Josh Groban (born February 27, 1981) is an American multi-platinum, award-winning, classical, pop and operatic singer, hailing from Los Angeles, California, U.S.

Having started life with dreams of acting, it wasn’t until the summers of ’97 and ’98 where he attended the Interlochen Center for the Arts Camp in Michigan that singing became his priority. Groban subsequently studied at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, and Cernegie Mellon University, before dropping out of the latter having been offered a recording contract. Aided by singing at the 1999 inauguration of the Governor of California Gray Davis, a duet with Céline Dion, and a popular appearance in “Alley McBeal”, Groban’s early career went from strength to strength

Following a host of benefit shows including “The Andre Agassi Grand Slam Event for Children” with Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Don Henley and Robin Williams, “Muhammed Ali’s Fight Night Foundation”, and “The Family Celebration”, the singer released his self-titled debut album. The November 2001 release highlighted Groban’s voice as a force to be reckoned with, notably on the singles “Gira Con Me Questa Notte” and “Alla Luce Del Sole”. The album subsequently went double-platinum, earned favourable reviews from critics, and spawned the Adult Contemporary Chart No. 1 “To Where You Are”.

The singer’s classical style and enviable vocal range have led him to perform at a number of high profile events including the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway, the Vatican in Rome, Italy, and at the World’s Children’s Day alongside Céline Dion, Nick Carter and Enrique Iglesias. The singer’s sophomore full-length “Closer”, released in November 2003, represented a much more honest and open approach to songwriting and producing than its predecessor. The album ultimately topped the U.S Billboard 200 after debuting at No. 4, aided by the popular singles “You Raise Me Up” and “Remember When It Rained”. Groban built on this success with the release of “Live at the Greek” in 2004, “Awake” in 2006, the Christmas album “Noel” in 2007, “Illuminations” in 2010, and “All That Echoes” in 2013.

Live reviews

What a sensational performance. Setting aside for a moment his immense talent as a singer and pianist he is a truly great performer who clearly appreciates his audience and goes to the nth degree to give back to them and interact making them feel include in the show. Indeed, he returned to the stage to give a second encore in response to crowd’s applause and finished the night with heart felt version of ‘You Raise Me Up’. Everyone on stage with him from the orchestra to guest stars seemed genuinely delighted to be there and a part of the show.

He did a lot of musical numbers from his latest album Stages including songs from Chess, Carousel and Phantom of the Opera. It’s hard to pick favourites from a show that was so consistently strong but if pushed to choose I’d say his production of Le temps des cathédrales from Notre-Dame de Paris was particularly mesmerizing. Another highlight of the evening for me was when he revealed Louise Dearman as a guest performer. I first saw her several years ago staring alongside Rachel Tucker in the West End production of WICKED The Musical. What can say except breath taking. She is such an elegant, powerful and proud performer commanding an immense stage presence. She starts to sing and you just find yourself drawn in, captivated and enchanted. I doubt a single member of the audience could have failed to have been moved by their version of ‘If I loved you’.

Throughout the night the show just seemed to go from strength to strength leaving you at the end of the night feeling uplifted and overjoyed. A truly spectacle evening. I urge any and everyone to go see the show if you get the chance.

At first one would think that Josh Groban is just another opera singer whose voice is slightly bigger than everyone else’s, but if you have ever seen him live, you would bite your tongue for having said anything of the kind.

Along with the majestic orchestra he usually has set up, the combination of instruments and his voice puts you in a state of emotional bliss. Wishing and wanting to be able to belt it out the way he does.

His albums, in no way, hint at his personality. Listening to his music, you would think he is quiet, reserved, deep and intelligent. Of which all could be true, however, at a live show Josh Groban shows another side, a louder, funnier, and charming side that you had no idea even existed. Running in to the crowd, singing happy birthday to those who deserve it and making a joke at every opportunity and mind you, the jokes are actually funny. Strangely enough by time the show ends you are left crying because ‘You Raise Me Up’ and ‘You are Loved’ hit you right in the spot, but crying even harder because you’re laughing at all the random things he keeps saying. Wonderful, his performances are simply wonderful.

I love listening to Josh Groban. At the concert I learned it does not really matter if I hear him through good speakers or live. At least not at this concert.

