Working on a cruise ship

The cruise industry is more than a job, it's a lifestyle bursting with excitement, travel, and endless opportunities. Discover if you have what it takes to apply

With cruise line companies constantly trying to build bigger and better ships, there are always opportunities to work at sea for those who wish to do so. From accommodation, bar work, fitness, entertainment, childcare and retail, these roles can be found aboard every cruise liner.

Why work on a cruise ship?

Working on a cruise ship has many advantages, the most obvious being the opportunity to travel the world. As an onboard member of staff, you'll visit destinations such as the Caribbean, South America, the Mediterranean, Europe, and Asia.

When working on a cruise ship, your accommodation and food expenses are covered and as you're usually onboard for at least six months of the year, you can save a lot of money without having to worry about rent or other living expenses. Additionally, you keep whatever you earn as disposable income.

Another advantage of working on a cruise ship is the opportunity to make connections and build relationships with people from various backgrounds. You'll forge new friendships and make international contacts that will be valuable throughout your career.

Cruise line companies invest time and money into training their employees, which presents excellent opportunities for career progression. Once you're onboard, you'll be encouraged to seek promotion, and your hard work will be recognised.

Are there disadvantages to working on a cruise ship?

While working on a cruise ship seems like an attractive prospect, it's not for everyone. While accommodation and living expenses are taken care of, salaries are often low. You'll also have to work long hours, with little time off. Homesickness can also be a challenge, making it a difficult experience for some.

Living quarters on a cruise ship can be cramped, and you'll have to adapt to living in small spaces with other crew members. It's also hard to achieve a good work-life balance as you're confined to the ship for most of the time, with no option to clock off and go home like those working on land.

What jobs are on offer?

Whether you have experience in hospitality, entertainment, or IT, there's likely a role tailored to you:

  • Accommodation - keep cabins clean and guest areas comfortable. This department suits those with a passion for hospitality . Positions include laundry staff, cleaners, and stewards.
  • Food and beverage - bartenders, waiters, waitresses, and chefs are needed to provide meal services to passengers.
  • Casino - experienced croupiers can find excellent opportunities dealing cards and managing table games.
  • Deck and engine - these technical roles are ideal for individuals with engineering degrees or relevant experience. Strong language skills can be a bonus.
  • Entertainment - singers, dancers, activity hosts, and qualified swimming instructors are needed alongside holiday representatives ,  tourism officers  or  tour managers .
  • Fitness and beauty - qualified professionals in hairdressing, massage therapy, personal training , and other beauty services provide treatments to passengers.
  • IT - keep the ship's IT systems running smoothly. If you have a degree or experience in information technology , this could be your ideal role.
  • Management - lead the way and oversee various onboard operations. Cruise lines offer management positions for individuals with experience or qualifications in business, leisure, travel, or tourism management. Discover how to answer common  management interview questions
  • Medical - ensure the wellbeing of passengers and crew. Doctors ,  nurses  and  paramedics are essential roles on every cruise ship.
  • Children's services - keep young passengers entertained and safe. Qualified nannies and experienced children's entertainers are in high demand.
  • Retail - on-board shops will employ graduates with experience working in a  retail  environment to sell duty-free goods or other onboard merchandise.

Cruise lines offer both seasonal and full-time work, and often promote from within, so starting in an entry-level position can open doors to advancement. Employers value strong administrative, management, customer service, and sales skills.

Which cruise companies can I work for?

Cruise ship jobs are available with a variety of cruise companies, including:

  • Avalon Waterways
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Costa Cruises
  • Crystal Cruises
  • Disney Cruises
  • Fred Olsen Cruise Lines
  • Holland America Line
  • Marella Cruises
  • MSC Cruises
  • Oceania Cruises
  • P&O Cruises
  • Princess Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Saga Cruises
  • Silversea Cruises
  • Titan River Cruises.

What qualifications do I need?

