Ultimate Guide to Once Islas: Island Hopping in Zamboanga

Attention, nature & beach lovers! Zamboanga City has opened a new attraction and it is great: Once Islas.

Once Islas is a new eco-cultural tourism attraction which opened to public last July 2018. It is composed of 11 islands along the Moro Gulf, which belong to the barangays of Panubigan and Dita in Zamboanga del Sur. Of these islands, 4 are opened to the public and can be reached by registering at the office of Barangay Panubigan. These are Bisaya-Bisaya , Sirommon , Baung-Baung and Buh-Buh . The first three are ideal for swimming and snorkeling, while the last one is for cultural touring.

We visited Once Islas as part of the fam trip for Zamboanga Hermosa Festival 2018 . As a beach lover — you know we mostly cover beaches here in our blog — I was beyond excited to set foot in Once Islas.

Discover Once Islas with us in this post!

Bisaya-Bisaya Island

Sirommon island, buh-buh island, baung-baung island, how to get to once islas, how to book your once islas tour, once islas rates, where to buy food, reminders and tips, what to read next:, our island hopping tour in once islas.

We attended a short orientation in the barangay hall for the island hopping, and then we walked to the port where there were boats waiting for us. At this moment, I knew that it’s going to be good because even the view there was great — we were facing an island with deep-green water, lots of trees and, on the other side, a picturesque seaside community.

Island across the port in Panubigan

The first island we stopped by is Bisaya-Bisaya Island. It has pristine white-sand beach and deep-green water. There’s lots of coconuts among other trees.

I love that it’s so clean! The LGU brings garbage bags so guests won’t have to leave their litter in the island.

Bisaya-Bisaya Island, Once Islas

We trekked to one side of the island with the tour guides to see rock formations. Then we went to have fresh buko (because all great beach escapades include fresh buko).

Trekking in Bisaya-Bisaya Island, Once Islas

Some people went swimming, some went kayaking. The water was nice and warm, and you can snorkel not far from the shore. There’s tons of corals and fishes, but it isn’t as lively as other snorkeling areas I’d been to. Still, it adds on option on things to do if you ever get tired of swimming.

Kayaking in Bisaya-Bisaya Island, Once Islas

When it was low tide, we crossed to the adjacent islet (our tour guide Errold said it’s still considered part of Bisaya-Bisaya Island) where there’s a natural pool. A little small, but perfect for that Instagram photo. ( Read also : Natural pools in the Philippines )

Way to natural pool in Bisaya-Bisaya Island, Once Islas

On our way to the next stop, we saw other islands and again there were some nice views. People are usually focused on the stops, but one thing that I enjoy about island hopping is passing by unknown islands as well. Here’s one of locals picking up shells (I assume) when it was low tide.

Our second island hopping stop was Sirommon Island. Sirommon Island is known for its sand bar.

What we did first is trek for about 5-10 minutes to get to the other side of the island where our lunch was waiting — a boodle fight consisting of fresh seafood like tuna, crabs and squid as well as pako (seaweed) and fruits. Yum yum yum. It’s one of the best meals I had during our one-week trip to Zamboanga.

Seafood boodle fight in Sirommon Island, Once Islas

Sirommon Island is the best place for snorkeling & diving in Once Islas . It was, however, low tide during our visit and we didn’t bring our own snorkeling gears.

After lunch, we went back to the main beach area and stayed at the sand bar. The sand bar is home to numerous star fishes. It reminded me of Candaraman Island in Balabac . Anyway, I’m calling this Starfish Sand Bar. The water here is warm and cold in some parts. It’s also a great place to chill, I wished we had more time.

Starfishes in Sirommon Island, Once Islas

We didn’t stop by Buh-Buh Island, but we had a glimpse of its mosque.

Mosque in Buh-Buh Island, Once Islas

Our last stop was at Baung-Baung Island. Again, it has white-sand beach and good for swimming. There’s also an option to trek for an overlooking view of Bisaya-Bisaya Island. The trek takes 248 steps, but it sounds more intimidating than it is — it probably takes no more than 10 minutes to reach the view deck. And the view is really worth it!

Baung-Baung Island, Once Islas

Regretfully, we were only in Once Islas for a whole afternoon — and I’d learned that currently only day tours are allowed. Even though I was able to swim, snorkel, trek, eat snacks and lunch, it still felt a little too short to spend in these pristine islands. Oh well, there’s always a next beach vacay.

Once Islas is located about an hour away from the city proper. Here are the commute directions:

  • Head to the integrated bus terminal. From there, ride a north-bound bus bound for Pagadian or Ipil and get off at Panubigan crossing.
  • From the crossing, ride a habal-habal to the barangay hall, which is where you need to register.

Transfers can also be arranged by the tourism office or your travel agency.

Here are things you need to know:

  • Island hopping is open for day tours only, from 7AM to 3PM so make sure to get there early. Tours are open daily except Fridays.
  • As of 2024, walk-ins are now accommodated in Once Islas. However, reservation is still recommended especially on busy dates like holidays. Tourists are limited to 200 a day only.
  • On your booked date, proceed to Barangay Panubigan and register at the city tourism office. From there, just walk to the port where a boat will fetch you for island hopping.

For hassle-free tours to Once Islas, we recommend joining a tour by iTravel Tourist Lane . Please say hello to Errold from us!

Fees are as follows ( Updated as of 2024 ):

  • Entrance fee: P100 per person
  • Environmental fee: P100 per person
  • Boat rental fee: P1200 (Bisaya-Bisaya to Baung-Baung route; good for 5 pax) or P2000 (Island Cruise; good for 5 pax)
  • Local guide fee: P300 (good for 5 pax)

Optional fees:

  • Cottage rental: P150 per island
  • Kayak rental: P300 per hour (good for 2 pax)

You can bring your own food.

If you want to ask for lunch to be included, inform the tourism office ahead of time so that it can be arranged for you. You may also buy fresh ingredients such as seafood from locals once you get to Barangay Panubigan and have it cooked in Sirommon Island for a small fee.

