We Tested the Stanley Quencher Against the Yeti Rambler — This Is What We Found

Both are wildly popular, leaving consumers divided. This is where our editors stand.

What We Love About the Stanley Tumbler

What we love about the yeti rambler, the verdict: is stanley or yeti right for you, bonus: the best stanley cup accessories.

Food & Wine / Matt-Taylor Goss

If there’s one thing we can agree on, insulated tumblers have etched their way into society — and into our hands. At this point, always-chilled drinks (now accessible through reusable straws) are paramount in today’s world, whether on the go or while working from home.

Two have emerged as easy favorites: Stanley’s Quencher H2.0 Flowstate Tumbler and Yeti’s Rambler . Both oversized tumblers have insulated stainless steel bases that promise to keep drinks cold or hot for hours on end and come equipped with easy-carry handles and straws. While similar in concept, the two drinkware options have left the brands’ enthusiasts divided, garnering loyalty for one over the other.

So, which popular tumbler-style mug is right for you? We put the Stanley and Yeti models in head-to-head tests, checking in on temperature control, design, and spillage. Read on for our results and bottle accessories for your biggest tumblers and cups.

To determine which cup is superior at maintaining temperature, we filled each one with hot coffee and chilled water, testing the bottles' internal temperature every few hours and up to 24. We also performed a leakage test, tipping the bottles on their sides and noting whether water seeped through their lids or the straw gaps. Finally, we assessed their design, taking into consideration capacities and lid and straw design. Ultimately, the Stanley cup is the best large-capacity option amidst a now-crowded field of big cup styles.

Food & Wine / Matt Taylor-Gross

The Stanley has carved its little (now viral) corner on TikTok, emerging as a cultural staple — a big departure from its humble camping roots. To its loyalists, it’s more than just a vessel to carry drinks in. Rather, it’s a permanent accessory, joining in car rides, airport trips, evening walks, and morning workouts.

The Stanley comes in two sizes, 30 and 40 ounces, giving its larger option a leg up in capacity compared to the Yeti, which maxes out at 35 ounces. While the 40-ounce option is particularly large and can get heavy, it still has a cup holder-friendly base for travel convenience. The double-walled vacuum-insulated base is made of BPA-Free, 90% recycled 18/8 stainless steel, and all pieces are dishwasher-safe.

The Quencher currently comes in up to 15 colors, with trendy choices like Cream, Rose Quartz, and Fog. Its numerous pastel and matte colorways are a big reason it’s so popular. We also love its rotating screw-on lid, which features three variations: a straw opening, an opening to drink without a straw, and a rotating piece that locks into place to fully cover your drink.

During testing, the Stanley outperformed the Yeti by just a few degrees in the hot beverage test. At the start, our thermometer read 166 degrees Fahrenheit. After six hours, the coffee only dropped 30 degrees; by 24 hours, it was still warm at 111 degrees. We also noted no noticeable staining or leftover aroma. When it came time to test how well it retained ice water, the Stanley held its cool temperature for 24 hours (even in 85-degree weather), only dropping by one degree. Of course, conditions and use will affect the container’s temperature. If you live in a warmer climate or are handling your drinkware frequently, your cup will likely warm faster. We also like that the exterior is never too cold to the touch.

The Stanley Caveats

The 14- and 20-ounce sizes do not come with a handle, and the 40-ounce can almost feel too cumbersome or difficult to drink out of if not using the straw. We also noticed its lid and straw didn’t feel as durable as the Yeti.

In addition, the tumbler isn’t quite leakproof, as water spilled from the lid when we flipped it on its side. That said, with its large size, it’s unlikely you’d throw the container in your bag.

While Yeti has been in the tumbler game for a while, this past fall, the brand added a handle to its large tumbler lineup. Known for built-to-last, quality coolers , it’s no surprise that Yeti also makes top-notch insulated drinkware.

The Yeti Rambler comes in 25- and 35-ounce capacities and eight colorways, including their newest limited additions, Cosmic Lilac and Camp Green . Yeti touts its pieces as dishwasher-safe and encourages lids to be placed on the top rack and straws in the utensil basket.

During our heat temperature tests, the Yeti lost heat more quickly than the Stanley, though the coffee still felt pretty warm after a full day, and no trace of aroma or staining was evident in the mug. During our ice water test, similar to the Stanley, it only heated up by a single degree after almost an entire day.

Compared to the Stanley, we preferred the Yeti’s firmer straw, and both the straw and lid felt more durable on the Yeti. In addition, we appreciate its molded-in straw stopper that ensures you won’t lose your straw when traveling. We also appreciate the easy pop-on lid that felt secure, even when tipped over.

The Yeti Caveats

If you’re looking for the largest size in a tumbler, the Yeti’s biggest option only reaches 35 ounces. And while we appreciate the addition of the handle, it’s a bit small and feels uncomfortable for larger hands, especially in the smaller 20-ounce version. Yeti offers versions in 10-, 20-, and 30-ounce capacities without a handle.

However, unlike the universal Stanley lid, you must swap lids when switching from a hot beverage to a cold one that mandates a straw. And while the straw stopper is a nice perk that gatekeeps your straw, it still didn’t stop water from leaking during our leak test. We also found the base to be smaller in diameter than the Stanley, leaving it prone to tip over easily on carpets or rugs. And without a fully leakproof straw, this could create a mess.

We hate to say it, but it comes down to personal preference. With only a slight difference in temperature retention during testing, we don’t feel one cup reigns far superior. If you’re looking for a reputable tumbler to keep your drink’s temperature at bay, both will do a great job.

If you’re looking for a larger option, turn to the Stanley. With a 40-ounce capacity, it holds more liquid than the Yeti. The Yeti is smaller in appearance, but the Stanley's extra-large size seems to be part of the appeal to its loyalists. (And if you're looking for something even bigger, Stanley now carries a 64-ounce tumbler .) If you tend to lean towards pastel colorways, we also recommend the Stanley. If you don’t mind swapping lids to enjoy your favorite beverage, the Yeti offers a smooth drinking experience with its higher-quality straw and straw stopper. We also prefer its easy pop-on, pop-off lid, but again, that comes down to personal preference.

In the end, you can’t go wrong with either option. We’ll continue reaching for both, and we suspect with quality products coming from each brand, we’ll be keeping our eye out for new tumbler innovations from both Yeti and Stanley.

Silicone Sleeve Base

If you tend to slam your Stanley down like us, this silicone sleeve will protect your tabletops and counters from the stainless steel base. It also protects your cup from chipping or denting. The sleeve takes some maneuvering to slip on since it needs to be snug, but once it's on, it doesn't budge. While it comes in various colors, we grabbed on-trend terrazzo. We've found this sleeve to be incredibly durable (it doesn't rip or discolor with regular use). You can also swap it between cups (both 30- and 40-ounce styles), and it can also fit on other kitchen tools like glass spray bottles.

Straw Cover Cap Set

If you are a germaphobe or have very curious pets, you need straw covers for your Stanley to protect it. This set is designed explicitly for Stanley 30- and 40-ounce tumblers. We bought the set with a mini Stanley cup, pink and white flowers, and smiling clouds, but there are styles for every aesthetic. The covers are food-grade silicone, BPA-free, and clean effortlessly. They also fit Owala straws (if your bottle loyalties reside elsewhere).

Stanley Cup Snack Bowl

This Stanley cup snack bowl seamlessly attaches to your 40-ounce Stanley cup with a handle. Snacking and hydrating in tandem has never been easier—we like these durable and food-grade snack trays for bedtime days, movie nights, and late-night study sessions. We've found they are also great for road trips with kids. The plastic construction is built to last and cleans easily with hot, soapy water. We don't recommend the dishwasher (in case it warps).

Water Bottle Pouch

A bag for a cup might seem ridiculous, but hear us out. This water bottle pouch is great when we don't have pockets, like toting it to the gym where a full bag isn't necessary. You can adjust tha bag to attach to your Stanley (or Owala or Yeti) with a velcro strap. It's surprisingly packed with storage space and features two zippered compartments and a front pocket. We fit so much in this little bag, including the largest phone models, keys, headphones, money, and more. You can pop it in the washing machine (just hang it to dry) if it gets stained or needs a refresh. It's also conveniently versatile—switch it to an armband while running to store your valuables.

Both brands offer a warranty should the drinkware falter. Stanley offers a lifetime warranty, while Yeti offers a five-year warranty.

Stanley vs. Yeti: Which Insulated Cup Is Better?

Here's what I think after using both the Stanley cup and Yeti tumbler for over a year.

blue yeti cup and pink stanley cup

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

Since I've had the opportunity to use both of these over a period of time, I can honestly share how these vacuum-insulated stainless steel tumblers stack up against each other.

How we test Stanley and Yeti

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, we test all types of products related to eating and drinking, including the best water bottles , the best insulated water bottles , the best Stanley cup dupes and more.

I've been using the popular 40-ounce Stanley cup for more than a year now and continue to switch between the original and the newer model, known as the Quencher H2.0 Flowstate Tumbler, which won one of our Kitchen Gear Awards for its innovation and high consumer survey results. I've also been using the Yeti tumbler, a.k.a. the Yeti Rambler 35-ounce Straw Mug for about a year.

When we test Stanley cups and water bottles in the Lab, we evaluate how well they retain temperature over 24 hours, how leak-proof they are, how durable they are, how easy they are to use and drink from and how easy they are to clean. We also send a handful home with consumer testers to see how they hold up in real life.

Here's how the Stanley cup and Yeti tumbler compare.

The Stanley cup

Stanley quencher h2.0 flowstate insulated tumbler, 40 oz.

Quencher H2.0 FlowState Insulated Tumbler, 40 oz

The Stanley cup has a tall, slim profile with a tapered base that easily fits into most cupholders. The oversized plastic handle allows you to pass your hand through and get a good, comfortable grip on the cup itself, which feels nice and balanced in the hand. It also has an opaque plastic lid that you can drink out of like a cup or use with the provided straw.

The H2.0 version, which is the version sold now, has a silicone gasket built into the removable inner piece on the lid that help prevents splashing and big leaks; note that it still leaks when knocked on its side and should be held upright. The lid screws on and off the cup easily. All parts are dishwasher safe — just make sure to take apart all of the lid's pieces to get a good clean because mold can develop on the silicone if not cleaned and dried properly.

The 40-ounce size is the one I use, but it also comes in a comparable 30-ounce. You can get a larger 64-ounce size too, but it doesn't have a tapered base and looks more like a jug. The 20-ounce and 14-ounce sizes look similar to the 40-ounce, but they don't have a handle.

The Yeti tumbler

Yeti rambler 35 oz straw mug.

Rambler 35 oz Straw Mug

The Yeti Rambler tumbler with built-in handle comes in three sizes that all look quite similar: 25 ounces, 35 ounces and 42 ounces. They each have tapered bases that fit in traditional cupholders. The 35-ounce version is the one we reach for most often. It feels heavy and durable with a smaller, harder handle than the Stanley.

The Yeti handle feels like it's designed to be held onto versus sliding your hand through and hugging the mug; it's a little small and felt snug around our hands. The tumbler has a clear lid that seals on by pushing on it. It offers one way to drink unless you buy a corresponding MagSlider Lid , which screws onto the cup and helps prevent leaking when closed properly. (In our Lab tests, the lid with straw leaked a little when knocked over, but stopped after 20 seconds.) Yeti also makes a 20-ounce and 30-ounce tumbler that features their Stronghold Lid that screws onto the tumblers for a more secure fit that does still leak a little when turned upside down.

The Yeti tumbler, like the brand's popular Rambler water bottles, have an uncoated stainless steel base and rim that we found helps with the cup's durability and longevity: We've run them through the dishwasher endless times and haven't experienced any chipping of the cup's colored areas like we have on other cups that are completely coated. (The Stanley cup's rim is uncoated but its base is coated. The base has slightly scratched over time.)

Stanley vs. Yeti: Which is better?

When directly compared, the 40-ounce Stanley cup feels lighter and slimmer than the all of the Yeti tumblers with a built-in handle. I think its lid is easier to put on and take off than the Yeti, but more involved to clean. I prefer the larger, softer Stanley cup handle, but can understand how the Yeti's handle can be appealing to people who like holding their cups by the handle versus wrapping their hand around the cup.

When we tested Stanley water bottles and Yeti water bottles side by side, they both offered the similar temperature retention over 24 hours — the Stanley kept water cooler by only one degree than the Yeti.

They're also comparable in terms of price. The 40-ounce Stanley cup costs $40 while the $42-ounce Yeti tumbler costs $45 and the 35-ounce costs $42.

So what's the bottom line? In truth, I think it's hard to suggest that one is better than the other. Both brands make highly durable and well-designed products that last a long time and have performed well in our Lab tests.

Ultimately, the main difference between the two come down to design. Stanley tends to make tumblers and water bottles in more color options and styles than Yeti, but both offer a wide variety to choose from.

Yeti Rambler vs Stanley Tumbler – the choice is clear

Should you get a yeti tumbler, or a stanley tumbler.

Lindsay Parrill

The back-and-forth sways and seemingly random twists of trends in pop culture are fickle and peculiar. While we can always count on the masses to be eagerly chattering about new music and movies , it’s the “stuff” that baffles us. The hot items we all scramble to have in our possession, associating with them things like popularity and status. Sure, there are the big names in merchandise we love to tote around on our wrists or drape over our shoulders, dropping subtle hints of taste and wealth . These are the items that cost thousands for no other reason but their well-stitched, cleverly placed logos. But every once in a while, an obscure, non-luxury object steps into the spotlight that seems to greedily hold the public rapt. In recent years, that item has been – oddly – a cup.

The Stanley Quencher

The yeti rambler.

While we all understand the importance of adequate hydration, this surge of water tumbler devotion has been nothing short of jarring. Fans of popular brands will wait in lines for hours on end, hoping to score yet another for their collection, its only difference being a slightly different hue from the several they already own. It’s an odd obsession, to be sure. And while we could dissect the reasons behind the craze (social media influencers), that’s a story for another day.

Today, we’re looking at two of the most popular brands of to-go tumblers – Stanley and Yeti – and breaking down which of the two is the more deserving of all this mania.

  • Here’s how to crawfish boil the right way (and everything else there is to know about crawfish)
  • A guide to the five mother sauces of classical cuisine and their uses
  • How to make a buttery hollandaise sauce like a professional chef

Arguably the more popular of the two brands, Stanley has developed a brand that’s every bit as much a fashion accessory as it is a tool to hold a beverage. The Stanley Quencher is undoubtedly enjoying its time in the warm rays of TikTok sunshine, but how does it hold up as an actual tumbler? Does it matter, we wonder?