Working on a cruise ship can be highly competitive, so it is important to have relevant qualifications and work experience to make your CV stand out to potential employers. The qualifications required for a particular job in the cruise industry depend on the position and the cruise company you are applying to. Entry requirements can vary between different cruise operators, so it is essential to do your research before applying.

For IT, management, and medical roles, it is likely that you will need to have at least a degree-level education. A degree in an engineering subject can be useful for those interested in working in the engine room. On the other hand, professional qualifications are typically preferred if you want to work as a chef, beauty therapist, personal trainer, or nanny.

When it comes to accommodation, bar and restaurant staff, and entertainers, some previous experience in a similar role is usually required. However, it is possible to get a job on a cruise ship with no qualifications or experience, but you will need to be prepared to start at the bottom and work your way up.

Basic safety training is essential for anyone working on a cruise ship, and it includes personal survival techniques, basic firefighting, and first aid. These training programmes are incorporated in the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) for mariners. In addition, you must also pass and hold a seafarer's medical certificate. Many ports around the world also have various visa requirements that you need to fulfil.

If you are interested in pursuing further education, you can search postgraduate courses that can help you advance your career in the cruise industry.

How do I get a cruise ship job?

As a minimum, you will need to:

  • be 21 years old
  • possess the necessary qualifications for the desired position
  • hold a valid passport
  • maintain a clean criminal record
  • demonstrate English language proficiency.

Before applying for jobs , thoroughly research the cruise line you're interested in. Understanding their offerings and target market is essential. Each company has a unique brand identity, so familiarise yourself with their mission statement.

Many large cruise lines utilise recruitment agencies for hiring. Ensure you understand both the agency's and the cruise line's application procedures.

Most applications involve submitting a CV and cover letter , or completing an online form. Be sure to tailor your application to the specific role, highlighting your relevant experience. This is crucial, as competition can be fierce with hundreds of applicants per position. For entertainment roles, it's important to include a professional photograph. Remember, you're applying to the cruise line, not a particular ship.

There will likely be several application stages and these may include a  video  or  telephone  interview before you receive an invitation to be  interviewed  face-to-face.

Personality is a key factor in selection - applicants should possess a positive and can-do attitude, as cruise lines seek confident, outgoing team players with a passion for exceptional customer service.

Embarking on a Career at Sea: How to Work on a Cruise Ship

5 Star Review

Are you dreaming of a career that allows you to travel the world while working in a unique and exciting environment? Working on a cruise ship might be the perfect fit for you! In this article, we'll delve into what it takes to land a job on a cruise ship, including the qualifications, requirements, and training needed to ensure you're prepared for a maritime adventure.

Getting Started: Qualifications and Training

One of the first questions aspiring cruise ship employees often ask is, "What qualifications do I need?"

While specific qualifications vary depending on the role you're interested in, most positions on a cruise ship don't require a degree. However, some positions may require specialised training or certifications related to safety and maritime operations. These certifications ensure that you can perform your duties effectively and respond to emergencies.

Here are a few key certifications you might need:

  • STCW Certification : The Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers is essential for anyone wishing to work on commercial ships. It covers basic safety training, firefighting, first aid and survival at sea.
  • Medical Certificate : Depending on your job, you may need a valid medical certificate to prove you're fit for the physical demands of working on a ship.
  • Food Safety Certification : If you're working in the ship's galley or a restaurant, you may need food safety training and certification.

What are the basic requirements for working on a cruise ship?

Before you even consider working on a cruise ship, you must ensure that you meet all the requirements. These typically include:

  • Minimum Age : Most cruise lines require applicants to be at least 21 years old, although some positions may accept candidates as young as 18.
  • Valid Passport : You must have a valid passport with a minimum of six months' validity beyond your contract end date.
  • Visa Requirements : Depending on your nationality and the ship's itinerary, you may need specific visas for various countries you'll visit during your contract. Cruise ships can often assist you in how to obtain these.
  • Criminal Background Check : Cruise lines often conduct thorough background checks to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. Any criminal convictions could disqualify you from employment.

