The great Victoria Falls near Livingstone in Zimbabwe, with a rainbow at dusk

Zambia is home to emerald green national parks with abundant crocodile, elephant and hippo populations.

While the village communities holding centuries of traditional wisdom will stop you in your tracks, it's Mother Nature's 'Smoke that Thunders' (known as Victoria Falls to most) that steals the show as Zambia's standout attraction. Adrenaline-charged sports, markets full of tribal mementos and thrilling safari adventures play worthy supporting roles to Victoria Falls's show-stopping spectacle.

Best time to visit zambia.

August, September and October are some of the best months to spot wildlife, though the days heat up towards the end of this period, especially in the national parks. For cooler weather and greener landscapes, May to August is the time to visit as the weather is cooler but still dry. The wet season generally runs from November to April. At this time many of the national parks are closed and the animals are harder to spot.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Zambia shares borders with Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania ,   Botswana , Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo. While Zambia is one of the most urbanized countries in   Africa , there are still areas of natural beauty to enjoy, with woodlands, savanna, grassland and forested national parks providing a home to mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and insects.

As the source of the mighty Zambezi River (which flows through five other countries), Zambia can lay claim to one of the world's longest rivers. World Heritage-listed Victoria Falls (which is shared with neighboring Zimbabwe) is an iconic feature of the Zambezi, inspiring awe and wonder for centuries.

Top 5 adventure activities in Zambia

1. canoeing.

Going on a canoe safari is a must-do adventure when traveling in Zambia. Take advantage of the Zambezi's many channels and estuaries and glide along, spotting animals, admiring the scenery and stopping for breaks along the way.

2. Bungee jumping

Here's an adventure option for travelers with nerves of steel. Bungee jumping is a popular adrenaline sport for tourists, with the Zambezi providing the perfect 'landing' (or dip!) for brave jumpers. While not suitable for everyone - fit, healthy travelers with a lust for pushing their limits will love it.

3. Gorge swinging

With plenty of sheer cliff walls and deep gorges, Zambia is the perfect place to try gorge swinging. Considered a little less intense than bungee jumping, this is a great way to have a memorable time while avoiding the deep panic and fear often induced by bungee jumping.

4. White water rafting

The powerful Zambezi provides low and high rapids suitable for experienced and novice rafters. Bring your energy and fitness, as this adventurous option isn't for passengers - you'll need to paddle hard and hold on tight at times.

5. Scenic flying

Seeing Victoria Falls from a helicopter or micro aircraft may break the budget - but to experience the wonder and majesty of one of the Seven Wonders of the World from the air is surely worth the investment. This may not be one for those with a fear of heights (or flying) but definitely a worthy experience for thrill seekers with a sense of adventure.

Why Travel to Zambia ? by Luke Hardiman

Although tourism in Zambia is picking-up, it is still relatively untouched by mass tourism making for an untamed travel experience. Zambia is not a run-of-the-mill safari destination, with safari packages to its game parks and highlights offering adventurous travelers a truly wild African encounter. Our safaris to Zambia typically visit Victoria Falls, the adventure capital of Africa, and the game-rich South Luangwa National Park. On our Budget Zambia Safaris visitors get to enjoy the friendly people of Zambia, take in its natural highlights, and experience some of the best game viewing in Africa.

Where is Zambia?

Zambia lies in South-Central Africa and is considered part of Southern Africa. It is a landlocked country, slightly larger than Texas or France, and borders eight neighboring countries.

Due to its central location (where Southern, Central, and East Africa meet) Zambia is easy to add to safaris in both Southern and East Africa.

Zambia Tours and Holidays 2024/2025

In southern Zambia, you will find what is undeniably one of the most beautiful sites in all of Africa: Victoria Falls , which plunge 108 metres down into the Batoka Gorge, not far from Livingstone . This diverse country also offers wildlife safari tours in its South Luangwa National Park, or take a trip to Lake Tanganyika - the longest freshwater lake in the world.

Zambia Tour Reviews

Zambia - tour highlights and travel tips.

A trip to Zambia will open you to untouched wilderness and unparalleled natural beauty, including Victoria Falls.

If when you think of Africa you think of safaris, a trip to Zambia is for you. Home to unparalleled natural beauty, including Victoria Falls (one of the seven natural wonders of the world), Zambia is full of untouched wilderness waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re looking for thrilling adventure (bungee jumping, anyone?) or luxurious camps and safari lodges, Zambia is the alternative traveler’s paradise.