It turns out the Stanley Quencher is actually a pretty great little cup. Available in five sizes, the Quencher has a double-wall, vacuum-insulated stainless steel body that keeps cold drinks cold for up to 11 hours and hot drinks hot for up to seven hours. It also boasts an airtight lid, is dishwasher safe, can be used with or without the included straw, and can be personalized…if that’s your thing. The large handle is also extremely comfortable, and we do appreciate the wide range of colors.

The Yeti Rambler is made from 18/8 dent-resistant, dishwasher-safe stainless steel and keeps beverages cold for hours. We love the ever-so-slightly-more rough-and-tumble design, making the Rambler feel sturdier and less like something to compliment our outfit. Having said that, we do appreciate the many DuraCoat peel-resistant colors that refuse to crack or peel, even after frequent trips to the dishwasher.

While there are fewer sizes than the Stanley Quencher, we love that handles are included in all of the Rambler’s dimensions, not just the more extensive options. We also appreciate the shatter-resistant straw of the Rambler.

The differences between these two tumblers are subtle, to be sure, and both brands make a great product. Cynicism aside, there are actually some big annoyances that come with cheap water tumblers that you just don’t get with these two. Both are sweat-proof, leaving hands completely dry and non-slippery. Both seem to fit smoothly into many sizes of car cup holders; both have comfortable handles and dishwasher-safe parts. These are the best things we can ask for in a water tumbler.

But if we’re after a winner, our pick is the Yeti Rambler. The Rambler is slightly lighter than the Stanley Quencher, yet somehow simultaneously feels more sturdy. And while both brands did a fine job of keeping our beverages icy cold, Yeti did stay colder longer, if only by a hair.

So, while we know that the Stanley Quencher is the more popular choice – at least according to TikTok – we prefer the Yeti Rambler.

If you're known as The City That Never Sleeps, you probably have a few good bars to your name. New York is the ultimate beehive, going strong regardless of the borough or time of day. That makes for a pretty rich NYC bar culture.

Sure, there are trending establishments that draw huge lines—look at you, Double Chicken Please. But there are also excellent dives, tremendous wine bars, and watering holes that make you reexamine the definition of a great cocktail.

No one drinks alcohol because they’re looking forward to a hangover. Most people drink because they enjoy the flavor and maybe want to get a little bit of a buzz on at happy hour. Sadly, even with the best intentions, sometimes we overdo it, forget to drink a few glasses of water and take a few ibuprofens, and end up with a headache so bad it feels like our head is going to explode and a gurgle-filled, upset belly that makes us think that we ate a bowl of lava the night before.

And while having a few too many beverages is a guarantee you’ll end up with at least a little bit of a hangover (especially the older you get), there are ways to reduce those chances. If you’re sipping on alcohol with more congeners, there’s a better chance you’ll have a headache the next day.

You’ve definitely heard of aging beef and curing pork into charcuterie goodness before, but maybe you’re not familiar with another protein that can be aged to texture and flavor perfection: fish. While the aging process for fish is typically much shorter than that of meat (think 24 hours compared to three weeks), letting it rest before cooking or serving it as sushi gives it a more toothsome texture and deeper, richer flavor.

To learn more about how to age fish and why it’s so beneficial, we turned to Ben Steigers, the former executive chef at Boston’s PABU. The restaurant has since closed, but it specialized in traditional izakaya, like seasonal small plates, tempura, house-made tofu, and fresh sushi and sashimi, some of which was made even more delicious by employing aging techniques. If you want to try it for yourself, follow Steigers’ careful instructions on how to age fish at home. The benefits of aging fish

I tried the Stanley cup and Yeti Rambler. How do they compare?

By Carolin Lehmann

Updated on: January 17, 2024 / 1:02 PM EST / Essentials

Stanley cup and Yeti cup

Stanely cups are everywhere. So, maybe you've wondered what differentiates these often-sold-out drink mugs from similar models on the market. Yeti makes the Rambler mug, which looks an awful lot like a Stanley cup , and Rambler mugs are much easier to find in stock.

I tried both the Stanley The Quencher H2.0 FlowState tumbler and Yeti Rambler mug to find out how similar the two really are.

The Stanley cup vs. the Yeti Rambler

The most viral Stanley cup model is the 40-ounce The Quencher H2.0 FlowState tumbler. This truly huge drink mug comes in an array of pleasing pastel and neutral hues. I got the cream-colored one. Yeti doesn't have a 40-ounce mug, so I tried the 35-ounce Rambler mug in the limited-edition color canopy green (now sold out), which deviates from Stanley's more muted tones. Stanley also has a 30-ounce tumbler with a handle for sale, but the 35-ounce size is unique to Yeti.

The price of Yeti's 35-ounce Rambler mug is right in between the price of Stanley's 30- and 40-ounce tumblers, so they run at the same (splurgy) price point. I will say, the quality is there for the price.

The first thing I noticed is the big and comfy handle the Stanley cup has. You need a robust handle to carry around a 40-ounce tumbler, and the 35-ounce Yeti tumbler would also benefit from a bigger, softer handle like the Stanley's. Next comes a question of taste. I like the soft, more muted hues that Stanley cups come in -- but getting your hands on one of those perfectly pastel mugs isn't always easy. The Yeti mugs come in both bright hues and neutrals, offering variety.

The lids on the two mugs also look different. Stanley's lid rotates to offer a straw opening, drink opening or full cover top. Yeti's tumbler only has a straw opening, but the thing is, with a cup this big, I wouldn't want to drink from it without a straw anyway. And I likely wouldn't close the lid to throw it in a backpack, either. But to each their own.

My verdict? If you can get your hands on a Stanley tumbler , I would say do so. I appreciate their soft colors and big handle.

But if you don't feel like dealing with Stanley's stock issues or you want a mug that's in between the sizes of the Stanley handled cups, you can get your hands on a Yeti mug today.

Shop the Yeti and Stanley cups below.

Stanley cups fit in car cup holders despite their large size and have a straw that makes staying hydrated just a little more fun. They've garnered quite a buzz among influencers -- so much so that the Stanley site has a 20-item limit on how many cups you're allowed to order in response to Stanley hoarders and resellers. The viral version of the Stanley cup is the 40-ounce model, likely because drinking two of them almost equals the suggested daily water intake for women, taking the guesswork out of drinking enough water each day.

Top features:

  • Stanley cups come in a rainbow of appealing pastel hues.
  • These cups have a comfortable, large handle.
  • Drinking two of these almost equals the suggested daily water intake for women, making it easy to keep track of.

Here's My Verdict on the Stanley vs. Yeti Tumbler Debate

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links."

As a shopping editor, I like to use and recommend the best products on the market, from pieces as big as U-shaped sectionals and platform bed frames to much smaller goods such as super-soft sheets and air purifiers . This month, I turned my attention to perhaps the Internet's most hotly contested debate: Stanley or Yeti tumblers? Is one better than the other, or are they both virtually the same, enormous insulated cups that keep your beverages cold for hours on end? I spent two weeks using both brand's popular products to settle this debate once and for all.

For this experiment, if you will, I used Stanley's IceFlow Flip Straw tumbler and Yeti's Rambler tumbler . Both come in various sizes, but I went with 30 ounces, which I consider a respectable size for people who don't want to get up once every hour to refill their reusable bottles. Below, you'll find a few things to consider, including the brands's similarities and differences and a few factors that helped me determine which is better.

The Tumblers' Similarities and Differences

Both cups are made of puncture- and rust-resistant stainless steel, which is a good material if you are accident prone and tend to drop things. Full disclosure: because they're so heavy (four pounds when full) and made of metal, they're loud when they hit the floor. They're also both 30 ounces and won't erode in the dishwasher. Both cups can also keep your cold drinks cold for more than seven hours. In fact, Stanley claims that ice can last up to two days in the IceFlow, which is perhaps how the cup earned its name. Lastly, both Yeti and Stanley have recently added an array of funkier, bolder hues to their repertoire of previously dark, simple shades.

As for the differences, there are a few worth noting, starting with the drinking method. The Rambler has a lid with a little hole that can be covered with a sliding magnetic piece to prevents spills, while the IceFlow comes with a flip-up straw that won't spill when it's knocked over—even if it's flipped up. The next major difference, though? The size. Technically, both the Rambler and the IceFlow boast a 30-ounce capacity, but the latter is significantly taller at 9.8 inches (compared to the Rambler's 7.8 inch height). The IceFlow also comes with a convenient handle for easy carrying.

Yeti Rambler Details

I have to admit that I knew I'd like this cup because I have the same one in a smaller size , the 20 ounce. I got it in 2019 and still have and use it every time I go to the office. I bought it because I like to make cold brew at home, work out at the gym, and then enjoy my iced coffee at the office about two hours later. It got the job done. I am definitely not drinking 30 ounces of coffee concentrate, so I used my new Rambler for water and tea.

Stanley IceFlow Details

This was my first Stanley, so I was beyond excited to see what all of the fuss was about. Full disclosure: I was a bit worried about the straw situation because this is where these types of cups tend to grow mold, but I ordered a silicone straw cleaner the same day I ordered the IceFlow for peace of mind.

Handle for easy carrying

Keeps beverages cold for up to 12 hours

No customization options compared to Yeti (where you can add your own color or monogram)

Need to purchase straw cleaner to prevent mold

How the Cups Feel in My Hands

I would not consider my arms particularly strong, so the idea of investing in two cups that weigh a pound and a half when empty was a bit daunting. In terms of getting around, the Stanley tumbler is definitely the better pick because you can carry it by the more narrow base or the handle. Every time I reach for my Yeti, I have to hold it from the thicker top of the cup because it feels a bit shaky when I hold it from the base, especially when it's full and weighs four pounds.

Ease of Cleaning

The Yeti, however, wins the cleaning contest. I am a bit of an anti- dishwasher user , so I wash all of my utensils, dishes, and cookware by hand . All I have to do to clean the Yeti is pull the top off and remove the magnetic lid slider. I thoroughly wash each of the three parts with dish detergent and a silicone sponge. As for the IceFlow, I unscrew the lid, pull out the detachable plastic straw and use the silicone straw cleaner on both the lid and the straw before using the bigger sponge on the cup itself. All in all, it takes about five minutes. The Yeti takes no more than one.

My Final Verdict

This may be a hot take since the iconic Stanley cup seems to have captured America's hearts by way of TikTok, but I stan the Yeti. Personally, I don't love the idea of a straw, so drinking from the hole in the lid feels a bit more comfortable. I also find it easier and less time-consuming to clean, which is another plus. Lastly, I like that it's not such an imposing unit on my desk or nightstand. It's definitely big, but not so big that it's the first thing you see when you look my way. I can also stick it right in my work purse and still squeeze in my wallet, keys, and headphones.

That said, I do love my Stanley and will use it all the time at home. Since it feels a bit too big to lug around with me (I live in New York City and often walk from point A to point B), enjoying it at home seems like the perfect way for me to get some good use out of it.

The Best Tumbler

Our four picks for best tumblers, shown side by side.

By Elissa Sanci

Elissa Sanci is a writer on the discovery team. She has found that clear ice makes carbonated drinks taste better, and citronella candles don’t work.

A good insulated tumbler may be all the encouragement you need to stay adequately hydrated throughout the day.

Vacuum-insulated tumblers keep beverages cold for hours, and you can drink from their spill-reducing lids (through either a sipping port or a straw). These reusable drinking vessels, which have grown in popularity over the past few years, are a great alternative to disposable cups and single-use plastic.

After researching dozens of tumblers and testing 11, we’ve decided that the 24-ounce Simple Modern Classic Tumbler is the best one for most people.

Everything we recommend

yeti travel mug vs stanley

Simple Modern Classic Tumbler (24 ounces)

The best tumbler.

This affordable, leak-resistant tumbler keeps hot and cold drinks at an ideal temperature for hours. And it’s the only one we tested that comes with both a straw lid and a flip-top lid.

Buying Options

yeti travel mug vs stanley

RTIC Everyday Tumbler (20 ounces)

For straw-lid users.

This tumbler kept beverages cold for nine hours (longer than any other vessel we tested). And its straw lid creates a tight seal that prevents most leaks. But it comes in a limited number of colors and sizes, and it has a straw lid only.

yeti travel mug vs stanley

Yeti Rambler Tumbler with MagSlider Lid (20 ounces)

For sipping-port users.

This tumbler has a sloped lip, which makes sipping easy, and the smooth, lid-locking mechanism is easy to operate while you’re driving. However, this vessel leaks more when it’s knocked over, and it doesn’t keep drinks as cold as our other picks. Also, it doesn’t come with a straw lid.

yeti travel mug vs stanley

Stanley The IceFlow Flip Straw Tumbler (20 ounces)

For travelers.

This tumbler has a leakproof lid with a built-in flip straw (which can be tucked away when you’re not using it). It has a contoured body, so it’s simple to hold, and the handle makes it easy to carry around.

May be out of stock

Of all the tumblers we tested, the 24-ounce Simple Modern Classic Tumbler impressed us the most. This stainless steel, double-walled vessel was among the most leak-resistant tumblers we tried. It also kept our drinks as cold as—and, in some instances, colder than—tumblers bearing more-recognizable brand names.

This vessel is the most affordable of our picks, and it’s the only tumbler that comes with two different lids—a straw lid and a flip-top lid (at no additional charge). Also, it comes in dozens of patterns, colors, and designs.

If our top pick is unavailable, and you prefer drinking from a straw, we recommend the 20-ounce RTIC Everyday Tumbler . It kept iced drinks at a colder temperature for a longer period (nine hours) than any other model we tested. And its lid seals tightly enough to prevent it from leaking (unless you turn the tumbler upside down).

However, the Everyday Tumbler has a straw lid only, so that could be a dealbreaker for folks who want a tumbler for both hot and cold beverages. Also, compared with our other picks, this model comes in a limited number of colors and sizes.

If you can’t find our top pick, and you know you’re going to need something with a sipping port, we recommend the 20-ounce Yeti Rambler Tumbler with MagSlider Lid . Its rim has a sloped lip, for easy sipping, and the smooth-operating MagSlider Lid reduces the likelihood of spills when the tumbler is upright. But if you knock it over, this vessel leaks more than our other picks, and it doesn’t keep drinks as cold. Also, it comes with the MagSlider Lid only—if you want to use a straw lid too, you’ll have to buy one.

Much like our other picks that come with straw lids, the 20-ounce, leakproof Stanley The IceFlow Flip Straw Tumbler has a built-in flip straw, for quick beverage access. But unlike the straws on those other picks, the IceFlow’s straw can be tucked away when it isn’t in use. The tumbler also has an easy-to-grip contoured body and a carrying handle built into the lid (rather than jutting from the side), so it fits easily into a backpack’s bottle pocket.

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, how we picked and tested, our pick: simple modern classic tumbler (24 ounces), runner-up (straw lid): rtic everyday tumbler (20 ounces), runner-up (sipping-port lid): yeti rambler tumbler with magslider lid (20 ounces), also great: stanley the iceflow flip straw tumbler (20 ounces), the competition.