How do I get a job on a cruise ship?

  • Apply Directly : Many cruise lines accept online applications through their official websites. Tailor your CV to highlight relevant skills and experiences and be prepared for an interview.
  • Use Recruitment Agencies : There are recruiting agencies specialised in cruise ship employment. They can help match your skills with available positions and guide you through the application process.
  • Attend Job Fairs : Some cruise lines participate in job fairs and recruitment events. Attending these can be an excellent opportunity to network and secure a position.

Factors that Set You Apart

To embark on a career at sea, there are also factors that help set you apart in the recruitment process. While many positions do not require a formal degree, having relevant education or training can be a significant advantage.

For specialised roles, such as medical staff or engineers, specific degrees or certifications are usually required, but a myriad of more general skills are also taken into consideration by the hiring department of cruise ship companies:

  • Language Skills

Cruise ships are floating melting pots of culture, and effective communication is crucial. Most cruise lines require crew members to be fluent in English, as it's the international language of the industry. Depending on the cruise line and itinerary, proficiency in other languages can be a significant advantage, especially if you interact with passengers.

  • Relevant Experience

Having previous experience in your chosen field is often a must. For instance, if you're applying for a position as a bartender, it's beneficial to have bartending experience.

  • Physical Fitness

Working on a cruise ship can be physically demanding. Depending on your role, you may be on your feet for long hours, have to lift heavy objects, or endure challenging weather conditions during sailing. A good level of physical fitness is essential to handle these demands effectively.

  • Customer Service Skills

Customer satisfaction is paramount in the cruise industry. Regardless of your position, you'll interact with passengers regularly. Exceptional customer service skills, including patience, empathy, and problem-solving abilities, are highly valued.

  • Adaptability and Teamwork

Whether you want to work on a cruise ship, a yacht or any other long-haul maritime vessel, life at sea is a unique experience, and it's crucial to be adaptable and a team player. Living and working in a confined space with colleagues from various backgrounds can be challenging, but a positive attitude and a willingness to cooperate are essential for a harmonious work environment.

How Much Can I Earn Working on a Cruise Ship?

As is to be expected, salaries for cruise ship workers vary greatly depending on the position held, but on average, UK-based cruise ship workers earn around £23,000 (€26,759) annually.

At one end of the salary spectrum is the Captain, who can earn £100,000—£145,000 (€116,345—€168,695), while at the lower end of the spectrum are entry level kitchen positions that commonly pay minimum wage or slightly higher.

But it’s important to note that a lot of living expenses are covered when working on a cruise ship — As per Maritime law, adequate food is provided to staff free of charge, and, oftentimes, living quarters are free for the duration of an employee’s contract.

Safety at Sea: Is It Dangerous?

While working on a cruise ship can be an incredible adventure, it's essential to acknowledge that it comes with risks, as with any job involving maritime travel. However, rigorous safety protocols and ongoing training are in place to minimise these risks. By following proper procedures and being prepared, you can contribute to a safe and enjoyable voyage for passengers and crew alike.

In Conclusion: Setting Sail on a Maritime Career

Working on a cruise ship offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore the world while pursuing your career dreams. By understanding the qualifications, requirements, and training necessary for your desired role, you can embark on a rewarding journey at sea.

Whether you're drawn to the excitement of entertainment, the thrill of maritime operations, or the hospitality industry, there's a place for you aboard a cruise ship. So, hoist the anchor, chart your course, and prepare to make waves in the world of maritime jobs!

Cruise ship worker explains the seven must-have gadgets you need to have when you're at sea

Cruise ship worker explains the seven must-have gadgets you need to have when you're at sea

They're items that people 'wish they would have known to bring', says one cruise ship worker.

Tom Earnshaw

Tom Earnshaw

Preparing properly for a holiday means you're far more likely to have a stress-free experience.

