Working on a cruise ship
Opportunities for progression and the chance to see the world are just some of the reasons why life on the water could be for you
Cruise line companies constantly strive to build bigger and better ships, which means that there are an ever-increasing number of opportunities for those who'd like to work at sea. These opportunities are available in everything from accommodation, bar work and fitness to entertainment, childcare and retail.
Why work on a cruise ship?
The most obvious benefit of working on a cruise ship is the opportunity to travel the world. As an on-board member of staff you'll see far-flung destinations such as the Caribbean, South America, the Mediterranean, Europe and Asia. Find out more about working abroad .
Costs such as accommodation and food are taken care of. As you're usually on board ship for at least six months of the year, it's easier to save money without rent or other living costs to pay for and whatever you earn you keep as disposable income.
Another advantage is the connections you make when working on board. You'll meet a variety of people from all backgrounds, forge new friendships and make international contacts that will come in useful during your career.
Also worth a mention are the opportunities for progression. Cruise line companies invest time and money into training their employees, and once on board you'll be encouraged to seek promotion.
Working on a cruise ship is starting to sound pretty good, but life at sea isn't for everyone.
To reflect the fact that accommodation and living expenses are taken care of, salaries are often low, although earning tips can top up your wages.
And while you might be travelling the world it's certainly not a holiday. Hours for staff are long and days off are a rarity. Homesickness can also affect your time on board.
You'll share your living quarters with other crew members and as such you'll have to adapt to living in small, cramped conditions. It's also difficult to strike a good work/life balance as you're confined to the ship the majority of the time. You don't get the luxury of clocking off and going home like those working on land.
What jobs are on offer?
- Accommodation staff - positions include laundry staff, cleaners and stewards. These are for students and graduates with an interest in hospitality .
- Bar, restaurant and kitchen staff - the former is ideal for those with experience of bar work, especially if it involves cocktail making. Experienced waiting staff and professional chefs are also required by cruise companies.
- Casino staff - if you're an experienced croupier, working in the ship's casino could be a great option.
- Deck and engine room staff - these are responsible for maintenance and, therefore, the safety of passengers. Language skills may be useful for these positions. Roles will suit those with a degree or experience in engineering .
- Entertainment staff - one of the most competitive routes, these roles suit graduates who can dance, sing, host, or are qualified swimming instructors. You may even be tasked with arranging and leading excursions in a holiday representative , tourism officer or tour manager capacity.
- Fitness and beauty staff - for graduates with experience of, and qualifications in hairdressing, manicures, pedicures, massage and personal training .
- IT staff - on board information technology teams oversee and support all shipboard IT systems and operations. Roles suit those with a degree or experience in information technology .
- Managers - positions are available with cruise companies both on land and at sea. These roles are ideal for those with experience or qualifications in business, management or leisure, travel or tourism management. Discover how to answer common management interview questions .
- Medical staff - cruise companies are responsible for the health and safety of all passengers so medical staff are essential. Available jobs include on board doctors , nurses and paramedics .
- Nannies and children's entertainers - qualified nannies and people with experience of leading kids' clubs are in high demand, to babysit in the evenings or provide daytime entertainment. These openings may be ideal if you've studied childcare.
- Retail staff - on-board shops will employ graduates with experience of working in a retail environment.
Cruise lines typically promote from within, so entry-level jobs focus on front-line functions and customer service roles. Employers look for people with administrative and general management backgrounds, as well as people with customer service and sales skills.
Seasonal or full-time work is available. Many seasonal vacancies operate on contracts lasting between three and six months, with others stretching to a year.
Which cruise companies can I work for?
Cruise ship jobs are available with a variety of cruise companies, including:
- Avalon Waterways
- Celebrity Cruises
- Costa Cruises
- Crystal Cruises
- Disney Cruises
- Fred Olsen Cruise Lines
- Holland America Line
- Marella Cruises
- MSC Cruises
- Oceania Cruises
- P&O Cruises
- Princess Cruises
- Royal Caribbean
- Saga Cruises
- Silversea Cruises
- Titan River Cruises.
