Following pick up from the door of your accommodation in Adelaide, you will first travel to the Whispering Wall. This is actually the dam wall of the Barossa reservoir but it has the amazing quality of being able to transmit sound for over 100 metres.

The first winery of the day is Château Yaldara. The beautiful building is a highlight in itself but they also produce some amazing wine that sets a standard for the rest of the tastings.

Leaving this winery you will spend a short time exploring the pretty town of Tanunda with it’s many examples of German architecture. This is a good time to refresh your palate and build up a solid appetite for lunch.

Said lunch consists of a sumptuous platter served at the Peter Lehmann winery. This beautiful cellar door sits on a riverbank and was built in the 1880s. The lawns and gardens of this estate are picturesque and the perfect place to enjoy a glass.

Following lunch you will hopefully be ready for another two wineries. Enjoy guided tastings at Lambert Estate and Wolf Blass, where you can also explore their impressive visitor centre.

On the way back to your accommodation you will pass through the extremely scenic Seppeltsfield region. There will be a stop at a location known to the guide where you can get some great photos.

Best For:  This is a great option for those who wish to customise their itinerary but avoid the hassle of driving.

If you love your wine and are familiar with Barossa wineries then you may have specific cellar doors in mind. Wine tours from Adelaide usually have fairly rigid schedules so this is a great alternative for those who want to go at their own pace.

You will have to make your way to Stamford Plaza in Adelaide where the bus departs. It then follows a loop through various stops in the Barossa Valley, taking in between 10 and 12 wineries as well as some gourmet food producers.

McLaren Vale is a wine region sitting on the border between Adelaide and the Fleurieu Peninsula . The scenery here is absolutely stunning and in my opinion the best of all the South Australian wine regions.

This region is also known for it’s Shiraz but produces a softer and more approachable wine. This is due to the coastal climate, causing fewer extremes of temperature compared to the Barossa.

Your guide will collect you from hotel around Adelaide or Glenelg in the morning. You’ll get a chance to see the beautiful Glenelg beachfront area before driving along the coastline to McLaren Vale.

Best For:  This is the tour for those who love to mix fitness and wine. Cycling is always amazing for connecting you to the landscape and revealing the best scenery.

This Adelaide wine tour can collect you from selected hotels in the CBD or you can meet at the start point. You’ll be transported to McLaren Vale and dropped off at one of the highest points in the region.

Ride through the pleasant Kuitpo Forest and then descend through amazing views of vineyards and lush hills. Your guide will lead you to two different wineries and any purchases can be transported in the tour vehicle. Additional wineries may be visited depending on time, so cycle hard!

The first stop is the beautiful Penfolds Magill Estate, right on the eastern edge of Adelaide. The grounds are quite something and great for photos, while the Penfolds name is synonymous with quality.

Refresh your palate at the next stop with some delicious cheese tastings. Udder Delights make a variety of cheeses and you can sample buffalo cheese!

After lining your stomach you’ll be ready for more tastings. Hahndorf Hill Winery sits perched on a hill above the town of the same name. The view from the balcony over the undulating rows of vines is sublime. Nepenthe Wines presents a different vista, tucked away amidst massive Eucalyptus trees.

The next stop is Pike and Joyce Wines, up at an impressive altitude of 593m, it is a great place to sample cool climate wines. Sidewood Estate is a 5 star Halliday accredited winery and produces some of the most delicious wine in the region.

At the end of the day you will be treated to a comprehensive tasting at Howard Vineyard. There you can also indulge in some amazing local produce. Their 2 vineyards in different locations provide a great comparison between the effects of microclimates in the Adelaide Hills.

Full-Day Hahndorf and Adelaide Hills Hop-On Hop-Off Tour from Adelaide

Stops: Hop on and off the bus at your choice of between 10 and 15 different stops.

This Adelaide Hills winery tour is a great budget option for mixing sightseeing and wine tasting. The bus will stop at 8 to 10 wineries and a number of other tourist sites including the town of Hahndorf.

The start point is at the Stamford Plaza Hotel in Adelaide, you will have to make your way here in the morning. The bus then takes you into the Adelaide hills and follows a recurring loop. You can spend as long as you like at each stop and then hop on the next bus that comes around.