And that's no different for a cruise , with one cruise ship worker sharing some essential advice on seven things you should get your hands on before boarding.

Lucy Southerton, who runs the Cruising At Crew YouTube channel, is behind the advice.

After spending a decade working on the ships, the Birmingham native often shares her expertise, tips and tricks when it comes to cruising so that the ordinary person can have as best an experience as possible.

Lucy has previously spoken about the one vital question you should ask crew members . She's also revealed the worries among staff about STIs , but that's a different conversation for another day.

Here are her top tips when it coming to packing for your trip:

Portable power bank

The first thing you need is a portable power bank , according to Lucy.

And she says, it is for crew members and passengers alike, with it needed by pretty much everyone.

She says: "On a cruise, you're obviously going to be out in port and if you don't do an excursion then you're most likely going to be using Google Maps to try and navigate your way around the port.

Lucy giving top advice (YouTube/cruisingascrew)

"Or if you don't buy the internet package when you are on board, when you get off the ship in these ports you're going to want to find a little internet cafe and use the Wi-Fi, so I always recommend taking a portable charger because there's nothing worse than getting halfway through your day and your phone is on 10% battery.

"Even worse if you're using your phone for Google Maps and then it does because you're winging it now. So, if you take a portable charger it just means that you're not going to run in to this issue.

Travel first aid kit

Next up is a travel first aid kit , which you should fill up with specific stuff that is thankfully easily available.

Lucy says: "While in this first aid kit I would take bandages and plasters and you know, everything you find in a traditional first aid kit. I would absolutely take seasick tablets, I would take some Imodium, I would take some painkillers. Anything that you might need because, although the shops on board will always have a supply, they've got you haven't they.

"You're a captive audience so the price is going to be ramped up."

Lucy said a packet of seasickness tablets could be more than triple the high street price. We're talking $10 instead of $3.

Waterproof phone case

For Lucy, she thinks it's really important to pack that waterproof phone case .

The thing with a cruise ship holiday is that you're often surrounded by water; whether that be sitting on the pool or a day on the beach after your ship arrives at a port.

"If you're going to go on a boat trip or an excursion or even if you like to lie by the pool area on a cruise ship because you know that's where everything's going on," Lucy says.

"I had a friend who was on a vacation she was lay by the pool because she liked to people watch and see everything going on. They did the belly flop competition and she wasn't really thinking about where she was in relation to the belly

flop competition, so they did the belly flop competition, my friend was absolutely engrossed in what was going on and didn't realise that her phone was actually in the splash zone.

"Half an hour of belly flop fun had gone on before she realised that her phone was actually soaking wet. So, if you know that you like to position yourself by the pool, maybe you've got the kids and you need to keep an eye on them while they're playing, waterproof phone case will never not be useful."

Noise cancelling headphones

This one relates to noise and more specifically, blocking it out.

Noise cancelling headphones are the essential item here, although how much they're needed 'depends on what cruise ship you are going on', Lucy says.

"Some ships, you just can't get away from [the noise]," she says.

"So, Icon of the Seasons, you're on this huge cruise ship, because they're so large you're able to go to the quiet zone and you can't hear anything that's going on in the pool area."

But the smaller ships are obviously more compact, meaning it's just more difficult to get some R&R without heading back to your cabin.

Lucy says: "A good set of headphones, noise cancelling headphones, is a great idea because it just means that you can plug yourself in and pretend you're on your own and you're in a serene environment."

Gorgeous waters surrounding a cruise ship (Getty Stock Images)

Being prepared is essential here, so make sure you're taking a decent enough backpack with you.

"Even if you're a handbag girl or you don't think you'll need it when you out in port, you do want to go out prepared," Lucy says.

"If I'm talking to the mums or the dads you have to have everything for the kids but if you're going on a couple's holiday then I just want to warn you that when you get off the ship, you are going to want to take sunscreen, a bottle of water. You're going to want to prepare for every eventuality and also you're going to want your hands free to just explore the ports.

