageurs National Park. Take a look at this very helpful map on the National Park Service’s website. You’ll see that there are tons of houseboat campsites to choose from. Houseboats must be moored to shore from sundown to daylight so it’s probably a good idea to have a loose plan of what area you’d like to camp at each night. You can also research the national park and plan some day hikes and visit destinations like Kettle Falls.
  • Download the Navionics Boating Marine & Lakes app onto your phone. The map shows your houseboat in real time which will help you plan routes. It also shows you the depth of the water and fishing spots that people have marked.  I believe there’s a two-week trial period so you can actually use the app for free as long as you download it just before you go on your trip.
  • Be sure to have someone in your group that has knowledge of driving a boat. Rainy Lake Houseboat’s crew will go through it with you, but I definitely recommend having prior experience operating at least a single engine boat. If you know how to operate a pontoon, you can definitely operate a houseboat with a little guidance. If you need some assistance, considering hiring a Spot Guide  who will help with chart reading and navigation while you drive the houseboat.

Fishing at Voyageurs National Park Rainy Lake

HELPFUL TIPS & NOTES

  • We really enjoyed hiking Anderson Bay Trail. There’s a beautiful scenic overlook and even an area some people like to cliff jump from.
  • Bring your fishing gear. Rainy Lake is known for its walleye fishing. We caught six walleyes while cruising around in the aluminum row boat that comes with the houseboat (none of them were worth keeping — but it was fun to catch!). Bring your spinning rod and reel, jigs, bobbers, slip bobbers and live minnows.
  • Don’t know where to start fishing? Rainy Lake Houseboats also offers a fishing guide service for $400/day for two people. Consider going on a guided trip with them on the first day and go off on your own the remaining days.
  • If you end up sleeping in one of the areas with a pullout couch, bring a suspension curtain rod with long drapes. That way, you can make that area a bit more private. That’s what we did!
  • Get to your campsite by 3 p.m. if you can. Houseboat campsites are on a first come first serve basis. It’s a good idea to claim your site early during peak season so that you’re not wandering around for a site close to sunset.
  • Pack plenty of bug spray.
  • Bring your own pillows, sheets and comforter.
  • Pack extra ice to leave in the freezer.
  • Bring some air freshener for the bathroom. Sharing one bathroom between ten people… you get what I’m saying.
  • Bring games, puzzles and books for rainy days.
  • You end up living in the same clothes most of the time, so packing minimally is recommended.
  • Bring water shoes.
  • Be sure to close the sliding glass doors so that flies and bugs don’t congregate inside.
  • You won’t need your passport as long as you only camp and fish in the U.S. If you’re planning to visit Canadian shores or fish in Canada, let Rainy Lake Houseboats know ahead of time during your booking. You’ll need proper permits, mooring tags and fishing licenses.
  • The hot tub is awesome. There’s something amazingly relaxing about soaking up in a hot tub while cruising on the lake or at night while gazing at the stars.
  • Be sure to visit Kettle Falls Hotel. There’s a fun little bar with a very crooked floor and even a sit down restaurant. It actually used to be owned by the same family that started Rainy Lake Houseboats.’

I did a quick call-to-action on an Instagram story right after our trip for this specific blog post. I asked if you had any questions about our houseboating experience. Here are your questions and my answers!

Q: How comfortable are the beds? A:  It’s definitely more comfortable than you’d expect! The queen beds in the rooms were comfortable, I’m told. I slept on the pullout couch and it was a thinner mattress with not much spring support. But it was still luxury compared to sleeping on a thermarest on the ground in a tent.

Q:  Can you still have an area all to yourself? A:  There are bedrooms that you can have all to yourself! So yes! Plus, even with ten people onboard, we were not all in the same area at the same time. Some folks spent their time on the front deck, others were in the living room, while some were hanging out on the upper deck or roof.

Q:  Would this experience be good for small children? A:  Totally!  I am definitely planning on bringing my future children here someday. The main deck has sliding glass doors so they can safely be inside when the boat is moving. But it’s also safe on the upper deck and front deck. The wall of the boat comes up high enough to keep everyone within the boat. They will have a blast playing in the water while the houseboat is moored. Bring some games, toys and coloring books to do while indoors. Be sure to stop at the visitors center and learn about becoming a Junior Ranger . I think older children may appreciate it more though. There’s a waterslide on the houseboat that teenagers would really enjoy.

Q:  How much did it cost? A:  Depending on the houseboat, it can be anywhere from $285/day to $1160/day. Also factor in tax and gas. But full disclosure, we did end up working out a discount with Rainy Lake Houseboats in exchange for services including photography and videography. It’s one of the ways I’m able to continue providing blogs posts like this and share high quality content with you.