There was nothing wrong with the concert. He performed, but that was all. Somehow, I did not feel like he engaged the audience. He primarily looked off to his stage right, since I was sitting stage left, that was frustrating.

I don't really fault him, but I thing between the altitude and the tight concert schedule, he was just tired.

The photo shot was very brief. Later I learned other people had several photos taken, I had the standard 3 fast shutter clicks and out. Others had fun poses! I counted, only 80 people, total qualified for pictures, and extra 15 seconds with those who did not get the extras, would not have ruined his or anyone else's night, but would have made ours. I barely got to say hello and thank you.

No encore, he did not even come out for an extra bow.

Again, I love to listen to him. I have most of his albums. I think he is a great person, as I have watched and read interviews. I just wish he was feeling it MORE on Tuesday night.

Josh Groban is the operatic singer, turned multi-platinum pop singer with a really rather gigantic voice and a fanbase to match it. His following is rather extreme, often attending Groban's shows numerous times and following him on tour yet with his warm personality and impeccable sets you can begin to understand why.

His operatic and theatre influences are very apparent this evening as Josh stands at the helm of a complex setup featuring a huge number of instruments including harps, strings and percussion. These all add luxurious layers to the likes of 'False Alarms' which sounds so much more four dimensional than the recorded version. The crowd attempts to sing along but it seems rather futile as Josh hits the high notes of 'February Song' with his power chord vocal. He thanks the audience for their effort none the less and explains that their support it was keeps him touring at the gruelling pace he has become accustomed to. As he takes his final bows following a winning version of 'You Raise Me Up' the applause are rapturous for his class act.

Fantastic concert to a full house! Josh was on point and sang many songs from his new album, Stages, as well as a couple of Christmas favorites from his 2007 Christmas album, Noel. He invited Lena Hall to sing a duet with him twice, as well as showcase a couple of her own songs from her R&B/rock solo album. Josh was charming in his anecdotes and seemed genuinely happy to be there, following a canceled showing in October due to a 103-degree fever. I enjoyed the night immensely as a Groban fan and a showtunes lover!

This was an absolutely phenomenal concert. I saw him in May of 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed that concert, but there is something about maturity of the voice and person that becomes him. He sang songs from Stages, as well as a couple of other "easily recognizable" songs those of us Grobanites will remember. I could have not asked for better seats (third row, center stage) and a better concert. He was personable, humble, and sang beautifully. Thank you for a delightful evening, Josh Groban!

I thought that the show was FANTASTIC, I love anything that he sings. He put on a excellent show the singer before him was also excellent.

As soon as I heard he was going to be at Madison Gardens I asked my family if they would take me to see him because they know much love his singing. I have Parkinson's so they said that they would checked out about the Handicap section, and I have to say all the that helped were fantastic.

It was a fabulous night. My daughter and I are big fans of Josh Groban. Saw the great Comet of 1812 on Broadway three times all from different parts of the theater. We played his songs all the way back to the hotel and then from the hotel back to Brookline Massachusetts. His voice is just heavenly and we both can’t get enough of Josh. Look forward to many years of listening to his songs

Josh Groban among artists who should have regular Las Vegas gig

josh groban tour las vegas

Josh, what's your hurry? You haven't been here in four years. Sit down. Take your shoes off. Stay awhile.

It isn't that we don't appreciate Josh Groban for making the MGM Grand Garden an arena stop on the summer leg of his "Straight to You" tour. It's just that Saturday's concert by the operatic singer, whose CDs enjoy a permanent ride in every soccer mom's SUV, raises questions of why he isn't here more often.

Specifically, when is Groban going to cave in to the temptation of the recurring headliner "residency"? You know, the multiple-shows-per-year deal that Celine Dion, Barry Manilow and Garth Brooks have used to reboot star power on the Strip. The boomer stars jumped right in, from Elton John to Carlos Santana.

But the nightclubs are stealing away the younger customers. Casinos are looking to the sub-boomer generation of headliner, if admittedly for the circular motive -- as Live Nation executive Bob Cayne points out -- of driving business into the nightclubs, which don't really get hopping until about 11 p.m. anyway.