"I think that's a lot easier if you have a little backpack that you can chuck everything in."

Universal adapter

Labelling this one as 'one of the best purchases she has ever made', Lucy says it's time to get that universal adapter secured.

"Instead of taking a European adapter, an American adapter, an English adapter, blah blah blah, you can just take one adapter and it will have you sorted for all eventualities," she says.

Lucy said that a lot of cruise ships are 'still a little bit behind' and lack USB ports, meaning this is more important than ever.

Pre-load your gadgets

For Lucy, she said pre-loading your phone or tablet with the apps you need is essential before getting on board.

She said: "If you think you're going to need any apps to help you navigate the port or help you navigate your time on the cruise then please make sure that you've downloaded these before you get on the cruise even if you're going to buy the Wi-Fi package when you are on board the cruise, the Wi-Fi will not be strong enough for you to download stuff you don't want to be running around in port to find Wi-Fi to download an app."

Ten of the best small-ship cruises

Not a fan of mega-ships our cruise expert has picked the best boutique sailings to keep things exclusive and adventurous.

Nassau, Bahamas

T here’s something special about small-ship cruising. You’ll feel a deeper connection to the sea, and there’s a certain pleasure from being docked in chic little ports among the superyachts or anchored in a remote bay far from the crowds. Of course, there won’t be Broadway shows and a choice of restaurants, but simplicity is all part of the appeal. Here are ten of the best small-ship cruises for this year and next.

I'm a cruise ship worker these are SEVEN gadgets you must take on your holiday on board

  • Lucy Southerton from Birmingham has worked on cruises for nearly a decade
  • READ MORE:  I'm a cruise ship worker... here are nine things NOT to do at the buffet

A seasoned cruise ship worker has revealed the seven essential gadgets you need in your bag for a seamless and relaxing trip.

Lucy Southerton, 28, has racked up nine-years of experience working on board cruise ships around the world.

Lucy, from Birmingham , regularly shares her insider knowledge on how to have the best time at sea to her YouTube channel - Cruising as Crew .

Forgetting your essentials while you are in the middle of the ocean can be an absolute nightmare.

However, Lucy has shared her top seven must-haves passengers should ensure they have before setting sail.

1. Portable Charger

On the top of the list of the experienced cruise ship worker's essentials was a portable charger.

Urging both crew members and passengers to remember the handy device, Lucy explained that forgetting the power bank can be a nightmare both on-and-off the ship.

READ MORE:  I'm a cruise ship worker - these are the 3 things crew members HATE passengers doing when coming aboard

There is nothing worse than being in a foreign country and being without a phone and unable to navigate your way around - hence why the cruise ship worker pressed it's importance.

'I always recommend taking a portable charger because there is nothing worse than getting half-way through your day and your phone is on ten percent battery,' she said.

'Then you are like "We still have four more hours in port and now I have no phone."

She added: 'It is actually even worse if you are using your phone for Google Maps and then it dies.'

According to Lucy, this can cause additional issues if you want to use an internet cafe whilst in dock instead of purchasing a wi-fi package.

However, this proves to be impossible if your phone goes flat before you even arrive.

2. Travel Sized First Aid Kit

Making sure you are stocked up on bandages and plasters is always a good idea - however ensuring you have Imodium, pain killers and sea sickness tablets may even save you some money.

Lucy explained that even though there are shops on ships which sell the medications you may need, the prices are astronomically hiked up.

She revealed: 'You are a captive audience so the price is going to be ramped up because they know you can't get it from anywhere else.

'So while you may be able to get a packet of sea sickness pills for $3 at home, you are going to pay $10 on board for the same pack of sea sickness tablets.'

Similarly to her first essential item, the cruise ship employee also advised her fellow crew members to bring a first aid kit onboard so they can avoid the medication centre.

She added: 'Especially if you are on vacation. You do not want to spend your time waiting around in the medical centre unless you really need to.'