Since 2019, I’ve been analyzing, reviewing, and generally obsessing over products here at Wirecutter, where I’ve written about everything from label makers to solar-eclipse-viewing gear . Most pertinently, I’ve written about insulated wine tumblers , and I spent quite a bit of time testing the buzzy Stanley tumbler against 40-ounce dupes that line store shelves. Most insulated tumblers—whether palm-sized or gigantic—are made from the same materials. And they function in similar ways, which gave me a leg up when I started my research for this guide.

A tumbler is a good sidekick for anyone trying to drink more water throughout the day.

Tumblers, insulated water bottles, and travel mugs are, of course, very similar—they all keep drinks cold or hot for long periods of time. Yet there are key differences. Most insulated water bottles are leakproof (thanks to their screw-top lids, which require two hands to open), and they don’t have sipping ports. Travel mugs , typically intended for warm drinks, have sipping ports that seal securely to prevent leaks. Tumblers, geared more toward cold drinks, may also have lids with built-in ports, but they don’t seal as securely as the ones on travel mugs. Tumblers often have a wider mouth, to accommodate ice cubes, and they may include a straw for sipping.

For example, unlike water bottles, which need to be uncapped, tumblers give you immediate access to your beverage. Eliminating the step of unscrewing a cap may seem like a small change, but it makes a drinking vessel far more convenient to use.

Tumblers made with double-wall insulation can keep beverages cold (or hot) for long periods of time—which is handy whether you’re sipping from it on a sunny beach or leaving it on your bedside table overnight. A tumbler can also replace disposable cups at fast-food restaurants or gas stations.

When dropped, stainless steel tumblers won’t shatter (like glass) or crack (like plastic), so they’re good for a variety of places where glassware isn’t appropriate (such as poolside or bedside). They’re also more kid-friendly than standard glass cups or flimsy plastic bottles.

Four picks for best tumblers, shown side by side.

We considered nearly 30 tumblers, from popular as well as lesser-known brands. And we narrowed our list to 12 to test, based on the criteria below:

  • Temperature retention: Double-walled, vacuum-insulated stainless steel tumblers offer the best temperature retention , so we tested only those.
  • Lid design: Most tumblers include either a standard lid with a mouthpiece to cover the sipping port or a lid that has a straw. We preferred standard lids with secure sealing mechanisms and rubber gaskets (to keep the lid in place) and straw lids with a gasket at the straw’s entry point (to prevent leaking). We also tested tumblers with flip-straw lids, in which the straw mouthpiece can be pushed down to create a seal (when it’s not in use).
  • Ease of cleaning: We preferred tumblers that are dishwasher-safe. We also favored lids with removable sliders and gaskets, which allow for deep cleaning in the crevices, where gunk can accumulate.
  • Anti-slip measures: Most tumblers aren’t completely leakproof. The best way to keep all of the liquid inside your tumbler is to prevent it from tipping over. So we looked for tumblers with grippy rubber bottoms, to prevent sliding, but we didn’t disqualify any contenders lacking this feature.
  • Cupholder compatibility: There is no standard cupholder size among automobiles, but we looked for tumblers with slim or tapered bottoms that could fit in most cupholders, including those on gym equipment and strollers.
  • Multiple capacities: We tested tumblers that hold 20 to 24 ounces. Still, some people might want a tumbler that holds more (or less) liquid, so we took into account the variety of sizes each company offers.
  • Handles: Most tumblers with handles are larger-capacity drinking vessels, typically able to hold 30 to 40 ounces of liquid. Because we focused on smaller tumblers, we decided to exclude handled options from our testing.
  • Aesthetics: Tumblers have become an aesthetic statement (thank you, social media!). Because of this, we looked for options that come in a variety of colors and patterns, so they’d have a greater chance of appealing to a wider range of people.

Three tumblers with probes in them to measure the temperature of their content during testing.

To test the tumblers’ ability to keep beverages cold over time, we filled each one with ice water; then we measured the temperature with a smart-sensor thermometer over the span of 10 hours. We did the same test using boiling water, measuring the temperature at hour intervals over five hours.

To assess lid quality, we filled each tumbler with water and affixed its lid in place, sealing the sipping port with the lid’s mouthpiece, where applicable. Then we knocked each one over to see how much, if any, liquid seeped out.

We also took the lids apart, to see how easy it was to clean them; then we ran the tumblers, their lids, and any included straws through several dishwashing cycles, to assess how heat, water, and detergent would affect the separate pieces.

We used the finalists as our everyday tumblers, taking them along with us on errands, on walks, and to the gym to see how they fared out in the world.

Our top pick for best tumbler, the twenty-four ounce Simple Modern Classic Tumbler.

Of all the tumblers we tested, the 24-ounce Simple Modern Classic Tumbler offers the best combination of performance and value.

It’s the cheapest of our picks, and it comes with two lids. This tumbler is among the more affordable options we tested. And it’s our only pick to come with two lids: a flip-top lid with a small sipping port and a straw-only lid.

It does a good job of retaining temperature. This double-walled stainless steel tumbler kept beverages just as cold as two of our other picks, the Yeti Rambler and Stanley’s The IceFlow (but not as cold as the RTIC Everyday Tumbler ). The Simple Modern vessel also kept hot drinks warmer for longer than our other picks.

It doesn’t leak, even when it’s knocked over. Both lids screw into the mouth of the tumbler, creating an airtight seal that keeps liquid from seeping out—even when we knocked the cup on its side. On the flip-top lid, you can press the mouthpiece cover securely into the sipping port to create a leakproof seal. And though the straw lid is only leak-resistant (given the very nature of straws), it has a rubber gasket that seals snugly around the straw.

It’s easy to sip from, regardless of which lid you’re using. The flip-top lid has a sloped mouthpiece, which eliminates splashing and makes drinking from the cup pleasant. The latch creates a strong seal when you press it into place, but you can still pop it open one-handed when you’re on the go. And the straw on the other lid is made of a flexible, soft plastic, so it’s nicer to sip from than harder plastic or metal straws.

It’s compatible with most cupholders. Cupholder sizes vary depending on an automobile’s make and model, so it may not fit in every car’s cupholder. But with its tapered, 2.8-inch base, the Simple Modern tumbler fits into my Subaru’s cupholders, and it also fits into the treadmill cupholders at my gym.

It feels (and looks) nice. This sleek, slim tumbler has a smooth powder coating that’s easy to grip, even with wet hands. And though all of our picks have logos printed or embossed on the cups, the small “S|M” located toward the bottom of this tumbler is the most understated, which some folks may find appealing.

The Simple Modern Classic Tumbler's flip-top and straw lids shown side by side with their rubber gaskets placed in front of them.

It’s easy to clean. The Simple Modern tumbler, the lids, and the plastic straw are all dishwasher-safe. And the flip-top and straw lids both have removable rubber gaskets, which you can pop out to do a deeper cleaning.

Simple Modern offers a robust selection of colors, patterns, and capacity options. The Classic vessel comes in four sizes (16, 20, 24, and 28 ounces) and in dozens of colors and patterns , so you’re bound to find something that matches your style.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Compared with our other picks, the Simple Modern Classic Tumbler is harder to find in brick-and-mortar stores. If you want this vessel in your hands immediately, there are limited options. Simple Modern vessels are stocked only on shelves in Walmart and Target, and if those stores near you are out of stock, you’ll have wait. Our other picks can be found at a wider range of stores—including REI, Bass Pro Shops, and Ace Hardware, in addition to Walmart and Target. So if one retailer doesn’t have the tumbler in stock, you have other options.

Another pick for best tumbler, the twenty ounce RTIC Everyday Tumbler.

If the Simple Modern Classic Tumbler is unavailable, and you know you’d prefer a tumbler with a straw over one with a sipping port, the 20-ounce RTIC Everyday Tumbler might be your best option.

It excels at temperature retention. In our cold-temperature-retention tests, this double-walled, ceramic-lined tumbler outperformed the competition, keeping drinks colder for longer than our other picks.

It has a leak-resistant lid. No straw lid can be completely leakproof, but this quarter-turn lid comes close. Like our top pick’s lid, the Everyday Tumbler’s lid screws into the mouth of the cup, creating a watertight seal that doesn’t leak when you knock the tumbler over. And a rubber gasket holds the plastic straw in place, reducing any splashing.

It’s easy to clean. Both the tumbler and the lid are dishwasher-safe. And the rubber gaskets, which make the lid leak-resistant, come out for a deeper clean.

It fits in most cupholders. The slim Everyday Tumbler tapers toward the bottom (its base measures 2.5 inches), so it’s compatible with most cupholders we encountered.

It feels nice in the hand. The tumbler’s color coating is smooth and doesn’t feel too cold (or hot) to the touch, despite the temperature of the liquid inside. It’s also easy to grip with wet hands, so it’s a trusty poolside companion.

View of the lid on a RTIC Everyday Tumbler, showing the gasket around the hole for the straw.

But it comes with only a straw lid. That’s fine for people who plan to use their tumblers just for cold drinks. In our testing, this model was the best at retaining heat, but if you’d like to enjoy the occasional cup of coffee or hot cocoa, you’ll have to buy a separate slider lid .

The pricing can be confusing. RTIC currently offers the Everyday Tumbler on its website for about $9 cheaper than the price on Amazon —but Amazon’s pricing includes shipping, whereas RTIC’s does not. (RTIC charges around $9 for shipping, unless you meet the $35 free-shipping threshold.) Ultimately, the street price of the tumbler is currently around $29 no matter where you buy it, yet we wish the pricing were more straightforward.

This tumbler comes in fewer colors and capacities than our other picks. The Everyday Tumbler comes in five colors—far fewer than our other picks come in. It’s available in just two sizes—20 ounces and 28 ounces—and RTIC doesn’t sell a separate flip-top lid for the 28-ounce size.

Another pick for best tumbler, the twenty ounce Yeti Rambler Tumbler with MagSlider Lid.

If our top pick is unavailable, and you prefer drinking from the rim of a tumbler over using straw, we recommend the 20-ounce Yeti Rambler Tumbler with MagSlider Lid .

Its lid is a joy to use. The lip of the mouthpiece gently slopes, to eliminate any splashing, and the MagSlider port cover smoothly glides open and closed. So it’s easy to use one-handed, while you’re driving or on the treadmill. The press-in lid creates a seal around the mouth of the tumbler, and that cut some of the leakage when we knocked over the cup, but of all our picks, it did leak the most when this happened.

It’s the most expensive tumbler we recommend. The Rambler currently costs more per ounce of capacity than our other picks, and it includes just one type of lid. If you also would like a straw lid, you’ll have to pay another $10—and that lid doesn’t have a rubber gasket around the straw opening, to keep the straw from sliding around.

The Yeti Rambler has a rugged look, which may appeal to some people. This tumbler has a wider, squatter profile than our other picks.

It insulates well enough. This double-walled stainless steel tumbler didn’t keep beverages cold for as long as the RTIC Everyday Tumbler , but the difference wasn’t huge. Over nine hours, the Everyday Tumbler kept water 2 degrees colder than the Yeti Rambler.

The Yeti Rambler Tumbler's MagSlider lid and gasket placed side by side.

It’s easy to keep clean . Both the tumbler and the lid are dishwasher-safe, and the MagSlider pops off, which makes cleaning out accumulated gunk extremely easy. The lid also has a rubber gasket, which you can pull off for deep cleaning.

It’s available in about a dozen colors and three sizes. Yeti offers seven regular colors, including navy, black, and white, plus a handful of rotating seasonal colors. The Rambler is available in 10-ounce, 20-ounce, and 30-ounce capacities.

The twenty ounce Stanley The IceFlow Flip Straw Tumbler.

Stanley’s The IceFlow Flip Straw Tumbler combines the leakproof qualities of a water bottle, the easy-access straw of a tumbler, and the insulating power of a travel mug.

It’s the only tumbler we recommend that’s truly leakproof. The lid screws into the mouth of the tumbler, and the flip straw folds closed, to create an airtight seal that keeps liquid from seeping out. We tossed this tumbler in a gym tote and purse, and it never leaked and soaked our things.

Its lid has a built-in flip straw. Airplanes, trains, and other modes of public transportation are not known for cleanliness, and you may prefer not to have your tumbler’s straw exposed at all times. The IceFlow tumbler’s straw folds out of sight—and away from germs and dirt—when you’re not using it.

It also has a built-in carrying handle. The lid’s hinged handle makes the Stanley IceFlow tumbler easier to tote around. And, unlike the handle on the other (more famous) Stanley tumbler , this tumbler’s handle is on top (rather than on the body), so it’s more likely to fit into a backpack’s water-bottle pocket.

View of the Stanley’s The IceFlow Flip Straw Tumbler's lid with gasket.

But the lid doesn’t come apart for cleaning. Though the tumbler and lid are both dishwasher-safe, the one-piece lid has crannies where grime and gunk can build up. Deep cleaning this lid is not impossible, but it takes effort, attention to detail, and a straw-cleaning brush (to scrub the interior of the straw).

This tumbler is easier to grip than our other picks, due to its contoured body and smooth-finish powder coating. And its tapered bottom (measuring 2.5 inches) is compatible with most cupholders.

This tumbler matched the cold retention of our other picks—but not of the RTIC . In our testing, the double-walled, stainless steel Stanley vessel kept iced beverages cold for nine hours—the same as the Simple Modern Classic and the Yeti Rambler . It also excels at heat retention, but its built-in straw isn’t suited for warm beverages.

It comes in over 20 colors and five sizes. The colors are all bright and eye-catching; it comes in 20, 30, 40, and 64 ounces, as well as a whopping 96-ounce version.

The 24-ounce Corkcicle Cold Cup has flat, easy-to-grip panels along its sides. But the press-in lid doesn’t create a tight enough seal to prevent leakage when the cup is knocked over. It comes with a hard metal straw, which hurt the palate of my mouth.

The 20-ounce Wetoweto Tumbler , the cheapest of all the tumblers we tested, includes two lids and two straws. However, it was the worst at keeping cold liquids cold.

We thought the 16-ounce Pirani Insulated Stackable Tumbler ’s cheeky, Solo Cup–like design might make it a good choice for folks with limited cabinet space, since these cups stack for storage. But the lid created a weak seal, and it leaked a substantial amount when we knocked the tumbler over.

The 24-ounce Takeya Insulated Straw Tumbler has a flip straw that’s similar in style to the Stanley IceFlow’s . But the Takeya tumbler isn’t dishwasher-safe, and the one-piece lid has too many crevices where dirt and other grime can accumulate. Also, stock is currently very limited, so we’ve reached out to Takeya to confirm whether this model is being updated.

The 20-ounce CamelBak Horizon tumbler excels at keeping contents cold. But when this vessel is knocked on its side, it leaks considerably—the press-in lid doesn’t create a secure seal at the mouth of the tumbler.