A lot of the stars know they are needed here but expect the casinos to open the counting room. Wynn Las Vegas executive Steve Wynn noted awhile back: "Most entertainers are looking for someone to subsidize (ticket prices). They want to give their fans a deal, but they want a big paycheck."

Still, Groban seems to understand where his future lies. He's even learning how to work a room, old-Vegas style, if that's how you choose to interpret a widely circulated interview with journalist Alan Sculley. On his last big tour, Groban said he fell into "the trap of performing at an audience rather than with them."

He sought to remedy that with a series of solo piano dates in smaller venues. Saturday's tour incorporates some of his newfound looseness with "a lot of open gaps" and interaction.

If not Groban, who will make the jump from occasional concert headliner to multishow Vegas star? Here's our short list, ranked roughly in order of likelihood and focusing on individuals, because bands are a different kind of list (not that the Hard Rock wouldn't love to have Coldplay or Metallica anchor its schedule).

1. Michael Buble -- This one's such a no-brainer, you have to suspect Buble stays an arm's length from Vegas simply because everyone thinks he's so Vegas already. The crooner will buckle down one of these days, when a smaller-theater guarantee can match the paycheck of arena concerts.

2. Beyonce -- She also fill arenas too easily and is too young (29) to settle down. But the multitalented superstar already staked out $1,000-per-ticket ground at Wynn Las Vegas in 2009, scaling down some of the arena theatrics for an "unplugged" approach (preserved on video as "I Am ... Yours").

3. Kenny Chesney -- He fills stadiums, but the country version of Jimmy Buffett also has a demonstrated fondness for the Hard Rock Hotel. The country explosion is guaranteed to land more of its crossover stars a larger presence on the Strip, whether it's Chesney, Brad Paisley or ...

4. Carrie Underwood -- We're still not sure why AEG Live made a futures bet on the uncertain vocal skills of Shania Twain in late 2012, when America's new sweetheart is in grand voice right now. Look at it this way: If a star is impersonated in a Las Vegas tribute show, we're probably ready for the real deal.

5. Alicia Keys -- Casinos should be saying "I Ain't Got You" to the compelling piano songstress. Beyonce is a no-brainer, but hotel executives might need a bit of convincing that Keys has the widest, across-the-board range of appeal needed for multiple bookings.

5. Cee Lo Green -- This one's a wild card, but the cat seems to be here every month anyway for some kind of appearance. If casino operators need encouragement that he is universal enough, look to his judge duties on the TV talent contest "The Voice." And while you're there, look at fellow judges Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera.

6. Justin Timberlake -- He's got other fish to fry, but he does throw his annual Shriners Hospitals benefits on the Strip, and we can bribe him with good golf. And since George Clooney can't sing, who better to become the Sinatra-like guy's guy, hep-cat ambassador of cool for the Strip?

7. Taylor Swift -- At 21, she's way too young to be thinking about settling down. First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the Celine Dion-style working-mom arrangement.

Artist Plus Artist Gets Extremely Great Artist

Josh Groban is an everything type of singer. Well, maybe not everything, but you get my point. He can do romantic ballads and classical songs in several languages. Something must be working because he was the best selling male artist in 2002. So the question on everybody's mind is probably, "Where did this kid come from?"

Groban was born on February 27, 1981 in Los Angeles, California. His mother was an artist and his father was an extremely good pianist. While growing up, he was drawn to opera style music, but had a particular interest towards artist that would extend themselves into different styles of music.

His voice was found at a late age in junior high school and only did choir because all the other kids were doing it. No one must have told him the old saying of if everyone else was jumping off the bridge, would you do it, but it worked out for the best.

He was accepted into the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. Then his career was put on turbo when David Foster asked him to sing at high profile events, when he was only seventeen years old. This even lead him to sing with Celine Dion, when Andrea Bocelli could not make it. Talk about a big break.

An even bigger break came when 143 Records decided to offer Groban a record deal. This lead to several albums that had a mix of rock, pop, and classical music. His first world tour was in 2004.

Josh Groban is a superstar of two worlds: the classical music world and the pop music world. These two worlds will clash when he come to Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and should make for one phenomenal show!