Fresh coconuts are also available in Once Islas.

  • Bring your own snorkeling equipment.
  • In respect to local’s culture, bringing & cooking of pork is not recommended.
  • No alcohol.
  • No bringing of pets.
  • No overnight stay.
  • No nudity. 🙁

Enjoy your island hopping experience in Once Islas!

ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR: PAGADIAN TOURIST SPOTS

by thepinay solobackpacker | Apr 14, 2016 | Philippines , Zamboanga del Sur | 0 comments

Pagadian City, the capital of Zamboanga del Sur province connects Zamboanga Peninsula with the rest of the region. This bustling metropolis was converted into a chartered city on June 21, 1969.

Pagadian was once marketed as the “Little Hong Kong of the South” because of its steep hilly terrain plummeting into the sun-spangled coast, akin to the former British colony, but it sure deserves to have its own title without being linked to another country.

Pagadian Places to See

Despite its breath of urban air in the city center, just off the highway, are natural attractions sprinkled on vast agricultural lands fringed by jungle-clad mountains that make all the commercialism seem irrelevant. The best way for tourists to see the sights here is to charter Pagadian’s iconic vehicle – the inclined tricycle, for about Php 700-1,000 per day depending on the destination.

Horseback riding Rotonda Park Pagadian

For first time travelers in Pagadian, it is customary to start the tour at Rotonda Park, nestled on the summit of Bulatoc Hill .  Here, you have the option to go horseback riding for as cheap as Php 20 per 3 rounds.  A viewing deck nearby offers a scenic view of Pajares Avenue.

PAJARES AVENUE

Pajares Avenue Pagadian

If you are wondering why Pagadian is dubbed as “Little Hong Kong of the South” when there are no skyscrapers or cramped high-rise apartment buildings, and it’s definitely not as clean as the latter, then head to the highest point of Pajares Avenue in front of Rotonda Park.  Pajares Avenue plunges into Illana Bay, showcasing the steep terrain of Pagadian City like Hong Kong .

DAO-DAO ISLANDS

Dao Dao Island Pagadian

At Illana Bay , the jade-colored Dao-Dao islets float over the glassy, azure sea. It is only approximately 10 minutes away from mainland Pagadian that is why it is a popular beach escape to locals. Interestingly, it is said that artificial reefs have been submerged here to enhance the habitat for reef organisms. The bigger island aptly named as Dako (big) is ideal for swimming. When the tide recedes, a smaller islet (more like a sandbar) called Gamay (small) emerges.

PUTING BALAS SANDBAR

Puting Balas Sandbar Pagadian

Aptly named Puting Balas which means “white island’, this sandbar situated off the coast of Pagadian City is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.  As your boat approaches the island, flocks of birds will most likely fly in unison and perform spectacular swirls in mid-air. Putting Balas Sandbar is lapped by clear, azure water and from a distance you can see the awe-inspiring,soaring massifs of Zamboanga del Sur.

AGRO-TOURISM AND HERITAGE COMPLEX

PAGADIAN CITY TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

If you’re visiting Pagadian in December, do drop by at the Agro-Tourism and Heritage Complex where every town in Zamboange del Sur showcase their products.

KENDIS CAVE

For spelunking enthusiasts, don’t fret as Pagadian has a handful of caves ready for exploration such as Kendis Cave in Brgy.Dagatan about 15 kilometers away from Pagadian.  Used to be accessible only by grueling horseback, motorists can now visit Kendis Cave.  The limestone tunnel here is carved by a shallow subterranean river.

GUIPOS CAVE

For adventure-seekers, Guipos Cave is perfect for you; there is an extreme and easy spelunking here, just like Sumaguing Cave in Sagada.  Prepare to get wet as you crawl pretty low, narrow limestone tunnels half-filled with water.  It may be more of an adventure than you baragained for, but the stalactites here are pretty impressive!

MANGA FALLS

manga falls pagadian city zamboang del sur

It was El Nino during my visit so Manga Falls was empty.  But judging from the nice-looking rock formation here, it is undoubtedly worth a visit.  Manga Falls is also pretty easy to reach from the town center.  You can hire a tricycle from downtown to take you there.  The place surrounding Manga Falls is clad by verdant forest where white monkeys reside! Yes, I spotted some of these charming creatures hiding on soaring trees.

Pagadian Tourist Attractions

There is also a nice view of the farm below on the road to Manga Falls.

  PULACAN FALLS

Pulacan Falls Labangan near Pagadian

While you are in Pagadian, make time to visit the neighboring town of Labangan, about 30 minutes away.  Don’t miss the impressive Pulacan Falls in Brgy.Upper, which is actually the source of water for the Labangan irrigation system.  You’ll be glad to know that the waterfalls is pretty accessible from the highway inside the confines of Tabak Base in Camp Major Cesar Sang-an( do bring a valid ID when visiting for the military check point).  It literally  took us a few steps from the main road to get to Pulacan Waterfalls.

Tabak Base Pagadian

When we visited Pulacan Falls in Labangan, we had to go through some military check points and leave one valid ID.  This is because the waterfall is inside the confines of Camp Major Cesar Sang-an situated on top of a hill.  Not much to do here, but there is a good view overlooking the vast agricultural land below.

Getting a Taste of Molave in Zamboanga del Sur

On the northeastern part of Zamboanga del Sur lies a place not much affected by typhoons. Being bounded by mountain ranges, Molave is rarely struck by tropical cyclones. Lying at the foot of a verdant hill and surrounded by the Salug Diut River, Molave is generally divided into the lowlands (flat, swampy and marshy) and highlands (hilly).

Molave derives its name from the strong, hard and resilient tree that was quite numerous in the area in the past.

The beginnings of Molave can be traced back to the early 1930s when it was just a small patch of settlement in a marshy jungle called Salug. The fertile land attracted settlers from all over the Philippines, with the earliest being the Subanons. Several Chinese businessmen settled in the region as well and prospered.