Q:  How did you rent yours? A:  I did a bit of research on the ol’ Google. I inquired online through Rainy Lake Houseboat’s website which led to an email and eventually a phone conversation where I made my first deposit.

Q:  How was the fishing? A:  We were there in mid-August and still were able to catch six walleyes. They were all under 13″ but maybe that’s because it was so late in the season or we weren’t fishing in the right spots. We heard other people had good luck along some structures near Blueberry Island. You can look through the Navionics map to see if there are any locations people have marked as “structure” with successful fishing.

Q:  Pros and cons? A:  Pros:

  • It was a unique experience that I don’t think you can really get anywhere else. This is a very remote part of the northwoods with beautiful pine trees, glittering stars with basically zero light pollution and you get camping experience but with a bit of luxury .  You get a real bed, air conditioning, a full kitchen and protection from the rain.
  • You’re able to go from campsite to campsite with ease. Switch it up each day and discover a new campsite!
  • There’s a bathroom with flush toilet and a shower!
  • The hot tub makes you really feel like you’re living the dream.
  • Great fishing!
  • Enough room for just two people or up to 12 people — so you can have a romantic getaway or a big party if you want!
  • It’s an affordable vacation that I would totally do again!
  • Someone from your group should feel comfortable around a boat. I know that is not always the case, but I definitely recommend having some boating experience beforehand.
  • You cannot drop anchor in the middle of the lake. You have to be moored along shoreline in order to “park.”
  • You should be familiar with navigating waterways. There’s a whole buoy system with channel markings to help guide you on where it’s safe to drive the boat. Take a look at the navigation guide .
  • There’s only one bathroom so you may be sharing it with a crowd.
  • Crews recommended that we power down the generator before going to bed and power back up when we wake up. However, once the generator is shutdown, the water won’t run and electricity is off — including the air-conditioner. Correction:   There is water available 24/7 on the houseboat, both fresh and lake water are supplied via 12 volt water pumps. The switches on the console need to be on for the water to run.
  • You’re basically confined to a boat during the day while traveling, so make sure to bring people you enjoy being around. 🙂

I had so much fun on this Rainy Lake Houseboat trip to Voyageurs National Park. It was a vacation unlike any other I’ve been on. I got to spend time on a spectacular lake with my close friends, go fishing, have bonfires every night, hot tub while cruising, hike the national park trails, visit some of the historic sites and live on a boat.

Hot tubbing on a houseboat

So that’s it! What do you think? Would you go on a houseboating adventure at Voyageurs National Park? Comment below!

Wow, this actually looks pretty cool. I’ve never considered houseboating because I’m nervous around water but it gives me that cruise feel.

I totally recommend it! It is definitely more like a cruise than just a regular boat. 🙂

Wow, this is so crazy awesome. We want to do this so very much!! Great article.

You and your wife definitely should! Take the whole fam. It’s a fun experience for all.

What a great idea! I never thought about doing a houseboat trip!

I hadn’t either until I started researching ways to visit Voyageurs. You can definitely regular camp or stay at a cabin — but I highly recommend houseboating. Such a unique and memorable experience!

Do all of the boats come with a smaller boat to run around in or was it just because you got a big one?

It’s an option for all boats! I believe it’s an add-on option. You can also bring your own boat or canoe if that’s an option for you.

Did anyone have trouble with seasickness? We’re doing this trip in August, so wondering about Dramamine, etc. Thanks!

Looks great. Thanks for the write up. The YouTube video is great. That’s how I found this. You should link directly to this from the YouTube video because this is super useful for people like me that want to learn more! 😉

Thank you! Awesome. Thanks for the tip. I definitely will!!

I have canoeing experience but very little power boat experience. It sounds like this may be too much to ask to handle the house boat. I was with a group once on a houseboat on the Mississippi but that was it. I would love to try it but don’t know if it is right for me unless I bring an experienced power boater with me.

I think it’s definitely helpful to have someone who has driven/parked a motor boat before. But they do a pretty good job on walking you through the whole process even if you don’t have experience — so I would chat with them beforehand to make sure you’re comfortable with that before committing to a houseboat. Plenty of people who aren’t experienced have taken the houseboats out. Hope that helps!

Hi Jenny– Your info comes to me at the right time, since I’m thinking to visit the Boundary Waters. Do you know if there’s a houseboat size for just two people? Where would I rent that? Thanks.

Hey there! This would be Voyageurs National Park and not the BWCA. But yes! There definitely is a two person houseboat. I believe the smallest that Rainy Lake Houseboats has is the Honeymooner, made for two people at 37’.

Hope that helps! https://www.rainylakehouseboats.com/houseboats/the-honeymooner/

9 New Books We Recommend This Week

Suggested reading from critics and editors at The New York Times.