3. Waterproof Phone Case

Protecting your phone from theft or damage is a must regardless of whether you are on holiday or not.

However when you are next to pools of playing children and beaches, the potential damage to your phone is more immediate.

To protect your expensive devise, Lucy recommends bringing along a waterproof phone case so that your phone won't break after a day lying by the pool or a boat excursion.

Retelling her friend's tale, Lucy shared: 'I had a friend who was on vacation and she was lying by the pool because she liked to watch and see everything going on.

'They were doing a belly flop competition and she wasn't really thinking about [her phone].'

But after half an hour of pool fun, the friend eventually realised her phone was directly in the splash zone - but by that point it was too late.

4. Noise Cancelling Headphones

Although you may have bought a ticket for a cruise getaway in a bid to relax for a couple of weeks - others onboard may have different plans.

According to the cruise ship worker, even though most cruises are large enough to escape the noise of the pool - others are not.

On smaller voyages you may walk all the way to the quiet zone on the tail end and still be able to hear the hustle and bustle of the pool area.

So if you want to be prepare for 'inescapable' noise, Lucy recommends a 'good' pair of noise-cancelling headphones.

She explained: 'It just means you can plug yourself in and pretend that you are on your own and that you are in a serene environment.'

The cruise ship worker also explained that headphones could be a good solution for parents having to watch their kids by the noisey pool or for bookworms wanting to tune out the thudding of their neighbouring cabin.

5. Lightweight Backpack

Some may be more used to taking a small handbag with them whilst adventuring new cities.

But Lucy is firm in the belief that a small lightweight back-pack will prepare you for any situation - especially for parents.

Sometimes a handbag may not be big enough to tuck away everything you may need whilst off the ship.

So to be prepared to the best of your ability, the cruise ship worker advises taking a backpack - so you can also have free hands.

'You are going to want to take sunscreen a bottle of water you are going to want to be prepared for every eventuality,' she explained.

'You are going to want your hands free to explore the ports.'

6. Universal Adaptor

Dubbing it one of the 'best purchases' she had ever made, Lucy was especially fond of her universal adaptor.

It can be a nightmare when you arrive to a location and realise you do not have the correct plug to charge all your essential gadgets for the trip.

Equally on a cruise it can be unpredictable what plugs they may have, so a universal adaptor won't only save you suitcase space - it will save you a lot of hassle too, according to Lucy.

'Instead of taking European or American adaptors  you can just take one adaptor and it will have you sorted for all eventualities,' she said.

'I have done it before. You pack thinking you know what the plug sockets are going they aren't there and some cruise ship don't have USB ports.

'So a universal adaptor is definitely something I would recommend.'

Ensuring you have installed the right apps for the duration of your journey was must do on Lucy's list.

Although an app isn't a physical gadget, it is an essential piece of technology that could make your holiday a lot easier according to the cruise ship worker.

According to Lucy, you should make sure you have downloading every app you think you may need prior to getting onboard to avoid any possible hassle.

The cruise ship worker of nine years explained that even if you buy a WiFi-package for your time on the ship, downloading any software of documents will be a hassle.

'So any apps you want to download for your cruise whether that's the cruise line's app, google maps or google translate - any apps you may need to you navigate the cruise or time on port - please make sure you download these before you get on the cruise.'

She added: 'You don't want to be running around the port to try and find WiFi to download app trust me I have been there it is just not fun.'

A company is turning former cruise ships into floating hotels — see inside its largest 'floatel'

  • Bridgemans ServicesGroup operates a fleet of former cruise ships turned into hotels.
  • Its "floatels" are designed to house workers during long-term projects.
  • See its largest 652-cabin floatel with a game room and buffet.

Insider Today

Some old and unwanted cruise ships meet their demise at ship-breaking yards , where they are disassembled and sold for scrap.

Other vessels find a more fortunate fate, receiving a second chance to do what they already do best: serve as floating hotels.