Likewise, the 20-ounce Hydro Flask All Around Tumbler did a great job of keeping cold beverages cold, but the mouthpiece allowed too much liquid through in a rush. And though the press-in lid creates a tight seal around the mouth of the tumbler, when the vessel is on its side, liquid seeps out from both ends of the sliding mouthpiece.

The 20-ounce Tervis Traveler also excelled at maintaining beverage temperature. Yet the sliding mouthpiece felt loose and flimsy, and the outer plastic coating was hard to grip, especially with wet hands.

We can't decide what's worse for a morning commute: coffee going cold or going all over your clothes. Any mug with a lid that you can carry from place to place is technically a travel mug, but the best travel mugs keep your iced or hot beverage to temperature, won't leak all over your bag, and are easy to keep clean.

We put a dozen of the best travel mugs to the test, evaluating each for how well it retained temperature, how easy it was to clean, and most importantly, how nice it was to drink from. After more than eight months of testing, the Zojirushi SM-SE Travel Mug stood out as the clear winner, keeping drinks to temperature for hours longer than any other mugs we tested. Our other favorites include a large capacity Yeti Rambler that holds 26 ounces of coffee, tea, or anything else you need to travel with in bulk.

Our top picks for travel mugs

Best overall: Zojirushi SM-SE Travel Mug - See at Amazon The Zojirushi SM-SE Travel Mug keeps both hot and cold drinks at enjoyable temperatures for hours longer than the competition, and its lockable lid ensures it's truly leak-proof.

Best with a carry loop: Hydro Flask Coffee with Flex Sip Lid - See at REI The Hydro Flask Coffee is comfortable to drink from and easy to tote around on your next adventure thanks to its strong rubber carry loop.

Best flip-top: Miir Travel Tumbler - See at Amazon Pair an easy-clean lid with 5 hours of hot and cold temperature retention and you get the solid performance of the Miir Travel Mug.

Best spill-proof: Stanley Classic Trigger Action Travel Mug - See at Amazon The Stanley Classic Trigger Action Travel Mug opens with the press of a button and automatically seals itself shut so you won't have to worry about whether you remembered to close it.

Best large-capacity:  Yeti Rambler Bottle with HotShot Cap - See at Amazon If a single cup of coffee simply won't cut it, the Yeti Rambler 26-oz. Bottle has more than enough room to keep you fueled up, and the HotShot Cap makes it go down easy.

Best overall: Zojirushi SM-SE Travel Mug

yeti travel mug vs stanley

Pros: Best temperature retention by far, lid is easy to clean, leak-proof locking lid, one-handed operation, five-year warranty on the vacuum insulation

Cons: Not dishwasher safe, won't fit large ice cubes, will rattle around in cupholders

It's rare that we at Insider Reviews come across a product that is so head and shoulders above the competition that it's without a doubt the best overall pick; there's almost always a shortcoming or a caveat. But the Zojirushi SM-SE Travel Mug is, hands down, the best travel mug you can buy, and we've got the data to back it up.

According to our test, the Zojirushi kept coffee hot for five hours longer than the next-best mug and kept ice frozen for an hour and a half longer than second place. Les Shu, Insider Reviews senior guides editor who helped me with secondary testing, found that it kept liquids hotter far longer if you don't open the lid as often.

The lid flips open to reveal a sizeable drinking spout that regulates liquid well, whether you're pouring it into a cup or your mouth. When closed, a switch at the base of the lid locks it shut so you can confidently toss it in your bag.

The lid disassembles into two plastic pieces and two rubber gaskets, so you can get into all the nooks and crannies as you clean it. It's a skinny mug too, so you'll want to invest in a good bottle brush. Because it's so skinny, you may have trouble fitting large ice cubes into it. It may also rattle around in your car's cupholder. But we're being nitpicky here.

If you want the best travel mug to keep your coffee hot the longest and provide the best drinking experience, this is your pick. Zojirushi also offers a five-year warranty on the vacuum insulation, so if your mug loses its ability to retain temperature, Zojirushi will replace it.

Best with a carry loop: Hydro Flask Coffee with Flex Sip Lid

yeti travel mug vs stanley

Pros: Rubber carry loop, comfortable to drink from, lid disassembles easily, dishwasher safe, lifetime warranty

Cons: Retained coffee smell, rubber loop may not be durable enough for attaching to packs

As much as I love the Zojirushi mug, it can get annoying to carry it around if you're roaming around bag-free or just don't have anywhere to stow it. The Hydro Flask Coffee helps mitigate this problem with the addition of a sturdy rubber carry loop. While walking around with it, I primarily held onto the loop with one or two fingers.

The Hydro Flask also provided one of the nicest drinking experiences of all the mugs we tested. The lid mechanism is simple, the liquid flows well, and there's no large lid mechanism to get in the way while you're drinking. When closed, the lid reveals a red square so you can quickly see that your mug is sealed. The lid disassembles into three plastic pieces and one rubber gasket.

We did find that the stainless steel retained some coffee smell after repeated use, so you may want to dedicate this mug to one type of beverage.

While the lid system does a good job of keeping it sealed, it does require two hands to open. If you're jostled while the lid is open, you might encounter a small spill. This was a rare occurrence, but drivers and commuters may want to keep this in mind.

This was a tough call in our best travel mug with a carry loop  The Klean Kanteen Insulated TKWide actually beat out the Hydro Flask in both temperature tests, albeit by small margins, and we like the metal carry loop for durability. But the Klean Kanteen lid is difficult to disassemble for proper cleaning, and the metal carry loop is uncomfortable if you're carrying it by hand. The Hydro Flask just offered a nicer drinking experience.

Best flip-top: Miir Travel Tumbler

yeti travel mug vs stanley

Pros: Simple lid is easy to clean, stays leak-proof even after repeated use

Cons: Too large for some cupholders, handwash only, won't keep ice frozen for very long

We disqualified more than one travel mug simply due to their exceedingly complicated lid mechanisms. A lid that's too hard to disassemble and clean will discourage you from washing it properly which can lead to mold growth. Flip-top lids are often one piece and the most simple, so mold has nowhere to hide.

The best flip-top travel mug we tried was the Miir Travel Tumbler. (We did love the S'well Commuter, but it's no longer available for purchase.) It was competitive in both our hot and cold temperature retention tests, despite the thinner construction that makes it easier to fit in cupholders.

The flip-top was is slightly stiff and lies almost flush with the lid, so it's not the easiest to open. However, it preserves the benefit of the flip-top by being a breeze to clean.

Best spill-proof: Stanley Classic Trigger Action Travel Mug

yeti travel mug vs stanley

Pros: Automatically seals when not in use, dishwasher-safe, lifetime warranty

Cons:  Hand may get in the way while drinking, middling temperature retention

Even the most leak-proof mug is going to spill if you knock it over while the lid is open. If you know you're prone to spills or simply have too many important papers on your desk at any given time, do yourself a favor and invest in a mug that's totally klutz-proof.

The Stanley Classic Trigger Action Mug automatically seals when not in use, helping to retain temperature as well as ensure all your coffee stays where it's supposed to. To drink, you simply press and hold down the button on the lid which depresses the stopper in the spout and lets liquid flow. Upon releasing the button, the stopper raises back up to seal the spout.

The Stanley performed admirably in our temperature tests — firmly middle of the pack. The lid mechanism is a bit complicated, with buttons and springs, so you'll want to regularly disassemble it and get into the nooks and crannies with a brush to ensure it doesn't harbor mold, especially around the metal spring. It disassembles into two pieces with a simple twist.

The main disadvantage to this mug is also its main draw — you have to press the button to drink. The button is positioned on the back of the lid, so you may find your own hand gets in the way of drinking, especially if your hand is larger. The button is also why this is one of Les Shu's favorites, who has been using it nonstop since early 2019.

Best large-capacity: Yeti Rambler Bottle with HotShot Cap

yeti travel mug vs stanley

Yeti 26-oz. Rambler Bottle

Yeti hotshot cap.

Pros:  Offered in larger sizes than any other mug we tested, retains heat very well, dishwasher safe, very sturdy build

Cons: Retains cold poorly, HotShot lid sold separately, HotShot lid gives no visual indication that it's open, definitely won't fit in cupholders

The Yeti Rambler Bottle comes in smaller 12-oz. and 18-oz. offerings, but the unique 26-oz. model is what caught our eye for best travel mug testing. Most of the travel mugs we recommend come in multiple sizes, but they all max out at 20 ounces. If you're used to guzzling large amounts of your beverage of choice, and you can't be bothered with a refill, you'll want a travel mug to match your habits.

The Rambler Bottle comes with what Yeti calls its Chug Cap — think classic soda bottle top with a large-handled lid that twists all the way off. It's great for water, iced coffee, and other cold drinks, but if hot beverages are your main priority, you'll want to buy the HotShot Cap which is sold separately.

Senior Guides Editor Les Shu and I were split in our feelings on the HotShot. He appreciates the inner wall and the tight lock that keep spills at bay, while I was disappointed that it gave no visual indication that it was open or closed.

If by some chance, 26 ounces isn't enough coffee to get you going in the morning, Yeti also offers a huge 36-oz. Rambler Bottle .

Temperature retention: The most important factor in our tests is the key element of the best travel mug: does it keep your hot drink hot and your iced drink cold? The only way to know for sure if to test the mugs like we did, but you can also look for words like vacuum sealed and double-layer walls.

Lid type: All lids should be relatively spill-proof, but there are different style choices like those with carry-loops, flips tops, or screw tops. If you want to use your travel mug with one hand, choose a flip-top lid or one that opens with a button. Additionally, if you plan on using a carabiner to clip your bottle to a backpack, look for a carry loop.

Size: One consideration is how much coffee or tea you want to transport and how heavy a mug you're willing to carry. Those going through two or three cups of coffee each morning should go for a 16- or 24-ounce travel mug, but keep in mind that it's bound to be hefty. Additionally, car commuters will benefit from slimmer bottles that are more likely to fit in cupholders.

Our temperature retention test results

yeti travel mug vs stanley

In order to test the best travel mugs, we established several criteria we hoped each of our top picks would meet. Our initial testing period lasted one month, but we are still testing long-term durability in case issues arise.

Temperature retention : To test heat retention, we filled each mug with water heated to 136 degrees Fahrenheit, the optimal temperature for hot beverages according to a study by the University of Texas. We then tested the temperature hourly and noted change. Once the temperature dropped 25 degrees, we deemed the beverage too cold to drink and ended the test. To test cold retention, we filled each mug with 45-degree water straight from the refrigerator. We added three ice cubes and timed how long the ice remained frozen.

Leak test: We filled each travel mug with water and turned it upside down and shook it for a total of 30 seconds. We performed this test once at the beginning of our testing period and again at the end to ensure each mug stayed leak-proof even after repeated use.

Ease of use and cleaning : We wanted to test how easy each mug was to drink from while on the go. We noted how easy each mug was to operate with one hand. We also noted how well the liquid flowed out of each and whether or not they fit in standard car cupholders. We took into account how easy each mug was to clean. Many of these mugs have complex lids that can harbor mold if not properly sanitized. If lids were too complicated, difficult to disassemble or reassemble, or began to show signs of mold even after what we thought was a thorough cleaning, the mug lost major points.

Comparison Review: Stanley 40oz Travel Tumbler vs Yeti Rambler 35oz Mug with Straw Lid

yeti travel mug vs stanley

One of my New Year’s resolutions(/memes) is to drink more water , which is a continuation of last year’s resolution. It’s a goal in progress, but all the travel drinkware I bought in 2022 have made it easier to consume more fluids throughout the day.

Today I want to share a comparison review of the two travel tumblers that I am currently using the most: the Stanley 40oz Quencher Travel Tumbler (also sold here ) and the Yeti Rambler 35oz Mug with Straw Lid .

These two tumblers’ key features are the removable lids (which accommodate straws), sturdy handles, and their larger capacity (which encourage consumption). Read on if you can’t decide which to buy.

yeti travel mug vs stanley

APPEARANCE AND CONSTRUCTION

Both the Yeti Rambler and Stanley Tumbler are constructed from kitchen-grade stainless steel, which is rust-resistant. Both are conveniently dishwasher-safe, but I mostly hand wash mine (with help from a bottle brush ), as I am skeptical that the machine can adequately clean the bottoms of these tall mugs.

yeti travel mug vs stanley

In terms of appearance, the Stanley Adventure Quencher Travel Tumbler is made-for-the-gram and comes in a beautiful rainbow of colorways , while the squatter Yeti tumbler is only available in the brand’s seven standard colorways , which are classic but predictable and thus unexciting.

The 40oz Stanley Adventure Quencher Travel Tumbler weighs nearly 1.5 pounds empty and measures 3-7/8″ in length, 5-13/16″ in width, and 12-1/3″ in height. And the Yeti tumbler measures 5″ wide, and 8-1/3″ in height, and weighs a little over 1.25lbs empty.

The handle on the Stanley Adventure Quencher is on the larger side, and is comfortable to grip, while the one on the Yeti Rambler is noticeably smaller. If you have bigger hands, you might find the wider handle of the Stanley Adventure Quencher easier to hold.

yeti travel mug vs stanley

Because of their plastic straws, neither the Stanley tumbler nor the Yeti rambler with straw lid are suitable for hot drinks (but remove the straw and the tumblers will keep hot drinks warm for several hours), and the manufacturers recommend cold or tepid drinks with these strawed vessels. For the Yeti option, however, you can replace the straw lid with one of the brand’s Magslide Lids , which are compatible with hot beverages.

A few words about their lids, the Yeti 35oz Rambler is threadless and its lid is press-and-fit, while the threaded lid of the Stanley Adventure Quencher screws onto the mug and has a rotating cover with three positions. As neither lid is leakproof, the best uses for these beverageware are for travel (in cars), the gym (even though both mugs are large, they have been designed with tapered bottoms that fit into cupholders), and on your nightstand or desk.

yeti travel mug vs stanley

Lids and straws aside, with their double-walled stainless steel construction, in my experience both tumblers keep hot beverages warm for 2+ hours and cold drinks cold for 5+ hours (actual performance might be better, but I haven’t let my drinks sit out for longer than the time estimated above).

For boba lovers, I’d recommend the YETI Rambler Mug with Straw Lid over the Stanley Quencher Travel Tumbler , as the former has an opening on the lid large enough to accommodate boba straws, while the latter’s lid is just a hair too small for boba straws. (Most boba straws also aren’t nearly long enough to reach the bottom of the Adventure Quencher, which is over 12″ tall.) The longer body of the Stanley tumbler also makes it difficult to suck up toppings, so this tumbler is best for well-blended or low-viscosity liquids.

If you are just looking to consume more water, the Stanley tumbler is a great option, as emptying one gets me most of the way to my aspirational daily quota.