Rapid development in the area was made possible thanks to the continuous arrival of settlers from different areas. And by June 16, 1948, Molave was turned into a municipality through Republic Act No 286.

ZAMBOANGA CITY | 50 THINGS TO DO & TOURIST SPOTS TO VISIT 2023

Things To Do Tourist Spots In Zamboanga City

Every afternoon after our kid wakes from his nap, we’d quickly go out of our hotel, ride a jeep to pueblo , walk along the old downtown area of Zamboanga City, and be transported back in time. In our mind, this was probably how Manila looked and felt, back in the day. The view would then open up to the sea. We’d buy some snacks, sit beside the breakwater, and along with school kids out with their friends, and wait for the sun to say adios . Those are my memories of our trip to Zamboanga.

We spent four days in and around the city, exploring not only its downtown area, but a few of its outlying islands and islets as well. It is, surprisingly, very walkable, and more importantly, very safe. Besides our usual afternoon jaunt to Paseo Del Mar, we were able to do quite a lot of things and were able to visit more than a few sights in Zamboanga City. With its numerous tourist spots, a weekend trip is definitely not enough to see everything.

zamboanga del sur tourist spots

PUEBLO / DOWNTOWN ZAMBOANGA

This is the heart of Zamboanga City. The downtown area, dubbed in Chavacano —the local language in the city—as Pueblo . It is located right beside the sea, on the southern part of the peninsula. This is where it’s all happening and also the gateway to Zamboanga’s Pink Sand Beach in Sta. Cruz Island. Let’s start our steps from one of the most iconic places in Zamboanga City, Fort Pilar and move westward from there.

A National Cultural Treasure, Fort Pilar is a military stone fortress constructed by the Spaniards in the 1600s. It was used as defense against pirates and Moro raiders from Jolo, and its cornerstone marked the founding date of Zamboanga as a city. It was built with the help of Mexicans and Peruvians, leading to the development of the Zamboangenos creole language, Chavacano . Visitors are allowed to access its courtyard and climb its fortifications.

It has a permanent exhibit of the 18th century Griffin Shipwreck, rock collections from around the Philippines, weavings from Yakan, Subanun, and Sama tribes, the Lepa houseboat, and over 400 species of marine life from Zamboanga, Basilan, and Sulu.

ZSCMST Bird Sanctuary

If you don’t know it, you couldn’t tell that there’s a small lake located just beside Fort Pilar. Situated inside the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences & Technology (ZSCMST) compound, the lake is a sanctuary for migratory and non-migratory birds. It’s a welcome and unexpected sight after visiting the popular Fort Pilar tourist spot.

BPI Zamboanga Museum

Along one of downtown’s main avenues stand the old BPI Zamboanga building. It’s a normal functioning BPI branch, only it looks like a house, is made of wood, and is distinguished as BPI’s second branch in the Philippines. But more than that, it has a museum on its second floor. The building used to be the residence of a wealthy Chinese trader, Don Francisco Barrios before it became General John J. Pershing’s house when he was assigned to suppress insurrections in Mindanao.

Walk a few more steps and you’d pass by the stately Zamboanga City Hall. McDonald’s & Jollibee Zamboanga

Across the street from Rizal Park are two of the country’s most popular fast food chains. While, these aren’t usually tourist spots, the ones in Zamboanga City’s downtown are quite curious since they are housed on colonial-style structures. McDonald’s occupies a repurposed Victorian neo-classical building that used to house the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China in 1928. Jollibee, on the other hand, is housed in a faux bahay na bato structure reminiscent of those in Vigan City .

Plaza Pershing

Another famous park within the area is Plaza Pershing. It’s a pocket park with a neo-classical gazebo named after the American Governor that once lived at the second floor of BPI Zamboanga. The park actually hosts small trade fairs among other things. During one of my visits, the park was full of stalls selling cactuses and other ornamental plants. I even bought some as pasalubong for my mother-in-law.

R.T. Lim Boulevard / Cawa-Cawa Boulevard

From the Zamboanga Public Market near the city hall, ride a jeep to R.T. Lim Boulevard or Cawa-Cawa Boulevard. Zamboanga’s baywalk is a popular place for locals, especially during the afternoons and early evening. The seaside park is clean and very safe. It’s a good place to walk or jog as it stretches for about 600 meters. It’s also one of the best spots to watch the sunset while munching on street food. On the far end of the boulevard, tables and chairs are set for balut, penoy , and beef chicharon —the accompanying vinegar, which range from mild to very spicy, is a must try.

ADDRESS: Gov. Lim Avenue., Downtown GPS MAP: 6.908116, 122.064305 Entrance Fee: Free OPENING HOURS: 24 Hours, Daily

JMDN Seaview

A couple of meters from the end of R.T. Lim Boulevard is another sunset viewpoint, JMDN Seaview. This place, however, has no benches, or anything else for that matter. It’s just a vacant lot where people traveling on cars and motorcycles park to see the view of the setting sun.

Zamboanga Cathedral

About a kilometer away from R.T. Boulevard is Zamboanga City’s Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Concepcion. Its curving modernist façade somehow reminds me of Le Corbusier’s Notre-Dame du Haut church. It replaced the old cathedral located near Rizal Park which was bombed during the Second World War.

AROUND ZAMBOANGA CITY

Here are some of the tourist spots around Zamboanga City that aren’t located in downtown or even the Pasonanca Park. Some of these are just a few minutes from the city center, while others are quite far and might require a full day visit.

Rainbow Mosque

The most colorful mosque you’ll probably ever see is located at Barangay Sta. Maria, a jeepney ride away from Zamboanga’s downtown area. Formally called Masjid Al-Islamia , it has since been dubbed as the Rainbow Mosque due to its ultra-colorful façade. But it wasn’t always like this, its rainbow hues were painted on its white walls after the Marawi Siege as a call for peace and unity.