Clare Valley Wine Tours

The Clare Valley is the furthest region from Adelaide of this list but still easy to reach on a day trip. This region is known primarily for producing Riesling but you can find great examples of many other varieties as well.

I had the pleasure of experiencing the Micro-Group Barossa Valley Wine Tour recently and it was one of the best days I’ve ever had! The tour began at Langmeil Winery, where I tasted some of the finest wines Australia has to offer.

From there, we went to Rusden Wines, which offered amazing views and a truly unique wine selection. After that, we enjoyed an incredible lunch in Tanunda followed by visits to Rockford Winery and Two Hands Wines Cellar Door. 

At each stop, we sampled various types of wines. The friendly guides were always available to answer questions and provide additional information about the wineries and wines being tasted. 

In all, it was a truly magical day filled with good company, delicious wines, and beautiful scenery. If you’re looking for an exciting wine tour experience in Australia’s Barossa Valley region, I highly recommend this Micro-Group tour!

Adelaide’s best wine regions

Set against a backdrop of rolling hills, glistening coastline and charming country towns, Adelaide’s wine regions are overflowing with more than just exceptional wine.

Known as the wine capital of Australia, Adelaide is surrounded by some of the best wine regions in the country, many of which are just a short drive from the city. Add in stunning natural scenery, charming historic towns and exceptional gourmet experiences and you’ve got yourself the perfect getaway.

Clare Valley

Where: just under two hours north of Adelaide.

While most wine regions surrounding Adelaide are known for their bold reds, the Clare Valley is celebrated for its crisp whites, particularly its riesling. There are more than 50 cellar doors and premium wineries, and a string of charming villages like Sevenhill ,  Mintaro , Auburn,  Watervale  and Clare. One of the best ways to explore the region is by cycling the Riesling Trail , a 32-kilometre (20-mile) trail between the towns of Auburn and  Clare .

Where: a 40-minute drive south of the city.

With its enviable position between the hills and the Fleurieu Peninsula’s coastline, McLaren Vale is one of the most popular wine destinations in South Australia . The region is well known for its warmer climate reds, most notably shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, but has also mastered varietals such as sangiovese, roussanne and tempranillo. There are more than 80 cellar doors like d’Arenberg , as well as a plethora of culinary offerings, all set against a stunning backdrop of rolling green hills and coastal vistas.

Did you know?

If you happen to be there on a Saturday, you can stop by the Barossa Farmers Market and fill up your picnic basket with delicious local goods.

Where:  a one-hour drive north-east of the city.

The Barossa Valley is deeply rooted in a rich wine heritage spanning seven generations. It is known for consistently producing exceptional vintages and bold, earthy shiraz, but also grows grenache, cabernet sauvignon, riesling and semillon. It is home to more than 170 wineries, including famous names such as Penfolds , Jacob’s Creek , Wolf Blass , St Hugo  and Henschke .

Adelaide Hills

At more than 710 metres (2,329 feet) above sea level, Mount Lofty is the highest point in the ranges. The lookout offers panoramic views as far as Kangaroo Island and Yorke Peninsula on clear days.

Where:  15 minutes from the city centre

Adelaide Hills is unlike other South Australian wine regions in that it produces great quality cool-climate wines like pinot noir, sparkling and chardonnay thanks to its location in the Mount Lofty Ranges. The closest region to Adelaide, it's home to more than 60 wineries and 40 cellar doors. Visit  Shaw + Smith  for a limited release wine flight experience, or  Penfolds’ Magill Estate ; one of Australia's most distinguished wineries, or wander around one of the region's most awarded cellar doors at The Lane , offering personalised tastings.

Guide to the Clare Valley

Where: a four-hour drive south-east of the city.

Located on the Limestone Coast, the Coonawarra region has a strong reputation as one of the country’s top red wine producers. Most favoured for its cabernet sauvignon, with shiraz following closely behind, the region is often referred to as South Australia’s red centre. Despite only stretching across a mere 20-kilometre (13-mile) strip, it packs in more than 25 cellar doors and a range of gourmet offerings. Visit the beautiful cellar door at Brand's Laira for a tasting, tour or a blend your own wine class.
