Game Review
Whale's Voyage II : Die Übermacht, released in 1995, is the sequel to the sci-fi RPG Whale's Voyage created by neo Software.
The game is a mix of role-playing, space exploration, trading and a bit of dungeon crawling. You control the crew of the spaceship Whale, and you start by creating four characters, choosing between several classes (Soldier, Medic, Monk, Psionic, Biochemist, Bounty Hunter, Electrician, Rhetorician, Pilot, and "Cybertechnician").
With your spaceship, you will need to travel from one planet to another, and at each port, you can buy and sell goods. You can also land, and once on the surface, the game becomes a sort of dungeon crawler. In a way, it's a kind of precursor of Mass Effect . Unlike the first game, in Whale's Voyage II the exploration happens in real 3D. It is one of the few RPGs - another one is Ambermoon - to provide this feature on the Amiga.
Whale's Voyage II is an excellent game that received very positive reviews from several magazines. Good story, great intro, beautiful graphics, and the right combination of RPG and trading. Maybe the only weak point is the turn-based space combat, but you can't have everything.
The game was officially released only in German, but several years later one of the developers released a patch that translates the game to English. And this is what you can download now from GamesNostalgia. Enjoy!

Description
Whale's Voyage II: Die Übermacht is the sequel to Whale's Voyage . The story takes place twenty years after the crew of the spaceship Whale had won a great battle and became heroes, abolishing a powerful dictatorship. Now all of the money has been spent and the only thing the four heroes can do is to start trading again. The first job should be quite simple: just deliver some nuclear material to a foreign planet. There is also some payment in advance. But unfortunately the crew takes too much time for the delivery and so the easy job becomes a deadly task and they become involved in a conspiracy.
This game is similar to its predecessor, being a role-playing game with trading elements. The character creation allows the player to shape four characters, distributing their primary attributes, among which are combat-related stats as well as categories such as rhetorics and humanity. The player also must select a flaw for each character, ranging from bad temper to epilepsy. These flaws may affect the character's future behavior in certain situations: for example, a clumsy character would sometimes drop an object from his inventory. The choice of education background determines the characters's class. The available classes are Soldier, Medic, Monk, Psionian, Biochemist, Bounty Hunter, Electrician, Rhetorician, Pilot, and Cybertechnician. Human or alien race traits are assigned to the characters randomly.
When orbiting a planet, the player-controlled team can refuel, upgrade the ship with better components, or trade goods. Each planet has preference for a specific kind of wares, and the traders would declare it to the party. Unlike the first game, the player is not confined to one star system, though overall there are only nine planets to travel to in the game. Each planet is presented as a separate first-person maze-like environment. As opposed to the first game, exploration graphics are real 3D, with sprites for characters and objects. The interface has also been modified to include mouse control.
Following the main quest involves talking to NPCs and fulfilling their requests, but the player is free to travel to any planet and explore them from the onset. Through traveling itself is automatic, the Whale may be ambushed by hostile ships on the way, participating in turn-based tactical ship combat. Ground combat, on the other hand, proceeds in real time, with a "general attack" option that makes the party attack at once. Like in other RPGs, the heroes earn experience points by killing enemies or solving quests.
This being the second game in the series, events from the first game are referred to and some characters reappear. For example, a woman which will give the heroes a quest appeared in the first game, where she was still a little girl.

“"Hey, Mike! Look at this!" John shouted to his friend. 'There's some sort of liquid running out of the wall!" "This ship really is a pile of rust!" replied his chum in horror. "Looks like machine oil, kids." announced Frank, dipping his finger in the viscous, dark-brown liquid and testing it against his tongue. "Ugh! It's oil from the hyperdrives," he confirmed, spitting out the trial drop disgustedly. "Keep out of the hold unless you want another nasty shock," came a voice from the aft end of the ship. It was Sven, the fourth in the party.
To understand why these four are so agitated, we need to look a little further into the past - when they scraped together what little money they had, to buy themselves an impressive but remarkably cheap second-hand spaceship. a freighter to be precise. But as they later realised, their purchase was not quite the bargain they thought.
And now the helpless crew are marooned in a ship which is falling apart, at the end of the galaxy in a distant star system far beyond Earth. They are drifting in orbit around the planet Castra, as they can't even afford the price of fuel ...”
Released for DOS, Amiga computers and the CD32 in February 1993, Whale’s Voyage is a scifi dungeon crawler RPG made by a team of 5 people from NEO Software Productions in Austria. The game was published in Europe by Flair. A sequel called Whale's Voyage II: Die Übermacht was released in 1995. In 2018 it was finally translated into English by members of the English Amiga Board.
The game was released on either 7 floppy discs (one for save games) or one CD for the CD32. As far as I know the CD32 version does not feature any extras such as a CD quality sound track.
There are 6 planets to explore in the game, although only 4 of them have trading posts. All exploration is done in a 3D Dungeon Crawler style. Coupled with the complex menu controls and a 4 member party gameplay style, the game reminds me of an earlier CD32 game Liberation The Captive 2. In that game you control 4 robots as they explore a huge city, searching for a captive rebel. I personally think the graphics in Whales Voyage have aged much better, the but sheer gameplay complexity of Liberation was unrivaled on the Amiga.
Character creation is another interesting part of this game. You choose two parents, from a choice of 10, and then mutate the resulting baby. Each child also has randomly assigned backstory, some of which are very dark. For example your character may be abused as a child, sold into a child brothel or abandoned on the streets.
The controls were heavily criticized at the time for their dire lack of mouse support. Every time you attack it takes four menu selections per party member. This coupled with other lack of quality of life features being restricted to certain skill trees/duty roles, make the game a complete chore to play.
Stuart Campbell reviewed the CD32 version in Amiga Power, giving it 55%. Paul Presley’s review for CU Amiga was also harsh, giving the A1200 version 45%, he began the review thusly;
“How do you best describe Whale's Voyage? Hmm, take Elite . Now take all the bits that made Elite good (the three-dimensional space flights and the nail-biting combat) and throw them out. Next reduce the hundreds of visitable planets to a total of six and add a substandard Eye of the Beholder routine to simulate planet exploring.”
Back of the box
“Explore the Alien planets of the 24th century, with their sinister worlds and cities inhabited by strange sometimes violent people. Learn to tell friend from foe, as you try to outwit traders with your merchandise, the competition can be intense, but the rewards great, as you strive to financially secure your race.
Select your genetically created crew members and take off in your "Rustbucket" of a spaceship to the other solar planets, whilst battling against marauding pirate ships that will try to hinder your trading progress.”

Whale's Voyage 2 released in 1995 can be summed up in one sentence: it's the exact same game. Well, that's not entirely fair of me to say. The graphics are better with a Wolfenstein 3D-style engine used to explore planets and the ability to use the mouse but beyond that I struggle to find much that's significantly different.