  • Share full article

Our recommended books this week include two very different kinds of memoirs — RuPaul’s “The House of Hidden Meanings,” about the drag icon’s childhood and path to superstardom, and Alexandra Fuller’s “Fi,” about the death of her 21-year-old son — as well as a biography of the art collector Isabella Stewart Gardner, a study of Germany’s self-reckoning after World War II, a look at what Abraham Lincoln’s era has in common with ours and a history of baseball in New York.

In fiction, we recommend a romance novel, a twisty detective story about translators on the hunt for a missing author and a stylish story collection from Amor Towles. Happy reading. — Gregory Cowles

FI: A Memoir Alexandra Fuller

In her fifth memoir, Fuller describes the sudden death of her 21-year-old son. Devastating as this elegant and honest account may be — and it’s certainly not for the faint of heart — it also leaves the reader with a sense of having known a lovely and lively young man.

voyagers rentals reviews

“A sublime writer. … This book is a mesmeric celebration of a boy who died too soon, a mother’s love and her resilience.”

From David Sheff’s review

Grove | $28

WAKE ME MOST WICKEDLY Felicia Grossman

The second of Grossman’s fairy-tale-inspired romances set among Jewish families in Regency London finds the saucy scion of a disgraced family falling for a raven-haired criminal pawnshop owner. Based on “Snow White,” a fairy tale all about trust and betrayal, “Wake Me Most Wickedly” thrives in the space between what people hide and what they reveal.

voyagers rentals reviews

“Rich and complex and a little discomfiting, this book prefers difficult questions and nuanced truths to comfortable reductions.”

From Olivia Waite’s romance column

Forever | Paperback, $9.99

TABLE FOR TWO: Fictions Amor Towles

Towles, known for his wildly popular books like “A Gentleman in Moscow,” collects six short stories set in New York around the new millennium. There’s also one story set in Golden Age Hollywood, a continuation of his novel “Rules of Civility.”

voyagers rentals reviews

“There’s more here than high gloss. … Sharp-edged satire deceptively wrapped like a box of Neuhaus chocolates, ‘Table for Two’ is a winner.”

From Hamilton Cain’s review

Viking | $32

THE NEW YORK GAME: Baseball and the Rise of a New City Kevin Baker

What makes New York baseball unique, the novelist and historian argues in this insightful, beautifully crafted narrative — which concludes with the end of World War II — is its role as chronicler of cultural change. Whatever baseball’s roots in cow pastures and small towns, it came of age as an urban game.

voyagers rentals reviews

“Baseball grew as New York City grew. … One hopes for a second volume from Kevin Baker, every bit as good as this one.”

From David Oshinsky’s review

Knopf | $35

THE EXTINCTION OF IRENA REY Jennifer Croft

Croft is an acclaimed translator, and won the 2018 Man Booker International Prize for her English translation of Olga Tokarczuk’s “Flights.” It seems fitting that her first novel is a detective story following a troupe of translators tracking down their missing author.

voyagers rentals reviews

“Oh my mushrooms, ‘The Extinction of Irena Rey’ is incredibly strange, savvy, sly and hard to classify. I also couldn’t put it down.”

From Fiona Maazel’s review

Bloomsbury | $28.99

THE HOUSE OF HIDDEN MEANINGS: A Memoir RuPaul

The “Drag Race” superstar has already written three books, but from its black-and-white cover photo onward, this one is serious: A study in self-creation and survival that reveals a striver high on his own supply.

voyagers rentals reviews

“RuPaul isn’t just famous, glamorous and funny; he’s interesting. … Less a memoir than a prophecy unpacked in reverse.”

From Saeed Jones’s review

Dey Street | $29.99

CHASING BEAUTY: The Life of Isabella Stewart Gardner Natalie Dykstra

Isabella Stewart Gardner is best known today for the Boston museum that bears her name, but as Dykstra makes clear in her luminous new biography, the Gilded Age doyenne was herself a figure to be reckoned with. A daughter of wealth who married into more, the flamboyant Gardner quickly became the queen of haute bohemia — and in the process, one of America’s most serious collectors. A lively portrait of a moment, a woman and the power of art.

voyagers rentals reviews

“Astutely situates her subject within Gardner’s growing web of connections. … But its deeper revelations have more to do with Gardner’s emerging attunement to the emotional affirmation to be found in art.”

From Megan O’Grady’s review

Mariner | $37.50

OUT OF THE DARKNESS: The Germans, 1942-2022 Frank Trentmann

Over the past eight decades, the public debates about guilt and suffering in the wake of World War II have structured civil society in Germany. Trentmann tracks the evolution of this moral awakening with a remarkably rich history of the country that runs from the Battle of Stalingrad to the War in Ukraine.

voyagers rentals reviews

“Recognizes the costs and complexities of the quest for moral security. … As Trentmann captures, the post-1945 transformation has been remarkable.”