What qualifications do I need?
Cruise ship jobs are incredibly competitive so any relevant qualifications or work experience that you can add to your CV will help you to stand out to employers.
The type and level of required qualification depends on the job you're applying for and the cruise company you're applying to. Entry requirements vary between cruise operators so make sure you do your research before applying.
Degrees or professional qualifications are highly valued by employers and demonstrate a high level of competence in an industry where excellent customer service is essential.
It's likely that you'll need to be educated to at least degree level to get into IT, management and medical roles. A degree in an engineering subject may come in useful for those wanting to work in the engine room.
Professional qualifications are generally preferred if you'd like to work as a chef, beauty therapist, personal trainer, or nanny.
Accommodation, bar and restaurant staff and entertainers typically need some previous experience in a similar role.
It is possible to get a job on a cruise ship with no qualifications or experience, but you'll need to be prepared to start at the bottom and work your way up.
It is possible to get a job on a cruise ship with no qualifications or experience, but you'll need to be prepared to start at the bottom and work your way up. Basic safety training must be completed that are incorporated in the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) such as personal survival techniques, basic fire fighting and elementary first aid. You must also pass and possess a seafarers medical certificate. There are also various visa requirements for many ports around the world.
Search postgraduate courses .
How do I get a cruise ship job?
To start with you'll need to be over 21 years old. As well as the right qualifications you'll also need a valid passport, clean criminal record and English language proficiency.
When applying for jobs you should aim to discover as much as you can about the company that you're interested in working for. Knowledge of what the company offers and who their target market is is crucial. Each cruise company has a different strap line, which you’ll need to know and understand when applying for jobs.
Most large cruise companies recruit via recruitment agencies so make sure that you also read and understand the agency's application procedures.
Most applications are made with a CV and cover letter , or by completing an application form. Just like for any job you'll need to tailor your application to the specific role. Strive to stand out, as there will potentially be hundreds of people applying for each position, and be sure to include any relevant experience. For entertainment positions you’re generally required to submit a photograph with your application. Bear in mind that you're applying to work for the company, not on a specific ship.
There will likely be several application stages and these may include a video or telephone interview before you receive an invitation to be interviewed face-to-face.
Your personality is a key indicator of your suitability. Applicants must have a positive, can-do attitude. Employers desire confident and outgoing members of staff who are passionate about providing excellent customer service.

Working on board as a Nursing Officer
Working on board as a cruise ship doctor.
Dr Luke Mclennan joined Carnival UK from an Emergency Medicine training post within the NHS. He’s worked on board as a Doctor, Senior Doctor and now as Senior Manager, Fleet Medical Operations.
We asked luke some questions about his experience as a cruise ship doctor..
Why did you decide to work as a cruise ship doctor?
I had a number of colleagues that had previously worked at Carnival UK, and had always spoken fondly of their experiences. I had enjoyed working independently in Emergency Departments, and preferred the smaller teams in District General Hospitals, so felt that the shift across to working at sea would suit me.
What is a typical day like for a Doctor onboard a Cruise Ship?
I enjoyed forming a routine on board, after years of shift work. Clinic happens every day on board, and – short of any emergencies – you can get a good pattern together.
- 07:30 – wake up, look out of the window and remind yourself where you are!
- 08:00 – breakfast; there’s a great selection of meals prepared freshly each day on board
- 08:30 – get to the office, check emails
- 09:00 to 11:00 – Crew clinic, six crew attend – they are seen quickly, and given appropriate care and council – you form genuine friendships on board so clinic is an opportunity to check-in with your colleagues.
- 11:00 – Drills! Ships’ alarm sounds, you remain in the medical centre and ensure the stretcher party are ready to react. Some informal training takes place with the extrication devices.
