Best For:  This is a great option for those who wish to customise their itinerary but avoid the hassle of driving.

If you love your wine and are familiar with Barossa wineries then you may have specific cellar doors in mind. Wine tours from Adelaide usually have fairly rigid schedules so this is a great alternative for those who want to go at their own pace.

You will have to make your way to Stamford Plaza in Adelaide where the bus departs. It then follows a loop through various stops in the Barossa Valley, taking in between 10 and 12 wineries as well as some gourmet food producers.

The cost of the tour is similar to the price of hiring a car for the day but without the hassle of driving and counting drinks. The loop takes around 50 to 60 minutes so you can jump between as many wineries as possible or spend more time at your favourites.

The tour ends around 5pm and you will be returned to where it started. Stamford Plaza is actually a hotel which is in a great area of Adelaide. If you want to be able to stumble straight off the bus and into your room then click the link to browse prices and other nearby accommodation options.

McLaren Vale Wine Tours

McLaren Vale is a wine region sitting on the border between Adelaide and the Fleurieu Peninsula . The scenery here is absolutely stunning and in my opinion the best of all the South Australian wine regions.

This region is also known for it’s Shiraz but produces a softer and more approachable wine. This is due to the coastal climate, causing fewer extremes of temperature compared to the Barossa.

Clare Valley Wine Tours

The Clare Valley is the furthest region from Adelaide of this list but still easy to reach on a day trip. This region is known primarily for producing Riesling but you can find great examples of many other varieties as well.

The cellar doors here are mostly boutique and can offer a really personal experience. This sets Clare Valley wine tours apart from ones in the larger and more touristy regions.

Being a smaller region there is only one traditional wine tour available from Adelaide. This region is best explored on a weekend getaway from Adelaide . Once in the valley you can book a local tour or jump on a bike and explore at your own pace.

"A great day travelling the Barossa Valley via the Adelaide Hills with Bums on Seats tours. A good mix of wineries, food stops and scenery. A small tour that offered a unique experience while still going to the main attractions such as Maggie Beer’s and the Barossa Cheese shop. Recommend for those looking for a smaller tour without the big price tag. Thanks for a great day Paul!"

"We called to enquire about this tour at 7:30pm the night before. Paul answered, provided wonderful customer service and we booked the tour. We were picked up from our Hotel and taken to a number of beautiful wineries. The highlight was the Te-Aro Winery, beautiful wine and an amazing history. Paul was a fantastic guide, knowledgeable, funny, kind and accommodating. I couldn't have asked for anything better. I highly recommend this tour!"

"I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Paul was very knowledgable, entertaining and funny (he loves his dad jokes) about Adelaide, the areas we were travelling through, and about the wineries as well. All the wineries we visited were good and we had a good selection of wines to try at each and the owners/servers knew their stuff well. Te-Aro was my favourite winery of the day. The food stops were good too. And lunch was very good also. The tour was well worth it. Thanks Paul!"

"Great tour, only three of us 2 overseas students and myself the Aussie. Tour guide tailored the day to suit all of us and made sure the two young students got a very informative and enjoyable experience of SA. He was friendly knowledgeable and available when needed. Made sure our needs were met. Plenty of time for wine tasting and a pleasant lunch break. I highly recommend this company."

"Tour guide great tailored wine-tours by democratic vote by those on the particular day's tour Tour guide great at spotting koalas and kangaroos which made for a delightful Australian animal-watching! Tour Guide was freely and articulate communicator!!!"

By Bonnie Jackson

Add in stunning natural scenery, charming historic towns and exceptional gourmet experiences and you’ve got yourself the perfect getaway.

Clare Valley

Where: just under two hours north of Adelaide.

While most wine regions surrounding Adelaide are known for their bold reds, the Clare Valley is celebrated for its crisp whites, particularly its riesling. There are more than 50 cellar doors and premium wineries, and a string of charming villages like Sevenhill ,  Mintaro , Auburn,  Watervale  and Clare. One of the best ways to explore the region is by cycling the Riesling Trail , a 32-kilometre (20-mile) trail between the towns of Auburn and  Clare .

Where: a 40-minute drive south of the city.

With its enviable position between the hills and the Fleurieu Peninsula’s coastline, McLaren Vale is one of the most popular wine destinations in South Australia . The region is well known for its warmer climate reds, most notably shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, but has also mastered varietals such as sangiovese, roussanne and tempranillo. There are more than 80 cellar doors like d’Arenberg , as well as a plethora of culinary offerings, all set against a stunning backdrop of rolling green hills and coastal vistas.

Where:  a one-hour drive north-east of the city.

The Barossa Valley is deeply rooted in a rich wine heritage spanning seven generations. It is known for consistently producing exceptional vintages and bold, earthy shiraz, but also grows grenache, cabernet sauvignon, riesling and semillon. It is home to more than 170 wineries, including famous names such as Penfolds , Jacob’s Creek , Wolf Blass , St Hugo  and Henschke .

Where:  15 minutes from the city centre

Adelaide Hills is unlike other South Australian wine regions in that it produces great quality cool-climate wines like pinot noir, sparkling and chardonnay thanks to its location in the Mount Lofty Ranges. The closest region to Adelaide, it's home to more than 60 wineries and 40 cellar doors. Visit  Shaw + Smith  for a limited release wine flight experience, or  Penfolds’ Magill Estate ; one of Australia's most distinguished wineries, or wander around one of the region's most awarded cellar doors at The Lane , offering personalised tastings.

Where: a four-hour drive south-east of the city.

Located on the Limestone Coast, the Coonawarra region has a strong reputation as one of the country’s top red wine producers. Most favoured for its cabernet sauvignon, with shiraz following closely behind, the region is often referred to as South Australia’s red centre. Despite only stretching across a mere 20-kilometre (13-mile) strip, it packs in more than 25 cellar doors and a range of gourmet offerings. Visit the beautiful cellar door at Brand's Laira for a tasting, tour or a blend your own wine class.