In terms of versatility, however, the YETI rambler is a winner for people who prefer beverages with hearty mix-ins.

The Yeti 35-ounce mug retails for $42, while the 40-ounce Stanley Quencher Tumbler is listed for $40. These prices seem fairly attainable for products that go viral on TikTok, but you are still paying a hefty premium for the Yeti and Stanley name. Lookalikes go for 1/4-1/2 the price of these better-known styles on Amazon , but I feel the after-sales service justify the markup.

You can buy the Stanley 40-oz Travel Tumbler at Amazon , Anthropologie , DICK’S Sporting Goods , eBay , Etsy , Stanley , Target , Urban Outfitters , Walmart , and William Sonoma .

And you can find the Rambler 35-oz Mug with Straw Lid at Amazon , Dick’s Sporting Goods , L.L.Bean , and Yeti (for the time being). Yeti also makes a handle-less 26-oz rambler with straw lid (which I also own) if you are looking for a smaller option.

I have enjoyed my Yeti products, the quality, the durability, the temperature range, & styles.

does the smaller 26 oz rambler with straw also fit boba straws?

Yes it does! When I compare the two straws and they appear to have the same outside diameter. Hope this helps!

Hi! Thank you for the info!! What’s the name of that stanley color? It’s not Alpine, but something else?

Hi Rhianna, the color pictured is “Tidepool” and it was purchased from REI. Hope this helps.

Yeti vs. Stanley: Here's which reusable water bottle comes out on top in 2024

In the water bottle olympics, yeti vs. stanley, one reusable water bottle is the clear winner..

2-split-cbs-sports-black-friday-gift-guide-2023-kopie-7.png

Spring is here and I've got hydration  on my mind. As the weather warms up, making sure you are drinking enough water is more important than ever. That means it's time to step up your reusable water bottle game. With an easy-to-carry bottle that keeps your water chilled, meeting your daily water drinking goals becomes effortless and maybe even enjoyable.

Water bottle brands like Yeti and Hydro Flask have been top sellers ever since VSCO girls and outdoorsy types began touting them on social media. Then, Stanley and a group of hard-driving social media influencers entered the chat, making Stanley's stainless steel FlowState tumbler (complete with pale pastel colors and special edition drops) their water bottle of choice.

I've always been a Yeti water bottle user. I like the ease of slipping my  water bottle  into the side pocket of my bag. These giant Stanley tumblers seem like more of a weightlifting exercise to me than a way to stay hydrated.  Before judging, however, I got my hands on a Stanley Quencher to see what all the fuss is about.

Which hydration option is best for you in 2024? Here's what you need to know.

Yeti Rambler Straw Tumbler vs. Stanley Quencher H2.0 FlowState

While both Yeti and Stanley  make great choices in the trendy stainless steel straw top tumbler arena, there are some key differences between the two.

The Yeti Rambler

yeti-straw-rambler.png

Made from durable 18/8 stainless steel, the Yeti Rambler is dent-resistant and dishwasher safe. The double-wall vacuum insulation keeps your drinks chilled for hours and the shatterproof straw is one of the most durable on the market. Another perk of the Yeti Rambler: all sizes feature a convenient handle on the side. With Stanley, you'll only get a handle on the 30-ounce or larger size tumblers.

Yeti also comes in a variety of peel-resistant DuraCoat colors that won't peel or crack over time, even with frequent dishwashing. We also like that you can personalize your Yeti Rambler (a great option for gifting).

Where it falls short of the Stanley Quencher: the lid is not airtight. That means it's neither leakproof nor suited to keep hot beverages hot. There are also fewer sizes to choose from.

With that said, it's a lighter-weight, more durable tumbler with the same great aesthetic as a Stanley Quencher.

Get the 25-ounce Yeti tumbler for $38 on Amazon or directly  from Yeti.

Top features of the Yeti Rambler:

  • Handles are included on all sizes, not just the larger options.
  • The tumbler is slightly lighter in weight than the Stanley.
  • Yeti offers more vivid, bright color choices.
  • The shatterproof straw is more durable.

The Stanley Quencher H2.0 FlowState

stanley-cups-neon-spring-2024.jpg

A TikTok sensation, the Stanley Quencher is as much a statement piece as a tumbler. So anyone looking for unique colorways that they can coordinate with their outfits will appreciate the frequent limited edition releases and stylish collections that Stanley puts out on the regular.

Style aside, the Stanley Quencher is also a solid tumbler. The double-wall vacuum insulated stainless steel body is paired with an airtight lid that keeps cold drinks cold for up to 11 hours and hot drinks hot for up to seven hours. So if you're looking for something to hold your hot coffee in the mornings, you'll want a Stanley rather than the Yeti.

While there are five sizes to choose from, ranging from 14 to 64 ounces, only the larger sizes (30 ounces and up) come with the ergonomic handle. Given how bulky these tumblers are even at the smaller sizes, that lack of handle can be a nuisance if you're on the go and need to carry this.

Like Yeti, the Stanley Quencher is dishwasher safe. But the straw is a little flimsier compared to the shatterproof Yeti straw so you may want to handwash that.

Overall, the Stanley Quencher boasts a wider range of colors and sizes and the ability to insulate both hot and cold beverages. So if you don't mind the added weight, it's definitely the more versatile tumbler.

Get the 30-ounce Stanley Quencher for $35 on Amazon or directly from Stanley . The 40-ounce Stanley Quencher is $45.

Top features of the Stanley Quencher:

  • It features a leak-proof top that can be used with or without a straw.
  • The tumbler is made for both hot and cold beverages.
  • This tumbler keeps beverages chilled for up to 11 hours, which is longer than Yeti.
  • Like the Yeti Rambler, the Stanley Quencher is personalizable (for an extra fee).

Features that Yeti and Stanley share

Both brands feature a staggered, sweatproof design, meant to fit in many car cup holders. Yeti's smaller size tumblers have handles, and Stanley's do not. Both have mechanisms to prevent straws from getting loose or lost. Both boast dishwasher-safe (top shelf, please) parts, but Yeti's straw is slightly more durable than Stanley's.

  • Both tumblers are constructed from double-walled, high-quality stainless steel.
  • Yet and Stanley tumblers are both dishwasher safe.
  • They keep beverages chilled or warm for at least 8 hours.
  • Both water bottles are shatter proof and resistant to (most) dents.

Our choice?  Both Stanley and Yeti make a great product, but we prefer the smaller sizing with handles that Yeti offers.

Stanley and Yeti: The Battle of the Brands

Stanley vs Yeti | Stanley Quencher vs Yeti Tumbler

Stanley, founded in 1913, has a long-standing reputation for producing durable and reliable products, including the iconic Stanley Cup. Yeti, a relative newcomer founded in 2006, quickly made a name for itself with its high-quality coolers, tumblers, and drinkware, such as the popular Yeti Mug and Yeti Mugs. This head-to-head comparison evaluates the Stanley Adventure Quencher and the Yeti Rambler Tumbler, two of the market’s popular choices in the reusable water bottle and tumbler category.

Both Stanley and Yeti have their own unique selling points. Stanley offers a wider range of sizes and pastel color options, while Yeti is known for its superior-quality straw, straw stopper, and convenient pop-on, pop-off lid. In our quest to determine which brand and product suits you best, an in-depth comparison of the key features will be carried out, with attention to insulation performance, capacity options, and design aesthetics.

Key Features to Compare

When evaluating reusable water bottles and tumblers, three primary factors should be considered:

  • Insulation performance : This is crucial in maintaining your beverage’s temperature, whether hot or cold.
  • Capacity options : Different users have different preferences and needs, so it’s important to consider the available sizes.
  • Design aesthetics : The appearance of the bottle or tumbler can also play a role in consumer choice.

Considering these factors will help you choose the best reusable water bottle or tumbler for your needs.

Following this, an examination of these factors will be conducted, comparing the Stanley Quencher, also known as the Stanley Adventure Quencher, and the Yeti Rambler Tumbler, aiding your decision-making process.

Insulation Performance

Insulation performance is paramount for retaining beverage temperature, with both Stanley and Yeti utilizing double-walled vacuum insulation. This insulation works by forming a vacuum layer between the two walls of the tumbler, which acts as a barrier to heat transfer. This vacuum layer minimizes conduction and convection, the primary modes of heat transfer, thereby allowing the tumbler to maintain the temperature of hot or cold beverages for extended periods of time.

Both Stanley and Yeti tumblers keep your drinks chill for hours, with or without ice.

Both brands demonstrate satisfactory performance in ice retention tests. Stanley tumblers report to maintain cold drinks for up to 7 hours and iced drinks for up to 30 hours, while Yeti tumblers are renowned for their temperature retention capabilities, although no exact duration is specified but reviewers acknowledge their Yeti tumbler held ice easily for a day and a half. So we can call this comparison a draw.

Also worth noting, most people purchase this larger tumbler (the Stanley 30 oz or 40 oz Quencher and the YETI 35 oz Rambler) to stay hydrated, so are using it for daily water intake only.

Capacity Options

Stanley and Yeti provide a range of capacity options to cater to different user preferences and needs. Stanley’s Adventure Quencher H2.0 FlowState tumbler has four sizes, with capacities of 14, 20, 30 and 40 ounces, and the Yeti Rambler Tumbler also has four sizes with capacities of 16, 20, 25 and 25 ounces. Both are designed to keep beverages cold for extended periods.

Capacity Options: STANLEY vs YETI, each have four sizes in this comparable line of tumblers.

Stanley offers a minimum capacity of 14 ounces and they have the largest Quencher with straw at 40 oz, while Yeti’s tumblers start at 16 oz and have a capacity of up to 35 ounces. Depending on your needs and preferences, you can choose the capacity that best suits your lifestyle, whether you need a smaller tumbler for a quick coffee run or a larger one for a long day of hydration.

All of the tumblers we compared for this study will fit in your vehicles cup holder. Because both companies figured out quickly fitting into a cup holder matters!

Design and Aesthetics

Design and aesthetics are integral components of consumer decision-making. In this aspect, Stanley and Yeti offer contrasting options. Stanley is known for its range of pastel colors, giving their products a soft and elegant appearance. On the other hand, Yeti, with its variety of vivid color options, caters to those who prefer a bold and eye-catching aesthetic.

Aside from color choices, the overall design and construction of the products also play a role in the decision-making process. With features such as ergonomic handles, leak-proof lids, and compatibility with car cup holders, both Stanley and Yeti products have been designed with user convenience and functionality in mind.

Stanley Adventure Quencher vs Yeti Rambler Tumbler

A Stanley Adventure Quencher and a Yeti Rambler Tumbler, both keeping beverages cold for hours

With a clear understanding of the key features to compare, we will now probe further into the similarities and differences between the Stanley Adventure Quencher and the Yeti Rambler Tumbler. We will focus on insulation and temperature retention, durability and leak-resistance, and lid and straw design to help you determine which product is the better choice for your needs.

Insulation and Temperature Retention

In terms of insulation performance, both the Stanley Adventure Quencher and the Yeti Rambler Tumbler excel at maintaining the temperature of hot and cold beverages. Both features double-wall vacuum insulation, keeping drinks hot or cold for extended periods.

Both brands also perform well in temperature retention tests. The Stanley Adventure Quencher and the larger Yeti Rambler Tumblers with Straws are most often used for water and hydration. Both offer amazing thermal protection for all types of beverages. Cold drinks with or without ice are remaining cold for 1 1/2 days to 2 days without issue. (But you want to drink it up faster than that).

Durability and Leak-Resistance

Durability and leak-resistance are of utmost importance when choosing a reusable water bottle or tumbler. In this aspect, Yeti appears to have an advantage over Stanley. The lid and straw of the Stanley tumbler do not appear to be as robust as those of the Yeti tumbler, which are constructed of plastic and designed to be shatter-resistant and dishwasher-safe.

While some of the water bottles carried by each company may not be dishwasher safe, both the Stanley Quencher and the Yeti Tumbler series are dishwasher safe.

Editors Note: As far as being leak-resistant, you have to remember the drinkware we are reviewing have straws in the lids, of course they will spill if you knock them over. However, if you change the Yeti to the magna lid, you are more likely to have success as a spill proof tumbler.

Lid and Straw Design

A comparison image of lid and straw design between Stanley and Yeti products, featuring the Stanley vs Yeti branding.

The Stanley Quencher lid and straw are made of soft food-grade silicone and high-quality, durable materials. This ensures that they are safe to use, easy to clean, and reusable. However, it’s worth noting that the tumbler does not feature leakproof capabilities. And our experience seeing several that were well used, the straws had been chewed by users. Replacement straws are available.

In contrast, the Yeti Rambler lid with straw is designed with a durable and long-lasting clear lid and straw. It features a molded-in stopper that ensures your straw remains securely in place. Additionally, all Yeti Rambler Lids are shatter-resistant, dishwasher-safe, and free from BPA.

Editors note : I prefer the lids and straws of the Yeti Tumblers. I like them clear, and I prefer the material they are made out of over the Stanley Quencher lids and straws which remind me of a child's sippy cup lid. So my personal review is Yeti comes out ahead for the most secure and aesthetically pleasing lids and straws.

Handles and Grip

Handle size matters: Reviewers tell us clearly the larger Stanley handle fits better for people with large hands.

The Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate 40 oz tumbler is a robust and reliable choice for hydration needs. It features a secure handle that is larger in size, making it a comfortable fit for people with larger hands, ensuring a firm grip for safe and easy handling.

On the other hand, the Yeti Rambler 35 oz Tumbler , while offering a thinner and more refined design, has a smaller handle. Although it's secure, it can accommodate only 2 to 3 fingers for people with larger hands, making it a bit less comfortable for them to hold. Small hands, no problem!

Stanley IceFlow Flip Straw Tumbler vs Yeti Rambler Water Bottle

Next, we will draw a comparison between the Stanley IceFlow Flip Straw Tumbler and the Yeti Rambler Water Bottle, two products tailored for varying uses and user preferences. We’ll focus on portability, convenience, and cleaning to help you decide which product is the better choice for your specific needs.

First, we need to identify the breadth of each of these models.

What Sizes are the Stanley IceFlow Water Bottles?

Stanley IceFlow Collection of Water bottles with flip Straw plus NEW Aerolight Water bottle with Cap and Carry Lid

The Stanley IceFlow Collection has added a new water bottle with a cap and carry lid. The AeroLight Water Bottle comes in 4 different sizes on Amazon (16, 24, 36, and 50 oz), and it's available in 12+ colors.

The Stanley IceFlow Collection with Flip Top and Straw has been a staple with Stanley. It's available in 5 Sizes and comes in an amazing 30+ colors and patterns.

What Sizes are the Yeti Rambler Water Bottles ?