- 11:30 – morning shift ends so it’s a chance to freshen up before lunch
- 12:00 – lunch
- 12:30 – 16:00 – you’re on call today, you get a call at 14:00 when a guest returns from ashore with an injured wrist. x-ray confirms a fracture so you and the duty nurse plaster the joint. She’s discharged by around 14:30. You then spend an hour making sure your referral letters and admin is up to date while you’re in the office.
- 16:00 – Clinic where you see a wide variety of clinical presentations.
- 18:00 – It’s Gala Night, you leave clinic and change into formal attire. As Officers it’s important that we spend time meeting and greeting guests.
- 19:00 – dinner – Doctor’s have deck privileges so it’s a table in a guest specialty restaurant tonight
- 20:30 – you’re on call overnight tonight, so it’s an early night
What are the medical facilities like on board?
Having come from a busy Emergency Department, I was already surprised to find the cupboards stocked, the trolleys organised and the prospect of my own desk and chair was quite something!
The ship has everything you can want and need from x-rays, blood tests, cross matching, wound management. The biggest resource that I had not been able to use in the past though, was time! I had as long as I needed (within reason) to see my patients.
What is the most interesting case you have had to deal with on board?
I have too many stories to mention! In my first week, I was asked to transfer a patient into Mykonos via tender. It was really exciting at the time, and I could compare it really well with my previous week on call in MAU. I knew I’d made a sound choice at that point. There were many more exciting and interesting cases after that too!
What do you get up to when you are not on call?
My guilty pleasure was to take the opportunity on a day in port, while not on call – to utilise the facilities on board. Finishing clinic, heading for a swim or a coffee on the deck in the sun, and catch up with friends or family back home. There are often social activities on board for the crew in the evening, with something for everyone.
Are you able to get off the ship in each port?
Naturally patient care takes priority, and having had my plans for a hour on the beach swapped for a patient call, we take opportunities where we can. The medical team is a close-knit family and would almost always pull together if there was a particular place we wanted to visit.
What is your fondest memory of working onboard?
I always enjoyed the sail ins, after spending five days at sea, arriving in Antigua on Boxing Day was a real treat. Again though, I have too many fond memories to reliably pick one!
I think the camaraderie is probably the most broadly positive aspect of working on board, and now have some friends for life that I really value as a result.
What was the recruitment process like for you?
I had inquired a couple of years before I applied, and made sure I had appropriate experience to be eligible. I contacted the recruitment team to book onto an open day, and was lucky enough to be through the interview process in no time at all. I was given lots of exciting information, and a contract in the weeks that followed, along with a huge box of uniform! Later that year I was cruising the Mediterranean on Queen Victoria, having left the Medical Assessment Unit just a few hours before! The team helped to work my start date around the end date of my hospital rotations, and the training team sorted out any courses that were required.
Do you have any recommendations for locums who are interested in becoming cruise ship Doctors?
I was a locum in the Emergency Department for a year, it was almost certainly the best piece of experience. On paper, applicants would need to evidence recent experience in the Emergency Department or Intensive Care Unit – and in reality the focus should be on obtaining confidence and competence in a broad cross section of clinical scenarios, through that process.
Are there progression opportunities once onboard?
When I told my colleagues in the NHS I was leaving to work at sea, I was told that it was fine for a year, but to expect a dead-end thereafter. I can’t say how wrong those people were, I have had countless opportunities that have arisen from my job within the company, both internally and externally. I have been so well supported by Carnival UK, and know there are similar pathways available for nurses within the fleet.

15 Incredible Cruise Ship Jobs (Get Paid To Travel!)
Posted: October 16, 2023 | Last updated: October 16, 2023
Traveling the world while getting paid to do it might sound like a dream, but it can be a reality if you take a job on a cruise ship.
Of course, this type of work isn’t for everyone — the hours can be long, and it may mean a lot of time away from home. But there are plenty of benefits as well.
If working for a cruise line sounds ideal, there are plenty of career opportunities on board. Here are 15 jobs that can help boost your bank account as you travel the world.