Tour Highlights

  • Take a safari tour through South Luangwa National Park for some of the continent’s best views of big game
  • Swim the rapids from Livingstone Island to exhilarating Devil’s Pool on the cusp of Victoria Falls (if you dare!)
  • Experience the serenity of the Zambezi River with a sunset cruise (or the party-like atmosphere, depending on your tour provider!)
  • Sip on high tea with the zebras at the Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls Hotel
  • Seek the ultimate thrill by bungee jumping off of Victoria Falls Bridge

Travel Tips

  • If spotting wildlife is your number one priority for your trip to Zambia, it’s best to visit during the dry season (between May and November). Avoiding the rainy season means safari camps are more likely to be open.
  • Love trying new things? Try snacking on crispy caterpillars or worms - served grilled from street cars across the country.
  • Zambians are conservative and most strictly adhere to the Christian faith. Don’t be surprised to find locals carrying Bibles around. Women should not wear revealing clothing, and same sex relations is not openly discussed.
  • While most wild animals tend to be confined to Zambia’s national parks, do keep an eye out for snakes on your holiday in Zambia. Elephants are also known to roam into town (looking for mangoes) and startle easily.
  • Petty crime (i.e. stealing) is pretty common in Zambia. Be sure to keep an eye on your belongings and, as always, keep your wits about you.

We have a wide range of Zambia Safaris and tours including cost and prices. Described by many as "the Real Africa", Zambia is a country of wide open spaces rich in wildlife with magnificent forests, wild rivers, sweeping plains and impressive waterfalls. Zambia Safaris offers exceptional game viewing, whether you're on a river cruise in the Lower Zambezi, a walking safari through South Luangwa or a game drive in Kafue - the largest of Zambia's national parks , and the only place you'll find cheetah.

A network of daily scheduled charter flights can whisk you straight to remote wilderness areas. Once there, you'll be treated to an authentic Zambia safari experience with luxurious and intimate camps and lodges, 5-star service, and some of the best guides in Africa.

Walking Safaris and Family Holidays

For a truly unique safari holiday, we'd highly recommend a guided walking safari. Set out on foot for an overnight trail, or a full week - staying in well-equipped mobile safari camps; like the popular Classic Zambia Walking Safari.

Zambia is full of surprises: it's also a great destination for adventurous families with a range of exciting Zambia family holidays to choose from, and safari villas with their own chefs and guides - giving you more privacy and flexibility during your stay.

Exploring Zambia and its Neighbors

Safaris like a Zambian Adventure for Everyone, combine exciting game drives and walks in the country's premier parks, with a stay on the Zambezi River - upstream of the thundering Victoria Falls: not only the largest sheet of falling water in the world, but also famed for its wide selection of adrenalin activities.

Another great option is rounding off your Zambian safari holiday by hopping across the border to Malawi, for a couple of relaxing days on Lake Malawi's peaceful shores, or a bit of snorkelling in glass-like water.

With regular Victoria Falls flights, and daily connections between Lusaka and Nairobi, it's now easy to combine Zambia with world-renowned reserves in East Africa: Kenya and Tanzania .

Zambia Safari Cost & Prices

Your Zambia safari cost is determined by the park entry fees, accommodation choices and the duration and game drives on your itinerary. Our Zambia safari packages have all these inclusive of the cost.

When to Visit Zambia

The best time for game viewing in Zambia is the dry season (May to October), however, the rainy season (November to April) is commonly called the Emerald Season because of the richer colours, and is better for river activities (although some camps close during this time).

The highlight was the continous talking with the guides about the culturell background (tribes, cities, colony time, social behaviour,...). The culturell tour itself was overall interesting. However, the actual options are limited. Museums (Choma/Livingstone) und culturell exhibition (Livingstone: Mukini Village, Maramba Culturll Village). The historical site of the british history in Kalomo needs to be prepared better by the government. Overall I expected more. Instead of extra "free" time in Livingstone the time should be changed in 3 overnight stays at 2 the village of 2 tribes (living/cooking). And the overall booking of the agreed hotels should be paid of the agency to the hotels before start of the tour. I had problems in Livingstone.

Kanzwa short holiday break excursion - 2 Nights Safari Tour to Kafue National Park - Central Region

Really enjoyed my three day/two night Karfue National Park tour with this team. If you’re after personal, customised service, then these guys will be able to help you. The park itself is enormous… Probably best combined with one of the other more “animals on tap” parks like Chobe or South Luangwa. Mark went out of his way to make sure I had a good in-depth look at the more remote sections of the park which is very beautiful and very under touristed. Instead of rigid to game drives, we spent the whole day doing several of the Park game circuits which I really appreciated. Accommodation at the lodge was not great, but adequate and much better than paying three or four times as much at a luxury lodge to do the same daytime activities. Overall, a great option for the value, seeking Traveler – you won’t regret it.