Yeti has 3 styles of lids for the Rambler Water Bottles. In total 7 different sizes of water bottles

The Yeti Rambler Water Bottles have three different styles of lids for their various sizes of water bottles. From childrens size Yeti Rambler Water Bottle (12 oz with Flip Straw Cap ) to the Half Gallon (64 oz) or Full Gallon (128 oz) full size jugs with Mag Lids (when open lids sticks to the top of the jug), and the Rambler bottle with Chug Lid (like a standard water bottle). All three lids have easy carry handles. Each style has it's benefits depending on your use and needs.

Stanley vs Yeti

Portability and convenience.

Both Stanley and Yeti offer excellent portability and convenience for on-the-go users.

The Stanley IceFlow Flip Straw Tumbler features a built-in flip straw, allowing for effortless sipping with just a press of a button through its straw opening. Additionally, the tumbler is leakproof, offering peace of mind when consuming your beverage. A new lid option just released by Stanley is the Cap and Carry for their AeroLight Water Bottle , also part of the Stanley IceFlow Collection.

The Yeti Rambler Water Bottle , on the other hand, features three different styles of lids, all with carry handles, so you can choose the type of lid that suits your needs best. The flip straw lid is easy for one hand opening, no straws to mess with. The chug lid resembles a water bottle lid, making it easy to hydrate quickly without a straw. The mag lid provides a bottle opening with an easy way to keep you the lid attached to your larger jug hands free.

In terms of compatibility with car cup holders and backpack pockets, both the Stanley IceFlow Flip Straw Tumbler and the Yeti Rambler Water Bottle are suitable for use in the 12, 18, 20, 26, 35, 40 oz sizes. Once you get into the 64 and 96 oz jug sizes they are obviously getting too big for car cup holders and are heavy to carry in a backpack, thus the top handle for easy carrying.

In appropriate sizes, the Stanley IceFlow’s carrying handle is designed for easy transport and is compatible with car cup holders, as is the Yeti Rambler Water Bottle also designed to fit into standard car cup holders and backpack pockets designed to hold water bottles.

Lid and straw design are essential considerations in choosing the right reusable water bottle or tumbler, especially when it comes to keeping your ice water cold. In this area, Stanley and Yeti offer different solutions.

The Stanley IceFlow features a screw top with a flip-up straw and a carrying handle. A new water bottle for Stanley's IceFlow Collection is the AeroLight Water Bottle. The AeroLight also had a screw top lid called a cap and carry lid (without the flip straw).

On the other hand, the Yeti Rambler Water Bottles come with three different styles of lids. The flip straw lid, chug lid and mag lid each suitable for different sizes of their Rambler Water Bottles. Each creating a secure seal to prevent spills and splashes while traveling.

Stanley vs Yeti different lid styles for their Water Bottles.

The Stanley IceFlow’s screw-on lid is designed for ease of use, providing a 100% seal to prevent any spills or leaks and ensure that your drink remains secure.

On the other hand, Yeti’s three styles of lids also create a seal that helps avoid any potential spills and splashes while in transit. The lids offer ease of opening and different solutions depending on your drinking style and needs.

Dishwasher Safety and Cleaning

Dishwasher safety and ease of cleaning are important factors to consider when choosing a reusable water bottle or tumbler.

The Stanley IceFlow Flip Straw Tumbler is not dishwasher-safe, but it can be cleaned manually. On the other hand, the lids and straws of Yeti Rambler Tumblers are dishwasher safe, providing a convenient and easy cleaning solution.

The importance of dishwasher safety and cleaning lies in the ability to safely and effectively clean reusable water bottles and tumblers in a dishwasher.

Although the Stanley IceFlow Flip Straw Tumbler does not offer dishwasher-safe components, its manual cleaning option (with tools like these straw cleaning brushes are an essential in every kitchen ) ensures that the product remains hygienic and well-maintained.

In contrast, the Yeti Rambler Water Bottle offers a dishwasher-safe solution, making it an ideal choice for those who prioritize easy cleaning and maintenance.

Warranty and Customer Support

It is important to consider warranty and customer support while investing in a reusable water bottle or tumbler.

Stanley provides a lifetime warranty, guaranteeing their products to be free from material and workmanship defects at the time of purchase. To submit a warranty claim, customers simply need to visit the Stanley website, select the option that best suits their needs, and complete the required fields. The process is designed to be fast and hassle-free, guaranteeing a positive experience for customers.

Yeti offers a 5-year limited warranty for their products. This warranty does not cover any defects caused by third-party modifications, repairs, or replacement parts. For warranty claims, customers can contact Yeti directly or submit a warranty request form. Upon receipt of the claim, a Warranty Resolution Specialist will respond within 1-2 business days. If approved, Yeti will provide instructions and discuss return procedures with the customer.

Yeti Rambler Tumblers vs Stanley H2.0 Quenchers

In summary, both Stanley and Yeti offer high-quality reusable water bottles and tumblers, each with unique features and benefits.

While Stanley provides a wider range of sizes and pastel color options, Yeti is known for its superior-quality straw and convenient pop-on, pop-off variety of lid styles.

Insulation performance, capacity options, and design aesthetics are the key factors to consider when choosing the perfect reusable water bottle or tumbler.

Ultimately, the decision between Stanley and Yeti will come down to your personal preferences and needs.

By carefully considering the factors discussed in this review, you can make an informed decision and invest in a reusable water bottle or tumbler that will serve you well for years to come.

Stanley vs Yeti Water Bottle Comparison

In outdoor gear discussions, Stanley vs Yeti often takes center stage. These powerhouses have redefined the insulated bottle, merging practicality with modern design. Both Stanley and Yeti have carved out a reputation for reliability and top-tier performance in the market. Let’s dive into a comprehensive comparison of their standout bottles, shedding light on their strengths and differences.

Table of Contents

Introduction to the Brands

To begin with, here’s a short overview of both companies before diving into the direct comparison.

Founded in 1913 by William Stanley Jr., Stanley is a brand with over a century of heritage. By inventing the steel vacuum bottle, Stanley revolutionised how people consumed hot and cold drinks, earning the company a loyal following that has steadily grown. The brand’s name became synonymous with timeless design, rugged construction, and unparalleled thermal insulation.

While Yeti is a relatively new company in the insulated bottle market, it is also one of the most formidable. Since its launch in 2006, Yeti has gained a significant market share due to its high-quality materials, modern design aesthetics, and top-tier insulation technology. Consumers seeking highly functional, stylish, and well-made outdoor gear are increasingly choosing this brand over all others.

Having presented these introductions, I will compare Stanley and Yeti in-depth, analysing these famous brands in several categories. These include insulation, design, durability, price, additional features, size and capacity, and warranty. This comprehensive comparison will help you understand the appeal of these brands and, ultimately, assist you in choosing the right one for your needs.

Available in four sizes and almost two dozen colours, Stanley’s immensely popular IceFlow Bottle is a worthwhile Yeti alternative . This beautifully-designed, well-made product is highly functional but also exceptionally easy to use, thanks to the addition of a few well-thought-out features.

These include an ergonomic, rotating handle and the titular IceFlow straw that is leakproof and allows effortless sipping on the go. Moreover, the model sports phenomenal double-walled insulation that can keep drinks hot, cold, or chilled for a long time. Finally, it comes with a lifetime warranty – something you rarely see in reusable bottles.

  • Sturdier than its rival
  • Easy-to-use straw
  • Ergonomic, rotating handle
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons:

  • Some people may not like the more traditional design
  • Fewer colours & sizes

Yeti Rambler Bottle

Specifications:

  • Colours available: 23
  • Sizes available: 5
  • Warranty: 5 years

One of Yeti’s best-selling products and a member of the famous Rambler line, this bottle is held in high regard by thousands of people worldwide for a good reason. Like its rival, it also features double-walled vacuum insulation that works wonders when it comes to maintaining the temperature of cold and hot drinks.

However, that’s not the only good thing about the Rambler. It is also highly durable, features a minimalistic yet eye-catching design, and is equipped with the company’s proprietary Chug Cap that makes it easy to take a sip without slowing down – ideal for drinking on the go. The Rambler also sports Yeti’s Duracoat Finish which is resistant to cracking, peeling, and fading.

  • Sleek, contemporary design
  • Better colour selection
  • Available in more sizes
  • Duracoat Finish
  • Less durable than its competitor

A Comparative Review

A green and a black Stanley bottles in snowy outdoors

Stanley is nearly legendary in the outdoor gear world for its excellent thermal insulation. As mentioned above, the company has an impressive legacy going back to the early 20th century when its founder came up with the all-steel vacuum bottle and, in that way, revolutionised the vacuum bottle industry.

The brand’s vacuum insulation technology is famed for its ability to maintain the temperature of hot and cold drinks for a long time. For instance, their Classic series promises to keep liquids hot for 40 hours, cold for 35 hours, and iced for astonishing 160 hours.

Although much younger than its rival, Yeti has quickly gained recognition with its superb insulation technology. The company’s most popular series of products – Rambler – incorporates double-walled vacuum insulation for long-lasting warmth or coldness. Still, Yeti generally offers less insulation time than Stanley, although the exact figures depend on the bottle size.

The Stanley bottle featured in this comparison (IceFlow) is not a member of the brand’s famous Classic lineup and, as such, can’t maintain the temperature of drinks for as long as those bottles can. Still, insulation-wise, the model’s performance is remarkable – it will keep your cold drinks cold for 7 hours and hot drinks for 12 hours.

The Yeti Rambler Bottle incorporates the same insulation technology and performs similarly in temperature maintenance. However, an important thing to note here is that the model’s Chug Cap is not meant to be used with hot drinks. Remove the spout and drink the hot beverage straight from the bottle if you want to use your Rambler for coffee or tea.

In a market flooded with options, aesthetic appeal is often as essential as functionality – it’s as simple as that. Stanley bottles typically sport a vintage design with a timeless, rugged charm. The “Hammertone” finish featured on some of Stanley’s bottles is instantly recognisable. For those who prefer a more modern look, this design may seem dated, even though it may appeal to those with a taste for nostalgia.

The design philosophy of Yeti, on the other hand, is a contemporary one. The brand’s bottles showcase a range of vibrant colours, minimalistic aesthetics, and clean lines. In addition to their sleek appearance, Yeti bottles also have expanded mouth openings (easy drinking), making them popular with younger people.

Stanley’s IceFlow Bottle is a rare example of the company trying to match its competitors’ offerings colour-wise. As shown in the specifications above, the model is available in 22 different colours, ranging from simple white (“Polar”) to vibrant orange (“Tiger Lilly”). It’s a lightweight, well-designed piece of drinkware that can be as unnoticeable or eye-catching as you want, depending on your chosen colour.

Still, Yeti is a clear winner in this category. Their Rambler bottle is available in many vibrant colours while still sporting the clean, minimalistic design the brand is well-known for. An important thing to mention here is that the colour can significantly impact the product’s final price: the standard black variant will cost you about $40. At the same time, some of the more vibrant options can elevate the bottle’s price to a whopping $90.

Due to harsh outdoor conditions, insulated bottles must be durable. Both Stanley and Yeti make their bottles virtually indestructible by using high-quality stainless steel to construct them.

It is well known that Stanley bottles are durable and can withstand rough handling and even accidental drops due to their robust construction – the models from their Classic series feature 18/8 stainless steel bodies that ensure longevity and prevent rust.

Yeti’s bottles are just as sturdy since they feature similarly durable materials, capable of resisting dings and dents. In addition, the exterior of a Yeti bottle always remains dry due to its “No Sweat” design, which reduces the chances of it falling or slipping.

In a similar vein, when exploring Hydrapeak vs Yeti in terms of durability, consumers often find themselves weighing the merits of Hydrapeak’s premium materials against Yeti’s renowned ruggedness. Both brands have established themselves as reliable choices for outdoor enthusiasts and everyday users alike, each offering a unique blend of durability and design that appeals to various audiences.

The Stanley bottle featured in this comparative review is exceptionally durable due to its 18/8 stainless steel construction. Moreover, the same goes for its plastic parts – the model’s straw is nothing like the ones found on cheap reusable bottles made by no-name brands. The IceFlow Bottle is a capable, sturdy piece of drinkware whose Lifetime Warranty proves it’s a worthwhile investment that can serve you for years.

While not as rugged as its rival, Yeti Rambler Bottle is still very much a durable and dependable product. The model was made to withstand the most challenging conditions – hence the 18/8 stainless steel construction also found in its competitor. An especially praiseworthy feature is the presence of the Duracoat Finish, whose job is to prevent the effect of daily use on the bottle’s exterior (protection against peeling and fading).

In the broader context of drinkware durability, the Stanley vs Hydro Flask debate emerges as another intriguing comparison. While Stanley’s ruggedness is evident in its battle against Yeti, Hydro Flask, much like Yeti, combines durability with modern aesthetics. Both Stanley and Hydro Flask have their unique strengths, making the choice between them a matter of specific needs and brand loyalty.

Size and Capacity

A bottle’s capacity and size are crucial factors to consider, mainly if it is intended for a specific purpose. Both of the brands compared in this article provide a wide variety of sizes for their products to meet the needs of a broad range of customers.

The Stanley IceFlow Bottle is available in four sizes, from the compact 20oz model to the spacious 64oz variant. Whether you’re out for a short hike, an all-day excursion, or a multi-day camping adventure, Stanley’s got your back.

The bottles from Yeti’s Rambler lineup – including the one featured in this comparison – are also available in multiple sizes. The one we’re discussing here comes in 18oz, 26oz, 36oz, 46oz, and 64oz variants. I should also point out that Yeti is one of those rare drinkware companies offering a unique 1-gallon (3.78 litres) option – the Rambler Jug – ideal for outdoor activities requiring a lot of water.

Even though both brands offer similar sizes for standard insulated bottles, Yeti has an advantage regarding extremely large capacities. It’s the best of all highly-regarded brands for folks always searching for extra-large water containers.

Additional Features

A person filling a white reusable bottle with stream water

Additional features can often tip the balance when choosing between similar products – just like the price. In addition to leakproof lids, many Stanley bottles feature dual-purpose cups. Additionally, many Stanley bottles have a handle that makes them convenient to carry.

Its rival offers a range of lids that customers can purchase separately, including a hotshot cap, a chug cap, and a straw lid. The customisability of Yeti’s products gives it an edge over the competitors – you can adapt your bottles to suit your specific needs.

Unlike many of Stanley’s other bottles, the IceFlow one doesn’t feature a fixed handle. Instead, it sports an ergonomic, rotating handle that makes using and carrying this piece of drinkware as easy as possible. On the other hand, the user can snap shut the model’s straw and, in that way, prevent accidental leaks and spills.

Regarding Yeti Rambler’s additional features, the simple handle (which does not rotate like the one found on Stanley’s model) and the titular Chug Cap are the only ones worth mentioning. The cap allows easy drinking on the go – you only have to half-twist the handle to access it and easily take a few sips while running or cycling. Once again, remove the Chug Cap when using the bottle for hot beverages.