Editor's note: All salary figures are from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
12 legit ways to make extra cash
Activities coordinator
Even short cruises are packed with activities for travelers to engage in. Among other things, you'll find games, happy hours and live music.
An activities coordinator is similar to an event planner. In this role, you oversee things like recreation on board and coordinating shore excursion activities. The BLS does not offer wage information for this position.
If you want to start traveling more — and get paid to do it — this can be a good role to consider.

It’s no secret that people on cruises like to drink. Many cruise lines offer a food and alcohol package as part of the booking process.
The amount of money you can make working as a bartender on a cruise ship varies greatly, depending on whether guests are expected to tip. But the average salary for bartenders is $29,380 annually.
Casino dealer
Working as a dealer at a cruise casino can be an exciting gig. These workers may oversee poker, blackjack, roulette, and more games.
Gambling service workers make $31,290 a year. However, as with tending bar, the actual wages for casino workers on a cruise can vary.
Many cruise ships have cafeterias and restaurants for when guests are in the mood for fine dining.
Cruise ship chefs may be involved in cooking and planning menus for guests and staff. Chefs or head cooks make $56,520 on average annually.
Deckhands help maintain the cruise ship. They may be involved in keeping these massive ships running, including cleaning and maintaining equipment, loading cargo, and getting passengers safely on board.
The experience required to work as a deckhand can vary greatly depending on the job description. The BLS does not offer salary information for this position.
Entertainer
Cruise lines hire all sorts of entertainers, from dancers to cover bands and magicians.
Working on a cruise ship can be a great way to hone and improve your craft or even take it in a different direction. The average wage for entertainers and performers is $29.67 an hour, which equates to about $61,713 annually.
7 Things to Do If You’re Barely Scraping by Financially
Entertainment director
Cruise ships also need people to manage their entertainers, particularly if the ship has a lot of shows and performances scheduled.
Entertainment directors may be involved in scheduling staff, planning performances, and doing administrative work. The average salary for entertainment/recreation managers is $67,220 annually.
Fitness instructor
Many cruise ships also offer various fitness classes, including yoga, Zumba, spin, and more.
For qualified instructors, this can be a great way to stay healthy, make money, and travel the world all at the same time. The average fitness instructor makes $45,380 annually.
Hair/makeup artist
On cruise ships, hair and makeup artists may work in spas, providing services to guests looking to get pampered while on board, and may be needed to work with the ship’s performers.
The BLS groups barbers, hairstyles, and cosmetologists together and states an average of $33,400 annual salary for these workers.
6 Clever Ways to Crush Your Debt
Hotel director
Since a cruise ship is essentially a floating hotel, many employees with experience working in hospitality are needed.
Hotel directors ensure that guests are comfortable and enjoy their experience. They may also be involved in planning and coordinating cruise activities.
The average salary for lodging managers is $61,910 annually.
Some cruise ships also hire nurses to provide care to passengers and cruise staff.
The amount of money nurses make on average usually depends on the type of nurse. Registered nurses (RNs) make $81,220 annually. Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) make $54,620 a year.
Massage therapist
Many cruise passengers opt to take advantage of spa services. Massage therapists may work in a spa or travel to guests’ rooms with their equipment to provide massages.
Licensed massage therapists make just under $49,860 annually on average.
9 Things You Must Do Before The Next Recession
Cruise ships also frequently employ security staff to ensure the safety of guests and crew members. These workers may patrol the ship regularly and respond to any issues that come up.
The average salary for security guards is $33,030 annually.
Eating often and well is a big draw for many cruise passengers. Ships often have several restaurants on board and employ experienced servers to staff them.
Pay for these workers can vary, depending on the cruise line’s tipping policy. The average salary for a server in the U.S. is $29,120 annually.
Sales associate
Part of the beauty of the typical cruise ship is that it’s kind of like a floating mall, filled with gift shops and retail stores galore. Ships often need many sales associates to staff these stores.