From Peter Fritzsche’s review

Knopf | $50

OUR ANCIENT FAITH: Lincoln, Democracy, and the American Experiment Allen C. Guelzo

In this beautifully written exploration of Abraham Lincoln’s thoughts on democracy, Guelzo argues that the president, who fought autocratic forces in the South while restricting civil liberties in the North, can help us figure out how to sustain a free society in the face of rising illiberalism today.

voyagers rentals reviews

“Guelzo points out the ‘uncanny’ similarities between Lincoln’s time and ours. … Reveals the fragility of democracy in such moments. But its precarity can also be a strength.”

From Parker Henry’s review

Knopf | $30

Voyager Craft Coffee

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Not to big. Super busy and super crowded. Also has outside seating. Yummy coffee options and teas. Great patries. Avocado toast and brie toast also good.

Great breakfast place with good coffee. Liked the attention to detail. Had the famously avocado toast. Tried the Santiago coffee and an almond milk latte. The almond toast was meh.

They have the BEST craft coffee and especially their signature drinks that you can have hot or cold and with different milks, soy, almond, oat, regular, etc. So it's signature made to order! On top of that their toasts are so good - so much... variety. My favorite are any of their baked goods - not your "store bought" variety but homemade, fresh, delicate and delicious. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and if you happen to be in when the owners are there - jackpot! They definitely know their coffee and how to make a "getting coffee" an "experience" vs just an activity. Love the environment - cozy and smart - they even have little hooks under the tables to hang your purse/bags so you can fully utilize the table. And as a bonus - they have outdoor seating - so if you want to bring your doggy - they are definitely welcome. HIGHLY MUST VISIT if in the area!! They actually opened another location at San Pedro Square which has more seating but quality, service and atmosphere is similar. More

A really nice local coffee place with a great asssortment of baked goods. Plenty of tables inside and out. Right across the street from Santa Clara University.

The staff is super knowledgeable and service is great. Chai Latte is memorable. Am definitely returning back.

I visited Voyager with my sister in law and niece while they visited San Jose. Niece purchased a hot chocolate, which was awesome and came with pretty art that kept her occupied for a while. S-i-l got an almond latte, she said it was perfect.... I got their matcha and it was the best one I've probably ever had in my life. The service and ambiance are also amazing. No wonder they're so well rated. More

Limited parking and small dining in and out but it's worth it. Some breakfast items and baked goods. Water dishes on patio for the doggies.

I’m writing this review as I stand in Voyager, sipping the seasonal Pumpkintown brew. With distinct amounts of nutmeg and pumpkin purée, it invokes memories of mom’s pumpkin pies over the holidays. Simply fantastic. My friend ordered the Savannah, a minty iced delight with real... mint leaves in it. Both of us are very happy at the moment. Also notably was the friendly staff, who walked us through the menu. They even offered to replace our drinks if we didn’t like them with something else! That’s a great way to keep happy repeat customers! Nicely situated off the main road, with plenty of light coming in. Along with plenty of tables and wifi, it’s a great place to sit, relax, and maybe work a little. All and all I will definitely stop here again! More

I’ve been enjoying lattes, espressos, and other coffee-based drinks here for the past two years or more. Staff is friendly, accommodating, and nice. Once a regular they remember not only your name, but also your drink, which in my case come with specifications. It was... a coffee shop under a different name/management- and passed as barely ok. Now it is my #1 choice if I want a good latte & too lazy to make it at home, or want to meet w/others. With all the weird coffee abominations offered by Starbucks & it’s likes, their Savannah is the only non-espresso based drink I enjoy (over ice) and enjoy it every time. They offer neighborhood discount too. Only regret: it’s a small space. Sometimes, there’s no seats available. More

First visit and will become my regular stop. Friendly service, relaxed atmosphere and exceptional coffee. I tried the Bali and it was perfectly balanced. The cafe macchiato was also perfect. We did not order food but the food we saw going out looked great. Skip... the rest and visit - you will not be disappointed. More

One of the best in my life. Must to try it! Meena is very friendly and helpful girl. Tnx for your job. Pet friendly place😘

voyagers rentals reviews

We are coffee snobs and know good coffee on the first sip. My daughter recommended that we try this place. We ordered the Goat Cheese toast, Brie toast, colorful cappuccino, and two iced Savannah mint & bourbon coffees. My two picky girls loved the toast... and I was pleased with the flavor of my coffee it was first rate goodness to say the least. More

voyagers rentals reviews

We had the avocado Brie sandwich very tasty $5. The blue goat toast also delicious $4. Two coffee drinks. The Santiago a bit spicy $4.90 a latte $3.90 and chocolate milk $3. Total $25.80. Outside seating. Nice staff. Nice place for lunch.