The price becomes a significant factor when two products are closely matched in terms of performance. Stanley has always been known as an affordable brand. The company’s bottles deliver much value for the money, given their design, durability, and insulation performance.

In contrast, Yeti bottles are accompanied by higher price tags. It’s one of those brands with premium reputations that, accordingly, charge premium prices. However, due to Yeti’s modern design and prestigious reputation, many consumers consider its higher price justified.

The price of Stanley’s IceFlow bottle depends on the chosen size and colour. For example, the green (“Alpine”) variant of the largest, 64oz version can cost as much as $50. Still, this is nothing compared to Yeti’s price tags – even the small, 26oz variant can cost as much as $90 if you decide to go with one of the vibrant colours, such as orange or yellow.

This only confirms what I said about the brand’s prestigious reputation – the company charges a lot of money for some of its products as it has become an industry leader with a loyal following. Obviously, this makes the IceFlow bottle a much better choice for those on a budget. Still, it’s worth pointing out that both of these pieces of drinkware, when chosen in basic colours, can be obtained at similar prices.

Yeti versus Hydro Flask has been a topic of debate for many enthusiasts. Hydro Flask, like Yeti, is also known for its premium pricing and modern design, often drawing comparisons in terms of insulation and durability. However, when it comes to price, Hydro Flask often sits between Stanley and Yeti, offering a balance for those seeking both quality and affordability.

The warranty policy of a brand is a significant factor that potential buyers should consider, as it can often prove the company’s confidence in the quality of its products.

In honour of its commitment to quality and long history, Stanley provides lifetime warranties on its vacuum bottles. As a result, you can expect a replacement model from the brand if your bottle fails to perform due to manufacturing defects, giving you peace of mind about your investment.

Warranties accompany Yeti products, too, although they vary in duration. For example, the Rambler series bottles come with a five-year warranty, which reflects the brand’s commitment to customer satisfaction and product quality, even though it’s less comprehensive than Stanley’s.

A thorough comparison of Stanley and Yeti insulated bottles has shown that both companies offer high-quality products with distinctive features.

Known for its affordability, solid durability, and outstanding thermal insulation, Stanley stands as a symbol of tradition and dependability. On the other hand, Yeti shines with its prestigious brand reputation, customisable features, and modern design aesthetics.

The answer to which bottle is better ultimately depends on what you value most. Stanley is your champion if you want excellent thermal insulation and are on a budget. However, if customisation, brand prestige, and modern aesthetics are more important to you, Yeti is your best bet.

While there’s no doubt that outdoor enthusiasts will continue to debate Stanley vs Yeti, one thing is clear: regardless of your choice, you’ll invest in a product that will deliver on its promise. Your outdoor experiences can be enriched by both Stanley and Yeti, sip by sip.

I love hiking, backpacking, and camping. From the Camino de Santiago to the West Highland Way in Scotland or simply a great day hike on the weekend. Hiking refreshes me, my mind, and keeps my body reasonably fit. So far I have walked three Camino routes and many other long distance hikes in the UK, Canada, and around the rest of Europe. One of the best was my hike up Ben Nevis.

I Tested 15 Travel Mugs to Find the Best Ones for Coffee and Tea

My top picks from Zojirushi, Fellow, and Kinto are hot, hot, hot.

The Winners, at a Glance

What we learned, the criteria: what to look for in a travel mug, our favorite travel mugs, the competition.

  • Why We're the Experts

Straight to the Point

Our favorite travel mug is from Zojirushi . It keeps coffee and hot beverages warm for a remarkably long time and has a locking flip lid. For coffee and tea enthusiasts, the Fellow Carter Move Mug has a thinner-edged lip that offers a better drinking experience.

After working at a coffee shop right out of college, I stopped drinking caffeine. It was the inevitable result of having way too much of it (post-college, I did not understand moderation) and coming home with my hair, skin, and clothes smelling of it chronically. But years later, after getting married to a coffee enthusiast (some would say snob), I came back to my love of coffee.

Though I now work from home and can savor my coffee slowly out of a mug, my husband often needs to bring his second cup of coffee on the go. Coupled with the extensive camping and road-tripping we do, travel mugs of all sorts have started to accumulate in our kitchen cabinets.

This is all to say: A review of travel mugs is right up my alley. I set out to test 15 of them to see which ones retained heat and cold best, were comfortable and easy to use, didn’t leak, and offered the best drinking experience.

The Best Overall Travel Mug

Zojirushi sm-sc48hm stainless steel vacuum insulated mug.

This travel mug is deceptively lightweight, yet still holds 16 fluid ounces of coffee or tea. It retains heat for a remarkably long time (longer than any other mug I tested). The lid not only opens up with a simple click of a button but also locks shut with a side switch, so you don’t have to worry about it accidentally opening.

The Best Travel Mug for Coffee and Tea Enthusiasts

Fellow carter move mug.

Courtesy of Fellow

The Fellow Carter Move Mug is designed with coffee enthusiasts in mind. Its heat and cold retention was second only to the Zojirushi and the inner chamber of the mug is ceramic-lined for a neutral flavor. The thin lip of the mug made drinking coffee out of it a pleasure.

Another Good Travel Mug

Kinto day off tumbler.

The Kinto Day Off Tumber is another excellent option for coffee and tea lovers. The top has a looped handle that makes it easy to carry around and the inner lid has a built-in splash guard. It also retains heat and cold for an exceptionally long time.

Note: If a temperature-controlled travel mug is what you're interested in (where you can set and hold the temperature for a prolonged period of time), then the Ember is the one to get. We tested temperature control mugs separately .

  • Heat Retention Test One (without Lid): I filled each travel mug with 212°F boiling water, then left the lid off. I inserted a ChefAlarm 's probe (our favorite probe thermometer ) and set the alarm to 140°F to see how long it took for the temperature to drop.
  • Heat Retention Test Two (with Lid): I filled each travel mug with 212°F boiling water, and then placed the lid on. I took temperature readings each hour to see how long it took for it to drop to 140°F.
  • Cold Retention with Lid: I filled each travel mug with 36°F cold water, and then put the lid back on. I placed the mugs in an oven with the light on, monitoring the temperature of the oven to keep it within 80 to 85°F, to simulate a warm day. I took temperature readings each hour to see how long it took for the water to reach 60°F.
  • Leak Test: I filled each travel mug with water and placed the lid back on. I vigorously shook the travel mug upside down to see how much it would leak.
  • Drinking Test: I filled each mug with 12 ounces of freshly brewed coffee , carrying it around the apartment and outside on walks and drinking from it to see how the user experience was.
  • Cleaning Test: After each test, I thoroughly cleaned the mugs and lids.

Screw Tops Didn’t Leak Like Pop Tops

The travel mugs I tested had two types of lids. One style screwed onto the mug’s body and the other popped on and had a rubber gasket that held the lid in place. The latter were easier to put on, as all you needed to do was push the lid onto the body. However, these mugs all leaked...some worse than others.

Conversely, most of the screw-on lids I tested did not leak much, if at all as long as they were put on properly. The bottom line: Get a travel mug with a screw-on lid and double-check that the lid is properly aligned and seated to avoid leakage.

Drink Buttons Were Annoying

Some lids, like the Contigo West Loop Stainless Steel and Stanley Classic Trigger , require pressing a button to drink from the mug. In theory, this seems like a great idea, as it only requires one hand and could prevent leakage. However, continually pressing a button for extended periods causes hand fatigue, especially if you have mobility or strength issues. This was especially noticeable with the Stanley mug, which had a stronger spring that required more pressure and strength to press.

Lid Design and Drinking Experience

Some lids (like the Camelbak , Yeti Rambler Tumbler , and Yeti Rambler Mug ) featured thick plastic lids with drink holes set slightly back from the edge. Drinking from them felt bulky and cumbersome. Other lids, like the Simple Modern Kona Collection , had a latch right near the opening, hitting my bottom lip as I sipped. My favorite travel mugs had thinner lid edges (like the Zojirushi and Fellow ) or rounder-edged lids (like the Kinto ), which felt more natural and pleasant to drink from. Both the Fellow and the Kinto also allowed you to drink from the mug in any direction.

Heat and Cold Retention

The travel mugs that had the best heat retention also, unsurprisingly, kept liquids cold longer as well. The Zojirushi blew every other mug away on both accounts, taking over 14 hours to drop from 212°F to 140°F and nearly 20 hours for 38°F water to warm up to 60°F. The second-best mug in these tests, the Fellow , took a respectable 10 hours to drop from 212°F to 140°F and 6 hours to go from 38°F to 60°F. The Kinto mug also took 10 hours to drop down to 140°F and 13 hours to get to 60°F. With these three mugs, you could carry around your coffee or tea and it'll stay hot or cold nearly all day.

On the flip side, some of the worse performing mugs, like the Hydro Flask and Corkcicle , dropped temperature alarmingly fast, from 212°F boiling to 140°F in just three hours and 38°F to 60°F in about eight hours. Most folks drink their coffee and tea within a few hours of brewing it, but if you prefer your coffee piping hot or you have a long commute, it’s nice to have a mug that'll go the distance.

Look for a travel mug that has a double-walled, vacuum-sealed body for the best heat and cold retention. Select a travel mug that has a screw-on lid. Pop-on lids are more convenient but leaked. Pick a travel mug that has a rounded or thinner lip for the most pleasant drinking experience.

And, finally, get a travel mug that's suitable for your lifestyle. If you are constantly on the road, look for a mug that's lightweight, easily opens up with just one hand, and fits in your car's cup holder. If you're a long-distance commuter on public transit, find a mug that retains heat exceptionally well and can be safely tossed into a bag.

What we liked : The Zojirushi retained heat and cold for a remarkably long time, longer than any mug I tested. The 212°F boiling water took a little over 14 hours to cool down to 140°F, while cold 36°F water took over 20 hours to warm up to 60°F. The flip-top was easy to use, with a simple button that popped it open. There’s a secondary latch that locks the lid, too.

The mug has a thin plastic lip and the lid comes apart into two pieces, which makes it easier to clean. The inside features a nonstick coating, preventing stains. Best of all, this slim travel mug is incredibly lightweight.

What we didn’t like: The heat retention of the mug is one of its best features. But it also means freshly brewed coffee takes a while to cool down to a drinkable temperature. If you plan on drinking the coffee from the travel mug immediately, make sure to let the coffee cool before pouring it in. Otherwise, you might scald your tongue with each sip.

Also, the opening of this travel mug is narrower than other models. This made it more challenging to clean. (You’ll want a bottle brush for the task.)

  • Material: Stainless steel with nonstick coating and BPA-free plastic
  • Dimensions: 2.625 inches diameter; 8.5 inches tall
  • Dishwasher-safe: No
  • Stated capacity: 16 fluid ounces
  • Fits in a car’s cup holder: Yes
  • Weight: 7 ounces

What we liked : The Fellow Carter Move Mug is great if you prioritize the coffee or tea-drinking experience. The interior chamber of the travel mug is ceramic lined, to help prevent any metallic taste that a cheaper stainless steel model might impart to your coffee or tea. The thin metal edge of the mug feels great on your lips and allows you to drink in whatever direction you pick the mug up from.

The mug features a removable “splash guard” insert that looks a bit like a sink drain. This prevents hot liquid from splashing outwards. The double-walled, vacuum-sealed body retained heat, taking over 10 hours to drop from 212°F to 140°F and 16 hours to rise from 36°F to 60°F.

What we didn’t like: The mug's lid requires you to unscrew it and you need two hands to do so. This also means you have a lid that you need to carry (or put down) when you're drinking. That said, Fellow does sell an optional slide lid (which I did not test).

  • Material: Stainless steel with ceramic interior coating
  • Dimensions: 3 inches diameter; 7.25 inches tall
  • Weight: 12.5 ounces

What we liked : The Kinto is a well-constructed, lightweight mug that retained heat and cold for fairly long, taking nearly 10 hours to cool 212°F boiling water down to 140°F and 13 hours for 36°F water to warm up to 60°F. The mug itself features a two-part top, one that screws onto the body and acts as a splash shield, and one that's a sealing lid with a looped handle.

The first splash shield offers a tapered lip and allows you to drink from all sides of the mug. Like the Fellow, this makes it a pleasure to drink from. The handle on top of the sealing lid is nice for carrying, too.

What we didn’t like: Because the Kinto mug has two parts to the lid that screws onto the body, there is twice the chance of user error where you can misalign the threads and not properly screw on the lid. Like the Fellow, the Kinto lid screws on, which means it requires two hands to remove it. Unlike the Fellow, though, the lid does have a handle, so it's easier to wrap your fingers around it and hold on to it, allowing you to drink with one hand.

  • Material: 18-8 Stainless steel powder coated, with polypropylene and silicone
  • Dimensions: 2.75 inches diameter; 9 inches tall
  • Stated capacity: 16.9 fluid ounces
  • Weight: 10.5 ounces
  • Contigo Stainless Steel Vacuum-Insulated Travel Mug : Contigo makes reasonably priced travel mugs and this one does a good job retaining heat and cold. But the shape of the lid and its small opening meant coffee pooled on top of the lid between sips, which caused dribbling and spilling.
  • Hydro Flask All-Around Stainless Steel Tumbler with Lid : The Hydro Flask travel mug lost heat the quickest of all the mugs I tested, and the pop-on lid leaked.
  • Yeti Rambler 20-Ounce Tumbler : This Yeti Rambler had a pop-on lid that leaked and didn’t retain heat or cold very well.
  • MiiR Flip Traveler: This solidly constructed, lightweight mug was easy to use and retained heat and cold better than most of the mugs I tested. Unfortunately, it leaked a bit, no matter how much I tightened or screwed on the lid.
  • Yeti Rambler 20-Ounce Travel Mug: Unlike the Yeti tumbler we tested, this Yeti mug had a screw-on lid that didn’t leak. It also retained heat and cold for a respectable amount of time. But the thick plastic lid made drinking out of the mug less pleasant than our winners.
  • Contigo West Loop Stainless Steel Vacuum-Insulated Travel Mug : This Contigo mug did a decent job with retaining heat and cold, but having to hold down a button to drink was tedious.
  • Simple Modern Travel Coffee Mug : This mug lost heat and cold relatively quickly.
  • Corkcicle Commuter Cup : Unfortunately, this mug lost heat extremely quickly (in just over three hours).
  • W&P Porter Insulated Tumbler : I loved the feel of this tumbler and its colorful design. But the insulated tumbler lost heat relatively quickly and leaked terribly when turned upside down.
  • CamelBak Horizon Tumbler : The Camelbak tumbler did a poor job of retaining heat and cold. It also had a snap-on lid that leaked.
  • Stanley Classic Trigger Action Travel Mug : The rugged and durable mug felt like what your grandfather probably drank from as he backcountry hiked his way across the Rocky Mountains. It’s built to last a lifetime (and is backed with a lifetime warranty as well). And it did a good job retaining heat and cold. But it's slightly annoying to drink from since you have to push a button to sip. And when you did, the coffee flowed out very slowly.
  • Simple Modern Insulated Thermo s: This travel mug did a great job retaining heat and cold. But the small lid had a flip-top with a locking latch that protruded fairly high, bumping into my bottom lip.