Performer Josh Groban is having a moment

Josh Groban says one of his adolescent dreams was to be middle-aged. No, really. “I couldn’t wait to be 40,” he recalls. “I was an 18-year-old kid who couldn’t wait to have that gravitas. Because my voice was big but I was not. And I loved the roles that were bigger, darker. More aged.”

That does help explain why he was in such a rush back then, leaving theater school at Carnegie Mellon University in his freshman year to embark on a recording and concert career, one that shot him out of the gates like an odds-on favorite at Churchill Downs. With a sumptuous baritone, a yen for show tunes and standards, and a nerdy handsomeness that many a mother could love, he amassed all of the tokens of singing star success: Grammy and Tony nods, multiplatinum albums, sold-out world tours.

The fame and money came a lot faster than did 40. But that finally happened, too — on Feb. 27, 2021, to be exact. Having successfully conquered that chronological goal, the now 41-year-old Josh Groban has been looking for other hurdles befitting a person with a zeal for midlife advancement. Offbeat movie roles. A guest slot in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Freestyle Love Supreme.” And that capstone affirmation of artistic maturity: a lead in a Sondheim musical.

And not just any lead, but one of the most coveted in the canon of the late Stephen Sondheim: Sweeney Todd. On Thursday, Groban will start rehearsals alongside Annaleigh Ashford (as the redoubtable Mrs. Lovett) in the third Broadway revival of “Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street” since the 1979 original that starred Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury. The director is Thomas Kail, who shepherded to Broadway the most influential hit of the past two decades, Miranda’s “Hamilton.”

Groban is materializing in parts both whimsical and tailor-made these days: as a waiter in “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” on Roku; as the Beast opposite H.E.R. in “Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration” on ABC. “Sweeney Todd,” with a score by Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler, is a far bigger deal. It ticks off a lot of boxes for a guy whose more serious ambitions have been fixed toward bigger and darker.

“I’ve thought about it,” Groban says, “ever since I was a camper at Interlochen.” (That’s the highly regarded training center for the arts in Michigan he attended in the 1990s — and where he lost out one summer on playing Sweeney.) “You know, I’m not one of those people who just wants to shoehorn something in just because it’s something I love. So it had to be right.”

In the coming months, audiences at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, where “Sweeney” is set to begin performances on March 26, will judge whether Groban is right for it. The voice being a match for the music is a given. But can this preternaturally genial fellow plausibly play the serial revenge killer of this blood-soaked musical? In the past, Sweeney’s been the Broadway property of brooding types such as Len Cariou and Michael Cerveris, the latter starring in a 2005 revival opposite Patti LuPone, and of course, Johnny Depp in the 2007 film version.

Groban is a performer with a sunnier stage temperament; he’s a pleaser who slips easily into lighthearted assignments, as, for instance, co-host of the Tony Awards (with Sara Bareilles in 2018).

On the question of whether Groban can satisfactorily deliver a Sweeney with gravitas, though, Kail has no doubts. “When Josh plays Sweeney, it’s an exploration of a Sweeney who had a light and how that light gets extinguished,” the director says. “How his Sweeney encounters the world when so much has been taken from him. It’s what he brings to it instinctively, full-throated-ly.”

Six years ago, Groban made his Broadway debut in a head-turning production that suggested an artist who could zig when the world expected him to zag. In “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812,” a musical directed by Rachel Chavkin and adapted by composer Dave Malloy from “War and Peace,” Groban played lumpy, taciturn Pierre in a padded costume and sang the plaintive “Dust and Ashes.” It earned him a Tony nomination and the gratifying feeling of being accepted into an ensemble.

“I was very spoiled by the ‘Great Comet’ experience, because it started so organically,” he says, sitting in the Lunt-Fontanne on the autumn day he was visiting it for the first time. Groban had seen the musical in its original, off-Broadway incarnation, loved it and decided to try to make something happen. “I reached out at the exact same time they reached out, and it was like, ‘Oh, he’s interested. Well, we were just going to ask him anyway.’ And I went out and got, you know, three pints with Dave and Rachel. And we talked about the role and it was like, ‘Let’s workshop it,’ and then it just happened naturally.”