Again, depending on the cruise line and the job, the pay for these gigs may vary. However, BLS data puts the average salary for a retail sales worker at $30,750 annually.
That’s not huge money, but perhaps it's enough for students to get ahead financially during breaks between school years.
Bottom line
Working as a cruise crew member is certainly not for everyone — lodging for staff can be cramped, days can be long, and you might be away from home for weeks at a time.
But for those looking to tap into a new source of income as they travel, it just may be a win-win situation.

British expats have ‘worst cruise experience’ in 20 years after police board ship at Barcelona port
A British expat and her husband had one of their worst cruise experiences in 20 years after the ship they were sailing on was held at Barcelona port and more than 60 passengers with incorrect visas were marched off the boat.
Marina Carter, 69, and Richard Carter, 71, were looking forward to the Mediterranean cruise they booked with their local travel agent, which was due to take them to Barcelona, Corsica, Rome, Corfu, Dubrovnik, Sicily and eventually Venice.
The retired couple, who moved from Britain to Malaga in 2020, set sail on 31 March and were given a cabin aboard the MSC Armonia . They were enjoying the pre-paid drinks package they had purchased, and exploring the activities on the boat when their trip suddenly took a turn for the worse.
Ms Carter told The Independent : “We docked at Barcelona and had the day there, but when we came back there was a big group of people standing by the entrance to the ship all crying. I said to my husband: ‘I don’t like the look of this, I don’t know what’s going on but I don’t like it’.”
The couple heard on the boat’s tannoy there was a problem with immigration, but no further updates were given.
“The boat didn’t embark when it should have done, it did not sail away, but we were told it would in the next few hours, then midnight, then we thought to ourselves this boat is going nowhere is it,” Ms Carter said.
The couple went to dinner but when they returned they found that one of the hallways they would usually access to get back to their cabin was blocked off by a police officer and a speedboat with police officers was circling the cruise ship.
Ms Carter added: “The national police were everywhere. They had what I would call their riot vehicles with them ... they were just everywhere in the pool area ... some of the passengers got put in these cabins along by us with the door shut and they were just guarded 24/7.
“People started getting quite upset as now this boat was not moving. We are starting to miss ports of call. When the boat did finally start to move off we watched them take some passengers off four at a time. We could see as our cabin overlooked the dock.”
Authorities said that 69 Bolivians on the ship lacked valid documents to enter the European Union’s border-free Schengen area. They were marched off and held on another boat for interrogation.
The Spanish government’s office in Barcelona said that 65 of the 69 Bolivians who arrived in the city would be flown out to the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz because they had false visas.
The incorrect entry requirements meant that the Carters, along with more than 1,000 other passengers were stuck for two days and not able to proceed with the cruise.
MSC Cruises said last week the Bolivian passengers’ documentation appeared correct upon boarding in Brazil. They also told The Independent that passengers were given regular updates about the incident and told how to claim compensation.
Spain ’s national police were looking into the possibility of a fake visa scam, Solange Duarte, a Bolivian diplomat in Barcelona, told the Associated Press.
Ms Carter said it was one of the worst cruise experiences they’d had and left them disappointed with the lack of communication from MSC Cruises.
She said: “Everybody was irate because nobody knew what was going on and though we are pretty laid back it was making us irate.”
The couple described having so many police on board as “intimidating”. The cruise vessel eventually set sail after two days, but Corsica, Rome, Corfu and Dubrovnik, were missed out on the trip.
MSC Cruises said in a statement Wednesday the Bolivian “passengers appeared to have proper documentation upon boarding in Brazil ” but Spanish authorities later said the visas were not valid for entry into the Schengen area.
MSC Cruises added: “The guests were given daily written updates in the form of letters that were left in their cabins. Additionally, there were onboard announcements and they were written to detailing the compensation they were going to receive for the disruption to their cruise.”

Cruise ship worker explains vital question that you should always ask crew members
If you get caught out it could be game over for your holiday.