How do you clean coffee or tea stains off of a stainless steel travel mug?

Sprinkle some baking soda (about one to two teaspoons) into the mug and add water to form a paste. Gently scrub with a damp cloth, soft sponge, or bottle brush. The mildly abrasive baking soda should remove the stains.

How do you maximize the heat and cold retention of a travel mug?

For hot beverages, warm up the inside of the travel mug by pouring hot water (it can from the tap) into the mug, letting it sit for a couple of minutes, and empty the mug. Then, add your coffee or hot beverage. For cold drinks, cool the inside by pouring in water and adding a few ice cubes, swirling the cubes around, then drain it and add the cold beverage.

What size travel mug is best?

For most folks, a 12- or 16-ounce travel mug is sufficient. If you're a hardcore coffee drinker or you travel a longer distance for work, a larger 20-ounce mug might be a better fit.

How do you clean a travel mug lid?

If your travel mug's lid disassembles, take it apart. Then soak the lid in warm, soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes, then scrub and thoroughly rinse.

What is the best travel mug?

After testing, the Zojirushi travel mug came out on top, with a convenient flip-top and excellent insulation. But if you prioritize the coffee-drinking experience, the Fellow Carter Move Mug and Kinto Day-Off Tumbler are also excellent.

What travel mug won't leak?

All of our favorite travel mugs (from Zojirushi, Fellow, and Kinto) are leak-proof. The Zojirushi features a flip-cap that locks, while the other two have screw-on lids that prevent accidental spills.

Stanley vs Yeti travel mugs

The best travel mug

When it comes to travel mugs, Yeti seems to be dominating this marketplace.  I personally have 3 of them and love them.  So I was a bit surprised when Stanley reached out and asked me to look at a couple of their travel mugs.

I was shipped the Admirals Mug and the 16oz Classic Trigger Mug.  Both have excellent build quality and a variety of colours.

I’ve been using the Stanley Trigger Mug almost daily since I’ve received it.  The Stanley Cup is easy to clean, keeps my drinks hot and has a unique look so I don’t have to worry about it being stolen by a co-worker.

Yeti also makes great cups for hot liquids as well as their ENORMOUS water cups.   I do use a Yeti often but I prefer the look of the Stanley personally.  Some benefits to the Yeti is that if you ever lose the magnetic slider on the lid, you can find them at most hardware stores.  The Stanley mugs are harder to get replacement parts for.

Regardless of which brand you side with, you’re going to get a quality product.

Best overall: Zojirushi SM-SE Travel Mug

  • Heat retention: 14 hours
  • Ice retention: 7 hours
  • Leak-proof:  Yes
  • Lid style:  Locking spring-loaded push-button flip top
  • Dishwasher safe: No

How we tested

In order to test the best travel mugs, we established several criteria we hoped each of our top picks would meet. Our initial testing period lasted one month, but we are still testing long-term durability in case issues arise.

Temperature retention : To test heat retention, we filled each mug with water heated to 136 degrees Fahrenheit, the optimal temperature for hot beverages according to a study by the University of Texas. We then tested the temperature hourly and noted change. Once the temperature dropped 25 degrees, we deemed the beverage too cold to drink and ended the test.

Which Drinkware

Stanley vs YETI vs Hydro Flask, Battle of The Bottles

In the world of insulated drinkware, these three well known brands have big fan bases and are often compared. Each of the brands have earned a following for their durability, insulation, styling and range of products.  In this comparison of Stanley vs YETI vs Hydro Flask I’m going to focus on their popular bottles, specifically those best suited for drinking coffee or other hot drinks.

I’ll delve into the strengths and features of the bottles from Stanley, YETI, and Hydro Flask to help you choose between the three brands whether you’re an avid outdoor enthusiast, a busy commuter, or simply someone who values a reliably hot (or cold) beverage on-the-go. Each has it’s pros and cons and there isn’t really a clear winner so I’m bringing you the info so that you can decide which will work best for you.

Main image for review comparing Stanley vs YETI vs Hydro Flask.

Stanley vs YETI vs Hydro Flask: Comparing The Specs

Each of these brands have more than one insulated bottle product, so for this review I’m going to compare the Which Drinkware favorite from each of the brands and I’ve used the lid/cap option best suited to drinking coffee. The Stanley Aerolight Transit 16oz Bottle, YETI Rambler 18oz Bottle with HotShot lid and the Hydro Flask Wide Mouth 16oz Bottle with Flex Sip lid. To make sure I give a fair comparison I’ve kept to a similar size for each.

As you can see, the specs are all very similar aside from the dimensions and weight. The Aerolight is true to its name and is lighter and more compact than the others. Whilst the YETI has a slightly larger capacity, it’s significantly heavier than both the Stanley and Hydro Flask.

Stanley vs YETI vs Hydro Flask: Best Insulation

The Stanley and YETI come out on top here with Hydro Flask lagging behind. The insulation performance on the Hydro Flask is still likely good enough for 95% of user’s needs. I’ve included a summary below on how they all perform at keeping coffee hot. You can check out the full test results and details about how the tests are carried out in my article about the current top travel mug  (the Stanley and YETI make my top 5).

Photograph of testing the Stanley Aerolight transit bottle.

Stanley vs YETI vs Hydro Flask: Lids and Accessories

Since most travel mugs have a very similar stainless steel double wall vacuum insulation construction, it is their lids and accessories that can set them apart.

Lid Function

The Stanley Aerolight lid has a covered drinking spout which is accessed by flipping up the latch on top of the lid. Its easy to use and the drinking spout is a nice shape with a good flow. You can find more details in my full Stanley Aerolight bottle review .

Stanley Aerolight Lid for comparison with YETI and Hydro Flask.

With the YETI HotShot lid you drink from around the rim of the lid. It has a handle in the center that you turn to loosen which then allows the drink to flow out of the lid. When the lid is in the open position you can drink from any angle around the lid.

The downsides of the lid design are that since you’re drinking from the rim of the lid it is uncovered and therefore prone to picking up dirt or germs. It also requires two hands to open/close and there is no visual indication of whether the lid is in the open or closed position so you need to double check it’s closed by re-tightening the lid.

The Hydro Flask lid has a small drinking hole which is opened by twisting the lid. Once opened, there is a red indicator visible through the hole which makes it easy to tell when the lid is still open. The big win for Hydro Flask here is the carry handle on top of the lid which makes it really easy to carry whilst you’re on the move. Like the YETI the drinking hole is not covered so has the same problem with potential dirt and it does also requires two hands to open.

Lid Cleaning

Whilst all of these bottles and lids are dishwasher safe, you do still need to deep clean the lids every so often as dirt and gunk can still build up. Each of the lids can come apart for thorough cleaning, you just need to know how to do it. I’ve included some instructions  in my   Stanley Aerolight bottle   review and   YETI bottle lids   article so that you can see what is involved.  The YETI and Hydro Flask are the most straightforward to dismantle and put back together.

Photograph of the Stanley Aerolight lid after dismantling for comparison with YETI and Hydro Flask.

The Hydro Flask lid has some instructions printed on it. You first unscrew the top of the lid to reveal a red silicon insert which should be removed for cleaning. Then flip over and unscrew the bottom piece which comes away so that the surrounding areas can be easily cleaned.

yeti travel mug vs stanley

Lid Options

The YETI and Hydro Flask bottles have multiple interchangeable lid options which can make the bottle multi purpose. The Stanley Aerolight bottle doesn’t currently have any other lid options which makes it the least versatile though you can still use the bottle for hot or cold drinks.

I have written a full article about the YETI bottle lids , comparing the 5 options available and what I like and don’t like about each of the lids. There are options suited to hot drinks and others which are better for cold drinks. The HotShot lid is my favorite for hot drinks.

Image showing the 5 types of YETI bottle lids and how they can be used with the YETI Rambler bottles.

Similar to YETI, the Hydro Flask has a range of interchangeable lid options which we’re currently testing The line up is very similar to YETI with a chug cap, straw cap, the Flex Sip we’ve been covering in this review and a Flex Cap which should offer the best insulation but the cap has to be removed for drinking.

Accessories

yeti travel mug vs stanley

Both YETI and Hydro Flask offer bottle slings so that you can carry your bottle hands free. Hydro Flask also sell color matched silicon bottle boots which can give the bottom of your bottom extra protection as well as reducing noise when placing your bottle on a surface. Stanley don’t currently sell any branded accessories but there are many options available from other retailers.

Each of the brands offer a similar warranty for product defects excluding normal wear and tear. You can expect things like insulation degradation to be covered but not dents and scratches. Stanley and Hydro Flask offer a lifetime guarantee with YETI providing a 5 year guarantee. It is likely that if your product is defective you will find out in early days of using so the 5 year guarantee limit shouldn’t be too much of a concern.  The lifetime guarantees do give a little more peace of mind though!

The Best Travel Mugs: Is Yeti Better Than Contigo?

September 26, 2020 September 24, 2020 | Tessah

Is Yeti better than Contigo

When it comes to the best-insulated coffee mugs , Contigo and Yeti are two of the brands that would come to mind. Their features frequently get compared and we’re all left wondering is Yeti better than Contigo? These well-established brands have been making quality coffee travel mugs for years and are greatly appreciated by travelers and coffee lovers alike.

So, I figured today – we’ll try to settle the score and see which one is better than the other. We’ll put one of each brand’s most popular products under the microscope and check all the factors that make a good coffee mug. On top of the list is of course, how long can they keep my coffee warm? That’s the main reason we get insulated coffee mugs after all.

What Makes The Insulated Best Coffee Mug?

  • Capacity – How much coffee can it hold? I prefer mine to be able to hold at least 2 regular cups of coffee at a time. So preferably a coffee mug that has a 16-ounce capacity will be good. But if you love coffee and hate having to do multiple trips to the coffee machine, might as well get something bigger.
  • Durability – When you invest in a high-quality coffee mug, you expect it to last for years. Therefore, you want to make sure that it has a durable construction. You don’t want it to break or crack if you accidentally drop it or knock it off.
  • Insulation – The whole point of getting an insulated coffee mug is so that it can keep your coffee warm for at least a couple of hours while you go on your daily tasks. For this, I find stainless steel mugs to work the best, specifically vacuum-insulated ones.
  • Cleaning – Another reason to stick with stainless steel mugs, they’re easier to clean. They are usually stain and odor resistant which makes them easier to clean. It’s also good to have a mug that has a wider lip to where you can put a bottle brush or a sponge to clean the inside.

Yeti VS Contigo: Which Is Better?

Both mugs have a 20 oz. capacity. However, Contigo West Loop is also available in 16 oz. and 24 oz mugs. They both weigh around 0.8 pounds too, which is just the right weight as coffee mugs go. Both models fit in cup holders in cars, though Yeti is more stable because it is stouter while Contigo is slender and can be too tall for cup holders.

Winner: Contigo West Loop

The Yeti Rambler and the Contigo West Loop are both made from Stainless Steel. Yeti Rambler is made with 18/8 kitchen-grade stainless steel. This means it is durable and will not easily dent, break, or rust, considering that Yeti products are made for outdoor use. The Contigo West Loop on the other hand is made to be travel friendly so it offers great durability.

Winner: Yeti

The most important thing about an insulated coffee mug, is how well and how long it keeps your coffee hot. Yeti nailed it down with double-wall vacuum insulation on the Rambler. This effectively keeps your drink steaming hot for hours. Contigo has the same double-wall insulation plus an auto-seal lid that helps it keep your drink hot for up to 6 hours. This also keeps it from spilling coffee all over the place.

Both models are made from stainless steel, this makes them more hygienic as it is easier to clean and odor resistant. However, I find Yeti easier to clean as it has a wider opening than the Contigo. Plus, the Auto seal lid can be quite hard to clean.

If you’re one of those wondering, “ what can I use to clean my water bottle ?” Check out my other blog post.

Final Thoughts: Is Yeti better Than Contigo?

The obvious winner here is Yeti ! So yes, Yeti is better than Contigo as it provides better durability, insulation, and performance in general. Hope this helps you decide on your next travel mug! Leave us a comment below about what you think.   😊

A Brief History of the Moscow Metro

Train at Arbatskaya metro station, Moscow, Russia

There are many things for which Moscow is famous, and the metro is certainly one of the most prominent of them. The metro is the city’s beating heart. During peak hours, crowds of people pour out into the streets to the rhythm of the trains entering and leaving the stations. The metro is Moscow’s primary means of public transport; it’s also a monument to its turbulent history and vibrant present, and a crucial element and major constituent of its identity. You can’t understand Moscow without understanding its metro – this is why we’re introducing its brief history to you here.

Moscow’s metro is the most crowded in the world..

Moscow metro serves the largest number of passengers a day out of all the metro systems in the world : on weekdays this number goes up to nine million. It consists of 14 lines and 212 stations and has more than 360 km of tracks. Plus, 44 of these stations are cultural monuments. Why is that the case? And how did it all start?

Kiyevskaya metro station, Moscow

It all started with Stalin.

Elektrozavodskaya Moscow Metro Station, Russia.

What happened to the metro during the wars?

The Second World War had an influence on everything that happened in the country. The construction of the metro was no exception. Pro-socialist interior motifs were replaced with war-themed décor, the construction of new stations was delayed, and some of the old stations went out of service. Many of the stations served as air-raid shelters during the siege of Moscow in 1941. After the war, construction picked up again. The most iconic of the lines, the ring line, was opened. It traces the Garden Circle (one of the main avenues of the city). The ring makes changing lines wonderfully easy. It is marked brown in all the official metro plans. Rumour has it that it was never a part of the initial design, but that Stalin put a coffee mug on the provisional plans that left a mark in the shape and location of the current ring line, and that it was then constructed because nobody then dared to oppose the Leader’s note. The Cold War brought with it a reduction in both the metro’s budget and extravagance. The Cold War stations , located a little bit further from the centre, can be recognised immediately: they all look almost the same, with a row of columns running on both sides of the platform. The only difference between them is the colour of the marble or ceramic tiles on the walls.

What is happening with the metro now?

Nowadays, the Moscow metro is constantly expanding, with new stations added to the lines every year. 2016 was especially important in the life of the metro: it is when the second (on-land) circle line was open. The Moscow metro is also an important element of culture: one of the most popular contemporary Russian writers, Dmitri Glukhovsky , set his post-apocalyptic novels entirely in the metro. The metro is, figuratively and literally, the heart of Moscow. If you want to truly get to know the city, start from the metro.