Budget tours & trips to zambia reviews.

The Fascinating History of Devil’s Pool

Devil’s Pool in Zambia is a natural wonder that has attracted tourists from around the world. But what is the fascinating history behind this unique destination?

Let’s dive into the past and discover the story of Devil’s Pool. Livingstone Island, where Devil’s Pool is located, was named after David Livingstone, a Scottish explorer who was the first European to set foot on its shores in 1855.

Livingstone was a missionary and an abolitionist who traversed Africa, documenting his travels and advocating for an end to slavery. During his expeditions, he came across Victoria Falls and wrote about it in his journal: “No one can imagine the beauty of the view from anything witnessed in England.”

However, it was not until 1905 that Devil’s Pool gained popularity as a tourist destination. The credit for this goes to Frederick Russell Burnham, an American scout who served in Africa during World War I. Burnham wrote about his visit to Victoria Falls and described how he swam in a pool on the edge of the falls without going over them – Devil’s Pool.

Since then, Devil’s Pool has become one of Zambia’s top attractions for adventure tourism. Visitors flock here every year to experience its breathtaking beauty and heart-pumping activities like swimming at its edge.

However, with great adventure comes great responsibility. There are some safety tips visitors need to follow when they visit Devil’s Pool.

For instance, you should not swim alone or without a guide; wear appropriate Zambia travel gear such as waterproof cameras or travel clothing; be careful when walking on slippery rocks; follow all instructions given by your guide; and respect local customs and traditions. Despite these precautions, hundreds of tourists flock to Zambia every year hoping to experience Devil’s Pool swim which provides stunning views of Victoria Falls from a unique vantage point.

Whether you’re looking for thrills or just want to soak up some of Zambia’s hospitality while enjoying the unparalleled natural beauty, a visit to Devil’s Pool is a must. So pack your bags, book your Zambia accommodations or Zambia Airbnb, and get ready to experience one of the most awe-inspiring places in Africa.

How to Reach Devil’s Pool – Your Ultimate Guide

Exploring Devil’s Pool is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that requires careful planning. To make sure that you do not miss this hidden gem, here is your ultimate guide to reaching Devil’s Pool.

Getting to Devil’s Pool requires a flight into Livingstone, Zambia. From Livingstone Airport, there are various ways to reach Victoria Falls and Devil’s Pool , including by taxi or shuttle.

The journey takes around 20 minutes and you’ll pass through a small town before arriving at the entrance of Victoria Falls National Park. Once inside the park, visitors can purchase tickets for both entrance fees and activities.

The entrance fee includes access to the park as well as viewing areas of the waterfalls from different vantage points, while activities include adventures such as visiting Livingstone Island and swimming in Devil’s Pool. The journey from Victoria Falls National Park gate to Livingstone Island is about 15 minutes by boat across the Zambezi River.

You can either take an organized tour which includes boat transport or hire one on your own if you prefer a more personalized experience. From Livingstone Island itself, it is only a short swim across to Devil’s Pool – but don’t worry if swimming isn’t your forte!

An experienced guide will accompany you for the entire swim and help ensure that all safety measures are taken. Swimming in Devil’s Pool is an unforgettable experience that offers unparalleled views of Victoria Falls from a unique perspective.

It is important to note that during peak season (June-August), reservations for both Livingstone Island tours and swimming in Devil’s Pool fill up quickly. It’s recommended to book your trip in advance so that you don’t miss out on this amazing adventure!

Getting to Devil’s Pool requires flights into Livingston Airport followed by ground transportation which includes taxis or shuttles followed by boats providing access between Victoria Falls National Park gate or Livingston Island located near Devil’s Pool area itself. With proper planning and preparation, you can have a safe and memorable adventure at one of Zambia’s most breathtaking destinations.

Best Time to Visit Devil’s Pool for an Unforgettable Experience

If you’re planning a trip to Devil’s Pool, timing is everything. Visiting at the right time of year can mean the difference between an unforgettable experience and a disappointing one. Here’s what you need to know about the best time to visit Devil’s Pool for your Zambia adventure tourism:

The dry season (June to September) is widely considered the best time to visit Devil’s Pool. During this period, Victoria Falls experiences its lowest water levels, which creates a natural rock barrier that separates it from the pool.