Yakan Village

Located about seven kilometers away from the city hall, off the west coast of Zamboanga City is a small colorful village populated by Yakans , a group of people who originated from Basilan during the seventies. And what colors their village are the textile weavings they do by hands. Traditionally, they weave semmek dresses for wearing, but now, they’ve included bags, table runners, blankets, and even shoes into their repertoire.

Taluksangay Mosque

On the east coast of Zamboanga, about half an hour drive from downtown, lies one of the more important mosques in the city. The Taluksangay Mosque was built in 1885 and is the oldest mosque in Western Mindanao. It is where Islam first spread in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

Merloquet Falls

On the border of Zamboanga City and Zamboanga Sibugay lies one of the grandest waterfalls in Zamboanga Peninsula. Merloquet Falls is a two-tiered waterfall, rising to a height of about fifteen meters with a width of ten to fifteen meters. It is quite far from downtown Zamboanga, but it’s an excellent destination if you have a free day to spare in the city.

SHOPPING IN ZAMBOANGA

Those who travel to shop won’t be disappointed with Zamboanga. The city has a good combination of modern malls and local and traditional shops. Be sure to get enough baggage allowance for your flights back.

Canelar Barter Trade

One of the best places to shop in Zamboanga City is at the Canelar Barter Trade. It’s a open-air dry market selling mostly Malaysian textiles, clothes, and food stuff. Be sure to bring home batik shirts, colorful scarves, unique instant noodles, egg udang noodles for making mee goreng at home, Malaysian white coffee, teh tahrik , and Apollo chocolates.

Plaza Pilar

Located right across Fort Pilar, Plaza Pilar is a small area surrounded by a colonnade selling souvenirs, local foodstuff, and religious items. Be sure to get a bunch of apa , a crispy wafer-like rolled treat, when you visit. It’s also a good place to have a photo of the Fort with a foreground of flying pigeons—as there are lots in the area.

Magay Zamboanga Public Market

Near the Zamboanga City Hall is the hustle and chaos of the Zamboanga Magay Public Market. If you like market places, this is the most massive this side of the city. It’s a good place to see and buy local wares, and the cheapest place for street food.

Pettit Barracks Night Market

As evening arrives, Rizal Street closes to vehicular traffic and stalls upon stalls of ukay ukay clothes start to line the road. This Zamboanga night market stretches for two blocks, with food stalls hawking local street food like mee goreng on the rear part, perfect for after-shopping snacks. It actually reminds me of Baguio’s Harrison Road Ukay Ukay .

Shopping Malls

Zamboanga is a bustling city and most people from the neighboring islands of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi do their shopping here. And like all big cities, there are numerous shopping malls in the area—KCC Mall, SM City Mindpro, Southway Mall, South Supermall, Gaisano Grand Mall, CityMall Tetuan, to name a few.

OPENING HOURS: Most open at 9:00AM and closes at 7:00PM to 9:00PM

ZAMBOANGA STA. CRUZ ISLAND TOUR

One of the most popular tourist spot in the city is the Zamboanga Pink Beach —one of only a handful in the world. And this is located in Sta. Cruz Island, which is just some minutes by boat away from downtown Zamboanga.

• Subic Pink Sand Beach • Komodo Island Pink Beach

Little Sta Cruz Island & Sandbar

The first place tourists visit when going to Zamboanga’s Sta. Cruz Island is the sandbar that extends from Little Sta. Cruz Island. This is a small islet before the main island. Tourists are not allowed on the island, but they can go down on the sandbar if the tide is low and the sandbar is above water. Swimming is prohibited though, as the area has riptides which can sweep swimmers away.

Sta. Cruz Island Mangrove Lagoon

Before heading to the beach, a side-tour to the mangrove forest of Sta. Cruz Island is a worthy experience. You transfer to a smaller paddle boat, and ride around the mangroves where you can enjoy the scenery, have a taste of the freshest seagrapes or lato , and experience handling stingless jellyfishes.

One of the highlights of a Sta. Cruz tour is their vinta ride—those colorful boats you only see on textbooks. After the lagoon tour, a small vinta awaits visitors—one which you can actually paddle and ride around on.

Zamboanga Pink Beach

And finally, the main event of a Sta. Cruz Island tour, Zamboanga’s Pink Beach. The beach is actually not as pink as Barbie pink, but it only has a hint of pinkness when viewed on a certain angle, especially on the foreshore area where the sand is wet. This is due to crushed red corals that mix with the sand. Swimming and snorkeling is a good activity here, just be aware of the strong current.

Seafood Picnic Lunch

Depending on the tour you availed, it may or may not have a seafood lunch bundled with it. We booked ours with iTravel Tourist Lane and it does have an excellent seafood lunch on a cottage by the beach. Shrimp, crabs, roasted fish and squid, chicken barbecue, and fruits—it was one of the best meals I’ve had in Zamboanga.

Badjao Cemetery

Before going back to mainland Zamboanga, we dropped by the Badjao Cemetery in Sta. Cruz Island. The burial ground was used by the Badjao and Sama Bangingi tribes even before Sta. Cruz Island became famous as a tourist spot. The graves are small and are usually adorned with gravestones made of wood and small wooden boats—reflecting the Badjao’s seafaring way of life.

Scuba Diving at Sta. Cruz Island

Another activity that can be done in Sta. Cruz Island is scuba diving. The whole Sta. Cruz Island is actually surrounded by a reef wall, but diving isn’t allowed there due to very strong rip tides. The only approved diving site is located near the Little Sta. Cruz Island where there’s also a reef wall. As of the moment, there’s no dive operator or shop accredited by the LGU since the pandemic happened. I will update this once diving resumes in Sta. Cruz Island.

ONCE ISLAS ZAMBOANGA

One of the newest tourist spots in Zamboanga can be found in Barangay Panubigan, the Once Islas Island Hopping Tour . It is located about an hour away from downtown, but the travel time is very much worth it. I found the beaches here to be even better than at Sta. Cruz Island. While there are eleven islands in the vicinity, only three islands are open to tourist.