Tom Earnshaw
Cruise ship workers are the holy grail when it comes to the unknown tips and tricks to making your holiday at sea the best it possibly can be.
And one is back with another essential bit of advice that she says is essential to making sure your holiday isn't completely ruined.
Heading on to a cruise ship is the stuff of dreams for many across the world. Who can blame them when you look at the exciting contraptions being built on new $1.2 billion ships .
And when they have luxurious rooms that can cost you a whopping £3,100 a night , you know it's a rather special experience.
Staff on the ships have taken to social media over the years to offer their insider opinions on the trade , as well as reveal what it is really like to work on a floating metal box .
One cruise ship worker of a decade, Lucy Southerton, regularly offers insight into her 10 years on the open seas.
The 29-year-old Brit, from Birmingham, runs the cruisingascrew.com website and has her own Instagram and YouTube channels where thousands follower her for her content.
Nothing is off the cards, with Lucy having previously spoken about why some staff are left absolutely petrified about STIs .
In her latest video, the Brummie explains the critical importance of obeying departure times - with what happens if you don't make it something you really want to avoid .
But there's a way to beat the system. And it's incredibly easy.
"Luckily this does not happen all the time but it definitely happens and when it does happen it is usually first time cruisers," Lucy says.
"They get off in port they go and explore by themselves which of course is part of the fun, it's absolutely fine. But what they don't allow for is the time to get back. So let's say you're off in the Bahamas. The Bahamas is known for having horrendous traffic.
"Exquisite beaches but horrendous traffic. So you make your way to one of the most beautiful beaches. You know you've got to be back at the ship at 4pm so you leave the beach at half past three thinking you've got plenty of time.
"But you've actually got an hour's worth of traffic to get through so this obviously is going to stress you out to no end. I mean, I know it would stress me out especially if it's your first time cruise. Although saying that even if it was my 20th cruise I'd still be stressed out if I was going to miss the ship; it obviously makes things very difficult for the cruise line and it is just an all round mess.
"So when you're on a cruise it is very different to a hotel in that the hotel is going to stay stationary. It's not going to go any where.
"The cruise ship will so you absolutely have to make it a priority to get back to the ship on time. Ask crew members about what the traffic is like in this port if you are thinking about you know getting a taxi to a certain destination because missing the ship could really put a damper on your vacation."
Just last week one TikTok video went viral showing a couple stranded at a port after missing their departure time.
In those situations, if it up to you what you do next with any transport costs to catch up with the vessel your responsibility to finance.

Couple fly through seven countries to catch up cruise ship that left them behind
Share this with
An American couple who flew thousands of miles to rejoin a cruise ship after it abandoned them on a remote African island are now having second thoughts about getting back on board.
Jay Campbell and his wife Jill were among nine passengers abandoned on São Tomé and Príncipe by the Norwegian Dawn cruise ship when they were late to return from a shore excursion on March 27.
But after jet-setting through seven countries in 48 hours to catch up with the ship in Dakar, the couple are beginning to feel disillusioned with the luxury liner.
‘After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly,’ Jill Campbell told USA TODAY .
‘I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and that really the safety and the well-being of the customers should be their first priority, and that should be placed first.’
‘We believe there was a basic duty of care that they’ve forgotten about so it does concern us,’ she added.
The couple, from South Carolina, had been eight days into a 21-day cruise from Cape Town to Barcelona when they embarked on a third-party tour of the island, located around 190 miles west of mainland Africa.
But when they arrived back at the port, where the Norwegian Dawn was still docked, the captain refused to let them board as they had missed the 3pm deadline for re-entry.
The São Tomé and Príncipe Coast Guard then ferried the stranded passengers to the cruise ship, but they were once again denied entry by the captain.
Upon their return to the island, the Campbells encountered a number of additional passengers who had been denied entry and abandoned by the cruise operator, including four elderly passengers, a pregnant woman and a person in a wheelchair.