That appetite strikes those who know him as classic Groban. “Frankly, there’s an easier path for Josh Groban, the version of Josh Groban who has a residency in Las Vegas or is smiling in soft focus on an album cover, but that’s not who he is,” says his friend, comedian Alex Edelman. “He makes hard and interesting career decisions. He pushes himself in really challenging directions.”

The path to being Josh Groban at 41 involved some trial, error — and terror. As he describes it, the success was so meteoric that he really wasn’t able to digest it. All the work and pressure of grueling concert tours made him a nervous, joyless wreck. “By the time I was 25, I was having an existential crisis,” he recalls. “I had already released three albums. You know, I sold 20 million records at that point. And I was thinking to myself, ‘Well, maybe that’s it.’ I’m 25 and thinking to myself, ‘It can only go down from here. Maybe I’ll be a veterinarian.’”

What looked from the outside like a carefree climb was in fact a perpetual steppingstone to anxiety. “You’re technically being thrown all these extraordinary experiences, but you’re seeing them through a real narrow lens of appreciation of those experiences, because the pressure is so great,” he says. “So you’re seeing the world through a hotel window, you’re experiencing the cuisine through room service.”

Maturity, to Groban, entailed letting himself off the hook. Instead of giving up, he decided to try finding some balance. “At some point, I stopped thinking about proving it and I just started to enjoy being able to live in it and say, ‘Okay, you’ve done a lot. You’ve accomplished a lot. Now, have fun, enjoy what you’ve done, but also have fun taking risks.’”

It’s a philosophy he’s attempting to employ again, in “Sweeney Todd.” He and Kail talked about the project before the pandemic and then returned to the notion in November 2021, when they organized an informal session in New York to sing through the musical. Two days before it was to occur, Sondheim died. “We were all of course just shellshocked,” Groban says. “We all kind of huddled and said, ‘Do we do this?’”
The answer ultimately had to be yes. “To feel like we get to honor him this way, and to know that this was something he wanted to have happen, is something that we take very, very seriously.”

Groban envisions a Sweeney Todd who was a hard worker and family man who might have had an ordinary life until monstrous injustice twists him into something hideous. “I find it so much scarier,” he says, “when you can follow the man becoming the demon.”

This bigger, darker Broadway opportunity is something Groban is eager to grab. “All I’ll say,” he adds, “is I’m in it for as long as people will come.”

Raiders NFL Draft grades 2024: Las Vegas takes Brock Bowers at No. 13 overall after 6 QBs go in first 12 picks

Here's what las vegas is getting in the former georgia te.

getty-brock-bowers-georgia.jpg

For the 13th straight pick, an offensive player has been chosen. The Las Vegas Raiders continued the historic run by selecting Georgia tight end Brock Bowers.

Bowers is a back-to-back John Mackey Award winner, an honor handed out to college football's most outstanding tight end. He's also the first player in its history to win the award twice. The Georgia product earned that accolade and then some as he proved to be the lifeblood of the Bulldogs offense throughout his tenure. The 21-year-old is a two-time national champion and a three-time All-American and All-SEC player.

Despite missing time due to an ankle injury last year, Bowers still led Georgia in receptions (56), receiving yards (714) and touchdowns (six). Throughout his collegiate career, Bowers was able to lead the Bulldogs in each of those categories. At the NFL level, he is poised to be the latest go-to tight end target that has engulfed the league in recent years.

Here's what the XXX are getting in Bowers, including his scouting report, pro comparison, career accolades, fantasy fit and overall NFL outlook.

NFL Draft grade: C

"He's a heck of a player, but didn't they draft Michael Mayer last year and signed Harrison Bryant this year? They have other needs. Don't really like this pick that much.. It's not like he's a good blocker for their run game. Strange pick with other needs."  -- Pete Prisco

Brock bowers  nfl draft prospect profile.

  • Age as of Week 1:  22 years old
  • Height:  6-foot-3 1/8
  • Weight:  243 pounds

Comparable body type:  Dustin Keller

CBS Sports prospect ranking

Position : No. 1 TE |  Overall : No. 14 |  Rating:  92.40 (All-Pro)

NFL comparison: George Kittle

With a build like George Kittle and an aggressive streak as a blocker and receiver like Kittle, it's easy to make the comparison even if Bowers has a lot of work to do to be as effective as Kittle on mid-range throws. But the gist is that if he get coached as well as Kittle did he can become as good -- and perhaps break out sooner than Kittle did.