Bisaya Bisaya Island

The most adventure-filled island on the tour is Bisaya-Bisaya Island. It has a trail that circles around the half the island with beautiful rock formations, a natural tidal pool off one of its islets which you can reach by walking on a sandbar during low tide, and a pretty fine beach to boot too.

Sirommon Island

The island best for snorkeling is Sirumon Island. And there’s actually a raft that can take you to the best snorkeling spot. But if the tide’s too low, snorkeling a few meters from the shore is not that bad too. Plus, it has a sandbar too. The beach is also super fine.

Baung Baung Island

The final island on the list is Baung Baung Island. I like this island best for its waters, absolutely no current—a real pleasure to swim on. It also has a view deck that can be hiked up through 248 steps.

ZAMBOANGA FOOD TRIP

The food scene in Zamboanga City is really good. Point in fact, I gained weight after visiting the city. For a dedicated article for Zamboanga’s food scene. Check these out.

• Zamboanga Food Trip

• Mee Goreng Zamboanga

Moro Cuisine

Zamboanga’s culinary landscape is very different from most of the Philippines. Some of the best places to try these are at Andi’s Special Satti, Bay Tal Mal Restaurant, and Dennis Coffee Garden.

The city is famous for its curacha or spanner crab and there are several restaurants you can try to get the best out of it. A few of the famous ones are Alavar Seafood Restaurant (their Alavar sauce is a must) and Vista Del Mar Restaurant.

Malaysian Food

Being so close to Malaysia, their food has seeped in to the tables of Zamboangeños . We hunted for the best mee goreng and other Malay dishes this side of the Philippines and found them at Ole Ole Restaurant, Tinis Restaurant, and on makeshift stalls selling mee goreng along the streets.

Street Food

Zamboanga street food is also very unique. Be sure to try their local fishballs, coconut sugar-laden taho , crispy salvaro and apa , okoy, pastil , and experience having balut, beef chicharon , and mee goreng along the breakwater of R.T. Lim Boulevard.

Everything In Between

And if you want something less adventurous, Zamboanga City also has the usual fast food chains, plus restaurants serving traditional Filipino and Western fares—if you want Chinese, they have those too. We tried some of the best at Bar Code, Country Chicken Restaurant, and Hacienda De Palmeras Restaurant.

ZAMBOANGA HERMOSA FESTIVAL

The best time to visit Zamboanga City is during the month of October when they celebrate the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival . Here are some of the festival highlights.

Regatta De Zamboanga

This is the ultimate vinta boat race in Zamboanga City. Multitudes of vintas race across the waters fronting R.T. Lim Boulevard using only hand power or paddling.

The ultimate in shopping in Zamboanga City. ZAMPEX or the Zamboanga Peninsula Expo features the best of what the region offers—textiles, clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, furniture, and most importantly food products! This is usually held at a convention center, and the last one I attended was held at the Palacio del Sur , the event hall of Marcian Garden Hotel .

Asao Lechon Festival

Part of the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival is the Asao Lechon Festival where lechoneros from all over Zamboanga City compete for the best lechon in the city, parading them, and letting everyone have a taste—for free! By the way, Asao is not a place but rather a chavacano term for grilled or roasted food.

Mascota De Zamboanga

The most beautiful terno gowns—inspired by opulent ladies during the Spanish era in Zamboanga City—competes for the annual Mascota De Zamboanga. Local artists sometimes take a year to create these masterpieces.

Zamboanga Hermosa Street Dance

The Zamboanga Hermosa Festival climaxes in a street dancing competition by various barangays in the city. The dancing spreads through the streets of the city before culminating at the Paseo Del Mar for their final performance.

BAWBAWON ISLAND: The Hidden Gem of Misamis Occidental

 alt=

They initially told us that the trip to Bawbawon Island was canceled.

The Coast Guard did not allow any boat trips due to strong waves, and we were just sad. So on the 3rd day of our Laag-Laag to MisOcc tour, we already accepted that we won’t be able to visit Bawbawon, a hidden paradise in the municipality of Plaridel.

But after exploring the Gakit in Lopez Jaena in the morning, they informed us that the Coast guard had finally made the go signal. You don’t have any idea of our thrill and excitement when we received the news. We’re going to Bawbawon!

We traveled for about 30 minutes before we reached the port in Plaridel. Of course, we experienced once again the warm Misamisnon welcome from the LGU. We were advised to group into 8 and assigned a boat to us.

Bawbawon is literally and figuratively a hidden gem. You have to go through a dense mangrove forest to reach it, and it’s clear that only a few people know about this secluded beach haven. Its name was derived from the same local word which means shallow. With mangroves and rich marine life, the water level tends to be too shallow for motorboats during low tide.

Bawbawon Island

On our way to the island, I was on the same boat with my fellow content creators. We braved through the rough but manageable waves at the beginning, but once we arrived at the mangrove area, the water was calmer.

I finally understood why Bawbawon is such a special place once we arrived on the island. It’s not just a usual beach getaway, it’s surrounded by coral reefs, mangroves, and rich marine biodiversity.

The Bawbawon Island Experience

Upon reaching the shores, we were welcomed by a pristine beach. At that time, I told myself how grateful I am to be back to traveling again and exploring beaches such as this. I would love to walk on the shore first but the next announcement was even more appealing, “lunch is served.” Haha

Imagine we’ve already had our breakfast at our hotel, then followed by another heavy and satisfying breakfast in Oroquieta City, then another early lunch in Lopez Jaena. After all of that, we were about to have our “real” lunch? Haha Beat that.

MisOcc officials and LGUs spoiled us with too much delicious seafood, local delicacies, and Lechon! I can still have enough time to explore the beach after lunch, so I went there and was again amazed by a long table of sumptuous food, boodle fight style!

Takaw! Haha

Look at the creative combination of pancit and rice! It’s definitely a carbo overload and we loved it. We also enjoyed the fresh seafood and vegetables. To say that I was full was an understatement. MisOcc definitely gave us an unforgettable experience – the food and hospitality are over the top!