The group later encountered an 80-year-old woman who had been on a separate tour organised by the cruise line, who had been left behind after becoming hospitalised while suffering a concussion while on the tour.
The Campbells were the only members of the group who had access to credit cards, and say they spent $5000 on accommodation for the group while they planned their next move.
The couple say they were grateful for the hospitality received by the people of São Tomé and Príncipe and had been receiving consular assistance from the US embassy in Angola. They were due to fly to Gambia on Sunday to try to rejoin the cruise.
‘I truly believe sometimes we’re put in certain places for a reason and I believe we were put in this place for the 80-year-old woman that was left alone,’ Campbell told ABC. ‘God forbid, what would have happened to that lady if we were not here.’
A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line told the Mail that the eight remaining guests have been provided authorisation to rejoin the ship in Dakar today.
‘Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjul, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal,’ the spokesperson said.
Norwegian Cruise Line said it was the passengers’ responsibility to ensure they returned to the cruise ship on time and that they had returned the group’s passports to the relevant port authorities before departing.
A previous statement from the operator read: ‘While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel.
‘Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed if the guests were to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call.’

Shuttle bus plows into group near Honolulu pier leaving 1 dead and nearly a dozen injured
HONOLULU ( KNHL /Gray News) - One person is dead, and 11 others were injured Friday after a shuttle bus reportedly lost control near a Honolulu cruise ship terminal.
Authorities said a bus driver dropping off passengers near the terminal appeared to hit the gas instead of the brake and ended up pinning several people against concrete barriers.
Honolulu first responders said a 68-year-old woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but she later died.
Four people in their 50s and 60s were seriously injured with a man in his 70s showing stable vital signs was also taken to the hospital.
Six other adults ranging in age from their 40s to 70s suffered minor injuries and declined to be taken to the hospital.
First responders said they were called to Pier 2 at the ship terminal at about 10:20 a.m.
Honolulu police said the collision happened in a private parking lot.
According to police, the 57-year-old driver was dropping off the passengers when he was told that the vehicle was moving forward. He jumped into the driver’s seat to stop it but pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake.
Witnesses said the chaotic scene unfolded in seconds.

Father of cruise passenger, 20, who jumped overboard ship speaks out for first time since the incident
Levion parker jumped from the cruise ship last week.
Britt Jones
After a man jumped off a cruise ship into the Bahama Ocean, his father has said he believes he is still alive in the sea.
Levion Parker, 20, was last seen jumping off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.
His father Francel Parker told the Daily Sun: “As soon as he went off the side, I prayed over him.
"I was confident the prayers I said over my son were heard. I stand on the word of God. I believe he is alive.”
According to reports, he allegedly jumped off an 18-story Liberty of the Seas boat around 4am in front of his younger brother and dad after getting into an argument with his father.
But Francel explained that he wasn’t actually arguing with his son and that there’s no way his son was trying to take his own life.
He went on to explain that his son is a skilled diver who works on fishing boats .
Another passenger told The Post that Francel had been ‘fussing at [Levion]’ before he jumped overboard.
Bryan Sims told The Post that he had been hanging out with the two brothers in the hot tub early hours in the morning and that later that day he bumped into the family near the elevators.
He said following an argument with his family, Levion 'jumped out the window in front of us all'
Another guest, Deborah Morrison told The Post: “There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately.
“His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”
The man’s father claimed to have thrown over six life rings in the hopes of saving his son before the giant ship could come to a stop 20 minutes later where the Royal Caribbean launched search boats.
However, he was never found, and the Coast Guard called off the search .
Royal Caribbean told the New York Post in a statement at the time of the incident: "The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search.
“Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”
Meanwhile, the Coast Guard said: "The Coast Guard has suspended its search for the 20-year-old pending the development of new information.”
A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told LADbible Group: "Our hearts go out to the family, and we continue to offer them our support and assistance during this difficult time.
"Our policies strictly prohibit guests under the age of 21 from being served alcohol onboard."