Scouting report

Brock Bowers is a wiry strong athlete who is willing to contribute as a run blocker. His lack of ideal mass means he is more valuable as a blocker in space than inline. Bowers has soft hands and great range to go high or low. He has a good feel for pressing defenders at the route before making his cut. Bowers is incredibly effective creating yards after the catch.

  • Career: Only 2-time John Mackey Award winner (given to nation's best TE)
  • Most career rec yds (2,538) and rec TD (26) by TE in SEC history
  • Good top-end speed
  • Does a good job creating separation
  • Builds speed quickly
  • Does not tip off his breaks with his eyes, leans into the defender's body to create spce
  • Great hands and range to make catches outside of his frame
  • Lacks ideal height
  • Lighter frame makes it more difficult to hold up as an inline blocker

Phish fans are famously dedicated. What happens when they enter the Sphere?

L AS VEGAS (AP) — Adele, Mariah Carey and Garth Brooks tower over the Las Vegas Strip, peering out from billboards advertising their various casino residencies. But the 20,000 fans marching toward the glowing Sphere last week were there for a band that many Strip visitors have no idea exists.

Over the past 40 years, legions of dedicated Phish fans have followed the Vermont jam band no matter where it goes. This time, it happened to be Las Vegas, for four nights at the $2.3 billion immersive arena. No two Phish shows are the same, and while the band had played Vegas 26 times before, the Sphere offered a game-changing canvas for its signature light shows.

The fans came in sequined, glittery dresses and tie-dye alike, in button-down shirts and overalls printed with the band's red doughnut logo. Once inside, they were greeted with a LED screen the size of a football field.

Over 68 songs over the four nights, co-creative director Abigail Rosen Holmes would use that expanse to drive fans across bold visual worlds inspired by the four states of matter: solid, liquid, gas and plasma. As Phish jammed, the Sphere's screens became an art show, taking the audience through flowing streams of color and simple dots of light, around an enchanted lake and a field of psychedelic trees, and through a car wash (yes, a car wash).

“It gives me hope,” said Sean Marmora, 31, who traveled from New Jersey. “It’s inspiring that they’re pushing boundaries and doing things that they have never done before.”

Some displays were more abstract — during “Sand” and “Chalkdust Torture,” specks of light danced on screen in time to the music — while others were easier to discern: “Bathtub Gin” featured computer-generated people on floats made of donuts, pineapples and pizza slices in a wave pool. During “Maze,” a narrow line of video blew up into bits across the screen. For “Leaves,” hundreds of digital balloons joined the very real balloons flying up inside the Sphere.

“It was a very different Phish show, so special in its own right,” said Tim Urbashich, 38, from Wisconsin. “This is a whole evolutionary experience in what’s happening. They deserve visual representation of their music.”

Phish's light shows are typically driven by Chris Kuroda, whom fans have nicknamed CK5 — as in, the fifth member of the band.

Kuroda was still heavily involved in the shows at the Sphere, albeit with a stripped-down light setup offsetting the screen. Phish frontman Trey Anastasio said Kuroda played a key role in fighting against the “tyranny of the wall” of visuals.

On Saturday night, the screen lit a digital version of the band ablaze during “Fuego,” eventually subsiding into a calm blue. As the real band jumped into “Golden Age,” Kuroda lit them in his signature soft purple and yellow spotlights.

Holmes says the production team learned to be looser over the course of the Vegas run, refining and adopting subtle changes to make the visuals more responsive to the music.

“This is such a new and different environment, where we started trying to make everything perfect. And then being more comfortable, taking chances and pushing things a bit further,” Holmes said. “I think Chris Kuroda and I were able to reach further and mesh better as the nights went on.”

As much as the Sphere shows will be remembered for the visuals, though, it’s the music that ultimately makes Phish.

No song was repeated, and the band took advantage of the ability to isolate sounds across the room’s 167,000 speaker drivers. Anastasio says he was proud the band could still go in without a plan. Most large visual concert experiences include a click track to know when to hit certain marks. Phish insisted on being able to improvise.