It was time for me to explore the island. I just walked along the shores and took some photos. After all we’ve gone through during the pandemic, it’s happy to be back traveling and kicking it off in Misamis Occidental.

Bawbawon Island

Siempre kailangan ang selfie. Haha

It was also the perfect time to just enjoy the moment. Seeing my fellow participants taking pictures, and enjoying the vibe of the beach gives me so much joy and gratitude. I’m thankful that tourism is finally back with a blast!

The senti and introvert moments were only just for a few minutes, because I had an awesome time and conversations with the LGU, especially with Mayor Gadwin Handumon and the rest of the participants.

Bawbawon Island

I would love to stay longer. I wanted more of the island but sadly we had to go back. It was already low tide and our boats won’t be able to pass through the shallow mangrove area, and we would be stuck on the island. Well, I was thinking that would be an awesome experience. Haha But we have a schedule to follow and we still have many destinations to explore in the province.

When I wrote about the 20 tourist spots that we explored in Misamis Occidental, I put Bawbawon island on the number one spot. Yes, and I mean it. Read the article here: 20 Best Tourist Spots in Misamis Occidental (Laag-Laag sa MisOcc)

Bawbawon Island should be on everyone’s bucket list when visiting Misamis Occidental. It’s not just about the pristine beach. It’s about the overall experience of a peaceful commune with nature.

How to go to Plaridel (Bawbawon Island)

From Manila , you can either take a flight going to Ozamiz or Dipolog. From Ozamiz there are buses that would take you to Oroquieta all the way to Plaridel. Once you’re in Plaridel, there is enough local transport that would take you to the port. It is highly advised that you get in touch with the Municipal Tourism Office to get assistance.

Facebook Page: Plaridel Tourism Office Address: Ipil-Dipology Highway, Plaridel, 7209 Phone: 0915 851 6204

Plaridel Seaport Plaridel, Misamis Occidental Phone: 0946 503 8232

There are also several ways on how to go to Bawbawon if you’re from Mindanao or Visayas.

From Davao, it will take 8 hours by car or public transport. If you’re from Cagayan De Oro, it’s only 3 hours by car and ferry. From Dumaguete, it’s about 4 hours of travel by ferry and car.

Our trip to Bawbawon Island is part of the Laag-Laag sa MisOcc2022 tour by the Provincial Tourism Office in cooperation with all the LGUs, DOT Region 10, and of course, the Philippines Tourism Promotions Board.

The Kapampangan Traveller

Stories, tips, techniques and bit of travel hacks in exploring the philippines, one province at a time.

zamboanga del sur tourist spots

ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY: travel guide

Many Filipinos still are not aware of the province of Zamboanga Sibugay. Relatively, the province was officially carved out from Zamboanga del Sur just last 2001, the 79th of the 81 provinces of the Philippines . Moreso, its tourist destinations dotting the new province proves promising. From waterfalls to pristine beaches, Zamboanga Sibugay has many destinations to offer to all categories of tourists.

Last December 2016, I was able to visit the Zamboanga Peninsula, a landmass jutting out from Mindanao main island, forming the landmass that is now Zamboanga City to Misamis Occidental. In between are Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga del Norte. Favored by a more rainy climate, Zamboanga Sibugay is also a best place to cultivate rubber trees. It also has a mountainous core and vast coastline that features many beach resorts and beautiful islands. We just passed by this province on our way to Pagadian and Tangub City, hence, my indelible interest to explore Zamboanga Sibugay lingers until I was able to book a flight with Philippine Airlines from Manila to Dipolog after a couple of years. I was able to solo travel last May 2018 and here are the destinations I was able to visit.

MALANGAS Island Hopping

Malangas is one of the coastal municipalities of the province located at its southwestern flank. Facing the smaller Dumangquilas Bay, the town is endowed with a smaller group of islands featuring white-sand beaches. Malangas offers an island-hopping activity that you can enjoy for a day. Luckily I knew a local, Ms. Jonna Balagon , a dedicated educator, and she was able to arrange a boat day tour in her beloved Malangas.

Malangas map island hopping kapampangan traveller.JPG

Arriving at night from Ipil, the capital of the province, I stayed in La Dicha Lodge , where I also had my late dinner in their in-house cafeteria. My room in La Dicha lodge offers basic amenities that are ok for me. I had a huge mattress, a clean bathroom and since it was raining that night, I do not need to turn on the AC unit. I slept peacefully with the calming sound of rain.

Assigned room with double bed

I checked out early and transferred to Ms. Joanna’s home where she had me finish a hearty breakfast. I met her dear mom, Ms. Julie Balagon, and her sister too. They joined us in the island hopping. We left their homebound to the where our assigned boat is docked. Chartered a motorcycle, we arrived on a stony beach and a white outrigger boat is waiting for us there. Momentarily, the engine roared alive and we are on our way. In less than an hour, we will reach our first destination.

We visited Muyong Island – privately owned, however, they allowed tourists to visit. We are welcomed by a long stretch of cream-colored sandy beach. Dry white corals also litter the beach. There are huts that we can use. That day, we are the sole visitors on the island.

Malangas Island Hopping Travel Guide Muyong Nipa Nipa Kigay Sandbar (8)

We moved to Nipa Nipa Island before noontime. This island features a more fine and whiter beach. I liked it better here. We arrived there with a family already occupying the other side of the beach. They are already enjoying their meals together while sheltered under the trees. I immediately frolicked around and dipped on its cool and clear waters. Rain clouds start to form afar and we hurried to the next destination.

Mother duo - Mommy Julie and Mam Jonna

In less than 20 minutes we arrived in Kigay Sandbar , however, it was high tide. The stilted structures seem to float above the inundated sandbar. We jumped out of the boat and swam to reach the sandbar. It was roughly waist-deep however, I can feel the finer sand on my submerged feet. We explored the floating structure and took pictures from there. Its roof deck is flooded with rainwater. I tried my snorkel equipment here and have seen many camouflaged fishes, crustaceans, and starfishes.  Warned by the looming rain, we hurried back to the mainland.