This makes it safer and easier for visitors to get close to the edge and experience the thrill of looking over. While visiting during the dry season is generally recommended, there are still some things you should keep in mind.

The water level can start rising as early as October, so if you’re planning a trip late in September or after that month, be prepared for higher and more forceful water flow. On the other hand, if you visit during the wet season (November to May), expect high water levels as well as stronger currents from Victoria Falls which may make it harder – if not impossible -to access Devil’s Pool swim.

But while visiting during this period may not offer an opportunity for swimming in Devil’s Pool, it does provide breathtaking views of Victoria Falls at its full power. In addition to lower water levels and better access during dry season months like June through August or early September – temperatures also tend toward more comfortable averages of around 80F/27C rather than approaching 100F/38C in hotter months like October or November.

Overall, there are pros and cons no matter what time of year you choose – but if your primary goal is experiencing this natural wonder up close in Zambia travel guide book with optimal chances of swimming right up alongside Livingstone Island without being swept away by stronger currents then visiting during the dry season is undoubtedly your best bet! Don’t forget some crucial items on your Zambia travel gear list that can make all the difference in your comfort and safety, such as waterproof cameras and appropriate travel clothing.

Once you’re there, make sure to follow Zambia safety tips and guidelines to ensure you have a fun yet secure Zambia adventure tourism experience. In any season, it’s essential to book your accommodations near Devil’s Pool well in advance as they tend to get booked up fast.

From top-level Zambia hospitality hotels to cosy Airbnb stays in Livingstone Island – there are plenty of options available for every kind of traveller. Regardless of when you visit, Devil’s Pool is sure to be an unforgettable experience not to be missed while exploring the wonders of Zambia tourism!

Safety Measures for a Fun and Secure Devil’s Pool Adventure

When planning a trip to Devil’s Pool, safety should always be a top priority. Although the experience is thrilling, there are certain precautions that visitors should take to ensure a fun and secure adventure. Here are some important safety measures to keep in mind:

First and foremost, it’s essential to make sure that you’re a confident swimmer before attempting the Devil’s Pool swim. The currents at Victoria Falls can be strong and unpredictable, so visitors should be comfortable swimming in fast-moving water.

Additionally, it’s recommended that visitors wear life jackets during their swims for added safety. Another important safety consideration is footwear.

Visitors will need to walk on slippery rocks to reach Livingstone Island and Devil’s Pool, so sturdy water shoes with good traction are essential. It’s also a good idea to bring an extra pair of shoes for walking around Livingstone Island.

Sunscreen is another must-have item when visiting Devil’s Pool. The sun can be intense in Zambia, especially during the summer months, so it’s important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

A hat or sunglasses can also provide additional protection. It’s important to follow all instructions given by your guide when visiting Devil’s Pool or any other attraction near Victoria Falls.

They will have extensive knowledge of the area and will be able to ensure your safety while still providing an unforgettable experience. In addition to these general safety tips, there are a few specific precautions that visitors should take when swimming in Devil’s Pool itself.

One of the most important is avoiding diving or jumping into the pool from any height – even if other visitors are doing so. Rocks and underwater obstacles can be difficult to see in the clear water, making jumping dangerous.

Another potential hazard in Devil’s Pool is getting too close to the edge of Victoria Falls itself. While it may seem tempting for an incredible photo opportunity, it can be extremely dangerous – particularly during high water levels when currents are stronger.

By following these safety measures, visitors can ensure that their Devil’s Pool adventure is both thrilling and secure. With the right Zambia travel gear, Zambia safety tips, and a bit of caution, you can experience the best of Zambia adventure tourism with confidence and peace of mind.

Unleash the Adventurer in You – Activities at Devil’s Pool

Unleash the Adventurer in You – Activities at Devil’s Pool If you’re looking for adventure, Devil’s Pool is the place to be!

The natural pool is surrounded by rocks and offers a breathtaking view of Victoria Falls. Besides swimming, there are several activities to keep you entertained during your trip.

You can take a guided tour of the island and learn more about its history. The guides are knowledgeable and will tell you fascinating stories about how David Livingstone discovered Victoria Falls.

For adrenaline junkies, bungee jumping is an activity that should not be missed. Victoria Falls has one of the highest bungee jumps in the world, with a height of 111 meters.

Before embarking on this adventure, however, it is important to note some safety tips to ensure an unforgettable experience. First and foremost, it is highly recommended to hire a tour guide who can take you through the Devil’s Pool safely.

Livingstone Island offers guided tours with experienced guides who know how to navigate the area and provide valuable insights into the history and beauty of the place. Secondly, it is essential to wear proper swimwear for this adventure.