“I felt like if we didn’t have that element, it wouldn’t be a Phish concert,” Anastasio said.

At the end of Sunday night’s show, Anastasio vowed to return to the Sphere. Phish was only the second band to play it after U2 opened it with a 40-show run. Dead and Company are scheduled to play there this summer.

Meanwhile, Phish will release its 16th studio album, “Evolve,” in July, when it will also launch a summer tour.

“As long as the four of us are together and walking this planet, I would like to think that Phish exists and that we can keep playing,” McConnell said of the band's stamina and longevity.

So much of the band’s time together is spent thinking about processes and new approaches, he said.

“So we don’t exactly know where it goes and where it’s going. But I have a good feeling that it’s going to go on for a long time,” he said. “I really hope it does.”

As long as Phish keeps going, so too will its community. Both Marmora and Urbashich were among the dozens of artists selling their Phish-inspired work at the PhanArt show that pops up at the band's stops.

“We’re all trying here to find something special,” Urbashich said. “You have to open up your mind to the simplest things. It’s so out there and abstract. If you don’t give it patience you might not think it’s what you’re looking for.”

What the NFL Draft Will Tell Us About the Las Vegas Raiders

This year's NFL Draft will say a lot about the current state of the Las Vegas Raiders.

  • Author: Ezekiel Trezevant IV

In this story:

The Las Vegas Raiders are days away from one of the most critical NFL Draft they’ve had in recent memory.

It will be the first draft of a new regime, officially marking the first significant milestone in a new era of Raiders football. As they turn the page from the days of Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler, Las Vegas now turns to General Manager Tom Telesco and Coach Antonio Pierce to help take the organization back to the days of being a competitive, playoff-contending team.

The Raiders ended last season, barely missing the playoffs. Most in and around the organization felt they were just a few pieces and a little good luck of being in the playoff mix heading into this season. Telesco got to work as soon as possible, making the additions — and subtractions — necessary to help improve the Raiders’ roster as quickly as possible.

He made one of the most significant free-agency moves by signing defensive lineman Christian Wilkins. Telesco also solidified the Raiders' group of running backs and added to the quarterback room, all while ensuring the Raiders had one of the best defensive lines in the league.

Las Vegas’ roster had more holes that could be filled in the first few weeks of free agency. However, it has another method of adding quality players to its team to help it add to the win column next season: the NFL Draft.

The Raiders have the No.13 pick in the draft and have two central holes on their team that need to be filled, with one area on the roster needing much more help than the other. Las Vegas could use another cornerback on its roster. However, it desperately needs more legitimate offensive linemen if it hopes to be a playoff contender next season.

Currently, the Raiders' roster is pretty thin on the offensive line. The right side of their offensive line needs both starting-caliber offensive linemen and depth behind those players.

For most of the offseason, it has been suggested the Raiders trade up for a quarterback, use the No.13 pick for a quarterback or draft a player to fill one of their two most pressing needs. Telesco will have a tough decision. His decision of who to draft will answer just how close to playoff contention Telesco and the Raiders feel they are.

Suppose the Raiders use the No.13 pick on a quarterback after the season quarterback  Aidan O’Connell had with the lack of many resources and after signing Gardner Minshew II. In that case, it says the Raiders feel they are further from competing for a playoff spot than they’ve admitted so far.

If they draft a cornerback with the 13th-overall pick, the Raiders are going all in on defense. However, if they draft an offensive lineman with that pick, it is a clear sign that Telesco and the Raiders realize just how close they are to competing for a playoff spot and are taking the responsible route to get there.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.

Raiders 2024 NFL Draft takeaways: Antonio Pierce’s culture shines through in this class

If you close your eyes, you can picture Las Vegas Raiders coach Antonio Pierce and general manager Tom Telesco in pre- NFL Draft meetings.

Telesco would name a prospect, and Pierce would then say “dawg” or “not a dawg,” referring to the player’s doggedness and aggression. Maybe even put a dog sticker on certain players’ names on the draft board.

Unlike previous regimes, Pierce has definitely created a culture going back to his promotion to interim coach, and Telesco has embraced it. Pierce wants confident, physical players who take the field with an edge. Wild and fun personalities are welcome, as long as they know when to get serious.