Malangas Island Hopping Travel Guide Muyong Nipa Nipa Kigay Sandbar (17)

After preparing my departure, I sadly bade goodbye to Joanna’s family. Before I finally leave the town, She escorted me in their Municipal Hall and was able to meet Hon. Tata Baquiat – their supportive mayor. It was another unforgettable experience and an honor to exchange thoughts and ideas with Mayor Tata. Finally, I was on a chartered motorcycle and sped off to the Diplahan terminal. I am thankful to Ms. Jonna as she is the one who arranged my tour in their lovely place. I am wishing to be back and experience the laid back vibes there.

Travel Guide to Malangas.

Ports of Entry: Pagadian, Zamboanga City or Dipolog. From these airports, charter tricycles to their central terminals and take Ipil bound bus. From Pagadian, alight at Diplahan junction. From Zamboanga and Dipolog, take Pagadian bound vehicles and alight in Diplahan junction. From Diplahan, you can charter a motorcycle or tricycle to Malangas.

TAGBILAT FALLS.

From Diplahan, I took the two-hour bus ride back to Ipil. Arriving at their central terminal, I walked to my next accommodation, Casa Mea Hotel . It is located near the Ipil Rotunda Obelisk. After checking in, I rested a bit, took a bath, and prepared myself to explore the night scene in Ipil. I chose an AC Double Room with private T&B. With the recommendation from Mr. UJ Almocera , one of the established bloggers in the region, I found myself in front of Mi Jardin – a buffet restaurant. After scanning the dishes, I confirmed my seat and enjoyed my heavy dinner, then continued to explore the town on foot. I noticed a lot of outdoor balut kiosks, where vendors would set up modest tables and chairs at nightfall. This is not typical of where I reside.

Tagbilat Falls Titay Zamboanga Sibugay Travel Guide Kapampangan Traveller (4)

The following day, I met my driver bound for Titay. After driving for about an hour, we arrived at the Titay Public Market and changed the motorcycle since we will be passing winding roads to Tagbilat Falls. Luckily, he knew as well the trail and he was able to guide me to the catchbasin of the falls. The trek took me less than half an hour, and the momentarily, the view of the curtain waterfall emerged in between thick bamboo clusters. The Tagbilat Falls or Malagandis Falls features a wider cascade that is actually larger than its height. The roaring side and burst of wind emanating from the basin were therapeutic for me. I immediately ran to its catchbasin and balanced over exposed rocks to get a better vantage point of the waterfalls. I chose not to bathe into and spent some time exchanging stories with my tour guide over a makeshift bench placed under the shade of swaying tall bamboos.

BULUAN ISLAND

This island is one of the poster images of Zamboanga Sibugay’s tourism aspect. Featuring a teeming marine ecosystem coupled with hilly island core and creamy white sand beach, this island is a destination for both locals and tourists. The jump-off point is located in Barangay Buluan, about 15-20 minutes’ drive from Ipil proper. Initially, I was able to visit the island with the Ipil Municipal Hall staff. I got invited since one of them will be celebrating his birthday on the beautiful island. Arriving at the port, we approached our assigned boat via a long stilted footpath. The waters below appeared to be murky due to its muddy soil. On my second visit, we got on our assigned boat on a low tide, and we need to wade the shallow waters and muddy bed that swallows our feet ankle-deep, it is best this time to remove any footwear. The boat ride would last from 15-20 minutes depending on sea conditions. We arrived on a busy weekend and the island is already teeming with visitors. After securing our rented hut, I immediately went around the public area. One of the staff has shared a bit of the grim history of the island. He showed me a mound topped with stones believed to be a burial site of the rebels who occupied the island decades ago.

On its western side, you can try to snorkel and see the coral reefs on its shallow parts. I have tried to free dive here however the current proves daunting. I joined the team with their hearty lunch. I am so thankful to them inviting me and I enjoyed Buluan Island for free.

ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY CAPITOL COMPLEX

This is one of the elegant and stunning capitol buildings I have visited. The capitol complex is located on a hilly portion of the provincial capital where you can enjoy the panoramic view of the town. Its unique architectural features differ from the commonly greek inspired facades. The facade features three colors – yellow, blue, and maroon. The roof has a dominant conical structure in the middle, and the visible columns feature an ethnic style support structure jutting out that speaks of the province’s cultural background.

View deck from Capitol Complex

When I entered the building, I was awed by its spacious and high ceilinged open-air hall with a built stage. My favorite part of the capitol complex is the balcony at the other building where you can view downtown. As you explore more of the capitol building, its architectural features would certainly marvel the visitors.I am thankful to Sir Tino Ferio for bringing me here.

Travel Guide to Zamboanga Sibugay Capitol Complex:

Ports of Entry: Pagadian, Zamboanga and Dipolog, take Ipil bound bus. Once at Ipil, you can charter a tricycle to bring you to the capitol complex.

IPIL ROTUNDA OBELISK

Ipil is a crossroads to Zamboanga, Dipolog, and Pagadian. Exploring the Zamboanga Peninsula would definitely lead you to this recognizable obelisk. It is erected on a traffic roundabout, surrounded by commercial establishments, and was inaugurated last 2015. The obelisk is embellished with baybayin script characters that spell the name of the province.

Despite being a new province, the existing natural wonders of Zamboanga Sibugay are waiting for more visitors to see and experience. From the major thoroughfares of Ipil, I can see mountains that could be future mountain climbing destinations, many view decks and more waterfalls and beaches to open. The province has a promising future in terms of tourism since there are many islands that can be explored and developed. I am thankful for the locals who assisted and helped me in visiting their beloved province, and that yearning to return still linger until this day.