A swimsuit that fits snugly will help prevent any accidents due to loose clothing or gear while swimming in Devil’s Pool. It is also recommended to wear water shoes with good traction as rocks around Devil’s Pool can be slippery.

Once you’ve ensured your safety gear and hired a guide, it’s time for the real fun – taking a dip in Devil’s Pool itself! The best time for swimming in Devil’s Pool is during the dry season (September – December) when water levels are at their lowest point.

As you approach Victoria Falls from above, you’ll be able to see just how close you are getting as Livingstone Island comes into view. Once you arrive at the Livingstone Island jetty, it’s just a short swim across calm waters before arriving at Devil’s Pool.

Reaching your destination after overcoming all these challenges makes this experience even more worth it. You’ll get that adrenaline rush as soon as your toes touch down and feel like there isn’t much separating you from falling over Victoria Falls itself!

It truly feels like an achievement once your guide helps you get into position safely so that you can sit on the edge of Devil’s Pool with nothing but rushing water behind and below! All in all, taking a swim in Devil’s Pool is a thrilling experience that should be on the bucket list of any adventure traveller visiting Zambia.

With proper safety measures, comfortable travel gear, and a professional guide to lead the way, you can enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime adventure while staying safe and secure. Must-Have Safety Gear for Your Devil’s Pool Swim

When planning your trip to Devil’s Pool, it’s important to make sure you have all the necessary safety gear. While swimming in Devil’s Pool is a thrilling experience, it can also be dangerous if proper precautions aren’t taken.

Here are some must-have safety gear items for your Devil’s Pool swim: First and foremost, a life jacket is essential.

Even if you’re a strong swimmer, the current in the Zambezi River can be unpredictable and strong at times. A life jacket will ensure that you stay afloat if you get caught in a current or swept over the edge of the waterfall.

Next up are sturdy water shoes with good grip. The rocks around Devil’s Pool can be slippery, so you must have good traction on your feet to avoid slipping and falling into the water.

Another vital item is a sunscreen with high SPF protection. Zambia is known for its sunny weather and spending time in the sun while swimming can lead to sunburns or other skin issues if not protected properly.

A waterproof bag or pouch to store your belongings will also come in handy during your swim at Devil’s Pool. You don’t want to risk losing any of your valuable belongings such as phones, cameras or passports while enjoying this unique attraction.

In addition, bring earplugs as they can help protect against water entering your ears during underwater activities whilst providing an additional level of comfort when experiencing what could otherwise be quite challenging acoustics created by Victoria Falls. By packing these must-have safety gear items for your Devil’s Pool adventure, you’ll be able to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience without any worries about potential safety hazards.

Remember: better safe than sorry! Don’t forget to also consider wearing appropriate attire such as rash guards and bathing suits with appropriate coverage while swimming at Devil’s Pool- not only does this offer sun protection but it also helps keep debris from clinging onto unwelcome areas!

Comfortable and Durable Travel Clothing for Your Zambia Trip

When planning your adventure to Devil’s Pool in Zambia, it’s essential to pack comfortable and durable travel clothing. Since Zambia is known for its tropical climate, it’s best to pack lightweight, breathable fabrics that are also moisture-wicking.

This will keep you cool and dry during your excursion. When choosing what to wear, consider the activities you will be doing in Devil’s Pool.

If you’re planning on swimming in the pool or taking a boat ride, wearing quick-drying swimwear is a must. You can also opt for water-resistant shorts or pants that dry quickly and provide protection from the sun.

For hiking enthusiasts, choose comfortable hiking shoes with good traction to navigate through rocky terrain. You can also wear light-coloured long-sleeve shirts and pants with built-in UPF protection for added sun protection.

Additionally, packing a hat with a wide brim will keep the sun off your face and neck. Another important factor to consider when choosing travel clothing is insect protection.

Mosquitoes are prevalent in Zambia, so packing insect-repellent clothing or sprays is advisable. Lightweight long-sleeve shirts and pants made of breathable fabric can help protect your skin from mosquito bites.

When visiting Zambia, it’s always good to bring layers of clothing as temperatures can fluctuate during different times of day. During early mornings or late evenings safaris, it can get chilly so having a light sweater or jacket comes in handy.

Packing the right travel clothing for your Devil’s Pool adventure is crucial for comfort and safety during your trip. Be sure to consider the activities you’ll be doing while keeping weather conditions in mind when making decisions on what clothes to bring with you on your journey through Zambia’s incredible natural beauty!