Canada-based Bridgemans Services Group buys and charters former cruise ships to turn into "floatels," outfitted with standard cruise amenities like daily housekeeping, buffets, and relaxing lounges.

But the ships aren't designed to transport tourists from one destination to another anymore. Instead, companies turn to Bridgeman when they need to house workers for a long-term project, whether it be the construction of an offshore wind farm in Europe or the shooting of a major film in a remote destination.

Floatels can accommodate workers in remote destinations where hotels might not be an option.

work on cruise ship uk

In more metropolitan areas, Bridgemans says its ships could lessen the stress an inundation of workers might have on the local housing market.

And once they are no longer needed, the vessels depart and "leave no trace behind," the company said.

Over the last decade, Bridgemans has deployed its ships for 15 projects on every continent, Brian Grange, the company's president, told Business Insider.

work on cruise ship uk

Grange said that its deployments — most often for liquified natural gas companies — last for an average of two years.

In the past, it has also provided accommodations for MSC Cruises at its Ocean Cay private island and housing for more than 1,000 workers in the Philippines' on a project for the Manila International Airport during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company's three ships range from 150 to 652 cabins.

The floatel operator acquired its largest ship, the 561-foot-long MV Isabelle X, in 2023.

In its past life, the 35-year-old vessel sailed around the Baltic Sea as one of Estonia-based Tallink Gruipp's cruise ships.

But gone are its days of leisurely cruising. The 35,000 gross-ton ship is now on its first deployment in Howe Sound, just north of Vancouver, where it's housing more than 600 workers who are building Woodfibre LNG's "net zero" LNG export facility.

Isabelle X underwent a six-month retrofit before it was sent to Howe Sound.

work on cruise ship uk

The process included updating the ship's cabins and adding amenities like a game room and an 8,000-square-foot gym.

The latter two are especially important: "We need to make sure we delineate between work and home," Grange told BI. "We have to create a social environment on board these vessels that makes it attractive for workforces around the world."

During their free time, workers can play billiards, relax in the outdoor lounge, or use the ship’s WiFi to catch up on social media.

work on cruise ship uk

The sports lounge has large television screens, while the games lounge has darts, ping pong tables, and air hockey.

The 'quiet lounges' are the go-to space for people who need to unwind after a long work day.

work on cruise ship uk

Or, they could recharge and catch up on the latest shows in their cabins, which all come with desks, storage, and 32-inch televisions.

Like a typical cruise ship, Bridgemans' vessels have buffets with live cooking stations, a dessert bar, and the occasional themed night.

work on cruise ship uk

The ships' chefs tailor their menus to the demographic and dietary restrictions of the workers on board, the company's president told BI.

Residents can expect at least four protein options, plenty of veggies, and handmade bread and desserts.

Unlike most cruise lines, Bridgemans can pre-purchase all the food it needs before deployment.

work on cruise ship uk

Grange says this allows the ships to maintain food quality and consistency in remote locations.

Remember that deployment in the Philippines during COVID-19? He said the ship had packed almost 800 tons of food ahead of the project.

He wouldn’t disclose the cost to rent one of Bridgemans’ floatels.

work on cruise ship uk

But he did note that the cost of a cabin on the Woodfibre LNG project in Howe Sound is comparable to a hotel room in nearby Vancouver, as is the case with most of its projects near major cities.

The company’s most recent acquisition, the 150-cabin Diamond XI, is currently being retrofitted and would be ready for deployment this year.

work on cruise ship uk

According to the company's president, the vessel is small and high-end, likely to be used for sporting events and movie shoots.

It could also be the start of a greater expansion: He hopes to add two or three more vessels to its fleet in the next five years.

"The world has opened up to this as a valued alternative to housing," Grange told BI.

work on cruise ship uk

Who knows, the next time you see a cruise ship off the coast, there's a slim but possible chance it could be housing workers — not vacationers.