Ang ganda ng mga falls! Would you recommend Zamboanga Sibugay as one of the safest provinces for solo travelers? My former officemate lived there when she was a kid, but haven’t visited again (or di ko lang alam haha) since she went to Manila for college. I got the idea of going there but I can’t find anyone who would join me. Kaines. 😦

Ako sasagot hahaha medyo! punta kana here. Unahin mo na Zamboanga del Norte 😀

Nako. Takot pa ko. Pero kapag may dahilan na tayo para tumapang G! Sabihan kita!

Yes, it is safe too there. I traveled solo here and met my friend in Malangas

Noted! It’s now on my list of where to go next! Thank you!

I live within Zamboanga Peninsula and I can attest talaga on its beauty. I have visited some of its tourist destinations though and I think mas madaming hidden paradise yung Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Sur compared dito samin sa Norte.

I agree. There is so much to explore and discover in your region, blessed with long coastline and scenic mountain ranges.

Tagbilat/Malagandis Falls is such a beautiful creation!! Ang dami din palang magagandang island sa Zamboanga specially Muyong Island. I want to see the long stretch of cream-colored sandy beach in person! 🙂

I can imagine you doing your poses there. You would enjoy the islands of Malangas since there is lesser crowd.

Ang ganda nung lodge na natuluyan mo. Parang ang peaceful at malinis. Hehe tapos super ganda at laki ng falls! Syempre gusto ko rin yan mapuntahan as well as the beaches!!!

Gusto ko maligo nun, kaso ako lang bisita dun, natatakot ako baka may isnek lurking ehe

I, myself is not familiar of the place. But seeing how there’s also a lot of islands to explore here made me interested. I also will love to visit their capitol! Such a colorful structure

I forgot the exact story behind the architectural design of the capitol building, all I can recall is me staring as if stunned onto its facade

The lodge you stayed in is very homey. It reminds me of our house sa Leyte. Falling asleep from the fresh air and cool breeze and waking up at a beautiful sunrise and the crow of roosters in the morning. Aaaaaa 💗 The destinations are all beautiful as well ✨

Healthy for the soul and lungs

I’ve bookmarked this post for future reference. There’s so much to see in Zamboanga Sibugay!! I love how beautiful Buluan island is. Never been there but wow your pictures are just amazing!!

Want to be back too in that province

Ang ganda nung Tagbilat/Malagandis Falls at nice din yung lodge na tinuluyan mo. Yung sana lang magkachance na makapunta kami dyan Sa Zamboanga Sibugay. 🙂

Soon we can. But not in the near future. Post COVID19 could be more than a year worth of waiting

I’m excited to visit this place. hopefully mag end na ang pandemic para tuloy na tuloy na ang nka plan na trip

Would agree. Hopefully the vaccine would be commercially available so we can return to our usual routines – travel

I heard so many good things about Zamboanga Sibugay, one of them is Buluan Island. A friend described it as “beautiful, pristine & relaxing” and I couldn’t agree more! Tagbilat Falls looks majestic too though the name’s kind of cheeky! I’m hoping to tick this off my list as soon as it’s okay to travel already! 😁

Hoping you can tick it off on your travel list…

It’s refreshing to see these pictures. Makes me wonder when I’ll get to visit the beach, falls and go on all these adventures like you do. Will totally make time for them when everything’s all cleared up and safe.

I really like the ambiance when it rains. Anyways, super dami napuntahan sa Zamboanga Sibugay. One which caught my attention was the Tagbilat Falls, it feels like I can hear the streaming down of the running water. ❤ And napansin ko sa kapitolyo nila kakaiba yung architectural design. Astig.

Nice place to visit! Thanks for this guide, an easy cheat sheet to enjoy the place 🙂

I’ve been hearing Zamboangga Sibugay from pageantry but I am not aware about what the province has to offer. Then upon reading your post, it made me aware there’s plenty of spots to explore. I also love the fact that this is not so overpopulated by tourists.

so true! i am not really aware. ang dami kong hindi alam na natututunan sa blog mo. kaya i always look forward on your blogs. napakaganda! my fave one is yung bahay sa gitna ng dagat!

I haven’t read much stuff about Zamboanga. I love how you captured Tagbilat Falls. Reading travel blogs makes me want to travel soon!

While reading your story, I am also looking these places in my Google Map and start saving them for future travel. I can’t wait for that time to realize!

Ang ganda ng Magadanlis Falls. First time ko makita ng ganyang ka ganda falls ito sa Pinas. I would love to see it personally soon.

Ang ganda ng falls and white sand beach! Classic din yung design ng lodge, Pilipinong Pilipino eh.

With this post, napatunayan kong wala akong kaalam alam sa Pilipinas. I didn’t know na may iba-iba palang Zamboanga and madami din palang magagandang lugar dun. Ang ganda ng Malagandis Falls.

Ako alam ko ang Zamboanga Sibugay dahil sa Bb. Pilipinas, lagi ko inaabangan eh hehe. Ang ganda ng falls sobrang majestic!

I’ve been to Zamboanga to visit the Pink Beach last year. I’ve also heard of Once Islas but I didn’t have the chance to visit it due to time constraints. It’s my first time to read/hear about Zamboanga Sibugay. The beach seems peaceful and not commercialized just like Pink Beach. I guess beaches in Zamboanga have that common characteristic? Love the photos of the waterfalls btw.

I also have a thing for small, tiny lodges that you’d feel more at home. The place you stayed is absolutely worthy to check out.

I have friends from Zamboanga but they never mention anything about those places you mentioned on your blog. I guess they are not well-traveled people. I really appreciate places like this. I have been to Boracay but it looks so commercialized now. I want something just like this, simple, unique and not too popular for tourist…

Thanks for this trivia about Zamboanga Sibugay: 79th of the 81 provinces of the Philippines. I also love the facade of the lodge you stayed in. You had a VIP visit, too meeting the mayor. And that’s a lot of great architecture in there in Ipil, especially the yellow building.

Grabe naman yung Tagbilat Falls! Sobrang scenic. We used to have waterfalls at Alfonso, Cavite but nasira siya because of the people and now more and more rivers die because of Camella. 😦