Telesco has had a smooth transition working with all of the Raiders’ incumbent scouts and draft people, and his laid-back, unpretentious personality has been a welcome change from the last regime, people in the building say.

Players have been working out at the facility in record numbers over the past few months, and that enthusiasm has carried over to the front office. The Raiders didn’t reach in the first round of the draft or take someone who is already injured, and that’s cause for celebration in itself.

Telesco and Pierce are pretty pleased with this year’s draft haul.

Las Vegas Raiders NFL Draft picks 2024: Grades, fits and scouting reports

Best value pick

Jackson Powers-Johnson. It’s yet to be determined whether it’ll be at left guard or right guard, but the expectation is he’ll likely start at guard from Day 1. While first-round pick Brock Bowers should also be a Day 1 starter, he’ll be competing with receivers Davante Adams , Jakobi Meyers and Tre Tucker , fellow tight ends Michael Mayer and Harrison Bryant and the running backs for targets in the passing game. And Bowers needs to make significant strides as a blocker to justify keeping him on the field on run plays and asking him to pick up pass-blocking duties.

If Powers-Johnson beats out Cody Whitehair for a starting guard spot, there won’t be a situation where he comes off the field. Most of his success at Oregon came at center, but he has all the tools to contribute as an effective starter right away.

Raiders land steal in Jackson Powers-Johnson, beef up offensive line

Most surprising pick

Bowers. Almost no one highlighted tight end as a position the Raiders would address in the first round. But as Telesco said, they were “zeroed in” when Bowers slid out of the top 10. Although the Raiders were under a different regime when they drafted Mayer with the 35th pick last year, the current regime signed veteran Bryant this offseason and kept three other tight ends on the roster. This was just a shocking pick all around.

Why the Raiders bucked bigger needs and added dynamic tight end Brock Bowers

Biggest question mark

Offensive tackle DJ Glaze . He overcame two ACL injuries in high school and started at both tackle spots at Maryland. Glaze didn’t fare well against some of the top speed rushers he went against, but he has good feet and strong hands and just needs to get stronger and sharpen up his footwork — he tends to overextend himself — to be in the mix for a starting job at right tackle.

Remaining needs

Despite drafting Decamerion Richardson, the Raiders still lack a clear answer for who’ll be their other outside cornerback opposite Jack Jones . Jakorian Bennett , Brandon Facyson and Richardson will have the opportunity to compete for the job, but it’d make sense to add another veteran in free agency. Steven Nelson , Stephon Gilmore and Xavien Howard are among the top options available.

It might also be worth it for the Raiders to explore the veteran offensive tackle market. They’re set to have a competition between Thayer Munford Jr. and Glaze for the starting right tackle job, but there’s nothing wrong with adding some insurance in case of injury or poor performance. Andrus Peat , Chris Hubbard , Mekhi Becton and Charles Leno Jr. are still available and would make sense.

Quarterback could be listed here after the Raiders left the draft without adding a young prospect to the mix, but there isn’t an option available in free agency who would be an upgrade over Gardner Minshew or Aidan O’Connell . Barring a superior quarterback becoming available via trade, the Raiders won’t be able to attempt an upgrade until next year.

Post-draft outlook

The Raiders added two starters in Bowers and Powers-Johnson and a potential swing tackle in Glaze. If Glaze develops, maybe that’s three starters. Richardson is a big-time athlete who needs to work on tackling, among other things.

Pierce talked about how much an elite corner would help the defense, but the Raiders went a different way in the draft, and now it remains to be seen if they’ll add a veteran in free agency or just roll with Jones, Nate Hobbs and Facyson as their top three.

The Raiders didn’t add a quarterback and waited until the sixth round to add a running back, so it’s going to be Minshew handing off to Zamir White and trying to get the ball downfield to Adams and Bowers. Yes, O’Connell will have a chance to beat out Minshew, but based on the two-year, $25 million deal they gave Minshew, the Raiders don’t seem to think that’s going to happen.

And maybe they should ask Tom Brady again if he wants to come out of retirement. He is only 46 and the Raiders are trying to be like the New England Patriots with two play-making tight ends. Ironically, it comes a year after Josh McDaniels and his crew of Bill Belichick disciples were here in Las Vegas.
